I managed to swing the first shot well, and the golf ball flew beautifully to the middle of the field. We and tstoto walked together towards the place where the last ball landed. I talked to another independent fitter who said he had the same comments back on the X22. Callaway must have tweeked the numbers, angles etc. or ?? I'll avoid Callaway from now on

Bought my set of graphite shaft X-22's from Golf Town. Saved $250 from the regular price and decided it was time to treat myself to a brand name set of irons, likely the last set I'll need to buy. I like them a lot. It is true, you will see a 10+ yard gain on your well-struck shots. I had a 150 yd. shot to the front of a green (normally a 7 iron) and I cleared the flag-stick, leaving a ball mark well beyond. I figured I hit that shot 165 yds! Very forgiving too and with the graphite shafts, reasonably light clubs. The ball flight can really sky if you want it to, yet despite being 'game improvement' clubs, they aren't the clunkiest looking option on the market. I am still learning to get the most out of these clubs, but they definitely inspire confidence. The quality is excellent. Highly recommended for anyone who loves to play golf every year. A good investment in more ways than one.

Before the X-22's, my golf bag was filled with a mix of junk clubs. None of a recognized brand name, that's for sure! LOL

To improve on the highly successful X-20 Tour Irons, Callaway Golf engineers added new features that allow the X-22 Tour Irons to play even better and feel even softer. Precision Notch Weighting and a new sleeker hosel combine to raise the moment of inertia (MOI) for better stability and allow the center of gravity (CG) to be moved lower and more in line with the center of the face. This generates ideal trajectories and significantly enhances the level of feel. The head shape has been refined with the thinnest possible topline while still using a 360-Degree Undercut Channel, and the optimized sole width progression provides better turf interaction.

• Precision Notch Weighting : Precisely positions more weight to the perimeter of the iron to create a higher MOI for greater forgiveness and stability while maintaining the CG position that produces ideal trajectories and feel.
• Tour-Proven Head Shape : Features the thinnest topline possible while still incorporating a 360-Degree Undercut Channel. The blade length is shorter and the CG has been moved lower and in line with the center of the face to provide unparalleled performance with enhanced feel.
• Redesigned Hosel : The sleeker design significantly improves feel and allows the hosel to be more easily adjusted to fit a golfer's custom specifications.

Are Callaway X-22 Irons Still Good? Are They Forgiving for High Handicappers?

Are callaway x-22 irons still good are they forgiving for high handicappers  .

“The Callaway X-22 irons build on the success of previous X and Steelhead iron models.”  

Callaway once proclaimed their X-22 irons the best they’ve ever made. While the Callaway X-22 irons bear a lot of the same features as the X-18 irons, Callaway states that they have made improvements on almost all of them.   

For instance, the  improved perimeter weighting of the Callaway X-22 irons is said to provide 10% higher MOI than the previous X-18 model. But what does any of that mean for high handicappers?  

A lot of us have been fans of the Steelhead and “X” irons so we were really excited to go out and test the Callaway X-22 irons.

We tested them specifically to see how they perform for high handicappers. Take a look at our findings.  

Are Callaway X-22 Irons Still Good?  

“In a word, yes. The Callaway X-22 irons look great behind the ball and all of the individual components have been designed to work synergistically with one another.”  

You can feel the love and care that went into the design of these irons. When we first started testing these irons, we were convinced that they were still high quality based on the feel and looks alone.     

They have the look of a premium set of irons and are packed with forgiveness features. Now it should be noted that most of the key technology that went into these irons is concerned with moving more weight to the perimeter of the club head.   

But aside from that, the Callaway X-22’s are still good simply because they feel good. We would definitely categorize them as game-improvement irons; but they don’t look or feel like game-improvement irons.     

They have more of a traditional player’s iron profile but they still provide a lot of forgiveness.   

Are the Callaway X-22’s Forgiving for High Handicappers?  

“The notch weighting design really helps increase head stability when you miss the hitting zone.”  

You can actually see these weights in the back of the club head. They jut out from the corners of the heel and toe and extend a bit into the cavity. You can feel the support they provide when you miss the center of the club head.    

Our testers were getting exceptionally straight shots when they intentionally mis-hit. This also resulted in very tight shot dispersion throughout the set. Side spin was almost completely eliminated in these irons too.     

The Callaway X-22’s feature variable face technology as well. This is the feature we think is to thank for the fast ball speeds.

Even shots we made near the heel of the club head were producing ball speeds comparable to on-center strikes.     

If you have been struggling with your impact positioning, the Callaway X-22’s will definitely help you.

While they don’t have an oversized footprint and the toplines and soles are relatively narrow, they provide forgiveness in other effective ways.  

Callaway X-22’s Vs Callaway Rogue ST Max Irons  

“The Rogue ST Max irons actually have a shape reminiscent of the Callaway X-22 irons.”    

However, the Rogue ST Max irons have a larger footprint overall. After testing these iron sets side by side, we could tell that the ST Max irons place a high emphasis on improving ball speed.    

They feature a high-grade steel design that gives them a solid feel. And like the Callaway X-22 irons, the ST Max irons provide very high MOI.

The ST Max irons launch higher than the Callaway X-22 irons too. Performance was almost identical between these two sets.   

However, the ST Max irons launch higher and have a heavier feel to them. Meanwhile, the Callaway X-22’s irons produced more stable flight and were more forgiving on off-center strikes.  

Callaway X-22 First Impressions  

“We were really impressed with the looks and shaping of these irons.”    

They are not too bulky but they’re not too small either. While we could have done without the electric green color accenting in the cavity, that doesn’t have anything to do with how they perform.

Callaway X-22 Key Technology

Modified Tru-Bore Design: This new Tru-Bore design features the same “shaft through club head build” but there is a new polycarbonate shaft tip plug that helps dampen unwanted vibration.

Callaway 2009 line-up revealed

Three new sets of irons from Callaway designed to appeal to a wide range of golfers. The 2009 X-Forged irons have been refined from the original design with the help of Callaway Tour players. The club now has more bounce and thinner sole and maintains the narrow sole and short blade length.

The X-22 irons have a redesigned weighting system which redistributes weight and gives the club 10% higher Moment of Innertia for added forgiveness. The new design also has a slightly thinner top edge and sole for improved aesthetics and a larger sweet spot. The X-22 Tour irons use the same Notch Weighting system to raise the MOI. A sleeker hosel has been added which helps to lower the centre of gravity and move it nearer to the middle of the face. The head shape has also been refined with a thinner top edge.

What we say...

We love Callaway irons: cool, classy and better-performing than Steven Gerrard in a Liverpool shirt, they tick all the boxes. And the latest bats for 2009 look the business too.

And for those of you looking for a forgiving club, check out the Callaway X-22 irons . These beauties boast an MOI that is 10% higher than the X-20, which means even yuor bad shots have a chance of finding the target. Nice.

There is also a Tour range in the X-22 irons which benefits from great feel and a super-thin topline.

And for the wannabe ‘players’ amongst you, the new X-Forged irons sound ideal. Legend Roger Cleveland has been involved in the reshaping of the irons, with the CG in the long irons positioned a little lower than before, helping to send the ball on a higher flight. But with the shorter sticks, the CG has been raised to help promote the more penetrating trajectory preferred by better players.

2009 Review

Our test team agreed there is a lot going on in this clubhead, with a lot of potentially distracting lines on the face. That said, our testers got on pretty well with the Callaway X-22 irons , especially Richard expected more forgiveness from the 6-iron.

2010 Review:

The X-22 didn’t quite deliver the goods on this occasion, with the boys a little wild in   rms of dispersion ratings. Craig noted how well it flew when you caught it out of   

the middle, and Alex thought the  graphics stood out well. But Colin  wasn’t sure bout the strange hosel and thought the head was a little too chunky.

The ideal centre of gravity position has been preserved, generating optimal ball-flight trajectories. Calalway have also incorporated the Modified Tru-Bore design, dampening vibration for enhanced feel.

The tour-inspired head shape has a slightly thinner topline and sole with a large sweet spot for improved aesthetics and forgiveness to boost your confidence. Essentially, Callaway's engineers took elements designed for Tour players and incorporated them into highly forgiving irons with a higher MOI so they can be played by a wide range of golfers.
