Star Trek the Experience Location

Star trek the experience reviews, stay at the hilton because of the star trek experience.

I have to travel to Las Vegas to attend several Trade Show and I always stay at the Hilton because of the Star Trek Experience. I will take a tram or a taxi to the trade show as opposed to a much shorter transit, just to stay at the Hilton and at the Experience. Trade Shows can be boring but a fresh light at the end of the tunnel has always been the Experience. I am shocked the Experience is closed and it has resulted in my Family and I now staying another hotel on the strip. Live long and Prosper to all that loved the Experience and that would love to see it be reborn elsewhere! Sincerely, WP Vos

I LIKE THE FOOD AT QUARKS

The main reason I go to Vegas and stay at the Hilton is because of Star Trek Experience. I love the atmosphere and the people that work there. The place is very very clean. I like the food at Quark’s and am sorry to hear that STTE may close at the end of the yet, because I haven’t tried some other items on their menu. If it does not my plans are to spend Christmas there. If it does I will not be going to Vegas.

WONDERFUL EXPERIENCE

I want to stay at the same time I spent at Star Trek the Experience was a wonderful experience. I hope to make it to experience the Star Trek Experience again this year. It would be a sure shame if this one of a kind event closed. I would promote the experience as a wonderful time for the whole family.

MOST FANTASTIC TIME

We visited Star Trek the Experience last year from Australia. We spent the whole day there and had the most FANTASTIC time. The timeline details were fascinating. The behind the scenes was very very informative. The characters around the place were such fun to interact with. And it was wheelchair friendly-nig bonus for me. We are so sorry to hear it is closing down. We were saving up to come again. RIP Star Trek The Exhibition.

SOMETHING NEW TO ENJOY

I have been to the Experience many times over the years and I always find something new to enjoy along with all my previous fun. I loved going onto the bridge of TNG’s Enterprise. And what a hoot it is to see all the characters around from all over the galaxy. A must do is to eat at Quark’s, but watch out the owner may try to sell you a napkin.

I AM VERY DISAPPOINTED THAT THE STAR TREK EXPERIENCE IS NOT AVAILABLE

I am very disappointed that the Star Trek experience is not available. I have been pumping up my family ,most of whom are flying for the very 1st time, about this attraction. This was going to be one of the major highlights of our trip. The 1st time my husband and I visited Vegas we came to the Hilton and had a blast at the Star Trek Adventure and have talked about t every since. Please open back up. If this is due to the financial crunch just lower your prices a little bit and maybe more people could afford to come.

STAR TREK THE BAR IS THE FUNNSET AFTER YOU DO THE VIRTUAL RIDE

Me and my friends go to Vegas every year after some times twice a year and always made it a point to visit the Hilton’s Star Trek the bar is the funnest after you do the virtual ride. I was there the last night open just by chance and am very disappointed to see it leave. It was one of my highlights going to Vegas over the last 10 years.

I was disappointed to hear the attraction was closing. I am planning a trip to Vegas and wanted to was going to book rooms at the Hilton until I learned the experience had closed. I guess we stay at Treasure Island.

Say it isn’t so! Our group was looking forward to seeing this attraction. I would have thought with the new movie it would have been very popular. We are all disappointed.

BRING IT BACK!

I really enjoyed my visit to the “Star Trek” Hilton. I especially loved Quark’s Bar where the 6ft plus Klingon “lady” put my know-it-all ex propery in his place and speechless for the first time in his life! I’d pay just to have her do the Divorce-paper servings!LOL

THE GREATEST TIME

My wife and I come to Vegas 3 or 4 times a year & always stayed at the Hilton because of Star Trek Experience & Quark’s bar. We no longer stay at the Hilton. We stay every where else. To the Hilton you made a big mistake, bring back The Experience & Quarks!!!

The unofficial  56-Year Mission: Las Vegas convention moves from its longtime home at the Rio All-Suite Hotel & Casino to Bally’s Las Vegas this year — as the former locale undergoes major renovations — and will be slightly-reduced four-day event, running from Thursday, August 25 through Sunday, August 28.

As of this writing, Creation is advertising 130 guests for the event — and while a great number of those listed are one-off guest actors, panelists for Trek- related content, podcasters, or fans with creative projects, there is still a good representation of on-screen Star Trek stars scheduled to attend.

From the Kelvin Timeline films, Spock actor Zachary Quinto will be making his first appearance at the annual convention in several years — along with Keenser actor Deep Roy — while a fourth film for their Enterprise crew remains in production limbo following its announced 2023 release projection.

The modern era of  Star Trek production will be well represented in Las Vegas, as Anson Mount (Pike) and Rebecca Romijn (Number One) from Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , Kate Mulgrew (Janeway) and John Noble (The Diviner) from Star Trek: Prodigy , Tawny Newsome from Star Trek: Lower Decks , Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine), Michelle Hurd (Raffi), Annie Wersching (Borg Queen), Evan Evagora (Elnor), Isa Briones (Soji), James Callis (Maurice Picard) from Star Trek: Picard  will all be in attendance.

Star Trek: Discovery cast members  Sonequa Martin-Green (Burnham), Anthony Rapp (Stamets), Blu del Barrio (Adira), Tig Notaro (Jett Reno), Doug Jones (Saru), Ian Alexander (Gray), Emily Coutts (Detmer), Patrick Kwok-Choon (Rhys),  Phumzile Sitole (Ndoye), Mary Wiseman (Tilly), and Wilson Cruz (Culber) will all be on hand throughout the event.

William Shatner (Kirk), George Takei (Sulu), and Walter Koenig (Chekov) lead the Original Series representation, while Gates McFadden (Crusher), Jonathan Frakes (Riker), Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar), and John de Lancie (Q) will represent  The Next Generation .

Deep Space Nine cast attendees include Nana Visitor (Kira), Andrew Robinson (Garak), Armin Shimerman (Quark), Casey Biggs (Damar), Chase Masterson (Leeta), Cirroc Lofton (Jake Sisko), Jeffrey Combs (Weyoun), Max Grodenchik (Rom), Nicole de Boer (Ezri Dax), and Terry Farrell (Jadzia) —  as Tim Russ (Tuvok), Ethan Phillips (Neelix), Robbie McNeill (Paris), Robert Beltran (Chakotay) and Garrett Wang (Kim) represent Star Trek: Voyager , while John Billingsley (Phlox), Anthony Montgomery (Mayweather), Connor Trinneer (Tucker) covers the Enterprise era.

A great number of special events and panels are planned for the long Las Vegas weekend, including a Thursday night dinner and comedy show starring Star Trek: Discovery’s Tig Notaro (for those who purchased “Gold”-level tickets exclusively), as well as two  Star Trek movie screenings for milestone anniversaries —  Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan for its 40th, and  Star Trek: Nemesis which hits 20 years this winter.

Designer Geoffrey Mandel will take fans behind the scenes of Star Trek: Picard , presenting a look at the graphics work that has gone into the Paramount+ series, and he’ll also be exploring his well-loved Star Trek: Star Charts book which is still used as galactic map reference material in the modern-day Star Trek production offices.

A number of science-focused panels are also planned, including  Star Trek’s Greatest Biological hits and Near-Misses with Dr. Mohamad Noor,  The Real Astrometrics Lab with astrophysics expert Dr. Norbert Zacharias,  Space Exploration with Arizona State University’s Professor David Williams, and many more.

While at Bally’s for the convention, Otoy showcase an immersive “The Cage” experience, enabling viewers to explore the first deck of the Enterprise created by Roddenberry for the initial pilot of Star Trek . The fully immersive, interactive, 360-degree experience allows audiences to navigate around the Starship Enterprise Bridge and even sit in Captain Pike’s chair as if they were there on set of “The Cage” in 1964.

Watch on Deadline

Also unveiled in Las Vegas were recreations of scenes from Star Trek ‘s early TV and film history that can be explored in 3D with actors Mahé Thaissa and Lawrence Selleck bringing “The Cage”‘s Yeoman Colt and Mr. Spock to life. Recreations of the set from “The Cage” and the Enterprise Bridge was overseen by preeminent Star Trek cast and crew including Denise and Mike Okuda, authors of Star Trek: The Encyclopedia , and renowned Star Trek VFX artists Doug Drexler and Daren Dochterman.

On a mainstage panel moderated by Gates McFadden, who played Dr. Beverly Crusher in projects ranging from Star Trek: The Next Generation to Star Trek: Picard , Otoy’s Co-Founder and CEO, Jules Urbach, joined the Okudas and Dochterman, as well as Roddenberry Entertainment President Rod Roddenberry to discuss the past year of work on the Roddenberry Archive. The panel wound down with a concept teaser for the Star Trek immersive experiences titled “765874,” which was put together via cutting-edge virtual production technologies, as well as access to LightStage scans of original Star Trek uniforms, props and archival materials. Also presented was a second teaser, “Memory Wall,” exploring scenes and concepts of the characters in “The Cage” and Roddenberry’s novelization, Star Trek: The Motion Picture .

The immersive experiences were accompanied by the release of three supplemental video logs providing archival behind-the-scenes testimony surrounding the creation of the first Star Trek pilot. The videos featured interviews inside fully recreated, life-sized Star Trek virtual production sets with the Okudas; Chis Hunter, son of Jeffrey Hunter who played Captain Pike in “The Cage”; Sean Kenney who played Captain Pike in The Menagerie ; and Robert Butler, director of “The Cage.” The clips also highlighted archival photographs from the set of “The Cage,” and behind the scenes material drawn from thousands of documents that have been digitally archived by The Roddenberry Estate in collaboration with Otoy.

“For over a decade we have been collaborating with The Roddenberry Estate to preserve Gene Roddenberry’s legacy. Today’s release marks the first steps towards capturing Gene’s work in a new way that is fully immersive and interactive for future generations to experience Star Trek as if they were there in 1964,” said Urbach. “Gene Roddenberry saw into the future and projected a vision of the future where remarkable technologies affirmed the human spirit and ethical powers. Technological advances today in holographic imaging and real time graphics are making recreating his vision ever more possible and we are thrilled to work with the Roddenberry Estate to preserve Gene’s salient messages for humanity in the most authentic and open ways possible.”

“We started archiving materials from my father’s life over a decade ago hoping to preserve not just the iconic objects that made Star Trek such a successful franchise but more importantly the personal notes, internal documents, and never seen prototypes that fueled the various iterations of Star Trek ,” added Rod Roddenberry. “We wanted to provide a behind-the-scenes personal story about Gene and the evolution of the series, which has made such a profound impact on the development of humanity in the 20th century, inspiring so many around the world. With new real time and holographic technologies it is getting more and more possible to immerse new generations who didn’t experience Star Trek first-hand into my father’s universe, and we are thrilled to push forward on this new frontier in collaboration with 3D graphics pioneer, OTOY.”

The Roddenberry Archive immersive experience and behind-the-scenes video logs are available for the public to view online at this link . These materials will be augmented with additional archive features throughout 2022. All of the Roddenberry Archive documents are also preserved on the Render Network, providing an open blockchain digital archive of all of Roddenberry’s lifetime of works in an open format for future generations to access.

The 56-Year Mission: Las Vegas runs at Bally’s through August 28th. The Star Trek experience teaser “Memory Wall” can be viewed above.

I Don't Care If Modern Star Trek Breaks Established Canon

I’m glad voyager’s tom and b’elanna are no longer star trek's only successful romance, star trek officially brands a surprising deep space nine hero as a war criminal.

  • STLV: 57-Year Mission is the highly anticipated convention for fans of Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi creation. It is not a promotional tool for studios like San Diego Comic-Con.
  • Over 150 celebrity guests, including William Shatner and Sonequa Martin-Green, will be attending. There will also be writers, production designers, and professionals from various science fields.
  • The convention will feature panels, parties, cosplay, movie screenings, science panels, painting parties, and more. It promises to be an epic experience for fans of all generations.

STLV: 57-Year Mission run by Creation Entertainment is the most anticipated convention of 2023 for generations of fans to celebrate their love of Gene Roddenberry's most beloved sci-fi creation. STLV takes place from August 3-6, 2023, at the Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, and tickets can still be purchased at Creation's website . Due to the ongoing WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, STLV faces some challenges in terms of rebranding the event and limitations on what celebrity guests can discuss, but this won't damper the fun of the con and the enthusiasm of the fans in attendance.

STLV: 57-Year Mission is a convention independent of the studios like Paramount Global, unlike an event like San Diego Comic-Con , which is a promotional tool for the studios. All guests attending STLV are making personal appearances in conjunction with their guilds' guidelines. However, celebrities in attendance won't be able to discuss their work with the studios and streaming services they are striking against. Panels and events taking place at STLV: 57-Year Mission will be spread out over three separate stages at the Rio, with a dealer's room to purchase all manner of merchandise as well as celebrities signing autographs and posing for photo ops on the floor.

Celebrities In Attendance At STLV: 57-Year Mission

STLV: 57-Year Mission features one of Creation's biggest celebrity guest list. Over 150 celebrity guests are attending, including dozens of actors from Gene Roddenberry's sci-fi franchise from legacy series to the current shows now streaming, as well as actors from Seth MacFarlane's popular sci-fi series. Headliners include William Shatner, George Takei, Walter Koenig, Sonequa Martin-Green, Anson Mount, Jeri Ryan, Doug Jones, Ethan Peck, Paul Wesley , Tawny Newsome, and Zachary Quinto.

One of the biggest events at STLV: 57-Year Mission is the special Friday night reunion of actors Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Gates McFadden, Marina Sirtis, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn, John de Lancie, and Denise Crosby live on stage. While there are some unfortunate cancelations like Kate Mulgrew, Robert Duncan McNeill, and Jack Quaid, it's still an incredibly impressive line-up of beloved talent fans can meet for autographs and photos.

Along with actors, writers from several Roddenberry series will be on hand, including Terry Matalas, Brannon Braga, Kevin and Dan Hageman , and Aaron J. Waltke. Other guests include production designers and artists like the legendary Michael and Denise Okuda, Dave Blass, Doug Drexler, John Eaves, and Michael Westmore. Professionals from the varied science fields, including NASA personnel will also be in attendance, as well as producer Dave Zappone who will be speaking about his crowd-funded documentary To the Journey .

Panels & Parties At STLV: 57-Year Mission

Other panels to look forward to at STLV: 57-Year mission include what will be a fascinating Q&A with Kevin and Dan Hageman on Saturday, Resurrecting the Enterprise-D with production designers Dave Blass and Liz Kloczkowski on Sunday, a talk with the To The Journey production team including Dave Zappone, Joe Kornbrodt, Lolita Fatjo, and Ryan T. Husk also on Sunday, and The 7th Rule Panel with Cirroc Lofton, Denise Crosby, and Ryan T. Husk on Saturday.

STLV attendees will also have no shortage of parties to attend. The Saturday Night Gala will feature a live concert by The Action Figures, Greg Grunberg and Scott Grimes' rock band which will include special guest performances by Isa Briones, Todd Stashwick, Anthony Rapp, Chase Masterson, Tim Russ, and possibly more. There will be a Thursday night dinner and comedy show with Rick Overton, Bonnie Gordon, and Garrett Wang. Connor Trinneer, Dominic Keating, and Robert O'Reilly will host karoke Thursday and Friday night, and Sunday night will feature The Rat Pack, a 1950s-themed performance by Max Grodenchik, Jeffrey Combs, Casey Biggs, and Vaughn Armstrong to close out the con.

Creation Cosplay Contest & More Fun At STLV: 57-Year Mission

Of course, STLV: 57-Year Mission attendees are encouraged to cosplay as their favorite characters. One of the annual highlights of STLV, the Creation Cosplay Contest, takes place on Saturday with a Cosplay Parade in the morning and a group photo on the main stage. A panel of celebrity and expert judges will later choose the best cosplayers for prizes, including a $1000 gift certificate.

Even more events at STLV: 57-Year Mission including special movie screenings, several science panels, painting parties, Happy Hour at Jimmy's Place Bar & Cafe hosted by Chase Masterson, a Resurgence video game interactive experience on Saturday with Dan Martin, Brett Tosti, and Elias Toufexis, and performances by house band the Roddenberries. STLV: 57-Year Mission will undoubtedly be an epic experience for every generation of fan.

STLV: 57-Year Mission Happens August 3-6, 2023, at Rio All-Suites Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, NV. Tickets can be purchased at Creation Entertainment's website .

It’s not mandatory but a great way to jump-start the weekend and get early dibs on a la carte tickets for autographs and photo ops and merch in the vendors room. NOTE: This option DOES NOT include the Saturday Night Gala, autographs or photo ops, which can be purchased separately.

WOW, it is hard to believe that we have been running conventions for our fellow fans for almost 50 incredible years and what a ride it has been. Thanks to our fellow fans, we’ve loved bringing the stars direct to their audiences; and the tradition has continued and indeed been amped up greatly by our SUPERNATURAL CONVENTIONS. Join the celebration and be part of the unforgettable SPN family.  Unlike so many other genre conventions, Creation Entertainment has a strict company policy not to "oversell" our conventions. In other words, every patron, no matter what bracket of ticket they purchase, will have a seat in the main auditorium where the major guests appear and events take place.  Creation Entertainment has the right to refuse service to anyone who interferes with the safety and well-being of other patrons, staff, actors, Creation Entertainment and the establishment itself. This includes, but is not limited to, harassment of any kind both in advance and/or at a particular event, illegal activity, unreasonable rowdiness, patrons lacking adequate hygiene and inconsideration to others. Refusal of service shall never be based on race or color, National origin or citizenship status, religion or creed, sex, age, disability, pregnancy or genetic information, Veteran or Military status, marital status, sexual orientation or gender identity, medical condition, political affiliations or activities, or status as a victim of domestic violence, assault or stalking.

57-Year Mission Las Vegas Convention Packed With Star Trek Celebs Including Just Announced Zachary Quinto

star trek experience las vegas 2022

| July 28, 2023 | By: Anthony Pascale 21 comments so far

Next week, the annual Star Trek fan pilgrimage to Las Vegas, Nevada begins again for the 57-Year Mission Convention run by Creation Entertainment . TrekMovie will be there to cover the event, and we are even holding a panel and co-hosting a party. The event kicks off at the Rio Hotel Convention Center on Thursday, August 3 rd, and runs through Sunday the 6 th . Panels and events will be spread across three separate stages and there is, as always, a dealers room with Star Trek merchandise along with a number of celebrities signing autographs. While this year’s event will be held in the midst of two Hollywood strikes, it looks like that hasn’t had a big impact on the guest lineup of Trek celebrities and beyond. We have put together some of the highlights of this unofficial Trek event, which we still fondly think of as STLV (Star Trek Las Vegas).

Star Trek (and Orville ) stars lined up for Vegas

The total celebrity attendee list for this year is one of Creation’s biggest yet, with 159 guests lined up so far, including dozens of actors from across the franchise, from classic “legacy” shows, the new Paramount+ shows as well as the feature films (TOS, TNG, and Kelvin).

Big names include William Shatner, Anson Mount, Jeri Ryan, Sonequa Martin-Green, Tawny Newsome, Jonathan Frakes, Linda Park, Nana Visitor, and Michelle Hurd. In fact, most of the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Picard casts will be in Vegas, and there is a special Next Generation reunion with almost the entire cast. There is also a number of first-time Star Trek convention guests, like Paul Wesley from Strange New Worlds .

Fans will also find many other stars and guest stars from their favorite shows. This includes guest stars like Todd Stashwick from Picard , Andrew Robinson from DS9 and many more, including multi-appearance guest stars like John de Lancie, Jeffrey Combs, John Schuck, and Vaughn Armstrong. They even have Elias Toufexis from the upcoming fifth and final season of Discovery . And this year the guest list also extends beyond Star Trek to include The Orville , with five of the stars of Seth MacFarlane’s homage to TNG lined up, including Adrianne Palicki.

Strikes have some effect, but more stars still signing up

While the SAG and WGA strikes had a big impact on San Diego Comic-Con, that was because that convention is used by the studios as a promotional event. The Creation 57-Year Mission convention is fully independent of the studios, in particular Paramount Global, and all guests are attending as personal appearances, fully allowed within the guild rules. Celebrities will be still be doing panels, although SAG does have restrictions regarding discussions of struck work. Everything else will be pretty much the same, with actors doing photo ops (with fans in cosplay not presenting any obstacles) and signing autographs. Separately, licensed photos of the actors as their Star Trek characters will be available to purchase from Creation at the event, and actors are allowed to sign those as well.

As for COVID, this year masks are optional for guests. There are no tests or vaccine requirements and it is up to the actors if they want to use the plastic divider for photo ops.

While there has been a handful of cancellations in the last couple of weeks (like Kate Mulgrew and Jack Quaid), that is typical. In fact, Creation co-CEO Gary Berman tells TrekMovie, “Normally at this time, we’d have more cancellations.” Creation has even been adding to the list this week including today’s confirmation that Zachary Quinto (Spock from the Kelvin movies) will be attending. Other recent additions include Greg Grunberg ( Star Trek Beyond ) and Jonathan Del Arco (TNG and Picard ).

The strikes are just the latest challenge that Creation has had to navigate in recent years.  This annual convention is a particular passion for co-founders Gary Berman and Adam Malin, who started running Star Trek events in the 1970s. Speaking to TrekMovie, Berman wanted to thank the fans for their continued support:

I would really like to thank the fans for supporting our fan conventions. I think all of the convention promoters have been through a lot of difficulty with COVID, especially the independent ones like us. We had to cancel 30 shows, giving out refunds and so forth. Now we’re rolling along with the new punches. So I think it’s really important for Adam and I to thank all the fans for supporting us.

Berman also confirmed that Creation will be back at the Rio in 2024 for the 58-Year Mission, noting the resort is getting millions in renovations over the next year.

Behind-the-scenes pros, scientists, and beyond

Beyond the big stars, Creation has also lined up an impressive list of behind-the-scenes vets from the franchise, including a number of writers and showrunners like Brannon Braga (TNG, Voyager , Enterprise ), Terry Matalas ( Picard ), and Kevin & Dan Hageman ( Prodigy ). And there are a number of great Trek designers and artists attending like Dave Blass, Mike & Denise Okuda, Doug Drexler, John Eaves, and Michael Westmore. All will be appearing on stage, some doing multiple panels; Picard production designer Dave Blass is doing a couple of deep dives into season 3. There will also be a panel headed up by producer Dave Zappone giving an update on the upcoming Voyager documentary To the Journey .

It’s official! I will be attending #STLV2023 next weekend. I’ll be joining the #StarTrekProdigy Saturday panel with @namicomposer , @brothershageman and @BonnieBellG . Be sure to wear your Prodigy cosplays to the panel! Some fun surprises… and maybe an impromptu contest or two. pic.twitter.com/e3MUNGjuxf — Aaron J. Waltke (@GoodAaron) July 25, 2023

As usual, there are also a number of scientists and professionals lined up to talk about how Star Trek matches up with the real world: academics, NASA personnel, computer experts, even lawyers, plus a certain experimental petrologist who’s part of the TrekMovie team.

Folks who're interested in hearing why we have NO "confirmation" that "aliens" exist—plus numerous other reasons critical thinking is crucial in today's world—please join me, @DVDGeeks , @kaylai , @mafnoor , and Meredith Mikell for "The Demon-Haunted World" at #STLV next weekend! — James Kerwin (@JamesKerwin) July 27, 2023

There will also be panels held by Star Trek experts and podcasts including the team from the Inglorious Treksperts and some of us at TrekMovie.com (more on that below).

Excited to announce that USS Titan set designer @JamesAddink will be joining us at #STLV . A great opportunity for folks to chat with James about the technical design of the interior of the ship. pic.twitter.com/jk4vI0pIyp — Dave Blass 🔜STLV (@DaveBlass) July 26, 2023

Party like it’s 2023

Like every year, there will be a number of special events held in the evenings. There will be stand-up comedy from Rick Overton and Voyager’s Garrett Wang, karaoke parties with Enterprise’s Dominic Keating and Connor Trinneer, and a Wednesday night “convention kick-off” dance party with The Roddenberries band. Greg Grunberg’s band will be supplying the tunes for the Saturday night festivities—along with some special guests. There will also be nightly movie screenings of Star Trek films, including the fan favorite Trek homage Galaxy Quest . And of course there’s always the annual costume contest.

STLV 2024 Levels Up With Big Celebrity Guests And ‘Treksperts’ Stage Packed With Star Trek Luminaries

Wait, what!? If Zachary is joining, Kelvin announcement!?

Unlikely. If we were getting that it would have been at SDCC. iirc this is just for fans and there’s usually not anything announced there.

Oh that was a joke sorry

That’s funny. It’s cool he and Peck will be on stage together though.

Wish I could go this year.

Looking forward to seeing y’all at the Prodigy panel!

We’re huge fans Aaron and I know that panel will be packed now since Paramount screwed you guys. 🙄

Sorry should say ‘I’, I ruffled some feathers here recently when I say we.

I made this post before I realized I changed laptops and made a typo. sorry. It’s fixed now.

ML51 says don’t forget to pickup milk on your way home tonight, because little ML11 is hungry.

I’ve always wanted to go to this. Sadly I don’t see being able to go for a while. My window closed. Wife doesn’t have as much time for travel now. And this would always be a tough sell for her.

Can you imagine members of the United Auto Workers doing this during a strike?

So the poor slob actors and writers who aren’t making the mid-size and higher money will remain on the picket line during the heat wave next week, while Quinto and all the rest here get their personal appearance fees and $75 per pop fan photos in an air conditioned hotel in Las Vegas. And then we had Fran Drescher, the SAG president who has a net worth of $30M+, over in Italy doing her highly paid appearance with a Kardashian as the strike was about to begin. What a crock.

If you are in the recognizable to elite range, this strike ain’t so bad. :-(

I would like to live in the universe where Jeffrey Combs is elite. I think my brain is shorting out imagining it. That would be paradise for me.

For this strike I would just like to see a little more Norma Rae and a little less Ferris Buellar’s Day Off.

It would be great if Playmates Toys would seize the opportunity to attend and let us all know what’s up with them. It’s ridiculous that they aren’t addressing any of their customers questions are concerns regarding Star Trek toys. Please Trekmovie, get us some kind of answers!

I am always up for more Playmates.

Is Playmates still moving forward with the Trek license? I had read that sales weren’t a good as they thought they’d be and I’ve seen some of the announced figures are now canceled.

Wow sounds great. I’m was really excited about seeing Mulgrew there and was disappointed when she pulled out. But this looks like more will be showing up than I thought.

I’m interested in seeing the Prodigy panel the most to support it and really excited to see Terry Matalas to talk about Picard.

Also excited for the Voyager Documentary update. I’m all caught up with the Delta Flyers podcast. For any Voyager fan I definitely recommend checking it out, It’s really good.

Hard to believe Gary and Adam started with a single comic book convention in NYC when they were teenagers in 1970! (Yes, I know they sold and then bought back Creation at one point!)

Anyone else miss when they’d do weekend Scifi/Comics shows in major (and mid-sized cities) 2-3 times a year – at one point doing 100 or more a year!

I’ve attended this convention in the past and the camaraderie between fans has been amazing. You can sit at a table with total strangers, but your love of Star Trek makes you instant friends. I’m sorry I can’t attend this year.

I’ve always wanted to go to one of these. They look like a lot of fun.

How Star Trek Came to Las Vegas

Unsurprisingly, it was a huge gamble.

Star Trek: The Experience

StarTrek.com

CW: After the closure of Star Trek: The Experience in 2008, Gary Goddard was accused of sexual misconduct by 8 actors in 2017.

In early 1998, the “coolest thing to happen to Star Trek since the Enterprise-E ” (at least according to the Desert News ) opened in Las Vegas, Nevada at the Las Vegas Hilton. Star Trek: The Experience was an expansive, 65,000-square foot space that included a walk-through exhibit of props and costumes, a simulator thrill ride, and an immersive shopping and dining area populated by aliens and other intergalactic visitors. It embraced the various series’ optimistic outlook on the future, combining, at one point, storylines from The Next Generation , Voyager , and Deep Space Nine eras, and offered a unique experience that was just as thrilling for die-hard fans as it was for average tourists less steeped in the lore. While Star Trek: The Experience closed its doors in 2008, it remains beloved (and deeply missed) by those that visited and the staff that populated the attraction. And, true to form, the tale of how Star Trek landed in Las Vegas offers the kind of twists and turns that you could only expect from your favorite space saga.

STLV 2019: That's a Wrap

First Contact

Initially, Star Trek was going to come to Las Vegas in a very different form. In the early 1990s a consortium of businesses wanted to inject fresh life into the ailing downtown area, which had been all but overcome by the new hotels and resorts on the strip. A call was put out for submissions. “Their requirements were, they wanted a project of such magnitude that it would draw back the business from the strip. That’s an almost impossible task,” said Gary Goddard, a former Imagineer whose company Landmark Entertainment entered the competition. Their pitch? “What if we built the Starship Enterprise , full-size?”

Star Trek: The Experience

Since some of the stipulations of the project were that it couldn’t be a hotel or casino, since the financiers of the eventual project were the hotels and the casinos downtown, the Enterprise would instead feature an attraction, a restaurant (utilizing translucent glass that could transition from a view of downtown Las Vegas to space and back again), and a walking tour of the ship. They brought in Kenny Ball, one of the chief engineers of EPCOT, to deliver an engineering analysis (they had to take into account Vegas’ heavy winds when designing the iconic upper disc area of the ship). “To say the least, it ignited everyone down there. The competition was suddenly put on hold because they wanted to know if we could do this,” Goddard said. He then went about securing the rights from Paramount with the caveat that the final word on the project would come from the studio. The consortium of downtown casinos and hotels approved the project’s budget and the mayor had signed off on the project. “This was really a done deal,” Goddard said.

That is, of course, until the big meeting, full of Paramount executives (who were supportive of the project) and the mayor of Las Vegas. That was the moment when Paramount President Stanley Jaffe decided to shut it all down. Jaffe was concerned that, if the project wasn’t a success, it would be there forever, a looming monument to his big mistake. "He turned it down in that meeting,” Goddard remembered. “It died in one day, in Stanley Jaffe’s office.” In its place was built the Fremont Street Experience, perhaps best known for Viva Vision, a domed video-screen “canopy” that stretches over the street. Still, the dream for Star Trek in Las Vegas lingered in Goddard’s mind.

Star Trek: The Experience

The Undiscovered Country

“A year or two” after his ambitious Star Trek Enterprise attraction was canceled, Goddard, who was then in the peak of his career, having completed work on two beloved attractions (Universal’s T2-3D and The Amazing Adventures of Spider-Man), received a phone call.  “The president of the Las Vegas Hilton was a huge Star Trek fan and he had a need. Hilton is off the strip and Hilton had a double or triple challenge because they had to get people to make the decision to get off the strip and go to their casino. He thought Star Trek might be the way,” Goddard said. Hilton entered into discussions with Paramount, who at the time were operating a number of theme parks where they basically affixed Paramount IP to classic roller coasters (like the Wayne’s World -themed The Hurler at Paramount's Carowind in North Carolina). This was something completely different.

When they hired Goddard, Paramount had a loose idea about what the attraction would be. “They asked us to come onboard and they had worked out a basic concept. They basically wanted to beam people aboard, that was their idea, and an adventure ensues,” Goddard said. And out of this skeletal concept, a sprawling project would unfurl that combined a walk-through attraction, massive museum that highlighted the Star Trek timeline, and immersive themed retail and dining corridor. They were boldly going.

The Voyage Home

Star Trek: The Experience

Once you got your ticket at The Experience, you were directed towards the History of the Future. This was an idea that Goddard came up with to combine two distinct (and hugely necessary) aspects of Star Trek : The Experience – the need for a queue for the attraction and a desire to highlight the amazing history and mythology surrounding Star Trek lore. The idea of “artifacts” kept coming up, but they would be unusable in the attraction since it was supposed to be real, not a museum or showroom. Instead, these artifacts (which included miniatures used in the production of the shows, screen-worn costumes and prop weapons) could be moved to the pre-show and exist before the story really started. “That wasn’t in the original concept. We thought we’d use it to bring people into the Star Trek mythology,” Goddard explained. They even had an ingenious way of telling the story of Star Trek : start it in real life. “Someone had the idea of, what if we start with NASA and the space program and ease into the Federation,” Goddard said.

After getting through the queue/museum, you wound up in a small room where it looked like you were about to board a vehicle not unlike other motion-based simulators at other theme parks. (Goddard said this bit was meant to be intentionally cheesy.) At the moment when you thought you had spent your hard-earned money getting on another predictable ride, the lights would flicker and you would look around and you were on a really-for-real starship, the Enterprise-D from Star Trek: The Next Generation . If anyone has seen videos of the attraction online or experienced it yourself, you know what a dazzling effect this was. People still talk about it. And it was something that was hugely important to Goddard and his team.

“I knew if you don’t get the beam up right, the whole thing was going to be lame,” Goddard said. It was the first thing he and his team set out to work on after securing the gig to do Star Trek : The Experience – and you can tell. It’s a stunner. They contacted a NASA scientist who told the Landmark crew that your orientation is based on “peripheral vision.” That’s when they knew that they had to swap out everything to make the effect convincing.

When asked to explain how the moment was accomplished, Goddard explained: “The massive ceiling above you is moving out completely. While it’s out, other walls are moving in and when that’s done another ceiling is passing in over the top. And the top lights up and the bottom lights up. It’s tons of scenery moving very rapidly with an infrared system.” The motion generated by moving all that scenery was a kind of whoosh, created by the vacuum of air. Initially the technicians wanted to streamline the conversation and get rid of the air. Goddard said to leave it in. It really made you feel like you were being transported. Even today, he seems proud of the effect. “Everyone tried to figure out how we did it,” Goddard said.

From there, the story (written by Rene Echevarria and Ken Biler and supervised by Rick Berman) unfolded: one of you is the early descendant of Next Generation hero Picard. Commander Riker (a very game Jonathan Frakes) explains that evil Klingons are using a temporal rift to snuff out Picard’s ancestors. He tells you to get onto a shuttle with Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) and get out of the way of the temporal rift,. On the way to the shuttle, the turbo-lift is attacked and you enter freefall (accomplished using lighting and sound effects and simulated motion). The shuttle attraction (initially dubbed Voyage Through Space and later called Klingon Encounter), a simulator ride not unlike other motion-based experiences, is nifty for many reasons, including the fact that the climax of the ride film has you careening through present day Las Vegas. “When this thing had been boarded and approved, I’d pointed out to them that there was no moment where we saw the Starship in all of its glory. So we found a spot as the shuttle takes off to look back at the Enterprise ,” Goddard said. “I added that. Rick Berman thought about it for a minute and just said, ‘Yeah, he’s right, we’ve got to see the ship.’ That was one of my main contributions in that area.”

At the end of the attraction Picard (Patrick Stewart) appears and addresses the group: "While only one of you is my ancestor, each of you hold that same opportunity for the future. Guard it well." Then you are emptied into the Deep Space Nine Promenade – a retail and dining area that included Zek’s Grand Emporium, the Admiral Collection, Moogie’s Trading Post and, of course, Quark’s Bar and Grill (where you can order the ‘Cheeseborger’ or the ‘Wrap of Khan’, and enjoy an adult beverage called ‘The Final Frontier’). At the time that it opened, the Desert News commented on the variety of offerings in the various stores: “The products range from $4 magnets to $12,000 Klingon uniforms, with everything from $35 Starfleet uniforms to $20 Starfleet teddy bears to $6 pins to $2,000 custom leather jackets in between.” But the best part of this area of Star Trek : The Experience, was that various alien races and Starfleet crew members would be walking around, interacting with guests.

“We worked very hard to sell them on an immersive experience, with characters, and everyone loved the idea,” Goddard said. Dale Dye, one of Hollywood’s best known military advisors, was called in to train the employees. “When those guys meet you, they are part of Starfleet – they walk and talk and move like they are in Starfleet,” Goddard said. “Those kind of details people do not appreciate.” If you were chugging a Romulan Ale next to a garrulous Ferengi and a stone-faced Federation officer, trust us, you could tell.

When Star Trek : The Experience was finally opened in 1998 it was greeted warmly by visitors and press. The Las Vegas Review-Journal called it “The most intriguing entertainment offering this side of the Neutral Zone.” It had seemingly succeeded in its impossible mission: to drive tourists away from the strip and to the Las Vegas Hilton.

In 2004 Star Trek : The Experience received a major renovation with the addition of Borg Invasion 4D, an immersive 3D experience with a greater emphasis on thrills and an almost haunted house vibe. The new attraction took place in the Star Trek: Voyager era, complete with appearances by Kate Mulgrew, Robert Picardo and Alice Krige as the terrifying Borg Queen. Goddard wasn’t directly involved in the new attraction’s film, but offered peer review before it went into production, citing a disconnect between the script that was written (for a motion simulator-style attraction like the original Klingon Encounter) and the physical parameters of the show building, which was designed for a 3D (“4D”) movie.

“There were a few flaws in the conceptual foundation,” Goddard said. “I don’t think it ever met the expectations of either Paramount or the audience.” Two years later in 2006, a behind-the-scenes tour called Secrets Unveiled was introduced and two years after that, the fate of all of Star Trek : The Experience was in doubt.

The Final Frontier

Star Trek: The Experience

In 2008, it was announced that by the end of the year, Star Trek : The Experience would close. It’s unclear what exactly precipitated the closure, although a couple of years before, Paramount’s theme park division was sold to Cedar Fair. The timing is especially baffling when you consider that Star Trek : The Experience closed mere months before the next generation of fans would join the franchise with JJ Abrams’ Star Trek (2009 ).

A month after Star Trek : The Experience shut its doors with an honestly heart-tugging farewell done in the style of a naval decommissioning ceremony, the mayor of Las Vegas announced a new home for the experience: Neonopolis, a strip mall ironically located downtown, almost exactly where the original, full-size Enterprise was going to be built all those years before. Rohit Joshi had worked out a licensing agreement with Paramount and purchased all of the props and equipment from Star Trek : The Experience.

Goddard was actually approached about helping with the installation in Neonopolis. “We were going to help bring the whole attraction. But the reality of the attraction and the cost of it was much more than he imagined,” Goddard said. “And in the move a lot of stuff got destroyed.” By 2010 those same pieces Joshi had purchased were being quietly sold at auction. Amazingly, the logo for Star Trek : The Experience is still affixed to the outside of the Hilton. You can see the logo if you take the Las Vegas Monorail; it remains a glittery testament to the future that never was and the beloved attraction that now lives on in the hearts of countless visitors and crew members. As Picard would say of memory of visiting Star Trek : The Experience – “Guard it well."

Explore life-size bridge of Enterprise at ‘Star Trek’ convention in Vegas

What if you could explore the starship Enterprise as if you were on the set of the 1964 pilot of “Star Trek”?

Through immersive technology, now you can.

The Roddenberry Estate and OTOY Inc., a graphics company, are previewing life-sized recreations of the Enterprise at Creation Entertainment’s 56-Year Mission Las Vegas 2022 , a “Star Trek” franchise convention being held at Bally’s Hotel and Casino now through Aug. 28.

The recreation experience, called “The Cage,” gives viewers a 360-degree view of the Enterprise bridge. Viewers can even sit in Captain Christopher Pike’s chair.

OTOY also unveiled scene recreations from early “Star Trek” TV and films with Yeoman Colt and Mr. Spock, played by actors Mahé Thaissa and Lawrence Selleck.

If you’re worried about authenticity, have no fear. “The Cage” set and recreation of the Enterprise bridge were overseen by “Star Trek” cast and crew members, including “Star Trek: The Encyclopedia” authors Denis and Mike Okuda and “Star Trek” visual effects artists Doug Drexler and Daren Dochterman.

A panel featuring Rod Roddenberry, president of Roddenberry Entertainment; Jules Urbach, founder and CEO of OTOY; Denise and Mike Okuda; and Daren Dochterman discussed the work on the Roddenberry Archive from the past year on Thursday.

Roddenberry spoke about preserving his father’s legacy for future generations.

“We started archiving materials from my father’s life over a decade ago hoping to preserve not just the iconic objects that made Star Trek such a successful franchise but more importantly the personal notes, internal documents, and never seen prototypes that fueled the various iterations of Star Trek.

“With new real time and holographic technologies it is getting more and more possible to immerse new generations who didn’t experience Star Trek first-hand into my father’s universe, and we are thrilled to push forward on this new frontier in collaboration with 3D graphics pioneer, OTOY.”

Urbach explained on the panel how OTOY has worked with the Roddenberry Estate on advancing Gene Roddenberry’s vision of the future.

“Technological advances today in holographic imaging and real time graphics are making recreating his vision ever more possible and we are thrilled to work with the Roddenberry Estate to preserve Gene’s salient messages for humanity in the most authentic and open ways possible,” Urbach said.

Star Trek Mission Las Vegas 2022

star trek experience las vegas 2022

First and foremost I did have fun. Got to see Vegas, have some drinks, and hang with friends. But the whole reason I was going was to experience an official Star Trek Convention. And from what I’ve been told, “this is the biggest and best”. Well, I’d hate to see the worst, because what I was saw was just a major bummer. Usually held at the Rio, this year the con was held at the Bally’s Hotel in what was possibility the smallest convention room I’ve seen since a Palm Springs Comic Con. The floor had only three aisles of merch, it being mostly the same merch sold by different venders with subtle price changes and usually not in the good way.

Most of the floor is set up for the meet and greet of the actors from many different Trek series. Which is great! If you’re into that. A costly memorable experience for the people who want to spend the money, it ranges from 40 to 100 depending on the stature of the talent. For example, a character actor that may have done some work on one or two episodes of Trek was about 35-40. Whereas a captain of a show, your Shatners or Mulgrews, are 100-150 each. Again, if you’re into that, do your thing. Spend the money on that memory. I’m personally not that person, seeing them from afar on stage or a panel is great.

IMG 6054-2-scaled-1

Speaking of panels: they had three stages, but only was being used. The only big room I saw maybe held about 1500 people or so, only half filled with chairs. I found out that if you paid more, you could sit closer. So now they’re managing to microtransaction seats too. If I paid for a certain badge, I could sit closer to the stage and hear what was being said. Only watched a little of one panel, mostly just to sit for a bit, but they only had two speakers at the front of the auditorium. So, if you sat in the cheap seats, you could barely make out what was being said, and the videos they had playing of what was happening were such low quality you couldn’t really make out who was talking. Just more disappointment.

They had two unused stages with nothing going on until nighttime events and several rooms with just not a lot going on. The had a costumes room, which I was looking forward to seeing. They literally had five costumes, from the motion picture and OG series. Five. There are more than 700 episodes of Trek and 15 movies. Five costumes.

IMG 6052-1

There were signs everywhere for a pop-up bar based on the actor who played Scotty in the OG series called “Jimmy’s Place”.  It looked like a big deal was being made about this bar. I’m thinking replica of 10 Forward or Quarks…nope. Was just a single bar with one bartender. Looked more like he should be at a wedding and no signature drinks, and I kid you not, only one person there: one very over-heated woman dressed as a sweaty Klingon. In a room set up for more than 500 I’d assume.

There were several nighttime activates being held: comedy by Tig Notaro, a Trek Gala hosted by Robert Picardo, movie screenings, a costume contest, and wine tasting. All things you had to pre purchase months in advance and tickets were not available there due to selling out.

They had a few panels celebrating the life of Nichelle Nichols, as they should, and throughout the con were several tributes to her with inspirational quotes and memorable photos. These were a beautiful memorial to someone who meant so much to so many people. She will be missed.

IMG 6050-scaled-1

On the positive note, most of the people there were in their element and having a blast. And frankly that’s what’s it’s all about. As they say, not about the destination, it’s about the journey. I saw people in fun cosplay making jokes and complimenting each other on their creativity. The smiles on people who got to meet the actors that meant something to them was wonderful and very heartwarming, and an overall feeling of acceptance no matter who or what you are is fantastic. The Trek community is and has always been a welcoming place for all who love and need it. While my Trek Con dreams may have not been met I don’t regret a thing and will always have a place in my heart for Trek.
