Sea Song Sessions
‘Sea Song Sessions’ is a collection of British maritime folk songs and sea shanties, performed by a collective of some of British folk music’s leading lights: Jon Boden , Seth Lakeman , Ben Nicholls , Emily Portman & Jack Rutter .
The concept for the album came to them in 2021, when they were asked to prepare an evening of sea-related songs for the Folkestone Festival. Boden’s celebrated work with Bellowhead (of course no strangers to sea-faring songs) and Ben Nicholls’ band, Kings of The South Seas (who play exclusively maritime-influenced music), Seth Lakeman’s own extensive body of work from the South West as well as Emily Portman and Jack Rutter’s sizeable oceanic repertoires, all formed the natural foundation and inspiration for these acclaimed musicians to conceive the Sea Song Sessions.
They chose to record material from each artist’s repertoire, traditional songs and some newly written for these sessions. What you are hearing is a record that captures the story of an island nation whose political and social history is so undeniably tied to its relationship with the sea.
The album was handled by seasoned veteran Ben Hillier (Blur, Depeche Mode, Elbow) and recorded live over two days, seeking to harness the immediacy of the studio and utitizile his experience across other genres to bring a deeper complexity to the production of these songs. The performances were tracked at Agricultural Audio, Hillier’s own studio in the Sussex Downs, constructed within a giant farm building made entirely out of hay bales.
The first single from the album is ‘The Rambling Sailor’: “I first heard my Father singing this song as The Rambling Miner. This version as The Rambling Sailor is based on the 1968 version from Maddy Prior and Tim Hart and resonates with where I’m from as it mentions young Johnson stopping in Southern ports such as Plymouth.” – Seth Lakeman
“..great selection, expert arrangements and enthusiastic delivery.” Tradfolk.co
“Superb collection of maritime songs and sea shanties performed by the cream of Britain’s folk musicians.” Americana-UK (8/10)

FREEDOM FIELDS 15TH ANNIVERSARY
Seth Lakeman was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2005 for ‘Kitty Jay’. It catapulted Lakeman into the forefront of the new British folk movement and his follow up was the gold-selling ‘Freedom Fields’ which was released twice in 2006. Produced by his brother Sean Lakeman it came out on iScream and was then re-released by Relentless (EMI) where it went on to become Seth’s first of 6 UK Top 40 albums.
Tickets are on sale now: https://bit.ly/freedomfieldsonsale
To celebrate the 15 th anniversary, Seth will be playing a worldwide concert stream with his band playing the album which includes ‘ Lady of the Sea’, ‘King and Country’ and ‘ White Hare’ plus other favourites.
Seth says “ I’m really excited to be able to share the whole Freedom Fields album for its 15th anniversary! It’s a collection of songs hugely inspired by the Westcountry and it still seems to be the most popular album I’ve recorded so far. This is going to be pretty special. I hope you can tune in to watch!”
Freedom Fields helped Seth build on his traditional cult following but found him a whole new audience for his rhythmic, captivating brand of indie-folk song writing. He was named Folk Singer of the Year, and ‘ Freedom Fields’ awarded Album Of The Year at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards in 2007.
“Delicious harmonies and the occasional fiery fiddle are the order of the day, with his impressive song-writing skills shining out of every tune.” BBC Music (Freedom Fields)

Seth Lakeman takes a break from the Robert Plant musical juggernaut in Autumn 2018 to release his ninth studio album ‘The Well Worn Path’ on 26 October before heading out on tour in November with a new band line-up.
Seth found time at the beginning of the year, in between charging around the globe with Robert and his band, the Sensational Space Shifters, to record his new studio album The Well Worn Path. It’s a return to a no-nonsense, organic, classic folk-rock approach with hints of Fairport Convention, Neil Young, Nick Cave and Billy Bragg – plus Lakeman’s trademark foot-stomping, fiddle bow-shredding and soaring vocals. Seth brought in top producer Ben Hillier and along with long-time collaborator Ben Nicholls on upright and electric bass he was joined by new boys Kit Hawes on electric and acoustic guitar and drummer Evan Jenkins. One of the finest female folk voices Kathryn Roberts also contributes sublime backing vocals to the album.

Topic Records announces Sea Song Sessions
Sea-bound folkies announce a collaborative album with a nautical theme, Sea Song Sessions, and plan to tour by tallship.
Fresh from announcing the new Angeline Morrison album, Topic Records have once again cranked up the publicity machine to bring us news of a new collaboration featuring five luminaries of folk. Dropping anchor on September 30th, Sea Song Sessions is a 13-track album put together by former Blur producer, Ben Hillier, collating the nautical repertoires of Jon Boden , Seth Lakeman , Ben Nicholls , Emily Portman and Jack Rutter .
The idea for the album came from a collaboration between the five musicians commissioned by Folkestone Festival . Enjoying the way things worked out, the freshly-minted band came together in a studio with Hillier for a scant two days, recording everything quickly in the hope of maintaining a spontaneous sense of energy. Each musician brought sea songs that they knew well, many of which were traditional shanties and broadsides, some of which were originals or relatively modern songs that they had developed an affinity with throughout their careers.
The first single from the album is ‘The Rambling Sailor’ [ Roud 518 ], a song that has been collected (true to its title) in the UK, the USA and Australia. 292 references to the song exist in the VWML archives , and the rambler’s profession seems to change depending on where it was collected. “I first heard my Father singing this song as ‘The Rambling Miner'”, explains the singer, Seth Lakeman. “This version as ‘The Rambling Sailor’ is based on the 1968 version from Maddy Prior and Tim Hart and resonates with where I’m from as it mentions young Johnson stopping in Southern ports such as Plymouth.”
Non-traditional songs include ‘Salvation Army Band Girl’ (Jon Boden), ‘The Good Ship Anny’ (Seth Lakeman) and the modern Lal Waterson/Oliver Knight classic, ‘Some Old Salty’, which Emily Portman has been known to sing as part of the extended Waterson Family concerts.
Sea Song Sessions will be supported by a handful of onboard and harbourside performances in Looe Harbour (September 27th), Charlestown Harbour (September 28th) and Falmouth Maritime Museum (September 30th). And just for good measure, they’ll be sailing between each gig on the Tallship Anny of Charlestown (yes, you read that correctly).
Introducing the Tradfolk Takeover at FolkEast
The album, which continues the Topic Records tradition of legendary sea-fairing albums, is available for pre-order via this link .

Video Premiere: Sea Song Sessions – The Dreadnought
Last month, we shared exciting news from Topic Records of the release of ‘ Sea Song Sessions ’, a collection of British maritime folk songs and sea shanties, performed by a collective of some of British folk music’s leading lights: Jon Boden, Seth Lakeman, Ben Nicholls, Emily Portman & Jack Rutter.
In that earlier announcement, we shared their first single ‘The Rambling Sailor’ and today, we have the pleasure of premiering their video for ‘The Dreadnought (Bound Away)’ which was filmed by Adam Clitheroe.
On the track: “ Jack found this song in The Oxford Book of Sea Songs and added his own music and chorus. It’s one of those songs that has crossed the seas with lyrics adapted to many different ships and nations as it travelled…it’s full of the excitement of large sailing ships, larger oceans and the prospect of new beginnings.”
Don’t miss the opportunity to hear songs from the ‘Sea Song Sessions’ at three, one-off harbourside and onboard performances as they sail by Tallship ’Anny of Charlestown’ from performance to performance along the Cornish coastline this month. More information is below.
The concept for the album came to them in 2021, when they were asked to prepare an evening of sea-related songs for the Folkestone Festival. 8 Travel Duffle Bags to Swap with Your Suitcase
From sporty to luxe, 8 options that are worth it.
Every item on this page was chosen by a Town & Country editor. We may earn commission on some of the items you choose to buy.
I keep thinking of Hallie Parker in The Parent Trap digging her bright yellow duffle out of a pile minutes upon arrival at summer camp. If Ms. Parker brought only a duffle with her the entire summer, surely a duffle can suffice weekend trips, staycations, and even a quick bicoastal business meeting. Right? I decided to put my questions to the test and find the most suitable suitcase swaps. I not only tapped Luigi Auricchio VP of Design from Away, but I polled my friends and coworkers and tried duffle after duffle for myself.
Coming from a design perspective, Auricchio provided me with a clearer direction of what I was on the hunt for. He says, "The perfect duffle should strike the balance between function and style , offering enough space for all the essentials while being easy to carry. It’s the small details that make all the difference ." After questioning the features I should consider, Auricchio adds, "A great duffl e prioritizes padded shoulder straps, top handles that are appropriately sized for shoulder carry, well-organized compartments, ease of opening and packing, and durable, water-resistant, and lightly padded materials like a high-performance nylon, canvas, or alternative leathers . "
With this expert knowledge, I was able to source through the crowd of endless options and find chic yet practical duffles. As we sink into the second half of summer, save yourself some space with a new duffle bag. Scroll forth for the 8 best on the market!

Review: " Bought this bag at a local store because we are going on a 3-week trip and traveling with an airline that has serious weight restrictions on luggage. History of Ryazan Oblast
According to archaeological excavations, the first people settled in what is now the Ryazan region in the Upper Paleolithic (15 - 25 thousand years ago). The first known inhabitants of this area were the tribes of Finno-Ugric group: Mer, Ves, Muroma, Meshchera, Mordvinians and others, who gave a lot of preserved to this day geographical names.
The Slavic tribes moved to the east at the end of the 1st millennium AD. The tribes of Vyatichi and Radimichi settled in the upper and middle reaches of the Oka River. Over time, these lands came under the control of the Kiev principality. Further expansion of the Slavs to the east was stopped by the Kama Bulgars.
According to the latest archaeological data, the town of Staraya (Old) Ryazan was founded in the 10th century (about 50 km south-east of the present Ryazan). The town of Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky was first mentioned in 1095.
In the 13th century, the Ryazan Principality, with its core in the middle reaches of the Oka, extended south to the Voronezh and Don rivers.
Despite the vast territory of the region and mixed composition of the population, it was gradually exposed to the Christianization, a lot of churches and monasteries were built. In the 12th century, Olgovsky Assumption Monastery was founded (the present village of Lgovo) - one of the oldest monasteries in the North-Eastern Russia.
More Historical Facts…
In 1237, Staraya Ryazan, the capital of the principality, was destroyed during the Mongol invasion. After that, its place in the principality was gradually taken by Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky, which, later, inherited the name of the former capital.
The rise of the Ryazan Principality is usually associated with Prince Oleg Ivanovich (1350-1402), who, with varying degrees of success, competed with the Moscow princes. His descendants were not so successful in opposing Moscow and the Ryazan principality ceased to exist in 1521 and became part of the Moscow Principality.
In the 16th-17th centuries, the Ryazan region, being the southern boundary of the Russian state, suffered from frequent devastating raids of nomads. Ryazan guberniya (province) of the Russian Empire was established by the decree of Catherine II in 1778. The town of Pereyaslavl-Ryazansky, the administrative center of the province, received a new name - Ryazan.
In the 18th century, metallurgy (iron foundries, needle factories), textile (cloth, rope, linen factories) and leather industries appeared in the region. In the 19th century, coal mines, cement, brick, tile, match factories were opened. In the north of the province, there were several glass factories.
In the southern districts of the province, agricultural processing industry was developed. Construction of railways, along with the traditional and already well-developed river navigation, was essential for the development of the regional economy.
In 1929, almost the entire territory of the Ryazan region became part of Moscow Oblast. In 1937, a separate Ryazan Oblast was formed. During the Second World War, only the south-western districts of the region (Mikhailov, Skopin) were occupied by the German troops.
In the post-Soviet period, an outflow of population from Ryazan Oblast has begun (due to the proximity to Moscow). In 1991-2015, the population of the region decreased by more than 200 thousand people.

SEA SONG SESSIONS
With Jon Boden, Seth Lakeman, Ben Nicholls,
Emily Portman & Jack Rutter
‘Sea Song Sessions’ is a collection of British maritime folk songs and sea shanties, performed Jon Boden, Seth Lakeman, Ben Nicholls, Emily Portman & Jack Rutter.
The artists celebrated the release of the album of the same name in September 2022 with a run of on-board and harbourside performances which they sailed to and from by ship! They are now reuniting for a short run of shows inland, and in venues, to perform songs from the Sea Song Sessions and more.
They chose to record material from each artist's repertoire, traditional songs and some newly written for these sessions and the album was released on Topic Records. Folk Radio described it as “ a glorious album, showcasing some of the best of the current crop of British folk artists ”.
