11 great, free day trip attractions in  southern wisconsin  .

1. Visit the historic, sacred grounds of Lake Koshkonong Effigy Mounds , near Ft. Atkinson. A spectacular setting with a sloped view down to Lake Koshkonong. Effigy mounds were often positioned close to bodies of water as the builders were honoring the plentiful natural resources offered closeby such as fish, muskrats and wild rice. The 11 remaining mounds here were built by people living the region between 700 - 1100 A.D. Wisconsin has the highest number of effigy mounds of state in the U.S. and the World for that matter.

2. Tour the grounds of Wisconsin's First State Capitol, Belmont. On April 20, 1836 President Jackson signed a bill creating the Wisconsin Territory. Iowa, Minnesota, North and South Dakota and Wisconsin comprised of this territory governed by Henry Dodge. Find two remaining structures (the Council House, where the legislators met, and the Supreme Court House,) under the purview of the Wisconsin State Historical Society in what remains of Belmont. Belmont is located Northeast of Platteville on Hwy 151.

3. Hike Rock County's second highest point, Magnolia Bluff , for a great view of Southern Wisconsin. Located, just south of Evansville go south on Old 92 for about three miles, then west on Highway 59 1 mile, then south on N. Croak Road 0.5 miles to the park entrance.

4 Begin with a stroll along the two block, river walk and then tour historic downtown Janesville . The city of Janesville is home to more than 80 structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) spread across four historic districts.

5. Wander the historic grounds of one of America's great abolitionist institutions Milton College , Milton. Often overshadowed by the Milton House (the only standing structure of Wisconsin's role in the Underground Railroad) Milton College was established in 1844 as an academy by abolitionist, Joseph Goodrich. Notable Milton College graduates include former NFL, quarterback Dave Krieg and Hollywood actor, Kerwin Williams.

6. Travel back in time with a visit to the historic Beckman-Howe Mill , Beloit 

7 . Bird watch at the University of Wisconsin's world renowned, Arboretum , Madison. Located in the heart of the city, this 1200 acre park, is the oldest, experimental forest preserve in the world.

8. Tour an entire town listed in the National Register of Historic Places, Cooksville Ever dreamed of visiting a quaint, New England town without leaving Wisconsin? You don't need to wander far Historic Cooksville is just a quick drive from downtown Edgerton.

9 . Visit an active fish hatchery, near downtown Lake Mills

10. Hike the enchanting wilderness of Wisconsin's famous Kettle Moraine State Forest (KMSF), Southern Unit, Whitewater. At over 22,000 acres of forest, KMSF's Southern Unit is the largest natural area in our region and offers bountiful opportunities to hike, bike fish, and canoe.

11. The Wisconsin State Capitol and Monona Terrace - Two great free attractions just two blocks from each other in downtown Madison. 1st, start with the Wisconsin's State Capitol, at 284.4 feet in height the 2nd largest governmental dome in the U.S. just behind the U.S. Capitol building in Washington D.C. The existing structure is impressive built of  White Bethel Vermont Granite at 105 years old is the third structure to exist on this site the other two burned to the ground. Make sure to ask for the Capitol tour as you will be able to get outside on the building's mezzanine level affording views of both Lake Mendota, State Street, and Lake Monona.  Next, walk two blocks south on MLK Bvld. to the Monona Terrace. This building is a living breathing connection to Frank Lloyd Wright's architectural legacy in Madison and Wisconsin for that matter. Wright designed the building in 1947 but because of 5o years of political debates and stunts the convention center was not constructed until 1997. No need to visit Wright's studio in Spring Green, Taliesin at over $50/person Monona Terrace is a great free way for the whole family to get up close and personal with the architectural genius's esthetic and last major commission. The convention center terminates the street with a commanding view of Lake Monona. Don't forget to take the elevator or ramps to the rooftop terrace which affords visitors with great lake views and the Wisconsin State Capitol.

The town of Hayward is a summer destination for families throughout Wisconsin. However, in addition to the touristy downtown area there are some great hiking and kayaking areas around the area which makes a great day trip for families looking to escape to nature. In a day trip, you can hike, kayak or tube and visit downtown Hayward. Because of all these outdoor activities, it makes a great Wisconsin summer getaway.

Lake Superior

This road trip is another great option for a wilderness getaway. The real stunner of the area is the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore and the sea caves of Lake Superior. These caves are best explored via the water on a kayak or boat tour, which are plentiful in the summer. However, seeing them from the shore is great too. Additionally, a trip out to Madeline Island is amazing! This northern island has one of the best “beach bars” in the United States, Tom’s Burned Down Cafe. Don’t forget to extend your road trip all the way to Superior (the town) to visit Pattison State Park to see the largest waterfall in the state.

Lake michigan.

Spend a weekend exploring the Lake Michigan shoreline. Starting in Algoma, you can exploring one of our favorite wineries, von Stiehl. Continue on to Sheboygan, our favorite beach town in Wisconsin. In summer, we love camping on the beach here. You can even extend this vacation on to Milwaukee to explore the brews by the beach in the summer.

I was born and raised in the Midwest, Youngstown Ohio to be exact, so I know that there are so many great hidden gems in the Midwest just waiting to be discovered.

It is one of my favorite states in the Midwest not only because it’s beautiful, but also because there are just so many things to do in Wisconsin .

I’ve made sure to include some of my favorite spots and stops in a lot of these super fun Wisconsin road trips.

No matter what kind of road trip you’re interested in there’s a Wisconsin getaway perfect for you.

From scenic drives in Wisconsin to exploring Wisconsin’s major cities, I’m sure you’ll have a great time driving through Wisconsin on one of these road trips.

So, let’s take a look at 15 fun Wisconsin road trips for your bucket list!

Drive The Great River Road National Scenic Byway

• Trempealeau

Start your exploration of Wisconsin’s section of the Great River Road National Scenic Byway in Prescott.

There you can learn more about this scenic drive in Wisconsin at the Great River Road Visitor and Learning Center.

From there, continue south with a stop in the fun town of Stockholm, one of the cutest small towns in Wisconsin .

Next, you’ll stop in Alma where you’ll find a series of unique walkways thanks to the town being so closely built between the river and the steep mountain bluffs.

Your final stop is Trempealeau. The town has a charming main street, the historic Trempealeau Hotel, and it is close to the Perrot State Park and Trempealeau National Wildlife Refuge.

Explore The Big Cities Of Wisconsin Road Trip

Wisconsin isn’t just small towns and scenic drives. It’s also got some great big cities to explore.

For your starting point, you can either choose Kenosha or Milwaukee.

Both cities are pretty close to each other, but I suggest starting in Kenosha so you’d don’t have to backtrack at all.

In Kenosha, there are tons of cool museums to explore, like the Kenosha Public Museum or the Dinosaur Discovery Museum.

From Kenosha, head north along Lake Michigan and stop in Milwaukee. There are so many things to do in Milwaukee.

One of the coolest Wisconsin weekend getaways is in Milwaukee.

It is also one of the most popular Wisconsin road trip destinations because of its fun attractions like the plethora of breweries and the Harley-Davidson Museum.

Next, you’ll stop in Wisconsin’s capital city, Madison. There are so many cool things to do in Madison .

In Madison, I suggest taking in the history and learning all about Wisconsin.

Finish your Wisconsin road trips through big cities in Green Bay, home of the Green Bay Packers, where sports fans will find plenty to do. There are many other things to do in Green Bay as well!

Take The Kettle Moraine Wisconsin Scenic Drive

• Elkhart Lake
• Ice Age Visitor Center
• Scuppernong Springs Nature Trail
• Whitewater Lake

One of the best scenic drives in Wisconsin is the Kettle Moraine Scenic Route.

The route connects the Northern and Southern parts of the Kettle Moraine State Forest and crosses through 6 counties.

Start in the northern section at Elkhart Lake and enjoy the gorgeous views, especially if you are visiting the Midwest in the fall.

From there, continue south and make a stop at the Ice Age Visitor Center to learn about the glacier that helped shape the Wisconsin landscape.

As you continue south, you’ll find plenty of scenic spots, historic sites, and epic places to go hiking in Wisconsin.

I suggest taking a break and stretching your legs about halfway through at the Scuppernong Springs Nature Trail.

It’s a pretty easy 1.8-mile trail that takes you through some scenic areas of Kettle Moraine Park.

Your Kettle Moraine Scenic Route ends at Whitewater Lake, where you can hang out on the beach, go boating, or just enjoy the views on a walk.

Stroll Through The Beautiful Botanical Gardens Of Wisconsin

• Boerner Botanical Gardens
• Rotary Botanical Gardens
• Olbrich Botanical Gardens
• Bookworm Garden

On this fun Wisconsin road trip, you’ll get to see some of the state’s best botanical and themed gardens.

They are some of the most beautiful attractions in Wisconsin!

Begin your garden getaway in Wisconsin at the Boerner Botanical Gardens in Hales Corner, just outside of Milwaukee.

From there, head to Janesville to walk through the 20 acres of landscaped grounds at the Rotary Botanical Gardens.

The Rotary Botanical Gardens have several themed gardens, including a traditional English, French, and Japanese garden.

Continue north to the Olbrich Botanical Gardens in Madison. There you’ll find 16 acres of gardens as well as a 10,000-square-foot stunning conservatory to explore.

This stretch of scenic highways is only about 50 miles long, so it’s a great day trip option.

If you take this road trip in Wisconsin during the fall , you’ll see the cranberry marshes full of bright red fruits against the fall leaves of the trees, and it is gorgeous.

You’ll want to start your Cranberry Highway Wisconsin road trip in Warrens.

Warrens is ‘The Cranberry Capital of Wisconsin’ and there is a Discovery Center there that teaches you all about Wisconsin’s cranberry heritage and history.

After that, head to Pittsville to take the Splash of Red Cranberry Tours and get an in-depth look at cranberry farming.

Next, head to Rubi Reds to stock up on all the cranberry products you could ever want.

End your road trip at Glacial Lake Cranberries, which is a cranberry farm that has been continuously running since 1873.

Travel Coast To Coast On The Wisconsin Road Trips Highway 33

• Port Washington

I suggest driving across Wisconsin on Highway 33 from east to west, which means starting in Port Washington.

Port Washington, as its name suggests, is a charming port town that is full of historic buildings, Lake Michigan views, and a lively downtown district.

As you continue driving west, you’ll come to the town of West Bend.

In West Bend, there are a few unique museums you can check out, like the Museum of Wisconsin Art, the Regal Ware Museum, and the St. Agnes Historical Site.

Continuing west there are a ton of small towns you can stop in, and while you don’t have to stop in all of them, I suggest at least taking a break in Portage.

Portage has two rivers that connect the Great Lakes to the Gulf of Mexico, historic buildings, and you can also walk a portion of the National Ice Age Trail.

Your last stop as you cross Wisconsin is in La Crosse, just before the border into Minnesota.

In La Crosse, see the ‘World’s Largest Six Pack’, the Mississippi River, and explore the vibrant town.

Explore The Beautiful Waterfalls Of Wisconsin Road Trip

• Big Manitou Falls
• Lost Creek Falls
• Morgan Falls
• Copper Falls

Wisconsin is full of beautiful waterfalls, so why not make a waterfalls of Wisconsin road trip?

Your first stop should be Big Manitou Falls, the highest waterfall in Wisconsin. It drops 165 feet into the Black River and puts on quite the show.

From there, head to the natural hidden woodland waterfall outside of Cornocopia, the Lost Creek Falls.

They are not in a designated park, and the hike is a bit more difficult, but it’s worth it for the view of a piece of untouched Wisconsin woodland.

After testing out your hiking skills, try a much easier trail of about a mile to view the Morgan Falls.

Morgan Falls is a thin waterfall that trails down the side of a cliff face for about 80 feet before dropping into a tributary.

Finish your waterfalls of Wisconsin road trip at Copper Falls in Copper Falls State Park, just one of the many beautiful state parks in Wisconsin .

The state park has a few waterfalls, so pick a trail, and head out to see one of them. But if you just want to see one, I suggest at least hiking to the Copper Falls themselves.

Wisconsin’s Frank Lloyd Wright Trail

• Spring Green
• Richland Center

The famous American architect was born and raised in Wisconsin, so it’s no surprise that one of the best places to visit in Wisconsin is the Frank Lloyd Wright Trail .

The trail is spread out between five cities that each have a prominent Frank Lloyd Wright-designed building, and all of the buildings on the trail are open to the public.

So make sure to give yourself plenty of time to explore each one.

You’ll start the self-guided trail in Racine where you can admire the SC Johnson Administration Building and Research Tower as well as Wingspread, two iconic Wright buildings.

From there, make a quick stop in Milwaukee to see the Burnham American System-Built homes Wright helped design. Stop for a quick bite to eat or for dinner at one of the restaurants in Milwaukee.

Next, in Madison, you can check out the Monona Terrace Community and Convention Center as well as the First Unitarian Society building.

In Spring Green you can tour Wright’s home and studio, Taliesin, and the Wyoming Valley School.

Your last stop on this unique Wisconsin getaway is the AD German Warehouse in Richland Center.

Enjoy The Scenic Highway 42 To Door County

• Sturgeon Bay

If you want to take a scenic Wisconsin drive on the way to visiting Door County, I suggest the Highway 42 road trip.

Start in Sheboygan, the Bratwurst Capital of the World, and spend some time exploring this cute town with a unique history.

Continue driving on the beautiful twisty roads and make your next stop at Kewaunee. Kewaunee is a small town that has some beautiful views of Lake Michigan.

After enjoying the views in Kewaunee you’ll take some time to stop and explore Sturgeon Bay.

Sturgeon Bay puts you just barely in Door County, so it’s a good place to stop.

There are just so many things to do in Door County!

If you want to do the full Door County Circle Tour as well, you’ll continue past Sturgeon Bay.

But if not, after exploring Sturgeon Bay, head back to Sheboygan, or drive past Sheboygan and spend some time in Chicago.

Drive The Door County Circle Tour

• Jacksonport

There are a ton of cute towns scattered throughout the peninsula that make up Door County, and I’ve just chosen a few of my favorites.

So feel free to make even more stops along the way, but just make sure to give yourself plenty of time.

One of the towns that serve as a welcoming area for Door County is Brussels.

The charming town is known for having the largest Belgian settlement in the country and is known for its charming farms, back roads, and nods to classic Belgian architecture.

From there, head into Sturgeon Bay, which is the largest city on the Door County peninsula. Take some time to explore the visitors center and the city.

Heading around the peninsula on the Bay Side, make a stop in Egg Harbor.

It’s a popular town to explore, grab a bite to eat, at some of the restaurants in Door County , and enjoy the views from the marina and beach.

The next stop you’ll make is at Gills Rock, which is the northernmost tip of the peninsula.

Gills Rock is a quaint fishing village that offers up some serious old-world charm.

As you finish up your scenic drive in Wisconsin, you’ll come down the Lake Side of the peninsula, where you’ll make your final stop in Jacksonport.

Walk the white sandy beaches in Door County , shop for some souvenirs, or try paddling on the lake before you head home.

If you have time, there are so many things to do in Washington Island , so plan to explore that part of Door County as well.

Wisconsin Road Trips For Hiking The Best State Parks

• Devil’s Lake State Park
• Governor Dodge State Park
• Harrington Beach State Park
• Copper Falls State Park

For this getaway in Wisconsin, you’ll be traveling from southern Wisconsin all the way to northern Wisconsin exploring Wisconsin’s best state parks.

Start in southern Wisconsin at Devil’s Lake State Park, in Baraboo, just outside of the famous Wisconsin Dells .

Devil’s Lake State Park is often considered the best state park in Wisconsin, so it’s a perfect must-see starting point.

You’ll take a short drive to get to Governor Dodge State Park, which has tons of trails, two lakes to swim in, and massive sandstone bluffs.

Next, head towards Lake Michigan and spend some time relaxing on the beaches of Harrington Beach State Park.

When you’ve had your fill of sunny time spent on the sand start driving north to Copper Falls State Park.

This is the longest stretch of the road trip, so feel free to make any stops along the way.

At Copper Falls State Park, choose one of the many trails that leads to the park’s equally many waterfalls.

For your last stop, spend some time exploring Amnicon Falls State Park.

You can hike to see even more waterfalls, admire the beautiful scenery, and relax before heading home.

Not only does Wisconsin have shores on two Great Lakes, but there are also a ton of smaller lakes scattered throughout the state.

For this lakeside getaway in Wisconsin, you’ll drive from the southern area of the state near Lake Michigan all the way to the northern area of the state at Lake Superior.

Start your drive with some time spent at Racine North Beach which is on the shores of Lake Michigan.

It’s just outside of Milwaukee and is a favorite Lake Michigan beach in the area. From there, head to Geneva Lake.

Geneva Lake is a popular day trip from Chicago because it is a great lake with beautiful beaches but also a fun beachy town.

Next, spend some time at Devil’s Lake State Park and enjoy Devil’s Lake. You can boat, swim, or simply hike and walking around the lake.

As you start to head towards Lake Superior, take a break at Lake Wissota, just outside of Chippewa Falls.

It’s a calm lake that is perfect for some time spent relaxing.

The last stop on this epic road trip through Wisconsin is Meyers Beach, on Lake Superior.

Rent a kayak and explore the Meyers Beach Caves, spend the afternoon swimming, or just walk along the sandy shore.

Spend The Day In The Driftless Area Of Vernon County

• The Cashton Amish Community
• Wildcat Mountain State Park
• Kickapoo Valley Reserve State Natural Area

There are so many stops on this particular scenic drive through Wisconsin because it’s a small area and perfect for a day trip.

In total, if you check out all of these spots, you’ll only spend a little over an hour on the road. Which means you can take your time exploring each stop.

Start in Westby, which is a Norwegian community in Wisconsin that is fun to explore.

From there, take a short drive to see the Cashton Amish Community. You can find locally made Amish goods and experience a little bit of Amish culture.

After seeing the Amish, spend some time hiking at both the Wildcat Mountain State Park and Kickapoo Valley Reserve State Natural Area.

They are both super close to one another and have some beautiful landscapes and views.

Head a little west to enjoy the charming town of Hillsboro, which is the Czech Capital of Wisconsin.

Your next stops are La Farge and Viola. La Farge is a tiny village that has a great farmer’s market and apple orchard.

Viola is best known for its archeological historic site, the ancient Mound Park, and that is where you’ll end your day trip in the Driftless Area of Vernon County.

Lake Superior Highway

• Bayfield and the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

To take this Wisconsin scenic drive along Lake Superior, I suggest starting in the town of Superior.

It’s just within the border of Wisconsin, across from Duluth in Minnesota. It’s America’s most inland port and there is plenty to do and see there.

From there, head to Cornucopia, which is the northernmost town in Wisconsin and home to the Lost Creek Falls, one of the best waterfalls in Wisconsin.

Continue driving along the shore of Lake Superior and stop in the town of Bayfield.

Not only is Bayfield a super cute town to explore, but it’s also how you get to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, one of the most beautiful national parks in the Midwest.

I highly suggest taking the time to tour the 22 tiny islands, their caves, and their shores.

Your last stop along the Lake Superior Highway is Ashland, Wisconsin.

Ashland is another charming town to explore that has a great main street full of shops, restaurants, and more.

If you will be traveling, either by plane or car to the Midwest, here are some  tips on how to pack lightly.

2. Devil’s Lake State Park

Hi Paulina, great article. But a note of correction... I grew up in the Devil's Lake area and the region was not known as the "Baraboo Hills", it is the "Baraboo Bluffs" which was created by ancient glaciers.

9. Pendarvis State Historic Site

This historic site is located in Iowa County and is made up of several cabins that date back to the 19th century.

These cabins were built by the immigrants who came to mine lead in Mineral Point.

These buildings have been restored to their original state.

The Pendarvis site serves as a museum to preserve the history of early lead mining; it’s owned by the Wisconsin Historical Society.

10. Mount Horeb

Mount Horeb is a village located about 30 minutes to the west of Madison, in Dane County.

The early settlers were Norwegian and for this reason, this town bears a Scandinavian heritage.

This “Troll Capital of The World” has numerous antique shops, gift shops, and several specialty shops in the downtown area.

15. Olbrich Botanical Gardens

The 16­acre Olbrich Botanical Gardens is named after its founder, Michael Olbrich, who established it in 1952. The gardens are located in Madison and are owned by the nonprofit Olbrich Botanical Society and the City of Madison Parks.

Visit these gardens to enjoy stunning views of the surrounding landscapes and the exotic plants.

The glass-enclosed Bolz Conservatory was added to the garden in 1991. It’s filled with fragrant flowers, orchids, a waterfall, and birds.

7 Wisconsin adventures to end your summer with some thrills and shots of adrenaline

Oh jeez. Summer is starting to slip away.

The days are getting shorter, we're being barraged with back-to-school ads and we're starting to feel a little desperate, aren't we? Have we made the most of the season before it's gone?

This is the time we check our bucket lists and get moving on the things we said we'd do when March sleet was falling. Maybe that means some quiet hammock time in the backyard, and that's OK.

But for those who want to say goodbye to summer with a thrill, we've compiled some adventurous activities to get the blood flowing, endorphins pumping and still get us home to watch the sun set.

Kayak to Apostle Islands sea caves

If we had our way, everyone who lives or visits Wisconsin would be required to kayak to the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore sea caves from Meyers Beach in Bayfield County. Something about paddling into the ethereal caves carved into the red cliffs by Lake Superior, going into the earth while feeling the power of the Superior beneath you, has a primal appeal.

It can be tricky, though, kayaking on Superior, what with its unpredictable weather patterns, cold water and waves that can overcome a massive ocean-going cargo ship . You want adventure, not tragedy. The best option, especially for kayak beginners, is to take a tour through one of a handful of outfitters authorized by the National Park Service.

Swoosh down America's tallest water slide in Wisconsin Dells

Wisconsin Dells lays claim to being the "Water Park Capital of the World," with more water parks per capita than any place in the world. So it makes sense that it now is the home of what Mt. Olympus Water & Theme Park calls "America's Tallest Waterslide." It's called The Rise of Icarus, and it has a 145-foot tower with five body slides .

Just climbing a 14-story tower would be enough for most people, but then visitors shoot down the slide in about 20 seconds, reaching speeds of about 30 mph, according to a travel website, The Points Guy. Mt. Olynpus also has an indoor water park which includes Medusa's Slidewheel, billed as "America's first rotating water slide."

Tickets to the Mt. Olympus water and theme park are $45 online and $50 at the gate. For details, visit mtolympuspark.com .

Try some zip lining

If you ever wanted to experience flying through the air like a super hero, zip lining just might be for you. Northwoods Zip Line Adventure Tours , located just south of Minocqua at 7879 U.S. 51, has been giving visitors a tree-top thrills since 2014. Zip lining combines nature, height and speed for a quintessential "Yahoo!" kind of experience.

People who truly are petrified of heights might want to opt for another adventure. But for those who are simply nervous, Northwoods touts a "100% safety record" on its website, and visitors get training and start with lower and more accessible zips to begin sessions.

Northwoods offers a variety of tours, but the most popular, according to its website, is the Full Adventure Tour for $179. That includes 13 zip lines, five bridges to cross and several other elements, including climbing a cargo net and a rappelling experience. It takes three and half hours and participants are accompanied by a trained guide. Details can be found at northwoodszipline.com .

Explore Northwoods Wisconsin on an ATV or UTV

The popularity of these go-anywhere vehicles in Wisconsin has never been higher . The state Department of Natural Resources said nearly a half million of all-terrain vehicles and utility-terrain vehicles were registered in 2023, a record high. "(ATV and UTV use is) growing, big time," Ryan Serwe, a DNR off-high vehicle program specialist, told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel in May. "It's extremely popular and shows no sign of slowing down."

If you are not one of those half million people who are already all in on ATVs and UTVs, you might be wondering what it's all about. Before plunking down thousands of dollars on a machine for yourself, you might want to try it. There's no better place than in Iron County, which boasts one of the largest ATV trail systems in Wisconsin. According to the Mercer Chamber of Commerce, there are 250 miles of trails for ATV and UTV use. The chamber lists several retailers that rent the machines. It costs about $350 to rent a two-seat, side-by-side UTV for a day about $400 for a larger four-seater. Jump out of a plane with Skydive Twin Cities

Jumping out of a perfectly good airplane isn't for everyone. But for many, skydiving is a quintessential bucket-list item.

If it is on your list, Skydive Twin Cities (despite its name, it's located near Baldwin in western Wisconsin), offers a couple of ways to get your first jump in. The fastest way it to take a tandem jump, in which an instructor is tethered to a jumper all the way to the ground from 13,000 feet of altitude. This option requires only 10 minutes of instruction, and skydivers can opt to wear an altimeter, pull the ripcord and steer the parachute to the landing area, or allow the tandem master to take charge of the flight. Cost: $229 on weekdays; $249 on weekends.

Another option is to take solo skydive training. This requires taking a four-to-five hour class. Learners jump out of the plane solo, but two instructors assist the jumper by maintaining a grip on the jumper's harness for one minute of free falling after leaving the plane. Cost: $330.

Surf Lake Michigan waves

Surfing on Lake Michigan has a history in Sheboygan. Intrepid surfers with winter gear always attract attention when they go out in winter weather. But maybe warmer months make the sport a little more accessible for people who just want to learn the sport.

EOS Surf in Sheboygan has been offering surfing equipment and lessons for a quarter century. The shop offers two-hour lessons and the gear needed to learn surfing for $120 per person.

If you're looking for a sport that doesn't depend on wave conditions, maybe kite boarding is more appealing. EOS offers lessons where wanna-be kiteboarders get an off-the-water intro to the sport for $175, followed by a three-hour lesson for $300. People choosing that option also need to rent gear at discounted rates.

Go underground at Crystal Cave

Crystal Cave in Spring Valley is about a mile long, making it the state's longest. Visitors can take hour-long tours that take them more than 70 feet below ground. Guides teach tour goers about the cave's history, geology and bats. The cave tours are accessible for most people, and good for families. But the tour is "moderately strenuous," according to the Crystal Cave website, and people should be able to walk and stand for an hour, go up and down stairs and ramps and be comfortable with a few minutes of complete darkness.

Wisconsin Fall Foliage: Where To Go In Wisconsin For Fall Foliage

Is there a better autumn activity than enjoying all the amazing fall foliage in Wisconsin ? We don't think so. Generally, you can expect peak foliage throughout October, with the more northern counties peaking earliest and the southernmost counties peaking in late October and even into the first week of November. A few places in the north, like Forest and Iron Counties, may seek peak foliage as early as the last week of September. And here are a few of our favorite places to go leaf peeping in Wisconsin.

1. Door County

• Location: Door County, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: Door County is a popular destination for autumn leaf peeping, but many businesses in the area are seasonal and may have closed after Labor Day. Be sure to keep this in mind when planning your trip to the area.

Door County , is probably the best-known fall foliage destination in Wisconsin. Tucked onto the peninsula that separates Green Bay from the main part of Lake Michigan, Door County is replete with autumn attractions, including apple orchards, pumpkin farms, and wide swaths of hardwood forest that don mantles of gold, red, and orange when the weather starts to turn cooler. Expect the colors to peak between late September and mid-October in this part of the Badger State.

2. Devil's Lake State Park

• Location: Baraboo, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: Admission requires a daily permit ($8 residents/$11 out-of-state) or an annual vehicle pass ($28 residents/$38 out-of-state).

Devil's Lake State Park is the largest state park in Wisconsin, and it's also awfully popular. In warmer months, folks flock to the park for camping, water-based recreation on its eponymous lake, and rock climbing. The park's hiking and snowshoeing trails are year-round attractions, but there's something even more special about its trails when they're canopied with colorful fall foliage. Look for peak colors around the third week of October, and if you go on a weekend, plan to arrive early. The parking lots can fill up quickly.

3. Wyalusing State Park

• Location: Bagley, Wisconsin

Perched on the bluffs high above the Mississippi River, Wyalusing State Park is another wonderful spot to enjoy the splendor of the autumn season in the Badger State. With sweeping views of the river valley, whose wooded sides are festooned with fall foliage, this park is one of my favorite places to go during autumn in Wisconsin. Look for colors to peak here around the last week of October.

4. Bayfield

• Location: Bayfield, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: Bayfield is another popular destination in the autumn, so if you plan to visit on a fall weekend, be sure to book accommodations well in advance.

The charming town of Bayfield , located on the Lake Superior peninsula of the same name, is best known as the gateway to Apostle Islands National Lakeshore . As crowded as it gets in the summer, it is almost as popular in the fall when people come to the area for leaf peeping and the famous Bayfield Apple Festival . The autumn foliage is striking here, rising up the bluffs from the lake shore and scattering islands of color across the lake like paint on a palette. Expect peak foliage around the third week of October.

Best Pumpkin Patches in Wisconsin

Picking out pumpkins is a perfect autumn pastime in the Badger State. Whether it's quickly sizing up a gorgeous gourd from a roadside stand with an honor-system pay box or visiting a farm with mazes, rides, and food vendors, our state has a wide range of pumpkin picking experience to offer its people. If you're looking for suggestions, here are a handful of our favorite pumpkin patches in Wisconsin .

5. Meadowbrook Pumpkin Farm and Market

• Location: West Bend, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: Pumpkins start at $12 (includes a hayride to the patch on weekends)

Fall season at Meadowbrook Pumpkin Farm and Market is no low-key affair. Oh, you can get pumpkins there, if that's all you're looking for. But there's much more, ranging from scary nighttime cornfield adventures to a daytime petting zoo, and considerably more. 6. Schuett Farms

• Location: Mukwonago, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: Fall season begins on September 21, 2024

Schuett Farms is a wonderful pumpkin patch that tends to be a little more low key than some of its competitors. The focus is on the product: pumpkins and gourds. Hold your disappointment, though. If agritainment is what you're looking for, you'll be happy to know that Schuett Farms is home to one of the best corn mazes in Wisconsin . 7. Waldvogel's Farm

• Location: Juneau, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: The season opens on September 14, 2024. Admission charges apply for the activity area but vary depending on age and day of the week.

Waldvogel's Farm is the largest pumpkin patch in Wisconsin , and with this superlative distinction comes great responsibility. Fortunately, Waldvogel's does not disappoint. In addition to its massive selection of pumpkins, you'll find an enormous array of activities and events that last throughout the season. 8. Ebert's Greenhouse Village

• Location: Ixonia, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: Saturdays, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sundays, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., September 28 through October 27, 2024

Each year, Ebert's Greenhouse Village in Ixonia holds its annual Fall Festival on weekends from late September through the end of October. While the star of the festival is the greenhouses selection of mums, you'll also find a wonderful pumpkin patch and festivities that celebrate the autumn season in Wisconsin. Best Fall Festivals in Wisconsin

As fun as it is to pick out pumpkins, my favorite thing about fall is the festivals. Summer and spring festivals are all well and good, but they tend to be less thematic than their autumn counterparts (shoutout to the Jim Falls Sturgeon Fest!). Fall festivals also have a little bit of a "last hurrah" edge - i.e., let's get this one in before the snow flies - that make the celebrations feel more joyous and concerted. If you need some thoughts on subjects, here are a few of my favorite fall festivals in Wisconsin .

9. Oktoberfest U.S.A.

• Location: La Crosse, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: The festival takes place September 26 - 29, 2024

Every fall, La Crosse plays host to Oktoberfest U.S.A , which is the longest-running Oktoberfest celebration in the Midwest and one of the largest celebrations in the country. Folks flock to the city for a weekend of beer, music, parades, and even auto racing. Many events are free and open to the public, but a few are adults-only and/or require tickets. 10. Warrens Cranberry Festival

• Location: Warrens, Wisconsin
• Need to Know: This year's festival takes place September 27 - 29

Although often referred to as America's Dairyland, Wisconsin also happens to the nation's top cranberry-producing state - and that's worth celebrating! So every year, the town of Warrens, which is the heart of Wisconsin cranberry country, does just that with the Warrens Cranberry Festival . This event, three days of everything cranberry, is the largest of its kind in the world - and it's huge. Each year sees hundreds of art, craft, and food vendors, as well as farmer booths. But when autumn rolls around, it's one of the epicenters for apple picking in the Badger State. The season culminates with the annual Gays Mills Apple Festival , which is easily one of the biggest annual events in the region. The Milwaukee County Zoo is the largest facility of its kind in Wisconsin. The zoo stretches across 190 acres and provides a home for hundreds of animals of all varieties. A day at the zoo makes for a fabulous family outing any time of year. But three times during the fall, visiting the zoo is even sweeter, because it's free. 14. Tree Bathe in the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest

• Location: Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest
• Need to Know: There is no fee to recreate in most areas of the forest outside of campgrounds, which may charge a fee.

The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest protects large swaths of Wisconsin's Northwoods and offers trails, lakes, and scenic byways so we can get the most out of the forest during the peak of its autumn splendor. I recommend a long walk under the brightly-colored leaves, with fallen foliage crunching under foot. Where you go in the forest will largely depend on where you live - and peak foliage times will vary in different parts of the forest. 15. Pick Apples at an Orchard

• Location: A nearby apple orchard.
• Need to Know: Different apple orchards offer different experiences, and some may charge for parking and/or admission. Be sure to check before you go.

Apple picking is a popular fall pastime in the Badger State. And you can make it as low-key or adventurous as you like. Many orchards in Wisconsin will offer all sorts of activities, entertainment, and even food to their visitors. Others may offer a basket and a pay box. The latter can be a wonderful, laid-back autumn experience that you can enjoy for the price of a few hand-picked apples.

These trains have a wide variety of schedules and prices, and we think that they are some of the best places to visit in Wisconsin in the fall:

1. East Troy Railroad - East Troy

The Elegant Farmer is an incredibly popular spot to pick all kinds of fall goodies and from there, you can hop on the East Troy Railroad . Or, start at the East Troy Depot and take the train into the Elegant Farmer to make parking easier. While on your excursion, you can learn more about the Midwest’s railroad history or sit back and enjoy fine dining -- in the height of fall foliage in Wisconsin, there's nothing better!

2. Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad Bed and Breakfast - Spooner

Up in the northwest corner of the state is one of the most unique bed and breakfast experiences you could ever imagine. The Wisconsin Great Northern Railroad — also known as the Spooner Train — is the only bed and breakfast of its kind in the country. You'll ride a train overnight, see amazing scenery, have some stellar meals, and have the experience of a lifetime.

3. Minnesota Transport Museum - Osceola

4. Mid-Continent Railway Museum - North Freedom

The museum consists of static displays as well as a seven-mile round trip ride aboard preserved railroad cars. The Mid-Continent Railway Museum also offers a fall color train and a pumpkin train.

5. Riverside and Great Northern Railway - Wisconsin Dells

These folks have a 15-gauge light railway that runs throughout weekends in October. This is a decidedly family-friendly train ride in Wisconsin , as kids aged 12 and under will receive a free pumpkin or gourd to take home with the cost of admission. Talk about a fall blast!

6. Little Amerricka - Marshall

This vintage amusement park offers an awesome fall experience before it shuts down for the season. During the month of October, visitors of all ages can hop aboard the pumpkin train and fall even more in love with autumn. For riders two and up, any pumpkin that can be carried is included in the admission price.

7. The National Railroad Museum - Green Bay

This Wisconsin railroad museum is an awesome stop no matter the time of year, but in fall you get to ride a pumpkin train rain or shine and head out to a pumpkin patch. There will be indoor live entertainment, crafts, and games for children of all ages, plus the train ride and a pumpkin to take home.

If you want to make summertime even better, think big. In the Wisconsin Dells , a waterpark recently opened a new Wisconsin waterslide that’s almost too big to be true. Mt. Olympus Theme Park & Resort is now home to the Rise of Icarus Tower. It’s an attraction that now claims to be the biggest in the country. How big is that? Read on to find out.

Mt. Olympus is a water and theme park located in the Wisconsin Dells.

Inspired by ancient Greece, the park features numerous references to Greek mythology and is named after Mount Olympus, the home of the gods.

The resort, managed by a Greek-American family, has a history that dates back several decades.

Originally launched as Big Chief Karts and Coasters, it was rebranded as Big Chief's Mt. Olympus Theme Park in 2004. Since then, the park has undergone significant growth and transformation, now sprawling across an extensive area.

Mt. Olympus is celebrated for its extraordinary outdoor attractions, including a variety of exhilarating roller coasters.

In the summer of 2022, the waterpark introduced a unique addition to its lineup: Medusa’s Slidewheel. This innovative ride is the first rotating waterslide in the United States and is part of a new indoor waterpark complex. But the park's evolution didn’t stop there.

The park recently opened the Rise of Icarus Tower.

It is now the biggest attraction at the park, featuring five wet and wild body slides.

But that’s not all. The largest slide is a whopping 145 feet high - the tallest in the country!
