South Korea & Japan: Seoul to Tokyo

15 days   |   19 days with Hokkaido & Tokyo extension

4.5 out of 5 stars

Two sought-after countries. Twice the cultural cachet.

On the global pop culture scene, South Korea’s star has steadily risen in recent years. That’s thanks in part to sensationally popular Korean TV shows and films, foods, beauty trends, and pop bands that have taken the world by storm—and piqued travelers’ curiosity about the country in the process. Korea’s easterly neighbor, Japan, offers up rich history, cultural immersion, and impeccable hospitality that’s always in high demand. Spend two weeks getting to know these neighboring Asian nations, from their neon-lit cities to their rural villages to their serene, natural landscapes. If you want to venture a little farther off the beaten path, extend your tour and explore Hokkaido, Japan’s mountainous, northernmost island.

  • We recommend having at least two blank passport pages for entry stamps.
  • Beginning January 1, 2025, U.S. and Canadian passport holders must purchase an individual visa from the South Korean government’s Electronic Travel Authority website www.k-eta.go.kr prior to departure.
  • If you are not a U.S. or Canadian citizen, you must contact South Korea’s and Japan’s consulates for your specific entry requirements.
  • You can see the most up-to-date entry requirements for the destination(s) you’ll visit on tour by going to goaheadtours.com/entry-requirements and searching the code SKJ.
  • Round-trip flights booked through Go Ahead Tours arrive in Seoul and depart from Tokyo.
  • Transfers to and from the airport at the beginning and end of the tour are included for travelers who purchased their flights through Go Ahead Tours. Travelers who booked their own flights are responsible for securing their own airport transfers.
  • When you arrive in Seoul, a Go Ahead representative will be waiting for you in the arrivals hall with a Go Ahead sign or a sign with your name(s). If you don’t see a representative immediately, please be patient and stay in the arrivals area. They may be assisting another traveler who has also just arrived and will be back shortly.

Physical Activity Level

This is a high physical activity-level tour. You can expect to be on the move on a regular basis throughout the course of the tour.

Tour Pacing

This is a brisk-paced tour. The pace of a tour itinerary considers how often you’ll switch hotels, the amount of planned daily activities, and how you’ll get from place to place. You can expect:

  • One 1-night stay
  • Most days full of included activities (more if you add excursions)
  • Most transportation by motor coach, some by train and flight
  • About 4 hours of bus time daily

Walking, Terrain & Physical Requirements

  • Travelers should be prepared to walk 2-3 miles per day—this includes city streets, cobblestones, stairs, and hills.
  • Stone and marble walkways may be slippery even when dry.
  • Travelers must be able to walk up and down 108 stairs to access the Haedong
  • Yonggungsa Temple complex during the sightseeing tour of Busan.
  • Travelers should be healthy enough to participate in all included walks without assistance.
  • Please Note: Adding optional excursions may increase the total amount of walking on tour.

Climate Considerations

  • Temperatures range from 40sF in winter to low-80sF in summer, with occasional heatwaves in the summer months (June-September).
  • Summer is the rainy season in South Korea and Japan and travelers should expect hot, humid days.

Physical Activity & Tour Pace Questions

  • Go Ahead Tours and the Tour Director who accompanies your group are unable to provide special mobility or luggage handling assistance to travelers on tour. The responsibility of the Tour Director is to ensure the group enjoys a smooth and informative journey, and they can’t be relied on to provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • This tour moves at a reasonable pace to avoid missing scheduled stops. The rest of the group cannot miss any scheduled activities because of the needs of an individual.
  • Due to the pace and physical activity level of this tour, mobility aids such as wheelchairs or walkers will be difficult to use and are not recommended. Please notify Go Ahead Tours before your departure if you plan to bring these on tour with you.
  • If you have mobility concerns or tour pacing questions, please visit our Help Center or send a message to our Customer Experience Team.
  • This tour includes various modes of transportation, including planes, trains and private motor coach. Some modes of transportation will have raised platforms or steps and often not provide access to ramps or lifts.
  • High-speed train transfers from Seoul to Gyeongju, Fukuoka to Kyoto, and Kyoto to Tokyo, as well as a flight from Busan to Fukuoka, are included in the price of your tour. The tour extension also includes a round-trip flight between Tokyo and Sapporo.
  • All other included transportation on this tour is by private motor coach.
  • Train stations typically operate similarly to airports: Security measures, such as baggage and body scanners, are common. Additionally, platforms are often spread across large distances and require travelers to carry their luggage up and down escalators or stairs. Porterage services aren’t offered and storage space is extremely limited. Please keep in mind that trains may only stop at each station for a few minutes; quick boarding and deboarding may be imperative.
  • Please note that our travelers are limited to one checked bag and one carry-on bag per person due to storage limitations on motor coaches and trains.
  • Some airlines may impose additional charges if you choose to check baggage or exceed baggage size and weight restrictions. Be advised that you are responsible for any baggage fees incurred on all flights.
  • Contact your airline(s) for baggage size and weight restrictions for your flights.
  • Make sure you label your baggage and keep valuables, medication, and documents in your carry-on bag.
  • Travelers must be able to manage their luggage throughout tour; porters aren’t guaranteed at hotels or airports.
  • Luggage storage on trains is extremely limited, and only hand luggage is allowed. Larger luggage will be shipped to each hotel and typically arrives the following day so an overnight bag is recommended.
  • We recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
  • A sturdy pair of walking shoes or sneakers is recommended for sightseeing.
  • You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance.
  • It’s preferable not to visit churches or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders. Entrance may be denied on this basis.
  • We recommend packing a universal adapter, as well as a voltage converter if you plan on using a hairdryer or other device without a built-in converter.
  • In case of emergencies, we also recommend packing your medical insurance card in your carry-on.
  • Go Ahead handpicks every hotel you’ll stay at, striking a balance between comfort, location, and local charm.
  • Specific properties will vary based on your departure date, but are typically three-to-four-star hotels; always include private bathrooms; and usually have in-room safes for valuables. Additionally, your hotels will have Wi-Fi, but access may be limited to common areas. There may also not be elevators.
  • Unfortunately, we can’t guarantee that your accommodations will have laundry services or facilities. We recommend checking directly with your hotels once they’ve been confirmed, about 30 days prior to departure.
  • Some hotels on this tour are situated on narrow streets; as such, our buses can’t drop you off right out front. In these instances, you’ll have to walk your luggage to the property, no more than a few blocks.
  • Please be advised that the air conditioning in Asian hotels and buildings is often not as strong or cool as what you might be used to in the U.S. or Canada.
  • Japan operates on 100 volts and uses a Type A plug, the same as in the U.S.
  • South Korea operates on 220 volts and uses Type C and F plugs.
  • Specific accommodations will vary based on your departure date.
  • Onsens, or hot spring baths, are a huge part of the Japanese lifestyle. With more than 3,600 hot springs across the country, locals and visitors alike make visiting an onsen a priority. Guests should be aware of onsen etiquette before visiting.
  • Guests will undress and leave their belongings in the locker room before entering the bathing room. Some onsens are starting to offer policies for the more modest guest, but they are still not common.
  • Guests must wash and rinse themselves completely before entering a shared baths. Be mindful of otherwise while washing yourself so as not to spray others in the bathing room.
  • A small white bathing towel will sometimes be provided or available to rent, and are used as a cover-up, to wash your body, and dry yourself. Shampoo and soap are commonly provided, but many guests bring their own.
  • Keep your bathing towel with you at all times. Most guests fold the towel and keep it near them while in the baths, or keep it folded up on top of their heads. The bathing towel must never touch the bath water.
  • Hair should be worn up and should not your towel or the water.
  • Onsens are a relaxing and tranquil experience, be sure to speak quietly and be respectful of others who are relaxing. There is no swimming, diving, or running in the baths.
  • You may soak, exit, and reenter the baths at your leisure. It is recommended you don't spend more than 30 minutes in the baths.
  • Dry off completely before entering the locker room to change back into your clothes.
  • Be sure to check an onsens tattoo policy before visiting. While many onsens are becoming more relaxed about tattoos, and some offer cover-up patches or private baths for those with tattoos, there are still many that do not allow guests with tattoos. While most people in Japan do not have an issue with tattoos themselves, many establishments keep conservative business practices surrounding tattoos being visible.
  • Excursions are available for purchase prior to departure, and most excursions will be available for purchase while you are on tour directly through your mobile app for an additional $10 USD.
  • We recommend purchasing excursions at least 3 days prior to your tour departure. Please note some excursions have advance booking deadlines. Check your tour itinerary for more information to ensure you don’t miss the deadline to add them.
  • Optional excursions may be canceled on tour due to reasons like low enrollment, weather or unexpected closures. If an excursion you signed up for is canceled by Go Ahead Tours, you will be refunded the full cost of the excursion. Please note it may take up to 60 days for your refund to be processed.
  • Your Tour Director may offer their own optional excursions which can only be purchased on tour via cash (in local currency).
  • At least 60 days prior to departure, check with your doctor or healthcare provider for the latest updates and entry requirements, or visit the Center for Disease Control and Prevention website at cdc.gov .
  • If you have dietary restrictions and/or food allergies, please notify Go Ahead Tours at least 30 days prior to your departure by logging in to your account and updating your traveler info. To update this information closer to your departure date, please contact our Customer Experience Team.
  • If you have medication that you take daily, be sure you have enough for each day of the tour as well as any possible delays encountered.
  • Most of our itineraries include headsets used during certain sightseeing tours so travelers can hear their guides or Tour Director. If you use an assisted listening device, such as a hearing aid or cochlear implant, please visit our Help Center for more information or contact our customer experience team. Please note that at this time not all our destinations offer headsets due to supplier limitations.
  • This tour includes 2 lunches and 4 dinners: They may be set menus, buffets, or family-style meals, depending on the location. Dinners also include one glass of beer, wine, or a soft drink, as well as water, coffee, and tea.
  • Breakfast each morning is also included at the hotel and is typically buffet style with hot and cold options.
  • In South Korea, typical foods include rice, noodles, kimchi (a traditional Korean side dish made from fermented cabbage, radish, or cucumber and seasoned with ingredients like fish sauce and chili flakes), and bulgogi—a popular Korean barbecue dish.
  • Most Japanese meals are based around rice or noodles with fish, meat, and vegetables flavored with soy sauce and miso. You may recognize popular dishes like sushi, tempura, and hot pot.
  • At the conclusion of your tour, it is customary to offer your Tour Director and driver a gratuity in USD.
  • We recommend tipping $10USD to $12USD per person per day for your Tour Director and $3USD per person per day for your driver.
  • If applicable, we also recommend $2USD per local guide.
  • Tips can only be paid in cash.
  • If you are traveling to multiple countries with different currencies and the same Tour Director, ask them what currency they prefer for their tip.
  • The cost of porterage is included in your tour price, and it is not necessary to tip baggage handlers.
  • You will use the the Korean won in South Korea and the Japanese yen in Japan.
  • Better rates of exchange are usually available overseas, although it’s worth ordering some currency from your local bank to use when you first arrive.
  • We strongly advise that you take debit and credit cards, which can be used to withdraw cash at local banks as needed.
  • You can use most cards at ATMs on the international networks Cirrus and Plus, but make sure to check with your home bank about withdrawal fees.
  • International banks and businesses primarily accept debit and credit cards that work with the EMV chip system. If you don’t already have at least one card with a chip in it, we strongly recommend requesting one from your bank prior to your tour.
  • Plan ahead and bring cash to tip your Tour Director, local guides, and bus drivers.
  • To help you feel prepared before traveling on tour, we strongly recommend downloading the EF Go Ahead Tours mobile app. It’s free and provides information about important deadlines and entry requirements, as well as your detailed itinerary, packing tips, and more. You can also connect with fellow travelers through the app’s chat feature.
  • Wi-Fi is available in most hotels, though some charges may apply.
  • There is no Wi-Fi on any of the motor coaches.
  • Please contact your mobile service provider for information on roaming charges.
  • Your Tour Director will be leading your group throughout your journey. You will have one Tour Director in South Korea, then a different tour director while in Japan.
  • The role of the Tour Director is not only to provide information and context on the destinations you visit, but also to confirm services, coordinate inclusions, prepare each days’ activities and support travelers while on tour. As such, they must focus on the success of the group, and cannot provide individualized assistance to any one traveler.
  • One of the benefits of traveling with EF Go Ahead Tours is our on tour emergency support team.
  • Our extensive network of offices around the world, and our integration of ISO 31000: Risk Management Guidelines, help our dedicated 24/7 Emergency Service teams anticipate and address on-tour challenges in a flexible and iterative way.
  • This team supports travelers and Tour Directors using a combination of extensive training, simulations, incident response planning, and decades of experience to help manage emergencies if they arise, ranging from personal health concerns or injuries to major world events.
  • As needed, On Tour Support can facilitate additional support for travelers on tour, arrange assistance from outside specialists, and liaise with local and international authorities to help solve on-the-ground issues. In addition, the team is dedicated to supporting and facilitating communication between travelers and families in the event of an emergency while on the road or at home.
  • South Korea and Japan are nine hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) and 14 hours ahead of Eastern Time (ET).
  • When it’s noon in New York, it’s 2 am the next day on tour.
  • When you travel with Go Ahead Tours, you’ll make a positive impact on the places you visit and the people and animals you meet along the way. That’s because our three core Responsible Travel commitments—protecting the environment, supporting local communities, and promoting animal welfare—are at the heart of every tour we offer.
  • Travel, when done responsibly, can have an enormous socioeconomic impact on communities. To maximize your impact, eat at locally owned restaurants and shop at small businesses. Ask your Tour Director to point out restaurants they recommend.
  • Prepare for your trip: Be aware of monetary norms such as tipping and negotiating in a market; learn about the destination’s forms of etiquette; and take some time to learn a few words in the local language.
  • When interacting with locals, make sure to ask people for permission before you take their picture, and approach cultural differences with empathy and an open mind.
  • Go Ahead Tours encourages travelers to limit their waste while on the road, especially single-use plastics. You can cut back on generating plastic waste by packing your own toiletries, using electronic documents, and bringing a reusable water bottle and shopping bag. If you need to use plastics or paper, please recycle.
  • When visiting national parks, reserves, or other protected areas, please do not remove anything from the natural environment or leave any litter. Carry out what you carried in.

You will then make your way to Andong Hahoe Village, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a river flowing along its borders. Here, you will have the opportunity to visit Gyeongju National Museum and also Cheomseongdae, the oldest astronomical observatory in Asia. Make your way back to Seoul, where you will stay for two nights, exploring the enormous city. Before leaving South Korea to continue your Asia expedition, visit the DMZ, which serves as a buffer zone for North and South Korea. In the ancient city of Kyoto, you will experience the best gardens, temples, and shrines. Enrich your cultural side by partaking in a traditional green tea ceremony hosted by an apprentice geisha (maiko). Travel towards Mt. Fuji, visiting Hikone, where the beautiful Hikone Castle is surrounded by cherry blossoms in spring, and stopping at Hakone to take in the amazing views of Mt. Fuji. Stay overnight at a Japanese-style hotel, where you can relax in the hotel's hot spring bath. Once you have reached the bustling city of Tokyo, enjoy a bird's eye view of the city from Tokyo Tower, learn to make your own sushi, and during spring, visit Ueno Park, where you can see over a thousand cherry trees. With exclusive access to gardens, temples, shrines, castles, museums and specialty shops, you will have a one of a kind experience and a chance to see why these countries are popular tourist destinations. Billy, our guide was wonderful and very informative. Our driver was super and the van was just the right size. The 2 other guests were the best.

The tours was very interesting as it allows me to have a very good idea about Japan. I was able to visit many places such as temple, shrines, castle, Japanese gardens as well as historical places. Additionally, the tour allowed me to have nice experience from Japan such as the good food, Tea ceremony, the rapid train and typical Japanese Hotel. Furthermore, I have discovered through the tour the lovely nature of Japan and learned a lot of information about its history and its tradition.

Absolute;ly loved the tour! Billy was a fantastic guide and very informative about the culture and entertaining.

This was a fantastic way to see Japan. We saw so many sites and we had the opportunity to experience so many things. Learning how to make sushi was not only fun, but it was also a tasty lunch. Billy was a knowledgeable and entertaining tour guide. Kamata San is definitely a highly skilled bus driver. Learning about the varying cuisines in the different regions of Japan was a delicious lesson to learn.

It is the traveller's responsibility to ensure they have a valid passport. The passport must be valid for a minimum of six months from the intended date of return. Visas may be required for your destination. For further visa information, click here .

Important Information

Fitness Requirements While the tour itinerary should give you some guidance and overview to the expected requirements, to determine if this tour is right for you we categorise each of our tours in terms of their intensity. These guidelines are to ensure that each tour group is conducted as expected and to ensure the overall satisfaction of all Inspiring Vacations customers.

As a general rule, porterage is not included, therefore at all times you are expected to handle your own luggage where help may not be available.

Accommodation The accommodation listed is subject to change. Any changes will be of an equal or higher standard. Bedding configurations (double or twin) are requests only. All efforts will be made to meet your preferences, but we can’t guarantee your request will be available at all properties.

Room size Japan is a densely populated country and space is at a premium. On average, Japan's room sizes are the smallest you will encounter. At times, single beds are separated by a 30 cm to 40 cm gap.

Storage room is also limited - for your own comfort, ensure to pack as lightly as you can.

Single travellers When booking this tour, solo travellers will be presented with two options:

1 - Single Supplement

By paying an additional $1,745.00 per person, in addition to the twin-share price, you guarantee the privacy of your own room throughout the entire trip.

Please note when choosing Single Supplement for this tour, your room will generally consist of a double or semi-double bed. Occasionally there may be a hotel that will provide a single bedded room for single travellers. All rooms provided to single travellers will be smaller than the twin rooms we recommend for two people. Unfortunately this is typical for Japan, as the cost to solely occupy a twin size room is incredibly high. We appreciate your understanding.

2- Shared Room with a known friend

If travelling together with a friend, you can opt to share your room with him/her and avoid paying a single supplement.

You and your friend can create a unique booking each. Creating a unique booking, gives each of you the flexibility of making different travel arrangements (such adding extra accommodation, flights, etc), make separate payments and have individual access to our Traveller’s Hub

During the purchase path, you will need to provide your friend’s booking ID (if known) or at a minimum, your friend’s full name.

Twin Share Bedding Configuration At any time, bedding configuration is subject to confirmation by the hotel and based on availability. While you have the option to select either twin or double bedding at time of booking, our recommendation when travelling to Japan is to choose twin bedding, as the rooms are often bigger than those that have a double bed. If insisting on double bedding, please note that the rooms will be smaller and more narrow. As a general expectation, we cannot always guarantee bedding at all hotel stays.

Please note when choosing Single Supplement for this deal that you will receive a single room, which is smaller in size than a twin/double room. Unfortunately this is typical for Japan, as the cost to solely occupy a double/twin size room is incredibly high. We appreciate your understanding.

Triple Share Not available.

Travel Insurance Travel insurance is recommended to protect yourself against the unexpected. In addition to the support that a policy may provide, you may be asked to present a copy of your travel insurance documentation while traveling.

Group Size Maximum of  45 people

Trip Style - Group Tour Our Group Tours offer unparalleled value for money and are the perfect style of travel for those on a budget, though still eager to pack as much in to their itinerary as possible. These tours tick all the boxes with an abundance of inclusions such as sightseeing highlights, expert tour guides, quality accommodation, transfers, coach transportation, some meals and more. Please note that the maximum group size will vary between deals and will be mentioned within the Fine Print of each deal page. Children Children must share a room with parents at all times and are charged the same price as adults. Cherry Blossoms Please note: cherry blossoms are weather dependent and it is not guaranteed that they will be in bloom at the time of your arrival.

Health & Mobility Requirements

All participants must be in good physical condition to fully engage in this journey. For the safety and welfare of yourself and fellow travellers, if you are feeling unwell prior to departure, we advise staying home and contacting us to arrange alternate plans.

Prior to selecting your trip, carefully review the itinerary to assess your ability to comfortably manage our travel style. Please be aware that if, based on evaluation by our leader or local representative, a participant is deemed unable to safely complete the itinerary, we retain the right to exclude them from all or part of the trip without reimbursement.

It is advisable to consult your physician for current medical travel advisories and any required vaccinations before embarking. We recommend carrying a first aid kit and any necessary medications in their original packaging, as they may not be readily available during travel. For those carrying medication, it's essential to check your government's foreign travel guidelines for local restrictions or regulations.

  • $255.00 per room, per night for double and twin share
  • $221.00 per room, per night for solo travellers

This highly rewarding 20-day South Korea & Japan By Rail tour kicks off in fine style in the ancient city of Seoul, Korea, which is today one of the most populous and dynamic cities in the world.

Our city tour encompasses the presidential residence, the palaces and the museum, and we glean an even better understanding of the history of the city with a visit to the Korean Folk Village, wherein inhabitants lead traditional lifestyles and practice traditional customs.

Heading to Japan, we first stop off in Tokyo to see the largest wholesale market in the world, the Imperial Palace and the finest collection of Japanese art in the entire country.

Aboard the 'bullet train' we make headway through beautiful countryside to the mountainous Hakone region, where we see castle towns and national parks and take a funicular to marvel at magnificent views farther up the mountainside.

In the Hida area, we find a people whose long isolation due to geographic conditions has resulted in an evolution of lifestyle and culture unlike any other region in the country.

Kyoto and Hiroshima round off the Japan leg of our adventure and bring our tour to a climactic close.

Day 1 Arrive in Seoul Arrive in Seoul/Incheon, South Korea and transfer to our hotel. Seoul is a city of contrasts. In this rapidly evolving metropolis, the traditional exists with the modern in a state of harmony. For over 500 years the seat of Joseon Dynasty kings, Seoul is now the beating heart of modern Korea, the centre to which all else in the country is drawn. Overnight in Seoul. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Seoul: The DMZ & Seoul City Touring This morning we hit the ground running with a full highlight-packed day. After an early departure we travel along the Jayuro (Freedom Road) to Imjingak, the northernmost point bordering North Korea.* On the way, we will be able to view barbed wire fences and military guards on duty all the way along the river. At Imjingak, we visit the Mangbaedan Memorial ritual altar which was established in 1985 for those who were separated from their families or displaced from home during the Korean War. It is a symbolic spot used to hold traditional memorial services for ancestors or to pray for separated family members living in the North and for reunification of the country. We will see the Freedom Bridge, the very locale where 12,773 Korean War prisoners walked to freedom to South Korea in 1953. We then board a tour bus that will take us to the 3rd infiltration tunnel dug up by North Koreans. On the 20-minute ride to the tunnel, we pass through the check points, military camps, and mine fields. Before going down to the tunnel, we will view a short video presentation and visit exhibition hall for information on the divided Koreas. A seven-minute tram ride (if available) or a walk down a steep access through a narrow and steep interception tunnel, leads us to the lower platform, a point where we are only 170 meters from the Military Demarcation Line. Our next stop is the Dora Observatory where we can see the whole expanse of the Demilitarized Zone, North Korean propaganda village, Gijeong-dong, where the world's largest flag hangs on a 160 meter-tall flagpole, South Korea's northernmost village of Daeseong-dong and Panmunjom where the ceasefire that ended hostilities was signed. We return to Seoul in time for a break for lunch in Insadong, a lively district known for it's vast array of restaurants, small museums, and shopping. Insadong was originally two towns whose names ended in the syllables "In" and "Sa". They were divided by a stream which ran along Insadong's current main street. Insadong began 500 years ago as an area of residence for government officials. Today Insadong has some of the tastiest food vendors in all of Seoul. One of the main attractions in the area is the ‘Kings Dessert’ or the ‘Dragons Beard Candy’, 16,000 strings of honey wrapped multiple times with a flavouring of either almond, peanut or chocolate on the inside. There are also gooey pancakes and spicy Korean dumplings to sample. From here we proceed to the War Memorial of Korea, an excellent tie-in with what we experienced at the DMZ. This huge museum documents the history of the Korean War (1950–53) with documentary footage (with English commentary) of the main battles and events. Along with photos, maps and artefacts, the films give a fascinating insight into what the war was like. There's also plenty of military hardware outside – tanks, helicopters, missiles and planes, plus stirring war memorials. * Due to an ever-changing security situation, our activities today may be altered, re-routed, or curtailed without notice. Overnight in Seoul. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 3 Seoul: City Touring This morning we start with a visit to Gyeongbokgung Palace, where we plan to arrive in time for the very colourful changing-of-the-guard ceremony. Of all the tourist attractions in Seoul, the Joseon Dynasty Palaces and, particularly Gyeongbokgung Palace, are the most tangible link between modern Korea and its not-too-distant monarchical past. Not merely inert relics, they are symbols of a deep history and rich culture. Although substantially reduced in number, the remaining palace buildings provide a glimpse of traditional architecture and the overall organization of a palace grounds. As part of our visit, we also include the National Folk Museum, contained within the palace. This excellent museum presents historical artifacts that were used in the daily lives of Korean people in the past. Through the displays, visitors can learn about the domestic and agricultural lifestyles, as well as Korea’s cultural beliefs. After a break for lunch, we proceed to Jongmyo, a royal shrine dedicated to the performance of ancestral rites for the deceased kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty. Being the place where the royal ancestral tablets are enshrined, Jongmyo's atmosphere is solemn and sacred rather than splendid like the royal palaces. The simple and elegant buildings of this shrine have faithfully kept their original forms since the 16th century. We finish our day at Namsan Seoul Tower, built in 1969 as Korea's first integrated transmission tower beaming television and radio broadcasts across the capital. Since opening to the public in 1980, it has become a much-loved Seoul landmark. The tower's main attractions include multi-coloured digital art projected onto the tower at night, a digital observatory, a roof terrace, and a number of viewing platforms where visitors can enjoy the cityscape. 32 LCD screens recount the 600-year history of Seoul. This evening we'll have our dinner at the top of the tower and enjoy a typical Korean meal and nighttime views of the city. Overnight in Seoul. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 4 Seoul - Fly to Jeju Island This morning we transfer to the airport for our short flight to Jeju Island. Jeju Island, also known as the "Island of the Gods," is a popular vacation spot for Koreans and foreigners; indeed it remains the top honeymoon destination for Korean newlyweds. The island is known for beaches, rugged coastal scenery, volcanic geography, and a unique culture which stands in stark contrast to the mainland (and much of Asia) as being matriarchal. Stemming from this basis, and some odd tax reasons, the role of seafood gathering on the island has been dominated by women. As such, a common sight around Jeju's coastline is that of the "haenyo" or "woman diver", a figure that has become somewhat iconic of the island. After our arrival we'll have a break for lunch and then visit the informative Folklore and History Museum, an excellent introduction to the island. Flight/arrival time-permitting, we can also visit Yakcheonsa Buddhist Temple, a relatively new structure built in the style of Buddhist temples of the early Joseon Dynasty. Overnight on Jeju Island. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 5 Jeju Island Touring Early this morning we head to Sunrise Peak for a spectacular view of/from this unique caldera/mountain and surrounds. After a break for lunch we'll visit the Jeju Haenyeo Museum, dedicated to the women divers of Jeju before heading to Ilchul Land, a park offering themed gardens, sculptures, and walks in Micheon Cave, a large lava tunnel. Jeju has an extensive system of lava tubes, natural conduits through which magma once flowed, now empty caves that are some of the largest in the world. The insides of the tube is adorned with multi-coloured carbonate decorations and innumerable cave formations commonly found in lava tubes. They include lava stalactites and lava stalagmites, lava columns, lava flowstone, lava helictites and lava blister, cave corals, benches, lava raft, lava bridges, lava shelves and striations. Our last stop is Dol Hareubang, a small park featuring stone sculptures associated with local legends, plus a traditional garden. Overnight on Jeju. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 6 Jeju Island - Fly to Busan: City Touring This morning we fly to Busan, South Korea's second largest city and largest seaport. Busan is known for its beaches, hot springs, nature reserves, and events such as the city's renowned international film festival held each fall. Busan is a good destination for those seeking a more laid back atmosphere than Seoul. Located at the southern tip of the Korean Peninsula, Busan's important port gives the city an international flair, with sailors from around the world trooping through and a growing number of tourists. On arrival we'll visit the Gamcheon Cultural Village (a UNESCO site), spread out in a panorama of endless rows of low-rise cubicle homes climbing up the steep hillsides, earning it the nickname "Santorini of the East." The cheerful blue, yellow and pink hues a delight to the eye. Narrow stone and concrete alleyways wind their way through the homes, yielding something new at every turn. The village used to house the city’s poorest people, but during the Korean War, refugees fled their homes for Busan, which was the only area which was free from fighting. We'll head to the Jagalchi Fish Market for a break for lunch, followed by a visit to the impressive UN Cemetery. Overnight in Busan. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 7 Busan: Gyeongju Excursion This morning we head out of the city to Gyeongju, located on Korea's southeast coast. This was the capital of the 1,000-year Silla dynasty, and is known for its extensive historical remains. We'll visit the 8th-century Bulguksa Temple featuring twin stone pagodas, a series of wooden staircases, and a large bronze Buddha. Afer a break for lunch in Hwanglidan-gil we'll continue to Tumuli Park, which contains 23 of the over 200 royal tombs found in Gyeongju. At times, the sense of history, and of secrets buried along with the royals, is almost palpable in the quiet between the large grass-covered mounds. We'll visit Cheomseongdae, the oldest astronomical observatory in all of Asia The 362 stones that make up the 27-level structure represent each day of the lunar year. Built during the reign of Shilla Queen Seon-deok, it was used for observing the stars in order to forecast the weather. Our last stops include Gyeongju National Museum, largely devoted to relics of the Silla Kingdom; and Donggung Palace and Wolji Pond, once part of the palace complex of ancient Silla. Return to Busan. PLEASE NOTE: owing to the length of the day and the probability of a busy trave day tomorrow, your Tour Leader may choose to include lunch today and leave dinner to yourselves this evening. Overnight in Busan. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 8 Busan, South Korea - Fly to Tokyo, Japan Today we fly from Busan to Tokyo. Tokyo is Japan's capital and the country's largest city. Prior to 1868, Tokyo was known as Edo. A small castle town in the 16th century, Edo became Japan's political center in 1603 when Tokugawa Ieyasu established his feudal government there. A few decades later, Edo had grown into one of the world's most populous cities. Overnight in Tokyo. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 9 Tokyo: City Touring Tokyo is a dazzling modern metropolis rich in history and tradition. While the pace and the glitz of the city can be overwhelming, we will do our best to also showcase the tranquil, traditional side of the world's most populous city. We have a private bus at our disposal today, though we may, during our time in the city, also make use of its legendarily efficient public transit system, an excellent way to observe the locals going about their daily lives in one of the world’s most vibrant cities. We’ll kick off our morning with a visit to one of Tokyo’s venerable department stores, the earliest of which were founded during the early 1900s. Their predecessors were kimono stores, which supplied various types of luxurious goods during the Edo and Meiji periods. Japanese department stores are famous for their unparalleled customer service; we’ll aim to be there just before it opens when we will see its employees lined up neatly, waiting to welcome customers. The moment the second hand of the clock hits the opening time, the doors punctually open and customers can make a grand entrance being flanked by bowing and greeting staff. We’ll take some time to stroll through the food halls, where you will see the amazing variety of beautifully-presented foods being sold at unbelievably high prices. Seeing where and how the Japanese shop, what they buy, for whom and for what occasion, offers instructive glimpses into a highly sophisticated social strata where conventions of human interaction and presentation are minutely-defined. Whether it be for a wedding, business meeting or returning from a trip, the culture of gift giving in Japan is one of the most prevalent in the world. However, unlike in some other cultures, in Japan the emphasis is more on the ritual of gift giving than the gift itself. This dates back to the Edo period when a lucky few would go on pilgrimages and bring back souvenirs for the villagers who weren’t able to go. You’ll have time here to pick up supplies for a picnic lunch at our next stop (a “bento box” is an excellent and convenient option). We then move on to the East Gardens of the Imperial Palace, part of the inner palace area. The Imperial Palace, or Kokyo, built on the site of the Edo-jo Castle, is an impregnable fortress that housed the Tokugawa Shogunate for 265 years until Emperor Meiji moved the court here in 1860's. Surrounded by moats, the original outer walls extended for over 16 km (10 miles) and were thick enough for a squad of samurai to walk six abreast on top. Even in its original state, it deceptively looked more like an administrative villa than a fortress. The buildings survived until they were all but obliterated by the fire bombings of WWII. You’ll have time to explore a bit, see the iconic bridge, and to enjoy your picnic lunch in a relatively peaceful setting. Our next stop is Meiji Shrine. Entry into the shrine grounds (a ten minute walk) is marked by a massive torii gate, after which the sights and sounds of the busy city are replaced by a tranquil forest. The approximately 100,000 trees that make up Meiji Jingu's forest were planted during the shrine's construction and were donated from regions across the entire country. At the middle of the forest, Meiji Jingu's buildings also have an air of tranquility distinct from the surrounding city. While in the vicinity of the shrine, time- and weather-permitting, we may be able to take a stroll down nearby Takeshita Street, possibly the busiest and definitely the most colourful pedestrianized shopping street in Tokyo. Our last stop is Ueno Park and the National Museum which, among other things, features the finest collection of Japanese art in the country. After our guided tour of the museum we will return to our hotel before our evening meal at a local restaurant. Overnight in Tokyo. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Tokyo: Sushi Making Class This morning we take a fascinating dive into Japanese seafood cuisine during a 3-hour combination walking tour of a local fishmarket and cooking class, where we can learn to prepare traditional style 'washoku' food items like sushi and a Japanese omelette. We meet up with our guide in front of Tsukiji Honganji Temple, located just outside the market. Then we step inside this temple to all things seafood for an in-depth shopping session including plenty of time for photography and exploration. As you wander the aisles of this colourful and chaotic market, you’ll observe everything from giant tuna to sea urchins to octopus arranged for sale. We'll then proceed with our guide to the gourmet cooking studio of one of Asia's largest culinary schools, boasting more than 150 studios throughout the region. Following the instruction of an experienced cooking teacher, we'll learn to prepare two 'washoku' recipes, a style of Japanese cuisine emphasizing traditional and homemade techniques. This typically includes a sushi roll along with a Japanese style omelette called Tamagoyaki, plus side dishes. This will be an excellent and fun introduction to Japanese cuisine, definitely a highlight of any trip to Japan. We finish our session by digging into our tasty creations for lunch. We'll leave with full stomachs and a new-found appreciation for the wondrous world of Japanese cuisine and its top-notch ingredients. Because of our late/filling lunch and full day tomorrow, and because you may be planning an evening activity before we leave Tokyo, we will leave dinner on your own account tonight. Your Tour Leader can help you plan. Tomorrow our large luggage is transported to Hakone for us -- please pack an OVERNIGHT BAG for ONE NIGHT. Your larger bags (one per person) will be shipped ahead to Takayama, and you will need to pack an overnight bag to carry with you for the the one overnight in Hakone. Your Tour Leader will advise in advance re recommended items to have with you for the next two days. Overnight in Tokyo. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 11 Tokyo - Lake Ashi - Hakone This morning we take a short metro (train) ride* to Odawara Station where we connect with our private coach towards Lake Ashi near Hakone. Shortly after we leave the station, we'll make a brief stop to see Odawara Castle (exterior visit only). Wedged between Mt Fuji and the Izu Peninsula, Hakone is a large region encircled by several forested mountains with a beauty accented by deep glens and ravines. In the feudal era, Hakone was a very important checkpoint that safeguarded the security of Edo (now Tokyo) as the seat of the Shogunate. This onsen (hotspring) area has been popular since the 1500s, when Hideyoshi Toyotomi came here to relax in an open-air bath after the hard fought Battle of Odawara. From the castle town of Odawara we board a bus that takes us into the National Park. We then board a lake cruiser on Lake Ashi for scenic views of the surrounding mountains. Weather permitting, we can enjoy views of Mt Fuji. One of the highlights today will be our visit to the Hakone Outdoor Museum, or Chokoku-no-mori, a beautiful park filled with sculptures by renowned Japanese and international artists such as Rodin, Bourdelle, Moore, Zadkine, and Picasso. Tonight we will enjoy a Keiseki-type meal at our ryokan-style hotel. Originally this type of dining was to accompany tea ceremony and is a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds. You can feel free to wear your "yukata" (bathrobe - provided by the hotel) to the dining room as many of the Japanese do when they stay in ryokan, a perfectly wonderful place to relax after leaving busy Tokyo behind. Our rooms are traditional style with tatami flooring and futon beds. * OUR LUGGAGE will be sent ahead to Takayama for us -- please pack an overight bag for today/this evening/tomorrow (the cost of this is included in your tour). Our luggage will be waiting for us tomorrow afternoon. Please note that this service is also available elsewhere; your Tour Leader can advise/assist and payment can be made directly. Overnight in Hakone. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 12 Hakone - Train to Takayama Today we travel by Shinkansen (Bullet Train) to Takayama. The region known as Hida, which surrounds Takayama, was cut off from the rest of Japan by almost impregnable encircling mountains. Hida lacked good farmland, which made taxpaying from an agricultural livelihood an impossible burden upon the people. Necessity caused them to diversify, so the craftsmen of Takayama honed their tools to a sharpness matched by their skills and became known as the finest woodworkers in the land. The mountains yielded the most coveted lumber in the empire, which Takayama's artisans fashioned into magnificent works worthy to adorn Japan's finest temples, shrines and palaces. During the Nara period, the central government, in lieu of taxes, required ten Takayama craftsmen to relocate to the capital, where their considerable talents were employed. During the Tokugawa era, the ancestral daimyo of Takayama was reassigned to the far north. Our train journey today takes us through the scenic Hida River Valley. We arrive in the late afternoon and will have time to wander through the lovely town of Takayama and the merchant quarter of San-machi with its historic wooden structures. Overnight in Takayama. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Takayama: City Tour This morning we will visit the colourful early morning market before heading to the Hida Folk Village, consisting of over 30 unique houses which had been scattered in the Hida region.* The houses are attractively laid out around a small lake and display valuable articles showing the way of life and culture of the past. The style of architecture is called gassho-zukuri, or "praying hand" houses, because of the steep pitch of the roofs reminiscent of two clasped hands in prayer. This was to protect the occupants from the large amounts of snow that fall here over the winter months. Upon our return to the town centre we will visit the Yatai Kaikan, or Float Museum. Your afternoon is at leisure. Takayama is a small, interesting and manageable place for those who enjoy easy-going, on-foot exploration. Overnight in Takayama. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 14 Takayama - Train to Kyoto Our journey continues back through the Hida Valley to connect with the Shinkansen train in Nagoya. Kyoto vibrates with creative energy. For 1,000 years, skilled craftsmen, wise masters, and the nation's most promising fine artists have been lured here. The deep impress of culture and the refinement is indelible; it's in the soul of the city. A long line of Japanese emperors was enthroned here, and the city retains this regal bearing through myriad festivals and commemorative customs preserved from feudal times. In diminutive home workshops along cobblestone alleyways no wider than a footpath, lacquerware, cloisonne, damascene, kimono fabrics, pottery, porcelain, fans, dolls, embroideries, and bamboo ware are still expertly turned out by hand. Kyoto attracts a sophisticated crowd to its vibrant Noh and Kabuki theatres, while the last geisha finishing schools are found in the lantern-lit side streets of the Pontocho and Gion sections of the city. Thankfully, Kyoto's treasures were spared from bombing during WW II, when American scholars persuaded the military to leave this masterpiece of a city alone. Though Kyoto is now a thoroughly modern city, much of its spirit is intact, with over 200 Shinto shrines; 1,600 temples, 30 of which administer to the major sects of Buddhism throughout Japan; three Imperial palaces, nine major museums, and countless classic gardens. We arrive in this fascinating city mid-afternoon. Tonight we will venture to the Pontocho District, one of the traditional geisha quarters of Kyoto and next door to its rival, Gion. Wandering down the narrow lanes with the Kama River flowing alongside gives a sense to what this city was like long ago. Overnight in Kyoto. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Kyoto: City Tour Today we have a highlight-packed full day of sightseeing in this spectacular city. Please note that the actual order of sites visited may vary from what is listed below, depending on how your Tour Leader and local guide for the day determine what is the best way to deliver the program. We start with a quick stop at Nishi Honganji (West Honganji), a designated UNESCO world heritage site, built in 1591 by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Nishi Honganji is the head temple of the Honganji faction of the Jodo-Shin sect with over 10,000 sub-temples across the country and 200 temples overseas. The two largest structures are the Goeido Hall, dedicated to Shinran, the sect's founder, and the Amidado Hall dedicated to the Amida Buddha, the most important Buddha in Jodo-Shin Buddhism. We then visit Heian Shrine, built in 1895 to commemorate the 1,100th anniversary of the founding of the capital. It is a replica to three-fifths of the size of the first imperial palace in the ancient capital Heiankyo. We also visit the beautiful "go-round" style garden with a total area of 30,000 sq metres, which is well-known for the beauty of its weeping cherry trees, Japanese iris, and waterlilies. At some point we will make a stop to acquire some picnic lunch items followed by a break, possibly combined with a walk on Philosopher's Path (Tetsugaku no michi), a pleasant route through the northern part of Kyoto's Higashiyama district. The path follows a canal which is lined by hundreds of cherry trees. We continue to Ginkakuji, the Silver Pavillion, and then proceed to Kinkakuji, the Golden Pavilion, one of Japan's most famous architectural and historical icons. We also visit Ryoan-ji, the famous raked gravel Zen Garden, for which the Zen Buddhists are renowned. The essential dichotomy and harmony of the universe, which lies at the heart of this belief system, is symbolized in these tranquil gardens. After a busy day, we’ll have a break before reconvening for our evening meal at a local restaurant. Overnight in Kyoto. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 16 Kyoto & Nara Today we travel by local train to Nara. The crest of every mountain, the slope of every hill, the mute testimony of every rock, the waterfall, rivulet, and the valley of Nara are infused with the intangible spiritual energy that accompanied the birth of the Japanese civilization. Nara, meaning "level land, " occupies the great basin of what was Yamoto, or the Land of Great Peace. Here was the centre of the half-real, half mythical kingdom of Japan before it became a nation. Jimmu Tenno, the first emperor of Japan, was purportedly buried at Nara, the Imperial Japan, the oldest existing dynasty in the world, established its first permanent court within the city in 710. Arts, culture, and literature also bloomed in this fertile valley. The earliest histories of the nation were compiled in Nara by noble court ladies in colloquial Japanese, and from the ancient city Buddhism spread throughout the land. In its glory days, Nara covered an expansive area linked by palaces, temples, shrines, public buildings, and nobles' villas. The temples were massive and extremely powerful, almost like independent city-states. Numerous fires, the ravages of time, war, and pestilence have reduced many of the ancient structures, but plenty remain in their original states, especially in the eastern sections of the city. Part of this legacy is the Great Buddha of Todai-ji Otera, the largest bronze statue in the world, tipping the scales at over 500 tonnes. Nara Koen, at over 500 ha (1235 acres), is Japan's largest park and is home to the sacred deer of nearby Kasuga Taisha. This shrine, moss-covered and illuminated by over 3000 stone lanterns, was first erected in 768 and is second in importance only to the Grand shrines of Ise. As we walk through this park dotted with temples and deer wandering about, you will be struck at how the sublime cultural richness of the quiet past lingers on. Overnight in Kyoto. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 17 Kyoto: Nijo Castle & Leisure time This morning we visit Nijo Castle, built in 1603 as the Kyoto residence of Tokugawa Ieyasu, the first shogun of the Edo Period (1603-1867). His grandson Iemitsu completed the castle's palace buildings 23 years later and further expanded the castle by adding a five story castle keep. After the Tokugawa Shogunate fell in 1867, Nijo Castle was used as an imperial palace for a while before being donated to the city and opened up to the public as a historic site. Its palace buildings are arguably the best surviving examples of castle palace architecture of Japan's feudal era, and the castle was designated a UNESCO world heritage site in 1994. The balance of the day is yours to explore Kyoto on your own. A good place to start may be the small Japanese garden named Shoseien, located another few street blocks east of Higashi Honganji. Your Tour Leader can help you plan your afternoon. Overnight in Kyoto. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 18 Kyoto - Train to Hiroshima Today we take the Shinkansen train to Hiroshima. Passing through Osaka and Kobe, just minutes from Kyoto on this fast train, we will arrive at our destination in just a couple of hours. Modern Hiroshima rose like a phoenix from its own ashes. Less than five decades since its obliteration, it is once again the most vital city of San-Yo with a population of one million and growing. Hiroshima is referred to as the "River City." In its confines, the Ota-gawa River fans out into six delta tributaries that flow into the immense and very busy bay. In the years just following the A-bomb blast, scientists doubted if Hiroshima could ever live again. Today the streets hum with activity, trees and flowers grow, and birds sing. Nature may not forget, but it does forgive! On the morning of August 6, 1945, the people of war-torn Japan hurried to begin the day. Then suddenly buildings melted, people evaporated, and humankind lost the first battle of the atomic age. Seventy thousand buildings were flattened and 200,000 people perished, the lucky ones quickly; the unlucky lingered. Hiroshima, fringed by mountains forming a natural amphitheatre, seethed and fumed. Our visit takes us to the Peace Memorial Park (Heiwa Kinen Koen). Here the Cenotaph, shaped like an ancient tomb, holds the names of the dead. The prayer, the hope, the Japanese reads "Repose ye in peace, for the error shall not be repeated." The skeleton of the Atomic Bomb Dome (Genbaku Domu) turns green with age against a blue sky. Until all nuclear arms are banned and destroyed, the Eternal Flame will flicker. We will visit the Peace Memorial Museum and walk to the A-Bomb Dome, passing the many monuments, memorials, and statues. Overnight Hiroshima. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 19 Hiroshima & Miyajima Today we travel by train and ferry to Miyajima where we spend the day. Since ancient times, Miyajima has been regarded as one of the "Three Most Beautiful Spots" of Japan and, as part of the Seto Inland Sea National Park, it has received several distinctions, such as a place of extraordinary scenic beauty, exceptional history, and a natural monument. The virgin forests neighbouring Mt. Misen are representative of the lush greenery and abundance of nature which still covers the entire island even now. A surprisingly large number of southwestern Japan native botanical specimens can still be found on Miyajima. The island is like a miniature model of Japan, showing the harmonious ecology of all living things from the ocean depth to the top of mountains. Our walking tour of the island will include a visit to the famous Itsukushima Shrine, which together with its large wooden tori, stands in the ocean during high tide.* You will also have some free time to admire this World Heritage Site before returning to Hiroshima. * Please be advised that the tori may be undergoing regular maintenance at the time of our visit. This occurs every 30 years and can, depending on its needs, take anywhere from 6 months to two years to complete. Please be prepared for the gate to be either partially or completely covered by scoffolding during this time. Overnight in Hiroshima. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 20 Hiroshima - Departure Departure for home. LAND ONLY CLIENTS: You could book your return flight from Osaka or Fukuoka instead of Hiroshima, though you would have to make it late enough in the day to allow for your arrival by train on the same day. Trains are very regular and your Tour Leader will assist. Your flight from Fukuoka or Osaka should be no earlier than 4pm. YOU MAY also fly directly from Hiroshima to Tokyo and connect to homeward flights if this is easier/more economical for you (though beware of possible change of airport). Land & Air passengers may be offered this option. Departure from Hiroshima. Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Full-time Tour Leader services with local guide support. Breakfast and most dinners (mostly at local restaurants) are included daily. All transport, accommodation, sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. We include luggage forwarding services on one train journey in Japan (as per the tour itinerary); this service may be available elsewhere with your Tour Leader's assistance (payment can be made locally). Gratuities for restaurant staff, porters, local guides. Airport transfers for land & air customers arriving/departing on tour dates.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuities, lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), domestic and international (if applicable) air taxes, and any excursions referenced as 'optional'. Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Optional trip cancellation insurance. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on shopping, not included meals.

Seasonality and Weather Both spring and early autumn tours can expect warm to hot temperatures with moderate humidity. April dates can expect daytime high temperatures of about 23-26C (74-78 F), with chilly mornings and evenings. Humidity is higher for our early fall (Sep/Oct) departures, with temperatures ranging from 25-30C (78-86 F). Rain showers can occur at any time, though their likelihood decreases the later we get into the fall.

Transport and Travel Conditions KOREA: Private air-conditioned bus; internal flight via scheduled carrier. JAPAN TRAIN TRAVEL: The tour is physical in that we move around a lot and that we rely heavily on train travel. We include baggage forwarding for the group on one occasion (Tokyo to Hakone) as it makes the most sense logistically. After this point, there is usually the option to have your bags sent ahead again, to be reunited with your bag toward the end of the following day (you will need to carry an overnight bag). As many travellers prefer to manage with their own bags, we leave the cost of forwarding to the individual, which is usually in the range of $20-25 per bag depending on bag dimensions (not by weight). Should you choose to use this service elsewhere while on tour, please confer with your Tour Leader who will make the arrangements for which you can pay locally. If you prefer to manage with your own bags, please note that Japanese stations can be large and crowded and may not have escalators or elevators. You must pack lightly, preferably in wheeled soft-sided baggage, plus a day-bag that you can fit into the overhead luggage compartments on the trains. There is also a very strong culinary element to this trip. Breakfasts feature Asian as well as Western items, but our dinners out at local restaurants will feature a wide range of local specialties. Eating is very much a cultural experience in this part of the world, and this aspect of our program is an integral part of the overall experience. Though individual tastes and requirements will be taken into account by your leader who will be organizing our evening meals on-the-go, if you are strictly a meat-and-potatoes person, or a strict vegetarian/vegan/gluten-free etc, you may find your needs/preferences significantly challenged on this tour.

Am I suitable for this tour? Please refer to our self-assessment form .

Activity Level: 2 These are particularly busy tours that feature a lot of moving around, sometimes by train and short journeys on local transport. Walking tours of towns and cities are leisurely but you should be prepared to be on your feet for several hours. Some of our cultural trips that occur at high altitude and/or require greater independence with baggage handling (at hotels, airports, train stations) also fall into this category.

To learn more about the Activity levels, please visit our tour styles page.

Accommodation All hotels are centrally-located, air-conditioned, 3-4 star standard with private bath facilities. We spend one night at a traditional Ryokan (in Hakone), which features tatami rooms and futon bedding. Laundry service is available at most hotels (except Hakone) for a rather high price. All hotel rooms are well equipped and usually include coffee/tea making facilities. Most hotels have hairdryers and irons. Some hotels have indoor/outdoor swimming pools. Single rooms are limited in number and possibly smaller than twins. Porters are generally available (see 'Inclusions').

Kyoto is the spiritual heart of Japan, home to great masterpieces of religious architecture where robed monks still wander through Zen gardens and prayer chants float through air heavy with incense. DAY 11 & 12, OSAKA - NARA ANCIENT TOWN - GREAT BUDDHA

Osaka is a modern city of dazzling neon billboards, craft beer pubs, sushi restaurants and izakayas (informal pub eateries) but should you wish to take a step back in time you can visit the nearby ancient town of Nara, Japan’s first capital crammed full of Buddhist temples, shrines and museums with the highlight being the awe-inspiring Daibutsu, an 8th century statue of the Great Buddha made from 437 tonnes of bronze and 130 kg of gold!

In Japan we use a mixture of bullet trains, direct local trains and the odd local bus service to get around the country at a leisurely pace during daylight hours. Local transport in Japan is always very comfortable.

From Japan we take a fast ferry to South Korea.

In South Korea we use comfortable local buses to travel around during daylight with most journeys being just a few hours long.

We provide an average of one meal per day on this tour, usually breakfast at the hotels we stay at, so 26 breakfasts in total. Lunch and evening meals at your own expense. Local food is generally very cheap so if you are on a budget eat what the locals eat and you will be sure to get a real flavour of the country at a cheap price.

ACCOMMODATION

We mostly stay at 3 & 4 star hotels and local guest houses during this tour to ensure you are comfortable at all times. Please note that Japanese and Korean hotel rooms are usually smaller than western hotel rooms but are generally very modern and comfortable.

In Japan we also spend at least one night in a traditional ryokan (Japanese Inn) with sliding doors, tatami mats and futon beds to give you a taste of authentic Japan.

Accommodation is provided on a twin share basis so if you are travelling alone be prepared to share your room with another member of the tour, male or female. Your tour leader will always strive to put you in a room with a suitable partner. Couples can request a room with a double bed.

There is a single supplement fee of £1300 if you are a solo traveller and prefer to have a private room just for yourself.

Your tour leader will arrange local guides to give you the history of the important historic sites that we visit along the way. Please bear in mind that your tour tour leader is not a guide and will not be giving you the history of the sites we visit. Historic sites require the specialist knowledge of a local guide.

On some tours we may also have a cameraman who is there to help market our tours and update our social media.

Tipping your tour leader at the end of the tour is always appreciated if you feel they have done a good job. We recommend you tip your tour leader a minimum of $150 at the end of this tour. Thank you.

PRE-DEPARTURE INFORMATION

Personal budget & travel money.

PERSONAL BUDGET

As breakfast, accommodation, transport, most entrance fees and guided tours are included during this tour you won’t need much spending money. We therefore recommend a budget of $1250 per person to live comfortably during this tour. This budget should cover day to day things like the lunches and dinners that are not included, snacks, soft drinks, the odd few beers, etc.

Souvenirs are something that can be very cheap or very expensive so if you are going to be buying things like silk carpets you should budget for it.

Please also have a look at our Optional Excursions list as you may want to budget for a few of those activities too.

TRAVEL MONEY

Credit/debit cards are accepted in nearly every place we visit on this tour.

We do however recommend you bring USD $300 in cash as emergency spending money. US Dollars are generally accepted everywhere for exchange.

ATM’s are widely available for you to draw local currency using your credit/debit card so there is no need to have a lot of cash on you during this tour.

To keep your money/credit cards/passport/tablet/camera/laptop safe we recommend you purchase a ‘Pacsafe Travelsafe’ product. They offer various size portable anti-theft bags that can be attached to the vehicles when travelling and also attached to the sink/bed/closet in your hotel room when off the vehicles.

VISAS & PASSPORTS

Below is general information and recommendations regarding visas and passports. Visas are ultimately your own responsibility to obtain and visa requirements may vary according to your nationality and place of application, so use the information below as a guide only. Dragoman is in no way responsible for obtaining your visas or passports.

Japan visas are issued free of charge upon arrival for most Europeans, North Americans, Australians and New Zealanders. Other nationalities should check to see if you require a visa before arrival.

South Korea visas are issued free of charge upon arrival for most Europeans, North & South Americans, Australians, New Zealanders and South Africans. Other nationalities should check to see if you require a visa before arrival.

Please ensure you have 1 free page in your passport in order to accommodate all the immigration stamps and ensure your passport is valid for at least 8 months after the tour start date.

VACCINATIONS & MEDICAL

VACCINATIONS

Vaccination requirements are constantly changing so we recommend you seek the latest professional medical advice at least 8 weeks before departure to ensure you allow yourself enough time to obtain all necessary vaccinations. Nomad Travel’s website has up-to-date information on vaccinations, malaria and other general medical advice for all the countries we will be visiting and they also administer vaccinations at their Travel Clinics in various locations within the UK.

www.nomadtravel.co.uk

Alternatively speak with your local Health Professionals for current accurate information. You will need to make an appointment with your GP or Travel Clinic and take a list of the countries you are visiting and the approximate dates when you will be there.

MEDICALLY FIT & ABLE

You need to be in good general health for this tour and be reasonably fit and able. You do not need to be super-fit by any means and all ages are welcome. We always attract a very broad age range on these tours, from people in their 20’s through to people in their 70’s.

Please inform us of any medical conditions that you have before departure so that your tour leader knows how to deal with a medical situation if it should arise. All information will be kept confidential unless you request us to inform your fellow travellers. For example, it may be wise to inform fellow travellers if you are allergic to something like bee-stings so they know what to do if you get stung.

FIRST AID KIT

The tour leader carries a basic first aid kit during the tour but it is recommended that you bring your own first aid kit for general use.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

It is compulsory that every person who travels with Dragoman obtain travel insurance for the complete duration of the tour. Proof of travel insurance must be shown before joining a tour.

As this is a relatively short tour you may be covered under your credit card’s travel insurance so it may be worth checking with your credit card provider first.

There are various travel insurance companies to choose from and a Google search will bring up a vast selection but for a comprehensive reliable policy that includes Covid Cover and Medical Repatriation we recommend a London based company named Campbell Irvine, telephone +44 20 7938 1734, https://microsite.campbellirvinedirect.com/madventure/

Campbell Irvine is familiar with what we do so if you mention Dragoman and the tour you are travelling on they should be able to provide excellent cover for you.

For people based in North America a company called Allianz offers good cover, telephone +1 866 884 3556, www.allianztravelinsurance.com

If you choose to obtain your travel insurance through another company please ensure you read the small-print and make sure your policy includes Covid Cover and Medical Repatriation.

WHAT TO BRING

Day bag:  You are also permitted to bring a day bag with a maximum 40 litre volume that you can carry in the overhead luggage rack or under your seat on the vehicle with you.

Kindle: Optional but great to keep all your travel guides and books in one place.

Ipad/Tablet: not a necessity but most places have WiFi available these days so having your own Ipad or Tablet will enable you to stay connected.

WHAT TO EXPECT

This Dragoman small group tour is for travellers seeking an adventurous yet comfortable vacation where your tour leader does all the planning to ensure you get to enjoy yourself as much as possible. On this trip our group size is a maximum of 16 travellers of all ages and nationalities. We use local trains, buses and ferries to reach our destinations quickly and we stay in 3 & 4 star hotels, local guest houses and traditional ryokans to ensure your comfort at all times. This tour is meticulously planned to ensure you visit the highlights of the countries we travel through at a leisurely pace and we also visit a couple of harder to reach destinations such as Jigokudani Monkey Park and Seoraksan National Park. If you are looking for a true adventure shared with a group of like-minded travellers then this Dragoman small group tour may be the trip for you!

At Dragoman we like to go through every aspect of the tour with you to ensure that you are as informed and prepared as possible. We believe in not only telling you about the highlights of the tour but also providing you with all the small details of what to expect as we know these are just as important. We want to explain the tour in as much detail as possible so that you are sure you are suited to one of our small group adventures. If after reading the information below you decide that this tour is not for you then, as long as it is within 14 days of your initial booking, you can cancel your booking and receive a full refund of all monies paid.

YOUR FELLOW TRAVELLERS

We have no age restrictions on our small group tours and if there is one thing we have come to realise, it’s the mental attitude that counts the most. On this trip our group size is a maximum of 16 travellers of all ages and nationalities so you can expect to share this experience with a wide variety of characters from all walks of life.

Japan has 4 seasons, spring is from March to May, summer is from June to mid-September, autumn is from September to November and winter is from December to February.

Our popular Cherry Blossom tour in late March has a comfortable temperature so may be suited to people who don’t like it too hot or too cold.

Summer temperatures can soar up to 32°C so our summer tours are best suited to people who enjoy the sunshine.

Our autumn tours are popular because the temperatures are comfortable.

Winter can be very cold with a lot of snow so our winter tours are best enjoyed by snow seekers.

You must maintain your own personal hygiene and ensure that you and your clothes are washed regularly. If anyone stinks or is noticeably unclean the tour leader will have a word with that person to ensure a decent level of personal hygiene is maintained by everyone on the tour.

SIGHTSEEING & ACTIVITIES

In Japan and South Korea your tour leader will arrange many short sightseeing tours, half day walking tours and a few bus tours. For most of the organised tours your tour leader will arrange a local guide to provide the history of the sites we visit. You are however free to go sightseeing on your own at your leisure if you prefer.

YOUR ATTITUDE

A friendly, easy-going attitude will help you enjoy this trip and ensure you are liked by your fellow travellers as well as the locals. The one thing that is extremely detrimental to any tour are people that constantly moan. It has nothing to do with age, gender or nationality, some people just like to find fault in everything and it’s always got to be someone’s fault. This type of constant negativity can be extremely detrimental within a small group so it may sound a bit harsh but by weeding out any moaners early on we can have a chat with them to try and ensure your tour is as good as it can be. We don’t hide anything so people who travel with us usually know exactly what to expect on this tour which makes for an enjoyable group experience.

Please be aware that if any particular person is constantly causing the rest of the group (or the crew) grief due to their behaviour they will be warned and then asked to leave the tour if nothing improves and no refund will be given. This is obviously the most extreme case but we will not let one or two rude individuals spoil it for everybody else. This is a once in a lifetime experience so let’s all enjoy it!

WHEN THINGS GO WRONG

When we are in Japan and South Korea things generally go to plan but if something unexpected does delay us or force us to change our itinerary please understand that sometimes things happen that are simply out of our control and we may have to make alternative arrangements. Please be prepared to expect the unexpected and accept that things might go wrong from time to time. An easy-going approach will help the situation immensely. Moaning about every little thing that doesn’t go our way will not! When situations arise where we can’t please everybody we always aim to please the majority of the group, not the individual.

TRAVEL TIMES & ITINERARIES

We have designed this tour so that we travel by day and arrive at our destinations before nightfall. On this tour it’s usually only a few hours between destinations and you have plenty of time to look around the sites.

We always strive to arrive at our destinations on time but our itinerary can change if an area of our route becomes off-limits for any reason, so in the unlikely event that we do experience any delays we will adjust our itinerary accordingly.

DRUGS & ALCOHOL

Please be aware that drugs such as marijuana and cocaine are illegal in Japan and South Korea and they could enforce severe punishment for being caught in possession. NEVER carry illegal drugs on your person or on the vehicle during this tour as you would not only jeopardise your own freedom but also the well-being of the entire group if you are caught in possession.

If you are caught in possession of illegal drugs on this tour you will be asked to leave the tour immediately and no refund will be given. Any such inconsideration can lead to the tour being cancelled and innocent people arrested. We will not hesitate to remove someone if we have to.

Aggressive or abusive drunk behaviour will not be tolerated during this tour and if anyone is constantly abusing alcohol and causing trouble we will not hesitate to remove them from the tour and no refund will be given.

You must be fairly fit and able to ensure you can participate in certain aspects of the tour such as carrying your bags to and from the transport services we utilise, carrying your bags to your room when arriving at hotels, walking around the sites we visit, getting on and off public transport services, etc. You do not need to be super fit by any means but if you want to do the longer walks you do need to be reasonably fit.

In Japan we use a mixture of bullet trains, direct local trains and the odd local bus service to get around the country at a leisurely pace during daylight hours. Local transport in Japan is always very comfortable.

In South Korea we use comfortable local buses to travel around during daylight hours with most journeys being just a few hours long.

We provide an average of one meal per day on this tour, usually breakfast at the hotels we stay at, so 26 breakfasts in total. Lunch and evening meals are at your own expense. Local food is generally cheap so if you are on a budget eat what the locals eat and you will be sure to get a real flavour of the country at a decent price.

Your tour leader will be in charge of routes, itineraries and accommodation and will ensure the smooth running of the tour.

Tipping your tour leader at the end of the tour is always appreciated if you feel they have done a good job. We recommend you tip your tour leader a minimum of $150 at the end of this tour. Thank you.

Best Time to Visit South Korea

Korea has four distinct seasons with spring (April – June) and autumn (late September-November) being the best for visitors. Spring flowers in April and May and autumn leaves in late October and early November will intoxicate nature lovers.

Korean winter is cold while summer hot and humid. Japan’s main island, Honshu, can be described the same way.

Japan tours by LaurusTravel.com - Himeji Castle

Best Time to Visit Japan

Climatic patterns in Japan are diverse ranging from subtropical islands in the south to sub-arctic winter temperatures in northern Hokkaido.

Like neighbouring Korean Peninsula and most of China, Honshu (literally “Main Island” or “Main Province”), the island we travel across, has cool and cold weather in winter (Jan-Mar). June and July is rainy season across Japan except Hokkaido – a popular destination for Japanese to escape summer heat. Autumn (September to mid-December) is usually cool and clear on Honshu. Cherry blossom season from late March to early April and the autumn foliage season (November) see huge influx of international visitors to join the large number of local vacationers on the move.

If you have a choice, you should stay away from Japan during their Golden Week holiday (end of April to early May) when hotels and air flights get incredibly expensive. For the high prices, you’d be rewarded with overcrowding at all the tourist sites – a phenomenon that rivals China’s National Day holiday week (Oct 1-6).

Winter (Jan-Mar) is supposed to be low season for Japan’s tourism industry, not anymore. The rapid rise of middle class throughout Asia and the decline of the Japanese Yen against so many currencies in the past few years ensure Japan is overrun with international visitors all year round. That said, in winter hotels, the single biggest budget item for many, can be had for less than half of the price of high season.

Best time to See Cherry Blossoms

In general, the milder the climate, the earlier the cherry trees bloom. In subtropical Okinawa you’ll see cherry blossoms opening up as early as January while in Hokkaido you’ll have to wait till May.

In most of the cities on our itineraries, the cherry blossom season lasts from late March to early April for about two weeks. However, in the mountainous areas such as Mt. Fuji and Hakone outside Tokyo, Shirakawa-go near Kanazawa, and Arashiyama on the western edge of Kyoto, cherry blossoms are still abundant in late April due to cooler climate.

You’ll find beautiful cherry blossoms all over the Korean peninsula around the same time when cherry trees bloom on Japan’s Honshu Island.

Best Time for Autumn Foliage Viewing in Japan

This can be as early as mid-October and as late as late early December depending on where you go. If you go to Hokkaido, late September and the entire month of October would be ideal. However, in southwest Japan, you’d better wait till late October or early November.

Guests coming on our Japan tours in early October will get to see beautiful fall colours too. Inside Tokyo and Kyoto, you may have to wait till late October or November for the colours to peak, but at Mt. Fuji & Hakone (included in most of our Japan itineraries) and in Kyoto’s Arashiyama (Storm Mountain, included in all of our Japan itineraries), you’d be delighted by the autumn foliage as early as October. The same is true of Kanazawa and Takayama due to their elevations and proximity to the Sea of Japan which sends lots of cold air to these cities in the fall.

Japanese Golden Week

The public holiday stretches from April 29 to the first few days of May. This is one of the busiest times of year for Japanese to travel and every major tourist site is packed with visitors. That’s why we don’t offer Japan trips overlapping the Golden Week.

Testimonials

After exhaustively researching tours to Asia we decided to book a trip to China with Laurus. Several months prior to the trip we added on the 13 day Japan tour as it was a short flight away. This back to back was a leap of faith as we booked with Laurus based on reviews, the website and our interactions with Laurus. We made the right decision! The tours exceeded our expectations.

The tour of Japan was wonderful. Our guide Addy stayed with us for the entire tour and she was terrific. She didn’t just provide information, she kept us interested and even used sang with a samurai puppet. We were on the go all day long. The hotels were quite nice and centrally located. Most of the restaurants were small local places and the food was delicious. Highlights of the trip included meeting with a geisha, who spoke perfect English, visiting Nara and seeing the sika deer and going to Shirakawa-go.

Without any reservation I would highly recommend Laurus. They are genuinely concerned that you are given the best quality tour available at a reasonable price.

Maureen S and Larry L

Boynton Beach, Florida

As repeat customers (first to China, and now Japan), we recommend Laurus to other people interesting in exploring Asia. We have found the guides to be well-informed; the accommodations, excellent; and the service, high-quality. We were very fortunate to have met Julius Yan, the owner and founder of Laurus, on both of our tours. He traveled with us in Japan, and greatly enhanced our experience there. He is extremely dedicated to providing an outstanding and personal experience for his clients. He is well-versed in Asian history, and provided cultural and historical perspectives that added depth to our experience.

Suzanne B and Mark S

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

We arrived home yesterday safe and sound. Thank you for a wonderful tour in Japan!

Based on what we heard from our friends about their trip to Japan with your company last year we knew we had picked the right company in choosing Laurus Travel for our own Japan vacation. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Your company delivered as promised and then some. There is no doubt in our mind that we received superior value for our money. Upon checking with the others in the group, we learned that our fellow travelers all felt the same. Laurus Travel should be proud of itself because this is the opinion from a bunch of seasoned travelers who have gone on tours with a large number of tour companies.

Thank you again for a wonderful trip!

2-Week Japan and South Korea Itineraries: The Best 2 Options

Here are two itinerary options matching families' and couples' needs and covering the major attractions in Japan and South Korea.

1) A Classical Route (For Families)

This itinerary would be nice for a first family time in Japan and South Korea. It includes experiencing kid-favored animation elements, trying on kimonos, feeding deer in Nara, and, on the last 3 days, relaxing on the sandy beaches of Busan.

Here is a well-organized itinerary for your inspiration:

  • Days 1–3: Tokyo, Japan

Days 4–5: Hakone

Days 6–8: Kyoto

  • Day 9: Osaka and fly to Seoul in South Korea

Days 10–12: Seoul

Days 13–15: Busan

Days 1–3: Tokyo

Tokyo is the top city for entry into Japan, and international flights offer many options. Visit the historical Meiji Shrine, feel the Edo vibe and take a manpower rickshaw in Asakusa, and make sushi at a local home. For anime lovers, you can buy your favorite anime products in Akihabara and have a happy time in the Pokémon Center or J-World.

Spending a day in Disneyland or Disney Sea would be a good choice as well.

Hakone is the home of onsens (hot spring baths). Stay at a ryokan with an onsen to enjoy an incredibly relaxing time with your family, and visit Lake Ashi on a replica pirate ship.

Kyoto is an impressive medieval capital of Japan where geisha, sake, tea ceremonies, and ryokan stays are the essence of the city.

  • Visit the famous Fushimi Inari Shrine and orange-red torii gates to understand the history of Japanese shrines.
  • Have an afternoon tea with geishas in Gion District, and try on kimonos for memorable photos.
  • Sleep on a tatami at a ryokan to experience the best of traditional Japanese accommodation.
  • Participate in an authentic tea ceremony in a tea house.
  • Spending a day in Nara. Feeding the friendly deer at Nara Park could be a great family moment.

Day 9: Osaka

Sample delicious street food like takoyaki (octopus balls) in Dotonbori. Depart from Kansai International Airport and fly to Seoul, Korea.

Seoul is the energetic capital city of South Korea. Its Korean food and K-Pop are famous around the world.

Visit Seoul's biggest and oldest palace — Gyeongbok Palace, try on Hanbok and meander around the quiet Korean traditional village of Bukchon Hanok, have a full view of the city from Namsan, and sample delicious Korean rice cakes, bibimbap ('mixing rice'), or kimchi (Korean pickles).

Busan is the second-largest city in South Korea and a flourishing port city. Enjoy the comfortable sea breeze and feed seagulls in Haeundae, take a leisurely walk around Gamcheon Cultural Village with its multicolored houses, and visit Haedong Yonggung Temple — a Buddhist temple with stunning sea views.

2) A Route Full of Natural Beauty (For Couples)

For a couple (or family) who want to discover the deeper rural life in Japan and South Korea, this itinerary allows you to travel at a laid-back pace. Visit traditional villages in both countries, interact with locals, and see the World Natural Heritage on Jeju Island.

Here is a hand-picked itinerary summary with more detail following:

Days 4–6: Takayama, Shirakawa-go, Kanazawa

Days 7–9: Kyoto

  • Day 10: Osaka, fly to Seoul in South Korea

Days 11–13: Seoul

Days 14–15: Jeju Island

Tokyo has perfect blend of history and modernization. Try on samurai armor at Samurai Museum for a cool photo, sample freshly-prepared sashimi at Tsukiji Market, and visit a Japanese garden with amazing scenery.

Suggested day trips from Tokyo:

  • Spend a day at Fuji Five Lakes to see the spectacular Mount Fuji perfectly framed.
  • Relax in an onsen with your partner in Hakone.
  • Nagano is 200 km (130 miles) from Tokyo. You can see monkeys bathing in hot springs, and ski in winter (December to February).

Explore Japan's picturesque countryside away from the crowded cities.

  • Takayama: wander around the well-preserved townhouses and taste delicious Hida beef.
  • Shirakawa-go: View traditional Gassho-zukuri farmhouses. If you go in January or February, you can see their beautiful winter lighting.
  • Kanazawa: Purchase gold-leaf products and sample Japanese sake at a brewery.

To experience traditional history and culture in depth in Kyoto, the best ways are to see its shrines, meet its geishas, and stay at an authentic ryokan.

Appreciate the ancient atmosphere in Nijo Castle and Kinkaku Temple, meander around the Gion district to see the beautiful geishas in kimonos and enjoy a high-class Kaiseki at a ryokan.

Suggested day tours from Kyoto:

  • Arashiyama is definitely a good place to relax: medieval Tenryu Temple, lush bamboo groves, and the sightseeing train will make your trip worth it.
  • Nara is popular with travelers because you can feed the lovely deer at Nara Park.

Day 10: Osaka

Visit outstanding Osaka Castle, and leave from Kansai International Airport on a short flight to Seoul, Korea.

As the capital, Seoul contains all the essence of South Korea. Hike in scenic Bukhansan National Park, taste authentic Korean street food at local Gwangjang Market, and take a slow walk at Cheonggyecheon, which is quiet-but-huge recreation space in the downtown area.

Jeju Island, an island formed by volcanic activity, is a good place to relax. Enjoy a wonderful sunrise or sunset on Seongsan Ilchulbong ('Sunrise Peak') — a World Natural Heritage tuff cone, visit the Manjanggul lava cave, and walk on the sandy beaches to appreciate stunning sea views.

The above represents popular choice of attractions, but you can simply tell us your preferences and requirements , and we will customize a tour for you.

How Much Does 2 Weeks in Japan and South Korea Cost?

A 2-week tour of Japan and South Korea costs around US$9,000–10,000 per person based on a group of 2-4 people.

  • Private touring in Japan costs about US$350–500 per day per person, and the cost in South Korea is about US$400–500 per day per person, including 4-star hotels, full-day itinerary, tickets for attractions, private cars, and private guides.
  • Direct flights from Osaka to Seoul are about US$100–150.
  • Travel costs in peak times can be double, especially airfares and hotels. Thus, we recommend you plan ahead and book flights and hotels at least 6 months in advance.
  • It's worthwhile to try a night's stay in a traditional Japanese ryokan. They cost around US$300–450 per night.

We promise you a 100% refund of any payments made to Asia Highlights up to 3 weeks before departure ( details⇒ ).

Best Times to Travel to Japan and South Korea

Japan and South Korea have similar climates with four distinct seasons.

The best times to travel to both countries are in spring (April and May) and in autumn (September to October) , when you would enjoy pleasant temperatures, less rain, and the best scenery. In spring, you could appreciate blooming cherry blossom, and autumn is the time to enjoy red maples and golden gingkoes.

Summer (June to August) is hot, humid, and sometimes there are typhoons. But this won't affect a well-prepared and flexible journey too much, and prices are lower and attractions less crowded. Summer is the festival season in Japan, so you can experience a variety of lively festivals and fireworks shows.

November to March is cold and dry in most of Japan and South Korea. It's a good time to ski and soak in hot springs in northern Japan. Christmas and New Year is extremely busy in both countries; flights and hotels are easily booked up. So, we suggest you make reservations at least 6 months in advance for a festive-season stay. The weather is OK in November and March compared to summer and winter months, and prices are relatively cheap.

Japan, China, South Korea set 40 million tourist target

Tokyo's Asakusa area, a popular location among foreign tourists

Tourism ministers from Japan, China and South Korea said Wednesday that they aim to increase the annual number of tourists among the three countries to 40 million, or 10 million more than before the COVID-19 pandemic, by 2030.

It was the 10th meeting of the three countries' tourism ministers and the first since 2019. Wednesday's meeting brought together Japanese tourism minister Tetsuo Saito, Zhang Zheng, Chinese vice minister of culture and tourism, and South Korean Culture, Sports and Tourism Minister Yu In-chon.

The joint statement called for sharing each country's data on destinations and consumption in order to achieve the tourist target, while promoting travel to regional areas by working to increase direct flights from other countries.

The number of foreign visitors to Japan hit a monthly high of some 3.29 million in July, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization. Of the total, about half were from China and South Korea.

Meanwhile, the number of Japanese citizens traveling abroad is around just 60% of prepandemic levels.

The next three-way tourism ministers' meeting is set to be held in China in 2025.

Japan PM Kishida starts 2-day visit to South Korea on Friday

Summit with President Yoon Suk Yeol scheduled during the stay

SEOUL (Kyodo) -- Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida will make a two-day visit to South Korea from Friday and hold summit talks with President Yoon Suk Yeol, South Korea's presidential office said Tuesday.

Yoon and Kishida will "review the achievements of cooperation between the two countries thus far and discuss ways to enhance collaboration in bilateral, regional, and international arenas," the office said in a statement.

The Japanese premier has expressed his wish to visit South Korea as part of their top-level "shuttle diplomacy," according to the presidential office. In March last year, Kishida and Yoon agreed on resuming the reciprocal visits, with Yoon being the first South Korean leader to visit Japan in four years.

Kishida is set to step down as prime minister after his Liberal Democratic Party's leadership election on Sept. 27. During a press conference last week, Yoon said he would continue to work on enhancing bilateral relations with Kishida's successor.

Following Tuesday announcement from South Korea, Japan's Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshimasa Hayashi told a press conference in Tokyo, "Japan and South Korea are important neighbors that should address global challenges as partners."

Ahead of the 60th anniversary next year of the normalization of diplomatic ties, Japan will use Kishida's upcoming trip to enhance cooperation with South Korea "in a way that the peoples of both nations can feel its actual benefits," according to the top government spokesman.

Bilateral ties have improved since Seoul said in March 2023 that a South Korean government-backed foundation would compensate plaintiffs who won lawsuits against Japanese companies over forced labor during Japan's colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula.

Japan has said all issues stemming from its colonization of the Korean Peninsula were settled under a 1965 agreement normalizing ties with South Korea.

South Korea had opposed the listing of a gold and silver mine complex on Japan's Sado Island as a UNESCO World Heritage site over the wartime forced labor of Koreans. But UNESCO decided in July to list the mine complex after South Korea agreed, provided that Japan provided that Japan would provide an explanation of the "whole history" of the site.

FOUR HPU NURSING STUDENTS VISIT TOKYO ON CULTURAL IMMERSION TRIP

In the summer of 2024, four HPU nursing students—Mia Takahashi, Ashley Wright, Brooke Rathe, and Halo Yoshiki—had the unique opportunity to travel to Tokyo for a cultural immersion experience at Tokyo Women’s Medical University (TWMU). Accompanied by HPU nursing faculty member Jo Wakayama, MN, APRN, FNP, the week-long trip allowed everyone to observe healthcare practices in Japan and engage in an international collaboration with students from Ewha Womans University in Seoul, South Korea.

HPU School of Nursing Dean Edna Magpantay-Monroe, Ed.D., APRN, CMDCP, emphasized the importance of international experiences for nursing students. “Experiential learning that includes cultural immersion is essential for the growth of any future nurse,” she said. “At HPU, we often have cultural immersion with universities in the Asian region like Japan, Vietnam, and Korea. These experiences can be humbling and rewarding. We hope to continue and expand these experiences with our nursing and public health students and create interprofessional collaborations with other colleges within the university.”

Wakayama shared that her most memorable moment on the trip was when the Japanese, Korean, and HPU students each presented a brief report on aging in their respective countries, and how health care is responding to the needs of geriatric patients. “Seeing the students intently compare and contrast facts and ideas just thrilled all of the instructors. And they got along famously, sharing every bit of international information they could in that short period of time. It would be wonderful if all nations could be that way,” she said.

Takahashi reflected on how the trip helped her connect her personal and professional interests. “It was a privilege to participate in HPU’s nursing program at Tokyo Women’s Medical University,” Takahashi said. “My unique background—being born and raised in Hawai‘i with Japanese heritage and prior study abroad experiences in South Korea—allowed me to connect deeply with the diverse work cultures and gain valuable insights into issues related to the aging community and ongoing medical advancements.”

Takahashi also appreciated the opportunity to build friendships across borders. “The combined experience across TWMU, Ewha, and HPU enriched my understanding of the similarities and differences in each school’s approach to healthcare. I also forged meaningful friendships with students from TWMU and Ewha,” she added.

Wright spoke about the insights she gained during the exchange. “It was an honor to join some of my classmates on a trip to Tokyo for a five-day student exchange,” Wright said. “We toured the various facilities associated with TWMU, allowing us to compare their facilities with our own. I learned that Japan provides universal healthcare, and that nursing scope of practice can vary between different countries.”

For Wright, the connections formed during the trip were a highlight of the experience. “What I appreciated most were the relationships we formed. I truly enjoyed how three groups of women from different countries came together to learn from and grow with each other.”

Rathe reflected on how the trip expanded her professional perspective. “I am grateful to have visited TWMU in Tokyo, where we toured the Adachi medical hospital, clinics, and parliament building,” she said. “It was a pleasure to connect with the TWMU students about their best practices and learn more about their cultural expectations and views on healthcare.”

Rathe was particularly impressed by the facilities at TWMU. “I was amazed by how advanced their facilities were and how kind and welcoming the Japanese culture is,” she noted. “Taking what I’ve learned and experienced from this opportunity will be an invaluable asset moving forward in my professional nursing career.”

Adding her perspective, Yoshiki described how the experience deepened her understanding of global healthcare practices. “Having the opportunity to experience a top-tier educational university like Tokyo Women’s Medical University was highly insightful and eye-opening,” Yoshiki shared. “As a nursing student, I am grateful to have made connections with other passionate nursing students on an international level, including Ewha Women’s University’s nursing students. Understanding the similarities and differences between our countries’ medical fields keeps me engaged and motivated as we work to enhance patient-centered care and advance the medical field overall. Visiting the Adachi Medical Center was a pivotal learning moment for me, as I experienced advanced technology that made healthcare staff’s jobs more fluent and observed the staff working collaboratively to help their patients.”

Tokyo Women’s Medical University was established in 1900 and has a long history of educating women in medicine. Originally founded as Tokyo Women’s Medical School, the institution’s mission has always been to train women to become physicians with strong knowledge, skills, and a commitment to serving society. The university expanded its mission in 1998 with the establishment of its School of Nursing, furthering its goal of producing highly skilled medical and nursing professionals who can contribute to the healthcare field globally.

For the HPU nursing students, this cultural immersion trip to Japan was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to observe international medical practices, build lasting international friendships, and gain a deeper understanding of the cultural nuances that impact healthcare. It represents HPU’s continued dedication to offering students global learning experiences that shape their personal and professional development.
