“Hi, I’m Gina! When I started my journey in the travel industry 25 years ago, there weren’t many opportunities for a formal travel agent education – one that helped me understand the basics of travel or the ins-and-outs of being an entrepreneur.

For the last 10 years, I have worked with agency owners, helping them determine what success looks like for their agency, as well as helping them set goals and chart their course for success (and what a joy it has been, watching others succeed)!”

Kudos to Katie!! Katie Alonzo has been VERY accommodating in the initial booking and now our twice rebooked Regent Cruise (Covid). She also assisted us in modifying a Viking Cruise which I had booked before I began using her services as a courtesy. I am very particular in regards to my cruise requests and have found her to be both knowledgeable and informative, researching numerous cruises to assist me in choosing the Cruise Line and Cruise Ship that would best meet my expectations. Thank you Katie and Avoya Travel for being such a pleasure to work with.

Run from Avoya. DO Not engage their services. My travel agent lied about the perks he could provide 8f I transferred my cruise to Avoya, then ghosted me after I arrived on the cruise and reached out to him! Avoya corporate was no help either..saying they would look into the matter with zero follow up after several inquiries.

Well, I finally got in touch with Steve Hirshan of Avoya Travel. He told me the reason I was let go was the accounting department tried to run my debit card for the third time for my monthly charges of April. His accounting lady Vanessa told him it didn't go through. I called my bank. There wasn't any declined charges using my debit card from Avoya. I even sent screenshots of my bank account balance for the first half of May. the first two times that they did run it it was declined. I was trying to set up my business account, etc. but my fault I agree. The third time is not, even after verifying with my bank. Here is what he responded with From his last email. I responded as well with no response. I can't believe a large company would not even go one step further to check if it was a mistake. Apparently, from the information I have gathered from my bank. It is a mistake and they aren't going to own up to it. Way to run a business Avoya!!! I wouldn't have given given it one star, but that was my only choice

Response

I was with Avoya over 1.5 years. I tried logging into Avoya connect and system said no account associated with Kim Goree! Today, May 11, 2024, I called *67 the call, reached call center, spoke with Christina and asked for myself. She stated "she is no longer with us, she departed May 7th". What?! I hung up and called again, reached a lead person over the call center and all he could kept saying, "I can give you customer care email, I can give you customer care email". I said why, I've reached out to them a number of times with no response and called help desk with no response! I've currently got 3 cruises booked, haven't received my commission and 3 more cabins booked for next year that are clients I got on my own that I will nott get paid for! What a shitty company, fire you and don't even call, email or mail a letter to tell you why?! Shitty company, they're a joke! I'm laughing all the way to another agency!

Photo of Barry E.

I thought about using them and went to their site.Their site was so filled with other pop up adds that I was concerned I would wonder to some other site that I shouldn't. I got right out and probably wouldn't go back.

Photo of Andre J.

Had a horrible experience with Avoya travel. We booked airline tickets for our cruise via one of Avoya's independent travel agent. Short story the names on the tickets were missed spelled and was charged for an additional ticket. After 6 months still no refund and Avoya states they can't help because they don't handle any money. So bottom line Avoya takes your credit card information from the independent travel agent. Books the tickets and washes their hands of the situation. Now the Airline claims they refunded the money to Avoya and refuses to help. Don't trust they find a travel agent that books directly.

Photo of Steve N.

Avoid them. They called me to try and plan my train trip. They had ZERO information on the trip, could not give me times, prices, NOTHING. The agent said, "I would have to look up the prices." She sounded like she didn't want to do it. when I told her that yes I need the pricing, she sounded irritated and said she'll get back to me. Not expecting a call back from them ever, and if by some miracle they actually follow through on doing what they said they'd do, I wouldn't use them anyway.

Photo of Dennis L.

allen was horrible never rteturned my calls give him a zero if i could trip was great with helr from virgin

Photo of Zeke W.

Agent Cheryl was incredibly rude over the phone. Totally unprofessional, will be looking elsewhere.

Photo of Karen C.

Misrepresentation of their role on an inquiry for actor cruise to Europe. When we decided to deal direct with river cruise company the travel agent sent two nasty emails. This is a second time having a horrible experience with Avoya. Buyer beware and when booking go direct to company. Agents we dealt with are lliers and totally incompetent!

Photo of Sunny B.

This agency is incompetent, deceitful, irresponsible, inconsiderate and uses liars to garner your business. We had been rooked after booking a vacation at a so-called 4 star resort, which was actually a dump with no water and wasn't worth 1 star! A refund was promised but never delivered! Not even a partial refund for days we did not stay! Lied to us and told us to be patient while biding their time and doing nothing! Despicable people! A nightmare! Stay away from these thieves at this so-called agency!

I've been a proud member of Avoya Travel Network for 10 months, and it's been a game-changer for my travel business. Their support system is exceptional, from their knowledgeable staff to their cutting-edge technology. The resources they provide, including training, marketing materials, and industry insights, have been instrumental in growing my client base and offering unforgettable travel experiences.

Avoya’s Early Success program was crucial to my initial success. Their ongoing support is invaluable, especially from the Brand Sales Team who are always available to answer questions and provide guidance. The virtual and live events hosted by the events team are both informative and enjoyable.

One thing I particularly appreciate is Avoya's unwavering commitment to their agents' success. They've always been there to offer guidance, answer questions, and celebrate our achievements. I couldn't imagine partnering with any other host agency. Highly recommended!

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you so much for your feedback. We're glad you're a part of the Avoya family! We're so proud of you.

Best regards, Avoya Travel

I have been with Avoya for approximately 8 plus months and feel it was the best decision I could have made to start my new travel agency! They offer so much training, coaching to help you grow your company and the opportunity to take leads with them directly or build your personal clientele. The booking platform is easy to use! prior to making the decision to choose Avoya I researched many other host agencies. I nailed it with my choice! I 100% recommend Avoya if you are considering opening your travel agent!

We couldn't be more proud of you and your success. Keep up the great work!

I joined this incredible industry - working part time - almost a year ago. I probably wouldn't be here without the support of my host agency. Huge shout to the Avoya Travel Academy for the exceptional education and to the Network Enrichment Team, for teaching us everything about our booking engine. I received outstanding assistance from the Early Success Team and my development coach. Walking me through the first steps of owning a travel business and helping me find what I really want to represent and achieve. Next, I must mention the stellar Brand Sales Team, they are always there for us to help find the best promotions, assist in quoting and the list goes on. I am so grateful for Avoya's Event Team for organizing many amazing annual events, and my favorite: destination days. We have a chance to get to know different suppliers in depth and have one-on-one time with them. I can't list every department separately, but I am truly grateful I chose Avoya. Without a doubt, the best decision I made and I am looking forward to seeing my business growing and becoming more and more successful with each day!

Best regards, The Avoya Travel Network

Experience: 1-5 years

For nearly 9 months, I've had the pleasure of being part of the Avoya Travel as an Independent Agency, and I'm thrilled with the exceptional training and support they offer. It's been a journey that started 4 years ago when I began my career as a travel advisor, and now, I've found a host agency in Avoya Travel that feels like a true partnership.

We love watching you achieve your goals. Keep up the great work! Best regards, Avoya Travel

Sales: > $1 million

I cannot thank or praise the Avoya Network enough. I am new to sales and to the travel industry. Thanks to their incredible training, support, software system and leads program I have not only met but exceeded my wildest expectations.

The Early Success Program supported me through my learning process, helped me to develop processes and guided me through implementation. Having access to weekly zoom meeting with the leaders of the program and a personal coach made me feel supported and that they had my best interest in mind. Best of all, this is all free of charge. Have you priced sales coaching?

The live leads are nonstop. These are quality real time leads that have allowed me to build a base of business and has led to return customers.

The incredible software makes tracking sales, leads, important dates and more easier and more seamless. No need for separate accounting software.

I have been in the program for less than a year and have in excess of $1,000,000 in sales all through live leads.

If you are looking for a host agency Avoya is the only way to go.

Thank you so much for your feedback. We're glad you're a part of the Avoya family! We're so proud of you. Best regards, Avoya Travel

I left Avoya after 6 months due to disagreement with their commission structure for leads and their marketing philosophy. I have been in sales my whole career - and this is the only company I know where the customer cannot choose who they work with.

As a new TA, I was enticed by the training and onboarding program, and the opportunity to get leads with Avoya. However, after I earned $80 on a $5000 cruise I realized their model is flawed. Basically, you earn 4.8% on most cruise leads - it is a 30-70 split on leads, with 30% to you....after deducting any offers you made to the client.

They want you to sell on value, but in training the first thing they push is to offer a discount or onboard credit. What they don't tell you is that any OBC you offer is deducted from your commission at the 80/20 or 30/70 lead split. Teaching you to offer a discount on your iniital call with a client is not adding value, and cuts your pay.

Avoya spends a lot of marketing, and they want to protect their investment - but the reason the leads stay with Avoya is because of the TA and how we bring the lead to closure, and maintain the customer relationship. However, they still keep the 30-70 split on all future deals as well.Even though they were only responsible for the initial lead.

And then we received a letter from their CEO that said they would sue any TA that left and worked with a client that was previously a lead. Meaning the customers you had fostered and nurtured were not allowed to leave Avoya and follow you. Never in my career had I ever seen a policy like this - while I should not be allowed to poach any leads if I left, a customer should be able to use me if they wanted to, and found me on their own. Avoya threatened all agents with lawsuits should a client follow us no matter what. That is not a company I wanted to be associated with.

I left and am very happy with my new agency I am associated with.

Thank you for your feedback. We take all reviews and feedback very seriously in our efforts to continually improve the Avoya Travel Network™. Every Independent Agency in the Avoya Network signs an agreement with Avoya Travel regarding customer ownership. We live up to our commitment in this agreement and we expect every agency who signs the agreement to do the same. Avoya clients stay with Avoya for many reasons including the exclusive deals we offer and the great products we sell. We are glad to hear that you are happy with your new business relationship and wish you the best! Best regards, Avoya Travel

Experience: > 11 years

I have been affiliated with Avoya Travel for more than 10+ years. They are absolutely the best. My sales have increased from $250,000 year one to well over a million $+ each year. They have the most innovative team of specialists whose sole purpose is to help the travel agent thrive. Lots of education, training webinars, team support, everything needed to become successful in this industry. Thanks, Avoya Travel for being the best!

Hi Brandon,

Thank you so much for your feedback. We're glad you're a part of the Avoya family! We're so proud of you. Best regards, The Avoya Travel Network

I started off in the travel industry working with another host agency that I was not happy with and one of my friends who's also a travel agent kept telling me to give Avoya a try. I'm so glad that I gave them a try and I'm happy to still have my travel agency business affiliated with them a year later. The support that I get from Avoya especially the Early Success Team and Brand Sales Departments is extremely wonderful. I will admit when I first joined Avoya I was struggling but that's because I didn't reach out for help and once I contacted Early Success at Avoya asking them for help I went from struggling to now ending every month with at least over $2,000 commission wise. The Early Success Team is a wonderful asset that I'm very glad that Avoya has for free where as with most other host agencies they charge you for a coaching session. Avoya has opportunities where you can meet with the senior leadership team in person. Avoya even invited me to attend the naming ceremony for Royal Caribbean Icon of the Seas where I got to meet so many of Avoya Senior Leadership Team in person and I even got to talk to Avoya CSO Phil Cappelli for a bit during the 3-day naming ceremony cruise to the Bahamas. The live leads program with Avoya is amazing not only are my customers from the live leads program but some of them are also referrals that I got from the leads that I claimed threw Avoya live leads program. Avoya has a long standing relationship with so many suppliers and whenever I have a question or a issue I know that Avoya support team is there to help me. I love how Avoya also has training/educational opportunities that are offered via Zoom. A lot of Avoya staff use to be IA's with Avoya so a lot of them talk from experience. Overall I'm very happy with my affiliation with Avoya and I should of went with Avoya in the first place. Now I'm actually getting ready to add agents under my license and expand my business. I also love how Avoya Early Success Department makes sure that I have goals set for myself and how they cheer me on and celebrate whenever I hit a goal.

Hi Michael, We couldn't be more proud of you and your success. Keep up the great work! Best regards, The Avoya Travel Network

Sales: < $149,999

I was with a previous host company for 2 years but I wanted more; therefore, I began a long search for a company to give me a little more knowledge that I was missing. When I found and joined Avoya it was MORE than I expected! The coaching and available materials is a bit overwhelming (because they have so much available)! I am very proud to be with Avoya and ALL the teams that is there to help is AWESOME!

Hi Verna, Thank you so much for your feedback. We're glad you're a part of the Avoya family! We're so proud of you. Best regards, The Avoya Travel Network

I am totally new to the travel business and feel so lucky that my research led me to Avoya. Now that I have been with them for just under a year and have more knowledge about the industry, I can say that they are a great host agency! The Avoya University program to become a travel agent was excellent. After completing the program and taking the TAP test, they provide extensive training on using the Agent Power system for booking and managing travel. And, finally, being put into the Early Success program where they continue to guide and support my independent agency as I learn the business. I have had my personal ups and downs as I have navigated this new industry and the Avoya team has been rock solid and supportive to help me find success. I highly recommend Avoya!

Hi Stephanie, We are so happy that you're enjoying all of the resources Avoya has to offer. It has been a pleasure watching you learn and grow this year. We are so excited to see what you achieve next! Best regards, The Avoya Travel Network

15 Top-Rated Tourist Attractions & Things to Do in Moscow

Written by Diana Bocco Updated Dec 23, 2023

Moscow is one of Europe's most enigmatic destinations, home to a fascinating history and colorful, awe-inspiring architecture you won't find anywhere else in the world. Moscow might be one of the most populous cities in the world with over 11 million inhabitants, but this hasn't changed its strong cultural and social traditions.

Walk the cobblestone streets of the Red Square or the banks of the Moskva River early in the morning, and it's hard to tell what century you're in.

Tsarist architecture, must-see churches, and glamorous shopping opportunities blend together for a visual experience you won't forget. For ideas on what to see and do while visiting Russia, here's our list of top tourist attractions in Moscow.

Marvel at the Size of the Kremlin

Catch a performance at the bolshoi theatre, shop at the luxurious gum, make your way into lenin's mausoleum, spend an hour (or three) at red square, discover history at the museum of cosmonautics, ride the stunning moscow metro, explore the moscow state integrated museum-reserve, spend a rainy day at the tretyakov gallery, walk up and down arbat street, stop by the vdnkh all-russian exhibition centre, wander around gorky park, map of tourist attractions & things to do in moscow.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.
