It was my first Vance Joy gig, not my first time seeing an artist play in the venue though.

The support act was well-chosen and energetic, the main set nice, however it was only 1 1/4 hours - a fact that I heard other people talk about afterwards, too, but who knows if he was just sick or tired or something.

Oh, and (I don't want to dictate how a musician should perform, but) I would have loved a little more engaging with the crowd. But I guess that's a total matter of taste, I just prefer more talking and banter in-between songs.

All in all neither the best concert I've ever been to, nor in any way a bad one.

Got home from the concert and still buzzing from the wonderful evening.

Vance is amazing - very interactive with his audience.

My absolute favourite thing that kept me smiling all night is the way Vance is 'marching' on the spot with his music.

What a guy.

I took my teenage son and his girlfriend this evening and the three of us had a great night.

What an amazing venue, so intimate and a great set up.

As I have written before: "We're going home" is my favourite song, because it reminds me of home in The Netherlands. I am the only one that migrated to Australia. Sometimes the song makes me happy and sometimes it makes me sad, sometimes I feel homesick.

Amazing, fantastic! The support acts were brilliant too and they were a perfect match for this style of music. Vance Joy was so generous with his time! He sang for 1 1/2 hours, every set was brilliant. We were right down the front and it felt like he was singing and talking to us. Vance Joy spoke during each song, gave background to them and he was so normal. It was just amazing He also had a great backing band and he spent time introducing each person. It was the best concert I have ever been to and that includes Ed Sheehan (though that was also amazing).

With borders opening-up around the globe, Joy is ready to embark on new travels. From next September, he’ll hit the road for "The Long Way Home Tour." And new music is coming.

With No. 1s, awards, a song that has raced past one billion streams, and supports for Taylor Swift and Pink , V ance Joy is a well-travelled man.

But it could have been so very different. The Melbourne-raised singer and songwriter (real name James Keogh) had something of a sliding doors moment a decade ago, when a song came to him while he was completing his law degree.

“I was finishing my last class, a summer class. I must have failed a subject along the way and needed to fill a gap,” he recounts. As he hit the books, he wrote lyrics in his notepad. Those lyrics would become “Riptide”.

“It’s funny how that song came along at the last moment of my studies. It came along at that important moment when I was deciding how I was going to spend the next year. That was fortunate. For whatever reason it opened-up at exactly the right time.”

In music, timing is everything. “Riptide” was the zeitgeist. It topped triple j’s Hottest 100 poll, won APRA’s song of the year in 2014, caught the attention of TayTay, and it changed the artist’s life.

To date, Joy’s singles, which include “Mess is Mine,” “Georgia,” “Fire and the Flood,” “Lay It On Me,” “I’m With You,” “Saturday Sun” and “We’re Going Home,” have been streamed more than 3.2 billion times.

The legal community’s loss is the music industry’s gain. With the prospect of a career behind a desk in the rearview, Joy has released two studio albums, both of which hit No. 1 on the albums chart in his homeland. Dream Your Life Away , his debut from 2014, hit No. 17 on the Billboard 200; and 2018’s Nation of Two peaked at No. 10 in the United States.

Vance Joy Fits 'Missing Piece' Atop Adult Alternative Airplay Chart

Music has taken Joy to arenas and stadiums around the globe, and created opportunities to live abroad. There was a stint in Los Angeles several years ago, and, now, Joy calls Barcelona home. “It’s a beautiful city that cares about art,” he explains. Joy fell for the home of Gaudi while visiting prior to Pink’s Beautiful Trauma World Tour , for which he opened on the European leg. He also fell for a girl, and they’ve been together ever since.

His Spanish is ok, but not great, he admits. Catalan is another challenge altogether. “I would like to learn,” he tells Billboard over a Zoom call, “but I also feel like my attempts to learn a new language are doomed.”

With borders re-opening around the globe, Joy is ready to embark on new travels. From September 2022, he’ll hit the road for The Long Way Home Tour , a two-month run spanning 13 outdoor concerts across Australia, including a special date at the Sydney Opera House Forecourt.

His first tour in four years will be his biggest-ever headline trek of Australia. The dates are presented by Frontier Touring, triple j, Village Sounds and UNIFIED, with supports including The Rubens, Thelma Plum, Middle Kids, Budjerah and Mia Wray.

International shows will be announced in due course.

When asked if his next run will support a new, third album, Joy didn’t flinch. “Yes, yes definitely. There’ll be an album out,” he tells Billboard .

Thanks in part to the downtime created by the pandemic, Joy has made a good start on his next musical phase. A new song, “Missing Piece,” dropped this year, scooped five nominations this the upcoming ARIA Awards, and recently led Billboard’s Adult Alternative Airplay chart. Other works are taking shape.

“It’s a bit unorthodox releasing a tour before the album is all locked away, but for me it’s nice to have some deadlines, to help motivate me,” he explains. “We’ve been operating in a bit of a vacuum, where there’s been no deadlines. Things can drag out for years. I’m glad there are some deadlines, to get things done and focus on other things. I might be closer than I realize (to completing the album) but I still want to keep writing songs.”

Vance Joy Concert Review: Some ‘Saturday Sun’ to Cure the Boston Cold

Feb 8. was a regular Wednesday night in Boston — predictably windy, reliably cold, eerily quiet in Fenway. Though for the select few who were lucky enough to fill the audience at MGM Music Hall, the night was full of an unpredictable radiance and warmth as Vance Joy stopped by on his “In Our Own Sweet Time” tour.

As one of the first stops on the international tour, the Australian singer-songwriter graced the stage to promote his 2022 album, “In Our Own Sweet Time.”Despite the setlist highlighting his new music, Joy made sure to sprinkle in classic fan favorites — “Saturday Sun,” “Missing Piece,” “Fire and the Flood,” and of course “Riptide” — throughout the setlist.

It’s quite common nowadays for concerts to overstimulate on the audiovisuals — to swell with complicated light displays, costume changes, and background dancers. But not in a Vance Joy concert. Vance Joy stands out in his ability to turn simple melodies into songs that change people, and his concert exemplified his appreciation for simplicity. Between fan favorites, Joy gave fans a glimpse into his musical process, offering an inside look into his life as a songwriter.

During the show, Joy candidly admitted how hard it can be to begin the writing process for a song. Between songs, Joy specifically commented on the creation of “Every Side Of You” and how this song broke him out of a period of writer's block.

“I was watching Sopranos, and not really doing too much. Eventually, I was like, ‘Come on man, you gotta write a song’ and this was the first song that came along” said Joy. “ It gave me a bit of encouragement, got me started writing songs, and finally making this album.”

The rest of the concert highlighted Joy’s musical prowess, as he expertly played his acoustic guitar and ukulele throughout the entire concert. When speaking about his song “Way That I’m Going,” Joy explained that he uses these instruments and surprisingly minimalistic chords to create simple but effective music.

“I always get obsessed with chord progressions. This song is four chords and for about three years I kept playing this same series of chords. I tried to write heaps of songs with these chords and none of them worked. Eventually, the right song came along.”

Much like writers find inspiration from their everyday encounters, Joy preserves the seemingly insignificant, finite moments of life with song. Joy specifically commented on the origin of the lyrics for his song, “I’m With You.”

“I was hanging with my friend and in her house, she had this painting — it’s like this abstract art painting that one of her brothers did,” said Joy. “On the painting, there's this line written into it that says ‘this rain changes everything.’ And I guess when I walk around daily, if someone says something cool or if I see something or read something, I just write it into my phone, and then hopefully later it finds its way into a song”

Joy used this short phrase to create an entire story in his song, “I’m With You,” singing, “We fell asleep to escape from the sun / And we woke up to the sound of a storm outside / You looked at me and said "baby, this rain changes everything" / And my heart ran away from me.”

On stage, Joy’s appreciation for music extended far beyond himself — Joy spent time thanking each band member, carefully timing the announcing of each member’s name during the quietest lulls in the crowd to ensure that every audience member could clap for each individual artist. Trumpet player, Kelly O’Donohue, was one of the most memorable band members, complimenting Joy’s songs effortlessly with floating high notes.

There’s a reason why his last name is Joy. The concert was not only a celebration of the songs that we know and love, but a celebration of the process of creating music itself — tediously testing different chords, listening for the perfect lyric, and collaborating with local artists to create a night radiating with inspiration. Fans left reminded to appreciate life a little more and with a sense of gratitude to Vance Joy for making Boston just a bit brighter on that cold winter night.
