New Forest Tour Bus | 3 Open Top Routes [2024]

Touring the New Forest by open top bus is a lovely thing to do, even for locals like us who live on the edge of the National Park. This guide to the New Forest tour bus will tell you all you need to know about taking the three routes around the area .

An open top bus tour of the New Forest allows you to see the sights more closely while enjoying the sunshine. This is one of the warmest and driest parts of the UK, so you might even be pleasantly surprised by the weather. (Though we always pack a mac. Just in case.)

Highlights of the New Forest National Park are all included on the trio of routes offered by local operator morebus (who also run the Purbeck Breezer routes that head west from Bournemouth).

The New Forest lies to the east of Bournemouth and Dorset, and is located in Hampshire. To find out how to explore this National Park by local bus, read on to find out the New Forest bus timetable for each of the three routes. Plus everything else you need to know before you travel!

Let’s hop on board.

Why travel on the New Forest Tour bus?

The open top bus around the New Forest can take you to towns and villages like Ashurst, Barton-on-Sea, Burley, Milford-on-Sea, Brockenhurst, Fordingbridge, Beaulieu and Ringwood.

Routes depart from Lyndhurst, Brockenhurst and Totton, and you can board the bus at any of the stops en-route. Tourist attractions like the New Forest Wildlife Park and accommodation such as Sandy Balls, Hoburne and Shorefields Holiday Parks can also be accessed via these buses. The Green route also calls at the Balmer Lawn hotel.

The buses even call at popular places to east and drink along the way, including the tearoom at Holmsley, the Needles Eye cafe, the Rising Sun pub and the Hobler Inn. You can even get to New Milton train station via the Blue Route, which offers direct services to London Waterloo. The Red Route also takes in Ashurst station.

Why take to the wheel when someone else can do the driving and navigating? If you’re visiting the area between late June and mid September, then why not take an enjoyable, scenic New Forest sightseeing bus to get around the area?

New Forest tour tickets

The price you’ll pay to travel on the New Forest Tour bus depends on your age, how large your party is and how often you want to travel. Concessionary fares are also available for those who qualify.

The minimum ticket validity is one day, and the maximum a season ticket that applies throughout the operating dates. Season and 7 day fares only apply to New Forest residents. Visitors can buy tickets valid for 1, 2 or 5 days.

1 day tickets

A ticket valid for one day costs between £7.50 for a resident child and £18 for a non-concessionary, non-resident adult. A group ticket for up to 5 is also available, and will work out cheaper if there are enough of you travelling together.

2, 5, 7 day and season tickets

2, 5 and 7 days tickets can save you money – if you travel on the bus enough to recoup the cost. Don’t forget that 7 day and season passes are exclusively available to New Forest residents.

At £24, a 2-day standard adult ticket is just £6 more than a one day ticket. So it may well be worthwhile. The longer the ticket duration the bigger the discount, but it’s only worth it when you’ll actually use it!

To give you an idea, a 5 day standard adult ticket costs £36 for non-residents. While resident fares are cheaper, verification is required. You’ll thus need to demonstrate you really do live in the New Forest by showing some proof of your address.

morebus ways to pay

You can pay for morebus tickets in various ways. You can usea contactless credit or debit card, cash, or Android or Apple Pay on the bus. It’s also possible to purchase in advance via the website. To do this, you can create an account, then receive a digital ticket to show on your smartphone.

The New Forest Tour – helping you and helping our environment

The New Forest Tour is a key part of our aim to encourage more people to leave their cars at home. Over 40,000 people explored the New Forest National Park on the New Forest Tour bus instead of by car last summer.

The three scenic routes saved an estimated 220,212 private car miles last year, even on a reduced operating schedule. The Tour also provides a boost to local businesses. Last year, it contributed an estimated £660,000 to the New Forest economy while stopping at local villages and attractions.

The Tour stops at local cycle hire centres within the Forest. With each Tour able to carry up to four bikes, it gives access to the area’s quiet country lanes and 100 miles of waymarked cycle tracks .

The Tour is operated by morebus in partnership with the New Forest National Park Authority and is sponsored by local businesses.

New Forest Tour Bus

Care-free and car-free! Leave the car behind and enjoy grandstand views of the New Forest National Park from the top deck of the open-top New Forest Tour bus from 29th June – 15th September.

Sit back and enjoy a spectacular, panoramic perspective whilst listening to an audio commentary telling the story of the history and heritage of the landscape, its people and culture, and some fascinating facts about its flora and fauna. Your ticket gives access to discount at Beaulieu National Motor Museum, Exbury Gardens, the New Forest Wildlife Park, and local businesses participating in the Go New Forest card scheme.

There are three routes – Blue, Green, Red – which cover different parts of beautiful countryside and coast. Interchange points: Blue/Green at Brockenhurst and Lymington, Blue/Red at Burley, Green/Red at Lyndhurst. The Blue route takes in the coast and stops at Hurst Road and Sea Road in Milford on Sea. One ticket allows you to travel everywhere.

If you plan your day, you can experience all three routes in one day, hopping on and off along the way. Or, if you prefer, you can remain on the same route without changing. You choose! The routes are circular which means if you decide to get off the Tour to explore on foot, you simply return to the same bus stop to pick up the next bus. A Tour driver will pick up at any bus stop if you make your presence known.

Tickets can be purchased when you board on the day from the driver, or in advance online at thenewforesttour.info, or from campsites and holiday parks, e.g. Shorefield and Hoburne Bashley which are both close to Milford on Sea. Multi-day tickets are great value and you can enjoy each route in full on separate days, at a more leisurely pace. Multi-day tickets are valid for the entire season (previously limited to 5 or 14-day timeframe) to give maximum flexibility.

If travelling from Southampton, the ferry is free if you buy a combination ticket for the ferry and Tour bus. Connecting bus services are also free if you buy a Tour ticket from the service bus driver. Pick up a Tour leaflet from The Village News by Milford village green. The shop is also a New Forest National Park official local information point. Alternatively, the Tour timetable is available online and is printed and attached to bus stops. Remember to bring something to protect you from the sun and an extra layer as it can be breezy as well as exhilarating on the top deck! Bikes and well-behaved dogs are welcome.

New forest tour red route 6 july to 8 september 2019 archive.

New Forest Tour Bus at Sandy Balls Holiday Centre

We went on the new New Forest Tour Red Route last year. What great news. You can now discover even more about this beautiful National Park from another hop on, hop off open topped bus route.

It ran every hour, daily from various stops and covers Burley, Ringwood, Fordingbridge, Godshill, Brook, Bartley, Ashurst, Lyndhurst, Holmsley on a circular route. We had a lovely time discovering lots of beautiful scenery, and of course seeing all the New Forest animals too.

We decided to start our sightseeing bus trip on the New Forest Tour Red Route at Sandy Balls Holiday Centre at Godshill. Find out more about Sandy Balls Lodges or about Sandy Balls camping, tenting or cycle hire You can stop off here for a swim, a bite to eat or a bit of pampering.

We were soon setting off onto the open forest after passing over the cattle grid and saw our first views from the open topped bus. Two huge valleys spread out from either side of the bus. The first New Forest pub, the Fighting Cocks, was on our left.

New Forest Fighting Cocks Pub at Godshill from tour bus

There is a mule (half donkey half pony) you can sometimes see near the pub. It's a lovely animal and is quite strange to look at! The audio guide told us all about the animals we would see and explained Commoners Rights and who actually owns the animals you'll see. This New Forest Tour Red Route does pass plenty of pubs. Don't forget you really can hop on and hop off , so if you see one you fancy just get off - another bus will be along in an hour - plenty of time for a drink! Then we headed towards the village of Brook through forest which literally met in a canopy over the top of the bus. Brook often has pigs, sheep and donkeys wandering about. Sadly, a couple of years ago a Jenny (donkey) and her little foal were killed on this stretch of the road, so care at all times please if you are in your own car etc. We passed beautiful thatched cottages and then saw the Green Dragon pub on our right. This is a good pub for a meal or just a drink.

New Forest Green Dragon Pub at Brooke

We then came off the New Forest to travel towards the picturesque village of Bartley. Here you'll see a lovely little green tin church which was built around 1900. The villagers at that time had a very long walk to get to their nearest church and so this little tin one was built for them - maybe as a temporary solution.

Again we zipped over a cattle grid - whenever you hear the sound you know that you will be entering the New Forest areas where the animals have right to roam . You should see lots of ponies, cows and sometimes donkeys, pigs and even sheep!

New Forest ponies grazing enroute

Woodlands and Ashurst was the next area we covered. There is a main line station at Ashurst , Ashurst Campsite which is run by the Forestry Commission and another pub! The road then takes us eventually into Lyndhurst, which has been the "Capital" of the New Forest since 1079 when William the Conqueror used the area as a royal hunting ground. The New Forest Centre is based here and it is well worth taking an hour or so to explore the Museum and Shop, the New Forest Gallery and even the Reference Library! You can get all the leaflets you could ever want here and lots of helpful advice too.

New Forest Visitor Centre Lyndhurst

Lyndhurst has lovely little shops and tea rooms. St Micheal and All Angels Church is where Alice Liddell - the inspiration for Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll - is buried. More importantly for New Forest Commoners it is where The Verderers Court is based. They oversee the animal stock and enforce often ancient laws, to protect both the heritage, animals and habitat of the New Forest.

We headed out of Lyndhurst towards Burley and passed Swan Green where thatched cottages looked over a green on which the original New Forest pony sales were held. The New Forest Reptile Centre is on the right. I'd suggest you take a day out to visit here under your own transport. You'll see the rare sand lizard, smooth snake and poisonous adder here all basking in the sun - if it is a warm day. You can also get here on the New Forest cycle network or walk along the Reptile Trail

New Forest Station House Tearoom

We were now going to head towards the village of Burley. First of all we passed the Old Station House Tea Room which is a good place to stop for lunch or a cream tea. It used to be the Station House for the railway line (now defunct) but has lots of railway memorabilia inside and well worth a visit.

We explored open heathland which was just turning a lovely purple. At times the heather changes colour everyday when you are out in it.

My favourite is the rich purple but the browns are also amazing to see when the light is just right.

Burley is fascinating as its history includes an Iron Age Hill Fort, tales of smuggling and witchcraft too. Many of the village shops have titles which are witch related. There are many New Forest Tea Rooms to choose from here and again worth a stop off.

New Forest open heathland from top of bu

From Burley we headed out towards the New Forest market town of Ringwood. A market is held here every Wednesday and its charter dates back to 1226 . There is a very reasonable plant stall in this market, if you fancy a visit. You can buy New Forest local food and produce - delicious! If you enjoy shopping there is Waitrose, Hobbs and Jaeger too - window shopping is free!

New Forest Tour Bus leaving Lyndhurst

We were then off towards Fordingbridge. We passed the Rockford Lakes, a wildlife area on our right. This area has a WW2 history. Ibsley Airfield was once a very active part of WW2 Allied operations. The Control Tower can still be glimpsed, although it is in a sorry state, awaiting renovation. As we travelled beside the River Avon, which is very popular for fishing I was amazed to learn that 30 species of fish can be found, including salmon.

The New Forest Water Park was on our left as we headed into Fordingbridge and glimpsed the 7 arches of the river bridge which gave the town its name. The bus doesn't go into the town itself but hop off and visit a pub for lunch or the Fordingbridge Museum or a wonderful shop called Timothy's which has beautiful, reasonably priced gifts for the home and lots more. I always go here for unusual Christmas gifts. Our trip was nearly over as we headed up the hill towards Godshill again

Here's why I can really recommend the New Forest Tour

  • Excellent value for money - you can pay for 1 day, 2 days or 5 days and see the whole of the New Forest by combining both Green and Red tours.
  • Petrol and parking to cover these distances would cost you more than the fare on the New Forest Tour
  • Flexibility - hop on, hop off and take your bike too
  • Stop and go for a walk - there are lots of easy, signposted routes all along the sightseeing bus routes for you to choose
  • It is fun to travel on an open topped bus - we even enjoyed it when we got a bit wet one year! - you can see so much more
  • We had a friendly, helpful driver which made the trip even better
