Tips for seniors for reducing the cost of travel

On this page:

Free travel vouchers, metropolitan travel, travel in regional victoria, other ways to cut your travel costs, travelling outside of victoria, other money-saving travel tips.

  • Find out about the transport benefits you receive as a Seniors Card holder, such as free travel vouchers and free weekend travel between two adjacent zones.
  • Cut your travel costs within and outside Victoria with the various hints and tips given below.

Your Victorian Seniors Card means you can enjoy discounted travel in Victoria and Australia-wide.

  • Every Seniors Card holder receives free off-peak travel vouchers to use on public transport in Victoria.
  • Register for your free vouchers at the PTV website www.ptv.vic.gov.au/vouchers External Link
  • Each voucher can be exchanged for either: a V/Line off-peak daily ticket (going out and back on the same day); two V/Line off-peak single tickets (going out on one day and back on another); a 1 Day Travel Pass for travel in Zones 1 and 2.

From 1 November 2022, the Department of Transport is introducing more booking options to make it easier to redeem your free travel and visiting a station during opening hours to redeem your voucher for a ticket is no longer the only option.

  • From 1 November 2022 Vouchers will be held electronically so you can choose to redeem vouchers at a staffed station or V/Line agent, or over the phone via the Public Transport Victoria (PTV) call centre.
  • You can choose to collect your ticket from a station or agent prior to travel or call 10 business days in advance and have your ticket posted to you.
  • And in 2023, you will also be able to redeem your vouchers online.
  • Phone 1800 800 007 or visit the PTV website www.ptv.vic.gov.au External Link for more information or to make V/Line reservations. V/Line tickets are subject to availability at off-peak times.
  • With a seniors myki you travel free on the weekend within one or two consecutive zones on all metropolitan trains, trams and buses – this includes to outlying metropolitan areas as far as Sunbury and Melton.
  • During the week, you can still access discounted rates at all times on all routes with your seniors myki.
  • If you take a trip in non-consecutive zones, or a trip of more than two zones, a fare for the whole trip will be charged.

Consider travelling by public transport in off-peak periods. It's less crowded and you still get a great discount with your Seniors Card.

  • Travel free on the weekends on V/Line commuter rail services when using myki for trips of one or two consecutive zones (for example, Woodend to Gisborne).
  • At other times, V/Line offers concession rates for Seniors Card holders through regional Victoria.
  • Take advantage of off-peak rates during quieter times.
  • Phone 1800 800 007 for more information or to pre-book tickets.
  • The V/Line website lists all its fares and routes www.vline.com.au External Link .
  • You can also travel free on regional town bus networks over the weekend in major regional cities such as Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Mildura and Warrnambool. On regional town buses where myki is not operating, show your Victorian Seniors Card to travel free on weekends.

Myki works like an electronic purse for public transport. You have to top up the card’s balance whenever it runs low on funds.

The seniors myki offers discounted rates at all times on all routes. You pay no more than the seniors daily cap (zones 1 & 2) when you travel on weekdays.

How do I get a seniors myki?

New Seniors Card program applicants receive a seniors myki for free with their Seniors Card posted with a Welcome pack.

Seniors Business Discount Card holders are not eligible to receive a free Seniors myki card upon joining the program.

Once you have your seniors myki, you should register it. There are many benefits to registering your myki, including free card replacement card if it's lost or stolen. For more information on how to register, visit the Public Transport Victoria website External Link

And you can top it up at:

  • Hundreds of shops including all 7-Eleven stores.
  • Premium Stations as listed on the PTV website External Link .
  • From myki machines at selected train stations and stops.
  • Mobile myki app using your Android smartphone. For more information visit the PTV website. External Link
  • Online at PTV website External Link .
  • By calling PTV on 1800 800 007.

seniors card weekend travel

Remember - it's a condition that you carry your Seniors Card at all times when travelling on public transport as proof of your concession entitlement.

Replacement myki

Like many other cards, myki cards do expire, so keep track of your card’s expiry date. If your myki is registered and you have an online account – find your card expiry date online. If your myki is not registered, check the expiry date at a myki machine, myki check, or by calling 1800 800 007.

Even if you're travelling for free on the weekend, on myki-enabled services you must touch on and off as normal - you won't be charged.

Support for people with a disability or health issues

  • All metropolitan trains are wheelchair accessible and low-floor trams and buses are available on some routes. Most V/Line trains and coaches can be accessed by wheelchairs. More information on accessible transport is available from PTV on 1800 800 007 or www.ptv.vic.gov.au External Link .

The world is full of wondrous places to visit, but the average American worker gets just 15 days of vacation a year after they've been on the job for five years. Even worse, only 48% of workers use all of the paid time off they do get.

When you retire, you have unlimited free time and can travel when and where you want without having to ask for time off.

As you think about retirement travel, here are 10 trips for seniors you should add to your bucket list.

seniors card weekend travel

One of the best trips for seniors is visiting the U.S. National Park System. There are more than 400 national park sites for retirement travelers to explore. While some are free to visit, others charge an entrance fee (though there are a few fee-free days every year). Seniors 62 and older can buy an annual pass for $20 or a lifetime pass for just $80. Some older adults turn the national parks into a road trip opportunity to visit numerous parks along the way.

For retirees with mobility concerns, there might be more to do than you think at national parks. Some offer free all-terrain wheelchairs and accessible trails or learning centers.

According to an AARP 2024 retirement travel survey, Europe is one of the most sought-after destinations. On a Danube riverboat tour, you could cruise through up to eight countries in Central Europe as you make your way to the Black Sea. With these cruises, you'll experience the culture, history and cuisine of incredible destinations, including Germany, Austria and Hungary.

Barcelona is an incredible choice for traveling during retirement. With the city’s location on the Balearic Sea, the coastal breezes keep the temperatures cool in the fall and spring. There’s also fresh seafood to tantalize your taste buds.

Barcelona is the capital of the Catalonia region of Spain, and it is known for its art and architecture. It was the home of the famous designer Antoni Gaudí, whose astonishing buildings dot the city, including the stunning Sagrada Familia, a light-filled, soaring cathedral (that's still a work in progress more than 100 years later).

Wine lovers can sample local wine varietals throughout the Paso Robles region of central California. Paso Robles is roughly halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, making it an easy journey for visitors from either city. This area is best known for its Cabernet Sauvignon and Bordeaux-style wines, but most wineries offer multiple types of wine for visitors to enjoy.

Nearby Hearst Castle is one of America's best-known "castles" from the early 20th century. This hilltop wonder is an experience to behold as you tour the estate and enjoy the views of the valley below. The castle offers multiple tours of different lengths and abilities, including an option for a private tour for up to six people.

While London is typically atop travelers' list when visiting the U.K., a stop in Bath gets you away from the crowds and into the history of the country. Bath is a historical city founded during the first century A.D. during the Roman Empire as a thermal spa. The city features Neoclassical architecture, including its famous Circus and Royal Crescent buildings.

Bath is also a short drive from Stonehenge, where people traveling during retirement can stop to indulge in the mysteries of the prehistoric structure and its cultural significance. Travelers who want to avoid driving can also sign up for one of the many tours that visit both attractions.

Key West is a retiree travel destination that doesn't require a passport yet feels a world away from city life. It is the last of the many islands connected by a bridge along the southernmost tip of Florida. Key West is just 90 miles from Cuba, and it is famous for its pastel homes. It is known for its coral reefs and stellar snorkeling. There are also land-based activities like its Butterfly & Nature Conservatory and the somewhat controversial Fantasy Fest.

If you're having a hard time picking one destination for retirement travel, how about a cruise that visits them all? OK, around-the-world cruises don't literally visit every destination, but they do take you on an expansive journey around the globe.

These curated cruises visit dozens of cities in different countries as you traverse multiple continents, seas and oceans. An around-the-world cruise is one of the best vacations for retirees who have free time since they typically last over 100 nights.

If you’re retired, you probably have more time to spend with family and friends or visit the places you’ve always wanted to see.

But sometimes, retirement can present seniors with budgetary constraints like fixed incomes or dwindling savings. In looking for ways to make traveling in your retirement affordable, any discounts and savings will go a long way!

But what is a “senior?”

The answer depends on who you ask. While some companies specify anyone over 50 is a senior, others say you must be 62, and still others require you to be 65. This is why it is important to check the details on any discount, program, or offer to make sure you qualify.

Below we’ve put together a guide that provides an overview of some of the best savings opportunities for seniors, as well as some tips on travel insurance.

Greyhound Bus Tour

As a senior, you are eligible for a variety of travel discounts when you start to plan your trip. By taking advantage of these savings, you may be able to afford to travel more often! Here are a few resources you can use to obtain many of the best bargains available today:

  • AARP : The American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) is a large nonprofit group focused on advocacy and support for people aged 50 and over. By visiting the website, you can join AARP for approximately $16 per year. You can then take advantage of the many travel benefits offered by this organization . Visitors can read more about this on the AARP’s Travel Benefits page, which includes advice on travel deals, travel insurance, and vacation packages.
  • AARP Travel Center by Expedia : In addition to providing information on its own site, AARP has also partnered with the online travel platform Expedia . As a result, these 2 organizations can provide you a comprehensive travel search experience. The Travel Center allows users to search for flights, hotels, rental cars, cruises, and other activities that are eligible for AARP discounts.
  • Priceline Senior Deals : The travel platform Priceline also offers a senior search function for tracking down special deals. Visitors should take a look at the Senior Getaways calendar , which displays the dates when senior discounts are available.
  • Avis , Hertz , and Alamo : Up to 25% off for AARP members.
  • Budget : Up to 20% off for AARP members, 10% off for non-AARP members.
  • Dollar : Those over 50 can get 10% off.
  • Enterprise : AARP members get 5% off.
  • National : Up to 30% discount for AARP members.
  • Amtrak : Passengers aged 62+ can get a 15% discount on most fares.
  • Greyhound : If you are over 52, you can get a 5% discount on tickets.

Although senior discounts on flights were common in the past, many airlines have stopped offering these special rates. If you can’t find a discount on the flight you want, you could try to concentrate on deals for other parts of your trip, such as meals or lodging. Here are a couple airlines that may occasionally have senior rates:

  • United – Senior Travelers : This United page explains how travelers 65+ can occasionally access flight discounts. It also discusses how to make flying more convenient and comfortable, which is especially useful if you or your travel companions happen to have disabilities or mobility issues.
  • Southwest – Seniors : According to Southwest, the airline has senior fares for both domestic and international flights. They apply to people aged 65+ and require age verification through a government-issued ID. The Southwest Seniors page provides further information on how to access these special fares.
  • Delta : Offers senior discounts in specific areas, but only if you call here to find them.

Hot Tip: Don’t forget to check out these great credit cards for seniors and retirees .

Unlike the dwindling flight discounts, hotel discounts for seniors are still going strong. If you are planning to stay in a hotel soon, be sure to look into these savings:

  • Choice Hotel Senior Rates : On this page, you can find information on the discounted hotel rates available to people 60 older. By using this discount, you are also eligible for other Choice Hotel programs, such as Choice Privilege and Choice Airline Rewards .
  • Marriott Senior Discount : A senior discount is available at over 4,000 Marriott hotels . This page shows you how to book cheaper rates if you are at least 62 years old. Rooms booked at the senior rate are also eligible for Marriott Bonvoy points, so you may want to check out that program too.
  • Best Western Senior Hotel Discounts : You can take advantage of the special rate offered by Best Western, which applies to those who are 55 and older. Certain Best Western hotels may provide extra perks like a complimentary room upgrade, continental breakfast, early check-in, or late check-out, so be sure to ask about that when you book your room.
  • Golden Tulip : On this website, you can search for senior deals valid at a variety of Golden Tulip hotels around the world. Senior deals are available to travelers at least 62 years old.

Cruise Ship

Cruises are usually all-inclusive, which makes it relaxing and easy to travel to those faraway places you’ve always wanted to see. Cruise travel is available to everyone – even those with reduced mobility, thanks to planned itineraries, wheelchair-accessible common areas, and activities you can enjoy at your own pace.

For today’s active seniors, there are also plenty of chances to participate in many cultural and leisure activities. Here are some cruise resources you can explore:

  • Best Price Cruises – Senior Discounts : Best Price Cruises is a travel platform dedicated exclusively to cruises. You can search for cruises by destination, cruise line, ship, trip length, and departure date. The site has filters for all kinds of travel rates, including senior rates.
  • Vacations To Go – Senior Discounts : Vacations To Go is a cruise agency catering to all ages, but it also has a special page for travelers 55 and older. You can also choose preferred regions and specific cruise lines to see the senior discounts available.
  • Carnival Cruise Deals for Seniors : By going directly to the website of Carnival Cruise Lines, you can search discounted cruise fares for travelers at least 55 years old. There is a wide selection of search filters, including destination port, arrival port, length of cruise, type of cruise, and ship.
  • Grand Circle Cruise Line : If you are a cruise enthusiast who wants a different kind of cruise experience, Grand Circle Cruise Line offers trips that are more specialized than those offered by the larger cruise lines. On the company’s website, you can discover small ship cruises and river cruises that take between 25 and 100 passengers. This reduced size suits seniors who want a quieter cruise experience.

If you are a senior who loves to travel, you’re not alone! There are a number of blog writers who are sharing their travel experiences and tips, including the following:

  • Life Part 2 : Senior blogger Jonathan Look gives readers a glimpse into his life of travel with this blog. Jonathan sold all of his belongings so he could set off to experience the voyages and adventures he had always dreamed about. His blog isn’t exclusively about budget travel, but he does address the subject quite often. In fact, there is an entire section called “What Does It Cost to Live for a Month in,” where senior travelers on a budget can gauge the affordability of their desired destinations across the world.
  • The Travelling Boomer : Paul Marshman is a semi-retired news reporter and editor who wants to visit every country in the world in his lifetime. Paul’s eye for interesting stories has led him to create a travel blog that is both exciting and informative. On his blog, he shows off his journalistic side by featuring a lot of practical tips and reports. In his cruising section, he discusses cruise deals, popular cruises, and alternative cruises from the perspective of an active baby boomer who is passionate about travel.
  • Adventures of Empty Nesters : Suzanne Stavert started this blog to “bring together a global community of people who don’t plan to spend this valuable time sitting on the couch.” Each year, she and her husband Craig plan their travel adventures based on the destinations they haven’t seen yet. This can include staying in luxury hotels and eating at famous chef-inspired eateries in both the U.S. and abroad.
  • Hole in the Donut Cultural Travel : Having traveled to over 75 different countries, Barbara Weibel is an excellent example of a senior traveler who loves to go off the beaten path. After stagnating in unfulfilling jobs, Barbara now uses perpetual travel as a way to immerse herself in different cultures and grow as a person. Her destinations have included Nepal, Zambia, Peru, and many other faraway countries. If you relish unique cultural experiences, you’ll be inspired by Barbara’s blog.

Group tours can offer you the opportunity to discover new things while still having the comfort of a planned itinerary with other travelers. The following tour companies focus specifically on the senior market:

  • Seniortours : On the Seniortours website, you can discover a large number of group tours for older travelers all over the world. You can also review numerous descriptions of tours that go through the mountains, sunny shores, wine country, scenic southwest, and more. The website also provides travel news and tips for seniors.
  • Grand European Travel : This tour company offers discounts for AARP members, so participating seniors can visit the website to find out what the latest deals are. Despite the name, Grand European Travel also organizes tours in the U.S. and Asia. You can learn more about their tours on the company’s website, where there is also a variety of travel advice.
  • Adventures Abroad – Senior Tour s : Adventures Abroad offers travel tours made up of small groups of seniors covering 120 different countries. On the website, you can view 350 itineraries that feature culture, hiking, and everything in between. To make it easier to choose an itinerary suited to your abilities and desires, Adventures Abroad rates each itinerary by the level of physical activity.

Travel planning with map

  • Flying Companions : Provides travel companions to accompany seniors who don’t want to travel alone, have flying fears, or deal with physical challenges. • LiveTrekker : You can create your own digital diary using this app by pinning videos, audio clips, photographs, and more to your map wherever you are. Track all your trips using the integrated GPS, which also measures altitude and speed.

As you can see, there are a number of discounts, programs, apps, and sources of information for seniors who travel. Because discount programs change often and new ones are being added all the time, always ask about them when booking or calling for more information.

It can’t hurt to ask, and you may be pleasantly surprised! By saving a little here and a lot there, you may be able to afford to travel much more than you ever imagined.

How to Find Senior Discounts for Budget Travel

Senior discounts for budget travel exist across a wide spectrum of opportunities, but many aren't obvious -- they'll require some looking.

Senior Pass From the U.S. National Park Service

Let's start with a visit to a U.S. national park , already a good buy for travelers of all ages.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents age 62 and older can purchase either a lifetime Senior Pass  or an annual pass to U.S. national parks.

There are a few things for which the pass will not pay: fees charged by park concessions are not covered; same for some recreation permits you might need in certain parks. Those with questions about Senior Pass will generally find that even when the exemptions are noted, this is still something that will pay for itself with one visit to a park that charges admission.

Rail Discounts

Rail Europe offers senior discounts for travelers age 60 and older "for certain passes and specific trains," and generally only on first-class tickets. So in some cases, you might find it cheaper to forgo the senior discount in favor of a second-class seat. Still, it pays to check into whatever senior discounts might be available for your itinerary and class preference.

Amtrak offers a 15 percent discount on their lowest fares for anyone at least age 62. If the itinerary crosses the Canadian border and involves a VIA RailCanada train, the age restriction falls to 60. Look for the senior fare option on all of VIA's ticket options.

Another Canadian rail line, Ontario Northland , routinely discounts any trip by 10 percent for those at least 60 years of age.

Airline Discounts

With corporate belt-tightening in recent years, senior discounts on airfares have declined . But airlines still offer some consideration to senior passengers, although the extent of the savings can vary quite a bit. The best advice: shop first on price, and be sure to type in your age status when making the reservation. Here are two examples of what is offered:

Southwest offers fully refundable Senior Fares for travelers at least 65 years old. Some seating limitations or other restrictions might be applied.

Air France offers discounts for those age 60 and older when flying "within metropolitan France." The tickets can be changed or refunded with no penalty.

Travel Discounts through AARP

Travel is not the top concern of most seniors. Health care and financial stability probably outrank visiting the world's best destinations.

But travel does find its way onto the list of priorities, and it shouldn't be surprising that groups formed to lobby for senior adults would also work to offer some travel discounts. The best-known example is the AARP, once known as the American Association of Retired Persons. The name change came because the organization's focus isn't limited to the concerns of retirees. In fact, membership has long been open to anyone at least 50 years old.

AARP membership can be purchased for one year, three years and for five years. Travel discounts are offered at more than 40 hotel chains and six car rental firms. Discounts on tours, cruises, roadside assistance plans, and even vacation rentals are included.

Although self-described as non-partisan, AARP is a powerful lobbying organization in Washington D.C. Undoubtedly, AARP advocates positions that some of its members would oppose. Be aware that some budget travelers decline membership offers for this reason and seek discounts elsewhere.

The organization's stands are not secret, so take a look at the AARP website and decide for yourself if membership fits with your convictions.

National Discounts

Some discounts are initiated by governments. For example, Europe offers a number of discounts for seniors.

In Great Britain , for example, seniors get reduced admission prices for Windsor Castle , Tower of London , St. Paul's Cathedral and Westminster Abbey , among others.

In Spain, a recent promotion called Golden Days Parador included a 30 percent discount on a standard double room throughout the year at the government-owned Paradores , but certain blackout dates were applied. What are Paradores ? The government defines them this way: "hotels for luxury accommodation in Castles, Palaces, Fortresses, Convents, Monasteries, and other historic buildings. There are also modern Spanish hotels, built in traditional style, in areas of outstanding beauty."

Hotel Discounts

If you want to find the senior discounts for major hotel chains , you might have to dig a little. Click "site map" on the home page and then look for senior discount or something similar such as senior rates.

Many of the chains will offer discounts in connection with membership in organizations such as AARP, but others extend the lower rates to everyone in the age category. Motel 6 will discount room rates 10 percent for guests who are at least 60 years of age.

Marriott extends a 15 percent discount to travelers age 62 or older at 3,600 locations worldwide seven days a week. As with many of these corporate hotel discounts, the Marriott offer is subject to availability. It is capped at a maximum of two rooms per stay.

Restaurant Discounts

Many parts of the United States feature regional discount cards that seniors can present at participating businesses for immediate discounts. In Ohio, for example, there is the Golden Buckeye Card , which is available to all state residents at least 60 years old. Among the 20,000 businesses that honor the card are restaurants.

National restaurant chains are also frequently discounting senior tabs. For example, the International House of Pancakes, Burger King, Wendy's, Shoney's and Chili's all offer 10 percent discounts to seniors in the 55-60 age range. Taco Bell gives free beverages to seniors at participating locations.

Obviously, the terms of these offers will vary by location, and some franchisees might not participate. But don't be embarrassed about asking if any senior discounts are in effect. If the answer is "no," what have you lost?

Car Rental Discounts

Car rentals should be searched first on the basis of price. Then look for any discounts offered based on age. Why proceed in this manner? Because at many of the major companies, the prices will vary more than the senior discount offers.

As with hotels, some companies will base their discounts on AARP membership . Most of the major companies will discount rates 20-25 percent for AARP travelers who present their valid membership cards at the time of check-in.

Some won't make any distinction beyond an age eligibility requirement.

The Best Trips to Take in Your 60s

From a train journey through the Canadian Rockies to a tour of the pyramids in Egypt, these are the top vacations for seniors over 60.

seniors card weekend travel

David Raymer/Getty Images

With 61 being the average age of retirement in the U.S. , your seventh decade might just be the time to explore the places you've always dreamed of but could never visit. Sure, health and financial situations vary greatly and can create limitations when it comes to traveling, but there are still plenty of getaways to suit just about any physical ability or budget.

It's time to start ticking off some of those bucket list items, whether that means booking a beach destination for some rest and relaxation or embarking on the adventure of a lifetime in a faraway place (an African safari, you say?).

From cruises to train trips to glamping experiences, here are the best trips for travelers over 60.

A River Cruise

For first-time cruisers, a river cruise is a safe starting point. Rivers such as the Danube (Central and Southeastern Europe), the Rhine (starting in the Swiss Alps), and the Seine (in northern France) are popular because they flow right through picturesque and historic cities, allowing for a variety of shore excursions.

But you don't have to go abroad to sail along a scenic river. In the U.S., the Mississippi — flowing from northern Minnesota all the way down to the Gulf of Mexico — is a popular option, with three main cruise lines operating both contemporary boats and old-style paddle wheelers. Less trodden but equally charming are the Columbia and Snake Rivers in the Pacific Northwest, and even the Hudson River in New York.

A Journey Across the Sea

Veritable seaborne cities, some of the largest cruise ships are equipped with restaurants, theaters, pools, and casinos to keep guests entertained and comfortable while sailing the ocean blue. The itinerary options are near infinite, with some lines circumnavigating the Mediterranean and others embarking on maritime journeys in the North Atlantic, South Pacific, Asia, and beyond. We recommend booking with Holland America, Cunard, or Royal Caribbean for big-ship cruising in optimal comfort. And if you've always imagined making a classic transatlantic crossing and have the time, you might check off a bucket list item with a week on the famed Queen Mary 2.

A Cruise Aboard a Midsize Ship

Midsize cruise ships that carry between 250 and 600 passengers offer many of the same amenities that large ships offer, but they can also stop at ports that can't accommodate colossal vessels–the towns and villages on Alaskan Dream Cruises' trip through the Inside Passage , for example . Also check out Paul Gauguin Cruises' South Pacific itineraries and Windstar's trips in the Caribbean and the Mediterranean — both options available to just a few hundred passengers at a time.

A Ride on the Orient Express

The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express , a rolling homage to perhaps the most famous rail service in history, carries passengers aboard luxuriously restored 1920s carriages across Europe — and across time. The Classic Route , which runs between Paris and Venice, takes passengers through picturesque European cities, towns, and farmlands in the comfort of private cabins or grand suites, with elegant dining and bar cars to enjoy along the way. Make the journey even more fun and dress to impress on this nostalgic (and iconic) train ride.

An All-American Train Trip

The California Zephyr, an Amtrak train that travels from Chicago to the Bay Area , passes through some of the most incredible natural scenery in the western United States, including the Great Plains, the Rocky Mountains, and the Sierra Nevada. As a bonus, it's a decidedly convenient way to cross the country, especially for those with time to spare and a preference not to fly.

Almost an equal distance but traveling a more northern route is the Empire Builder , also by Amtrak. It connects Seattle and Chicago, winding through the Rockies and along parts of the famous Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail. For longer trips like these (40-plus hours), make sure to book a bedroom or roomette for comfort.

Looking for something shorter? The 35-hour Coast Starlight route traverses the West Coast between Los Angeles and Seattle, offering spectacular views of the Pacific shoreline, ancient redwood forests, and snow-capped mountains, all best seen from the Sightseer Lounge car.

The Canadian Rockies by Rail

If it's majestic mountains, icy-blue waters, dramatic canyons, and miles upon miles of evergreen forest you're keen to see, the revered Rocky Mountaineer is your ticket. There are four itineraries to choose from, but the most popular one is the First Passage to the West, traveling from Vancouver to Banff and Lake Louise (and vice versa). Passengers can admire the surroundings from the comfort of glass-topped observation cars or soak in the fresh mountain air from outdoor viewing platforms.

The Galápagos

Since this archipelago is off the coast of Ecuador, you'll need to travel to either Quito or Guayaquil to start your journey. Small ships or yachts are ideal for getting close to nature, and with most you can kayak, snorkel, or dive when not simply observing the resident iguanas, giant tortoises, penguins, sea lions, and numerous bird species from the comfort of the deck. The vessels are great for day trips, but you can also opt for a live-aboard experience or a stay at one of the hotels on one of the few inhabited islands. In any case, planning well ahead of your trip to the Galápagos is important because of limitations on the number of visitors.

An African Safari

Neem Ngelime/Travel + Leisure

For many, an African safari is the ultimate vacation and the first great adventure considered after retirement. Planning one, however, can be overwhelming with the number of options, from which tour company to book to how much to spend to where to stay. Accommodations range from luxurious glamping sites to rustic lodges and tent camps — all perfectly comfortable for the over-60 set. Special interests such as seeing the Big Five, spotting certain birds, or cultural experiences should be considered as well. Small group hikes or jeep rides are good options for an intimate experience. Research and planning are key in creating your perfect safari vacation.

A Northern Lights Escape

Many people hope to see the aurora borealis in their lifetimes, but the northern lights are notoriously elusive. Their appearance is spectacular but unpredictable, influenced by weather, the time of year, and solar activity. There are many great destinations for seeing the Northern Lights : Guided tours in Alaska, northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and Finland accommodate seekers of greatest nature's light show. The RTA, Metra, and Cook County are partnering to extend reduced fares to Metra riders experiencing low incomes regionwide through the Access Pilot Program . All recipients of Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, living in the counties of Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, and Will are eligible to apply for an Access permit, which will allow the purchases of reduced fare tickets, at GetAccess.org . The program will run from Feb. 1, 2024 to July 31, 2025. Show your Access Card to a conductor to buy a reduced fare One-Way Ticket onboard a train. When selecting tickets or passes to buy on the Ventra app or via a ticket vending machine, look for the Access program under Reduced Fare Tickets; you do not need the Access Card to purchase the ticket or pass but you may be asked to show your Access Card to the conductor when using the ticket or pass.

U.S. Military Fares

Military personnel may purchase reduced fare tickets provided they present proper military identification indicating they are on active duty. These privileges are extended to all branches of the military: Marines, Air Force, Army, Navy and Coast Guard.

Student Fares

Full time students enrolled in a grade school or high school can purchase reduced fare tickets and passes. College students are not included in the program. Student fares are in effect at all times. When purchasing a ticket, students must present a valid letter of certification from their school (on school stationery) or present a valid school I.D. (both are valid through the end of the calendar year) bearing the student's name, school name and authorized signature. Student identification card or letter of certification must be displayed along with the ticket to the conductor. Failure to do so will result in full fare payment. Student tickets are not transferable. Any questions concerning the above may be directed to Metra Passenger Services at 312-322-6777 .

Home-schooled Students

All fare policies concerning standard student fares also apply to home-schooled students. To meet documentation requirements, the student must present a letter with the name and address of the person providing the home schooling as teacher/principal at the top, signed and notarized. Click here to download form .

Children's Weekday Fares

Children ages 7 to 11 save 50 percent over One-Way fares. Children under 7 ride free when accompanied by a fare-paying adult (up to three children free per adult). Under no circumstances will children under 7 years of age be permitted to travel alone.

Family Fares

On weekends and select holidays, kids ride FREE with Metra's Family Fares. Up to three children age 11 and under ride free with each fare-paying adult. Purchase a ticket or use your Monthly Pass as the adult fare. Family Cars are available on weekends and non-rush hour weekday trains. Why Go To St. Petersburg, FL

Holding the Guinness World Record for the most consecutive days of sunshine, St. Petersburg is appropriately nicknamed "The Sunshine City." The city provides visitors with a unique blend of traditional beach getaway and urban flavor. The white, sandy beaches offer views of spectacular sunsets and the 137 parks invite travelers to enjoy a host of activities, including hiking, camping and kayaking. An ongoing creative renaissance also promises an extensive cultural experience, whether it's through the world-class Dalí Museum or the Museum of Fine Arts .

And every year, more than 1,000 events are held in the city – everything from St. Anthony's Triathlon to Florida's largest Pride celebration. With all that it has to offer, the sunshine-infused city is a popular destination for visitors all ages: families will love the relaxing outdoors and teeming wildlife, and the younger set will find plenty to do downtown, including the lively nightlife.

St. Petersburg, FL Travel Tips

Best months to visit.

The best time to visit St. Petersburg is from March to May, when the weather is comfortably warm and a plethora of outdoor events make the city come alive. You'll find more affordable room rates from June to November, but the threat of hurricanes is imminent and the weather can often be scorching. The temperature cools down significantly for the winter months.

What You Need to Know

Dogs are welcome  Feel free to bring your four-legged friend when visiting St. Petersburg. The city features six dog parks, a lengthy dog beach at the  Fort de Soto Park  and a dog-friendly  Saturday Morning Market .

Theme parks are a short drive away  Don't fret – you can still enjoy Florida's thrilling theme parks while visiting St. Petersburg.  Busch Gardens  (near Tampa ) is about 30 miles northeast and  Walt Disney World  is about 70 miles northeast.

Enjoy the wildlife  The Sunshine City is home to an abundance of wildlife, so keep an eye out and enjoy the scenery. Dolphins are seen year-round, while manatees appear in the wintertime. Beachgoers should do the "stingray shuffle" as they wade into the surf to avoid stepping on buried stingrays. Plus, the city features the most diverse water bird colonies in North America.

Call before you go  Some attractions will close completely for major city events – such as the Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg in March – so you'll want to double check the attractions' hours before you visit.

How to Save Money in St. Petersburg, FL

Invest in a GO Card  If you plan on getting around the city by bus, you may want to use a reloadable GO Card. These can be purchased on the bus with exact change. Regular fares cost $2.25. You can also pay for fares with exact change.

Pick the right beach  Sunshine City features plenty of beaches but almost none of them offer free parking. Municipal lots, such as those offered by Treasure Island, often offer the best prices. If you'd rather not bring your own set of wheels, the Suncoast Beach Trolley is an inexpensive shuttle that runs between the area's beaches and offers connecting service to downtown.

Indulge in free events  The city hosts more than 1,000 events each year. Check the St. Petersburg Calendar to take advantage of the ones that are free while you're in town.

What to Eat

As a city on Florida's Gulf Coast, seafood is a must in Sunshine City. Make sure to visit 400 Beach Seafood and Tap House and The Maritana Grille (at The Don CeSar ) for exquisite seafood dishes like fresh oysters, coconut shrimp, tuna tartare and crispy calamari. And if you're not a fan of fishy food, there's plenty else in the city to eat as well. Beach Drive and Central Avenue feature alfresco dining. If you'd like a change of scenery, the Saturday Morning Market is a great place to pick up fresh produce, and food trucks all over the city offer fantastic street fare.

Getting Around St. Petersburg, FL

The best way to get around St. Petersburg is by car. The roads are easy to navigate and parking is inexpensive, except in downtown lots during sporting events. Within the downtown area, many attractions are within walking distance of one another, so if you're staying in the city, getting around by foot is another easy way to see St. Petersburg. You can also explore with the help of public transportation – buses and trolleys run throughout and the fare is relatively inexpensive.

To visit St. Petersburg, you can fly into St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE), located about 12 miles north of downtown, or larger Tampa International Airport (TPA), located about 20 miles northeast of downtown. Though buses run between St. Pete-Clearwater airport and the city, the travel time can be more than triple what it is by car. So, the most convenient way to reach St. Petersburg (from both airports) is by either renting a car or taking a cab.

Fort De Soto Park features 7 miles of waterfront that provides breathtaking views of the sunset.

Bringing generations together, one Intrepid traveler at a time

Whether you’re a retiree looking for your next big adventure or just think it’s time to see more of the world now that you’ve been around the block a few times, traveling with us means discovering a destination with expert local leaders who know it best. Join a small group of like-minded people as you check out hidden noodle bars, fascinating galleries, and real-life experiences you won’t find on a search engine. With a range of trip styles (from Premium to Basix) and a balance of social activities and ‘you’ time, our trips are for every curious and adventure-hungry traveler – no seriously, as far as we’re concerned, age is just a number.

Stuffy coaches, flag-touting tour guides and ‘seeing the sights’ isn’t our vibe. We prefer culturally rich experiences – led by a local – that take you behind the scenes of a destination. Our itineraries are packed with unique insights into local life. We're talking hands-on pastry-making classes with local Macedonian women, watching a traditional dance performance on the dunes in Pushkar or sleeping in a lush eco-resort in the Amazon.

We’ve found that it’s not always about the places you go but the people you meet along the way. Our trips are designed for people of all ages and with all sorts of life stories. With an average group size of 10, you'll get to know each other beyond the pleasantries over long dinner conversations and shared experiences. With a little luck, the friendships you make on your trip may last long after you’ve unpacked your suitcase at home.

As exciting as traveling is, it often involves a fair bit of planning. While we're sure you're well equipped to handle any situation, the beauty of traveling with us means we'll do the heavy lifting and take care of the nitty-gritty details so you can focus on what you're here to do: travel! From navigating border crossings to booking bus tickets, bridging language barriers to cultural dos and don'ts, sit back and enjoy yourself while your leader takes care of everything.

We understand that people travel for different reasons. That’s why we’ve created a range of  travel themes and styles  to suit every Intrepid traveler. From our Basix style with simple accommodation and plenty of free time to our Premium trips featuring our best stays, experiences and leaders (with our Original and Comfort styles in between), choose what suits you and prepare for an unforgettable experience.

Who are Intrepid travelers?

Intrepid travelers are connected more by attitude than age. They’re a friendly, open-minded and curious bunch, and many elect to travel solo. Our small groups are a mix of genders and ages between 18 and 70, with like-minded travelers from all over the world.

Are there age restrictions on your trips?

For the majority of our trips (excluding family trips), the minimum age for travelers is 15. An adult must accompany all children under 18.

Our overland trips have a minimum age of 18.

Kiddos younger than 15 can join us on our family trips and Short Break Adventures , but make sure to check each trip for its minimum age.

Most trips don’t have a maximum age limit, but a self-assessment form is required for all travelers 70 years and over.

How many people will be on my trip?

Good things come in small packages, which is why we keep our group sizes to a minimum. Small groups allow us to remain flexible with itineraries, use public transportation wherever we can and visit communities without intimidating the locals.

Most Intrepid trips run with an intimate group of 12-16 travelers, though they usually average around 10 people.

Our overland trips use purpose-built vehicles that can carry up to 24 travelers. Group sizes are displayed in the description of each trip.

Is it okay that I'm travelling alone?

Absolutely! The beauty of the Intrepid style of travel is that many of our travelers join because they are traveling solo and want to meet and share experiences with like-minded people.

Learn more about solo travel

I have a disability – can I join an Intrepid trip?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. Please carefully consider whether you are physically and mentally able to complete the itinerary you have chosen, recognizing that on many trips, you will be required to carry your own bags and use public transport.

Where we can, we will make reasonable adjustments to the operation of our trips to facilitate the requirements of disabled travelers – such as booking ground floor accommodation or having our leaders communicate important directions in writing as well as verbally. Many travelers with disabilities have been able to enjoy our trips by traveling with a friend or companion who can assist with specific needs. If joining a group trip is not practical, we may be able to provide you with a private departure. Please contact us for further information on any of our itineraries.

Learn more about accessible travel with Intrepid

Do I need to buy travel insurance?

Travel insurance is compulsory on all our trips if you’re traveling internationally. We require that at a minimum you are covered for medical expenses including emergency repatriation, but minimum coverage may differ from trip to trip, so make sure you check the Travel Insurance section in your Essential Trip Information. You will not be permitted to join the group until your leader has sighted your insurance policy number and the insurance company's 24-hour emergency contact number – it’s really important there are no barriers to getting emergency assistance for you.

For travelers who reside within the European Union, Switzerland or the USA, the requirement to purchase travel insurance cannot be compulsory. However, the purchase of travel insurance is still highly recommended, and travelers from these regions who decline travel insurance when traveling outside their home region must sign a Travel Insurance Waiver Form at the Group Meeting, recognizing personal responsibility for emergency medical and repatriation costs should they arise.

Will I have my own room?

It's your call. Rooming on our trips is organized on a twin-share basis, but most of our trips also have the option to pay an extra fee for your own room. Just let us know at the time of booking and we'll arrange it for you.

For twin-share rooms, we pair up solo travellers with another traveller of the same gender as per the gender marker on each of their passports. As a responsible tour operator, we strive to create a safe and inclusive environment for everyone. In the case that your gender identity differs from what's indicated on your passport, please  contact us  so that we can discuss rooming options with you.

On a small selection of itineraries some accommodations are booked on an open-gender, multi-share basis. In those instances it will clearly be stated in your Essential Trip Information.

How does group time work?

Whether you’re traveling alone or with a partner, our trips have a set itinerary. But within that there’s time set aside for your own exploration (if you want to – no pressure). Depending on how you're feeling, you may want to have some downtime, ask your guide for a few tips then head out alone, or hang out with the group and see where the day takes you.

With a little luck, the friendships you make on your trip may last long after you've unpacked your suitcase at home.

  23. 3 days in St.Petersburg
