7 thrilling tiger safaris that offer the best of wildlife in India: Best time to visit, what to do and more

7 thrilling tiger safaris that offer the best of wildlife in India

Wildlife tiger safaris in India provide a thrilling opportunity to witness the Bengal tiger in its natural habitat. India’s dedication to tiger conservation is exemplified by Project Tiger, initiated in 1973 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change to protect these endangered big cats. As of March 2024, Project Tiger encompasses 55 protected areas, safeguarding nearly 75 per cent of the world's wild tiger population, with an estimated 3,682 tigers in the wild. Currently, there are more than 50 tiger reserves in the country, but this article narrows down seven best places that offer a high chance of spotting this majestic creature.

Before we get into that, understand a few basic ground rules when embarking on this wildlife adventure. When going for tiger safaris , maintain silence, respect park rules, and avoid disturbing wildlife. Do not use flash photography or make loud noises, ensuring a respectful and memorable safari experience.

The most unique feature of Bandhavgarh National Park is its reputation for having the highest density of tigers in the world. This makes it an incredibly attractive location for tiger spotting and has earned it the title "Tiger Capital of India". Your chances of a sighting soar near water bodies, especially during the sweltering summer months when tigers take a dip to cool off. For the ultimate tiger safari, plan your visit between October and June, with peak sightings from April to June as the heat drives tigers to watering holes. Bandhavgarh isn't just about tigers; the park is a veritable wonderland of wildlife, perfect for every nature enthusiast.

Ranthambore National Park in Rajasthan is a premier destination for tiger spotting, blending rich history with abundant wildlife. One truly unique feature of Ranthambore National Park is the presence of the Ranthambore Fort, a historic 10th-century fort that sits prominently atop a hill overlooking the park. The park’s landscape, dotted with ancient ruins and picturesque lakes, provides an ideal habitat for tigers. You can often see these majestic creatures lounging near water bodies or among the historic remnants of the Ranthambore Fort. The best time to visit for tiger sightings is from October to June, with the peak period being April to June.

Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh, the inspiration behind The Jungle Book , is a top destination for tiger spotting. This well-managed park, with its dense sal and bamboo forests, meadows, and streams, offers an ideal habitat for tigers. Unlike other parks known primarily for tigers, Kanha boasts the distinction of being the "Land of the Barasingha". The Barasingha, a majestic swamp deer with impressive antlers, is a threatened species that finds refuge in Kanha's grasslands and meadows. This focus on a unique herbivore sets Kanha apart from other tiger reserves. While Kanha has a healthy tiger population, the park's dedication to the conservation and celebration of the Barasingha makes it a truly special place.

Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand, India's oldest national park, is a prime location for tiger spotting. It also stands out for allowing overnight stays in designated zones, unlike most Indian parks that require visitors to leave by nightfall. This feature lets tourists stay in lodges or camps after dark, offering a unique chance to experience the park’s nocturnal activity and hear the calls of tigers and other wildlife under the stars. The best time to visit for tiger sightings is from November to June, with the peak period being from March to June when tigers are more active and the vegetation is sparser, making sightings easier.

In Maharashtra , Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve is a renowned place to spot a tiger. But this park’s unique feature is related to its vegetation: the prevalence of massive Arjun trees. These giants stand out amongst the typical teak forests found in other tiger reserves. Particularly impressive are the Arjun trees clustered around the Panchadhara waterhole. Their presence not only adds a distinct visual element to the landscape but may also provide specific ecological benefits for the park's inhabitants. The best time to visit for tiger sightings is from October to June, with peak visibility from March to May, when the tigers are drawn to water sources to escape the heat.

Pench National Park's captivating tapestry of teak forests and sprawling grasslands carves the perfect sanctuary for India's striped royalty. Tiger sightings here are a frequent occurrence, particularly around the park's scenic waterholes and sun-dappled clearings. For the most rewarding encounter with these magnificent predators, plan your visit between November and June. However, the true magic unfolds from February to April. Pench also has a literary connection to Rudyard Kipling's famous novel: The Jungle Book . The park served as a major inspiration for Kipling's timeless stories, with many locations within Pench directly referenced in the book. Mowgli's adventures unfold in the very jungles you can explore, making Pench a living embodiment of Kipling's beloved characters and world.

Nestled in the Western Ghats, the park's lush forests, grasslands, and picturesque streams create an ideal habitat for tigers. Bandipur National Park stands out for its contribution to wildlife conservation on a grand scale. Unlike isolated reserves, Bandipur forms a crucial part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve, a vast network of interconnected parks and sanctuaries. This connectivity provides vital corridors for animals like tigers and elephants, allowing them to roam freely and maintain healthy populations. The reserve also encompasses a wider range of habitats, from dry forests to mountain ecosystems, benefiting a broader spectrum of species. Bandipur's significance lies not just in its own beauty but in its role as a cornerstone of a thriving ecological network.

Best 7 National Parks for Tiger Safaris in India (Tips & Map)

India is the best place to see wild tigers. It enjoys 70% of the world's tiger population and has over 50 tiger reserves.

If you are a wildlife and nature lover, don't miss a wildlife safari tour in one of India's national parks.

The majestic Bengal tigers are the main stars — one of the top-draw animals for safari-goers, but you will also enjoy an array of other wild animals and the grasslands.

Jeep safaris, the most popular way to see the Bengal tigers in their natural habitat, are available in almost all of the national parks across India.

Read on for more information about tiger safaris in India covering the best national parks, best times, and other tips.

  • Best 7 National Parks for Tiger Safaris

How to Choose a Tiger Safari

A sample india itinerary with a tiger safari, the best time for a tiger safari in india, 1. ranthambore national park — most popular.

Ranthambore National Park is one of the biggest and best national parks for spotting wild tigers and other animals, such as jungle cats and Indian foxes.

It is close to Agra and Jaipur. The convenient location makes it easy to include in a classic golden triangle trip (of Delhi, Agra, and Jaipur).

Moreover, Ranthambore National Park features sparse forest cover and open grassy meadows. A wider and unobstructed view increases the chance of seeing a tiger .

  • How to get there: about 170 km from Jaipur (3½ hours' driving)
  • Location: Rajasthan (a state in northwest India)

Get more information about How to Plan a Trip to Rajasthan 2024 (Beyond Itinerary Tips)

2. Kanha National Park — Most Wildlife

Kanha National Park is considered the largest national park in Madhya Pradesh (central India).

if you are interested in seeing more varied wildlife and a scenic jungle landscape, Kanha National Park is a good choice.

The dense forest, which provides good shelter for its tigers, may lead to less chance to spot a tiger.

  • How to get there: 2 hours' flying form Delhi to Swami Vivekananda International Airport and 4½–5 hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Madhya Pradesh (a state in central India)

3. Bandhavgarh National Park — Highest Density of Tigers

Bandhavgarh National Park is another popular national park for tiger safaris in Madhya Pradesh.

Bandhavgarh National Park offers the best chance of seeing tigers as it has a higher density of tigers. So, it is also a good choice if you are aiming at spotting tigers (and quickly). It is more remotely located than Ranthambhore and Kandha.

Besides Bengal tigers, it boasts a tremendous amount of species like the Indian guar, the world's largest bovine. You can also enjoy a guided walking safari to explore nature (not the tigers!) from up close.

  • How to get there: 1½ hours' flying from Delhi to Jabalpur Airport and 3½–4 hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Madhya Pradesh (the state in central India)

4. Jim Corbett National Park — Rich Activities

Jim Corbett National Park is India's oldest national park, where you can find every geographical landscape , from marshy swamps to hills, from riverine belts to lakes.

Though it has over 200 tigers, it is not easy to see them in the dense foliage. It is more for wildlife and nature lovers than tiger sightseeing.

It is also the one of the only national parks in India where you have the opportunity to stay inside the park in over-100-year-old forest lodges.

Apart from tiger safaris, you can enjoy other outdoor activities like nature walks, cycling, river rafting, and rope courses.

  • How to get there: about 250 km from Delhi (5 hours' driving)
  • Location: Uttarakhand (a state in central north India)

5. Tadoba National Park — Night Safaris

Satpura National Park is notably Maharashtra's (the state in central west India's) oldest and largest national park.

Tadoba National Park is not as big, but has one of the highest populations of tigers in India . This means you would have a good chance of seeing a tiger.

Tadoba National Park also offers a night safari experience, which allows you to observe nighttime wildlife like rusty-spotted cats, civets, and a variety of owls.

There is also good chance to see the shy sloth bear and wild dogs. You can also find some of the Central India's best native woodland bird species in this forest.

  • How to get there: 1½-2 hours' flying from Delhi to Nagpur and 2½ hours' driving from the airport
  • Location: Maharashtra (a state in central west India)

6. Satpura National Park — Less Crowded

Satpura National Park is a relatively less-crowded park for tiger safaris, so it is no struggle to get safari tickets, except during festivals or New Year weekends.

The tiger population in the park is thought to be around 50, but they are sometimes more elusive. Leopards, gaurs (the largest of oxes), wild dogs, and sloth bears are seen more frequently.

There you can also do a walking safari, canoeing, birding, etc.

  • How to get there: 1½ hours' flying from Delhi to Bhopal Airport and about 3½-4 hours' driving (190 km)

7. Sasan Gir National Park — for Lion Safaris

What makes Gir National Park special is that it is the only place in the world outside Africa where a lion can be seen in its natural habitat.

There you can go on a lion safari by jeep to spot lions roaming free in the wild. You can also see leopards, different species of deer, Chowsingha — the world's only four-horned antelope, jackals, and many other animals, though no tigers.

  • How to get there: about 2 hours' flying from Delhi to Rajkot Airport and about 2 hours' driving (100 km)
  • Location: Gujarat (westernmost state in India)

See how to combine the tiger safari with other highlights from our itinerary ideas for  9 days ,  10 days , 11 days , 12 days , and  2 weeks .

There are three main factors you should consider when choosing a park for a tiger safari — the ease of getting there, the possibility of seeing a tiger, and the scenery of the park.

Bandhavgarh National Park, Ranthambore National Park, and Tadoba National Park will give you a better chance to see a tiger. Among them, Ranthambore is most recommended as it is easier to get to.

If you'd enjoy dense forest scenery more than the sighting of a tiger in open grassland scenery, with rivers, lush greenery, and other outdoor activities, Jim Corbett National Park, Kanha National Park, and Satpura National Park could be better choices for you.

If you would like a uniquely special experience (and if you are already in the Gujarat area of west India), an Indian lion safari in Sasan Gir National Park may be perfect for you.

We can help you book a tiger safari tour and arrange the transport for you. Just contact us .

For first-timers, the classic route with a tiger safari includes Delhi, Agra, Jaipur, and Ranthambore National Park, covering India's most iconic monuments and mesmerizing landscapes with a search for wild tigers on the way.

The trip usually takes about 9 days. Here is the sample itinerary:

  • Days 1–2: Delhi sightseeing (the iconic temples, tombs, and local markets)
  • Days 3–4: Head to Agra; Agra sightseeing (the Taj Mahal, baby Taj, Agra Fort)
  • Day 5: Drive from Agra to Ranthambore; see the abandoned Mughal city of Fatehpur Sikri on the way
  • Day 6: A tiger safari in Ranthambore National Park
  • Days 7–8: Head to Jaipur; Jaipur sightseeing (the ancient palaces and a cooking class)
  • Day 9: Back to Delhi for your departure

If you are interested in the itinerary, check out our 9-Day India Golden Triangle with Tiger Safari Tour for more details. You can also contact us for any questions or needs. All our tours can be adjusted to your requirements.

Most national parks are open from mid-October to June and are closed during the monsoon season from July to early October.

For those who are especially interested in a tiger safari , the best time to visit the national parks is from April to June . This is due to drier weather conditions, making it easier for you to have the chance to spot the tigers, as they come out searching for water.

The cooler months from late November to February are the most comfortable time to visit, with pleasant midday temperatures, but vegetation remains dense and can make wildlife spotting challenging.

The 10 Best Tiger Safaris in India (+ the Best National Park in Nepal for Tiger Safaris)

Sharing is caring!

Tiger walking on the path

Netflix docuseries Tiger King burst onto our screens like a meth lab explosion. Watching this show about human greed and violence among a bunch of hillbilly meth addicts (with a supposed love for big cats) only left me feeling sorry for the animals. On the plus side, Tiger King has raised awareness of all the tigers living in captivity in the USA. Call me naive but I thought the tiger in The Hangover was just a movie stunt. So where do you go to see wild tigers? India is the best place to see tigers in the wild. India claims to have about 3000 wild tigers (about 70%) of the approximately 4000 worldwide wild tiger population. A tiger safari in India is a major undertaking so we’ve  asked our travel blogger friends for advice on the best places to see tigers in India. Here’s our list of the 10 best tiger safaris in India as well as the best national park in Nepal for tiger safaris.

Tigers in Zoos

Generally I am not a fan of zoos. I find them depressing because no matter how much space the animals have, they are still not free. Having been in a Coronavirus lockdown for weeks, I feel even more strongly that animals shouldn’t be in enclosures.

On the other hand, zoos do serve the purpose of education and research. We had a family pass to the London Zoo when my kids were younger because my children love animals. We’d go every week and check out what the animals were up to and then go to the playground in the zoo. I know my brother and his family have yearly passes to the Philadelphia Zoo. Lots of families visit the zoo. I’m not judging.

How cool is this albino tiger we saw at the animal zoo of Lora Parque in Tenerife?

We saw this rare albino tiger at a zoo in Tenerife.

For my children, the love of (and respect for) animals started with our family dog. Then visiting zoos and rescue centres only cemented how cool wild animals are. So, although not my preference, I understand why families visit zoos.

TripAdvisor

Captive Tigers in the USA

There are more captive tigers in the USA alone than there are tigers in the wild in the entire world.

Where do wild animals really NOT belong?  Roadside animal attractions, private zoos, psuedo-sanctuaries, malls, small New York City apartments, Las Vegas hotel rooms etc.

I kid you not.

The Tiger King series showed how they would smuggle baby tigers into Vegas hotel rooms in carry-on luggage. Apparently it is a real babe magnet.

There’s also Ming the Tiger who lived in a Harlem apartment with Al the Alligator and their human companion. The neighbours never told the authorities because snitches get stitches. That worked until the human caretaker  got bit and had to get stitches himself.

If you don’t have the resources to watch wild animals in the wild, please go to a conventional zoo instead of local animal menageries or roadside zoos.

Why Take Tiger Safaris?

The thrill of spotting a tiger in the wild after painstakingly looking for them is much cooler than having them paraded in front of you at a zoo. Unless you are three years old, you should appreciate that anticipation is half the thrill of wildlife encounters.

Tigers are majestic and endangered. You may not actually see a tiger but you will have a wonderful time on tiger safaris trying.

Beautiful Sumatran tiger crouching on a rock

Sumatra, an Indonesian Island, is the habitat for Sumatran Tigers of which only a few hundred may exist.

On the point of endangered species, some Mr. Know-Nothing Conservation on the Tiger King show said that raising tigers was helping their endangered status by repopulating them.

No. Tigers born in captivity can only be kept in zoos.

Tigers with too much human interaction can’t be reintroduced into the wild. Think about it – Tony the Tiger from Oklahoma is used to expired Walmart meat. What’s he going to do in an Indonesian jungle?

And, Mr. Know-Nothing Conservation doesn’t mention that tigers in captivity often get killed when they are no longer useful props for their humans.

Where To See Tigers in the Wild

Tigers are found mostly in Asia. With the biggest population of wild tigers, India is the best place to see tigers in the wild.

We were lucky enough to see tigers at Ranthambore National Park in the state of Rajasthan in India. Our guide took us for three days on daily tiger safaris. On the third day we struck lucky and saw a pair of relatively young tigers. They were playing and not doing a good job of staying hidden. The guide suggested that the mother tiger was off hunting for the family meal.

We stayed at the absolutely amazing Oberoi Vanyvilas Wildlife Resort which is a luxury tented camp with amazing facilities.  A few miles away from Ranthambore, we have friends who stayed at the Aman-I-Khas Luxury Resort as well (and yes, they too saw tigers on their wildlife safaris in India).

Tiger walking on the path

India is the best place to see tigers because about 50% of the world’s wild tigers live on the Indian subcontinent.

Like the Ellie Cleary below, we also went to Periyar National Park in the state of Kerala for another round of wildlife safaris in India. We saw no tigers but we did see plenty of other wildlife, took the obligatory boat trip and experienced an Ayurveda massage. We stayed at Spice Village near Periyar which is a beautiful eco-friendly hotel set amidst the tea plantations of the area.

Here are several other travel bloggers with their suggestion on where you can see tigers in the wild.

Where To See Tigers in India

With around 3000 tigers spread amongst them, the best places to see tigers in India tend to be the national parks of India. On a tiger safari India offers a choice of transportation options – the usual jeep, or a canoe or even walking.

Tiger Safari in India: Bandhavgarh National Park

Like many people, seeing a tiger in the wild was something I wanted to experience for a long time. I finally got my chance when I went on a tour of the tiger reserves of Madhya Pradesh.

On my very first wildlife safari, which was in Bandhavgarh National Park , I was having tea with the naturalist, Naresh “Gudda” Singh, when he heard a growl. We slammed down our cups, leapt into the Gypsy, and drove along the road until we came to an abrupt halt.

I will never know how Gudda knew exactly where to stop … but seconds later, a young male tiger walked nonchalantly out of the forest and right towards us. It was an amazing sighting and of course I will never forget it.

I’ve been back to Bandhavgarh several times since then, and I have always managed to see tigers, every time. Bandhavgarh, one of India’s premier tiger reserves, always included in the list of places where you have a better chance of seeing a tiger in the wild. All ages can book jeep safaris, or a canter, and children under five are free.

Tiger Safari in India: Bandipur Tiger Reserve

Bandipur Tiger Reserve is located around 213kms from Bangalore in Chamrajanagar district of Karnataka. The reserve comes under the Project Tiger and was established in 1974. It is also a part of the Nilgiri Biosphere reserve.

The reserve has regular van and jeep safaries which can be taken by both adults and kids. We stayed at the Bandipur Safari Lodge which is closer to the Bandipur safari pickup point. We couldn’t see any tigers but could spot some elephants, deer and peacocks. The overall experience of taking wildlife safaris in India was amazing.

Tiger Safari in India: Kanha National Park

When we talk about national parks of India where we can see tigers, Kanha National park in Madhya Pradesh is the first that comes to my mind. Popularly known as a Tiger reserve, this national park is declared as one of the finest wildlife zones in the world and also inspired author Rudyard Kipling to write his famous book “ Jungle Book “.

We were lucky to get a tiger sighting in our first tiger safari itself, but sometimes it takes a few more before you can spot them. We would suggest to stay calm, maintain silence and follow the rules of the jungle .

We stayed at Kanha Earth Lodge which is a luxury hotel in the jungle with a swimming pool and other amenities. We could see families coming there to spend a few days of summer. The nearest airport to Kanha is Jabalpur which is an easy flight from Mumbai or New Delhi.

Tiger Safari in India: Manas National Park

Manas Wildlife Sanctuary enjoys the rare distinction of being a national park, a Project Tiger reserve, UNESCO Natural World Heritage site, an elephant reserve and a biosphere reserve in Assam. What makes it unique is the fact that the park stretches all the way to Bhutan where it is called the Royal Manas National Park.

Home to among the last remaining natural tropical evergreen forests in India, this place is a must-visit for wildlife enthusiasts. I went on a jeep safari and an elephant safari to spot tigers and rhinoceros. While I was lucky to spot the latter, tigers remained elusive. It was, however, good fun to spot tiger paws and remain still when our guide thought he could hear a tiger approach.

I stayed at the Smiling Tusker Elephant Camp in a beautiful cottage, which is a great place for families. The camp guides can arrange for a safari on request and they ensure that you have a great experience with them.

Tiger Safari in India: Nagarhole National Park

Nagarhole National Park lies in the Karnataka state of India. The park is located in the Coorg and Mysore district. Nagarhole is named after Naga, which means the snake and Hole, which means the streams in the park.

Nagarhole is one of the tiger reserves in India and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is famous for its predator Bengal tiger. The best time to visit the national park is between April and May (inclusive).

I have visited the national park many times and I have stayed at different resorts, but the best one is the Jungle Lodges Kabini . The lodges are owned by the Government of Karnataka. The property is along the Kabini River and is absolutely beautiful.

The jungle safaris are arranged by the Karnataka forest department that can be booked at the Jungle Lodges. The animal safaris are run every day, in the morning at 6 AM and in the evening at 3 PM.

Tiger Safari in India: Periyar National Park

Periyar National Park is one of the more popular reserves and parks in India. It is well worth a visit if not only in the hopes of seeing a tiger, but for the fact that it offers two types of unique safari.

Periyar is not only one of the last national parks that you can walk into in India (we fortunately only came across some brawling bison during that foray as opposed to any big cats), but it’s also one of the few parks you can explore from the water.

Boating trips on Periyar Lake are one of the most popular activitiess in the park, but can get noisy and crowded – and you’re not likely to see a tiger. For a quieter experience we recommend trying rafting expeditions instead.

There are over 40 tigers in Periyar according to the 2019 tiger census, but they are well hidden in the dense forest, and unfortunately we didn’t spot one during our visit.

For your best chances of seeing them, try and stay in one of the government owned lodges such as Periyar House which is located within Periyar national park. Or, for a high end and highly sustainable experience, we recommend Spice Village by CHG Earth, consistently awarded as one of India’s most sustainable hotels and modelled on a spice plantation village.

Tiger Safari in India: Ranthambore National Park

To see tigers in the wild, the Ranthambore National Park is a perfect place to visit. About 3 ½ hours southeast from Jaipur in Rajasthan, this National Park is one of the biggest parks in Northern India. About 70 tigers live here, as well as leopards and lots of other wild animals which makes it one of the best wildlife safaris in India.

To go on a safari you have to book the game drive in advance and be sure to have your passport or ID with you. Kids are allowed at the park as well to enjoy the wildlife, and there is no age restriction.

The Jungle Vilas Ranthambore is a good option to stay close to the National Park. Besides rooms in the main building they also offer villas and a spacious pool to relax at in between the game drives.

Tiger Safari in India: Sariska National Park

The Sariska National Park / Tiger Reserve, spread over 866 square kilometers, lies 200 kilometers from Delhi in Rajasthan. The park is a dry deciduous forest along with rocky landscapes and is rich in lakes and water bodies.

The low lying forest is lined by Salai, Ber, Khair trees whereas the upper hills have a canopy of Dhok trees. It is a home to various wildlife species like quail, peacock, blur bull, spotted deer, rufous treepie, langurs, wild boars, rhesus monkeys, and tigers.

There are multiple accommodation options in Sariska Tiger Reserve ranging from guest houses, tents, government guest houses to luxurious hotels. We stayed at  Hotel Tiger Den , the government property managed by RTDC (Rajasthan Tourism Development Corporation) which lies just 500 meters from the Sariska Tiger Reserve entry gate.

The Sariska Tiger Reserve is a perfect weekend getaway from New Delhi for wildlife & bird lovers and nature enthusiast. Safari are only allowed with a guide so is safe for both adults & kids.

Tiger Safari in India: Tadoba Andhari

Tadoba Andhari Tiger Reserve in the state of Maharashtra is a fantastic tiger reserve and is considered one of the easiest parks to spot a tiger, however it really is entirely your luck. You fly to Nagpur from any major city in India. Mumbai, the closest major airport to the tiger park, is  approximately a 2 hour drive to the forest.

The jungle is beautiful and home to deer, bison, leopards and several other birds and animals. The tiger is of course what it’s more famous for. Children are allowed in a safari jeep but preferably over 5 years of age.

I stayed at Irai Resort which is a lovely property that has tents that are fully furnished with plumbing and air conditioning as well as comfortable cottages.

Where To See Tigers in Nepal

Although Nepal only had 121 tigers in 2009 , conservation efforts may drive that number to over 200 by 2022. So if you are looking for a tiger safari Nepal may be a good choice for you. Chitwan, a national park in Nepal is a UNESCO world heritage site where you take a tiger safari in Nepal.

Like everywhere else, as shown below by the experience of two different travellers, going on tiger safaris involves a fair bit of luck. One person only saw tiger tracks at Chitwan on their tiger safari, while the second person got very close to a tiger by the riverside.

Tiger Safari in Nepal: Chitwan National Park

If you are looking for tigers in the wild you might be surprised to learn that Nepal actually has a national park in the country that keeps wild tigers in their park. Located in the southern border of the country and next to India, the large natural preserve of Chitwan National Park contains the largest wild populations of rhinos, tigers, sloth bears, buffalo, jaguars and even barking deers located throughout the park.

The bio diverse landscape of lush jungle forests, beautiful rivers, streams and lakes and dry savannah make this a perfect natural environment for wildlife to be maintained and thrive in the park. Along with a dedicated national administration and crew that takes care of the park and watches for poaching, Chitwan is well protected and maintained.

The only way to see the park is through guides and safaris that you need to arrange in advanced through your hotel or a travel agency that can set up the visit for you to the area.

I stayed at an eco retreat called Machan Wildlife Resort that arranged all the tours, meals and a total fantastic experience to the park.

– Noel Morata from Travel Photo Discovery

The mist was just starting to clear as the sun rose over Chitwan National Park’s meandering river.  I fought not to lose my footing as I climbed into the small wooden canoe that would take us deep into Nepal’s most famous jungle, where we hoped to see rhinos, bears and elephants.  Suddenly, seemingly out of no where, there was a flash of colour against the green of the jungle. A large, male tiger stood watching us intently from the bank of the river giving us a once in a lifetime experience that I shall never forget.

The Best Tiger Safaris In India

India’s wildlife journey with our experts.

One of the greatest reasons wildlife and nature lovers are drawn to India is the wildlife safaris that explore the rich range of biodiversity (jungles, rivers, and magnificent wildlife). The main attraction of these safaris is the Royal Bengal Tiger,  an awesome creature unlike any other.

Tigers are notoriously elusive. Masters of disguise and stealth, these majestic animals are hard to spot in the wild.

Our local wildlife experts, therefore, compiled a  list of National Parks and Tiger Reserves that give you the best shot at spotting tigers out in the wild. Our list covers all regions of India.

So, if you are traveling in only one particular region of India (say the Rajasthan in North or Kerala/Karnataka in South India), we have got you covered with a whole host of options. The list has been arranged in order of probability of tiger sighting. We begin with the best tiger-spotting places.

NOTE: Please note that during the Monsoon Months (Mid-June to September/Early October) , most National Parks shut down for maintenance and fear of flash floods. So, plan your wildlife trips to India accordingly.

Summer in India (April-June) is quite intense and the mercury can rise up to 37-40°C. But that is also the best time for tiger safaris because the tigers have to stick close to water holes and reservoirs to stay hydrated. This makes spotting them easier than at other times of the year. So braving the heat is well worth the challenge.

Let our local travel experts help you make a  non-obligatory travel and completely transparent plan  that shows you the route, places to stay, transport modes and gives you an idea of the cost of the tour with a complete breakup.

Customize Your Trip

Top 12 Tiger Safaris In India

With 106 National Parks and over 500 Wildlife Sanctuaries in India, you are really spoiled for choice and figuring out where to go can get quite confusing.

(Which is why) We have narrowed the list down to 12 places where you are almost guaranteed to spot tigers out on the prowl.

 1. Ranthambore National Park (Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan)

2. bandhavgarh national park (madhya pradesh), 3. jim corbett national park (uttarakhand), 4. kanha national park (madhya pradesh), 5. kaziranga national park (assam), 6. bandipur national park (karnataka), 7. nagarhole national park (karnataka), 8. pench tiger reserve (maharashtra), 9. tadoba andhari tiger reserve (maharashtra), 10. periyar national park (kerala), 11. satpura national park (maharashtra), 12. gir national park (gujarat).

Ranthambore

Abode of the Royal Bengal Tiger, the Ranthambore National Park is hands down the best place in all of India to go on a tiger-spotting safari. This wild outback in the Sawai Madhopur region of Rajasthan used to be the private hunting ground of the Maharaja of Jaipur.

Sprawling over 400 sq. km. this north Indian national park is considered to be the most popular in the country, and features in almost all itineraries of trips to Rajasthan. It is named after an ancient fort of the same name that’s located on its premises.

Ranthambore is the perfect second fiddle act to the cultural immersions of Rajasthan (in “Pink City” Jaipur , “Venice in the East” Udaipur , “Golden City” Jaisalmer, “Blue City” Jodhpur and Pushkar ).

Plan A Trip

BANDHAVGARH

The Central Indian State of Madhya Pradesh is one of the primary destinations in the country for wildlife and tiger safaris.

Why? Because, of all the states in India, Madhya Pradesh has the highest density of tigers per square mile on the planet. And, Bandhavgarh is only one of its many Tiger Reserves—albeit the best of the lot. (We will cover the rest later).

The Bandhavgarh National Park is nestled in the Vindhya Hills of the state. The landscape is characterized by a dense deciduous forest cover, steep ridges, meandering hills and vast meadows —making it an ideal habitat for tigers and a wide range of other wild species.

This erstwhile hunting ground of the Maharaja of Rewa gives Ranthambore a run for its money for the title of the best destination for a tiger safari in India. The first white tiger to ever be hunted (hunted by the Maharaja) is now on display on the property.

Best Time to Visit: November to June

Number Of Tigers in The Reserve: 60-70

This pioneering National Park was established in 1936 (the oldest in India) under the British Raj and has been a model for other national parks to emulate on account of its trend-setting wildlife conservation efforts .

In 1956, the Indian Government named the park after the renowned naturalist and conservationist, Jim Corbett (it was previously named after Governor of United Provinces William Malcolm Hailey).

Kanha

Located in the dense Maikal Moutain Range in a topography that can be characterized as a highland, Kanha is a magnificent habitat for Bengal Tiger.

Other exotic creatures like Dhole (Indian Wild Dogs), sloth bears, Barasingha (swamp deer) and leopards also find their home in Kanha.

Aside from tigers, the BARASINGHA (Swamp Deer) is one of crown jewels of Kanha.

Kaziranga

So far we have covered mostly Tiger-centric destinations where the primary attraction is (of course) the Royal Bengal Tiger. In this national Park, however, tigers share their abode with another magnificently exotic animal— the rare one-horned rhinoceros.

Declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the Kaziranga National Park is home to the world’s two-thirds population of one-horned rhinos (their name stands at 2,613 as per the latest count).

Located in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the North-Eastern state of ASSAM , Kaziranga is also home to a large number of tigers and has been declared by UNESCO as “ an Important Bird Area” due to a rich variety of indigenous and migratory birds found here.

Four rivers (including the sacred Brahmaputra ), a large number of smaller water bodies, and a landscape of marshlands, swamps, tropical moist broadleaf forests and elephant grass make for an excellent habitat for a rich variety of mammals, reptiles, and avian creatures.

Nestled in the Brahmagiri mountains , the landscape of Nagarhole features lush green forest cover, cascading waterfalls and ridges.

Aside from providing tigers the perfect habitat to make a home and find prey in, this topography also makes Nagarhole a great destination for river adventures like white-water rafting, boating, and fishing.

tadoba

Having covered national Parks in North and North East India (Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Assam), we now move to Maharashtra, the economic hub of India (home to some of India’s well-known cities like Mumbai, Pune, and Nagpur).

As per the latest count carried out in 2020, the Tadoba Tiger Reserve (located in the Chandrapur district) is home to 88 Bengal Tigers.

Stretching over 577 sq. km. of area, Tadoba gets its name from the deity “Tadoba” worshipped by the tribes of the region. The tribe believes that the deity resides in its awe-inspiring and jaw-droppingly dense foliage.

Aside from tigers, Tadoba is also home to creatures like Indian Gaurs (Bisons), Sambar (stags), Indian Cobra, honey badgers, Dhole (wild dogs), Russell Vipers, and the endangered Indian python.

With a range of creatures like these, the reverence of the tribes for this magnificent makes a lot of sense.

Best Zones in Satpura | Gates in Satpura National Park | Madhai

Satpura National Park is the largest tiger reserve of Central India and is divided into 10 different ranges. The core-Kamti, Bori, Churna, East Pachmarhi, West Pachmarhi, and Matkuli. The buffer is divided into Bagda, Pipariya, Denwa, and Tawa. Out of which Kamti range has the Madhai gate where Denwa Backwater Escape is situated and maximum tourism activities can be done. Madhai Gate is named after the relocated village that used to be nestled inside the core area before.

Just like all the national parks of Central India, Satpura is also divided into core and buffer. Denwa, Sonbhadra, and Nagdwari rivers barricade the core of Madhai naturally and have 3 different zones/routes – Lagadha, Jhinjhini Mehel, and Chutkidev. All these routes originate from Madhai and jeeps can be booked accordingly for the route.

1) Lagadha in Satpura:

best tiger safari in india quora

Lagadha is situated on the foothills of mountains. Sonbhadra flows right next to it. On the bank of the river, there are large boulders that serve as a platform to have breakfast with a view. Whilst you enjoy your hot cuppa and delicious breakfast, you might as well observe crocodiles swimming at a distance, Malabar Whistling Thrush melodiously whistling away or you may never know, a leopard might just come by to enjoy the sun-kissed rocks.

2) Jhin Jhini Mehel:

best tiger safari in india quora

The forest also has a history of it. Hidden deep inside the forest, is an ancient tribal temple. Something that is straight out of Jungle Book. According to locals, this temple was built in the era of king ‘Bahutsingh’. The architecture of this temple is very interesting. These temples are made up of massive rocks that are placed one above another without using any concrete. Which makes it a unique structure. There are some idols of God that gives cultural value to this area.

3) Chutkidev at Satpura:

best tiger safari in india quora

This is the highest you can go to Madhai. From here, when you gaze upon the grandness of Satpura, everything that the light touches are part of the tiger reserve. It’s one of the longest mountain ranges and gets blurred as you try to see near the horizon. From here you can see both the rivers, Denwa and Sonbhadra which are the lifelines for the ecosystem. Sonbhadra practically originates from here.

Denwa Backwater Escape

Denwa Backwater Escape is located overlooking the mesmerizing backwaters of a dam built on Denwa River in Satpura National Park , the area is popularly known as Madhai. It is built on 10 acres of forested land along the river largely using local materials like stone, and baked tiles but the design is contemporary safari style. The rooms are done up in style with unique leather safari furniture, crisp cotton upholstery, linen, and local crafts. The main building and the pool are done up with vintage iron furniture and hand-crafted wooden furniture, the wood for which is sourced from old furniture and sleeper wood.

Churna Trip in Satpura :

best tiger safari in india quora

To go to Churna, you need to combine two permits for morning and evening from Madhai. Lesser vehicle numbers, a drive-through lavish green forest, hot served food cooked on Chulha, a walk along a stream, and a power nap on a swing inside a core area would surely make your trip unforgettable. During the afternoon when the park is closed one can rest at Churna Forest Rest House. One can also plan an overnight trip to Churna for which booking is to be done with the forest department.

Panarpani Gate and Butterfly Park in Satpura:

Panarpani Gate comes under the Pachmarhi biosphere of the Satpura Tiger Reserve . Pachmarhi is one of the popular hill stations of Madhya Pradesh. Here you can take a walk inside a butterfly garden that is home to around 125 species of butterflies throughout the year. This route goes down to Nimgham, a scenic route running down the legendary Forsyth trail.

This gate is between Matkuli and Pachmarhi town. Most of the guests staying in Pachmarhi use this gate for jeep for tiger safari .

Coming on to the buffers of Satpura. The buffers here are as rich as the core area. Supporting an entire plethora of wild animals and differing from the core area, does allow you to explore the forest at night and look for all the night crawlers and flyers.

1) Parsapani buffer:

parsapani

This area is full of unique terrain as it holds rich vegetation in an undulating habitat. These patches are niched in with many ponds, streams, grasslands, riverbanks, forests, etc.

2) Sehra buffer:

sehra in satpura

Something totally different from Parsapani, Sehra is closer to Denwa and is full of lush green meadows where the gentle giants, Gaur, peacefully graze. An old shrine that used to be a regular pilgrim place for the locals. The last couple of seasons shows how exactly just a little bit of protection can do to a forest. These few years were some of the best times to spot a female sloth bear with her two cubs in this area as she was very particular to visit a dam every day at exact same time. Leopards and wild dogs also roam free in this newly regenerating forest.

In both of these buffers are watchtowers overlooking a massive expanse of valleys.

Having tea here with the sunset is an experience in itself. Camping is allowed inside these two buffer areas. In Parsapani we can stay in the Forest Guard’s camp which earlier used to be a school in a village, whereas in Sehra camping is done under the open sky with tents.

The buffers are also the only ways to get lucky and see some of the rarest creatures on the planet like the Satpura Leopard Gecko, Rusty Spotted Cat, Mouse Deer, Indian Crested Porcupine, and many more.

When is the best time to see tigers in india.

Pointing out the best months for tiger safaris in India is tough. Wildlife lovers who wish to get close encounters with the mighty beasts in their natural habitats prefer to come during the drier months from February to June. The soaring temperatures and thescorching heat depletes the water of pools and lakes. The grass and trees dry due to shriveling, making the landscape look parched and desert-like. Thirst drives these tigers out of their homes to roam in search of water and rest in the proximity of the remaining pools. Hence, the chances of spotting tigers become maximum. And you also get plenty of opportunities to photograph wildlife so near at hand.

However, the hot climate makes it equally uncomfortable to travel. So for a breezy atmosphere, some travelers prefer coming after the monsoon months of August and September. The showers of the rainy season restore the green in the jungle. The grasslands become taller, making it hard to spot to find tigers, and at the same time, increasing the adventure. Also, the cool weather makes traveling a lot easier.

The Best Tiger Safari in India is in Bandhavgarh, Ranthambore, Tadoba, Kanha, Corbett, Pench National Parks etc.

India is a land blessed with a variety of wildlife and birds. Among its most iconic animals is the Bengal Tiger (Panthera Tigris Tigris). It is the national animal of India. The Tiger is both beauty and power in one body. India has the largest population of Bengal Tigers in the world. About 3682 according to the recent census. This is a good improvement and shows the conservation efforts of many. Rapid development, loss of habitat, and poaching over the years have threatened their nos and existence itself. Conservation is very important not only for tiger’s survival but also for other wildlife and birds that live in the forests of India.

India’s tiger reserves are biodiversity hotspots where diverse ecosystems flourish. These habitats are home to not only Bengal tigers but also a rich variety of wildlife, including deer, leopard, and vibrant birdlife. Marshlands and water bodies have aquatic species. Preserving these ecosystems is important, as they represent the harmonious co-existence of species.

Project Tiger was started to protect the tigers and it has been so far successful. When you protect the tiger you also protect many other species of animals, birds, insects, reptiles, and even rivers & forests themselves. Under Project Tiger, a lot of wildlife areas were declared protected, and strict laws were in place. Many of these are today the most popular tiger parks in India.

A tiger safari in India is not just about watching these big cats in their natural environment, but also an opportunity to enjoy the rich biodiversity of a forest. Furthermore, tiger safaris and tours contribute significantly to conservation efforts. The revenue generated from tourism is used for the protection of the forest and also to help the local community.

Tourism through tiger safaris and tours is a major conservation tool. Tourism gives livelihood to many local communities in the Forest dept, as Safari drivers, guides, in the various resorts, etc. The locals who work directly or indirectly in the forest are a major force in protecting and changing the minds of other people living around the forest.

The following sections will explore the Best tiger safaris in India, the top tiger reserves in India, the best times to visit, and wildlife that shares in these forests with the tiger.

India is home to primarily the Royal Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), also known as the Indian Tiger. This majestic big cat is characterised by its distinctive orange coat with bold black stripes. Renowned for its strength and grace, the Bengal tiger depicts an iconic symbol of India’s rich wildlife heritage.

Tigers are solitary animals and have large territories.

They use roars, grunts, and chuffing sounds to communicate.

Males have larger territories than females. There may be at least 4-5 female territories overlapping a male territory. A female can have a 15-20km territory while a male can have 30-50 km of territory.

Tigers are active at night and during twilight. They have great night vision.

They hunt by stalking and have to get close before they leap in full force and speed to kill their prey. Herbivores like deer and wild boar are their primary targets. In some forests where deer are less, they hunt Gaur (Indian bison), elephant calves, and even young rhinos.

Tigers love water unlike other big cats and are expert swimmers. They love to sit in waterholes in the summer to cool themselves.

They often drag the kill to a remote area to avoid any disturbance from other animals.

Males and Females come together for mating. Mating encounters between males and females can last for 3-4 days and they mate every few hours.

After a three-month gestation period, 2 to 4 cubs are born. Mother tigers spend a lot of time caring for and gradually teaching cubs survival skills.

Tiger cubs usually stay with their mothers for about 2-3 years.

Cubs gradually learned to hunt and become independent before they established their territories. Males usually have to move away from their mothers’ territory to form their territory. Females make their territory close to their mothers or many times just take over their mothers’ territory.

Although they are solitary Male Tigers have been seen to babysit their young cubs and sometimes raise their cubs. Male Tigers join us for a family meal now and then.

Knowing these behaviors provides an understanding of tigers and how to protect them in the future.

For most tiger parks in India, the best time for a tiger safari is summer. The forest waterholes shrink and foliage is less. The animals including tigers visit the remaining waterholes. Tracking tigers is easier.

Mar – June is the summer season. For frequent sightings of tigers, this is the season.

Once you have visited in summer you can also visit in winter as the weather is very cool and the forest is green and the early mornings misty. Finding Tigers is difficult but when you find one it’s worth the effort.

On Safari wear loose and comfortable clothes. Full-sleeve shirts and full pants are ideal especially in the Summer sun. They also help protect from insect/mosquitoes.

Earth colors like greys, olive, beiges, browsn and forest greens are prefered.

Clothes should according to the season. In Summers they can be light cotton or quick wicking clothes. In Winter you will need to pack a few warm clothes and head wear like a warm beanie or felt hat.

A windproof jacket helps in the early morning chill on a safari drive. Sunscreen for summer.

Walking on safari is quiet rare and mostly not allowed. So you can wear any type of shoes that are comfortable. Flip-flops or sandals are also fine in summers. Choose based on your activity and season.

If the safari involves hiking or trekking in forest areas then you should pack hiking/tekking boots based on the terrain.

Read Details about Packing for Wildlife Photography in India

When you select a safari choose People or Company that is passionate about wildlife and has a commitment to sustainable and ethical practices. Also choose the locals as much as possible.

The Best Tiger Safari is one that is safe for people and animals. Always maintain a safe and respectful distance from the animals. Never try to feed, touch, or provoke wild animals or even birds. Remember, these are wild animals, and their behavior can be unpredictable. Listen to and follow the instructions of your guides and naturalists at all times.

Carry out all litter and waste from the safari area. Avoid littering, and if you see any litter, pick it up and dispose of it properly. Leave the habitat as you found it, so future generations can enjoy the same experience.

Keep noise levels to a minimum. This means refraining from playing loud music, shouting, or making sudden movements that could startle the animals. The objective is to allow the animals to behave naturally and without undue stress.

Be carefull when you see a tiger. One of the most common sights is people dropping their camera or lens when the tiger is out and moving. There have also been incidents of people falling from vehicles. Excitement is natural when you see a tiger but keep your things and self in balance. Dont stand on the seat when your vehicle is moving.

Photographers have a responsible role to play. The above applies to them as well. We all love to take a closeup from the front, however the animal’s right to free movement is most important. Let it decide where and how it wants to move. Always make sure your vehicle is not blocking its way. A comfortable animal will give you more time and more natural poses. Great photographs are taken by having patience and spending more time with the animals. You won’t get all the greatest photographs in a day. Sometime its frustating to follow all the rules however keep in mind they exist for a reason. There are rules which make no sense, but that is part of a photographers life. You adapt and make the best in any situation.

Sometimes due to many irresponsible tourists and even photographers the rules of the park become strict. If this continues new wildlifers and photographers will never get a chance to enjoy a great tiger safari.

There are 2 safaris, one in the Morning and one in Afternoon.  Safaris are in 20 percent of the core national park. Besides the core, the buffer areas have been opened for wildlife safaris in many parks.

Tiger Parks allow limited vehicles and have limited permits. Most Tiger Reserves offer safaris in 4×4 vehicles called Gypsy and Canter a 20 seater minibus. Elephant Safari has been stopped for many years now in many parks. There are a few like Corbett where you can still do a small 1 hrs Elephant Safari.

Apart from normal two safaris, for photographers and videographers, some parks like Bandhavgarh, Kanha, Tadoba, etc. offer a Full Day Permits.  Ranthambore recently stopped its Full and Half day permits.

Most popular national parks have many options to stay, maybe a little more than needed. From Budget to Luxury,

A few minutes on Google and TripAdvisor should help in finding the best in your budget. All accomodations in national parks are mostly outside and around the parks.

Jim Corbett is one park where you can stay inside the core area of the national park. The accommodation is simple and have limited facilities however, they are inside a prestine area of the forest.

Below is a list of the best Tiger Safaris in India. Whether you are a nature lover or a photographer these will satisfy most. It is best to do 2 parks for better variety and sightings.

Best Tiger Safari Tours in India

Just Tigers name was coined by none else but Jim Corbett. He signified the importance of shooting Tigers by a camera than a rifle. He said, taking a good photograph of a Tiger gives pleasure not only to the person who clicked it but even to others with whom they share. It took Corbett more than 200 sightings before he got a good picture of a Tiger. It is not so tough today when you go through our ‘Just Tigers’ program which covers India’s three premium Tiger reserves, namely, Pench, Kanha, and Bandhavgarh. Earlier this year, all our guests had some real great Tiger sightings while on this tour.

If Tiger is your focus while on a safari in India, then this tour accomplishes it comprehensively. Not one, not two but three of our premium Tiger reserves to effectuate your dream of seeing Tigers in the wilds of India. Pench, Kanha and Bandhavgarh national parks are located in central India. Away from the big and busy metros, in the rural and tribal country, the effort taken to get here is handsomely rewarded by the Tiger sightings in these parks.

It is safe to say that these parks were amongst the first ones to be discovered by the British Foresters in the central provinces. The news from these foresters reached a writer who heard some wonderful tales and wrote the famous ‘The Jungle Book’ which became the first work to have been credited with a Nobel Prize in the field of literature.

The Taj Mahal – Rudyard Kipling described Taj Mahal as “embodiment of everything pure”. Every year, tourists numbering more than twice the population of Agra, pass through its gates, to catch a once in a lifetime glimpse of one of the seven wonders of the world. Thus, a day’s visit is strongly recommended to see this 500-year old monument.

Jaipur – The sagas of valor, self-esteem before life, and lavish palaces – three things that your mind envisions when you think of Rajasthan. No quest in this sandy state is complete without the color pink. The capital city, Jaipur, steeped in tradition and glorious architecture of pink lattice windows, magnificent and time-worn forts with bazaars lit like the spectrum of light; it won’t be a shocker if you to fall in love with it.

Wildlife – To get a taste of Indian Wildlife , the right exposure to the right parks with the right people, is crucial. We thus suggest Corbett, Ranthambore National Park, Kanha Tiger Reserve, and Bandhavgarh National Park as a part of this itinerary. You not only get to see wildlife in all its glory but also the landscape that this wildlife oh so beautifully rests on. And even though Tigers are protagonists in this wonderful jungle book, other species like Leopards, Elephants, Sloth Bears, Indian Gaur, and hundreds of colorful birds, share the limelight equally with this star.
