Misleading job search

Nomad has a horrible job search engine. Everytime i search for a role it gives me the wrong work role. Their search engine for specific role is misleading. If youre looking for an xray technologist job. It will give you a list of jobs with the title General xray tech but when you click on the job its Nuclear tech work. Its a hassle cause it baits you with General radiology title but then its not general radiology its radiation therapy or something else or some otehr subspecialty. Please put the specialty first.

Nomad Health has made my experience so…

Nomad Health has made my experience so much easier. As a first time traveling nurse, they made sure that they address all my concerns and questions promptly. Their staff are very professional and highly organized, they know their business very well. You are highly recommended. Thank you and more power.

Nomads Demi……. Best of the Best!!

Demi, my onboarding navigator was great! The 4 of July pushed me back, due to offices being closed, then traveling from Florida to New Hampshire took a couple days. Once I arrived, Demi guided me through the process quickly to finish the rest of my onboarding quickly. She was in contact with the hospital numerous times for 2 days clarifying everything. She truly made my onboarding process a breeze! Thank you Nomad and Demi!

I love being part of the Nomad team

I love being part of the Nomad team. Everyone has always been helpful and resourceful. If there every is a problem, they are up to the task of finding an answer. Recently, I had a contract that was canceled prior to my start date. As soon as it happened, my navigator called to let me know so, that I could start looking for another contract. Sure enough, I had another offer within 2 days.

My Nomad experience

The application process was easy- my navigators were quick to answer any questions that I had. I never had any trouble submitting my time sheet for payment. This was my first experience working with a travel agency- I took the plunge after almost 32 years of hospital nursing and I’m so glad I did. I took a 12 week assignment at a small rural hospital- I loved it! Deciding to become a travel nurse was hands down my best decision as a nurse. More money, less stress.

I know you are all doing a great job.

I know you are all doing a great job. I would like to suggest that, given my experience with application submissions, that frequently asked questions, some of which are already included in profiles, be included in applications. Questions like: who was your manager, clinical experience, etc. I am a Medical/Surgical/Telemetry RN. I do hope that is already showing in my profile. I am saying this because time is of great essence. Thank you.

Nomad is the best

Nomad has been the best travel agency I ever worked with! They are organized and they offer higher pay packages than any other agencies I have been with! Their process is pretty straight forward and you do still get to talk to someone to help you through the process of getting hired! They have an app that is pretty easy to navigate and you get a pretty straight forward profile from them easy one click applications to jobs! I would highly recommend NoMad to anyone who wants to do travel nursing!

Easy to apply

The ease of placing in applications are what is most beneficial. Points only deducted because there are hidden assessments needed and you are suddenly bombarded with these when it is not a guarantee to get the position. In addition, if it were known of such assessments, time will be better managed before submitting an entry if knowing one will have to do assessments after. Other than that, things flow well. There are just a lot of emails to stay on top of everything.

Best. Travel. Company. Ever.

Nomad Health genuinely cares about what’s going on with you professionally and personally. It’s great to know that everything isn’t about a dollar and there is an actual person who cares about your well-being especially when our job is to care for others.

My Nomad Navigator is the BEST!!!

There has been a few bumps along the way but for the most part Nomad has been fantastic to try out my first travel nursing assignment! As far as I can tell from looking at other agencies Nomad pays the highest rates for the same job offers. My Navigator Raven is AMAZING!!!! I super appreciate her much more than I can even explain!!!! And I really hope I get to keep her for all of my assignments ❤️🙌

My First Encounter

I found this website while surfing the web one late afternoon. I filled out an application and received a call from an associate the next morning. Being new to this kind of platform I experienced a few glitches but were quickly resolved after a few messages. My applications were reviewed and submitted to the facilities in a timely manner. Great job!

Date of experience : October 20, 2022

Guaranteed hours

Nomad gives you guaranteed hours so if you’re cancelled by the facility you’ll get paid for those hours. They don’t offer guaranteed hours if you get canceled of during a holiday week or during a week you called in sick. I think this shouldn’t be because if you’re cancelled for every shift during a holiday week you don’t get paid. I understand not giving guaranteed hours for a holiday shift but for the entire week it’s ludicrous. Not a bad company but needs a tone of improvements.

Nomad Health is a remarkable company

Nomad Health is a remarkable company. Easy to maneuver the job searches, easy to make your preferences, wonderful, knowledgeable and friendly staff to help you with EVERYTHING. The pay is correct and on time. The benefits are wonderful. (I’m just starting to navigate that) The only improvement I can see is to submit jobs a little faster. It seems to take a few days at times. I am new to travel nursing and I hope I can stay with Nomad to the end. I can’t imagine an easier more efficient way to work, and I gladly tell anyone that will listen.

Experience at Nomad Health

Well for me I found everything to be very interesting and actually I can clearly confirm that Nomad Health are the best. When it comes to support team they are always ready to assist the individuals. Nomad Health is also ready and willingly to help nurses to get access to a job that matches their preferences as quickly as possible because they send direct emails immediately when there`s a vacancy. I also love the fact that they also indicate the ranging salary to be paid at any job Also the specialist are ready to take you through the whole journey of securing you a job, which for me I found it very interesting... Overall, for me it was a great experience to knowing Nomad Health. It was also very easy to navigate through the pages and no any frustrations. I guarantee anyone that when they`re at Nomad Health, they`re at the right place.

No communication on required documents - which differs per position

This company will reject and throw out your application before telling you what the required documents are. I've tried to apply to four jobs now. Later I see they threw out my application for something as simple as a drivers license. I can easily upload that. Why wouldn't they message or communicate that this position would like the drivers license in order to submit? No, they do not communicate that. Instead, they just throw out your application without communicating. That is not a sign of professionalism nor a good company.

Date of experience : January 12, 2024

Multiple IT issues, application rejected for no license yet that’s my home state w license in hand, no way to get urgent help

Recruiter missed a message from me, job I wanted to be submitted to closed while waiting for response. I understand they are busy and doing best they can. No worries. On to the next. Found a new position, in my home state, applied immediately. Profile 100% complete. Receive auto response back my submission was withdrawn and canceled bc I “didn’t have active state license in hand for state the job was located.” Except I do. First license listed on my profile. My home state license, even! Not expired til 2024–over a year away. ZERO ability to get a hold of anyone to rectify the issue despite texting the “urgent help w application” line for help.

The pay and benefits were great

The pay and benefits were great , my only two problems when I got there no one knew when I was coming so they were not ready for me and I got started two days late and my insurance accidentally got canceled on me. How ever I really liked Bunny She was always very helpful and east to get ahold of

Date of experience : April 18, 2023

Great submission timeframe

I complained the first time when my application was cancelled without a reason. Then from then on they treated me great. Better, the submission time around is way shorter than it was at the beginning. That’s what matters the most

Nomad Travel Nursing Agency Review 2023

  • Last Updated: April 18, 2023

Nomad Travel Nursing agency is part of the greater Nomad Health platform. It’s one of the first digital marketplaces for staffing healthcare professionals, including travel nurses .

The company has built a streamlined, digital platform. This allows travel nurses to browse:

  • Job openings
  • Pay packages
  • Other job details

All of these things can be done on the platform before reaching out to the recruiter.

Nomad Health was started in 2015 by Dr. Alexi Nazem, and it is headquartered in NYC.

The company has had an impressive growth since its inception. In fact, they raised $12 million in funding in 2018 and another $34 million in 2019.

The agency has jobs nationwide and doesn’t only cater to travel nurses. They also help find positions for physicians and LPN’s.

Read on to learn about the pros and cons of this staffing agency and see if it might be a good fit for you!

Table of contents

Negative nomad travel nursing reviews, postive nomad travel nursing reviews, the upsides, the downsides , how to become a travel nurse with nomad, should you choose nomad travel nursing .

Travel Nursing with Nomad certainly has it’s mixed bag of reviews. There are plenty of both 5 star and 1 star reviews.

It seems there isn’t much middle ground between the positive and negative reviews. In fact, it appears to boil down to one thing: communication.

As any travel nurse knows, communication from a recruiter can make or break your experience.

While the compensation packages tend to be on the higher end, reviews like these can be concerning for anyone taking a travel assignment:

“My Travel Nursing experience with Nomad wasn’t great. Communication between office and staff nurses is poor and they do NOT stand behind their nurses. Hiring process was excruciating even after the job offer, found out that they still had not completed all their background & reference checks. Office staff is very pushy when they need something from you, however administration will not return calls when you call them.” -CeeCee Wilis, RN, Corpus Chirsti, TX
“I’ve had much better Travel Nursing companies, do yourself a favor and stay away from Nomad.” – Emily Stromberg, RN, Austin, TX
“I had a recruiter laugh at me during a conference call.” document.addEventListener("DOMContentLoaded", function(event) {ESY.Widget({category_id: '231',title: 'Search Nursing Programs Enrolling Now',widget_layout: 'horizontal',domain_id: 'betternurse.org',widget_id: '',custom_options: '',intro: '',type: 'search'});}); -Jesse McNay, RN, Wyoming, USA

Not all nurses who did an assignment with Nomad Travel Nursing had a bad experience. Some highlighted their experience by saying:

“I had a great experience with Nomad Travel Nursing. No issues at all and I would recommend them.”  -Emily Nathan, RN, Tacoma, WA
“I love Nomad Travel Nursing and I truly feel like they would do anything for me. This is my second assignment with them and they are always communicative, and I can’t forget to mention they’re pay is the best I’ve seen!”  -Danielle Wright RN, Grand Rapids, MI
“Nomad Travel Nursing is the BEST! Danielle is the best recruiter and this is my third assignment with her. They are clear, concise, and pay on time. I’ve had no issues and look forward to more assignments after this one!” -Katie Parker, RN, Omaha, NE

Pros and Cons of Nomad Travel Nursing

As with any travel nursing agency, Nomad has it’s share of advantages and disadvantages.

While their digital platform is a great resource, the possibility of poor communication may be something to keep in mind.

  • Medical, dental and vision benefits
  • Weekly pay (every Friday)
  • Licensure reimbursement
  • Digital platform to browse and find contracts
  • Can be best for seasoned travelers
  • Some reviews note poor communication from recruiters

Nomad Travel Nursing’s platform makes browsing and starting a travel nursing assignment a breeze.

It’s way more advanced than some other travel nursing agencies . This will help streamline your experience. However, you will need a few things in order to start traveling, so it’s important to take care of them:

  • Up-to-date resume (you will need to upload this to their portal)
  • Know your available start date (as well as any requested time off you may have)
  • Current photo and SSN number
  • State licenses and certifications
  • Work Experience
  • References (they prefer at least two references)

Overall, Nomad Travel Nursing is a great option for nurses looking to take a more hands on approach when picking up assignments.

Their transparent and robust website allows you to browse all available assignments, including pay packages. They also have “concierges” (essentially recruiters) who will help you get through the whole process.

With their big funding rounds, we expect to see a lot more from Nomad, especially from a technology standpoint.

Based out of New York City, Nomad Health was founded in 2015, by multiple doctors, including CEO, M.D. Alexi Nazem. Having staffed over 250,000 healthcare workers throughout the United States, Nomad is a growing and reputable choice when looking for a healthcare staffing agency to work with.

Is Nomad a Good Travel Nurse Agency?

Despite being a startup that has been around for less than a decade, Nomad Health is ranked similarly to longstanding travel nursing agencies.

You may have heard about Nomad's recent internal layoff. As reported by CEO Alexi Nazem in a Forbes interview, this is due to the dynamically shifting economy since COVID.

It is easy to understand that COVID brought a huge influx of patients, which created an increased need for registered nurses. Although there is still a high need for travel RNs the influx from COVID has diminished, forcing Nomad to downsize.

Despite the ever-changing economy, Nomad continues to work with registered nurses, healthcare workers, and hospitals nationwide to fill the ongoing staffing shortage -- keeping them amongst the top choices for RNs seeking travel opportunities.

What Travel Nurses are saying about Nomad Health

According to a five-star rating system, travel RNs ranked Nomad Health:

  • 3.2 on Indeed
  • 3.9 on Glassdoor
  • 4.6 on Trustpilot

In comparison to companies like Travel Nurses Across America, Cross Country, Medical Solutions, and Aya Healthcare, which have been around much longer, Nomad's Indeed rating of 3.2 is relatively lower:

  • Travel Nurses Across America has a 4.1
  • Cross Country has a 3.4
  • Medical Solutions has a 4.1
  • Aya Healthcare has a 4.2

When you start reading travel RN reviews there' quite a wide range of satisfaction, making it difficult to really gauge if Nomad is a good travel nurse agency. As you dig through the reviews, it becomes clear that the lower ratings primarily come down to poor communication and response times:

One-Star Reviews

Quote "Stay away from this company. Does not communicate at all. Takes 48 hrs or more for someone to get back with you. Very slow with processing applications. Not a good company for travel nurses"
Quote "There are no recruiters or anyone who knows anything about the nursing profession. This company is a waste of time, energy and resources and should be avoided...."

Five-Star Reviews

Quote "If you know the travel world this process is made so much easier. If you are unfamiliar the first contract might seem intimidating with no recruiter but really it's just a bunch of pre employment stuff you need to be aware of...."
Quote "If you are the type of person that isn't needy and just wants to do their assignment perfect agency for you...."
Quote "No recruiters, makes it hard to not have someone to settles issues. You get a 'nurse navigator' who is often slow to respond. But, that being said, you are paid more since they don't have recruiters"

So is Nomad Health poor with their response times, or is the system simply set up differently than most other healthcare staffing agencies?

When comparing Nomad to other travel nurse agencies it is important to keep in mind that they are more of an online marketplace, which increases the overall efficiency of obtaining a travel RN contract but eliminates the supportive recruiter.

Nomad does utilize navigators, a team of Nomad employees trained and available to support you throughout all steps of travel nursing, but it's not the same handholding experience you will find with other agencies.

Pros & Cons

As with any other temporary healthcare staffing agency, there will be pros and cons. Here are some of the most important to think about:

  • Higher Pay Packages.
  • Licensure Reimbursement.
  • Certification Reimbursement, if needed for the position.
  • Travel Reimbursement.
  • Easy application and hiring process.
  • Medical, Dental, and Vision Benefits.
  • Retirement Benefits.
  • Browse travel nurse jobs available, job descriptions, job requirements, and pay packages– before connecting with Nomad staff or filing an application.
  • Apply to travel RN job openings independently.
  • A Nomad navigator assigned to you once your credentialing process is complete.
  • Easy to update your application.
  • Easy to view missing job requirements on your profile.
  • Best for experienced travel RNs, or nurses ready to manage their credentialing process.
  • Potential for slower response times, per reviews.
  • Cannot apply for a job opening unless the license and certifications required are in hand – even if you can get them easily.
  • Navigate the application, hiring, and credentialing process without a direct point of contact (some Travelers see this as a Pro).

Nomad Health Application Process

Nomad's online marketplace makes applying for new travel nurse contracts hassle-free. If you are unfamiliar with the hiring process there may be some road bumps along the way, but nothing a registered nurse can't handle.

Before applying, it's important to note that Nomad requires each of their travel RNs to have at least 12 months of experience in the specialty you are applying to, within the last 2 years.

Further, they require more experience for travel nurses in a specialized field, like Cardiac ICU.

Travel Nurse Credentials

  • Here you can see job descriptions and requirements for travel RN job openings.

  • With Nomad's online marketplace platform, the application process is hassle-free.
  • The best part is no waiting or depending on a recruiter to submit for you!
  • Next, you wait. As with any job application, it takes some time for references to get processed.
  • Most of Nomad Health's travel nurse job openings are on a first come first serve basis so long as you fulfill the job requirements the contract is yours.

nomad-congrats-message.thumb.jpg.a8770871d5427c603751e46c22406b4c.jpg

  • After you formalize the offer in writing, Nomad will send you a travel RN contract to sign. It is imperative to triple-check your contract before signing, ensuring all the details are accurate, especially your pay package, required hours, and job description. Check out this article: Want to Be a Travel Nurse? to guide you through the onboarding process in more detail.
  • Background Check
  • Fingerprinting
  • Immunizations
  • Relias Testing

As a travel RN with Nomad Health, you can enjoy the benefit of quickly seeing the job requirements specific to you for each job opening once your application and profile are fully updated. This makes the process of applying for future travel nurse contracts even more hassle-free than your first one.  (See Photo 5)

This is a general overview; for more detailed information check out Nomad Health's Insurance FAQ , here you can find a phone number to speak with a UHC representative if you have more specific questions.

Nomad Health's insurance coverage is relatively standard for the travel nursing industry, but by offering various plans they allow you to make the best decision for you and your family.

Your insurance with Nomad kicks in on day one of your first travel RN assignment and ends when your contract is complete. If you plan to work another contract with Nomad within fourteen days, you will maintain your insurance. If you take more than fourteen days off after an assignment Nomad offers you the option to switch your benefits to COBRA.

Should you choose to get insurance through Nomad, UHC also provides the following services to Nomad travel nurses.

  • 24/7 counseling.
  • Telemedicine health provider.
  • 3 in-person visits with a mental health provider.

My Personal Experience with Nomad

Overall, Nomad was a great healthcare staffing agency to collaborate with and I recommend them to any experienced registered nurses seeking travel nurse opportunities.

As a seasoned travel RN, I found the application process very easy. Within three days I had my application submitted, processed, and was hired.  But I can resonate with some of the travel RN reviews about the slow responses and disorganized onboarding process because the most challenging part of working with Nomad Health was the onboarding process.

Unlike my experience with healthcare staffing agencies that use nurse recruiters, I had to be more involved in the Nomad credentialing process. Instead of a recruiter telling me each step, I had to ensure all the pieces were complete. But with good communication, I was fully onboarded and ready to start work within 7-10 days.

Through my onboarding experience, I learned that it is best to skip the email and go straight to the Nomad platform for questions and inquiries. Once you have a profile set up you have access to a messaging service on your profile, I found a much faster response when utilizing this platform.

When the credentialing process was complete, I was assigned a Nomad navigator, who worked with me throughout the remainder of my contract. She was very responsive to all forms of communication, and always made sure to let me know whom to contact if she planned to be out of the office. My Nomad navigator guided me through contract extensions and timecard questions, as well as walked me through what to do when I was sick.

As a bonus, they even paid me when I was out sick!  Granted this was during COVID and I am not sure if this policy remains in effect.

Unfortunately, like many other healthcare staffing agencies, Nomad is not free from contract rate decreases. About halfway through my contract extension, I was notified of a rate decrease to my contract. With a nearly 50% rate decrease, my pay package remained higher than most (maybe all) the travel RNs contracted through other healthcare staffing agencies working at the same hospital.

I chose not to take the extension out of principle; I don't think it is right to break a contract. When I relayed this to my navigator, she continued to treat me with dignity and respect, and neither Nomad nor the hospital I was staffed at placed me on a Do Not Return/Rehire list. My Nomad navigator remained very supportive and was ready to help me find job openings for my next travel RN contract.

Again, I'd highly recommend Nomad Health. As a bonus, I love how once you are established your application is ready to be updated and submitted to your next potential assignment, as well as the ability to see pay packages upfront.

Additionally, Nomad is one of few healthcare staffing agencies that does not repeatedly call or text me for travel RN contracts, with their hassle-free online marketplace Nomad leaves the process up to me as the travel nurse, which I love.
