EagleEyes Technology

EagleEyes is for individuals who have little to no muscular control but have control of their eye movement. Some of the diagnosis in this category are Rett Syndrome, Spinal Muscular Atrophy and severe Cerebral Palsy, Trisomy and Hydranencephaly.

EagleEyes is an innovative technology developed at Boston College that acts as a mouse replacement system that enables communication and learning primarily for individuals who have congenital severe special needs. These individuals are most often non-verbal, paralyzed, and at most have a "Yes/No" method of communicating with those around them. Generally EagleEyes is used with individuals whose only controlled muscular movement is their eyes .

EagleEyes is used for cause and effect,recreation, communication and education, helping to reveal a user's true intelligence, focus and eye strength training, and learning to use the eyes for communicating. 

What is EagleEyes?

EagleEyes is a general mouse replacement that is based on measuring a user's EOG or electro-oculographic potential. The EOG is a small electrical potential which indicates the position of the eye relative to the head. Surface electrodes are placed on the user's head, above and below one eye, and on each side of the head to the left and right of the  eyes . The five electrodes are connected to a USB powered electrophysiological amplifier which is connected to a computer. A program in the computer translates the signals received from the electrodes into the position of the mouse pointer on the screen. When the user moves his or her eyes , the mouse pointer follows the movement of the eyes . 

Because the electrodes are attached to the users face, they can use  EagleEyes in any position that they are comfortable. A combination of eye and head movement can be used to move the mouse cursor so the user does not have to be perfectly still to use EagleEyes .

EagleEyes allows the user to play games, discover new things and ultimately progress towards meaningful communication. EagleEyes can be the first step towards developing the skill set necessary to access other technology.

Admitted Students Day?

I planned to visit Boston College with my parents on April 9th, because I want to attend a 3 day overnight program at another school of interest 22nd-24th (overlaps with the BC’s 2nd admitted students day on the 23rd). I tried registering for the April 9th session, but the screen refreshed and the only option left was the 23rd. Do you think my parents and I can still attend without registering? Do they check in families etc? I’m wondering if the registration is for head count for they’ll have name tags etc. We would like to visit during the Sunday open houses and the only option is the 9th, and not attend an Admitted Eagle Eye sessions which take place during the week. Thanks.

Correct me if I’m wrong - because I could very well be, but isn’t the 9th date through invite only? I remember calling last weekend and Paul Bonitto (one of the people involved) and he told me that this weekend is specifically for OTE students and those invited. Again, I could of heard wrong but as far as I know the space was limited and only certain people were invited.

@yodiemagical What is OTE? I just found the aditted eagle day website through google and it let me sign up for the April 9th date lol. Maybe it does not show up for OP anymore because its filled. I registered for it before RD decisions came out(accepted EA), and especially with only about 10 days left, its probably booked.

Edit: I went on the admitted eagly day website and it says the April 9th date is at capacity. There is a waiting list though that you can join.

@penngirlpending My son did the Admitted Eagle day during the week. They did check in the students. They also listed the students names on a welcome notice that was at the front desk. Admitted Eagle day events are much smaller (10 students) and they assigned the students to a host vs the 750 students they are expecting for the Sunday programs. I doubt they will turn you away if you show up but I would factor in how far of a distance it is for you to travel there.

@paveyourpath Is this called something different? The admitted eagle day webpage showed only the two Sunday dates that have 750 people. Was your event an eagle for a day or something else?

These programs are capped at 750 students, and the April 9th date is full. That’s why it’s not available, but you can always put yourself on the waitlist for then just in case any spots open!!

@HSStudent938 I don’t remember exactly what it is called but when we registered, we could choose from the Sunday dates but it said if you could not come on one of those Sundays to consider one of the weekday events. I believe they are called Admitted Eagle Days? These are now limited only to admitted students so they can accommodate students during the week. It also said if you couldn’t come to campus to consider attending one of the local events in your area and have the map where you can look up to see if there is a local event in your area.

Admitted Eagle Days are the day-long events on April 9 and 23, capped at 850 registered students. The April 9 Admitted Eagle Day is at capacity; generally, a number of students tell us they will no longer be attending mid-week, which is when we utilize the waiting list. Candidly, we will not turn anyone away who is unregistered, but we must set a cap to avoid overcrowded sessions across the board.

Admitted Eagle Eye Sessions are held on Tuesdays and Thursdays in April. They are an hour-long info session geared specifically toward Admitted students, followed by a campus tour.

Eagle for a Day is an opportunity to shadow a current student for four hours – attending class, seeing their dorm, going to lunch, etc. This is exclusive to Admitted students during April.

@HSStudent938 OTE is basically for high needs kids and get a grant that basically covers their tuition all four years. Like I said, I’m just repeating what I was told lol but I did look into it as well (the weekend) and there are over 700 kids going already…at least those who have rsvpd and now there is a waiting list. I just got an email from them, basically telling me I have to confirm my flight information by tomorrow or else my spot will be given away to one of the students on the waitinglist lol

How to Plan a Successful Campus Tour of Boston’s Top Colleges

Each year, we partner with schools and community organizations around Massachusetts to plan campus tours for their students. They receive quality transportation, professional drivers, and attentive customer service.

This year, we’ve gone one step further to make your trip run even smoother. We talked to five of Boston ’s top colleges to learn everything there is to know about group tours on their campuses.

Boston University

Overlooking the Charles River, Boston University’s campus is home to nearly 18,000 students. With a student to faculty ratio of 10-to-1, the school offers students a highly-personalized education.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in-person on-campus tours are suspended. For future reference, the university welcomes groups of 10 to 50 students to schedule a tour by filling out their request form or by calling admissions at 617-353-2300 . Group tours are conducted by a current BU student and are available for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors only. Schedule your visit at least three weeks in advance to ensure availability.

Your bus driver can drop students off outside the visitor’s center at 233 Bay State Road. Though the university doesn’t have guest bus parking on campus, your driver can park off-campus and meet you back at the visitor center at the end of the tour.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology

Visit the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge to learn about its prestigious academic programs, admissions process, and campus life. Students who are interested in science, engineering, and research will especially benefit from visiting their campus.

On-campus tours are suspended due to the global pandemic, but you can plan and schedule a self-guided tour for your group. For future reference, when you book a visit, your students will receive a 75-minute tour which includes the Stratton Student Center, Zesiger Athletic Center, and Kresge Auditorium.

MIT will waive the tour fees it’s booked by a teacher or school counselor. There are specific times of the year when campus visits can not be accommodated, so read their guidelines carefully before requesting a date.

At 84 Massachusetts Avenue, your driver can safely let students off the bus. When you partner with a company like GOGO Charters , you won’t have to worry about finding parking. We’ll ensure that your driver knows where to park so that you can focus on your upcoming trip.

Harvard University

Harvard is one of the top Ivy League schools in the country and typically has tours available for groups from 15 to 100 participants. However, due to the global pandemic, all public and private campus tours are suspended.

For future reference, you can schedule a tour in advance through the Harvard University Visitor Center. Once you arrive in Cambridge, ask your driver to drop students off at Mt. Auburn Street between Holyoke Street and Plympton Street. Tours begin at the Harvard Information Center and are led by current students.

Your guide will use their personal experience at Harvard to teach students what to expect. They’ll also be available to answer questions about housing, admissions, financial aid, extracurricular activities, and more.

Northeastern University

Students who attend Northeastern University have a unique opportunity to learn from real-world experiences. Over 90% of undergraduates complete co-op programs during their four years at the university.

High school and college transfer students can book group tours through the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Request a tour at least two weeks in advance, and contact the school if your group has over 40 participants.

The tour begins at the Visitor’s Center at 40 Leon Street, and your driver can drop students off on Forsyth Street near Ruggles Station.

Boston College

Groups of 10 or more participants can tour Boston College’s campus to see its beautiful Gothic architecture and learn more about the school. Schedule your tour two weeks ahead of time on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.

The Eagle Eye Campus Visit, which lasts two hours, includes an information session and campus tour. A current student will show participants around the school and answer any questions they may have.

The school’s staff suggests that buses unload on their lower campus, which is a short walk from their office at 140 Commonwealth Avenue. Your driver may park at Boston College’s Newton campus a mile away and return for pickup after the tour.

Our Proposed Five-Day, Jam-Packed Campus Visit, Itinerary

Now that you know a bit about the colleges and some campus offerings, we have prepared a proposed agenda if you want to make the most of a five-day trip. Please note that this condensed itinerary allows for brief visits to each college, so checking the tour schedules, booking accommodations in advance, and being prepared for a busy schedule is essential. If you have specific colleges you prioritize, consider adjusting the itinerary accordingly.

Day 1: Arrival in Boston

• Arrive at Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).
• Check-in to your accommodation near Tufts University.
• Evening: Explore the local area around Tufts and have dinner.

Day 2: Tufts University & Babson College

• Morning: Take a campus tour of Tufts.
• Early Afternoon: Check out of your Tufts accommodation.
• Travel by car to Babson College (Wellesley, MA).
• Afternoon: Take a campus tour of Babson College.
• Evening: Explore the Wellesley area and have dinner.

Day 3: Brandeis University & Boston University

• Morning: Check out of your Babson accommodation.
• Travel by car to Brandeis University (Waltham, MA).
• Early Afternoon: Take a campus tour of Brandeis University.
• Afternoon: Travel by car to Boston University (Boston, MA).
• Evening: Take a campus tour of Boston University, explore the BU area, dine, and consider visiting Fenway Park.

Day 4: Boston College & Northeastern University

• Morning: Check out of your Boston University accommodation.
• Travel by car to Boston College (Chestnut Hill, MA).
• Early Afternoon: Take a campus tour of Boston College.
• Afternoon: Travel by car or public transportation to Northeastern University (Boston, MA).
• Evening: Take a campus tour of Northeastern University, explore the nearby area, and enjoy dinner.

Day 5: Emerson College & Departure

• Morning: Check out of your Northeastern accommodation.
• Travel to Emerson College (located in downtown Boston).
• Early Afternoon: Take a campus tour of Emerson College.
• Afternoon/Evening: Explore the downtown area, have a final meal in the city, and then depart from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS).

City’s Early College Program Celebrates Fourth Cohort of High Schoolers Incentivized to Earn College Credit

The Summer Learn and Earn (SLE) program , led by the Office of Workforce Development , provides a transformative opportunity for Boston’s rising high school juniors and seniors. Created in 2020, this innovative program incentivizes teens to take college-level courses. According to a recent report from the Rennie Center on the growth of Early College in MA: “students in Early College programs also gain confidence, habits, and skills needed for sustained post-secondary and life success.” Edmunds et al, 2017   Importantly, students who enroll in SLE do not have to choose between a summer job and a learning opportunity because they receive a stipend.  

This summer, 120 motivated young people participated in the program. The students earned a stipend of $250 a week for seven weeks, with a bonus of an extra $250 for those with perfect attendance, and 3-4 college credits at one of three partner colleges: Roxbury Community College , Franklin Cummings Tech , and Emmanuel College . Students choose from six college courses, Introduction to Business (two sections), Introduction to Marketing, Web Design, Professional Communications, and Crime and Justice.

SLE is more than just an educational opportunity: it is a stepping stone for Boston's youth to explore their potential, gain invaluable experience and contacts, and prepare for the world ahead. The program has a comprehensive curriculum designed to ensure that students begin preparing for both college and their future careers. Going beyond classroom learning, the curriculum includes:

• Academic Coaching : Each college course is paired with an Academic Coach who supports student learning and advocates for their needs throughout the seven-week program. This personalized guidance helps students to navigate their academic challenges and thrive in their studies.
• College Readiness : The students engaged in various college readiness and planning activities that exposed them to life at a higher education institution, including campus tours, financial aid information sessions, and an overview of the college selection and application process.
• Career Readiness : Students also received career-focused training to prepare them for the workforce, including resume writing workshops, and helped them identify their strengths and career aspirations.

This holistic approach ensures that students are not only academically prepared but also equipped with the tools and confidence to succeed beyond high school. 

The program concluded on Wednesday, August 21, 2024, with a celebration ceremony at Emmanuel College’s Wilkens Science Center. Students from each class presented to their peers on what they had learned over the summer and were awarded certificates of completion to commemorate their successfully earning college credits. As we reflect on the program’s success this summer, we are excited to see how these young minds will shape their paths in the years to come.
