View of the palm grove in Elche with the Basilica de Santa María in the background. Alicante

Alicante - Alacant

Region of Valencia

The historic quarter of Elche, capital of the region of Bajo Vinalopó (El Baix Vinalopò) in Alicante, preserves part of its Muslim past and Baroque splendour.

Its palm tree grove, a World Heritage Site, adds to the appeal of the region, along with two holiday celebrations that have been declared of International Tourist Interest: "Domingo de Ramos" (Palm Sunday) and the Mystery of Elche. The Festa d’Elx (Festival of Elche) has been declared Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. Elche is a must for many reasons, such as its many nature reserves, its coastal towns and its prestigious gastronomy, to name a few.

To learn of the origins of this city in the province of Alicante, you should head to the Monographic Museum and Archaeological Site at Alcúdia . Although the region has been inhabited since the Neolithic period, Iberian and Roman artefacts are most common. This was the site where the Lady of Elche was found, which is presently kept at the National Archaeological Museum in Madrid. It was the Arabs who brought the city to its present location and surrounded it with palm tree groves in the 10th century. When Jaime I reconquered the city, the Christians occupied Vila Murada (inside the city) and the Jews and Moors took over Raval (outside the city).

Vila Murada

On the banks of the Vinalopó River, Vila Murada is the area of Elche with most history. With its Arab urban layout of narrow streets and alleys, it was declared a Historic-Artistic Site. Calahorra stands here, the Moorish tower that formed part of the walled precinct. The Palace of Altamira, attached to the old walls, houses the Local Archaeological Museum. Other sites of interest include the Casa de la Vila (the City Hall), the tower of Consell and the numerous ancestral homes. In this area lies the Basilica Santa María , built on top of the old mosqueand several Christian temples. The present layout dates back to the 17th century, but because of the time it took to complete, it combines Baroque and Neoclassical elements. The Mystery of Elche, a sacred musical drama of the death, assumption and crowning of the Virgin, which was declared a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity, as well as a holiday celebration of International Tourist Interest, takes place on August 14 and 15. La Casa de la Festa ("the House of the Mystery of Elche", located in the old fifteenth-century Charity Hospital) and the Local Museum of the Mystery of Elche exhibit different elements from the staging of the drama and have a virtual performance of the most impressive moments of the play. The convent of La Mercé is located in the Medieval outskirts, the part of the city beyond the old walls. The old Arab public baths, located in the subsoil, date back to the 12th century. The district of Raval (formerly the Moorish and Jewish quarters) is located further away from Vila Murada. The old City Hall of Raval presently houses the Museum of Contemporary Art. Its collection includes mainly Catalan and Valencian artists, from 1939 to the present day.

The Palm Tree Grove

The urban area of the palm tree grove of Elche, declared a World Heritage Site , surrounds the city. On one end is the Town Park, the largest gardened area of the palm tree forest, which has a total of 200,000 specimens. The Royal Mill, the Park Museum and the Rotonda (an open-air theatre) are found here. The old mill and granary, of Arab origin, house the local Palm Plaiting workshop. In it, the palms to be carried in the Palm Sunday processions—a festivity that has been declared of International Tourist Interest—are crafted in a traditional manner. Huerto del Cura (the Priest's Orchard), declared a National Historic Garden , has palm trees from all over the world, arranged in a peculiar manner, following Arab, Mediterranean and local influences. In this area, where it is also possible to admire great examples of traditional architecture, the Imperial Palm Tree stands out. This is an impressive 150-year-old specimen with eight branches. The traditional palm tree grove, divided into numerous orchards, can be visited on foot or by bicycle. From Elche, visitors can travel to the rest of the province: the numerous nature reserves, the monumental cities inland and the one-hundred-and-sixty-kilometre-long coastline ( Costa Blanca ), filled with beaches and historic towns. Alicante, Villajoyosa, Benidorm, Altea Javea and Denia are located in the northern half, on the shores of the Mediterranean. Villena, Alcoy/Alcoi, Elda and Cocentaina are inland to the north of the province. The nature reserves of Pego-Oliva Fen, Montgó, Penyal d’Ifac and Font Roja Kermes Oak Grove are among the most beautiful open spaces. Torrevieja and Santa Pola are on the southern coast, while Crevillente and Orihuela are inland to the south. The nature reserves of Santa Pola Salt Marshes and El Fondó and the La Mata and Torrevieja Lagoons. In any of these places, the wonderful rice dishes , prepared in the most creative ways, must be tasted: "a banda" (cooked with fish stock), with rabbit and snails, "con costra"(with sausages and egg), as a stew or dry. The fish and seafood from the Levante coast will not let you forget that you are on the shores of the Mediterranean. And for dessert, the ice cream and turrón from this region are something visitors cannot miss. In addition, wine with Denominación de Origen Alicante will pay tribute to such delicacies.

We’re spoilt for choice with amazing places to visit on the Costa Blanca, and one of our favourite towns in this area is Elche .

World famous for the number of palm trees in the town (over 200,000), Elche has an interesting history which can be seen in the Moorish and Baroque architecture across the city.

Where is Elche?

Elche, or Elx in Valencian, is a town in southeast Spain in the Alicante Province and is the capital of the Bajo Vinapoló. Alicante to Elche is approximately 28km, with the airport located approximately 18km from the city centre.

Is Elche worth visiting?

Elche is definitely worth a visit if you’re in the Alicante area. The Palmeral de Elche, or Elche Palm Grove, covers most of the centre of the city, and was declared a UNESCO heritage site in 2000 (one of three UNESCO sites in Elche). Elche has beautiful parks and a rich history to explore, with some fantastic beaches nearby. If you are looking for a traditional Spanish town that is quieter than Alicante city, Elche is a must visit.

You won’t be short of places to visit and things to see in Elche. From parks to museums, palm trees to gastronomy, set aside plenty of time to explore the top attractions in Elche. Here’s a list of what to do in Elche for visitors of all ages…

Visit the Museum of Archaeology and History & Altamira Palace

One of the most interesting museums in Elche is the MAHE where you can learn more about Elche’s cultural heritage. The exhibits here are split into two sections – the archaeological section covers the origins of Elche up to the arrival of the Moors; and the historical section covers the founding of the Muslim city to present day.

There are many historical artefacts and antiques on display as well as lots of interactive displays for children. You can also go from the museum into the Palacio de Altamira , a Moorish-style fortress with amazing panoramic views across the palm groves and city.

Elche Archaeological Museum is open Monday to Friday from 10am – 6pm. On Sundays the museum is open from 10am – 3pm. Entry is €3 and free on Sundays.

Watch the Misteri d’Elx

Elche’s Mystery Play ( Misteri d’Elx ) is a two-act drama performed annually on 14th and 15th August in the Basilica de Santa María. This world famous play dates back to the 13th century and has been designated Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO. It is the only religious play in the world to be staged inside a church thanks to a special dispensation from Pope Urban VIII.

The play is based on several texts from the Apocryphal Gospels, popular during the Middle Ages. The text is written in Valencian, with a few verses in Latin, and has a total of 259 verses.

Access to the Basilica for the play is free on both dates, however due to its popularity, it’s essential to arrive at the Basilica several hours in advance if you want to get a seat.

Discover the El Cau open air museum

A real hidden gem in Elche (we’d lived here for 3 years before we even knew it existed!) is El Cau in the mountain range approximately 10km from the city centre.

In what used to be an old quarry this open air museum has more than 100 sculptures carved and painted into the rocks. Among the sculptures you can see the city’s coat of arms, Elche’s Glorieta Fountain, the Lady of Elche, El Palmeral and monuments such as the Basilica de Santa María.

Surrounded by busy city streets, this is a strangely tranquil place, the stone walls encircling it, blocking out much of the city noise.

You can also take a ride on a camel or a donkey and visit the farm animals section with cows, pigs, goats, horses and sheep.

Moving to Elche

If you are thinking of moving to Elche, then you must read our expat interview with Miguel Angel Martinez Perez of Marhouse Internacional below:

Miguel, what would you say would be the advantages to living in Elche compared to other Costa Blanca towns?

Definitely you will live in a “real” Spanish town. What I mean is that many foreigners used to buy properties in some areas where it is even difficult to find Spanish people, like a “guettho”, but if you wish to live like a “real” Spanish, Elche is a very good choice. Elche is the second biggest town in Alicante province and the third one in Valencia Region and it offers everything you would find in a medium town (about 225,000 people). There are many companies based here and the main industry is shoes. It has universities, international schools and it is very well communicated to the rest of Spain and Europe through the International airport. It is a dynamic city where everyone will feel comfortable.

Would the area not suit certain types of people, i.e. are there any possible downsides?

Well, if you prefer to live in a very touristic area and not to mix with local people, there are better choices in Alicante province.

What proportion of the local population are Spanish?

I don’t really know. You can find people from many nationalities. However most of us are Spanish. It is not like other towns where there are even more foreigners than Spanish people.

What are your favourite things to do in the area?

I like running and the river side is an excellent place to practice sports. I also enjoy the beach. Elche beaches are gorgeous. Arenales del Sol, for instance.

Arenales del Sol Platja

Can you give us some insider tips to the best bars or restaurants?

The offer on restaurants is huge. There are many students from universities, so there are several cheap bars and restaurants for tapas (the old town – city center is a very good area for “tapeo”). For a real Spanish experience I would choose El Granaino restaurant and for a very special dinner La Finca restaurant (1 Michelin star, just fantastic!)

Are there many facilities such as doctors and dentists, shops etc?

Yes there are. There are 2 big public hospitals, 1 private hospital and several clinics. I think you can find every specialist here.

Regarding the shops, you can find them in every neighborhood, but I will suggest the city center and L´Aljub commercial center (very popular).

Are there smaller villages nearby that you might also recommend?

Elche is very well communicated to the rest of the province, so in 1 hour driving you can be in Altea (which is lovely). I suggest to visit Tabarca island: you can drive to Santa Pola and take a boat in the harbour (very nice trip).

What are the nearest international schools and how good are they?

Laude Newton College and La Devesa are in Elche. I have heard that King´s College will start to build a school this month. These schools are in Elche, all of them near the football stadium.

Newton College is recognized every year as one of the best schools in the region.

Is crime an issue for expats?

Not at all. Elche is a safe place to live.

Coming onto buying property, what is the market like now in terms of prices going up, or down or staying the same?

Elche Basilica

The market has been very quiet during some years. 2015 was the first good year and 2016 is growing nicely. Prices started to go up last year. I must say that we work with many Chinese clients who are investing in Real Estate for the golden visa. These clients are not affected by the Spanish recession.

Is this a good time to buy and are there any repossessions or very cheap properties still available to buy?

Without a doubt, it is a good time to buy. Prices are not going to go down further. On the contrary, they have started to increase a little bit. There are some repossessions but not that many as in the past and you can still find some cheap properties and many properties are now value for money.

What urbanisations are there and can you describe each one and how they might differ from each other?

Clients are now looking for apartments and townhouses in urbanisations in the new neighborhoods of Elche like new area of Altabix, Cantallops, Football Stadium. People are looking for urbanisations with swimming pools, playground area for children and paddle tennis court.

How much are the typical property prices in Elche for apartments, villas etc?

140,000 euros for a 3-bedroom apartment in an urbanisation in the new areas . In an older neighborhood you can find a 3-bedroom apartments from 80,000 euros.

Regarding the villas, a typical price is 270,000 euros for a property in a plot of land of 2,000 euros.

Any tips and advice to people looking to buy in Elche or surrounding area?

Elche is everything you can need and the weather is exceptional. It is not the kind of town that is full during the summer and empty in winter. From an investing point of view, I would choose to buy in an urbanisation in a new neighborhood: there is a big demand, people want to live there and it is easy to rent.

It’s possible to get apartments in elche for less than 80k euros. If it’s in a building without a lift, a thrid or even second floor apartment can be obtained for 40K and a lot less if it needs refurbishment. There are a few areas that one should not touch, but most of the town is very safe and livable.

Brief History of Elche

Your exploration of Elche’s historical tapestry will uncover its ancient origins, significant medieval developments, and transformations in the modern era.

Elche’s history dates back to the Iberian period, when the original settlement was founded. The city witnessed substantial growth under Carthaginian and later Roman rule. It was during the Roman occupation that Elche saw the establishment of the Palmeral, an expansive grove of date palms which remains a hallmark of the city.

Middle Ages

In 1265, during the reign of Jaime I, Elche was recaptured from the Moors. This period marked a significant shift, with lands being redistributed, particularly fertile territory on the left bank of the Vinalopó River. Here, the Sequia Major canal facilitated the irrigation of numerous date palm groves, many of which have survived to the present day.

Moving forward into the modern era, Elche continued to develop and expand. Its population growth made it the third most populated municipality in the Valencian region. Steeped in tradition, Elche annually commemorates the medieval drama “ Misterio de Elche ,” which celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin in the 17th-century church of Santa María. This custom reflects the enduring cultural heritage that shapes the city.

History of Elche

An understanding of Elche’s economy involves recognising its diversification across various sectors, each contributing to its financial stability. Here, you’ll explore Elche’s economic structure through its predominant agricultural basis, industrious achievements in manufacturing, and its evolving services and tourism sectors.

Agriculture

In Elche, you will find a robust agricultural sector traditionally known for its extensive palm groves. The irrigation techniques inherited from historical Moorish occupation have allowed for prosperous cultivation, particularly of date palms, which have become symbolic of the city.

Elche’s economic fame largely springs from footwear manufacturing. It is home to over 1,000 shoe factories, indicating a pronounced industrial presence that not only fuels local employment but also positions Elche as an influential footwear producer in Europe. Additionally, a segment of its industrial activity orbits around the rubber industry, a by-product of its shoe making prowess.

Services and Tourism

Although Elche is not predominantly reliant on tourism, the services sector is catching up, having a considerable proportion of over 40% of companies in this domain. As tourism gradually becomes more significant, you might observe a rise in the number of firms providing services to both locals and visitors. This city blends cultural heritage with business dynamism, making it more than just a traditional tourist destination.

Written by Maartje

Are you thinking about visiting Elche—or Elx in Valencian—and wondering what the best activities are in this must-see destination in Eastern Spain? Renowned for its expansive palm groves, which are recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Elche is famously dubbed the city of palm trees. This city is steeped in history and culture, particularly influenced by the Moorish period, which is evident from the very palm trees that characterize the landscape.

Elche is undoubtedly a destination you must consider visiting. Before our holiday in this region of Spain, we hadn’t even heard of Elche. It’s surprising that this city isn’t more prominent on the tourist map because its sprawling palm gardens provide a truly unique experience. Throw in a scenic waterfall hike, and you’ll understand why we’re so taken with this destination. In this blog post, we’ll explore the palm tree city of Spain, offering practical tips and highlighting the top attractions in Elche.

Palmeral de Elche

Where is Elche Located in Spain?

Elche, also known as Elx in Valencian, enjoys a strategic position in the southeast of Spain, within the vibrant Valencia region. Remembering both names might be helpful when you’re navigating local maps or following road signs.

Located in the province of Alicante, Elche offers the best of two worlds: it marries the rich cultural backdrop of the Spanish interior with the proximity to the Mediterranean coast. For travelers from the Netherlands, Elche is conveniently accessible. The international airport in Alicante, which is merely a 20-minute drive away, provides direct flights to many European cities . Alternatively, you can fly into Murcia airport, about an hour’s drive, which also offers direct flights to the Netherlands.

The area around Elche is brimming with tourist spots that are well worth a visit, including the beautiful beaches of the Costa Blanca and nearby cities like Alicante and Murcia . This combination makes Elche a perfect spot for both culture buffs and beach lovers.

Palmeral de Elche

What Elche is Famous For

Elche distinguishes itself from other picturesque Spanish cities with two standout features: the expansive Palmeral and the impressive Misteri d’Elx. It’s also famous among Spaniards for the iconic sculpture, The Lady of Elche.

The Palmeral of Elche , listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site , is one of the largest palm groves in Europe. This verdant heritage from the tenth century, created by the Moors, now contains over 200,000 date palms. This palm grove stands as a beautiful testament to the enduring impact of historical Arabic agricultural practices on contemporary European destinations.

The Mystery Play of Elche , or Misteri d’Elx, an event that takes place every August, is emblematic of the city. This ancient religious drama is performed in the Basilica of Santa María and is recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage. The play beautifully portrays the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with aerial scenes featuring angels who dramatically descend and ascend, all set to the backdrop of a choir that delivers classical melodies from the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and Baroque periods.

Among Spaniards and cultural aficionados, the Dama de Elche is also well regarded. This renowned Iberian limestone bust, dating back to the fourth century BC, was unearthed in 1897 near Elche. The bust depicts a woman adorned with an intricate hairstyle and jewelry, suggesting her high social or religious standing. The unique spiral rolls next to her face and the elaborate necklaces are distinctive features of this sculpture. Currently, the bust is housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Madrid and is not on display in Elche itself.

10 Best Things To Do In Elche

#1 the palmeral de elche.

The Palmeral de Elche is an expansive oasis of over 200,000 date palms that envelops the city, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2000. This spectacular palm grove is a direct legacy of the Moorish era, although it’s possible that the initial planting was started by the Phoenicians or Romans. The date palms, originally from the Middle East and North Africa, have played a pivotal role in Elche’s agricultural history thanks to the innovative irrigation techniques introduced by the Moors.

These ancient techniques developed a lush green labyrinth that continues to thrive due to an ingenious irrigation system, efficiently distributing water throughout the area. This system allows the palm trees and other vegetation to flourish despite the region’s typically dry climate. It’s a testament to the engineering skills of the Moors that the system still functions effectively, maintaining this unique palm forest in Spain.

Elche’s Palmeral has also been integral to city life and local culture over the centuries. The palm trees provide shade and a cool retreat during the hot summer months. They have also been a source of dates and materials for traditional crafts for centuries. Additionally, the white palms prepared for Palm Sunday are an important export and cultural symbol of Elche, recognized throughout Spain.

Admission to the vast Palmeral itself is free. Those interested in the historical and cultural significance of the Palmeral should definitely visit the Museo del Palmeral. If you’re traveling with children, like we were, you’ll be pleased to know there’s an excellent playground within the palm garden that caters to all ages.

Palmeral Elche

#2 Basílica de Santa María

The Basílica de Santa María stands out as one of Elche’s most prominent landmarks, renowned for its lavish baroque architecture.

Originally built in the 13th century on the site of a former mosque, the present church, dating from the 17th century, replaced an earlier Gothic church. The basilica is notable for its elaborately decorated main entrance and the San Agatángelo door, both adorned with sculptures by Nicolás de Bussi. Its interior is dominated by a large dome, externally covered in blue tiles, which plays a crucial role during the annual Misteri d’Elx—a historical play that has been held in the church for centuries, attracting global audiences.

Entrance to the basilica is free, though there is a small fee to climb the tower, which offers spectacular views over the city and the Palmeral. The basilica also houses the Museo de la Virgen.

Basilica Elche

#3 Palau d’Altamira

The Palau d’Altamira, also known as the Alcázar de la Señoría, is a historic monument in Elche. Originally established in the Middle Ages as a significant fort during Moorish rule, it was rebuilt in the 15th century by a Castilian nobleman. What you see today is this 15th-century castle.

The Palacio de Altamira is striking with its large square tower and round corner towers, located right next to the Palmeral on a large square with floor fountains—a delight for our children during a hot day. During renovations, remnants of the original fort were uncovered in the square.

Over the years, the castle has served various roles, from a noble residence to a prison and even a textile factory. Today, it houses the Museo Arqueológico e Histórico de Elche (MAHE), where you can delve into the city’s history. You can also see a replica of the Lady of Elche, a famous bust found near Elche but housed in a museum in Madrid.

Palau d'Altamira Elche

#4 Baños Árabes—The Arab Baths

The Baños Árabes in Elche are a remnant of the Moorish period. Located strategically near the main mosque and the La Lucentina city gate, they served as a place where travelers could cleanse and refresh before entering the walled city.

Today, these baths are hidden in the basement of the 13th-century Convento de la Merced. While we didn’t find the baths particularly impressive, the entry fee is only one euro. For this small amount, you can explore the different baths—hot, cold, and lukewarm—and afterwards, visit the old convent courtyard now built over the baths.

Convento de la Merced Elche

#5 Huerto del Cura

Tucked away in the vast Palmeral palm grove, you’ll find the serene botanical space of Huerto del Cura. The standout feature here is the “Imperial Palm” (La Palmera Imperial), a unique tree with several trunks sprouting from a single root system. The name “imperial” commemorates the visit of Empress Elizabeth of Austria, also known as Sissi, who was truly taken by the tree’s regal aura. This majestic palm is the centerpiece of the garden, encircled by a diverse array of exotic plant life including cacti and subtropical fruit trees like pomegranates and oranges.

Additionally, Huerto del Cura offers an array of sculptures, including a replica of the famed Iberian statue of the Lady of Elche and a bust of James I the Conqueror. The garden is also adorned with scenic ponds and fountains. While access to the broader Palmeral is free, entrance to Huerto del Cura is priced at €6.50.

Elche Huerto del Cura

#6 Torre de la Calahorra

Adjacent to the Basílica de Santa María stands the historical Torre de la Calahorra, a monument steeped in the Moorish past of Elche. This tower, dating back to the 12th century, is one of the city’s oldest landmarks. Originally constructed by the Moors as part of the city’s fortifications, it served as a defensive point guarding the main entrance to Elche from the Alicante road. Previously standing 25 meters taller, the tower was severely damaged in an 1829 earthquake, resulting in the loss of its upper parts and reducing its height to the current 15 meters.

Inside the tower, you can view frescoes that showcase panoramic views of early 20th-century Elche. On the ground floor, a notably decorated room features Egyptian motifs and Freemason symbols, marking the establishment of a Freemason society here in 1858. Admission is €2, but the tower can be visited for free on Sundays.

#7 Elche Town Hall

Positioned in Plaça de Baix, the Elche Town Hall is a striking feature of the cityscape. Its architectural story begins in the 15th century with the Torre del Consell, which was once linked directly to the medieval city walls. This tower now acts as a passageway from Plaça de Baix to the nearby covered market hall.

The building has seen numerous modifications over the centuries, including a transformation into a Renaissance palace and later expansions adding more wings. A particular highlight is the Vetla tower, also known as the Calendura tower, topped by a 1572 clock. Every quarter-hour and hour, the wooden figures Calendura and Calendureta strike the bell to mark the time.

Ayuntamiento Elche

#8 Mercat Central Market Hall

At the heart of Elche near the town hall, the Mercat Central is a vibrant covered market that brings together local products from the surrounding Camp d’Elx area.

With 150 stalls, the market boasts a rich selection of fresh vegetables and fruits, premium meats, deli products, and seafood brought in from Santa Pola. Specialty items such as salted fish, nuts, olives, and locally produced baked goods are also available. To round out the market experience, there’s a bar and café for visitors to enjoy.

In front of the market hall, at Plaça de la Fruita, stands a protected archaeological site thought to be remnants of a Moorish bathhouse, discovered in 2014. An informational display provides details about the bathhouse’s historical context and what it once looked like.

Mercat Central Elche

#9 Museo del Belén and Other Museums of Elche

Elche is proud to host several museums, including the notable Museo del Belén we visited. The museum is centrally located at Plaça de la Fruita. This museum is open to the public at no charge and features an intriguing array of dioramas that depict nativity scenes, significant biblical events, and various views of Elche, spread out over several floors.

The city is also home to the Archaeological and History Museum of Elche , housed in the Palacio de Altamira. This museum provides a thorough look at Elche’s development from prehistoric times to today, with interactive exhibits and archaeological finds. The Museo del Palmeral highlights the agricultural significance and cultural importance of Elche’s vast palm groves, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Visitors can discover the methods of palm cultivation and their societal impact throughout history.

The Paleontological Museum offers insights into the region’s ancient plants and animals, with fossils that take you back to a time long before humans. Situated in the basilica, the Museo de la Virgen focuses on the religious traditions of Elche, particularly the annual celebrations of the Virgin Mary, including the famous Misteri d’Elx performances.

Lastly, the Museum of Contemporary Art provides a space for modern artists, featuring rotating exhibitions of contemporary works.

Museo del Belén Elche

#10 Sendero del Palmeral

Encircling Elche and weaving through the city’s lush palm gardens, the Sendero del Palmeral (or Ruta del Palmeral) offers a scenic trail ideal for both biking and walking. Given its length of just over 10 kilometers and the fact that we had two young children with us, we chose to explore the route by bicycle.

The journey starts at Huerto de San Plácido, where the Palm Grove Museum resides within a charming 19th-century house. The path meanders alongside historic irrigation channels, notably the Acequia Mayor del Pantano, which has been nourishing the palm groves for centuries. The route skirts the Huerto del Cura and winds past the old city schools of the Salesian College, continuing through various ‘huertos’ (orchards), including Rogeta, Tia Casimira, and Felip. A particularly beautiful part of the trail runs alongside a deeply carved riverbed, now mostly dry and spanned by multiple bridges.

Navigating the trail proved a bit challenging, as the signage was not always clear. There are plenty of signs along the path, but they seemed either absent or discreetly positioned at several crucial junctions.

Things to Do Outside Elche: Hike to the El Pantano de Elche Waterfall

For those eager to delve deeper into the natural beauty near Elche, the short hike to the El Pantano de Elche waterfall provides an enchanting escape. This historic reservoir, just 5 kilometers north of Elche, ranks among Spain’s oldest active reservoirs, its origins stretching back to the 17th century. The dam has been a cornerstone in the regional irrigation system and plays a vital role in maintaining the iconic palm landscapes of the city.

The hike to the waterfall is short and straightforward, making it perfectly suitable for families with small children. The path leads directly to the dam, where you’re greeted with stunning views of the reservoir and lush surroundings. The most breathtaking sight is the wide waterfall that spills over the dam’s edges. If you’re up for more adventure, the trail continues beyond the dam, weaving through the diverse landscapes that offer various hiking opportunities.

Additionally, the location includes a parking area that’s ideal for RVs and campervans, positioning it as a prime spot for wild camping ( Park4Night #170605 ). We enjoyed two wonderfully serene and pleasant nights here in our camper.

The Top 10 Things to See and Do in Elche, Valencia

The Basilica of Santa Maria, Elche. Photo courtesy of Elche tourist board.

The Valencian city of Elche is a short drive from Alicante and makes a popular day-trip for holidaymakers on the Costa Blanca. Not just any old Spanish town, Elche is famous for palm trees, shoemaking and a very special church, and there’s much more to see. Here are our tips for making the most of your visit.

Basilica of santa maria.

You can’t miss this local landmark and famous religious site. With its two blue domes and extravagant baroque entrance, there’s no doubt it’s exceptionally beautiful. It was originally built on the site of a ruined mosque, but the church we see today is mostly Baroque, remodelled in the 17th century. It’s known for the Misterio de Elche play, which takes place every year in the basilica.

Misterio de Elche

If you’re visiting in August the Misterio de Elche (Mystery Play of Elche), held on the 14th and 15th every year, is an absolute must-see. The Basilica of Santa Maria in Elche is the only Catholic church in the world allowed to put on this special theatrical and musical performance, which dates back to the 15th century. It depicts the ascension of the Virgin Mary to heaven, in which the person playing Mary is lifted through a hole in the ceiling by a piece of original (and carefully maintained) 15th-century machinery called the Deus ex machina. Mary is later crowned in an elaborate ceremony accompanied by music and song in a mix of ancient Valencian and Latin. The tradition is greatly loved by locals, and you’ll see plenty of tears in the audience. It’s also been recognised by UNESCO for its cultural importance.

Museo Arqueológico y de Historia de Elche

Discover the history of Elche in an enjoyable and interactive exhibiton at the Palace of Altamira. The restored 12th-century palace, originally built as an aristocratic family home and later used as a prison during the Spanish Civil War, has its own fascinating history. You’ll also see a great collection of antiques and artefacts spanning the length of the city’s history. Don’t miss one of the city’s most iconic sights, La Dama de Elche (The Lady of Elche), a statue dating back to the 4th century BC and discovered here in 1897. Her history and purpose is unknown, though many believe the figure was part of a funeral urn or larger monument. The original is kept in a museum in Madrid, but while the people of Elche await her return there’s an exact replica on show in the museum’s Keep tower.

Walk the palm groves

Elche is world famous for being home to some 200,000 palm trees of many different types, in various parks in and around the town. Follow the 2.5 kilometre-long Ruta del Palmeral (Palm Grove Route) which starts and ends at the Huerto de San Plácido park, near the Museo del Palmeral (Palm Grove Museum. The trail is clearly marked and easy to follow, passing the most important areas and famous trees.

Palm trees in Elche, Spain. Photo

Parque Municipal

The Town Park encompasses a large part of the palm tree forest, plus the Palm Plaiting workshop. Here, all the palms to be carried in Palm Sunday processions are crafted using traditional methods in the old mill and granary building, which has Arab origins. The park also has a windmill, the Park Museum and the Rotonda, an open-air theatre.

Huerto del Cura

The Priest’s Orchard, part of the Ruta del Palmeral, has been declared a National Historic Garden thanks to its outstanding beauty and important history. With Arab, Mediterranean and local influences, the large garden features palm tree specimens from all over the world in an unusual arrangement. The park’s star attraction is the 168-year-old Imperial Palm Tree.

Try some Muscatel

This sweet local wine is something you must try when in Elche. Of course you can sip a glass after dinner at any restaurant in town, but if you want to try the best around and find out how it’s made you can also join a wine-tasting tour. One especially interesting place to visit is the family-run Bodegas Faelo , a more unusual organic winery where you can also learn about the fascinating method of lunar cultivation.

Shoe shopping

Elche is home to more than half of all Spain’s shoemakers, and with the chance to buy top quality shoes from big names at bargain prices there’s absolutely no reason not to indulge your inner Carrie Bradshaw. Here you’ll find the biggest shoe outlet village in Europe, the Elche Business Park. Another great place to shop with seemingly endless choice is the Salvador Artesano factory shop, where you can take a tour around the manufacturing area, starting with a glass of local muscatel wine. Serious shoe lovers will also want to see the Pikolinos shoemaking museum, telling the story of Spanish footwear all the way from espadrilles to 21st-century fashion.

Rio Safari Park Elche

One of the Costa Blanca’s favourite days out is just a short drive from Elche. The Rio Safari Park has all kinds of attractions, from a sea lion show to camel rides or feeding the hippos and giraffes, with appropriate food for sale at the park shop. The farm animals section with cows, pigs, goats, horses and sheep is always popular, too.

Hit the beach

Elche is just a few kilometres from the coast and there are plenty of great beaches to choose from. One of the most popular is Los Arenales Del Sol; found to the north of the town of Santa Pola, it’s a long, white sandy beach perfect for swimming, with plenty of snack bars. To the south, the beaches of El Pinet, La Marina and Les Pesqueres-El Rebollo are also popular.
