Visiting the Wow Museum in Zurich (Worth It?)
The Wow Museum in the center of Zurich is full of surprising illusions, games, and interactive areas. It is a mixture of science, psychology, and fun that anyone from kids to adults can enjoy. For many visitors to this town, it is one of the most fun things to do in Zurich .
The makers of the museum have worked hard to bring you a whole range of “wow moments” from the moment you enter the museum. From rooms of illusions to the Wonder Lab upstairs, you could spend hours in there.
Since I last took my godson to the Zurich Tram Museum , I don’t think he has had as much fun in a local museum as this!

Our Experience in the Wow Museum – A Review
We went to the Wow Museum with our nearly 6-year-old godson and were not sure what to expect. You enter the museum through a small maze of mirrors, which gives you a taste of what is to come.
Rooms of Illusions
The main floor of the Wow Museum is filled with a range of visual illusions. Using mirrors and other tricks of your perception, they have managed to build a fun and interactive experience. Some of the fun illusions you will see include losing yourself in infinity, going upside down, questioning your size, and many more.
Some are more impressive and surprising than others. And some require a little patience and extra help to fully understand. However, if you go in there with children, or at least a child-like open mind, you will enjoy most of what you see.
It is a little more challenging with younger kids, especially if they are hyperactive at times. But our godson enjoyed his time exploring and discovering and sometimes was quite shocked at what he found.
There is also a dark room with four different light and sound shows that was also quite impressive. You can see one image at the start of this post. Our godson was also quite taken aback by it. Partly from the show, partly from the open floor with mirrors that made it quite an immersive experience. The only challenge was getting it to start via all the QR codes and your phone, something that could definitely be improved.
The Wonder Lab
Upstairs in the Wonder Lab things get a little more complex and I would say this area is more for adults or older children. There are a few things that young kids can enjoy, but most are too complex or require too much patience.
However, with so many other things to enjoy downstairs on the main floor and basement, this did not bother us. We will come back again when he is a few years older.
There were exhibits and illusions hanging on the wall, as well as a range of panels to explore and games to try. It is a place you could spend a lot of time if you have an interest in illusions. Some people seemed to be in there for hours!
The Hidden World of Willow (Great For Young Kids)
One of the great things they do for kids at the Wow Museum is called “the hidden world of willow”. I actually did not notice it at first, and the museum staff forgot to mention it, but ask when you go.
There are 5 places around the museum where there are tiny rooms and places where a small character Willow (approx 7cm tall) lives. Our godson was actually more excited about that than many of the other exhibits, so maybe your child will be too.
You can also spot Willow throughout the entrance area as they have scattered him about the place, sometimes in some very odd places!
They also have a fun Lego Wall in red (the museum color) which people enjoy playing on at the end. It is right by the cloakroom and kids seemed to spend ages here constructing Lego coming out of the wall, sideways!
Want To Save This For Later?
We'll email this post to you, so you can come back to it later!
Is The Wow Museum Worth It?
The Wow Museum is worth it if you enjoy science and psychology and are open to learning and thinking during your visit. It is more suited to older children and adults, however, some younger children will still enjoy themselves.
If you have a lot of experience or background in illusions then you won’t find much new here. Some reviews I read online showed people were disappointed but as someone with a technical background, I still enjoyed it. Even though it could have been done better in some areas (more on that below).
The price is certainly not cheap, but this is Zurich and nothing is cheap really. Some other museums might be cheaper, but this is more of an experience than your usual museum, so the price was ok for us.
Here are some quick pros and cons we found overall:
- Lots of visual illusions and fun experiences
- Enough things to keep you busy for 1-2 hours
- A good mix of things for kids and adults
- There could be more space for the number of people (it was not overly crowded though given it was a cold weekend)
- A lot of things need QR code scanning and a phone (not great for non-techy people/older people)
- More explanations could be given at each illusion, sometimes it was confusing and not clear
Overall, I would recommend the Wow Museum for anyone with an interest in science and illusions, but don’t expect it to be on par with a big science museum like Technorama in Winterthur

We had such a great time at this cool new “museum” that just opened in Zürich in June 2020. It has a bunch of “rooms of illusions” with all sorts of crazy optical illusions and interactive activities. The best part for our family was the photo rooms, where you can capture animated GIFs of you inside weird environments, like the one below. My kids wanted to do this over and over.
People of all ages, from young children to teens to adults, will have fun here. It’s very sensory oriented and doesn’t require much explanation, which means young kids can easily engage and enjoy the experience without understanding what’s really going on. The staff are ready to help and very friendly, giving you special insight on various installations and even doing magic tricks, which was a big hit with my kids. I’d plan for about 90 mins and encourage you to take your time, not hurry through each room.
Getting There
Opening times, tips for your visit, around the museum, you might also like…, pin this for later….
Thanks to WOW Museum for hosting our visit. All opinions expressed here are our own.
It’s best to come by public transportation since the WOW Museum is right in the center of Zürich city next to the main train station.
By public transportation: The museum is very close to Zürich HB, as shown on the map below. If you are coming by tram, the closest tram stops are Bahnhofstrass/HB and Bahnhofquai/HB .
By car: If you are arriving by car, Parkhaus Urania is the closest. It’s a 5 min walk to the museum as shown below.
This new museum is permanent, not a temporary installation. It’s open Wed to Sun at the following times (closed Mon and Tues).
Mon 10:00 – 20:00 Tues closed Wed 10:00 – 20:00 Thu 10:00 – 20:00 (15% reduced entry fee) Fri 10:00 – 22:00 Sat 9:00 – 22:00 Sun 9:00 – 20:00
Since time slots do sell out, it’s best to book your tickets online. You can enter the museum anytime during your hour time slot. Plan to spend about 60-90 mins in the museum.
In 2023, tickets cost Adult CHF 23, Students CHF 19, Child (6-16) CHF 16, Child (2-5) CHF 5, under 2 free. They offer a family ticket for CHF 73 that includes 2 adults and up to 4 children aged 6 to 16. Discount with Zürich Card. Thursdays are 15%
At first I thought it was little pricey for a family outing. But honestly, we were fully entertained for almost 2 hours and we had lots of great interactions together, making a lot of great shared memories.
Definitely bring your fully-charged phone. Many room have you scan a QR code to activate a special photo booth, then you can download the photos. The museum provides free Wi-fi, necessary when you are in the underground floors that have poor cell coverage. Older kids will want their phones too because there are lots of fun photo activities throughout the museum.
When you enter the museum, you get this little card. There are 12 illusion puzzles scattered through the museum. You enter your answers on this card then turn it in at the end for a chance to win a prize. The puzzles are tricky but not impossible. The staff are happy to help you answer them because it’s just for fun, not to drive you crazy.
If you are bringing a stroller, but you’ll need to leave it in the coat room as some of the rooms and corridors are narrow and there are stairs.
They have lockers with a key in the coat room. I recommend storing as much of your stuff as possible so you can be mostly hands-free during your visit and be able to more freely interact with the exhibits.
The museum does not have a cafe, but there are lots of restaurants and fast food options in the vicinity, especially in the train station.
Most of the rooms are so multi-dimensional that a flat photo doesn’t capture at all what it feels like. But I’ll try my best. Some of the photo booths do animated GIFs that capture the illusion better than a pic. So definitely choose the GIF option when using the photo booths. We could have done this all day. The kids kept chanting: “Again! Again! Again!”
Some of the rooms have funny shapes and mirrors that distort proportions. We took a lot of pics in these trying to capture the feeling but it’s much much weirder than it looks in the pics.
This was one of our favorite rooms. The big green wall on the right is actually the floor. You can activate the photo booth and do crazy poses, then download your pics.
Our other favorite room was the “intersteller” infinity space room. You just have experience it! It looks and feels like you are floating in space – loved loved loved it! On the right, my kids had fun doing spider hands in the kaleidoscope.
There are lots of clever visual tricks like this ladder that looks like it goes into pool. My son wasn’t sure he could step on it.
My kids were obsessed with this lego wall and insisted on writing our blog name on it.
Mirror tricks in many rooms.
There’s a tiny elf named Willow that lives at the museum and if you look closely you can see his footprints, tiny office and other evidence hidden around the museum. This is a fun extra for little kids.
Upstairs you’ll find the “lab” where there are some hands-on activities and smaller visual illusions that aren’t completely immersive like other rooms.
We really bonded as a family during our visit, always my goal for a family outing. I hope you enjoy it.

The WOW Museum
We Love Illusions!
Illusions are fascinating phenomena that challenge the limits of our perception. They invite us to question the world around us. They arise when our senses, particularly vision, are deceived by certain stimuli in a way that goes beyond our expectations or our logical understanding of reality. Examples include optical and acoustic illusions. In short: sensory perceptions that deceive us. The WOW Museum is a lively and dynamic space that combines art, science and technology. Unique and immersive experiences are created. Thanks to our central location near Marienplatz in Munich, you can easily integrate a visit at WOW Museum on your city trip. On two floors, in 16 theme rooms and the Wonder Lab, we offer a variety of installations. Visitors' perceptions and senses are challenged. From optical illusions and fascinating lighting effects to interactive works of art, the museum offers a wide range of experiences that inspire curiosity.
Edutainment for everyone
A key aspect of the WOW Museum is promoting collaborative experiences. Our guests are encouraged to interact with the exhibits and create their own illusions. This interactive component not only boosts creativity and experimentation, but also allows you to create unique and memorable moments that can be shared with friends, family, or colleagues. The museum serves as a platform for personal discovery and for collaborative experiences across all age groups. We offer the opportunity to explore the museum with your own smartphone or tablet in order to discover, document and share it easily. Not enough yet? In Zurich, we also offer a city walk beyond the limits of museum spaces with the City Rally. Explore new perspectives of Zurich's old town on your smartphone, where illusions can be experienced in a fun and outdoorsy way. The idea for the museum was born from the desire to create a place in city centers that combine fun, learning, culture.. The vision was to make edutainment accessible to everyone. In collaboration with the agency Aroma, the WOW Museum finally became a reality, so that it opened its doors to visitors in 2020. In summer 2024, we will go one step further and open the second WOW Museum in the heart of Munich.
“The WOW Museum aims to be a unique place of inspiration and creative development that takes people of all ages into the fascinating world of illusion.”
