UK Travel Planning Guide: the FAQs
🏥 Should I buy UK travel insurance?
Absolutely yes. Basic coverage is not expensive, and as a visitor you are NOT covered under the NHS. Compare policies and prices with Travel Insurance Master here , a big name in the travel insurance business, and cross that off your list.
🔌 Do I need travel adapters for the UK?
Yes, you do, otherwise you won’t be able to plug in your electronics/phone/lifelines. I recommend this one , which is all-in-one so you can use it in other countries.
🚗 What do I need to drive in the UK?
The first thing you need to check out if you’re planning on renting a car in the UK is this guide to driving in the UK for visitors – the roads, signs, and driving experience will likely not be what you’re used to and it’s essential to prepare yourself to stay safe and aware.
🛌 What’s the best way to book hotels in the UK?
For UK hotels, Booking is the best site as it offers free cancellation on many properties. If you want an apartment, I always recommend VRBO over AirBnb.
📳 Will my phone work in the UK?
Yes – if you set it up right. Check out my guide on making your foreign phone work in the UK to ensure that you get the type of service you need.
🚿 Can I drink the water in the UK?
Yes, UK water is great and perfectly safe. But drink out of taps in any kitchen or use water fountains. Double check before drinking out of the taps in hotel bathrooms, though, as they may be on a different system. London water is safe to drink .

Six Reasons Why Going To Gigs Alone Is The Best
So you want to go see that metalcore band you love but none of your friends like that “shouty” music? Or you REALLY want to go check out that new artist on TikTok you discovered but all your mates won’t go to a gig where they only know one song? Or worse, your group of friends cannot get themselves organized and work out which show and when to go on a tour, so you’re worried you’ll miss out on tickets. Let them be miserable and start living your best life by going to concerts by yourself. Trust us, it’ll be the best thing you’ll ever do!
Going to gigs alone can be daunting. What am I going to do with myself in between sets? Are people going to think I’m weird? Why would I not want to share the experience?
Listen, we are all for sharing the experience, but sometimes it’s either missing out or going alone, and in those cases we definitely recommend going alone. Here’s a few reasons why you’ll never regret it once you build up the courage to go through with it.
1 . See artists you really REALLY want to see
Imagine the FOMO of missing your favourite band on their new tour, hearing all those new songs live, seeing everyone post about it. Don’t let that happen, and get that ticket. Plus you then get to tell the pals who didn’t want to come how you saw that band or artist before they blew up or how they played that one B-side track that everyone loves – now who has FOMO?
2. Meet new friends
It’s no secret that music brings people together. That moment when everyone’s favourite ballad hits and there’s not a dry eye in the building, you turn to your left or right and suddenly you bond with a stranger over your favourite song. For the metalheads, we also recommend mosh pits, follow the rules of the pit but what a way to make new friends!
3. The freedom
Now hear us out – but going to a gig alone means you can get to the venue when you want, you can go to the loos when you want, you can stand in line at the merch for hours and no one will ask if you’re sure you want to wait. And no one will drag you home when you want to wait after the show has finished and find every piece of confetti or ask for the setlist.
4 . It’s a cult
You are not alone in going to gigs by yourself, you’d probably be surprised by how many people do the same thing. Some fan groups even have entire sub cultures of going to gigs alone (shoutout to Frank Turner’s solo armada, we see you!) – bringing us back to reason #2, new friends.
5. Confidence boost
Going to a gig by yourself will do wonders for your confidence. Sure the first time might feel a bit awkward and weird, but isn’t it always? Remember your first day of school? And then it was kind of okay after a while (let’s ignore our teenage years…) Once you’ve done it and experience all of the divinity of a solo gig you’ll feel free as a bird.
6. Experience the music your way
Whether you love hanging out by the bar, need to be front row, prefer seats or want to leave a bit earlier to catch the last train – the world is your oyster! The experience is yours, you don’t need to coordinate with someone else, rely on them to enjoy the show as much as you are and have as much of a good time as you are. And frankly, if you took a chance on a new genre or new artist and it isn’t your vibe, you can just go home. Glorious.
So there you have it – doesn’t sound too bad now does it?! At the end of the day it all comes down to you and your artist, a concert will always be a shared experience whether with strangers or friends. The most important thing to do is have fun.
Your next gig awaits
It all starts here.

Whether it’s your favourite band, an evening with friends, discovering new artists or the seventh show on the tour, we are your go-to home for all things live music.

There is always something to see and do in London. With some of the world’s best art, entertainment, shopping, dining, and history, it’s impossible to be bored in London.
Let’s explore the best things to do in London :

Hyde Park is possibly the most famous park in London, and it is one of the largest. The park has historical significance, having hosted a number of demonstrations and protests including protests by the Suffragettes.
The park’s famous Speaker’s Corner is still occupied by debates, protests, and performance artists every week. The park is home to several memorial features, as well as two bodies of water, the most famous being the Serpentine. Here you can go paddle-boating, see a number of swans, and take in a breath of fresh air in the center of the city. A must-visit.

Soho has long been known as the base of London’s sex industry. The area is now the most popular nightlife spot although there are still some sex shops dotted here and there, giving Soho a delightfully risqué vibe. Soho is often considered the center of the city’s LGBTQ* community with plenty of gay and lesbian bars to check out after the sun goes down.
In addition to bars and clubs, Soho has a number of theaters, jazz bars and restaurants to explore, making it a cultural hotspot. Its close proximity to Leicester Square means it’s also a great place to go for a few drinks after a play or stage show.
During the day, Soho loses none of its charm. Here you’ll find lots of music shops, small cafes and quaint bakeries. Stop for a coffee and pastry on Old Compton Street for perfect people-watching.

9. Thames Cruise
The Thames is the lifeblood of London, bringing industry to the city for centuries. It is England’s longest river, leading into the North Sea at its end. It has been the base for settlements since prehistoric times, and was a strategic importance to the Romans and English Kings, as well as during both World Wars.
There are a number of companies in London offering cruises across the Thames. Cruises run as regularly as every 30 minutes from several key locations. The cruises pass several key sightseeing locations, including Tower Bridge, the Houses of Parliament, and the London Eye.
Some cruises run at night so you can see the sights all lit up, whilst others are served with a meal or afternoon tea. This is a lovely and unique way to view the city, traveling along the historic Thames.

10. Baker Street
One of the cultural staples of London is Baker Street, best known as the street that Arthur Conan Doyle’s infamous detective Sherlock Holmes lived on.
Today you can find a Sherlock Holmes museum near the Underground station, especially popular after the BBC revival ‘Sherlock’.
Madame Tussauds is just around the corner, the internationally-famous wax museum where you can pose with your favorite celebrities.
Afterwards, escape the crowds of Baker Street in the nearby Regent’s Park, or by climbing Primrose Hill for London’s most spectacular view of the city.
11. Brixton Academy
For those on a hunt for live music, London has thousands of unique venues to offer. Venues span every niche or you can just go to an open night at a local pub and see some up-and-coming musicians. One of the best venues in town, though, is Brixton Academy in south London.
The Academy was originally a theater and cinema called the Astoria, opened in 1929. Fifty years later, the venue became the Academy and now hosts some of the biggest rock and pop acts in the world.
Some acts that have played at Brixton Academy include The Clash, Sex Pistols, New Order and Madonna. The Smiths played their final ever performance at Brixton Academy. This is the go-to music venue if you want to catch some live music in London.
The O2 Arena was originally constructed in celebration of the millennium, under the name of ‘the Millennium Dome’. It once acted as exhibition center with various exhibits and hands-on activities aimed primarily at children.
Today, it is a premier destination for live music and stage shows, hosting the biggest names in entertainment on a regular basis. It also houses a cinema as well as various bars and restaurants featuring cuisines from all over the world.
The O2 is an ideal spot to hang out with friends. If you’re seeking some adventure, try climbing to the top of the O2. On these guided walks, you can climb along the dome to the roof where you will witness beautiful views of the city. Afterwards, take the Emirates Air Line across the water. The Air Line is a cable car link offering an exciting and unique view of the city.

13. Brick Lane
Brick Lane was made famous by the book and film adaptation of the same title. As the book’s narrative made clear, Brick Lane is the heart of London’s Bangladeshi community. An incredibly diverse neighborhood, Brick Lane features road signs in both English and Bengali, and is well-known for its abundance of curry houses.
This is the perfect spot to find something spicy to eat but be sure to go to one of the many sweet shops for some authentic South Asian desserts. The area also features a number of trendy bars as well as regular marketplaces, attracting a young and fashionable crowd.
For an art fix, head around the corner to find Whitechapel Gallery – or hunt down the many pieces of street art on Brick Lane and its neighboring streets.
14. Chinatown
London’s Chinatown can be found around Gerrard Street, sandwiched between Soho and Leicester Square. With its Chinese lanterns and eye-catching red arches, it’s difficult to miss this vibrant neighborhood. Filled with authentic Asian restaurants as well as supermarkets and secret bars, there is always something new to explore in Chinatown. For a slice of genuine Asian cuisine, try the HK Diner for delicious roast duck, good service, and big portions. They also serve bubble tea, an Asian trend that has recently swept across the city!
15. Electric Avenue
Electric Avenue is a street in Brixton, south London, famous because it was the first market street in London to be lit by electricity. It spawned the #1 song by Eddy Grant and has been the center of some parts of London history, including the Brixton race riots in 1981. Today, Electric Avenue is home to Brixton Market, a diverse and eclectic food market.
Afterwards, check out the rest of the neighborhood. Brixton features a multitude of small businesses selling unique, quirky and handmade items. This is one of the most diverse areas of London and an excellent spot to do some shopping or catch some live music.
16. Piccadilly Circus
Piccadilly Circus is instantly recognizable, a square filled with bright lights and big electronic screens. Piccadilly Circus has been a busy London spot since the 17th century when it was a commercial hub.
Today it is still the heart of the West End, with easy access from Piccadilly Circus to some of London’s biggest theaters and nightclubs, including the Criterion Theatre. The Statue of Eros in the center of the circus is itself a popular meeting point and tourist destination.
Pay a visit to Ripley’s Believe it or Not museum at Piccadilly Circus to learn some new facts and see the world’s weirdest things. The Trocadero houses a games arcade and some niche shops to satisfy any pop culture cravings.
17. Oxford Street
Oxford Street is not only London’s top spot for shopping but is Europe’s busiest shopping street. It has 300 shops and receives over 500,000 visitors every day.
Shop ‘til you drop in designer stores and internationally-famous department stores like Debenhams and House of Fraser. Selfridges features intricate and beautiful window displays that change with the seasons. These frequently feature interactive windows and work by acclaimed artists.
Around Christmas, the Oxford Street Christmas lights illuminate your shopping sprees and add some glitter to the evenings.
18. Leicester Square
Walk in the footsteps of Hollywood stars by paying a visit to Leicester Square. The square is most famous for hosting film premieres to some of the biggest blockbusters. In fact, the square has been a London hotspot since 1670 and an entertainment center since the 19th century.
The square is surrounded by a number of cinemas with some of the city’s biggest screens, as well as a variety of restaurants. The garden in the center of the square is perfect for cooling off in during the summer or resting your feet after a long day of exploring London.
Visit the Prince Charles Cinema for cult films, singalong screenings, and epic marathon nights. Leicester Square also hosts celebrations for the Chinese New Year where you can see traditional dancing dragons and get lost in the crowds.
19. Galleries
London is an ideal city for art lovers with so many galleries to visit, featuring the best in classic and contemporary art. Most of the city’s galleries are free to visitors, including the National Gallery in Trafalgar Square. The National Gallery has something for everyone with work by da Vinci, Turner, van Gogh and Rembrandt on display.
For prolific modern art, visit the Tate Modern on the Southbank. The building itself is a piece of art, towering above the waterfront. Inside, find pieces by Picasso, Klee and Delauney. The gallery also features exciting temporary exhibits on every level of the building making it the perfect place for an art fix.
20. Harrods
Harrods is one of London’s most famous department stores, known particularly for serving the elite and the super-rich. Since opening in 1824, Harrods’ patrons have included Oscar Wilde, Laurence Olivier and the Royal Family.
The luxury is spread across a number of floors, laid out in style through Harrods’ themed halls. The food hall sells indulgent delicacies from fresh meat and cheese to superior marmalades and pates. The Egyptian hall sells fashion in opulent style to make you feel like a pharaoh as you pass through.
At Christmas, Harrods puts together a number of luxury Christmas hampers filled with goodies to make the festivities even more special. Explore the building and get lost while shopping for lavish perfumes, children’s toys, and even pets in London’s most exclusive department store.
21. Platform 9 ¾
King’s Cross is one of the city’s busiest locations with a train station that has been open since 1852 serving much of the country. Recent renovations have given a sleek, modern look to the station – try to find the hidden tunnel with walls that light up with art.
But for many people around the world, King’s Cross is known best for something else: the station that Harry Potter uses to journey to Hogwarts. Now you can visit Platform 9 ¾ in real life, in King’s Cross railway station.
Pose besides a luggage trolley disappearing magically into the wall and have your photo taken to commemorate your wizarding journey forever! Don’t forget to wear house colors.
22. Museums
London is one of the best cities in the world for culture with a number of free museums to enjoy. On Exhibition Road in South Kensington, you can find many museums close together.
Start with the Natural History Museum and pose for a photo with the infamous Diplodocus skeleton in the main hall. Explore the museum and find ancient fossils and stuffed animals including a dodo replica.
Afterwards, go to the Science Museum next door for hands-on activities and to investigate scientific progress throughout the ages.
A short stroll to the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) will shift focus to cultural history.
The V&A Museum has artwork on show alongside fashion and living tools from around the world. Here you will find art students diligently sketching the classical statues and ironwork.
Finally, pay a visit to the British Museum where you can see the Rosetta Stone, mummified remains and explore centuries of archaeological discoveries.
The Samsung Digital Discovery Centre is perfect for children, with hundreds of free activities to explore history and culture through modern technology.
23. Bond Street
Bond Street connects to Oxford Street and is a popular shopping district in its own right. Bond Street differs to Oxford Street in its selection of stores, with a much greater focus on the exclusive and the designer. Bond Street is one of the most expensive shopping streets in London and is worth visiting for a taste of the indulgent.
Doormen stand patiently outside many shop entrances. Diamonds glitter in the windows of watchmakers, jeweller’s, and even handbag stores. On this street you will find Tiffany’s, as well as the flagship stores for Cartier and Ralph Lauren.
After a spot of window shopping – or flashing the cash – pose with the ‘Allies’ statue of Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt sitting on a bench. Finish your trip to Bond Street by seeking out London’s oldest outdoor sculpture above the entrance to Sotheby’s. This sculpture is from Ancient Egypt and is over 3,000 years old.
24. Buckingham Palace
A trip to London is incomplete without strolling through Green Park to catch a glimpse of Buckingham Palace. The palace has been home to the British Royal Family since 1837. It features 775 rooms and the largest private garden in London.
Some of the palace is open to visitors so you can see a little piece of the royal lifestyle. From outside, watch the world-famous Changing of the Guard. This procedure happens a few times every day and is a great opportunity to witness a historic tradition and the utmost discipline of the Royal Guard – who are all wearing the iconic London bearskin.
25. Explore at Night
London is a vibrant metropolis both during the day and throughout the night. There is always something happening even after dark, from one-off events to club nights. As the sun sets, London’s lights switch on providing the city with a magical illumination.
There are free walking tours that explore the city at night or hop on a night tour bus. See St Paul’s Cathedral lit up after dark or visit the Gothic architecture of Big Ben and Westminster Cathedral. Go to Soho and the West End for buzzing nightlife amongst the big neon signs.
Travel a little further out to Hampstead Heath for a spot of stargazing or see Hyde Park at night where bats are frequently sighted. Finally, after a long day and night exploring one of the best cities in the world, visit Polo Bar at Liverpool Street for 24/7 greasy spoon dining.

Charli XCX confirms new Brat album release date ahead of huge London Fashion Week gig tonight
There is usually one — if we’re lucky — properly big budget party per fashion week. In the millions big. And when a mega-brand (with a non-British approach to spending cash) does land on our doorsteps, everyone remembers.
In recent history, Gucci’s Tate Modern takeover (thousands of guests; Kate Moss dancing on the sofas; a disco ball so vast it looked like a small planet) and Prada’s Paradoxe perfume launch at the then never visited Outernet (which involved Emma Watson and a lightshow like no other), both come to mind. People still talk about them today.
This year, another city-shaking event has been promised. Tonight, H&M are flying in queen of Brat summer Charli XCX for the fashion week gig to end them all. Forget the luxury shows. Who cares if you are on the front row. The only ticket anyone cares about is one to the H&M party in East London.
To increase Charli fever, today she also released a new song, ‘Talk talk featuring troye sivan’, and confirmed a release date of 11 October for a new album titled 'Brat and it's completely different but also still brat'.
It all comes after the Apple and 360 singer posed up a storm in a leopard, faux fur coat for H&M’s new AW24 campaign — part the Swedish fast fashion label’s attempt to reposition itself as a more upmarket contender. Lila Moss , Arca, Lux Gillespie and Ajus Samuel are just some of the other names joining her in the campaign.
Unlike at Gucci and Prada’s events, though, H&M also opened up tickets to the public. Starting in August, everyone who signed up to their H&M Membership platform could be in with a chance to win a ticket (see what they did there?). Charli XCX and Jamie XX , the DJ and musician who will also play on the night, both shared links with their fans to apply for tickets as well. This phase has now, they tell me, ended.
But hope is not lost. A spokesperson for the brand says “for those looking to secure a ticket ahead of Thursday, unfortunately the event is now at capacity but if you keep an eye out across H&M and on social media, some last-minute tickets might be released.”
And then, there is always old fashion way: try and blag the door. Beware, though — various PR’s preparing themselves for an extremely busy night assure me they’ll be ready to get tough. What would a 3-6-5 party girl do?

The best gigs of 2022 in London
From post-punk to professional whistlers, our choices are eclectic at the very least
You know, this year has been a stinker at times. But there’s no better ailment to a shit piece of news than belting out your favourite songs so loud that you need a throat sweet when you get home (just me?). This year, we fully embrace post-pando gig life, with a wide variation of highlights across the board from the Time Out team. The Gen Zers put us all to shame with achingly cool Spotify rising stars, veteran metalheads got to revel in nostalgia built up over two decades of listening, and some of us embraced the camp theatrics of popstars wearing light-up bras. These are gigs that brought us nothing but joy. So don’t judge our taste, alright?
RECOMMENDED: 🎶 The 20 best albums of 2022 🎥 The best films of 2022 (so far) 🎵 The 22 best songs of 2022
Been there, done that? Think again, my friend.
1. Lady Gaga - Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, July 29
This was probably the best gig of my life. And not just because I’ve been a fan of Gaga’s since her blood-splattered, bow-haired, bubble-dress ‘Poker Face’ days. Giving you the drama of an elaborate rock cabaret, this gig had all you’d want from Mother Monster. I didn’t care that I almost lost my life to 40-foot flames, I would've died happy. I got to see Gaga in a wild assortment of costumes, gyrating with a 12-strong brigade, dedicating her first night of the Chromatica Ball to Alexander McQueen and Isabella Blow. Talented, brilliant, incredible, amazing, showstopping… – Georgia Evans, Deputy Commercial Editor
2. Orchestra Baobab - Union Chapel, August 9
I’ve never been to Senegal, but Orchestra Baobab have regularly taken me there. And I’ve never felt more like I’ve been in a sweaty Dakar bar than one fine day in August this year. It was the time of the second heatwave. I was perched on a pew in Union Chapel, ginger beer in hand. And here was my favourite band, on their fiftieth-anniversary tour, postponed due to Covid. They rattled through the famous ones from the 1982 album ‘Pirate’s Choice’, but with Orchestra Baobab it’s not really about that. They don’t have bangers. They have vibes. And so we got an hour and a half of floating riffs, blaring sax and dancing, dancing, dancing: just the tonic for the hellish heat outside. — Huw Oliver, UK Editor
3. Emperor - Roundhouse, May 7
Emperor was a big part of my life about 20 years ago. Out of all the Norwegian black metal bands they were the most impressive. I'd long ago surrendered hope of seeing them live. Emperor sort of broke up ages ago, and even before that, they barely ever gigged. Despite not being so into extreme metal these days, the moment I heard about this out-of-the-blue Roundhouse show I knew I had to go. What I thought was going to be a semi-enjoyable exercise in nostalgia, was in fact one of the most intense and thrilling concert experiences of my life. The music – brutal and bombastic – was a perfect fit for London’s most idiosyncratic venue. — Joe Mackertich, Editor, London
4. Confidence Man - KOKO, November 1
When Janet Planet and Sugar Bones exploded onto the stage at KOKO wearing XXXL suits, fit with hilariously exaggerated shoulder pads that moved in time to the beat, I knew we were in for a wild ride. With champagne showers, multiple costume changes and high-energy dance moves, Confidence Man at Koko was a hedonistic, joyous hour and fifteen minutes of wall-to-wall bangers. If you don’t know about the enigmatic Australian dance-pop quartet that are behind bops like ‘C.O.O.L Party’ and ‘Toy Boy’, I strongly urge you to seek them out, even if it’s only to see front woman Janet Planet, drenched in champagne, gyrating in a flashing LED oversized cone bra. — India Lawrence, contributing writer
5. Shygirl - Heaven, March 9
The pandemic might have put paid to live music for far longer than was comfortable, but for Shygirl’s long-anticipated ‘ALIAS’ tour in March, that came with one unexpected advantage. Two postponements and a full calendar year after she was initially supposed to tour her brilliant 2020 EP, the anticipation made for one of the liveliest atmospheres I’ve ever experienced in a venue as intimate as Heaven. It was an immensely gratifying return to gig-going that will stay with me for a long time. – Rosie Hewitson, Things To Do Editor, London
6. Rema - O2 Academy Brixton, November 8
22-year-old afrobeat rising star from Nigeria, Rema, emerged from the inside of a red telephone box at O2 Academy Brixton in November, as a fitting introduction for the opening night of his first-ever UK tour. Performing his acclaimed debut album ‘Raves and Roses’ along with famed tracks ‘Dumebi’ and ‘Calm Down’, Rema affirmed his transformation from local musician to global superstar with his playful, fiery stage presence and mesmerising vocals. With surprise appearances from Dave and Fireboy DML, the concert felt like a roaring party in celebration of Rema's success. — Ellie Muir, contributing writer
7. Erykah Badu - Southbank Centre, November 6
Erykah Badu’s two nights at the Queen Elizabeth Hall felt like something special. The emblematic R&B singer kept us waiting for a full 40 minutes, but boy, was it worth it. Backed by a nine-strong live band, Badu belted out hit after hit to celebrate 25 years of her debut album, ‘Baduizm’. Swirling in synths, bluesy piano, and thundering drums, her spellbinding vocals were enough to cast the audience into a strange sort of neo-soul trance – one where they stayed on their feet with applause for the entire show. — Chiara Wilkinson, Chief Features Writer, UK
8. Pat Metheny - Eventim Apollo, June 12.
Listen to me, Pat Metheny is the greatest living jazz guitarist. Maybe even the best jazz guitarist ever; a master of fluid lines, chordal cleverness, shreddy dexterity and the owner of the biggest mop of hair in the genre. Seeing him slide through classic after classic, from early bangers to experimental free jazz wild ones, was like watching magic happen. Beautiful, jazzy magic. — Eddy Frankel, Art & Culture Editor, London
9. Diana Ross - The O2, June 23
Watching a living legend perform is never going to be a bad idea, even if they’re autotuned to the hilt – who remembers the Queen’s 70th Jubilee concert? – with the backing singers bearing the brunt of the work. But seeing a Supreme in concert isn’t so much about hitting the high notes, but being in the presence of someone so ingrained in musical folklore, they don’t need to. Plus the outfit changes were chef’s kiss. Never stop rocking those feathered jackets, Di. — Jess Phillips, Senior Social Media Editor
10. Tropical Fuck Storm - Studio 9294, September 30
When Aussie rock legends Gareth Liddiard and Fiona Kitschin stepped away from The Drones and rebooted (along with Lauren Hammel and Erica Dunn) as Tropical Fuck Storm, we should’ve known that mellowing out wasn’t on the radar. The band’s late September London show was total proof: an all-bite, no-frills blare of arching punk blues and thickly fuzzy noise rock, track after track belted out to a tiny Studio 9294 (incidentally, perfectly sized for this kind of stuff) – plus a loose, rampant cover of ‘Staying Alive’. Glorious. — Ed Cunningham, contributing writer
11. Molly Lewis - Laylow, November 3
The world of professional whistlers might be a small one, but Molly Lewis’s first-ever London engagement is still big news. From the small Australian town of Mullumbimby via her current home of Los Angeles, Molly’s schtick is impeccable; razzle-dazzle Rat Pack panache meets end-of-the-pier vaudeville banter which has the Notting Hill basement crowd tittering with glee. And that’s before the whistling even starts; hypnotic, tiki dreamscapes that make the perfect accompaniment to cocktail hour. — Leonie Cooper, Food & Drink Editor, London
12. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - O2 Academy Brixton, June 7
The New York trio have been away for aeons and could have probably squeaked an arena comeback show thanks to the enduring, Gen Z-friendly popularity of their timeless hit ‘Maps’. But much as the mellow new album ‘Cool It Down’ marks a slower pace, the point of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs live is that they’re forever those scrappy, angular, unimpeachably hip art poppers they were 20 years ago. In the dark of Brixton, Karen O looked exactly the same as she did two decades before, the support acts – Porridge Radio and Dry Cleaning – were immaculately picked representatives of the new generation, and basically the audience got to roleplay being hip again, which was just peachy. – Andrzej Lukowski, Theatre & Dance Editor, UK
13. Tame Impala - All Points East, August 25
Getting to see Tame Impala's long-awaited headline set at All Points East was like something out of a psychedelic fever dream. There was dancing (thanks to the groovier tracks on the latest release, 'The Slow Rush'), there was headbanging ('Elephant''s gnarly riff will do that to you), there was the collective excitement of a crowd kept inside for two years, and there were, of course, some very crazy lights and visuals. I even went on some guy's shoulders, which I haven't done since I was a literal teenager. Best night of the year! — Grace Beard, Deputy Travel Editor

Instead of a Fashion Show, H&M Hosted a Charli XCX Concert
“I didn’t know H&M had this in them,” said Ethan Brayfield, a Charli XCX super fan I met in the center of the Copper Box Arena minutes before Charlotte, as he exclusively called her, emerged onstage. We were watching a group of modern dancers flip and jump in H&M leather trench coats as the anticipation built for Charli. Brayfield predicted she would play two songs and bail, but she delivered a jam-packed 30-minute set that got the whole arena jumping, singing everything from “360” to “Guess” and older classics like “Vroom Vroom.” As her recent viral hit “Apple” started, she told the crowd, “Okay, if you want to do the dance, you should totally do it.” When the time came, I watched a sea of people crack an imaginary apple over their heads in unison. (Charli, however, did not.)
Brayfield said he’d been a Charli fan for ten years but had never managed to see her headline a show. (He is only 20 years old, after all.) He landed a ticket to this concert through a link Charli shared on Instagram a few weeks ago. Among the approximately 5,000 guests at the event, hosted for free by H&M, about half were regular people like Brayfield who’d signed up for tickets through Charli’s feeds or were avid H&M shoppers. The other half were press and influencer types flown in from most of H&M’s major markets around the world. Everyone dressed in their best brat style with a punkish British twist. I saw a lot of mesh shirts, parkas, baggy jeans, leather jackets, and sassy boots. The guests were delighted by the fashion-show-style perks: the open bar and waiters passing out fries and burgers. A long queue formed for a vending machine dispensing sunglasses and branded keychains.
Charli begins her Sweat tour in Detroit on Saturday, so seeing her in London now was a special treat and a coup for H&M. The Swedish retailer opened the performance by playing a conceptual commercial featuring its fall 2024 collection, which featured leather miniskirts, oversize tailoring, and embellished mule flats, almost all in black — a more polished, Phoebe Philo–esque collection than you may associate with H&M from recent years. Known for its low prices and fast reaction to trends, H&M is trying to regain the hearts of young shoppers in a Shein world by offering something more than bargains. This fall, the company is hosting a series of 12 music-focused parties in eight cities, and each event will have its own corresponding collection. The Charli concert, where Jamie xx and Sherelle also performed, is the first and largest of the series. (The next one is in New York City in October.)
“Music is much more relevant than a catwalk,” said H&M’s creative director, Jörgen Andersson, before the show, adding that after years when H&M collaborated with prominent fashion designers and labels — such as Karl Lagerfeld and Balmain — the retailer wants to “put the spotlight on our own design team and our own collection.”
And on its ability to tap a wide network of influencers, who on Thursday included Amelia Dimoldenberg , Anaïs Gallagher, Iris Law, Lila Moss, Naomi Campbell, and model Amelia Gray, who told me her skirt-suit outfit was H&M but had been tweaked by her tailor and stylist to be a little more fitted. “A little chic party moment,” she said. “You know, we have Charlie XCX, and we’re still at work — we have to mix the two.”
