In this guide, we’ll explain where to buy a SIM card for New Zealand in person and online. We’ll also discuss prepaid travel SIM cards and eSIMs if your mobile supports them.

Before you read this guide, you may wonder if you actually need a SIM card in New Zealand.

If you don’t mind not having Internet, you’ll likely find free Wifi in restaurants, shopping malls, and hotels.

That said, if you need data to get around, call a cab, or translate English – you may want to get a SIM card for your travels in New Zealand.

Best New Zealand Travel SIM Cards

If you’re traveling in New Zealand, we recommend using a SIM card from Vodafone, Spark, 2degrees, or Airalo.

That said, if you plan on visiting other countries during your trip to Oceania, you might want to pick an option offering coverage in other Oceanian countries.

Where To Buy A SIM Card In New Zealand

You can buy a New Zealand prepaid SIM card in person in some international airports, mobile provider stores, convenience stores, or online.

Usually, you can expect higher costs and low data offers at the airport, so we don’t recommend buying a SIM card at the airport.

That said, you won’t necessarily find SIM card shops in every airport, so it’s essential to keep this in mind. And, when you see a shop, you might also have limited options.

For this reason, I’d recommend buying a SIM card directly from the mobile provider store. Note that you may need your passport to buy one.

Although, this means you won’t get data right upon your arrival. So, if you prefer to be connected at all times, you could use an eSIM or purchase an Oceanian prepaid SIM card online.

Now, let’s take a look at the data plans offered by Vodafone, Spark, and 2degrees.

Vodafone SIM Cards

Vodafone offers three different types of tourist plans:

2 GB, valid for 30 days for NZD 29 ($16.86)
10 GB, valid for 60 days for NZD 49 ($28.49)
40 GB, valid for 60 days for NZD 69 ($40.12)

Spark SIM Cards

Spark has four different prepaid plans available:

2 GB, valid for 90 days for NZD 29 ($16.86)

Overall, we think Vodafone is the best option if you plan to buy your SIM card in person.

That said, any would do if you can’t find their store!

How To Buy A New Zealand Prepaid SIM Card Online

If you wish to have your SIM card ready for your arrival, you could purchase it online or on websites like Amazon.

You’ll find different SIM cards for New Zealand on Amazon. For example, the OneSimCard works in more than 200+ countries and gives you data for $0.01 per MB. New Zealand is included.

But there are many other options worth considering, so look and make sure the countries you plan to visit are listed.

New Zealand Travel Guide - Everything you need to know...

Like most of us these days we don’t leave home without our mobile phone, laptop or tablet, because we want to stay connected to family, friends, work and news from home. With so much exquisite scenery and great experiences to be had in New Zealand, you’ll not only want to be recording it all, but you’ll also be wanting to share the photos. So you are going to need access to lots of data.

So here are few tips to help you get set up. It’s so easy.

Invest in a local SIM card

International roaming with your home provider will not be cheap. It never is when you go abroad. So it’s best to purchase a local SIM card from one of New Zealand’s four main providers; Spark, Vodafone, Skinny and 2 Degrees. They have all sorts of plans with varying combos of data, calling minutes and text - all designed specifically for tourists. So purchase a mobile pack to suits your needs for the duration of you New Zealand holiday.

Mobile packs can be purchased at international airports or from stores across New Zealand’s cities and most reasonably sized towns. Remember to take your mobile device(s) into the retail store when purchasing.

One of the beauties of New Zealand is the outdoors, but coverage is not always available in some of the remote parts of country, so if you are exploring the wilderness, tell friends and family when you will be out of coverage.

Are you are looking to use more than one device? If you are looking to use a combination of devices to connect to the internet, it is most cost effective to set up your phone as a wireless hotspot.

WiFi is available in most hotels, cafes, restaurants and a number of local authorities including all of New Zealand’s public libraries and i-SITE Visitors Information Centres. If you are not sure ask, as it is not always advertised.

The speed of the WiFi is also variable ranging from good, particularly in the cities where there is fibre, to less reliable and slower in some of the more remote or rural areas of the country where the technology is older.

So if you are looking for flexibility and speed the cellular data networks provide a better, faster service, so you can stay connected and get all those great photos home to your loved ones.

Consider a calling card

If your mobile phone is locked to a network back home or you don't wish to purchase a local SIM card, you can get a calling card for use within New Zealand's public phone network. Calling cards can be used to ring international countries for a specified amount of time and are generally very cost effective.

Note: Most public phones in New Zealand don’t take cash. A credit card or calling card is generally necessary if you are wanting to make a call from a public phone.

How to Pack for New Zealand: My Detailed Packing List

There is perhaps no country in the world that I know better than New Zealand.

Back in 2011, when I decided to quit my job to travel the world, I knew I’d eventually get to New Zealand: it was a country that was high on my travel wish list, and as someone in their twenties, I planned take advantage of their working holiday visa. I thought I’d travel around Southeast Asia until my money ran out, then head south to work and live at the bottom of the world.

I certainly didn’t expect to fall in love with a New Zealander when I was just four months into my adventure!

But that’s exactly what happened and I now find myself with permanent residency for one of my favourite countries in the world. I’ve been fortunate to have visited New Zealand practically every single year over the past decade, and I’ve even spent seven months road tripping from the very top of the North Island to the bottom of Stewart Island.

In short, I’ve seen a hell of a lot of New Zealand over the past ten years.

I’ve visited over sixty different spots across the Land of the Long White Cloud , tackled three of the Great Walks so far, and every time I return, I fall more in love with this spectacular country. I’ve also learned a hell of a lot about how to pack.

Today, I want to share that knowledge with you guys. I want you to be able to make the most of your trip in New Zealand, and your packing decisions can make or break a trip.

Trust me: I know. There was that time when I ended up frozen and soaked because I believed I didn’t need wet-weather gear on a hike in the middle of New Zealand’s summer. Oh, and that time I tried to undertake a short hike in flip-flops and ended up with a sprained ankle. There was also that hike where I forgot to bring insect repellent and was devoured by the country’s infamous sand flies.

Let me make the mistakes so you don’t have to — it’s basically the slogan of my travel blog at this point.

My Luggage Recommendations for New Zealand

When it comes to travel in New Zealand, the amount you’ll bring with you will depend a hell of a lot on the time of year you’ll be visiting as well as the activities you’ll be doing while you’re there.

Travelling outside of summer? You’ll want to bring a lot of warm clothes and wet weather gear. Visiting in summer? Yeah, you’ll probably want to bring just as many. It doesn’t have the name The Land of the Long White Cloud for nothing — even in the height of summer, you’ll most likely be chilly more days than not.

Planning on doing a lot of hiking? You’ll want to make sure you have proper hiking shoes, a decent backpack, and clothes for every weather condition.

Yes, in case you haven’t realised, the weather in New Zealand can be more than a little variable, and it’s one of those countries where you can experience all four seasons in a single afternoon.

In general, the west coast is wetter than the east coast, the North Island is warmer than the South Island, and inland parts of the country experience more extreme weather than the coast. In the Central Otago region, for example, located inland on the South Island, temperatures can soar to 40°C in summer and plummet to -6°C in winter.

I’m a huge fan of travelling with a carry-on-sized backpack, as I appreciate the lack of back pain, the added ease of moving through the crowds, and not having to worry about lost luggage. For New Zealand, though, there’s no real reason to really battle to keep the size of your luggage down. The streets are paved, so don’t pose a problem for suitcases, and because public transportation isn’t amazing, most people opt to travel by car, campervan, or backpacker bus.

I travel with the Osprey Farpoint 40l backpack and take it on all of my adventures, whether I’m spending two weeks in Japan or six months in the South Pacific . It’s super-comfortable to wear, easy to pack, and has plenty of compartments to help keep your belongings organised. Osprey also offers a lifetime guarantee for all of their backpacks, which makes opting for one a no-brainer — if it breaks or falls apart, you can just get a new one!

If you’re not a fan of backpacks, I recommend the Osprey Sojourn , which is a combined backpack and suitcase in one. You’ll be able to comfortably wheel your suitcase around the country, then wear it as a backpack when you come across a series of steps or a steep hill.

What about a day pack?

You’re not going to want to take your main backpack/suitcase out with you while you’re exploring the streets of Wellington or the glowworms of Waitomo, so that’s why I recommend bringing a daypack with you on your trip.

Enter this teeny-tiny backpack that packs up to the size of an apple.

Despite its tiny size, this daypack is still surprisingly strong, holding a two-litre bottle of water, two SLR cameras, two phones, and a guidebook when I was exploring all over Oceania last year. And it doesn’t look cheap and crinkly, either, as so many packable bags often do. I take this bad boy on every single one of my trips — I’ve had it for over four years now — and appreciate that it doesn’t take up much space or weight in my luggage.

And hiking packs?

I’m a huge fan of the Osprey Tempest 20l backpack for day hikes and multi-day treks. It’s lightweight, has a great hip belt, and easily fits enough water, sunscreen, clothing, and snacks for a long walk.

No, you own too many Osprey Backpacks. What can I say? I’m an Osprey fangirl for life.

Clothing for New Zealand

When it comes to spending time in New Zealand, you’ll probably be aiming to split an equal amount of time between the mountains and the sea. While it can be tempting to spend your entire trip in typical backpacker gear, you won’t want to forget warm options for mornings and evenings when the temperature drops, and if you get sunburnt, you’ll definitely want something to cover up with. If you’re planning on hiking around the country, you’ll want to bring plenty of hiking gear, too.

What to wear in New Zealand in summer

Summer in New Zealand (December – February) isn’t as hot as you might expect, with maximum temperatures ranging between 20 and 30 degrees across the country. I recently spent from November to April road-tripping around New Zealand, and I ended up wearing jeans and a sweatshirt more often that not. As always with New Zealand, prepare for bad weather and hope to be pleasantly surprised. Here’s what I recommend wearing during summer:

Two strap tops: New Zealand can get hot, so you’re going to want to wear lightweight, thin tops to stay as cool as possible. I pack a couple of spaghetti strap tops for those days where I can’t bear the thought of wearing anything larger.
Three tank tops: For much the same reasons as why I bring strap tops, I pack a handful of tank tops to give me some variety with my clothes.
Three t-shirts: T-shirts are also good for cloudy days or if you feel uncomfortable showing any more skin.
One dressy top: New Zealand is more about dressing casual than fancy, so don’t expect to be dressing up every evening. Bring one nice top for your evenings out.
Three dresses: I like to spend most of my time in dresses to stay cool. Three is the right amount for me.
One kaftan: I like the selection they have on Free People . This is good for covering up and protecting yourself from the sun on beach days.
Two bikinis: If you plan on hitting up the New Zealand beaches, you’ll want to bring some swimwear with you!
One pair of denim shorts and a pair of bike shorts: I give myself two options, bringing some denim shorts and a pair of longer bike shorts. I usually use the latter for hiking in.
A poncho/rain jacket: The rain in New Zealand can be a pain, especially on the west coast of the South Island so I usually pack a thin, breathable rain jacket for any unexpected showers.
One outfit to keep you warm: Lows in the summer months are usually around 10-15 degrees, so you’ll want to have a warm outfit for any chilly nights. I usually bring a pair of jeans and fleece for any late-night wandering.
Hiking pants: If you plan on doing some hiking (and you really should), bring a pair of leggings or hiking pants for any colder hikes you might be doing at altitude. I usually pack some yoga pants for hiking in New Zealand.
Enough underwear for the length of the trip : For me, this is two bras, five pairs of socks, and seven pairs of underwear. If I’m travelling for longer than a week, I’ll either pay to get laundry done or use my travel laundry bar and stain remover to wash my clothes in the sink.

New Zealand is all about the hiking, so shoes with fantastic grip are a must. I’m a big fan of multi-tasking when it comes to shoes, so I’d recommend limiting the amount you bring to three.

Flip-flops: I travel with these tropical-themed Havianas and love how comfortable they are. I use flip-flops on beach days and short wanders through the local towns in the evenings.
Hiking shoes: I’m absolutely in love with my Merrell Accentor hiking shoes and think they’re the best I’ve ever owned. I’ve used these shoes to hike the 120 mile South Downs Way in the U.K. and plan on taking them on the Camino de Santiago with me later this month. My big tip for hiking in New Zealand is to buy shoes that are a size larger than you normally wear. Your feet will expand as you spend all day on them, so that extra room will prevent blisters from forming. They feel weird at the start of the day, but will be so comfortable at the end!
Something for evening meals: I really like taking tennis shoes, like these low-top Converse sneakers in pastel shades to wear for dressing up, especially as they’ll give me a little more grip on the streets than strappy sandals. If you plan on hitting up high-end restaurants and dressing up while you’re in New Zealand, take something you know you’ll be happy wearing. You know your style better than I do!

Accessories

Sunglasses: This is fairly self-explanatory! If you’re planning a summer trip to New Zealand, you can expect to need sunglasses while you’re out exploring.

Quick-dry travel towel: I absolutely adore mine! My Sea to Summit towel in extra large has been the perfect travel companion for the past eight years. It’s the size of a satsuma, weighs next to nothing, dries within minutes, and lasts for years.

Medications to Pack for New Zealand

In general, I don’t recommend travelling with a hefty first aid kit unless you’re planning on venturing well and truly off the beaten track. You’ll be able to get all of the same medicines as you can back home while you’re in New Zealand, so don’t worry about bringing absolutely everything with you for every eventuality.

Still, there are certain medicines that it’s useful to have on hand at all times. Here’s what I keep in my limited first aid kit:

Dramamine : I suffer from motion sickness, so always make sure to have some motion-sickness tablets on hand, especially if I’m going to be venturing out on the water. I struggled when taking the ferry between Wellington and Picton before, as well as dolphin-spotting at Marlborough Sound. I was fine at both Milford and Doubtful Sound.
Painkillers : There’s nothing worse than having to venture out in the hot sun in search of a pharmacy when you’re dealing with an agonising headache. That’s why I always travel with a dozen painkillers when I travel, usually half a dozen acetaminophen tablets and half a dozen ibuprofen .
Imodium : Unfortunately, travel isn’t always incredible for our stomachs, and travellers’ diarrhoea can sometimes threaten to ruin your vacation, even in a country like New Zealand. I always keep Imodium on hand for any times when the local food doesn’t agree with me. It’s been a life-saver on days when I’ve needed to get on a bus and wouldn’t have otherwise been able to leave the bathroom. I also recommend packing some DripDrop rehydration sachets in case you get felled by food poisoning or sun stroke.
Anti-histamines : I’m a very reactive person, so anti-histamines are a must for me! I always bring half a dozen tablets with me in case I break out in hives or start sneezing all over the country.
Insect repellent : New Zealand has a ton of sand flies and they can be vicious with foreigners. My kiwi boyfriend doesn’t react to their bites, but I break out in huge itching welts whenever I’m struck by them. DEET helps repel them, so I always back a small bottle of insect repellent with as high a percentage of DEET as I can find.
Band-aids : You don’t want to get an infection while travelling in New Zealand, so you’ll want to bring a couple of bandaids and a small tube of antiseptic cream for any cuts or grazes you may get. The last thing you want is for a cut or blister to get infected while travelling.

Essential Travel Technology for New Zealand

Let’s be honest: no technology is truly essential when it comes to travel, but whether we like it or not, it sure does help make our trips easier.

A smartphone: I travel with an iPhone XS, but there’s no real need to upgrade your phone for your trip to New Zealand — just take whatever you normally use at home. Ensure your phone is unlocked and pick up a local SIM card once you arrive — I usually buy one from Spark.
A camera: My main camera these days is the Sony A7ii with a 28-70mm lens , along with a couple of 32 GB SanDisk SD cards . At $2,000 for the full set-up, this is pricey as hell, and I bought it as an investment in this site. I’m incredibly happy with the quality of the camera and lens, though, and would highly recommend it if you have the cash and are looking to invest in a mirrorless system. If you’re not into photography, just bring whatever camera you usually use on holiday, or use your smartphone to take photos.
A GoPro: GoPros are fantastic for travel, because they’re small, lightweight, and come with an underwater casing. I used mine with the GoPro 3-Way Grip , because it’s great for taking selfies in beautiful places.
A Kindle Paperwhite : Now this is something I won’t consider travelling without. I’m a voracious reader when I travel, and a Kindle allows me to power through a travel memoir a day without adding weight to my luggage.
A laptop/tablet: Most of you won’t need to bring your laptop with you. I work online as I travel, so this is an essential for me, but if you don’t think you’ll have a use for it, save on weight and space and leave it at home.
Various chargers/adapters: Make sure you bring a travel adapter with you! I’ve tried out so many travel adapters over the years, but the one from Saunorch is easily my favourite. It looks great, works perfectly, and doesn’t fall out of power sockets, like so many others do.

Toiletries for a Trip to New Zealand

If you’re going to be travelling with carry-on luggage, you’ll need to be cautious here, as you’ll have to make sure any liquids you travel with are under 100ml. Regardless, I’m always trying to reduce my environmental impact, so plenty of these suggestions will help you, too.

Bamboo toothbrush and toothpaste : I invested in a bamboo toothbrush recently to cut down on my plastic consumption, and I’m obsessed with the offerings from B-Earthly . Their toothbrushes are biodegradable, comfortable to use, great for sensitive teeth, come with a travel case, and have a built-in tongue-cleaner. I combine mine with Crush&Brush toothpaste tablets , which come in zero-waste packaging, and biodegradable dental floss .
A razor: I usually pack one reusable razor for each trip.
Deodorant: This is a travel essential if you plan on travelling in New Zealand through the hot and sweaty summer months! I love the Organic Island solid deodorant bar . It’s plastic-free, biodegradable, and works just as well as traditional deodorants. The fact that it’s not a liquid will please all of my fellow carry-on travellers out there!
Sunscreen: You’ll get through a hell of a lot of sunscreen if you’re planning on visiting New Zealand in summer — fun fact: I managed to land myself with the worst sunburn of my life after just a couple of hours outside when first arriving! Sun protection and hydration is going to be so important. To be honest, you’ll get through so much sunscreen in New Zealand that I’d recommend picking some up after you arrive so that you can travel with a bigger bottle.
Solid shampoo and conditioner: I love LUSH’s solid shampoo bars — they leave my hair feeling soft and shiny, are super-lightweight and small, and last me over six months when using them continuously! Because they’re so small, I’d definitely recommend picking up some solid conditioner , too. The cork pots that are sold by LUSH are perfect for storing your bars as you travel.
A small bar of soap: I usually grab a bar of soap from LUSH before a trip, too. I love their products and the fact that they’re packaging-free. A bar of soap will last me for an entire trip and also means I don’t add to my liquid limit with shower gels.
Tangle Teezer: I’ve been traveling with a Tangle Teezer since I first started traveling, and it was a lifesaver in New Zealand! It’s the only hairbrush I’ve found that can get rid of all of all of the knots in my crazy, curly hair.

Miscellaneous Items for a Trip to New Zealand

A dry bag: An essential for spending time out on the water. It meant I could put my camera in my dry bag, get some air in it so it floats, and swim off to a little beach with my camera and take some great photos. The extra air helped it to float, which was useful. I’ll only use Sea to Summit products when it comes to dry bags — I’ve been using mine for seven years and it’s still going strong.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

If you’ve read any other posts on Never Ending Footsteps, you’ll know that I’m a great believer in travelling with travel insurance. I’ve seen far too many Go Fund Me campaigns from destitute backpackers that are unexpectedly stranded in a foreign country after a scooter accident/being attacked/breaking a leg with no way of getting home or paying for their healthcare. These costs can quickly land you with a six-figure bill to pay at the end of it.

And fun fact! My partner scraped up our rental car in New Zealand while parking in a narrow driveway of an Airbnb. The total cost of the damage? $1,500! We were so glad we had travel insurance then, as it covered the full cost.

In short, if you can’t afford travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel.

Travel insurance will cover you if your flight is cancelled and you need to book a new one, if your luggage gets lost and you need to replace your belongings, if you suddenly get struck down by appendicitis and have to be hospitalised, or discover a family member has died and you need to get home immediately. If you fall seriously ill, your insurance will cover the costs to fly you home to receive medical treatment.

I use SafetyWing as my travel insurance provider, and recommend them for trips to New Zealand. Firstly, they’re one of the few companies out there who will actually cover you if you contract COVID-19. On top of that, they provide worldwide coverage, don’t require you to have a return ticket, and even allow you to buy coverage after you’ve left home. If you’re on a long-term trip, you can pay monthly instead of up-front, and can cancel at any time. Finally, they’re way cheaper than the competition, and have a clear, easy-to-understand pricing structure, which is always appreciated.

What Not to Pack for a Trip to New Zealand

A money belt: There’s no travel item I despise more than a money belt, and I very much recommend leaving yours at home. Why? Because they don’t work! Thieves know what money belts are and they know to look for them. When a friend was mugged while travelling, the first thing the attacker did was lift up her shirt and check for a money belt.

So not are they uncomfortable and weird and make it look like you store your valuables in your underwear, but they don’t even protect you from being robbed.

Instead of travelling with a money belt, I recommend splitting up your money and credit cards before you travel. Keep an emergency $20 in your shoe, put some of your money in your wallet, keep a card in your daypack, and some extra cash in a pocket. You’ll be a lot safer by doing this.

High heels: New Zealand is a country that’s all about getting outdoors. Leave the heels behind and opt for some sandals with a good grip.

Too much make-up: I’m all about that beauty life, but I’ll hold my hands up here and confess that I always pack far too much make-up on my trips. For some reason, I always assume I’m going to want to put on a full face of primer, foundation, concealer, eyeliner, lashes… when the reality is that it’s often so hot in New Zealand that the last thing I want is products on my face. Instead, keep your products to a minimum: I like to pack some bronzer, mascara, a quad of neutral eyeshadows (I like the Flirt palette from Tarte), some highlighter, and lip gloss. I’ll throw a couple of vibrant nail polishes in there, too, and that’s about it for my beauty bag.

And that’s about it for my New Zealand packing list! I hope you found this guide useful and have a fantastic trip to the islands! :-)

Spark launches new international roaming offerings

Spark has refreshed its mobile roaming packs to offer better value to its customers.

Customers heading to any one of the 39 supported countries - Australia, UK, USA, China, American Samoa, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Fiji, France, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Puerto Rico, Qatar, Samoa, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Tonga, UAE, US Virgin Islands, Vanuatu, Venezuela, Vietnam, San Marino and Vatican City have the option of two different roaming packs which now feature 1GB of mobile data, an increase from the previous 500MB.

Both packs offer 1GB of data, with a data only pack costing $15, and a $20 pack offering data, 200 inbound voice minutes, 200 outbound voice minutes along with 200 TXT messages.

The packs are valid for 7 days, and can be used across multiple countries. Once expired, Spark users can simply purchase additional packs as required.

Customers who don't opt for a roaming pack will pay casual rates for data, voice and TXT messages. These rates will vary depending on the country.

"Whether it’s responding to emails, talking to their family back home over Facetime or video-conferencing a client elsewhere in the world, mobile data is the thing they need. Our new Roaming Data Packs allow them to do all those things affordably and easily whether they’re in Beijing, Sydney, Seoul or New York."

New Zealand China Trade Association (NZCTA) Chairman, Martin Thomson, welcomes Spark’s new roaming packs and he says they will only make things easier for New Zealanders doing business in China.

"Growth in trade, investment and links in general between New Zealand and China since the signing of the NZ China Free Trade Agreement has been tremendous and more and more New Zealand businesses are wanting to partake in that. Anything that can be done to make the experience for New Zealand businesspeople visiting China a little less daunting while pursuing new opportunities - like affordable access to data roaming - has got to be a good thing," said Mr Thomson.

Mr Paris says customers needn’t worry about being stung by a hefty data bill on their return home.

"Spark’s MyMobile app tracks the data, texts and calls customers are chewing through on their trip so customers can be fully across their mobile usage throughout their trip. Customers can also set up roaming data caps and alerts for when they’re close to their data limit." said Mr Paris.

Journey north along the coast to Tauranga Bay and Cape Foulwind, named by Captain Cook in 1770 when he encountered nasty weather. Check that your mobile or tablet can roam.

If you bought it from Spark then you can use it to roam overseas. If you're not sure, check with the store you bought it from, or with the mobile or tablet's manufacturer. Roaming is enabled by default on all Spark SIMs. To disable some or all roaming services, please contact the Roaming Helpdesk on +64 3 371 0866.

Roaming options

Option one: Auto Buy Roaming (not available on Prepaid packs)

Auto Buy Roaming is a way to avoid casual roaming rates for eligible countries. Once you turn it on you don't need to do anything on arrival. You can start enjoying your travels knowing that your Roaming Pack will activate when you get to your destination. If you run out of your pack allocation we'll automatically apply a new pack so you'll always stay connected. You can turn on Auto Buy Roaming via the Spark app or MySpark online.

You can enable Auto Buy Roaming in MySpark or in the Spark app.

Select the MySpark link that follows to go straight to the Mobile settings page where you can turn on Auto Buy Roaming. Sign in to MySpark

From the MySpark home page

Sign in to MySpark
Select Settings from the left menu bar under General
Select Mobile settings under Mobile
Scroll down to Roaming settings
Select Manage under Auto buy a roaming pack: Off
Move the slider for Auto buy a roaming pack so it turns blue
Select a Roaming pack
Select Save

From the Spark app

Select the Products tab.
Select the mobile number you would like to add a roaming pack to.
The details of the number will appear, scroll down to the Roaming section.
Select Enable to turn on Auto Buy Roaming.
Select your roaming pack and a review screen will appear, read and accept the terms and conditions.
Swipe the button to confirm and purchase the pack with auto buy enabled.
The pack will activate, and you'll be charged for it on your next bill. Once you arrive at an eligible destination and use your phone.
You can repeat this process to change the pack you've set to auto buy.
Please note you can only have one pack at a time with auto buy enabled

If you have Auto Buy Roaming enabled you'll get a notification that Auto Buy Roaming is activated and you're connected upon arrival. Selected Roaming Packs will be automatically bought and activated when you run out of your pack allocation, or when it expires. To check your usage and manage your options go into the Spark app.

The Roaming Pack and Roaming Data Pack are available for certain destinations. Find out if your destinations are covered, see above for eligible destinations. We also offer an Australia Daily Roaming pack for Pay Monthly customers.
If you visit these destinations and don't buy a Roaming Pack, you'll get charged for any data, texts or minutes you use at casual roaming rates
If you visit destinations not covered by the Roaming Pack or Roaming Data Pack, then casual rates for your destination will apply

An automatic casual data cap of $150 applies to your mobile number*
This cap applies for roaming data casual rates only, not Roaming Packs. It also doesn't restrict calls or texts, so you'll still receive a charge for these.
When you reach the data cap, you won't be able to use more data. We'll text you to let you know. There will be a link in the text so you can increase your cap.
You can only decrease your data cap if the data you've used is still under your current cap amount

Not sure how much data you need?

Data usage depends on what device is used and how much time is spent online. Roamers may get an idea of their potential mobile data requirements when travelling by looking at how much mobile data they use when in New Zealand.
Some devices allow you to see how much mobile data you have used in the last month, including how much data different applications have used.
Faster mobile networks will use more data than slower ones, for example a device may use more data on a 5G network compared to a 4G or 3G network, especially for things like high-definition video.
A roamer's usage may vary depending on several factors, including the model of the device, the device settings, the network being used and application settings.
A roamer's usage may change when travelling, for example, a roamer may spend more time looking at maps.
Using local WiFi networks to avoid using mobile data.
Turning off mobile data when it is not required - find out how to turn mobile and roaming data on or off in the mobile device help section. Search for your device and follow the instructions provided. Go to device help
Enabling data saving settings in applications where they are available.
Avoiding streaming videos and music.
Disabling background data services in a device or applications.
Roaming packs which have included allowances (in eligible countries) may provide more certainty for roamers, and depending on how much data the roamer uses may be more cost effective than casual data.

Turn on your device when you get to your destination. If Auto Buy Roaming is enabled, or you have bought a roaming pack it'll activate or casual rates will start.

Stay informed about your roaming usage

When you start roaming, you'll get a text with Spark roaming support details. Make sure you keep this message in case you need to call us. The Spark number is also on your Spark SIM and in the Spark app.
iPads and tablets can’t get texts, so if you'd like to get usage alerts, please set these up on a mobile using MySpark. You can also set up alerts to be sent to an email address.

Avoid extra roaming charges

These packs include allowances for data, texts and calls or data only that you can use in 60 destinations
Roaming packs activate once you arrive in an eligible destination and use roaming services. You can either buy them before you travel or when you arrive.
Texts sent while roaming are charged per 160 characters, including spaces. Even if your mobile phone allows more characters, you'll be charged for multiple text messages if you exceed this limit.

Understand usage alerts

If you have a roaming pack, we’ll text you when you use 80% and 100% of your allowance
There can be delays in billing of some roaming services. This is because the information must first reach Spark from the overseas network operator. This delay will affect the timeliness of usage alerts and usage meters.
If you're using $11.50 for 200MB casual data, we'll text you at 100MB and 200MB of usage
If you're using casual data in non-roaming pack destinations we'll text you at 2MB, 60MB and 100MB usage
Within this new contact, update the settings to turn off audible alerts

If you lose your phone

If your mobile or tablet gets lost or stolen while overseas, contact the Roaming Helpdesk on +64 3 371 0866 straight away to block your SIM.

If you don't do this immediately, you'll be responsible for all roaming charges incurred on the device until it's blocked. If you've stored passwords on your mobile or tablet you should immediately change these.

All Spark mobiles and tablets offer +code (aka plus code) dialling. This lets you make calls, while roaming, without dialling the international access code.

Enter +, then the country code (for example 64 for New Zealand, 61 for Australia) followed by the phone number without the leading zero. For example:

Not sure how to get the + symbol on your keypad? Pressing and holding the 0 (zero) key on most phones brings up the + key. On older phones it can be a long press, or many presses of the * or # keys.

Voicemail costs

You'll get a charge to listen to a voicemail while roaming. This will be at the standard roaming per-minute rate for an outgoing call from the country you're in.
Prepaid customers get a charge for voicemails left in their inbox while roaming. This occurs even if your phone is off. You'll get charged at the standard roaming per-minute rate to receive calls while roaming.

Casual rates will apply if your destination isn't listed above or if you don't buy a roaming pack
You can view the cost of roaming for each destination on the main roaming page
If you're traveling to more than one destination included in the pack you don’t need to buy multiple packs. The same pack will work in all included destinations within the 14 days.
The Roaming Pack and Roaming Data Pack lasts 14 days or until it's used up. If you'd like to use more, you can buy another pack.

Eligibility

The $30 Roaming and $25 Data Roaming Pack are available to Spark Pay Monthly mobile plan and prepaid customers for personal use in eligible destinations (eligible destinations are listed further down).

What's included?

The Roaming pack provides 2GB of data, 300 standard person-to-person calling minutes and 300 standard person-to-person SMS for a 14 day period unless used earlier.
The Roaming Data pack provides 2GB of data for a 14 day period unless used earlier.
The outgoing calling allowance is for use within eligible destinations as well as calls to any country around the world and to the voicemail connected to the mobile number with the Roaming Pack . The included SMS allowance is for sending SMS to numbers within eligible destinations as well as sending messages overseas

What's not included?

Non-person to person calls and premium numbers (1800, 1900, 0800) are excluded from the calling allowance and will be charged at casual rates specific to the country you’re in. Calls to satellite phones are charged at $17.25 per min regardless of your roaming location.
Picture messaging/MMS and non-person to person texts are excluded from text allowance and will use data from the pack, or at casual data rates if there’s no data allocation remaining.

Activation, use and expiry

Auto buy roaming packs or packs purchased prior to arrival are activated once first roaming use starts in the eligible destination. Roaming packs purchased in an eligible country are activated on first roaming use.
Roaming entitlements expire within the period specified in the pack (following first roaming use in the eligible destination), or if pack inclusions are used up prior to pack expiry.
The Roaming Pack and Data Roaming Pack are activated after first roaming use in eligible destinations and will expire 14 days after the first roaming use or full consumption of the pack inclusions.
Roaming pack allocations aren't able to be shared. The data, text and call allocations can only be used from the mobile number they're purchased for.
Your Pay Monthly mobile plan and / or prepaid pack entitlements cannot be used for roaming.
Roaming allowances aren't valid within New Zealand, or in other roaming destinations (including cruise ships or flights).
You can buy and have more than one roaming pack at a time if you need more allocation. The roaming pack which expires first will be used first.
Once a roaming pack inclusion has been consumed or the pack has expired customers will revert to casual (as shown below), unless they sign up for an additional roaming pack.

How services are provided

Roaming relies on the use of overseas telecommunications networks which we don't control and therefore we can't offer any guarantees about the quality of roaming services.
New Zealand rates don't apply when roaming. The charges that apply to roaming services are in addition to any other charges which apply to your mobile plan.
The charges that apply to roaming are in addition to any other charges which apply to your Pay Monthly mobile plan or prepaid pack.
All roaming charges are listed in New Zealand currency and include GST.
Charges listed for incoming and outgoing calls while roaming are charged per minute (you pay the full minute rate for each minute or part minute)
Text messages to and from premium numbers while roaming will be charged at the standard New Zealand rate
Outgoing person-to-person texts are charged per 160 characters. There's no charge for incoming person-to-person texts. Inserting an emoji or non-text character into a text message will change the text message to non-standard. This will reduce the character count of the text message from 160 to 70 characters. This means you'll be charged $0.92 for text messages of 70 characters in length.

Prepaid: Send a picture message to a Spark mobile or any email address for $0.20 per message per recipient. Send a picture message to another mobile network for $0.50 per message per recipient.
Pay Monthly: Send a picture message to a mobile on any network or any email address for $0.50 per message per recipient. Send a video message to a mobile on any network for $1 per message per recipient.
To retrieve a voicemail while overseas you will be charged the standard per minute rate for an outgoing call in the country you're in unless you have an active roaming pack.
Prepaid customers will receive a charge for any voicemails deposited in their voicemail box while roaming, even if their device is switched off. This is charged at the standard per min rate for receiving calls while roaming.
Websites or apps that are zero-rated (don't use your data allocation) while in New Zealand are charged at the standard data roaming rate for the country you're in or deducted from a roaming pack if you have one. The Spark app is zero-rated while roaming.

Casual rates

The Roaming Pack and Roaming Data Pack is activated after first roaming use in eligible destinations and will expire 14 days after the next New Zealand midnight, after the first roaming use or full consumption of the pack inclusions
Customers who have opted into Auto Buy Roaming will have their selected roaming pack automatically purchased and activated on first roaming usage in an eligible country, and additional pack(s) applied subsequently after full consumption of any roaming pack inclusion or when current pack expires. Customers may manually purchase an additional roaming pack at any time.
Once a Roaming Pack and/or Roaming Data Pack has been consumed or the pack has expired, customers will revert to casual rates (below) until another pack is purchased

Fair use policy

Spark's fair use policy ensures everyone can access zero-rated (free) services, like My Spark and use them responsibly. If your use materially exceeds what we would consider normal use patterns over any day, then your use will be deemed excessive and/or unreasonable. As an example prolonged access to zero-rated content would be considered to breach this policy. If you breach this policy Spark may ask you to moderate your usage. If you fail to do so, Spark reserves the right, without further notice, to block your data usage.

Auto buy and billing

Auto Buy Roaming is a way to avoid casual roaming rates for eligible countries. Once you turn it on you don't need to do anything on arrival. You can enable Auto Buy Roaming in MySpark or in the Spark app. Select the MySpark link that follows to go straight to the Mobile settings page where you can turn on Auto Buy Roaming.
Pay Monthly Roaming Voice billing relies on the billing files to be sent from the carrier partner and processed by our billing systems, as such Pay Monthly Roaming Voice usage meters and alerts can be three to four days behind. We encourage you to track your call usage using the call record feature in your mobile, and ensure you have a second pack purchased as back up if you intend to make or receive a lot of calls.

Roamers are able to use 4G and 5G data services in the below destinations.

Destinations will not have 5G coverage available everywhere, and coverage is fully dependant on the carrier partner, not Spark NZ. Roamers will require a 5G capable device.

Note: Data is likely to be consumed faster while using 5G. If you're concerned about this, we suggest disabling 5G data roaming in your phone's settings. We also encourage roamers to utilise the roaming pack offering in roaming pack destinations and our Roaming Data Smart cap functionality to prevent/control casual data charges.

Auto Buy Roaming will apply a new pack when you run out of allowances on your roaming pack or it expires. For example, if you have a $30 Roaming Pack and use all 2GB of data included in the pack, Auto Buy Roaming will apply a new pack. This happens even if you still have texts and/or minutes remaining. The two packs run in parallel until all usage is used up on the first pack or it expires. This is to ensure you're never charged overage rates in a roaming pack destination.
If only one allowance runs out, you're only charged casual rates for that type of usage. For example, if you have a $30 Roaming Pack (includes minutes, texts and data) and run out of data allowance, you'll then incur casual data charges. Your minutes and texts will continue to be deducted from your pack until those allowances also run out, or the pack expires.
The roaming pack charge is applied at the time of automatic or manual purchase.

Calls to premium numbers, for example 1800, 1900 and even freephone numbers, aren't covered in the roaming pack as per the terms and conditions. Calls to satellite phones are charged at $17.25 per min regardless of your roaming location. See our Roaming policy
Sending or receiving picture texts/MMS or videos will incur extra charges as they're not included in roaming packs. If sent using a data application (for example, Facebook Messenger, Whats App, email) they'll consume data from your pack, or incur casual data charges if you don't have a pack.
One standard text message is 160 characters
If a text message is over 160 characters, multiple texts will be generated based on the multiples of 160 characters in the message
There's no charge for receiving a text
Note: Emojis use 90 characters in a text message
