Gangtok – A Complete Travel Guide and Itinerary

When thinking about a trip to the mountains, most of the people in India will consider either Himachal, Uttarakhand or Kashmir. A major part of the Himalayas that often gets overlooked is the beautiful North-Eastern part of India. Though tourism here is actually on the rise, not a lot of people visit. States like Assam and Sikkim do get a fair share of tourists but only a handful of people would consider visiting Arunachal, Nagaland, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, and Tripura. While I will be covering these lesser-visited states in another article, in this particular post I want to talk about the beautiful town of Gangtok, the capital city of Sikkim.

Sikkim may be a small state in size but is a giant when it comes to natural beauty and cultural diversity. Nestling in the Himalayan Mountains, it is home to the summit of Kangchenjunga, the world’s third-highest peak. Almost the entire state is a mountainous terrain with an elevation ranging from 280 meters (920 ft) to 8,586 meters (28,169 ft) in northern peaks near Nepal and Tibet.

Other than this, the state has over 80 glaciers, 28 mountain peaks, 5 major hot water springs, over 100 rivers and streams, 227 high altitude lakes, and 8 high mountain passes. So yes, a trip here is a dream come true for all kinds of tourists including families, bikers, trekkers and adventure seekers.

Quick Navigation

Gangtok is the capital and the largest town of Sikkim. At an elevation of 1,650 meters (5,410 ft), it is the center of Sikkim’s tourism industry. It was once an important transit point for traders traveling between India and Tibet. Descending the hillside in steep tiers and providing a spectacular view of the Khangchendzonga, Gangtok acts as a perfect base for tourists traveling to various other parts of Sikkim.

Though now a busy administrative and business center, the town has not still lost its charm. Apart from stunning natural beauty consisting of plunging green valleys, water streams, and enchanting landscapes, Gangtok also has an interesting and cheerful mix of cultures and communities. There are several places in and around Gangtok that can keep its visitors busy for days altogether. What those places are and how you can plan a trip to Gangtok is what we will be discussing further in this article.

How to reach Gangtok

Gangtok is a very well connected town and getting here is not going to be a problem at all. Depending on your own preference, you can either drive here by your own vehicle or arrive by either a train or flight.

How to reach Gangtok by Air

The nearest airport to Gangtok is the Pakyong Airport, located in Pakyong town, about 35 kilometers from Gangtok. It is a newly built airport that was recently inaugurated in September 2018. It is one of the five highest airports in India. From the airport, you can get a taxi from the prepaid counter for a drop to Gangtok town.

Other than Pakyong, the next nearest airport is in Bagdogra which is about 4 hours drive from Gangtok. Once you land at Bagdogra, you can rent a taxi for 2000 – 4000 for a drop to Gangtok, depending on the type of taxi you chose.

How to reach Gangtok by Train

The nearest train station to Gangtok is the New Jalpaiguri Junction railway station in Siliguri. It is a major railway station and all trains between Guwahati to rest of the country pass through here. You can easily find a train to New Jalpaiguri from almost every major city in India. Gangtok is about 125 kilometers from New Jalpaiguri and it takes about 3-4 hours to complete the journey.

How to reach Gangtok from Siliguri

Once you reach Jalpaiguri by train, you can find taxis from the railway station itself, for Gangtok that will charge you about Rs. 3000 for a drop.

Another cost-effective way would be to board a train from the railway station for the Siliguri bus stand. There are several buses available from Siliguri for Gangtok operated by Sikkim National Transport. All the buses start in the first half of the day though. The last bus leaves at around 12 noon and reaches Gangtok between 4 to 5 PM. Fare per person is Rs. 200 and you can buy a ticket on the spot from the ticket counter.

Shared taxis too can easily be found heading towards Sikkim from the railway station itself. A shared cab will cost between Rs. 200 – 300 per person. The driver may quote you a high amount initially and you will have to bargain it down.

How to reach Gangtok by Road

If you were traveling by your own vehicle, then you can easily drive to Gangtok by NH 10 which lnks Gangtok to Siliguri. Please note though that the condition of the roads around Gangtok is not that great. From Siliguri, you will reach Kalimpong and then continue driving to Gangtok.

Local Transport in Gangtok

The main Sikkim Nationalised Transport bus stand is near M.G. Road. There is another bus stand near Deorali Bazaar. From both these stands, you can get daily state transport buses nearby towns like Siliguri, Kalimpong and other local areas. The frequency of these buses is however not that great and the local taxis are a more commonly used mode of local transport.

For Tashiding, Yuksom and Pelling, buses depart from 07:00 and 12:30 from SNT bus stop. Hourly services are also available for some places like Jorethang, Namchi, Ravangla and Geyzing.

Private and Shared Taxis

Taxis, both private and shared, are the most common way of commuting in and around Gangtok. Depending on your own preference and budget, you can either book one taxi for the entire tour or use shared cabs for visiting particular spots.

One thing you must know is that commercial taxis from other states are not allowed in Gangtok. Deorali Taxi Stand, also known as Mainline Taxi Stand, is where a taxi from any other state will drop you at. From here, you will have to rent a local taxi to take you to your destination or to show you around. This taxi stand is located near Deorali Bazaar.

Vajra Taxi stand near Vajra Cinema Hall is where you can get a cab for local sightseeing. Another taxi stand is near M.G. Road. For visiting places like Tashi viewpoint, you can get a taxi from the taxi stand near the Children’s park. For visiting Ranka Monastery and Ban Jhakri Waterfall, you can get a taxi from Ranka Taxi Stand.

Fares of the shared taxis in Gangtok are mostly fixed. The drivers however do tend to overcharge so ask around before you finalize with one. From Gangtok, it will cost Rs. 155 per person to get to NJP Railway station. Gangtok to Namchi is Rs. 110, Rs. 120 for Kalimpong.

Helicopter Ride in Gangtok

Yes, there is a helicopter service available in Gangtok for both moving in and out of town, and for local sightseeing. The helicopter service is known as Pawan Hans and is operated by Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC).

You can book a helicopter ride for reaching Gangtok from Bagdogra airport and vice versa. It is a journey of about 35 minutes and will cost you Rs. 3500 per person. A Helicopter can take a maximum of 5 people. You can call STDC @ 03592-203960 to inquire and book a seat. However, after the airport at Pakyong became operational, this service does not get used much as now the tourists can catch a flight direct to Pakyong which is barely 30 kilometers from Gangtok.

Local Sightseeing

A helicopter ride of approximately 15 minutes is available to give you a birds-eye view of Gangtok and the surrounding peaks. It will cost about Rs. 3000 per person. How to reach Gangtok in winter?

All of the ways to reach Gangtok that I explained above will remain applicable for the winter season as well. The only catch is that the roads towards high altitude places like Nathu La and Tsomgo Lake will get blocked at this time. But except for these places, the rest of the Gangtok remains completely open for tourists in the winter season.

hotels in gangtok

Where to stay in Gangtok

Accommodation is not going to be a problem at all in Gangtok, irrespective of the time of the year you arrive. The small town is a major tourist hub and as such, there is an endless list of hotels here. You can choose to either stay at the center of the town, like on or near Mahatma Gandhi Road, or a bit away from the crowd, on the outskirts of the town.

In terms of budget, assume a minimum of Rs. 1500 – 2000 as accommodation cost here. Finding a hotel below this amount is going to be really challenging, even in offseason.

I would not recommend booking a hotel in advance in Gangtok unless it was recommended by someone and you already knew that it was good. Like other tourist places like Shimla and Manali, there are a lot of tour agents and hotels here that talk big, charge much but offer poor and little. It will be better to arrive first, check out the hotels, find one per your liking, negotiate a deal and check-in.

If you would like to spend a couple of days in camps, then yes, you can do that as well. Campsites in Gangtok are mostly around River Teesta and in the surrounding jungle.

Where to eat in Gangtok

If you want to try some of the best foods that Gangtok has to offer, you must visit M.G. Road. Most of the good restaurants, eateries, and cafes are located here. Out here, you get a wide variety of foods. You can try Indian, western, Chinese, continental & other cuisines, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian. If you would like to stick to the Indian menu only, even then you will not be disappointed. Restaurants here serve some amazing north and South Indian dishes.

If you are a Jain, then I will recommend visiting a restaurant called ‘Rasoi’ on MG Road, near Sikkim Tourism Center. They serve a Jain Thali. There are several other pure vegetarian Veshno restaurants as well.

What to eat in Gangtok

It is really hard to name an item to try. The menu out here is vast and you will get the majority of Chinese, Indian, Tibetan and western menu. I will strongly recommend that you do not eat at your hotel and visit M.G. Road for your meals. Visit different restaurants and try something new; eat something you have never eaten before.

M G Road in Gangtok

Shopping in Gangtok

M.G. Road is once again the spot you will visit for shopping as well. The market remains open from morning to late evening every day, except Tuesday.

The entire market is lined up with shops selling different items like traditional Sikkimese dresses for women, Thangkas, decorative Sikkimese Cups, woolen carpets, Buddhist Prayer Flags, foldable wooden tables, pot holders, tray mats, handbags, homemade pickles, Temi Tea and several handicraft items that you can buy as a souvenir. These are just a few items over the top of my head. The list is actually much longer.

Sikkimese cups are what I will recommend buying. These are really beautiful to look at and will not cost you more than Rs. 100 apiece at most. Another item that I will strongly recommend is Temi Tea. It is tea but grown locally and organically using orthodox methods.

snowfall in sikkim

Weather of Gangtok

Because of its high altitude, this entire region experiences a mild and temperate climate all year long. The temperature here ranges from an average maximum of 22 °C (72 °F) in summer to an average minimum of 4 °C (39 °F) in winter.

Best time to visit

The months of March, April, May, and October are the best time to visit Gangtok. These are the months that will suit the majority of the tourists. This, however, may not be applicable to everyone. To see snow, you should come in January or February. For a budget trip, the months of July to September will be the best but the risk of the rain will also be there.

For visiting with family, March to May is a good time. January to March is best for a honeymoon trip. You should plan after April if you want to also visit Nathu La because the road to the pass remains closed in winter.

I have actually covered this topic in far greater details in a different article, When is the Best time to visit Gangtok that I will urge you to read.

Things to pack for Gangtok

Apart from other necessary items, the most important thing that you must not forget is a valid identity proof. If you have an Aadhar Card, bring that along. If not Aadhar, then any other government-issued ID proof will do but it should have your address on it. Without a valid ID proof, you will not be able to get a protected area permit to visit places like Nathu La.

What kind of clothes you should pack will entirely depend on your time of visit. It can sometimes get pretty hot here during the summer season and you may not need even a light jacket. If you were planning a visit in March or April, just pack your regular cotton clothes along with a light jacket or a few light woolens.  A cap to cover your head and a muffler can come handy as well.

If traveling in May or June, pack your regular cotton clothes and one light jacket just to be on a safer side. For a trip from July to September, the monsoon season, you should pack clothes that can dry faster. If possible, carry an umbrella and raincoat as well. A couple of light woolens or a jacket can be useful during morning and evening.

If you were traveling in October and November, you will need to bring your woolen clothes and a good warm jacket. For a trip between December to February, you will need to pack heavy woolens. Some other clothes to pack would be thermals, a warm heavy jacket, good quality gloves, cap that can cover your head and neck both, a muffler, shoes & warm socks.

Important Tip

Please note that you cannot rent winter clothes in Gangtok. But you can get snow gears like long fur coats, leather gloves, caps, etc or rent at places like Nathu La, Tsomgo Lake and Yumthang valley market. So if you were visiting in a non-winter month and had plans to travel to either Nathu La or Tsomgo Lake, you do not have to worry about packing heavy woolens. Just bring your light woolens and you can rent the snow gear for a few hours while visiting a high altitude spot.

monsoon in sikkim

Road Conditions

Road conditions around Gangtok are a little bad. Once you cross Siliguri and approach Gangtok, roads will be average at best. This remains applicable to the main town and other sightseeing places as well. The average speed between Gangtok and other cities will not be more than 25 – 30 kilometers per hour.

Best Vehicle

Considering the condition of the roads, an SUV with good ground clearance will be a good choice for the trip, if you were driving on your own. With that being said, it is not absolutely mandatory and you can easily complete the trip even in a small hatchback as well. The only condition is that it must be well maintained and well serviced for the trip.

  • You should avoid getting any tour packages from either the airport or the New Jalpaiguri railway station. They will provide you cabs in bad condition, lowest standard hotels and will definitely overcharge you.
  • Rather than buying a package, you should plan your trip all on your own. Rent a cab only for the desired destinations and book a hotel only after you have checked everything and negotiated a deal after bargaining.
  • Plastic bags are banned here. You cannot sell or use plastic bags in Gangtok.
  • Spitting or littering is a punishable offense. If found doing so, you will have to pay a huge fine. There are bins everywhere in the city for garbage disposal or spitting.
  • Smoking in public areas is not allowed and is a punishable offense.
  • Though Gangtok is safe for tourists, it is advisable to take a hotel in Gangtok itself and not in a remote area if you were traveling alone.

I hope the information above on visiting Gangtok was of help. If you have any questions; or need any other details; please feel free to ask in the comments section below; or at our Community Forum ; and I will be glad to answer.

It is India’s first litter and spit-free zone. No vehicular traffic is allowed inside MG marg. You can sit at the Titanic Park or at the various benches stretched across the mall and soak in the carnival-like jovial vibes, all throughout the year.

The Mall is surrounded by shops on both sides of the road which makes shopping easy and extremely pleasurable. It is where the yearly Gangtok Food and Culture festival is held. It happens around the month of December. Along with Sikkim’s multi-cultural cuisine, music and dance performances add to its charm. It is needless to say that this event attracts a large number of natives and tourists alike, every year.

A must visit spot for all nature lovers, the next stop of your Gangtok 1 day tour by private cab is Tashi View point, located just 6 km away from Gangtok. Spectacular views of the Himalayan mountain range and the grandeur of the Siniolchu peak and Mount Kanchenjunga will be enough to woo the nature lover in anyone. You can visit the Labrang Monastery and Phodong Monastery as well, which are not very far from here.

The sunrise and sunset from this viewpoint should not be missed by anyone as the peaks change color during this time. The stairs leading here can easily accommodate about 15-20 people at once.

gangtok trip by own car

Till 1962, Nathula Pass was the place through which the famous Silk trade Route between India and Tibet used to operate. Groups of mules were used by the traders to carry silk and gold from one country to another. If the sky is clear, you will be able to see this route winding down the Chumbi valley.

At the eastern horizon lies the magnificent peak of Chomolhari of Bhutan. The Indo-China border is only a few meters away from here, guarded by Indian and Chinese soldiers. A stairway will lead you to the border, and it is one of the most intriguing spots on your one day Gangtok tour . There is a memorial here that was constructed as a tribute to the Indian soldiers who lost their lives while defending the country.

The Indo-Chinese trade market is usually held from 1st June to 30th September annually and from Monday to Thursday every week during this time period. The Indian trade mart is situated at a place called Sherathang which is about 3000 metres below the Nathula pass. It hosts well-developed shopping marts and has one of India’s highest altitude internet Cafes.

Do visit Kupup , which has the second highest golf course in the world. Among other places worth visiting in Kupup, you will also come across the extremely renowned Gnathang Monastery and Gnathang War Memorial. This was built in memory of the British soldiers who died in the war with Tibet in the 1800s.

  • Must See / Things Do: : Check out the Nehru stone and don’t forget to take your camera along.

4. Himalayan Zoological Park

gangtok trip by own car

Himalayan Zoological Park is a place that will be loved and adored by all wildlife lovers and if you’re travelling with children on the one day Gangtok sightseeing package , this must not be missed at all. The Park was made to preserve wildlife without disturbing or scaring the animals in any way. Its aim was to keep them in their natural habitat. It is located in Bulbulay, at an altitude of 1780 metres and at a distance of approximately 3 km from Gangtok.

The view of Mount Khangchendzonga from this park is breathtaking. It covers an area of 205 hectares. The Park provides a home for a multitude of fauna species, found in the Himalayas, which include Himalayan Monal Pheasant, Himalayan Red Panda, Goral, Himalayan Palm Civet and Crimson-Horned Pheasant. Himalayan Zoological Park is the first wildlife park ever made in Sikkim.

It is basically a modern zoo, where the animals are kept amidst nature and their growth isn’t inhibited in any way. The best time to visit this place is during the months of February, March, April, May, September, and December. It is maintained by the Forests, Environment & Wildlife Management Department which is mainly funded by the Government of Sikkim.

  • Must See / Things Do: : Don’t miss out on seeing the Himalayan Black Bear and Snow Leopard Cat.

5. Mount Katao

gangtok trip by own car

Located in the northern part of Sikkim, a bit far from Gangtok and only 28 kms from Lachung, Mt. Katao is one among the grandest natural sights you can ever envision in our country. However, you will have to ask for permits from the army so to enter this otherwise prohibited area. This surreal mountain range is one of the most beautiful natural wonders of this planet, hands down.

Mount Katao is also an ideal hotspot for adventure junkies as it facilitates hosting matches of skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and stone grinding. The winter months are best for enjoying skiing and revelling amidst snow covered peaks. The best time to visit Mount Katao are the months of March, April, May and June.

From Mount Katao, you will get a view of the picturesque sight of the snow-white peaks and mid-way to this place you will also encounter an enthralling waterfall. This valley also houses a wide array of flora species such as poppy, primula and rhododendron.

The Perfect Sikkim Itinerary for 7 Days : A Guide for 2024

Last Updated on May 9, 2024

Planning a winter trip to Sikkim? I'm sure you'll have questions about how cold will it be, whether it's safe, which parts of Sikkim to visit in this season and where to stay? Well, you are at the right place as you'll have the answers to all these and more in this Sikkim itinerary crafted for nature-lovers.

I visited Sikkim first in February 2019 and then in April 2023 with my kid. When it comes to the question of best time to visit Sikkim, I declare winter the winner. Yes, it is cold, but there's snowfall, clear views of Kanchenjunga , the orange orchids and winter-blossoms. Embark on this journey through the winter wonderland to plan a trip to Sikkim in the winter.

The post contains affiliate links for tours, hotels etc. This means if you make any purchase through the links in the post, I may get a commission without any additional cost to you.

The Perfect Itinerary for a trip to Sikkim

Sikkim is a tiny state if you go by its area in square kilometers. But it’s hugely diverse. The steep terrain of the Eastern Himalayas makes it difficult to cover a lot of places in a short span of time. So ideally, you should have at least 7 days for a trip to Sikkim. The more the merrier.

7 days in Sikkim is a good time to cover the best that the state has to offer. North Sikkim has everything that you think of when we talk of the Himalayas- high altitude, snowfall, difficult hikes, yaks, and chilling winters.

But Sikkim isn’t all about that. There are many places in Pelling (west) and South Sikkim where you’ll get temperate climate, blossoms, sunshine, and amazing cycling tracks. Now you can decide where you want to go.

Check out the best places to visit in winte r in India.

A complete guide to plan a trip to Sikkim. Click to read all you need to know about this spectacular destination in the north-east region of India.

I had never seen snowfall before, so we decided to visit North Sikkim in February. But a trip to Sikkim in winter comes with its unique set of challenges.

A lot of places like Lachen and Gurdongmar lake are not open for children below a certain age and people with ailments. This is because of the lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes.

Heavy snowfall often causes road blockages in major tourist sites like Yumthang valley, Chhangu lake, etc. We were well aware of these challenges but still went for the below itinerary.

This is the ideal Sikkim itinerary for 7 days for any season.

  • Day 1: Flight to Bagdogra and drive to Gangtok
  • Day 2: Day trip to Tsongmo/ Chhangu Lake Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathu La Pass
  • Day 3: Drive from Gangtok to Lachung and Lachung sightseeing
  • Day 4: Yumthang Valley, Zero Point, Mt Katao
  • Day 5: Lachung to Gangtok and Gangtok sightseeing
  • Day 6: Gangtok to Pelling via Ravangla
  • Day 7: Pelling sightseeing
  • Day 8: Pelling to Bagdogra and flight back home

However if you visit Sikkim in winter, there is a possibility of missing the points of attraction in Day 2 and Day 4. In that case, you can to a 7-point tour of Gangtok on day 2 that includes waterfalls, scenic viewpoints, monasteries and markets.

On Day 7, even though we were stopped at the Yumthang valley checkpoint, we managed to squeeze in the offbeat Mount Katao in our itinerary instead.

Alternate itinerary if you want to explore the south and west Sikkim instead of North:

  • Day 2: Tsongmo/ Chhangu Lake Lake, Baba Mandir
  • Day 3: Drive to Namchi – Namchi sightseeing
  • Day 4: Drive to Ravangla via Temi Tea Estate
  • Day 5: Ravangla highlights(Buddha Park and Titanic viewpoint) and drive to Pelling
  • Day 6: Pelling sightseeing

You might also like to combine the Sikkim trip with Darjeeling. Since Darjeeling is famous for its resplendent tea gardens, you can 2 days in Darjeeling in the place of Namchi and Ravangla. You can start with Darjeeling, then stay in Gangtok for 2days and then in Pelling for 2 days. You must visit Buddha Park at Ravangla on your way to Pelling from Gangtok.

Where to Stay in Sikkim?

There are a large number of options for stay in Sikkim ranging from budget accommodations to luxury ones. The options are more in cities like Gangtok and Pelling. It’s scarce in North Sikkim. We chose the Sumit Group of Hotels for our stays in different parts of Sikkim. These were good mid-range hotels with complimentary breakfast and great locations.

Summit Namnag Hotel & Spa, Gangtok . It is a 3-star property with great food located close to the MG Road

Summit Khangri Karpo Retreat and Spa, Lachung . It’s a beautiful property with the much-needed mattress heaters in Lachung. The location offers spectacular views of the tranquil village. Heaters are not allowed in the region for environmental reasons, so mattress heaters are used to keep you warm and cozy in winter.

Summit Newa Regency, Pelling . It’s a 3-star hotel which is refurbished out of an old villa. Each room has an attached balcony that offers a clear view of Kanchenjunga. Even if you don’t get a mountain-facing room, don’t worry. The roof is open to all guests. Wake up early to experience the magical sunrise, when the peak turns golden as the first rays of the Sun touch Kanchenjunga.

Places to visit and stay in Lachung

How to reach and commute on a trip to Sikkim

The best and fastest way to reach Sikkim is to take a flight to Bagdogra. It’s a small Airport in West Bengal which is 68 km to Darjeeling and 138 km to Gangtok. Alternatively, you can take a flight to Kolkata, and from there book an overnight train to New Jalpaiguri.

If you decide to drive yourself in Sikkim, you must get your own car, as self-drive rentals are not available yet. Book an SUV beforehand and share your itinerary with them. Considering the difficult terrain, I suggest you book an SUV irrespective of the number of people. It’s safer. The rates are usually cheaper in Sikkim compared to most other states.

Travel Permits for Sikkim

In normal conditions, special permits are required to visit sensitive areas like Tsongmo Lake , Baba Mandir, Yumthang Valley, Lachung and further north. There are checkpoints at higher-altitude areas which are also under strict security control. Pre-book the cab service for intra-state transport , and know all the requirements from them. Once you give them the itinerary they will tell you which places will require permits. Carry two photo identity proofs including one address proof, and atleast 2 passport-size photos for each permit. It's good if you carry photocopies of your documents but scans will also be enough.

Given the COVID situation, Sikkim has recently opened for tourism with a set of additional rules. You have to mandatorily apply for a travel card before visiting Sikkim. Check all that you need to do that here . Book only those health & safety compliant hotels and services for your stay, commute and tours. You can identify them by government-issued stickers.

Highlights of our trip to Sikkim

You can find the detailed itinerary of Lachung and Ravangla on my blog. The blog posts on Gangtok and Pelling are coming soon. But here are the highlights of my Sikkim trip which I want to share with you. This will help you decide which places interest you more.

Marveling the nature in Katao

gangtok trip by own car

Katao is a piece of heaven we never knew about. We visited Katao only because Yumthang Valley was closed due to heavy snowfall. Gurdongmar Lake, which is the second-highest lake in India was also out of reach. Our driver suggested the place“Katao”.

I’ve never read about it before. The offbeat Katao offered scenes of raw natural beauty that I can never forget. It was like a Christmas wonderland and indeed the best place to visit in Sikkim in winter.

Just Living in Lachung

gangtok trip by own car

Another pleasant surprise of our trip was staying at Khangri Karpo Retrea t in Lachung. Located right across the Lachung river, it was a unique experience to spend time here. We reached Lachung at 2 pm on Day 3. We didn’t have any other plans that day except roaming around in the idyllic village.

The next day, we could only visit Katao. We returned at noon again and had nothing to do. But just the experience of walking along the river, spotting the waterfall, shivering in the sub-zero temperatures, and cozying up in the warm beds was so pure.

River Rafting in Teesta, Kalimpong

gangtok trip by own car

The third most memorable experience on our Sikkim trip was the river-rafting adventure in Kalimpong. You can do it on your way to Gangtok on Day 1 or on your way back to Bagdogra on the last day.

We did the latter, because we weren’t aware of this on the first day. The water was unexpectedly warm and comforting in the lowlands of Kalimpong. But the current was strong. It was a thrilling adventure indeed.

A trip to Chhangu Lake and Baba Mandir

gangtok trip by own car

Chhangu Lake also called Tsongmo Lake is a glacial lake perched at a height of 3753 meters. It’s frozen into white snow in winter, reflects the clear Autumnal sky in October, and is vibrant with colorful rhododendrons throughout the Spring and summer.

When we went to Tsongmo Lake on Day 2, it was my first experience of driving through the snow-laden track. It was special indeed. Further away from the Tsongmo Lake is Baba Mandir. It's a temple dedicated to a soldier Baba Harbhajan Singh, who became a martyr in this place.

Walk and Dine in the upbeat MG Road

MG Road in Gangtok- Trip to Sikkim

MG road is like a small piece of Europe in Sikkim. With the cobbled street, broad walkways, and lovely little cafes this is such an amazing place to spend your evenings in Gangtok.

Besides upscale cafes and restaurants, there are budget eateries too. You have souvenir shops, fashion outlets, supermarkets – everything that you expect in a big city. But the old-world charm is still not lost in it.

Visit Buddha Park Ravangla

Buddha Park, Ravangla Sikkim

Also known as Tathagatha Tsal this is a breathtakingly beautiful park with the Himalayas at its backdrop. The iconic feature of this park is the 130-foot tall Buddha statue. Inside the statue is a Buddha temple and museum where the main concepts of Buddhism have been explained through exquisite paintings.

Outside the statue is a robust garden with fountains, flowering trees, cafes, and other facilities. The park is surrounded by a series of prayer wheels which you will find in most places of worship in Sikkim. Read more about things to do in Ravangla .

Rabdentse Ruins in Pelling

Rabdentse Ruins Sikkim Trip

When we think of Sikkim, it’s a natural beauty that allures us. I’ve never thought of Sikkim as a historical site. Not until I trekked to the awe-inspiring Rabdentse Ruins. It was the second capital of the Kingdom of Sikkim in the 17th to 19th centuries. This was before it was destroyed by the Gurkha Army from Nepal. Watching the sunset on Kanchenjunga from the top of the ruined site is mesmerizing.

My only regret is that we couldn’t spend much time there. The trek took time reminding us of our poor fitness. We left soon after we reached the top, so as to see the historic Pemyangtse Monastery. Unfortunately, the monastery was closed at 4:30 pm (winter timings). We came to know that only after we reached the gate.

Update! I visited Pelling again in 2023, this time with my toddler, and spent a great time at Rabdentse and the Sidkeong Tulu Bird Park.

Skywalk in Pelling

Skywalk Pelling, Trip to Sikkim

The main attraction of the new skywalk in Pelling is the gigantic Chenrezig Statue. But what I loved more are the spectacular views from above. Like Buddha Park, here too there’s a temple inside the statue.

With the trend of building such giant installations in all Tibetan-Buddhist tourist spots, it might not remain a novelty anymore. But since it was my first trip to the Himalayas in nearly 7 years (my last trip was to Bhutan in 2013), I loved both the statues.

Read my complete guide to Pelling here .

The scenic drive from Gangtok to Lachung

Teesta Views in Trip to Sikkim

Another highlight of our trip was the absolutely picturesque drive from Gangtok to Lachung. I can't count the number of times we stopped on our route to marvel at the Teesta meandering through the lofty mountains, or the perennial waterfalls greeting us from the forests.

The wooden bridges on the creeks, the dangerous roads, the bamboo forests, and the breathtaking views of the valley – they will leave an indelible mark in your mind.

Window Shopping in Gangtok

gangtok trip by own car

Throughout Sikkim you will come across amazing Souvenirs to take home. My favorite one was the white overcoat that I bought on my way to Tsongmo Lake and wore throughout my trip. But besides that, Gangtok is a great place for window-shopping along with the actual shopping.

Decorative masks, wall hangers, porcelain cups are the specialty items to watch out for. Trust me, you'll feel the urge to take everything back home with you. But that's not practical given that the space in my luggage and content in my wallet are both limited.

Packing Tips for Sikkim

Sikkim in winter needs a little extra effort on the packing side. Especially if you are planning to visit North Sikkim. Gangtok , Pelling and Namchi usually have moderate climate even during winter. Gangtok feels a little colder because of frequent rainfall. Here is a packing checklist for Sikkim in winter, so that you can be prepared without over-packing stuff.

*  The items marked in asterix are needed even if you visit Sikkim in the spring or summer, that is, in the months of April – June. The temperature at different places in Sikkim ranges from 13 degrees in the North to 25 degrees in South. You don't need thermals, gloves or woolen socks in the summer. A thick-foamed waterproof jacket is enough for North Sikkim as well as the unexpected rains.

Besides these, remember to carry multiple sets of undergarments as it will be too cold to wash and dry. They key is to have layers. In Pelling you might not even need a jacket if you are wearing a thermal beneath during the day, while at night you can put on a jacket or cardigan.

Do not pack boots , you can rent them. Also do not get any skiing kit with you. Though places like Katao and Yumthang valley get enough snowfall , the land is covered with trees. So it is not appropriate for skiing anyway.

Gangtok Travel Guide

Manali, guide to visiting manali, exploring manali, trip to manali

  • Overview Of Gangtok

History And Culture Of Gangtok

How to get to gangtok, best time to travel to gangtok, getting around gangtok, breaking stereotypes about gangtok, go check out, a guide to exploring gangtok.

Gangtok is the capital city of the state of Sikkim, located in the north-eastern region of India. The region is considered to be the most convenient base to further explore the beautiful state of Sikkim. Although, Gangtok is not your typical traditional hill station. It’s a hill station with its own quirks, all of which we’ve covered in our Gangtok Travel Guide, which is why travellers find the place special.

gangtok, gangtok travel guide, traveling to north east

The city is most famous for capturing the best views of the mighty Kanchenjunga. When the sky is clear, it’s guaranteed that you will catch a great view of this mountain. On other days, it’s covered by puffy light-weight moving clouds, which causes your view of the peaks to constantly appear and disappear. Gangtok has lots to offer to all kinds of visitors. But standing in admiration of these snow-covered peaks during sunrise and sunset, with prayer flags fluttering somewhere around you, is the most-loved aspect about Gangtok.

For the people who live here, Kanchenjunga is not just the third highest summit in the world, but it is also a sacred landmark. In Tibetan, Kanchenjunga means ‘five treasures of the high snow’, and is truly treasured by the locals and visitors of Gangtok. There are a few interesting mythical stories created about this mountain too. Some locals believe that Nee-gued (a Yeti) wanders on the slopes of the mountain.

To an urban dweller, the city of Gangtok can seem to carry the perfect amount of urbanisation and an upbeat energy that doesn’t damage the aura of the hill station. Gangtok feels neat, tidy and cozy because of how the hill houses and mountain landscapes seem to be well-placed with each other. Because of its close proximity to nature, the city also has strict rules on recycling and tree conservation. Plastic is banned completely and most of the tiny buildings are painted green as a commitment to being environment friendly. This is what keeps the air and water so clean, so much so that the residents drink water directly from the tap, which is not a common practice in most cities in India. Some houses claim to not keep ceiling fans, as the weather always seems just perfect.

The city is small and is the least populous city in India. Though it can seem crowded at times, it’s always minus the hustle and bustle that plagues other hill stations. Gangtok has the essence of a pleasant unhurried way of life and you could spend hours on an open terrace feeling rejuvenated.

Gangtok is a mountain-town that is also established as a peaceful and spiritual Buddist pilgrimage center. The culture of Buddhism in Gangtok is evident in the local practices and beliefs too. You will come across prayer flags, shrines or small paintings of symbols of Buddhism. These auspicious symbols can be seen on the windows, doors, wall hangings or even on souvenirs like a tea cup you purchase. It is easy to spot some huge Buddhist-themed murals on the street too. Handicrafts of Buddhism are supported by the locals and the Buddhist monks.

Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal was the last monarch of Sikkim, up until the year 1975. That was when India officially added Sikkim as its 22nd state, while the capital of the state was Gangtok. Chogyal Palden Thondup Namgyal also saw the importance of the Buddhist arts and crafts for the Sikkimese identity. This is why you will find institutes like the Namgyal Institute of Tibetology, and museums that act as safe homes to preserve Buddhist text and crafts.

Monasteries in Sikkim are not just to preserve the crafts of the culture, but also hold religious significance for the people because of the energy they themselves feel there. The Enchey monastery is one such monastery that holds a special place in the hearts of the people of Gangtok . It is believed that Khangchendzonga and Yabdean are the protecting deities that reside in the Enchey monastery. This way, you can see how the mountains of the city of Gangtok are also associated with the religious beliefs of the people and considered as sacred deities.

There are several other monasteries which make Gangtok the center for learning Buddhist culture. Thangka painting, wood carving and temples with artifacts built in the style of Tibetan architecture are common sights for the city. The state of Sikkim shares its borders with Tibet, Nepal and China which is why Gangtok has such a diverse culture. The culture followed by the people is a blend of Nepali and Bhutanese culture too.

In today’s time, this town has also developed a contemporary art scene. The people of Gangtok have a growing dedication to art and music. A majority of the urban youth enjoy western music and Hindi rock. Gangtok hosts a number of music festivals as well. One such festival is the Mangan Music Festival, which takes place in the month of December. If you don’t make it for a festival, don’t worry, because you could still enjoy a karaoke night or listen to live music played by Northeastern bands at a local pub. You would surely find yourself nodding to the music with a chilled locally brewed beer, known as Dansberg.

Gangtok is also famous for its street food such as momos, Sha Phaley and beef/chicken thukpa. These are just a few of the dishes that you will keep craving as the weather demands for hot comfort food.

Getting To Gangtok By Air – The airport nearest to Gangtok is about 128 kilometres away in Bagdogra, in the state of West Bengal . From the airport, you can hire a shared taxi or a private vehicle that will get you to Gangtok in approximately 4 hours. The drive from Bagdogra to Gangtok is stunning and peaceful with gorgeous mountains and the River Teesta comforting you on the drive.

gangtok, gangtok travel guide, traveling to north east

If you want to try something crazy, you can also take a helicopter to get to Gangtok in less than 30 minutes from the airport. However, just a heads up, this entirely depends on the weather condition. We would recommend trying this on your way out of Gangtok, as it’s a grand way to end the trip. There is a Tourist Information Center that will help you purchase the tickets.

Getting To Gangtok By Train – The nearest railway station to Gangtok is about 148 kilometres away, known as New Jalpaiguri in Siliguri . The station is well-connected to major cities in India. From New Jalpaiguri, you can take a taxi to Gangtok or go to Siliguri Bus Station and catch a state-run bus to Gangtok, which will take you about 5-6 hours.

Getting To Gangtok By Road – If you’re going to be taking the trip from Siliguri, Darjeeling , or Kalimpong, you can consider driving to Gangtok. For those coming from other cities or a different state altogether, you might want to opt for the train or flight, because the distance on the road will be taxing.

Although, if you’re the adventurous kind, the road trip will definitely be thrilling. Depending on where you’re coming from, you’ll be getting into the state through Bihar , Jharkhand or West Bengal. In any case, you will be taking multiple State Highways and National Highways. The journey, however, will be a fun one for sure.

It’s vital that you visit Gangtok when the weather is clear, so you at least get a good enough view of the Kanchenjunga mountain range. The best months are from October to mid-December, because you could catch some of the traditional festivals such as Losoong festival, where Buddhist monks perform Cham dances.

The Gangtok Food and Cultural festival is also held in December every year by the Sikkim tourism department to promote tourism. There will be several food stalls, and singing and dance performances making Gangtok livelier in December.

Between March and May, flowers are in bloom and skies are clear. March is when Gangtok has an international flower festival that is an absolute treat to the eye.

January and February can be an option if you’re a fan of cold weather. June to September is when it rains, causing landslides and foggy weather that blocks your view of the mountains. We’d recommend avoiding a visit during the rains if possible.

Taxis would be your main mode of transport in Gangtok and will fall cheaper if you decide to share the ride. There’s no other means of public transport and depending on the day you will be exploring, you could also rent a private car for multiple days. It will be much cheaper that way too, particularly beneficial for the low-budget travelers. You can approach a local tour operator or speak to someone at the hotel help desk. There are taxi stands available where you can agree on the number of days and time you’d need a private vehicle. Make sure there’s absolute clarity on trips that are included and whether it would be private or shared.

The entry to MG road has an entrance sign that states spit and litter free zones.

Since you’ll most probably be hoping to get a good view of the Kanchenjunga mountain range, the city of Gangtok has set up some viewpoints for you. The peaks are visible from Hanuman Tok, Ganesh Tok and Tashi viewpoint. You can take a call on which viewpoint to visit, depending on how fast you can get there and not miss the sunrise or sunset. Many of the monasteries also offer some spectacular views of the mountain range.

Tsomgo Lake

This is a gorgeous glacial lake, situated around 40 kms away from Gangtok city. You can hire a government approved taxi service to get here and it would take you an hour or so to reach. At the lake, you will surely spot a yak and if you visit in December, the lake is covered in ice. You would need a permit to enter this area, issued at the checkpoint when you reach there. Darjeeling to Gangtok – How to Reach & A Kickass Itinerary

Darjeeling , Sikkim , West Bengal

Last Updated on: Jun 11, 2020

Darjeeling and Gangtok are the two most coveted hill stations in Eastern India for travellers. Both Darjeeling and Gangtok are blessed with magnificent views of the Kanchenjunga ranges, pleasant weather and some wonderful tourist attractions. The distance between Darjeeling to Gangtok is about 100 km and these two destinations are often visited together. Every year a lot of tourists visit Gangtok and Darjeeling, especially in summer to experience the beauty of the hill stations and to enjoy the salubrious climate. We usually get a lot of questions from our readers about Darjeeling to Gangtok trip. So in this blog, we decided to write an article on Darjeeling and Gangtok itinerary .

This post will help you in planning a trip to both Darjeeling and Gangtok. You can also go through the other resources in our blog about Sikkim and Darjeeling to get a clear idea about these places.

Siliguri to Darjeeling

Table of Contents

Where are Darjeeling and Gangtok Located?

Darjeeling is located in Darjeeling district of West Bengal at an altitude of 6710 feet. Also known as the Queen of Hills, the breathtaking beauty of Darjeeling is magnified by the towering Kanchenjunga ranges and the lush green tea gardens surrounding it. Darjeeling had served as British settlement before Indian independence and the mark of colonial architecture can still be found in this picturesque hill station.

Gangtok is the capital of one of the most pleasant states of India, Sikkim . Located at an altitude of 5410 feet this hill station in East Sikkim is spread over a forested mountain that faces the snow-clad Himalayan peaks. There are several vantage points from where you can get the majestic view of the Kanchenjunga ranges. Sikkim is one of the states where smoking in public is prohibited and Gangtok adheres to this rule strictly.

Both Gangtok and Darjeeling has a plethora of attractions and activities to entice their visitors. Though similar, both these hilly towns have their distinct charm and beauty. Gangtok is the main town of Sikkim from where you can visit the other tourist destinations in Sikkim.

Darjeeling to Gangtok – Where should I visit first?

This is one of the most important as well as a confusing question that comes while planning a Darjeeling to Gangtok trip. Both the hill stations lie in different states. So shall I visit Darjeeling first or Gangtok? The time taken from Darjeeling to Gangtok and vice versa is about 4 hours by car (not shared ones) . It takes 3 hours to reach Darjeeling from Bagdogra/NJP by car under normal traffic conditions and about 4.5 hours to reach Gangtok. While you can practically visit any of the two at first, visiting Gangtok (Sikkim) has a few distinct advantages.

This question comes only if you are arriving and leaving from Bagdogra or NJP. If you are directly flying in or out of Pakyong Airport in Sikkim, then you have to plan accordingly.

The distance between Gangtok to Bagdogra is 126 km and that from Gangtok to Siliguri is 122 km . From NJP/Bagdogra, you have to take the National Highway NH10. There is no other route towards Gangtok. Usually, the route faces a lot of traffic jam in several places like Matigara, Darjeeling More, Kalijhora and Ranipool. So if you are returning from Gangtok to NJP/Bagdogra, you have to start quite early in order to not miss your train or flight. There have been instances where trains have been missed because of the traffic jam faced just before entering Siliguri town area and in Siliguri itself.

We had been once stuck in one such traffic jam while returning from Gangtok. Thankfully we had started early. Even then, we had to leave our car and hop on to a rickshaw that took us through the lanes and narrow alleys to NJP Railway Station.

Darjeeling, on the other hand, is nearer to NJP and Bagdogra and you have to take another route. Infact there are three routes from Darjeeling to the NJP and Bagdogra. So you can have a little more time in your hand if you are coming down from Darjeeling on your return.

If you decide to return from Gangtok, then we advise you to keep sufficient time in hand for the journey.

Secondly, there are some vehicle restrictions in Sikkim. West Bengal registered vehicles are not permitted beyond the Deorali Taxi Stand. Deorali is located about 2 km from Gangtok city and you have to take another local taxi to get to your hotel or hostel. You might think that you can walk this distance. But an uphill walk with your luggage will not be a good idea. However, there are no such restrictions in Darjeeling and any vehicle from Sikkim can enter the town.

If you are planning to rent a car for the entire trip, then ask your rental company about the vehicle restriction in Sikkim.

Distance between Darjeeling to Gangtok

The distance between Darjeeling to Gangtok is 100 km and it takes about 4 hours to reach from one place to the other under normal traffic conditions.

How to reach Gangtok?

From bagdogra/njp/siliguri.

The roads from Bagdogra Airport, NJP Railway Station and Siliguri town all meet at Sevoke Road that further leads to NH10. After reaching Tessta Bazar, you have to cross the Teesta Bridge and then continue up to Rangpo, a small bordering town. Rangpo is the entry point to Sikkim and has a checkpost. Until 1975, Rangpo used to be the international border between India and Sikkim.  Gangtok is another 39 km from Rangpo.

If you do not stay in that hotel, then they try to create a lot of fuss and you end up paying more to avoid unnecessary trouble. Come out of the railway station. You will see a lot of sumos, boleros and such cars at the stand. Approach them and ask a few people before deciding.

Arnav Mathur

Quite an interesting itinerary you have here. The last time i was in the area, i decided to head to Kalimpong for 2 days from Bagdogra, before my Bhutan Trip last year. Should’ve gone to Darjeeling instead. But then again, would have been disappointed as I would have had to head back soon. Definitely going to be planning a trip exclusively around this itinerary, once travel resumes.

Agni & Amrita

Thanks Arnav. There is always a next time and whenever you come to visit Darjeeling, we will tag along!

Nitin

Wonderfully explained… very clear & in dot….

I am planning to visit Darjeeling + Gangtok 6N/5D in June, 2021 – with spouse & 2 kids. Local travel looks to be a costly affair there. What is your opinion about using shared vehicles for site-seeing; mainly from safety & comfort point of view.

Agni Amrita

Thank you Nitin! You can use local vehicles for travelling from one place to another (like Gangtok to Pelling etc etc). However, for sightseeing, you have to book a car. Also, some places like North Sikkim, Silk route and Chhangu Lake/Ntahula Pass cannot be done in shared cars. You can PM us in Instagram or Facebook if you need any other help. Thanks again.

June

Hey! Have you been to lingsey?

No we haven’t!

Balasubramanian

Suggest some good hotels in Lachen and Lachung

Sanjay Jain

Nice itinerary and Very well explained. I was earlier confused spending all 5 days in Gangtok or do Gangtok+Darjeeling but latter seemsto be a better idea. We plan to go sometime around Holi (18th) in March. Is that a good time to visit? Will it be cold around that time?

Yes, March will be a bit cold.

Hanisha

Thank you so much for these details you guys, an insightful one this is.:)

I am planning a solo travel and thinking to spend time only at Gangtok, would you be able to share the number of days ideal to spend in Gangtok?

3 days in Gangtok will be enough to cover all the attractions.

NIKHIL MIRKAR

Love how you have put this down. Very insightful.

We, a couple are planning a tour of 3 nights darjeeling and 4 nights gangtok and 2 nights in Pelling.

The travel agents taxi offere seem to be very high for this whole tour.

Can we take point to point taxis when there and will they be reliable and cheaper?

Yes, you can take point-to-point cabs. For sightsseing, like Gangtok and Pelling sighteeings, it is better to book a cab. Changing cabs for that will be a bit of hassle. But for travelling from one point to another (like Gangtok to Pelling etc), you can take separate cabs. Hope this helps! Have a wonderful trip and let us know how it went!

Abinash Patnaik

This is awesome. So much in-depth and insightful info

Thank you so much!

The cost of living and travel expenses can vary based on individual preferences and choices, but as of my last knowledge update in December 2023, Darjeeling is generally considered more expensive than Gangtok, Sikkim.  Darjeeling is a popular tourist destination and has a higher cost of living compared to Gangtok. The demand for accommodation, food, and other amenities in Darjeeling can contribute to higher prices. Additionally, Darjeeling's popularity as a hill station and its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its tea plantations. On the other hand, Gangtok, while also a popular tourist destination, may offer relatively more budget-friendly options for accommodation, food, and activities compared to Darjeeling.
