Review: Green Day's Show in Cincinnati was an Exciting Journey into the Past

I have been a professional concert photographer for 10 years, and this concert is in my top five most exciting concerts i've photographed..

Green Day performing at Great American Ball Park on Aug. 22

On the evening of Aug. 22, I was 15 again. Green Day performed for tens of thousands of excited fans at Great American Ball Park, and I was there to witness it. Every song on “The Saviors Tour” took me back to my high school days blasting Green Day’s Dookie album from my portable CD player.

The concert featured 36 songs taken from two amazing albums — Dookie and American Idiot . What made this concert unique is both albums were played in their entirety. I have been an audience member and/or a photographer at dozens of shows, none of which had this format.

I have been a professional concert photographer for 10 years, and this concert was in my top five most exciting concerts I've photographed. The industry standard is to photograph the first three songs, but for Green Day, we were given two songs. While this is disappointing, I always remember there are 40,000 people standing behind me that would love to have even a single song.

We made our way to the pit to photograph the band. “Bohemian Rhapsody” by Queen, which had the entire crowd singing along, played before the show. The band came out a few minutes later and opened with “The American Dream Is Killing Me.”  This medium-speed song was a great warm-up for the rest of the night.

The band moved through the remaining Dookie songs at a blistering pace. I kept expecting the usual concert move of talking to the crowd as a break from performing, but it never came. The intensity with which they performed, I imagine, is the same as 30 years ago. Their performance was unbelievable. I was most excited about hearing “Basket Case” in person. The best way I can describe this particular song is epic. It was the song of my freshman year being performed just for me and as loud as can be.

While I was familiar with “American Idiot” and “Boulevard of Broken Dreams,” I was not as much with the remaining American Idiot songs. One of the best things about this show was that not knowing the songs didn’t matter. The music made me feel something I hadn’t at other artists’ shows.  I “felt” the music and felt what the hardcore fans must have been feeling. It was an incredible Cincinnati concert that I will always remember.

Green Day made the switch from one album to the next without much fanfare. During Dookie , the stage had a multi-story set piece mimicking their iconic 1994 album cover. Everyone I knew in 1994 owned this album. As “American Idiot,” the title track of the 2004 album began, a large fist and heart-shaped grenade appeared. Yet again, this mimicked the album artwork. There was almost no discernable musical break between albums, which is indicative of Green Day’s consistent musical style.

Although I didn’t visit every section of the crowd, I noticed most people were in the 35- to 55-year-old demographic. Of course, there were preteens and boomers singing every word to every song. I did notice, as well, that each person I saw seemed to know the entire setlist. Normally at a concert, there are people that I call “people who just want to see a concert tonight.” I couldn’t find anyone who wasn’t a huge Green Day fan, and that was exciting.

Billie Joe Armstrong, Tré Cool, Mike Dirnt, Jason White and Jason Freese are the current members of Green Day. I can’t understate the tightness of their instrumentation. The timing between drums, bass and guitars made the music so much punchier than I had anticipated. This, combined with the excellent sound mixing by the sound engineers made this concert a truly enjoyable audio experience.

Concerts like this at Great American Ball Park are always a great experience.  The stages are usually set up in left-center field and rise well above the batter’s eye in center field. Green Day’s stage was approximately 6 feet tall and had what was probably a 20-foot-thrust stage into the audience. Thrusts are exciting because the performers can safely come out into the crowd. Armstrong used this to really fire up the crowd throughout the show.

Green Day’s performance at Great American Ball Park was supported by The Linda Lindas, Rancid and Smashing Pumpkins. There are an additional 25 tour stops still to come on “The Saviors Tour,” with the next few being in North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee.

Green Day: Here’s the setlist from the first night of The Saviors Tour

Dookie in full… American Idiot with a massive heart grenade… a whopping 34-song setlist… yep, Green Day’s epic Saviors Tour is here!

Green Day: Here’s the setlist from the first night of The Saviors Tour

Last night (May 30), Green Day kicked off The Saviors Tour in Spain with a monumental setlist.

As previously promised , the punk rock legends played 1994’s Dookie and 2004’s American Idiot in their entirety during an incredible 34-song performance, as well as a few bangers from throughout the rest of their career – and a couple of newbies from this year’s excellent Saviors album.

The band actually opened with Saviors’ lead single The American Dream Is Killing Me, before wasting no time in going straight into a 30-year celebration of Dookie . After that, fans at the Auditorio Monte do Gozo in Santiago de Compostela were treated to a triple-whammy of Know Your Enemy, Dilemma and Brain Stew, before Green Day tore straight into the American Idiot 20th birthday segment of the night. And the production matched up superbly, with an inflatable version of the album’s heart grenade cover looming large behind them.

After that, Green Day finished up with a one-two of classic sing-along Minority, and customary set-closer Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life). We repeat: that’s thirty-four Green Day songs in one night!

My first Green Day experiences date back to high school, I was 15-16 and it was like ‘93-‘94 before Dookie even came to be. I would see this punk band from the Bay Area perform in some local pizza place in Bakersfield, California called Jerry’s Pizza. From then on I was in love. Like IN LOVE! I loved the bands music! Their sound was something that just got me and to this day Who Wrote Holden Caulfield? is my most favorite Green Day song still. I take a lot of pride in saying I was part of the small percentage of people who loved their music before the entire world knew who they were. They are badass, Hands down! AND I’m thankful BJ had a sweet wife and family to help him when he needed it most and that he is still breathing and that he is here to give us more music with his fellow brothers of the band.

This was my first concert in the Pit, and it was the best night of my life. I got really hyped when I saw how close I was to the stage, and I met some pretty cool people there. When Green Day came out, I actually started crying. I was standing only a couple feet away from the band at points, and I know it was a night I'm never going to forget. I think what made Green Day different that most concerts was how they called so many people on stage and gave away so much stuff. Some people got to go on stage and sing lyrics, or play guitar, and actually got to meet the band members and I honestly thought it was so amazing because they made someone else have the best night of their life. This concert was hands down 10/10, in fact, it broke the scale.

It's been 9 years since Green Day made an appearance in Northern Ireland.

Boy did they make up for it

Rancid, Green Day's tour buddies. Started the show off with high adrenaline. So much so that a mosh pit itself began to form at the front of the stage. I was slap bang in the middle of it.

This high adrenaline show meant that when Green Day started the crowd was already pumped and ready. And they delivered on the he action packed, high octane poreformance everyone wanted. I would easily call this the best night of my life without question. It was a phemomonal performance from both Green Day and Rancid and I wold seriously recommended that,if they're coming to somewhere near you. You get tickets ASAP.

Green Day Forced to Pause Detroit Concert Due to Unauthorized Drone

By Emily Zemler

Green Day temporarily halted their concert at Detroit’s Comerica Park on Wednesday night due to a “potential safety issue.” During their rendition of “Longview,” the rock band ran off the stage without warning.

Billboard confirmed that an “unauthorized drone” had been spotted hovering within sight of the stage by security, who pulled the band offstage. No explanation was given to the crowd, who continued singing in the band’s absence, although a message soon appeared on the stage’s video screens that read: “Show Pause. Please standby for details.”

The band — Billie Joe Armstrong , Mike Dirnt , and Tre Cool — returned 10 minutes later to resume the song. Armstrong didn’t address why the band left, instead saying, “How you doing? We’re gonna pick up where we left off.”

Following the show, Green Day took to social media to explain the situation, writing, “Detroit! Sorry for the delay in the show tonight, stadium security had us clear the stage while they dealt with a potential safety issue. DPD quickly resolved the situation, and we were able to continue. Thanks for understanding.”

Green Day live in Washington, DC review: North American Saviors tour kicks off

T wo hours into their set on Monday night – and five hours after the first opening act had taken the stage - Green Day launched into a ferocious version of “Letterbomb” from their epochal American Idiot album. In the middle of the song, ageless frontman Billie Joe Armstrong urged the crowd, as he had done all night, to leap to their feet, throw their arms in the air, and join in the song. “This isn’t a party,” Armstrong shouted. “It’s a CELEBRATION!”

He needn’t have bothered with the instructions. The sell-out crowd in Washington, DC’s Nationals Park had been on their feet, dancing and singing along from the moment the California punk (don’t call them pop punk) legends hit the stage.

This was the first night of the North American leg of the Saviors Tour, in support of the band’s 14th album . In a way, fans in Washington were treated to a perfect storm. After playing seventeen shows all over Europe in June, Green Day has had a month off to rest up for the nationwide trek across North America that will take them from DC to San Diego over the next two months.

Green Day kicks off North American tour in can't-miss show

Armstrong has rarely sounded better. Bandmates Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool seemed indefatigable. And yet, with those European dates under their belt, there was none of the sloppiness that sometimes afflicts shows at the beginning of a long tour.

The band played five songs from the Saviors album. After a recorded intro that featured “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “Blitzkrieg Bop,” (with a bunny in a Nationals jersey running amok and doing the Worm on stage), and an instrumental medley that ended with the “Imperial March” from Star Wars , Armstrong and company launched into “The American Dream is Killing Me,” the lead track from Saviors .

In the middle of the show, they would play a trio of new songs – “Look Ma, No Brains!,” “One Eyed Bastard,” and “Dilemma,” – and then play “Bobby Sox” at the end of the show. Just before that, Armstrong insisted he needed help from a fan in singing “Know Your Enemy” from 21st Century Breakdown .  A young man from the audience by the name of Johnson eagerly climbed on stage and took the mic, offering a letter-perfect verse, complete with a well-timed leap from a stage platform.

Armstrong made Johnson promise he knew the words to the song before inviting him onstage. He needn’t have bothered. It seemed as if almost everyone in the crowd knew every word to every song, even the newer ones.

And then there were the old songs. Green Day is calling this the Saviors Tour, but this is as much of a celebration of thirty years at the forefront of American punk music as you will ever find. And to that end, they played not just one – but two iconic albums in their entirety. After “The American Dream is Killing Me,” Armstrong reminded the crowd that this is the 30th anniversary of Dookie , the trio’s third album that launched them into the stratosphere back in 1994 .

“Burnout” featured the first of many Tre Cool machine gun drum solos. Armstrong had the audience sing the “Longview” line “When masturbation’s lost its fun, you’re f*****g lazy.” They happily obliged. A raucous “Welcome to Paradise,” came next, followed by fan favorite “Basket Case,” which may have featured the most enthusiastic crowd singing of the night. Armstrong brought out his first guitar to play “F.O.D.” before finishing off Dookie with “All By Myself.”

After a brief interlude that featured other older favorites “Minority” and “Brain Stew,” they began playing “American Idiot,” the song. They had already been at it for close to an hour and half. With little fanfare, they proceeded to play the entire American Idiot album, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2024.

Though clearly a political album, Armstrong kept the political speech to a bare minimum, allowing his songs to work their magic. There may have been a random mask of one particular political candidate showing up during the “I Don’t Care” section of “Jesus of Suburbia,” and a call to support democracy and oppose fascism during “Holiday,” but that was as overt political speech went on Monday.

Armstrong broke out an acoustic guitar for “Give Me Novacaine," and closed the evening with a lovely solo acoustic version of “Good Riddance.” After singing the song by himself, he was joined for the final lines by Dirnt and Cool, who wrapped their arms around each other as the drummer strummed the final chords on Armstrong guitar. It was a sweet, triumphant way to end.

Green Day is being supported on the North American leg of the tour by three bands. Up and coming California rockers, the Linda Lindas, sprinted onto the stage and blistered through a seven-song, 20-minute set, ending with Eloise Wong’s shrieking, growling “Racist Sexist Boy.” Later, Billy Corgan led The Smashing Pumpkins through a tight 11-song set that featured many of their hits like “Bullet With Butterfly Wings” and “1979.”

The only thing that marred the celebratory evening was the weather, which cut short Rancid’s set after just two songs. The small taste – “Maxwell Murder” from 1995’s …and Out Come the Wolves and the title track from last year’s Tomorrow Never Comes – suggest that it will be well worth arriving early to hear the Linda Lindas and Rancid open the rest of the shows over the next two months.

Just make sure you know the words to Know Your Enemy . You may be asked to sing.

Green Day’s ‘Saviors Tour’ Is Heading to Australia In 2025

Green Day is heading down under next year for a multi-date stadium tour.

The Rock Hall-inducted rock trio’s The Saviors Tour will swing into Melbourne’s Marvel Stadium on March 1, followed by Engie Stadium in Sydney on March 3, and wrap March 5 at CBUS Super Stadium, on the Gold Coast.

Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool will play in full Dookie , which this year marks its 30th anniversary, and American Idiot , celebrating its 20th year. The set list will include cuts from Saviors , their 14th and latest album, and hits from across their career.

West Coast rockers AFI is the support, marking their first dates in Australia since 2017.

“We’ve never been more excited to unleash new music than with Saviors , a record that’s meant to be rocked live, together,” reads a statement from Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tré Cool. “And we cannot wait to return to Australia, it’s been way too long. So let’s thrash.”

Live Nation and Triple M are presenting the Australian leg of Green Day’s world tour.

Green Day is always welcome in Australia. Earlier this year, Saviors arrived at No. 2 on the ARIA Chart, for the rockers’ 12th top 10 album here. Three of those LPs led the national chart: Dookie (in 1994), American Idiot (2004) and Father Of All Motherf—ers (2020).

The California band was last booked to play Australia and New Zealand in 2020 for the four-date Hella Mega Tour , also featuring Fall Out Boy and Weezer. That run, however, was cancelled due to the pandemic. The Saviors Tour will be their first visit to these parts since 2017, in support of Revolution Radio.

Green Day’s Saviors Tour made headlines last week when their performance at Comerica Park in Detroit was paused when a unauthorized drone was reportedly spotted hovering within sight of the stage. The bandmates were pulled from the stage, mid-song, returning 10 minutes later.

  1. Tour next year or just more festivals? : r/greenday

I think after all the Hella Mega touring, a full-on tour next year is unlikely. The only thing that might change that is a new album dropping, but frankly, I don't really see that happening until the second half of the year, in which case the tour supporting the album would likely be in early 2024.

In tour with two other bands, there was no chance they'd play new material unless it was a smash hit. Even in previous tours, they'd only pull out a couple new songs and mostly stick to the classics people love. They're going to be doing HellaMega through 2022 so I imagine their next solo tour will be with a new album, not FOAMF.
