You have a lot to choose from if you want to travel by public transport between Adelaide Airport and the city. Public transportation in Adelaide is carried out by Adelaide Metro. Approximately every 15 minutes you can take bus J1 (in the direction of Elizabeth Interchange) or bus J2 (in the direction of Greenwith) to the city centre and vice versa. Other options you have are bus services J1A, J1G, J1T and J2G. Grenfell Street bus stop in the city centre can be reached in about 25 minutes. All buses depart from bus stop 10 at Adelaide Airport, it’s on your left when you leave the terminal.

Bus tickets If you want to travel by bus to Adelaide, you need to buy a MetroTicket or a metroCARD. A MetroTicket is a single ticket which costs 5.90 AUD in peak hours and 4.00 AUD in off-peak hours. The metroCARD is a rechargeable ticket which costs 5.00 AUD and needs to be charged with at least 5.00 AUD. The advantage of the MetroCARD is that you will receive a discount on every trip. It means, you pay a price of 4.05 AUD for a single journey, at off-peak hours the price is 2.25 AUD for a single journey. It is also possible to buy a Daytrip MetroTicket for one day of unlimited travel, the price is 11.20 AUD. Tickets are available from the ticket vending machine at the bus stop. ADELAIDE METRO BUS

Running every 30 minutes, Monday to Friday, Adelaide Metro ’s JetExpress bus service runs between Pulteney Street in Hindmarsh Square and the airport, making just 10 stops in all. The whole trip takes about 25 minutes (around 10 minutes quicker than the all-stop services on this route), and it’s a double-decker, so there’s plenty for space for bulky luggage.

MetroMATE , the excellent Adelaide public transport app, gives up-to-date arrival and departure times. The airport bus stop — for both pick up and drop off — is just past the taxi rank, on the left hand side of the concourse as you leave the terminal.

Uber in Adelaide works exactly like it does elsewhere: there are plenty of drivers, and it’s easy to get rides within the CBD and main metro areas. For departures, the driver will stop in the regular drop-off zone, but for arriving visitors, there’s a knack to getting to the pick-up area: when you exit the terminal, walk across the concourse, cross at the pedestrian lights, skirt past the first aisle of car-hire car parking, then take a hard left to the rideshare zone.

Book your ride as you collect your luggage — by the time you’ve done the 3-minute walk to the pick-up area, your car will be en-route or maybe even waiting for you.

As in most cities, taxis are still a stress-free way to get to and from Adelaide airport. Companies include Yellow Cabs , Independent and Suburban . For pick-ups, the rank is to the left of the pedestrian concourse as you walk out of the terminal. Concierges are on hand to make sure the line flows smoothly and quickly – it’s rare to wait more than a few minutes — and if you need wheelchair access, a maxi-taxi, or baby capsule, they can arrange it. Prices are usually $15 - $25 to get into the CBD. There’s a $3 levy for taxis leaving the airport.

SHUTTLE BUS

A good option for solo travellers is the Airport City Shuttle . The CBD-focussed door-to-door service operates seven days a week during business hours, and cost just $10 each way. If you’re departing Adelaide, give them a call a day in advance to book. For arriving visitors, bookings aren’t required: just check in with the Airport City Shuttle booth near the baggage claim area after you land. Group discounts are available but generally speaking rates are per person, so families and bigger groups may still find a taxi or rideshare fee works out cheaper.

Airports are often big, confusing places and you arrive tired and just want to get to your accommodation. But how do you get there? If you haven’t planned it, it can leave you standing in the middle of the airport with all your luggage wondering what to do next.

Where is Adelaide Airport

We are lucky in Adelaide, the airport is not outside the city limits with an hour or more commute to the city centre which is common in so many cities around the world.

Instead, it only takes about 10-15 minutes to get from Adelaide Airport to the city centre by car. This central location makes it a much easier journey into the city to start your South Australian holiday.

So how far is Adelaide airport to city centre? It’s about 6km from Victoria Square or 6.5km from North Terrace. It is 7.5km from Glenelg.

How to Get from Adelaide Airport to the City

What would be fantastic would be if there was a cheap, direct train or light rail option to get into the city centre, but unfortunately, that is not the case at the moment.

There are always discussions about this, and hopefully, sometime in the future, this will be the case. Until then, here are all the options for getting from Adelaide Airport to Adelaide City Centre.

Four public buses pass through the Adelaide Airport, two of which go via the city. They are collectively called the JetBus:

• J1: Elizabeth to Glenelg via city
• J2: Greenwith to Harbour Town via city
• J7: West Lakes to Marion Shopping Centre
• J8: West Lakes to Marion Shopping Centre

To get to the bus from Adelaide Airport to City, you will need to catch either the J1 or J2 – and you will be looking for the ones travelling to Elizabeth & Greenwith, not Glenelg nor Harbour Town as they are going in the opposite directions.

In the city, the buses run from one side to the other along Currie & Grenfell Streets, so choose the stop that is nearest your accommodation. You can see a map of the routes here . The trip into the city on the bus will take 25-30 minutes.

The bus stop can be found a short walk from the airport exit. Make your way diagonally left across the plaza until you meet the road, then turn to your left. The bus stop is around 50m along the road on the same side.

These buses run on the Adelaide public transport system, so if you have a MetroCard you can use that to catch the bus.

If you don’t have a card, there is a yellow ticket machine located at the bus stop where you can purchase a single ticket to get you into the city centre.

An adult ticket is currently $6.20 (Oct 2023) but depending on the time of day (between 9 am & 3 pm weekdays, all day Sundays and public holidays), you may be able to get an off-peak ticket for $4.

Note: From late 2023 you will not need to purchase a ticket, just swipe and pay with a credit/debit card or your smart device if you have it set up. Fares will be $4.25 during peak hours and $2.40 for off-peak.

To catch the bus to Adelaide Airport on your way home, there will be a bus stop approximately opposite the road where you got off. This time you are looking for the buses going to Glenelg and Harbour Town.

If you prefer to arrive in a new location and see a person with your name on a card waiting for you, then this is the option for you.

It’s also a great option sometimes if you have 3-4 people as the price per person becomes quite reasonable. Sometimes too you just want to know that everything is sorted before you arrive and you can relax and start your holiday.

Here are a few options you might like to consider for your private transfer from Adelaide Airport to city:

• Adelaide Airport Private Chauffered Transfer – A stock standard private transfer from Adelaide Airport
• Round Trip Transfer in Private Vehicle – Book your round trip now so that your transport to Adelaide Airport is already organised, making for a hassle-free holiday
• Adelaide Airport Arrival Transfer in a Luxury Car – Indulge yourself and try one of these luxury cars with the transfers from Adelaide Airport to city.
• Private Minivan Transfer – If you have a larger group or lots of luggage, then a minivan transfer may be the best way to go (you can also book this as a round trip too if you prefer)

As usual, if you are looking for a hire car, Adelaide Airport has a whole selection of popular car hire companies located within the terminal.

You can find the hire car desks to the left as you come down the escalators, opposite the baggage carousels. To ensure that the car you would like to hire is available for you on arrival, I recommend you book in advance.

I use and recommend Rental Cars to search for and book cars as one search covers all of the car rental companies, and compares them on the same page.

Uber, and other ride-share companies, are available at Adelaide Airport. When you book you will be directed to the ride-share pick-up location.

To get there, as you leave the airport, head to the left, diagonally crossing the plaza. You will see pedestrian lights to cross the road, and once across, the Ride Share area is just to the left.

It will only take you 2-3 minutes to walk, and there are signs to follow along the way.

While Uber fees are variable depending on time and demand, expect to pay around $20-$25 to get into the city centre. Note that there is a $3 Adelaide Airport-imposed fee on all vehicles leaving the airport.

Uber may be the most popular, but you can also use other ride-share providers in Adelaide too. Companies such as Ola, Go Catch, Shebah and MyCar will pick you up here too.

As always, taxi transport from Adelaide Airport to city is available too.

To find the taxis, walk across the plaza outside the airport towards the left-hand side and you should see a line of taxis waiting at the taxi rank to take you to your destination.

Make your way to the front of the line and jump in the first available cab.

Taxi fares to the city should be around the $25-$30 mark. While we don’t generally have an issue in Australia, still ensure the meter is running on your trip. Again, taxis will charge you the extra $3 airport fee on top of the metered tariff.

Note: Taxi drivers should not enter the airport to tout for business. If you are approached by anyone in the terminal offering to drive you, politely decline and walk on. They could be trying to scam you.

While this is rare (in fact I’ve never heard of it happening in Adelaide) it has happened at interstate airports so it’s always possible that it could happen here too.

Before Covid, there was a shuttle bus from Adelaide Airport to the city centre. While flights are beginning to come back, the city shuttle has not yet returned.

This will be updated with the details when the shuttle bus to Adelaide Airport begins again.

The other place in Adelaide that visitors often want to go to is Glenelg. Many of the options above, such as private transfers, taxis and Uber will also get you to Glenelg.

Visitors can also catch the J1 bus in the opposite direction to go to Glenelg. There does not appear to be a shuttle bus option at the moment, but perhaps once Covid passes, that will be remedied.

If you are arriving in Adelaide late in the evening or you have a very early flight when you depart, you may prefer to spend the night at the Atura Adelaide Airport hotel.

The hotel is metres from the door of the airport – there’s not even a road to cross. The hotel was only opened in 2018 and has a contemporary, modern feel.

Some of the higher rooms have views over the runway, perfect for the plane spotters in your group. The onsite restaurant continues the airport theme; it’s the Hangar Bar & Grill.

Where is the shuttle pick-up location at ADL Airport?

Shared ride vans: Airport City Shuttle

Go to the Information and Tourism Bookings Booth located on the ground floor of the terminal in a central location. The friendly staff will help you with your booking and inform you of the next shuttle time.

Buses: JetExpress and JetBus

Pick-up/drop-off location is at the bus stop on the left side of the plaza as you leave the Terminal. 

Rideshare: Uber

The designated pick-up facility is just to the left of the short term car park as you leave the Terminal. Walk across the main pedestrian plaza and then cross at the pedestrian lights at the pick-up and drop-off zone.

Public Transportation

Public transport is a very popular and very cheap option almost everywhere. If you want to use public transport to/from Adelaide Airport, we’ll provide you with all the information you need.

Adelaide Metro offers an express double-decker bus service called JetExpress between the airport and the city.

Adelaide Metro bus

From the airport of Adelaide there are 2 buses running to the centre of Adelaide, Glenelg and West Beach.

• JetBus (J1) : 7 days a week between the airport, the centre, Glenelg and West Beach. Duration: 18 minutes.
• JetExpress (J1X) : from Monday until Friday, only between the airport and the centre. Duration: 18 minutes.

The buses depart from bus stop 10 Airport Road – South East Side (near LOT 50 Sir Donald Bradman Drive at Adelaide Airport). You can buy your ticket from the bus driver.

AU$3.50 / € 2,50 per person one way (Monday – Friday 09.00-15.00h / 09.00am-03.00pm, and on Sundays and public holidays). AU$5.40 / € 4,00 per person one way (Monday – Friday before 09.00h / 09.00am and after 15.00h / 03.00pm, and on Saturday). AU$10.20 / € 7 per person (day ticket).

It is also possible to purchase a Metrocard . The costs are AU$5 / € 3,50. With the travel credit you can add on the card, you can travel at reduced rates.

AU$1.99 / € 1,50 per person one way (Monday – Friday 09.00-15.00h / 09.00am-03.00pm, and on Sundays and public holidays). AU$3.62 / € 2,50 per person one way (Monday – Friday before 09.00h / 09.00am and after 15.00h / 03.00pm, and on Saturday).

You will recognize the desk by the orange TV-screen with City Shuttle.

Northern Flyer:

Adelaide Airport – outside the centre of Adelaide. You can request the rates via the online request form or via the customer service on (08)72891065 (within Australia) or +61 872 891 065 (7 days a week, 09.00-18.00h / 09.00am-06.00pm).

If you want to use the shuttle from the city to the airport, you need to contact the customer service 24 hours before departure on +61 433 533 718 (7 days a week, 09.00-18.00h / 09.00am-06.00pm).

AU$16-21 / € 11-14. Duration: 12-15 minutes.

AU$29-37 / € 19,50-25. Duration: 12-15 minutes. 

If you will be picked up from the airport, the driver will be waiting for you at the Ride Share Pickup area. As soon as you walk out of the terminal and follow the signs Ride Share Pickup area, you will find your driver at the Ride Share Pickup area, located opposite the square and left of the parking garage.

AU$25-30 / € 17-20 (excluding AUD$2 / € 1,50 airport tax). Duration 12-15 minutes. The taxi stand can be found on the left, within walking distance from the terminal.
