Asian Tour adds 10-event International Series, including stops in UK, Middle East

  • Associated Press

Britain and the Middle East will stage Saudi-funded golf tournaments on the Asian Tour as part of a new 10-event series that marks the latest move in an increasingly bitter battle for power with the sport's two main tours.

The International Series is being funded by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and fronted by former world No. 1 Greg Norman, who has been behind attempts for a proposed breakaway super league which could tempt players away from the U.S. PGA Tour and the European tour.

The series, Norman said, will soon be headed to the United States, too.

"Healthy competition and respectful competition should be spread globally. That's why we're not going to geofence this,'' Norman said at Tuesday's announcement, which came ahead of this week's $5 million Saudi International on the Asian Tour.

"That's why it's so encouraging that we can go to London. It'll be so encouraging when we go to the United States. Remember what I said, this is just the beginning.''

The series, described by Asian Tour chief executive Cho Minn Thant as "a level up'' compared to regular events on the tour, will start in Thailand from March 3-6 and include a stop at the Centurion Club outside London where the prize purse will be $2 million. Two more tournaments will be in the Middle East, he said.

The tournaments will be open to players from other tours.

Many of golf's top players, including Bryson DeChambeau and Phil Mickelson, have chosen to compete this week in Saudi Arabia -- where appearance money is lucrative -- instead of on the tours either side of the Atlantic.

Rights groups have criticized players for appearing at events funded by Saudi Arabia because of the kingdom's human rights record.

Norman insisted he is simply helping to grow the game.

"We're not in this for a fight, there's no question,'' said the Australian, speaking in his role as chief executive of LIV Golf Investments, which has increased its injection of cash to the Asian Tour to $300 million. "We're in this for the good of the game. That's where we're at.

"It's disappointing to be honest, personally disappointing, to see some of the attacks that have been taking place unwarrantedly. If you pre-judge anybody without knowing the facts, then shame on you, to be honest with you.''

Norman envisages carving up golf like a piece of pie.

"So these institutions you're talking about,'' he said, referring to the two main tours, "if a piece of that pie has disappeared, does the pie get smaller or does the pie get bigger? We see the piece of pie that we're taking, the opportunity to see through the lost opportunity, makes the pie bigger.''

Asked if he still had plans for a super league, Norman said: "Will there be things announced in the future? Absolutely ... but right now our focus is on this. Our mission is to make sure this platform is firmly cemented in the world of golf and where we see it sitting, and we'll focus on that, and then there will be another announcement, and then there will be another announcement.

"This journey, this is not a one-off journey. You want to sit back and see the evolution and how this is all building out. It's going to be an incredible one.''

No specific dates were announced for the later events in the International Series, nor did Norman confirm whether any top players had signed up yet to appear. There's also the question of how and whether players on the European tour and PGA Tour would get releases to play on the Asian Tour.

The March 3-6 event in Thailand will clash with the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill on the PGA Tour and the Kenya Open on the European tour.

"Understand the fact that we have always and continue to be very collaborative and cooperative with any of the institutions right across the board,'' Norman said. "We want to work together side by side.''

Hideki matsuyama fires 62 to win genesis, becomes asia’s most prolific tour winner.

  • Associated Press ,
  • Associated Press

LOS ANGELES — Hideki Matsuyama set the Riviera record for the lowest closing round by a winner Sunday in the Genesis Invitational, giving the Japanese star another record that means far more to him.

Matsuyama rallied from a six-shot deficit with a 9-under 62, punctuated by consecutive shots inside a foot of the hole, to win for the ninth time in his career on the PGA Tour. That breaks the record for Asian-born players he shared with K.J. Choi of South Korea.

Matsuyama finished at 17-under 267 for a three-shot victory over Will Zalatoris (69) and Luke List (68). Patrick Cantlay and Xander Schauffele, best friends playing in the final group, faded in the middle of the back nine and tied for fourth.

It was Matsuyama’s first victory since his playoff win at the Sony Open two years ago, after which Shigeki Maruyama sent him a text to remind him of a conversation they once had about becoming the most prolific PGA Tour winner of Asian players.

This one looked unlikely at the start of a final round in which Cantlay had a two-shot lead and looked to be in total control of his game. But it was a struggle from the start for Cantlay, who couldn’t find fairways or greens or make many putts that mattered.

Cantlay missed a 12-foot birdie attempt on the easy par-5 opening hole, and then didn’t have another birdie putt until the sixth hole. He closed with a 72.

Cantlay played with Schauffele, who struggled just as much. Schauffele got back in the mix with a tough birdie on the par-4 10th and holing a bunker shot for eagle on the par-5 11th. He bogeyed the next three holes and and rallied at the end for a 70.

List set the early pace. Zalatoris took the lead in the middle of the back nine. At one point there was a five-way tie for the lead heading to the tough stretch on the back nine at Riviera.

And then Matsuyama seized control with sheer brilliance. His approach to the tough 15th carried the bunker and rolled out to 8 inches.

“The second shot on 15 was probably the best shot I had,” he said through his interpreter.

The Genesis Invitational - Final Round

On the par-3 16th, he let the club dangle as he followed the flight, unsure where it would go until he heard the crowd cheer for a shot that rolled to within 6 inches. He got up-and-down for a third straight birdie on the par-5 17th to stretch his lead to three shots, and by then, no one could catch him.

Matsuyama’s final act was a sharp-breaking 4-footer for par on the final hole, and he clinched his fist — a rare show of emotion by the Japanese star — when it dropped. His 62 broke, by one, the Riviera record for best closing round by a winner set by Doug Tewell in 1986.

Matsuyama had struggled the last two years, starting with a neck and back injury at Bay Hill in March 2022. He had only six top-10s worldwide during that stretch and fell out of the top 50 in the world.

“Ever since that injury, I was worried every week something bad might happen,” Matsuyama said. “This week I had no issue. I played without any worries. That really helped.”

The win was worth $4 million from the $20 million purse and moves him to No. 20 in the world with the entire major season ahead of him. Matsuyama now has 18 wins worldwide, eight on the Japan Golf Tour and the unofficial Hero World Challenge, also hosted by Tiger Woods.

‘An Asian Tour vs DP World Tour match would be quite fiery’

Published: 11 March 2024

Cho Minn Thant is the head of the Asian Tour.

Cho Minn Thant is the head of the Asian Tour.

Cho Minn Thant used the Saudi millions to rebuild the Asian Tour. Now he wants to rival the global schedule on the DP World Tour with the help of LIV and an International Series that is setting up roots in the UK.

Back when LIV Golf was still just a fantasy and the Asian Tour was trying to remain solvent during the pandemic, its Commissioner Cho Minn Thant was quietly working from home in Thailand, hurriedly putting together a plan to change the established world order in golf.

Thant had only been in the job for a little over six months when the Saudis recruited him in early 2020 to help engineer the launch of a new breakaway league.

It was during those conversations that the topic of the Asian Tour came up, which is what led to the Saudi Invitational being presented as its flagship event from the start of 2022.

Asian Tour Commissioner Cho Minn Thant is on good terms with Greg Norman unlike many of golf's leaders.

It was there that Greg Norman, in his role as LIV Golf Investments CEO, stood alongside Thant and announced a $300 million commitment over the next 10 years to increase playing opportunities and prize money on the Asian Tour through a new premier series – what we now know to be the International Series.

“We are setting the Asian Tour up as a powerful new force on the world golf stage,” boomed Norman at the time, though he could just as easily have been talking about LIV Golf or Saudi’s Public Investment Fund (PIF).

Together, they spent the better part of two years taking a sledgehammer to the doors of golf’s greatest powerhouses, waging a war that spilled over into the courts.

Thant – who ranks as  one of the most influential people in golf – was there to pick up the pieces, offering World Ranking points to Cameron Smith, Brooks Koepka and the other LIV members caught up in a storm of fines and suspensions.

Asian Tour Commissioner Cho Minn Thant has benefitted from the emergence of LIV Golf.

The $5 million Saudi International, in Jeddah, was the obvious draw, but the International Series grew from seven to 10 tournaments last year and contributed $19 million to a record prize pot on the Asian Tour that fell just short of $34 million.

“I guess the misconception that the name Asian Tour has is that it identifies our tournaments as only being in Asia and only for Asian players,” Thant tells TG . “We’re far from that right now.”

They have certainly rebounded from the brink after what Thant describes as “the worst time the Asian Tour has ever seen”.

The pandemic hurt every golf tour, but it almost killed the Asian Tour. Staff had to take substantial pay cuts just so players had a place to come back to. It took 20 months until a golf ball was struck again, which meant the 2020 season wasn’t complete until January 2022.

“It was tragic for our players,” admits Thant. “A lot of them had to get teaching roles or find other ways to survive. We were by far the hardest hit out of all the tours worldwide, just because of the territories that we visit and the amount of border crossings that requires.”

That they were even able to get going again owes a lot to Thant’s connections and his desire to break free from the shadow of the DP World Tour.

Cho Minn Thant helped save the Asian Tour from financial ruin.

They were offered the security of an extended strategic alliance with the DP and PGA Tour, but Thant wanted more for the Asian Tour than just feeder tour status, which is why his eyes lit up at another proposal on the table.

“We decided prior to me joining as Commissioner that we wanted to go at it independently, without relying on partnerships,” he says. “There was this proposal from the PGA and European Tours, and then one from the Saudi camp. You really couldn’t compare the two.

“We came out of Covid with a 10-year plan with LIV Golf and Golf Saudi. Immediately, we picked up 11 new tournaments. We picked up money to develop our tour and quite a few of our members played LIV Golf in year one, which was last year. This year they’ve had the chance to qualify for LIV and that’s a great pathway for our members.”

The global nature of the Asian Tour membership is now reflected in its schedule, which last year included events in England, Scotland, the Middle East and New Zealand.

Today, Thant is speaking to us from his home in Thailand, overlooking Black Mountain Golf Club, but his office is over 800 miles away in Singapore. He is married, with a child, but he struggles to spend much time with his family outside of the tour’s summer break.

“I’ve just been on the road for three and half weeks. I’m home for two days and then I leave again tomorrow! That’s pretty much my life during the season.”

Thant was raised and educated in Australia but he’s been with the Asian Tour since 2007, working his way up through the ranks before being promoted to the role of CEO and Commissioner in July 2019.

At the time his remit was to rebuild a sleeping giant, but now he’s working towards a five-year expansion plan to grow the schedule from 23 to 30 events, with an average purse of $2.5 million.

Whether he manages it or not is likely to hinge on TV exposure, which Thant has struggled to offer fans and sponsors over the last two years since the breakdown in his relationship with the DP World Tour.

Cho Minn Thant played in the International Series Pro-Am in Singapore.

The 2023 International Series was noticeably absent from TV screens in the UK, despite the star-studded fields they attracted. And Thant is unable to offer any guarantees for when it might appear again.

“In the past couple of years, we’ve found it quite difficult to do television deals because there was a bit of blockage from the DP World and PGA Tours.

“In the UK, we were always part of a package deal with Sky but now they only take the European Tour and they are not inclined to take the Asian Tour because of the DP World Tour’s influence. Hopefully, that type of market restriction will be history once this framework agreement is signed.”

Thant was preparing for a board meeting in Singapore when he first found out about the truce struck between his biggest financial backer and two of his biggest competitors.

Like everyone else, he has been kept in the dark ever since, raising fears among the players we’ve spoken to that the Asian Tour is at risk of being forgotten about if the Saudis can get their hands on another new toy.

“We’ve received assurances in terms of the International Series and our link to LIV remaining for the term that was signed,” admits Thant, “but there hasn’t been much discussion about how we move forward with this framework agreement.

“I’m kind of unsure of where the Asian Tour and LIV Golf will fit in because we don’t want to be a feeder to the DP World Tour again. We feel we are very strong on our own. The best-case scenario for us is that players have the right to choose where to play.”

It used to be the case that players could compete freely on the DP World and Asian Tours, until Keith Pelley put a stop to it in late 2021 and severed all ties, including every co-sanctioned event and exemption pathway. Now if a DP World Tour member wishes to play on the Asian Tour, they must seek a release in writing with 30 days’ notice.

“In a lot of cases, the releases aren’t granted,” explains Thant, “so they’re subject to fines and disciplinary action if they come and play the Asian Tour.

“We were open last season to co-sanctioning with them for our event in England, but then they went ahead with an event in Asia without co-sanctioning with us. I don’t think there’s much interest from the European Tour (in working together) and we’re perfectly happy with having our International Series as sole, sanctioned events.” While prize money and revenue are on the up, much of that wealth is concentrated on the Saudi International and the International Series, which is underwritten by LIV Golf Investments.

Thant doesn’t want to be entirely dependent on Saudi money and is currently talking with venues in the United Arab Emirates, as well as prospective partners and sponsors to help cement the Asian Tour’s status as a thriving global circuit.

Sergio Garcia was one of a number of LIV golfers to tee it up at the Asian Tour's St Andrews Bay Championship.

“The funding from Saudi is a major blessing, but it’s also a little bit of a deterrent for sponsors to get involved because they think the Asian Tour has the ability to fund every tournament,” concedes Thant.

“We do have the International Series going for another eight years, but we don’t want to be reliant on that as our sole source of revenue. Our plan is to use that as a backup and to populate those tournaments with their own title sponsors so they would still survive if we didn’t have the funds from LIV Golf. We see it as an opportunity, rather than having a reliance on the money.”

Work on several holes on the back nine of Foxhills' Longcross course – renowned as one of Surrey’s top tree-lined layouts and consistently featured in GB top 100 rankings – has just finished and is now open to members and visitors.

Beyond these lingering concerns, Thant still needs to piece together the structure of the International Series and the full calendar for this season. Conversations, he says, are ongoing with several interested parties, with Foxhills already confirmed as host of the International Series England in August.

He talks up the idea of adding a mixed event, potentially in association with the Ladies European Tour, and likes the idea of rebranding the Order of Merit as the Race to Saudi. The mischievous smile on his face suggests he has a lot of big and bold ideas in mind – including, perhaps, a blockbuster match against a rival tour.

“Well, once upon a time we had the EurAsia Cup which is Asians versus Europeans,” he says, excitedly. “That was almost like a lead up to the Ryder Cup, so something like that, given the politics and everything, might be quite fiery.”

Asian Tour announces major investment with addition of 10 new marquee events

The new events will be played annually across Asia, the Middle East and Europe and will join established Asian Tour tournaments to comprise a 25-event season from 2022; Greg Norman appointed CEO of LIV Golf Investments as announcement is made

The Asian Tour schedule is set for a major revamp next year with the addition of a series of 10 new marquee events.

The new tournaments will be staged annually over the next 10 years with a commitment of over $200m (£145.4m) to support playing opportunities and prize funds from a newly-formed company, LIV Golf Investments, backed by the Private Investment Fund which operates on behalf of the government of Saudi Arabia.

The events will be played across Asia, the Middle East and Europe and will join established Asian Tour tournaments to comprise a 25-event season from 2022.

There are plans to attract an international field of headline talent to the new events through an open eligibility category regardless of Tour affiliation so opportunities are available to the broadest cross section of players.

Former world No 1 Greg Norman has been appointed as CEO of LIV Golf Investments and he said: "This is only the beginning.

Asian Tour And Greg Norman Unveil Saudi-Backed International Series

A new 10-event series has been announced for the Asian Tour, with $300m invested over the next decade

Greg Norman smiles

LIV Golf Investments, the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund-backed company headed by Greg Norman, along with the Asian Tour has unveiled details of 'The International Series' for 2022/23, which features 10 tournaments across Asia and Europe.

The initial idea was first announced in November , with the investment said to be $200m - and that number has now risen to $300m. The International Series will debut with the $1.5m 'The International Series Thailand' at Black Mountain Golf Club in Hua Hin.

The International Series, which will form part of the Asian Tour schedule, will then head to Centurion Club in Hertfordshire in June, where a $2m prize fund is up for grabs, before further stops in Korea, Vietnam, Indonesia, the Middle East and then China, Singapore and Hong Kong.

The huge $300m investment from LIV Golf Investments, whose majority shareholder is the Saudi Arabian Public Investment Fund [PIF], will see The International Series form part of the Asian Tour schedule over the next decade. The newly-formed LIV Investments' purpose is said to 'holistically improve the health of professional golf on a truly global scale to help unlock the sports’ untapped worldwide potential.'

“We are on the threshold of a new era for Asian golf,” said Cho Minn Thant, Commissioner and CEO, Asian Tour. “The International Series is a new upper-tier of elite events, the likes of which the region has not seen before, that will mark the start of a phenomenal period of growth for the Asian Tour. It also signifies the beginning of our relationship with our new strategic partner LIV Golf Investments and its CEO Greg Norman.

“Importantly, The International Series will add to the Asian Tour’s backbone of established events to comprise a 25-event season, expected to represent a record-breaking combined prize-fund. Each of the 10 events will be broadcast live across the globe, with plans to attract an international field of headline talent.”

“We are setting the Asian Tour up as a powerful new force on the world golf stage,” said Greg Norman. “In my 40 years as a professional golfer, I’ve seen many parts of the world that have benefitted tremendously from golf and its growth and development. We now have the opportunity to do that in the Asia Pacific region and the Middle East with this incredible investment platform. Everyone benefits – professional players, amateurs, grassroots golf, fans, economies, communities, stakeholders. I’ve never been so optimistic about the future of the sport.”

The announcement comes on the eve of the Asian Tour’s new season and the controversial $5million Saudi International at Royal Greens Golf & Country Club. Previously a European Tour (now DP World Tour) event, the tournament makes its Asian Tour debut with the strongest field in the Tour's history. The Saudi International field features six of the top-20 players in the world are competing – including two-time winner Dustin Johnson ,   Bryson Dechambeau , Phil Mickelson , Sergio Garcia , Tommy Fleetwood , Tony Finau , Lee Westwood , Henrik Stenson , Tyrrell Hatton and many other big names.

More details of The International Series events, and other Asian Tour tournaments this year, will be made available in due course. This announcement only adds to ongoing rumours that LIV Golf Investments are pioneering a Saudi-backed Super League that is headhunting the worlds’ top players. A source has revealed the new league is linked to the recent $300 partnership with the Asian Tour, and that Greg Norman is set to be its Chairman.
