Train Travel Is Booming: A First Timer's Guide

morning travel train

It's often said that it's not the destination, it's the journey that matters, and perhaps there's no better example of that than train travel. In an era of hyper-productivity , we often find ourselves scurrying from one must-see landmark to another, ignoring all the in-betweens. But with the rise in slow travel, taking vacations by train is starting to emerge as one of the most popular ways to see the world .

In recent years, train journeys have even become a trendy way to travel for the ultimate jet setters: celebrities. "All I want to do is live on a train," Margot Robbie told Vogue in 2023, admitting she often spends her free time browsing train sites around the world to plan her next great rail journey. "You literally wake up and you open the window and it looks like 'The Sound of Music.'"

Robbie has already taken the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and British Pullman , both part of the luxurious Belmond Trains, as well as the Seven Stars , which goes across the Japanese island of Kyushu. And she's not the only one: Victoria and David Beckham took a family trip on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express the summer of 2022, and Maria Sharapova shared views from her stunning 2021 ride on the Royal Scotsman, also a Belmond Train.

"When you travel by train, your vacation gets off to a magical and immediate start that you can't get by air or road," Trainline travel expert Hollie Conway tells PS. "Not only do you set off in one city and arrive somewhere magical with no effort, you get to experience the beauty of the surroundings along the way uninterrupted."

Conway also finds it to be far more reliable, especially in Europe, and far more sustainable, as trains produce up to 75 percent less carbon emissions than by car or plane, per findings published in %0Ahttps://www.travelweekly.com/Strategic-Content/Austria-travel-by-train" target="_blank">Travel Weekly .

With train travel, there are all sorts of price points and ways to turn the journey into the experience. Here's what to know before planning your first great rail vacation.

What's a Good Train Trip For a First-Timer?

With so many itineraries out there, the choices can be overwhelming, but it's best to go with your instincts. Fora advisor Thomas Spears says the Belmond's Royal Scotsman or Golden Eagle are both solid introductions to train travel, since they entail a "short journey through fantastic scenery, with a local-inspired luxury." Spears likens it to staying in a "five-star hotel that changes cities each morning when you wake up."

Nature lovers may also enjoy Rocky Mountaineer , Spears recommends, which journeys through "some of the most beautiful and untouched nature." The rail booking company Vacations By Rail says that train is one of its most popular, best known for its trips between Vancouver and the Canadian Rockies, though they also have one between Denver and Moab. "It is a luxury train experience with glass-domed ceilings in the train cars, so it is easy to soak in all of the views on the leisurely, daylight-only route," a rep for the company says.

If you're looking to tiptoe into overnight trail travel — on a budget — Fora advisor Chloe Kletsa points to the Madrid to Lisbon trip. "It is just one overnight so you can test the waters and see if a longer journey would suit you," she says, suggesting a single or double occupancy cabin. "When sleeping on a train for the first time, it takes a bit of getting used to, lying down feels different to sitting on a seat. You may not sleep that well that first night as you get used to the movement and the noise."

But if budget is not an issue, Kletsa recommends going for the gold standard on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express route from London to Venice, which she calls "a must" since it's also a "short one-night journey which gives you a taste of what a true luxury train experience can be."

What Are Some Other Popular Train Trips?

When we asked experts to name some of their other favorite and trending train journeys, the list hopscotched around the world. Dan Reisig of Railbookers says one of his favorites is through Rome, Florence and Cinque Terre , saying it's "an unbelievable combination of history and natural beauty."

Conway is also a fan of Italy, but from Rome to the Amalfi Coast via Naples . "The landscape is very special, and you even have the ability to hop off the train to visit the archaeological site of Pompeii and walk up Vesuvius on the way," she says.

Kletsa has her eyes set on the Belmond Andean Explorer , saying "I believe the landscapes you ride past, plus the level of luxury and comfort that these trains provide, will make it a true once-in-a-lifetime experience." But she says the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express connecting Paris and Istanbul is a popular pick, as is the new Paris to Portofino launch.

Also fun: the Nordland Railway between Trondheim and Bodo , which Kletsa calls a "gorgeous, scenic 10-hour ride that resembles the Polar Express during the winter months, and in the summer the sun never sets so one can enjoy a full 10 hours of sightseeing from their seats."

Spears adds that Eastern & Oriental Express in Southeast Asia "seems to be gaining in popularity" while countries like Laos and Vietnam are starting their "mid-tier luxury trains." He's also seen an "uptick" in requests about the Maharajas' Express in India.

What's It Like on Board a Train?

Like cruises, hotels, and planes, there are varying accommodation levels for every kind of traveler.

"Your first long-haul trip will not disappoint."

"Trust me when I say, your first long-haul trip will not disappoint," Conway says. For European trips, there's a good deal of comfort and hospitality, from easy check-in to the dedicated space for relaxation, and even the food and drinks, which Conway says is "100 percent better than airline food." But above all, she says it's the scenic views along the way that make every step of the journey an experience.

For those traveling in an overnight sleeper train, the cabins can range from shared rooms with bunk-like beds to spacious suites similar to hotel rooms. Across the board, expect everything to be smaller and "leverage clever design to provide the same functions and amenities," Spears says. He also points out that some cabins will be converted between day and night to accommodate sitting-up and then laying down for bed.

The main difference compared to air travel is that you're not confined to your seat. "You can get up, walk around, get something to eat or drink (or bring your own!), and the train journey will become one of the most memorable parts of your entire vacation," Reisig says.

Spears compares it to a cruise ship, with many of the more high-end journeys having activities on board and stops with excursions. But he notes that dining options can be limited — after all, train kitchens are naturally smaller than those on a ship — so plan ahead, especially if you have dietary restrictions. "There's nothing worse than boarding a seven-day train trip and finding that you don't like or can't eat the meals," he says.

What Are Train Travel Prices Like?

In general, train travel is "very competitively priced and oftentimes can cost the same or less than air," Reisig says.

Kletsa adds that trips like those on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express are "comparable to a transatlantic business ticket for one night, or first class for longer journeys." The one-night trip from London to Venice on that Belmond train starts at around $4,941, while a one-nighter on the Rocky Mountaineer starts at $1,720, as of press time. Budget options are also available, which will help shave costs off of hotels and air.

Booking ahead can sometimes make a difference, like the Eurostar can be expensive if not booked well ahead of time. For instance a last-minute fare between London and Paris is now $290 but can start as low as $52. European sleeper trains generally have the same pricing, no matter when you book.

"For luxury trails, the initial ticket price might seem slightly higher, but the experience is one you'll never forget, especially for those who take a dream vacation," Conway says. "Budget trains often hit popular destinations and major cities, making them a convenient choice for those seeking cost-effective travel."

What Are Some Mistakes First-Time Train Travelers Make?

While trains don't have the same tight space restrictions as planes, the Vacations by Rail team still advises first-timers to not overpack . "Each train is different, but some have limited space for luggage so avoid packing any non-essential items," the company's spokesperson says. Also, make sure you can handle your own suitcases on and off the train, unless you've booked an escorted trip with baggage handling.

Cultural cues may also be different depending on where you're going. For example, in some European countries, passengers don't usually talk on their phones on board. Conway adds, "People love taking their pets on the train so don't be surprised if you spot a dog, cat or even a bird."

But most of all, use the time intentionally. Vacations By Rail suggests studying up on your next destination, journaling about the last one, or even just napping: "After all, what better way to prepare for the thrills to come than being well-rested?"

How Do I Book a Train Trip?

The booking process will be different depending on the train operators and specifics of the journey. If your trip involves segments on a local train, it can be challenging to navigate booking sites in other languages. But trains do sell out, so it's important to book early.

First timers may benefit from using a company like Trainline , a platform that helps you search, compare, and buy tickets all across Europe; Vacations By Rail , which offers rail vacation packages worldwide; or Railbookers , an independent train vacation booking company that customizes everything to your needs and budgets.

"Travelers who want to experience the best that trains have to offer on a vacation but insist on doing all of the planning themselves often regret it," Reisig says. "Every train system has its own set of booking rules, on-sale dates, and oftentimes even languages. It quickly can become overwhelming — especially if something changes or goes wrong."

Turning to experts can alleviate the concern over details getting lost in translation, and Railbookers says its consultants can help you figure out everything from the best itineraries for your needs to the most strategic seats in the train for the views, as well as what to do in every destination. And if there are snags, they're just a call away.

Who Should Go on a Train Trip?

Train trips are a great choice for a wide range of travelers.

Kletsa says that for solo travelers, it's a way to experience multiple destinations on a trip. "You will have the chance to meet other passengers, make connections, and build friendships — and who knows, maybe even romance can be in the air," she says. "We've all watched 'Before Sunrise' after all!"

Another group that's starting to hop on board? "I'm seeing more and more millennials asking about train travel as an alternative to cruising," Spears says. "It's more eco-friendly, often has more premium stops, and can provide a similar 'moving hotel' experience."

But rail journeys truly can be one of the most enchanting ways to experience the world. "Train travel is the perfect way to experience any destination . . . because it allows you to immerse yourself in your surroundings and fully appreciate the destination," Reisig says. "Whether it's the comfort of a sleeper car on an overnight train, to enjoying the cuisine and camaraderie in the dining car, train travel has something for everyone."

Train Essentials: 25 Things to Pack for a Long Rail Journey

Preparing for an overnight train or a long day overlanding by rail? These 25 train essentials will ensure you have a comfortable, safe and enjoyable journey.

Trains are my favourite way to travel – bar none.

And I might be in the minority here, but I love long, drawn-out rail journeys the best.

I’ve done an 18-hour trip by rusty train through corn fields in Northern Myanmar, and rode the Amtrak from Austin to New Orleans. I’ve taken the Reunification Express from Hanoi to Saigon, the Marrakesh Express from Tangier, and the scenic route across Austria from Vienna to Ljubljana .

I’ve been in a train on a ferry to cross from mainland Italy to Sicily , and I was there for the grand re-opening of Cambodia’s Royal Railways from Phnom Penh to Kampot .

Some of my favourite rail journeys of all time are in the Caucasus, particularly the overnight trains between Tbilisi and Yerevan (Armenia) and Tbilisi and Baku (Azerbaijan).

All this to say that I’ve done my fair share of train travel and picked up a lot of handy tips along the way. This list of 25 train essentials includes all the things I pack for a comfortable and safe train journey .

Don’t forget to check out my travel resources page for a list of websites and services I use to book train tickets around the world.

What to pack for a long rail journey: 25 train essentials

1. travel documents.

You’re not going to get very far without the correct travel documents.

If you pre-purchased your train tickets online or through an agent, make sure the document you’re holding is a valid ticket for boarding and not an e-voucher that you have to exchange at the station (I got caught out with this once in Budapest !).

If you’re travelling across an international border, make sure you have your visas and identification in order. Keep your documents somewhere handy – you never know when a ticket inspector might appear.

2. A small bag for valuables

Separate to my main luggage and carry on, I always travel with a third ‘small bag’ that I keep on me at all times. It’s big enough to hold my passport, my phone, my wallet, and one of my external hard drives – i.e. my most precious possessions.

A small bag is particularly handy on a train, when you might want to walk to the dining cart or the bathroom without lugging your backpack around.

Some people might use a money belt or a fanny pack, but I personally prefer a simple sling bag like this one (as a bonus, it’s also anti-theft).

3. Luggage locks

If you’re on a long train trip, chances are you’re going to be in and out of your carriage or seat throughout the journey.

It’s just not practical to carry all your luggage all the time, so I recommend investing in some good-quality luggage locks to keep your gear safe.

I like these these locks because they have a long, flexible mechanism that I can loop through multiple zippers.

Food & drink items

4. insulated water bottle.

A good-quality refillable water bottle is absolutely essential these days. All the better if it’s insulated and will keep your drinking water chilled throughout the journey.

I personally use a S’Well water bottle when I travel and at home. After I left my 17oz version at the airport in Bangkok (devastating!), I upgraded to the 25oz volume, which I actually prefer. The insulation is top-notch, and the exterior coating prevents it from sweating in warm weather.

Not all trains have potable water fountains, so that’s something you need to check in advance. In the absence of a refill station, you’ll need to bring enough water to last you the journey (or else buy bottled water on the train).

If there’s one thing I’ve learned after all my years of train travel, it’s not to skimp on the snacks. Even if your train has a dining cart and you’re able to eat a hot meal, I still recommend bringing plenty of healthy things to nibble on throughout the journey.

To keep things fresh and tidy, you’re going to want to pack a few sealer clips and reusable silicone bags . Again, these items are really helpful for cutting down on single-use plastics and food waste.

6. Something to share

One of the quickest ways to make friends on a long train journey (aside from #21, which we’ll get to soon) is by bringing a few food items you can easily share around.

It’s quite typical for people to share food on trains in Eastern Europe and Southeast Asia, particularly with tourists. It’s nice to have something to give back in return.

While I usually recommend nuts or dried fruit, those things can be difficult to share. Biscuits or chocolates might be more appropriate in this case. In the Caucasus, it’s a great idea to bring a few pre-sliced churchkhela . A bottle of wine or brandy also works!

Train essentials for keeping organised & tidy

7. packing cubes.

If you don’t already travel with them, packing cubes for travel really come into their own on a long train journey. This is especially true on an overnighter when you need quick access to a change of clothes or your toiletries.

This is especially true on an overnighter when you need quick access to a change of clothes or your toiletries.

When you’re packing for the train, be sure to keep the things you’re going to need in the top of your bag or in your day pack. It’s never fun having to rummage around for something or turn your backpack upside down in a confined space such as a train berth.

8. Travel clothesline

A portable travel clothesline that doesn’t require pegs ( like this one ) can come in very handy on an overnight train. String it up between bunks to air out a wet face towel, or use it to jury-rig a makeshift privacy curtain if you’re on the bottom bunk.

9. Rubbish bag

Not all trains have trash bins inside the compartments. Some have tiny bins that are quick to overflow. Bring your own bag for trash – either a paper bag or a reused plastic bag – to keep your seat area or compartment tidy.

Train essentials for staying clean & fresh

10. hand sanitiser.

If you’ve ever been on an overnight train in Southeast Asia, you’ll know full well that the bathrooms often aren’t very glamorous.

These days, you can find hand soap and even paper towels on most trains – but I don’t know if that’s ever going to be enough to get the germs off. I always carry hand sanitiser on the train – and remember to keep it somewhere handy so you don’t have to rummage through your things to find it.

11. Biodegradable wet wipes

Biodegradable wet wipes are great for cleaning down train tables, cleansing sticky fingers, and for using in the place of toilet paper when none is provided (not unusual on a train).

Biodegradable wet wipes are better for the environment. These ones are multi-purpose, and these ones are created especially for bathroom use.

12. Re-hydrating face mist

One of the easiest ways to freshen up without having to set foot in the train bathroom is by using a re-hydrating face mist.

I carry this non-irritant aloe and cucumber one whenever I travel and use it all the time on train, bus and plane journeys.

Train essentials for getting a good night’s sleep

13. sleeping bag liner.

If your train journey is overnight, you’ll be given clean linens to make up your bed (this is typical throughout Southeast Asia, the Caucasus, and in Europe). However, if you’re at all fussy about the quality of your bedclothes, it can be a good idea to bring your own.

Silk sleeping bag liners are lightweight, compact, and perfect for this purpose. I’ve been on overnight trains in Vietnam where the sheets were, uh, sub-par – I just hopped into the safety of my silky bag and forgot all about those suspect mattress stains.

If the train pillow looks dodgy, you can also use it as a pillow case. For winter travel, you might prefer to use a fleece version .

14. Roll-up travel pillow

I suffer from migraines that are often triggered by sleeping in a bad position, so I always travel with my own pillow. This roll-up travel pillow has been by my side since 2013 (don’t worry, it’s machine-washable and I clean it regularly).

I swear by it – it’s so much better than a neck support pillow while still being compact and lightweight. I use mine on trains, buses, and as my regular sleeping pillow.

15. Silicone ear plugs

Even if you have a private berth, trains can be noisy at night – especially with the clunking and crunching of machinery. Reusable silicone ear plugs like these ones are absolutely essential if you’re a light sleeper and a good idea even if you’re not.

16. Weighted eye mask

One of my worst overnight train trips was from Bangkok to Butterworth in the third-class open-bunk carriage. I was on the top bunk, and they left the fluorescent ceiling lights on all night . Even with a curtain drawn around my mattress, the light still came in through the top and kept me awake.

I only wish I had thought to pack an eye mask (duh). I now travel with a weighted eye mask which does wonders for my migraines, too.

morning travel train

What to wear on the train

17. plastic slippers or thongs.

If you’re on a long train trip, you’re going to need a pair of shoes you can easily slip on to wear in common areas and to the bathroom. These lightweight slippers are machine-washable and great for travel.

Just remember to bring a bag to put them in when you’re ready to pack up – you don’t want those tainted soles touching the rest of your luggage, trust me.

18. Light cardigan or cotton scarf (summer)

Depending where you are, train air-conditioning systems can be notoriously overzealous. Night trains in particular can get very chilly very fast when the central air is left on.

Remember to pack a light cardigan or oversized scarf that you can use to keep your shoulders warm.

19. Warm socks and a comfortable sweater you can sleep in (winter)

If you’re travelling in winter, you’re obviously going to need to take proper gear on the train. In the Caucasus and Eastern Europe, trains all have central heating.

Gadgets to bring on the train

20. powerbank.

Don’t just assume that your train seat or berth is going to have easy access to power. On some trains in the Caucasus and in Vietnam, the only outlets are communal ones located in the corridors.

If you plan on using your phone throughout the train journey, you’ll certainly need to carry a powerbank .

21. Portable WIFI hotspot

Not all trains have WIFI, either – especially older locomotives. A portable WIFI hotspot is worth the investment if you need to stay connected throughout the journey.

And like I mentioned earlier, sharing a hotspot is a surefire way to make new travel buddies – it’s probably even better than sharing a bottle of wine.

22. Headphone splitter

If you’re travelling with a partner or friend and you want to pass the time by watching a movie or listening to a podcast, etc., this little device is indispensable for sharing audio.

It’s one of my travel essentials!

23. E-reader

Another travel gadget I couldn’t live without is my Kindle . I can’t read on buses or in cars because I get motion sick. Long train journeys are one of the rare times I can settle down with a book and not feel guilty that I should be working.

When it comes to books that are ideal for reading on trains, Amazing Train Journeys and Monisha Rajesh’s Around the World in 80 Trains are both apropos.

24. Reading light or headlamp

Most trains are fitted with reading lights but there’s no guarantee they will be working. A reading lamp like this one or even a headlamp is always good to have so you don’t disturb other people. It can also come in handy for making your way around the train in the dark.

Of course you could just use the torch on your phone, but that’s going to wear your battery down pretty fast.

25. Your camera

One of the best things about travelling by train is of course the scenery. A lot of people get so caught up in the logistics of the journey or finding ways to pass the time that they forget to look outside.

Make sure your camera is easily accessible so you don’t miss out on any photo opportunities. Oftentimes, trains pass through landscapes other travellers miss out on when they’re moving around by plane or car – so here’s your chance to see something truly unique.

I recently upgraded to the Olympus OM-D E-M5 . It’s super lightweight and when paired with a prime lens, perfect for snapping fast-moving scenes from train windows.

What a fantastic list of train travel essentials! Your experience with various rail journeys adds a unique perspective to the recommendations. I appreciate the emphasis on the small bag for valuables – it’s a practical approach to keep essentials within easy reach.

Great list. Thank you!

Thanks for the tip about how bringing a reading lamp can also be great for a long train ride. I’d like to find a good train tour soon because I want to take my kids somewhere nice next month. I think that will be a good thing to do after being so busy with work these past few months.

Do you know if an American with an Azerbaijan residence card can cross the Georgia/Azerbaijan border on the train?

Hi DW – I am not sure, but irregardless there are no trains between Georgia and Azerbaijan at the moment.

Thanks for the info..going on a 3 day trip on the train..very helpful.

Thank you for your valuable advice. Helps a lot

Thank you so much. I’m traveling alone with my three kids 13-9yrs on the auto train. This was very helpful. I plan on buying the sling bag you suggested

In my early 20s, I zigzagged across Europe by train. Fresh out of college and pinching pennies on a month-long backpacking trip in Italy and Switzerland, I went by overnight rail, combining the cost of a room with travel to wake up in a new country each morning. It was amazing.

Traveling long distance by train is on the rise again, as adventurers look for an eco-friendly and engaging alternative to flying. In Western Europe, night trains are seeing a post-Covid resurgence, with the new Nightjet network connecting major cities. Here in the United States, Amtrak has purchased 125 new diesel-electric locomotives, most for long-distance use. In the past several years, the company spent $580 million in station upgrades and put $28 million toward upgrading its overnight railcars’ seating, lighting, tables, and bedding, as well as reintroducing dining cars after a pandemic-forced hiatus.

Evan Carson riding with mountain landscape behind her on the Empire Builder train from Chicago to Seattle

Going by train isn’t about getting somewhere fast, or cheaply either: Amtrak and other operators in the U.S. and Canada can’t compete with the budget airlines. But train travel is more eco-friendly than flying, especially with the new diesel-electric locomotives. Trains, writes Andres Eskenazi of the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy , “pollute much less than airplanes, sometimes by as much as 73 percent, and they are more easily electrified than planes.”

You can customize a train trip with layover days in any stop along the route, to explore an interim park or town. (Arrange the stops upfront when you book.)

Traveling by train  is fun and relaxing; you can read a book, stare out the window, walk around, play cards, or see a film. Just ask Hartwell Carson, who has ridden the rails with his daughter, 13-year-old Evan, multiple times since she was eight.

“It’s everything that is great about traveling,” Carson says. “You’re forced to slow down and spend quality time with your companions. My daughter and I read books, drew pictures, and went to the dining car. There is nowhere to go, so you slowly watch the landscape change. It takes you back to a time when the journey was as important as the destination.”

We’re all about that. So here are six of the most scenic rail journeys in North America, and great things to do along the way, including in our national parks . (Note that costs given are for one-way trips.)

1. The Vermonter

The Route: Washington, D.C., to St. Albans, Vermont Duration: 611 miles, 13 hours

Amtrak Vermonter train in Wallingford, Vermont

Want variety? How about a train that travels through nine states, some of the largest cities in the country, lush farming valleys, and rugged mountains? The Vermonter connects Washington, D.C., with the villages of Vermont right up to the Canadian border, and stops in Philadelphia and New York City along the way. The trip begins among towering skyscrapers, but once you pass New York City, you hit the estuary of Long Island Sound, with its islands and tall seagrass and the occasional lighthouse. Next come the hills and vineyards of the Hudson River Valley. As you reach New England proper, the scenery cedes to a mix of quaint villages (all those steeples), dense hardwood forests, and the lush Green Mountains of Vermont. The final stop is St. Albans, near Lake Champlain and the Canadian border, but you can end your journey anywhere.

Upper Florence mountain bike trail map

The Adventure: Stop at the Waterbury-Stowe station, which is within walking distance of historic downtown Waterbury, a lovely place to stay the night. Stowe, home of the massive ski resort of the same name, is 10 miles away and reachable by bus or bike. Bring your skis in winter or your bike in summer (if a bike is under 50 pounds, with tires under 2”, you can carry it on, but check bigger bikes at $20 per rig). The Stowe Recreation Path is five miles long, connecting various trail systems and more than 50 miles of singletrack from town. Check out the nearby Cady Hill Forest , and opt for the super flowy Florence Trail .

The Fares : This isn’t an overnight route, so there are no sleeper cars. Choose coach (from $81) or go for business class (from $253), with its increased leg room and free non-alcoholic drinks. Amtrak’s Café has breakfast sandwiches, burgers, salads, and snacks. The food is tasty but pricey. Regular travelers may want to bring your own.

2. The Coast Starlight

The Route : Los Angeles to Seattle Duration : 1377 miles, 35 hours

train observation car with glass ceiling

If Amtrak has a superstar route, it’s the Coast Starlight , which runs from Los Angeles to Seattle along the western edge of the United States, hitting Portland, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara. The train runs daily in both directions, with many adventure-prime stops along the way. If you begin in L.A. and travel north, the journey starts among the rocky outcroppings and farms of the San Fernando Valley before hugging the coast with its constant breakers and tall, rocky bluffs. You sleep through Northern California, and the next day gaze out on the dense evergreen forests of the Pacific Northwest and views of the Cascade Mountain Range, including—if you wake up early enough—California’s Mount Shasta, as seen from Oregon.

The Adventure: Just north of Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo is the first stop after the train leaves L.A. (or, if you’re traveling south, the last stop before L.A.), and an ideal spot for a surf break. (Again, schedule any stops ahead of time). There’s no shortage of rental shops, but you can check your own surfboard on the Coast Starlight for just $10. Pismo Beach, 13 miles west and accessible from the station by an hourly bus, has one of the most consistent breaks on California’s Central Coast. The Pismo Beach Pier attracts the most surfers, and hosts a steady clip of contests, but there are several miles of quieter stretches to explore. Pismo’s sloping beach also means a softer wave—better for beginner surfers—than those at some other California places.

The Fares: You can get coach tickets (from $100) or private sleeper cars (from $674). It’s a one-night trip, so you could save some money by roughing it in a seat just for the night. All passengers may use the observation car, with its glass dome ceiling.

3. The Canadian

Via Rail Canada train going into sunset

The Route: Toronto to Vancouver Duration: 2,775 miles, four days, four nights

VIA Rail, Canada’s national rail service, operates a number of incredibly scenic train routes throughout the country (you can take a train to Churchill, the polar-bear capital of the world), but the Canadian is the crown jewel, sampling diverse landscapes from Toronto to Vancouver. The first two days of the trip pass through eastern Canada, known as “the Great Canadian Shield,” a sparsely populated area loaded with thousands of natural lakes and forests full of spruce and pine. East of Winnipeg, the terrain shifts to vast prairie for a day before hitting the jagged, ice-capped peaks of the Canadian Rockies and crossing the Athabasca River amid a dense fir forest. In Jasper National Park , you’ll see the blocky-topped 7,500-foot Roche Miette mountain on the horizon, as well as Mount Yellowhead, Mount Robinson, and Pyramid Falls. Make your way early to one of the glass-dome viewing cars to get a spot.

The train runs twice a week, hitting the towns of Winnipeg, Edmonton, and Jasper. The regularly scheduled stops are short (only a couple of hours at each town), but you can arrange for a multi-day itinerary through VIA Rail.

Kamloops mountain biking trails map

The Adventure: The town of Kamloops sits in the Thompson River Valley, known for its sandstone canyons, rolling hills, and a vast mountain bike system , comprised of both the largest municipal bike park in North America (the Bike Ranch) and lift-served downhill trails at Harper Mountain, a ski and snowboard resort. The trails are fast, flowy, and technical. Start with the Bike Ranch, which has a mix of downhill trails, a massive jump park, and a few intermediate and beginner lines for good measure.

train station, Jasper, Alberta

The Fares: Prices for the full trip start at $514 for economy class, but you’ll be sleeping in a reclining seat and eating from a take-out counter. The Sleeper Plus fare (from $1,387) gets you a private cabin, access to the dining car, and community showers. Splurge for the Prestige class (from $6,261) and you get your own shower as well as a concierge, who changes your bedding and helps you with any requests during the trip.

4. The Denali Star

The Route: Anchorage to Fairbanks Duration: 356 miles, 12 hours

Denali Star train on bridge over river in Alaska with autumn foliage

Alaska Railroad operates a handful of train routes throughout the Last Frontier, but the Denali Star is the flagship, running daily during the summer (May 9 to September 19), connecting Alaska’s two biggest cities and hitting Denali National Park along the way. The scenery couldn’t get more Alaskan: the train crosses the Knik River, which forms a broad valley full of alpine meadows that stretch to the bases of glaciers and the Chugach Mountains, then picks up views of Denali above the Susitna River before dipping into the roadless backcountry, where you look out on the Alaska Range and Healy Canyon. The route stops for 30 minutes at Denali National Park and Talkeetna, but if you really want time to explore around the tallest mountain in the U.S., turn this into a multi-day trip with overnights along the way.

The Adventure: Sure, you might want to climb the 20,310-foot mountain for which Denali National Park is named, but that adventure isn’t for everyone, especially on a whim during a train trip. Instead, you can hike up 4,400-foot Sugarloaf Mountain. The Sugarloaf Mountain Trail begins behind the Grande Denali Lodge and ascends 2,700 feet in two miles to the above-tree line summit with views of Mount Fellows and Mount Dora, two peaks in the Alaska Range. You could also sign up for a Discovery Hike , a full-day adventure led by a park ranger. The location changes daily, but a Discovery Hike day is typically eight to ten hours and includes off-trail trekking.

Grande Denali Lodge, a way station for the Denali Star, Alaska

The Fare : Choose from Adventure class (from $215) and Goldstar class (from $432). If you opt for Goldstar, you ride in glass-dome cars and have access to an outdoor viewing platform. The price also includes meals in the dining car and two free cocktails per day.

5. Rocky Mountaineer: Rockies to the Red Rocks

The Route: Denver to Moab Duration: 375 miles, two days with an overnight in Glenwood Springs

Rocky Mountaineer train passing near Ruby Canyon on the Colorado River

Amtrak isn’t the only company running trains in the U.S. The Rocky Mountaineer, a luxury train service formerly used for scenic routes through the Canadian Rockies, debuted its first U.S.-based trip in 2022. The Rockies to Red Rocks connects Moab with Denver in a two-day journey along the Colorado River, passing remote, roadless canyons only visible from the train. You see the 25-mile-long Ruby Canyon, winding through towering sandstone cliffs on the Utah-Colorado border, and watch the lights flicker off the rock walls in the 6.2-mile Moffat Tunnel as the train cuts through the Continental Divide. The trip takes two days, but instead of offering sleeper cars, the Rockies to Red Rocks puts you in a two- to three-star hotel (the specific hotels change) within walking distance of the Glenwood Springs station. On board, you receive a three-course breakfast and lunch each day.

Dark Angel via Devils Garden Loop map

The Adventure: You’re staying over in Glenwood Springs, so soak in one of the town’s developed hot springs; Glenwood Hot Springs Resort has a big lap- and crowd-sized pool kept at 90-93 degrees, and a smaller pool that stays at 104 degrees (day passes start at $32). Iron Mountain Hot Springs has 16 geothermal pools of varying temperatures (passes start at $40). Further, in Moab, Arches National Park is a must. Hike to Landscape Arch, at 306 feet the longest natural arch in the country, on the 7.6-mile Devil’s Garden . This trail is a gem even among great hikes in our national parks.

De Beque Canyon on the Rockies to Red Rocks route

The Fares: Prices start at $1599 per person, and include on-board meals and your hotel room in Glenwood.

6. The Empire Builder

Route: Chicago to Seattle Duration : 2,206 miles, 48 hours

Empire Builder train near Whitefish, Montana

Think two full days on a train is too much? Not when you’re traveling through eight different states, tracing the U.S./Canadian border, and hitting Glacier National Park . The Empire Builder begins with views of Chicago’s skyline, and then crosses the Mississippi River, which is surprisingly wide (several hundred feet) even though you’re close to the headwaters. You’ll see the bright lights of Minneapolis and St. Paul, enter the Great Plains at night, and wake up in North Dakota looking out on pastures of wheat shimmering gold in the sun. Make sure to be in the glass-domed lounge car as you approach Glacier National Park, the train winding along the Flathead River with views of snowfields clinging to the steep granite peaks of the Lewis Ranges. Before the final destination of Seattle, you can detour into Spokane and head south into Oregon and the Columbia River Gorge, where you’ll get views of Mount Hood.

Grinnell Glacier Trail map

The Adventure : The climax of this trip is Glacier National Park. If you time a spring trip perfectly, you can pedal Going-to-the-Sun Road after it’s plowed but before it opens to vehicles. Whitefish Outfitters offers rental bikes and shuttles to the start of the ride (from $45). Your other best bet is to hike. Check out the 10.6-mile out and back Grinnell Glacier Trail , which passes waterfalls and backcountry lakes before delivering you to the glacier of that name, one of the few in the park you can actually walk across.

The Fares : This train has a number of options. Coach (from $160) will get you a doss in a reclining chair, while First Class fares with private rooms start at $979 and include all meals on board and access to the lounge and communal showers. For $3,405, the First Class Superliner Bedroom Suite includes a full bedroom with its own bathroom. Amtrak also offers a comprehensive, 10-day package deal ($3499 per person) with multiple days in Chicago, Glacier, and Seattle, and activities and lodging planned for you.

Onboard with all of that? Pick your route, plan your stops, and ride the rails to adventure.

I spent 60 hours on overnight Amtrak trips. I wish I had known 9 things before taking long-haul journeys.

  • I regret not knowing a few things ahead of my long-haul, overnight Amtrak rides in 2021.
  • I took trips from NYC to Miami and back that were 30 hours each but time seemed to pass more slowly.
  • I wish I knew internet service wouldn't be reliable, among other lessons I learned the hard way.

Insider Today

In October of 2021, I booked a round-trip ride between New York City and Miami on Amtrak's overnight sleeper train . In total, I spent 60 hours on the rails.

On the way to Miami, I spent 30 hours in a $500 roomette accommodation , which is a 20-square-foot enclosed private space with a fold-out table, two chairs that fold out into a bed, and an additional bed that pulls down from the ceiling.

On my way back to NYC, I spent 30 hours in the next level up, a bedroom accommodation that cost $1,000 for a private 45-square-foot room. It was double the cost of a roomette for twice as much space and also includes a private bathroom.

While I enjoyed the trip, there are some things I wish I had known about this type of travel before that would have made me more prepared for the ride.

I thought both train rides felt bumpy the whole time.

morning travel train

This is not an exaggeration. I found both trips as bumpy as a flight with turbulence where the seat-belt sign is on from start to finish. The motion sickness and terrible sleep were too much for me , and had I known this before my trip, I might have packed some medicine to prevent motion sickness .

Regardless of where I slept, I felt bumps throughout the night. But the top bunk was the shakiest to me.

morning travel train

In the roomette, I tried sleeping on both the top and bottom bunks.

I experienced bumps along the journey in both cots but found it easier to sleep on the bottom where I thought it felt a little less shaky. Next time, I'd skip the top bunk entirely.

While the bed, sheets, and blankets were comfier than I expected, I didn't think much of the provided pillows.

morning travel train

The beds on my Amtrak trains were firm and slightly cushy on top, just the way I like a bed. But when I was drifting off to sleep each night, I thought of my fluffy, dense pillows at home and wished the ones provided to me on the train were a bit softer.

Although the roomette sleeps two, it can feel cramped even for one person.

morning travel train

I am 5-f00t-3 and of average build, and I felt cramped in the roomette's 25 square feet of space. If I were taller or larger, I imagine I would feel even more cramped, especially if I had to share the room with another person. This makes the upgrade to a larger bedroom worth it, in my opinion.

My WiFi service was spotty throughout my trip, which made getting work done a little tricky.

morning travel train

I planned to spend several hours of each journey working on my laptop. Amtrak provides WiFi but I thought the train's internet connection wasn't consistent, so I had to adapt my workflow to do work that didn't require WiFi.

My cell-data service was also in and out throughout the journey.

morning travel train

The internet wasn't the only spotty service. I noticed that cell service on my phone seemed to come in and out, too. I wished I'd downloaded more movies and shows from streaming apps to keep myself occupied when my phone and internet weren't working.

I didn't realize that time would seem to pass more slowly on my 30-hour journeys.

morning travel train

I knew 30 hours would be a long ride one way, but time seemed to pass so slowly that 30 hours felt twice as long as it usually does in my regular daily life.

I was glad that I at least packed other things to keep me occupied with spotty WiFi and cell service, such as my Nintendo Switch and music.

The cup holders in Amtrak roomettes and bedrooms fit a standard 12-ounce water bottle. I didn't know mine wouldn't fit.

morning travel train

I brought a big water bottle to stay hydrated on my long journey, but it was too large to fit inside the cup holder, meant for a standard 12-ounce cup.

Had I known this, I would have packed a few smaller water bottles instead.

I think you have to view the ride itself as part of your vacation to really enjoy it.

morning travel train

I'm someone who deals with travel anxiety , and so I found the length of the trip initially overwhelming. It's tough for me to relax when I am between destinations, and for some reason, I struggled to view the train as a destination in itself.

But after taking two 30-hour rides, I've realized that if you can think of the train ride as part of the journey, I think you'll find it much more enjoyable.

The Best Time of Day to Travel by Plane, Train, or Bus, According to Experts

It all depends on your mode of transportation.

The Palmer/Getty Images

If you're looking to book any form of transportation, you might be questioning the best time of day to travel. The answer can be nuanced, depending on your specific situation. For instance, are you looking to avoid delays, or do you prefer to save money? And are you traveling by plane, train , or bus? To help you figure out the best time of day to travel , we spoke to the experts to break it all down.

The Best Time of Day to Travel by Plane

In general, morning flights are preferable to afternoon or evening options because there are usually fewer issues earlier in the day. Morning flights are less likely to be subject to delays and cancellations for several reasons. For starters, there's usually no backlog of delays ahead of a morning flight. If you take a later flight, however, any delay to your inbound aircraft — or the inbound flight before that — could delay your flight in a snowball effect that gets worse as the day goes on.

Then, there's the consideration of weather in the morning. "Weather-wise, there's not as much instability because the temperature is cooler. Thus, if there's any precipitation, it won't be severe," former pilot Dr. Dan Bubb, a professor at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, tells Travel + Leisure . And that also helps you avoid delays . Plus, if you take a morning flight, that leaves you the whole day for backup options if things were to go awry.

And finally, airfare tends to be less expensive at unpopular hours. According to online travel agency Trip.com , flight departures prior to 9 a.m. are cheaper than afternoon or evening trips.

The Best Time of Day to Travel by Train

Trains are frequently used for commuting, so it's no surprise that rush hour applies here almost as much as it does to cars. Mornings and evenings tend to be both busier and more expensive, so afternoons are your best bet.

"The best time to travel by train is in the afternoon, between 12 p.m. and 5 p.m.," Staffo Dobrev, director of communications at the travel search engine Wanderu , tells T+L. "Within that period, train fares can be up to 33 percent cheaper than the rest of the day." Not only is an afternoon train ticket less expensive, it's also easier to fit into your schedule. Dobrev explains, "On average, there tends to be more trains departing in the afternoon, providing travelers with more options and flexibility."

The Best Time of Day to Travel by Bus

There are two primary factors to consider when traveling by bus: rush hour traffic and ticket prices. If you're intent on arriving at your destination on time, avoid rush hour traffic as best you can, especially if you're departing from or arriving at a major metropolitan area.

But for ticket prices, the best deals can be found in the mornings. According to Dobrev's research, travelers can save as much as 15 percent on bus tickets for departures between the hours of 6 a.m. and 12 p.m. "That's also the period that offers the highest diversity when it comes to bus travel options," he says. "Traveling in the morning would also help avoid a fully booked bus, as the vast majority of bus travelers tend to hit the road in the afternoon."

Travel Early, Pay Less

Commuters who travel early can expect to save on their fares. PTC introduced the Morning Pre-Peak Fares which allow commuters to enjoy up to 50-cent* savings when they tap-in before 7.45am at any rail station island-wide on weekdays (except Public Holidays). This scheme was introduced since 29 December 2017 to encourage more commuters to travel before the morning peak hours.

* The discount quantum is $0.50 or the fare for the train trip of the journey, whichever is lower.

Here’s are some examples:

(1)  Commuter who taps in before 7.45am at Jurong East MRT station and taps out at Bishan MRT station:

Distance: 16.6km

(2)  Commuter who taps in before 7.45am at Jalan Besar MRT station and taps out at Chinatown MRT station:

Distance: 2.9km

(3) Commuter takes Compassvale LRT to Hougang MRT station,  boards bus service 325 at Hougang Central Bus Interchange and alights at Hougang Swimming Complex:

Distance: 3.2km (train) + 1.9km (bus) = 5.1km

(4)  Commuter boards bus service 232 at Toa Payoh Lorong 7 (opp Block 5) and alights at Toa Payoh Bus Interchange, then taps in at Toa Payoh MRT station before 7.45am and taps out at Newton MRT station:

Distance: 2.2km (bus) + 2.6km (train) = 4.8km

Merseyrail explains ticket price hike as customers fuming

Commuters were not happy to see extra costs added to their tickets this morning

  • Facebook Icon
  • Twitter Icon
  • WhatsApp Icon

Merseyrail has explained why its prices have gone up as commuters noticed an extra cost to their tickets this morning. Frustrated travellers have spoken about being hit with extra costs as they made their way to work today.

In March, regulated train fares in England rose by 4.9%, however that rise did not initially come in for the Merseyrail network. Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram announced that there would be a price freeze on the network for six months in a bid to help people with the cost of living.

That six month period is now over and the near 5% increase came into force for Merseyrail passengers on Sunday, with many who use the network first noticing the extra costs as they made their way to work this morning.

Merseyrail said that the price freeze has meant that costs were kept at 2023 prices for a large part of this year, but that ticket prices are now increasing to account for the rising cost of running a city-region metro rail service. The rail operator insists that even with these increases, Merseyrail ticket prices will remain some of the most affordable in the UK.

Greg Suligowski, Head of Customer Strategy at Merseyrail said. “The six-month price freeze on Merseyrail journeys, announced by the Liverpool City Region Mayor, came to an end on Saturday 14 September”.

“The price freeze has been in place since March and has resulted in a cheaper fare for 10 million journeys across the Liverpool City Region”.

‘”Despite the price freeze coming to an end, there are still a range of great value tickets available to customers, depending on their travel needs. More information on ticketing options can be found on the Merseyrail website”.

However, a number of Merseyrail users were unhappy to see their ticket price go up today, with several complaining that the price hike is coming in at a time when the network is continuing to suffer with disruption as a new fleet of trains is rolled out.

This disruption has included changes to services between Southport and Hunts Cross and Ormskirk and Liverpool Central as the final stage of the roll-out of the new fleet of vehicles takes place.

One passenger, who asked not to be named, said: "I have to get the train into the city centre every day for work, so I don't really have any other option but to pay the increase in fare.

"It's not even a big increase, I think it works out at an extra 15p for a return, but at the moment the Hunts Cross to Southport line isn't running as usual because of tests, and then you also have to factor in the usual cancellations and delays. I know my service isn't as bad as some of the others, the people who use the Kirkby line must be pulling their hair out every day at the amount of cancellations they have to deal with, but it does feel at the moment we're having to pay more for a lesser service."

Another customer, who travels into the city centre from Kirkby said she has experienced many delays and cancellations in recent months and is now being expected to pay more to travel.

She said: "Although I understand that businesses have costs to cover, causing these price hikes, a return ticket at £5.05 for two journeys lasting 15 minutes seems pretty unreasonable.

"In recent weeks, I've been handed Haribo, Pringles and a £5 voucher as I walk into Kirkby station, assumingly as an apology for the recent disruption. I'd just prefer some money off my commute."

Another Merseyrail user added: "I got an unwelcome surprise this morning when I was told at the ticket office my fare would be 20p more with the price increase. It's like we've almost got used to everything being put up in price with the amount food has increased since the cost of living crisis. 20p a day quickly adds up over the course of a month. We should be encouraging people to use public transport not making it more difficult."

Others took to social media to vent their frustrations at the rising prices. One X user said: "Can I ask was there an announcement/post that fares were rising?

Tim Worthington added: "Merseyrail really do have a nerve increasing fares on the Hunts Cross line when they aren't running a full service on it end are refusing to answer properly when asked straight if a full service will ever resume."
