Diving in Belize

With more than 180 miles of barrier reef, hundreds of square miles of shallow reefs and three offshore atolls, Belize has ample diving variety

Colorful Reefs, Green Jungles and a Blue Hole

Flanked by the world's second longest coral reefs, Belize rewards divers with a rich array of underwater environments ripe for discovery and rich in fish life. Just inside the reef, a string of small coastal islands known as cayes is a short boat ride away from lively spur-and-groove reefs. Offshore atolls add steep walls, schooling fish and the famous Blue Hole. On southern reefs, seasonal fish spawns draw massive whale sharks. Expansive shallows between cayes and the mainland serve as an aquatic playground for kayakers, fishermen and sailors, while the rainforests and mountains of the interior offer Mayan ruins, jungle river drifts, cave tours, off-roading, hiking and more.

Belize is home the world’s third largest barrier offering intrepid divers many wondrous creatures like this flamingo tongue snail

  • Best for: Divers of all ability levels
  • Best season to visit: The dry season, January to early June, offers better visibility on reefs closer to the mainland. Lighter winds in summer months make for more comfortable rides to offshore atolls. April and May offer an ideal combination of conditions
  • Weather: Belize enjoys a sub-tropical climate moderated by Caribbean sea breezes. Winter temperatures occasionally dip below 70 during northerlies, while summers may reach into the 90s, with increased humidity and rain showers after June

Belize Information

About diving in belize.

There are three primary areas of diving activity in Belize. Ambergris Caye is the country's most popular destination, and home to a number of dive resorts and charter operators who access nearby sites along the barrier reef, plus all-day excursions to the offshore atolls. The atolls—Lighthouse, Glovers and Turneffe—deliver dramatic walls and lively inner reefs with consistently good conditions. South of Belize City, the Placencia area is the gateway to miles of less-visited reefs and small, uninhabited islands ringed in white sand beaches. Water temperatures range from the high 70s to mid 80s.

Diving in Belize Tips

When diving the spur and groove formations near Ambergris Cay, save some air to explore the shallow beds inside the reef for the best chance to see small invertebrates, lobsters and rays. Manatees may also make a swim by, so scan the horizon every so often. Don't be surprised if you see reef sharks gliding up from the depths when descending into the Blue Hole. They won't attack.

Best Places to Dive in Belize

At Lighthouse Reef, the Aquarium combines a dramatic wall with a large number of colorful reef fish. Depth and shadows add drama to the stalagmites and ledges of the Blue Hole. Whale sharks make seasonal appearances at Gladen Spit. At Turneffe, the Elbow is a magnificent wall that sees a number of fish spawning aggregations. The Silk Cays combine reef diving with a deserted-island interlude. Near Ambergris, the crevices and caverns of Tackle Box Canyon hide a wealth of marine life discoveries.

What to Pack for Diving in Belize

In winter months include a windbreaker on the dive boat in anticipation of cooler north winds. Bring a dive light to illuminate reclusive marine life at sites such as Silver Caves, and to experience the Blue Hole.

Belize Aggressor IV

With more than 180 miles of the barrier reef, hundreds of square miles of shallow reefs and three offshore atolls, Belize has ample diving variety. To the north, the shores of Ambergris Caye are home to a number of first-class resorts that offer easy two-tank excursions to nearby sites on the reef line. Options include large spur-and-groove formations that resemble underwater canyons, deeper drops, stand-along coral heads and one wreck. Currents are generally mild to non-existent on these sites, and variable depths accommodate both novices and divers versed in multi-level computer profiles. Nearby is the  Hol Chan Marine Reserve , where the steep-sided walls of a cut in the reef attract large schools of fish and support lush coral growth. This is one of the few sites where currents can be strong. Also in the reserve is Shark Ray Alley. Here, stingrays and nurse sharks accustomed to receiving bait scraps from fishermen will gather when boats arrive, and divers can immerse in the swirling mass with no fears for their safety. The offshore atolls of Turneffe Island, Lighthouse Reef and Glover's Reef offer the most dramatic underwater topographies and consistently clearest waters. Steep outer walls feature tunnels, swim-throughs and large projecting coral buttresses, and hold schools of jacks, permits and spadefish. Without a doubt, the best-known dive site in all of Belize is the Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef. This symmetrical, 412-foot deep hole was made famous by scuba pioneer  Jacques Cousteau,  who moored his Calypso in the hole's center. As divers drop deeper, the vertical walls of the hole receded, revealing huge stalactites. Recently, sharks have become more numerous at the site, adding an extra degree of adventure. Turneffe Island is the largest of the atolls, with interior shallows that shelter hundreds of small mangrove islands. These islands serve as fish nurseries and increase the area’s biodiversity. Equally diverse as the fish life is the range of dive sites, which include wrecks, novice-friendly shallow reefs and deep walls. Glover's Reef is too far from Ambergris Caye for day trips and therefore sees fewer visitors. Trips are best arranged from operations located on the cayes. Near the full moons of April to June, the spawning activities of cubera snapper and other fish attract whale sharks to Glovers Reef and to the section of the southern barrier reef known as Gladden Spit. Whale sharks are  plankton eaters , and eggs released during spawning are an easy and abundant food source. The southern section of Belize's barrier reef sits farther from shore. This results in clearer waters, but also longer boat rides from shore-based resorts in areas such as Placencia. The reef becomes a more continuous ridge from Southwater Caye Marine Reserve south, and cuts in the reef become focal points for fish life. A favorite destination is  Laughing Bird Caye National Park , which supports large stands of staghorn and elkhorn corals, along with thick growths of tunicates and anemones. On the sheltered inside of the reef, coral islands provide relaxing second dives.

Passport and/or Visa Requirements

A current passport, valid through your departure date, is required for entry into Belize. Your passport needs to have at least 1 blank page for the entry stamp. Proof of onward or return flights may be required at entry as well. No visa is required for stays less than 30 days. Upon departure from Belize, there is a departure tax which should be included on your international ticket.

Check the entry/exit requirements  here .

Immunizations

There are no required immunizations for entry into Belize, although you should check with your doctor and reference the  Centers for Disease Control  on recommended vaccinations.

Culture and Customs

Belize is a true melting pot of cultures, stretching back to the stone cities of the ancient Maya, and the Arawak roots of the Garfunkel dialect that are still heard through the country. British settlers arrived in the 1600s, and English remains the nation's official language. But Spanish influences are equally prevalent, and Mennonite, Creole, Lebanese, Chinese, and East Indian immigrants have all left their mark on the collective consciousness. Today, they are all just Belizeans, and everyone gets along in a society that places a high value on civility and inclusion. This is a country that doesn't need an excuse to dance and throw a party. Weekends are reason enough for celebration, and dozens of festivals,  carnivals and concerts  are staged throughout the year. Head up to the country into the rainforest and wooded mountains of the interior and you are in the land of Indiana Jones where thatch-roofed eco lodges serve as base camps for jungle hikes and inner tube drifts through river caves. Head offshore and island times takes over when you land on the offshore cayes. On Ambergris Caye a flipflop and tank top vibe permeates the beach town of  San Pedro , where beach bikes are the preferred mode of transportation, and packed-sand streets are fronted by colorfully painted wooden shops and taverns.

Electricity, Phone and Internet Access

Belize electricity is 110 Volt/60 cycles and uses the same plug types as the U.S., so no converters are required.

Belize has a standardized seven-digit phone numbering system and a country code of 501.

Many hotels offer WiFi. Be sure to check with your mobile provider to see if International plans are available for phone and data usage while in Belize.

Water Quality

Bottled water is recommended in Belize and readily available for purchase and also supplied by some resorts.

Language & Currency

English is the official language, but Spanish is widely spoken. Other languages spoken are Maya, Garifuna, and Creole.

The BelizeDdollar (BZD) is pegged to the US dollar at 2:1 - always verify whether you are paying U.S. or Belize Dollars. It's easy to change U.S. dollars just about anywhere.

ATMs are available in many cities and accept major cards such as Visa, Mastercard, Cirrus, although cash will be dispensed in Belize Dollars.

Most businesses will accept U.S. cash without question. They usually give change in Belizean Dollars, though they may return U.S. change if you ask.

Belize is on Central Standard Time, 6 hours behind Greenwich Mean Time (-6 GMT). Belize does not observe daylight saving time.

Location, Size and Population

Belize is located on the Eastern coast of Central America, along the Caribbean Coast. Its capital city is Belmopan.

Belize is bounded on the North by Mexico, South, and West by Guatemala, and the beautiful Caribbean Sea washes its 174-mile coastline to the East.

Belize has an area of 8,866 sq. miles including 266 sq. miles of islands.

The population of Belize is 367,177 (2016), while the island of Ambergris caye has an estimated 22,000, the area of Placencia approximately 1,500 and the area of Dangriga close to 10,000.

Scuba Diving

Belize dive resort.

Situated on the mainland coast of the Caribbean Sea and nestled in Central America, Belize is rightly deserving of its reputation as one of the region’s best dive destinations.

Belize is home to some of the most amazing dive sites in the world. In addition to Belize having the longest stretch of coral reef in the Western Hemisphere, it is also home to three of the four atolls found throughout the Caribbean: Turneffe Reef Atoll, Glovers Reef Atoll, and Lighthouse Reef Atoll which holds our most popular site for avid divers, the Belize Blue Hole.

With shallow coral gardens and steep drop-offs that are home to many exotic flora and fauna the variety of underwater vistas to explore is endless. The Belize coast also boasts caves, grottoes, and coral atolls that are simply waiting to be uncovered. Belize has exceptional clarity and visibility almost year round and divers simply revel in the breathtaking beauty of the underwater world of Belize.

Our location along the southern coast of Belize makes Belizean Dreams Resort one of the only all inclusive resorts just a few miles away from Belize’s most popular dives sites. This means you can enjoy the comfort of our resort amenities all within close proximity to our Belize dive sites. We welcome dive groups of any size and experience levels. If you are not certified and would like to dive, take advantage of our Belize diving courses offered at Belizean Dreams Resort.

Belize’s water temperature averages between 79 and 83 degrees. While this is warm, you can get chilled after prolonged exposure. We recommend a 3mm full suit, long arms and long legs over a shortie, because of the pica-pica and because of sunburn, which is a real issue in Belize. Pica-pica is a thimble jellyfish larvae and when they arrive there is no avoiding them when they show up. There is no schedule they adhere to, sometimes we won’t see any for months, then suddenly there they appear, two times in one week. A full body suit protects you from their sting.

Belize rightly deserves its reputation as one the Caribbean's best dive destinations. Unlike some of the region's other destinations where scuba is an add-on to your beach holiday, the diving in Belize is so good that it can be considered an excellent dive destination with some nice beach activity as an add-on! It's home to the world's second-longest barrier reef and 3 of only 4 true coral atolls in the western hemisphere.

Belize's barrier reef runs almost parallel to the coastline and your best bet for land-based diving package is to stay close to the action in a resort on either of Ambergris Caye or Turneffe Atoll: This way you are right in the heart of some of the best diving and within reach of places like the famous Great Blue Hole at Lighthouse Reef. Exploring the local sites will keep you interested for several days and both places have impressive variety, both in terms of topography and marine life.

If you plan on touring around Belize during your visit, pristine rainforest, ancient ruins, the Belize Barrier Reef and its beautiful atolls, all testify to the country as a unique and exceptional dive trip destination. With 93% of its land under forest cover and 42% of it under some form of legal protected status, it is one of the world's most biologically diverse countries. And unlike most other places in Central America, English is widely spoken.

Where to Stay in Belize

To be right on the doorstep of some of Belize's finest diving, we strongly recommend you take a resort package on one of the offshore islands which cater well to scuba divers:

• Ambergris Caye Dive Packages

Ambergris is Belize's largest offshore key and ideal for a resort stay close to Belize's barrier reef. The reef runs parallel to the shore and consists of a great variety of diving in different ecosystems: mangrove cayes, coral reefs, seagrass bed and lagoons. The close proximity of the reef minimizes trip times to the sites. [More information on these dive sites: Ambergris Caye ].

It is the country's most popular travel destination and features many shops, restaurants, and bars as well as some resorts for divers, ranging from luxury to budget. If you prefer to be close to all the activity and enjoy both the barrier reef and capture the nightlife and Caribbean island charm of Belize, resort diving packages in this area are a good option. For those that prefer to find their own accommodation, we also offer day trips from Ambergris Caye .

• Turneffe Atoll Island Dive Packages

Turneffe is the largest and most spectacular of the 3 atolls in Belize and there are dive sites here to suit all experience levels, from shallow reefs to wrecks and drop-offs. Big fish action can include groupers, large schools of snappers, manta rays, eagle rays, nurse sharks and, if you are lucky, even toadfish and dolphins. [More information on these dive sites: Turneffe Atoll ].

It is home to a small number of picturesque dive resorts that allow diving from your doorstep. The marine biodiversity and sheer numbers if fish are unmatched in this region and this means that scuba is the main focus of most guests who choose to stay here. Due to its remote location, the dive sites of Turneffe are less busy than those at Ambergris.

Key Travel Facts

The climate and best time to go.

Rainy season is roughly June through November and the dry season is December through May , which tends to be the warmest month. Being in the Caribbean, weather is varied. November through February can see 'Northers' blowing in which bring temperatures down with rain and choppy seas. Historically, most hurricanes occur in the August and October period here, although there hasn't been one since 2000.

Temperatures from April through October are 77-95°F (25-35°C), November through March are cooler at between 70-90°F (20-30°C). It may be slightly cooler than this on the mainland, especially in the south. There is usually a breeze, which is good considering the high humidity of above 80%.

Although Belize is a year round diving destination, the best conditions are generally considered to be from March through December as there is generally less wind then. Water temperatures range from 79-84°F (26-29°C). Conditions do vary across the country and there is some important seasonal information regarding specific marine creatures, so check our dive site descriptions for more details on the seasons in each resort destination.

How to Get There

The Philip Goldson International Airport is in Ladyville, some 10 miles (16 km) from Belize City. Unreliable buses and taxis run from the airport to the city center which takes about 30 minutes. However, many tourism operators run an airport pick-up service.

There are international flights to Belize from various cities in the USA such as Los Angeles, Atlanta, Dallas, Charlotte, Houston and Miami, as well as from various Central American countries. It is only a 2 hour flight from continental United States. Major airlines which service Belize include Continental, Delta, American, Grupo TACA and US Airways. There are also 2 local airlines, Maya Island Air and Tropic Air, that fly to Belize every day from Flores in Guatemala and Cancun in Mexico.

Sometimes travelers need to cancel trips for the most unexpected reasons so we recommend you consider insurance to cover both diving and travel activities. Visit our insurance program section for a competitive price:

Tourist Visas

North Americans, nationals of the United Kingdom and most countries in the British Commonwealth, member states of the European Union or CARICOM, and much of Central America do not require visas. Visas are needed if you are a national of China, Colombia, Cuba, India, Libya, Pakistan, Peru or Taiwan.

You will need a passport valid for 6 months beyond your intended stay and a return ticket. Visitors are permitted to stay for up to 30 days and extensions may be granted when in the country. You may be asked to show that you have sufficient funds for your visit (US$ 50 per person per day), plus an onward ticket.

Visitor Health

Belize is free of serious epidemic diseases and no vaccinations are required for entry in to Belize. However, there are areas where yellow fever and dengue fever are more prevalent. Extra caution and the use of anti-malarials are advised for extended stays in the jungle. For vaccinations and other health precautions, we recommend you consult your local doctor when planning your Belize dive trip.

Belize City has a hospital and several private medical centers and clinics for less serious issues.

For scuba divers, there is a hyperbaric chamber on Ambergris Caye.

Tourist Security and Safety

Belize is not a particularly dangerous place but, as with many destinations, a little common sense goes a long way. If you are staying in a remote diving resort, then your exposure to any risk is likely to be less than someone staying in Belize City.

The usual advice applies to visiting Belize, including avoiding dark or suspicious looking areas, not wearing expensive jewelry or accessories, and staying in groups. If you are going to be taking tours off the beaten track, then you should be sure to do so with a qualified guide.

Useful Tips for Tourists

Sightseeing, activities and adventure.

Belize sits right in the heart of Central America, flanked by Mexico and Guatemala, and is lapped on its shoreline by the Western Caribbean Sea. Historically it has maintained a rather low profile but in recent times the profile of the country as a tourist destination has risen thanks to the twin wonders of its Mayan history and its underwater splendor.

The Caracol Ruins are the most high profile of the Mayan ruins, set close to Guatemala in the Chiquibul Forest, and are a must-see for anyone who intends to spend time on the mainland to learn about the areas ancient peoples and culture. Altun Ha was a major trade center and is the most extensively excavated ruin in Belize. There are 13 temples and residences to view here. Cerros and Lamanai , with its long history and beautiful scenic setting, are also worth a visit.

The Museum of Belize is a former colonial prison and much of it is dedicated to displaying this aspect of its history. It also is a great place to introduce the ancient Mayan and colonial history of the country. Built in the 19th century, it is an impressive brick building found at the corner of Gabourel and Hutson streets in Belize City.

Belize Zoo , some 31 miles (50 km) west of the capital, enjoys international acclaim as a wildlife education center exhibiting over 100 native species, the larger of which are housed in sizeable enclosures allowing a good degree of natural behavior.

Belize is the same as United States Central Time, -6 GMT

Business Hours in Belize

Banks: Monday - Thursday 08:00 to 13:00 hrs, Friday 08:00 to 13:00 and 15:00 to 16:00. Industry: Monday - Friday 08:00 to 12:00 hrs, 13:00 to 17:00. Some businesses are open on Saturday.

The Belize Dollar (BZ$) has a fixed exchange rate of BZ$2 to US$1. The majority of hotels, resorts, restaurants, and tour operators will accept US currency, travelers checks, or credit card. Credit card payments often attract a 5% service charge. Always make sure that you understand which dollar rate is being quoted as the term 'dollar' is what you will hear for both currencies.

Electricity

Although most of the electricity is provided by diesel/generator sets, the power is stable at 110/220 volts AC, 60 Hz - the same voltage as in the USA. Plugs are either North American 3-pin flat blades with round grounding pin, or British 3-pin rectangular blade plugs.

Communications

Internet service is widely available but is still expensive so do not expect internet cafes on every street corner. Some hotels will be connected, possibly with satellite internet, but as a general rule you might not be able to have access for several days during your stay. However, the Belizean dive resorts that we offer do provide a wi-fi service. Telephone and fax facilities are widely available. The international dialing country code for Belize is +501.

The postal service in Belize is quite reliable and air mail takes about 8 days to Europe, 2 days to the USA. The main post office is on the north side of the swing bridge in Belize City.

Codes of Behavior

Tipping and bargaining.

Tipping is customary in restaurants where there is no service charge included and 10-15% is the norm. Higher end hotels, resorts and tour operators often include a 10% service charge meaning that further tipping is not required. Private tour guides may also expect a similar gratuity.

Formal clothing is almost never a necessity, even in the most expensive places. Wear cool light clothing, avoid excessive sweating and fungal infections. Protect yourself from the strong sun. Polarized sunglasses, a hat, and the rest of the "slip, slop, slap, wrap" advice should be heeded. You should be aware that refreshments are not always readily available when sightseeing, so pack all necessities in a small backpack.

Criminality

Crime should not be a major concern for most tourists. Avoid wearing expensive jewelry or accessories and exercise a reasonable amount of caution as "a stranger in a strange land". Deep inland there are probably some miscreants ferrying cocaine upstream or across borders but we do not expect Dive The World customers to encounter any such individuals.

Dive resorts in Belize offer the enticing mix of good Caribbean scuba diving combined with an excellent tropical rain forest, exotic birds, and historical Mayan ruins.  Belize diving is pre-dominantly land-based but you can also find liveaboards in Belize .

Belize is easy to get to from the United States, and there is a good mix of budget, mid-range, and luxury resorts. Most resorts offer jungle tours and bird or nature walks, as well as exhilarating adventure activities like cave tubing or waterfall rappelling. Belize is a destination that caters to both thrill seekers and travelers looking to relax on island time at the beach. It is the perfect destination to combine stellar diving with amazing topside experiences!

Ambergris caye.

Ambergris Caye offers easy access to Belize's best dive sites, including Lighthouse Reef and the world-renowned Blue Hole. Ambergris Caye is also known for its lively nightlife scene.

the BLUE HOLE

HALF MOON CAYE

This small tropical island, home to many bird species is a popular destination for a nice lunch on the beach. Those not interested in watching birds can explore the white sandy beaches and warm shallow waters. There’s even an opportunity for some great snorkeling right near the dock where the boats park.

Turneffe Atoll

Considered one of the better (if not the best) dive areas in Belize, the atoll is a large offshore reef filled with white-spotted toadfish, eagle rays, groupers, nurse sharks, jacks, snappers and so much more.

If you want to get away from the crowds, Placencia in southern Belize is the best place for you. There are great topside wildlife areas that are also close to many great Mayan ruins. At Gladden Spit, another marine reserve, there is a chance of seeing a big whale shark.

"The diving was amazing! We were the only divers staying there so we had our own private dive master for most of the trip. The southern belizean barrier reef is beautiful and healthy. Coco plum is the most well run resort I have ever been to. Definitely going to be back!"

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. We were able to relax, rest and unplug. Thank You!

Your staff is special – it was so wonderful to be recognized by name and have our preferences remembered.

Keep doing what you are doing! We don’t want to go home.

Hamanasi surpassed our high expectations for location and accommodation… We travel a lot and stay 5* and this is the best staff ever. Friendly, attentive, courteous, excellent! I cannot say enough good things about the staff!

Congratulations Hamanasi staff on exceeding our expectations. You gave us paradise!

Hard to improve on perfection! Without doubt, the best overall vacation experience I have ever had.

Adventures of a Lifetime

Our knowledgeable guides will help you explore the best of Belize, both on and offshore.

Jaguar Preserve Night Hike

Barrier reef snorkeling, barrier reef diving, magical maya history tour, jungle river canoeing, romance is in the air.

Whether it’s your honeymoon, a romantic getaway or even a private beach wedding, you’ll find our secluded Belize resort and luxurious, idyllic setting irresistible.

Tropical Dreams Wedding Package

Love is in the air, honeymoon & seaside romance package, location, location, location.

At Hamanasi you’ll be just a day-trip away from Belize’s best attractions, both inland and offshore.

Everything surpassed our expectations. We came here as new diver because we wanted an operation we could trust and we found that here.

Just keep doing what you’re doing… The Mayan tour history was incredible; the guide was extremely knowledgeable and profoundly connected to his heritage.

Best dive experience we have ever had. Everyone top Notch. Best vacation ever!

Wonderful stay, beautiful surroundings. The staff was unfailingly friendly and accommodating. Adventures were great and well organized!

Hamanasi helped introduce my family to the Garifuna & Maya people of Belize. Everything is so close – the mountains, caves, waterfalls, animals, ruins – this is such a peaceful country with rich culture and a people that cares about the environment. What a hidden gem! Thank you!

The Best of Belize, On & Offshore

From Reef to Rainforest, explore it all with Hamanasi with one Belize all-inclusive package.

Our Reef and Rainforest Packages

All inclusive belize vacation packages.

There was nothing we would have changed. Hamanasi made our honeymoon the best we could have imagined. Thank you!

The entire staff was amazing. The team at Hamanasi is exceptional. Despite the hard work, in hot humid weather, nothing stops them from being helpful and friendly.

Keep doing what you are doing – your service is wonderful! Love the personal service and attention to detail. Everything is well organized.

Keep doing everything that you are doing! We have travelled to 30+ countries and this is by far the best hospitality!

Completely stellar from Check in to check out!

Everything was beyond our expectations and enjoyed every minute! Thank you so much for your fantastic effort!

We have never met anyone here that wasn’t super friendly and accommodating. Have traveled a lot to many places and you are still our very favorite.

Hamanasi staff have set the bar for world class service standards while maintaining an intimate communication and style – please keep that strong combination.

This is one of the most wonderful places I have ever stayed. I honestly cannot think of anything to suggest. Many resorts claim to be Eco-friendly but most do a poor job at it. You really live it and it is very refreshing. Excellent effort. Thank you for a wonderful and memorable week.

Doing a wonderful job, we love Hamanasi and the staff. Made us feel like part of the Hamanasi family.

Preserving Paradise

We believe that thoughtful eco-tourism can make a positive impact on the environment and in our community, and preserve our little slice of paradise for the enjoyment and education of future generations.

Responsible Eco-Tourism

Our sustainability, hamanasi’s green team.
