Podcast: All Access Star Trek Dances Through “Subspace Rhapsody” With Songwriters Kay Hanley and Tom Polce

Dang. Why the heck did I pay for this stuff?

Because it was fabulous, and you got to see it a year ago. :-)

And because subscribing tells Paramount that Star Trek earns them money, so they should make more of it.

And it’s still great!

Yes, it certainly was! I’m keeping my sub.

Paramount knows Star Trek makes money, and it seems that they don’t actually have enough Trek ready to release this year.

Star Trek and the Yellowstone franchise accounted for about half of Paramount+ demand in 2022 (according to Parrot Analytics).

So, yes that are going to want to maximize the potential for SNW to pull in subscribers in this financial quarter. They’ve already put it on PlutoTV as a feature for the past few weeks, this will boost exposure further.

Paramount is in a sticky wicket in terms of its release schedule given their next Yellowstone release is far away.

(Bass Reeves was in production last winter but doesn’t sound as though it’s wrapped, Tulsa King S2 production is reportedly on hold.)

They’re adding in a lot of great movie content with 4 Mission Impossible movies coming back in the US and the rest of the Trek movies too, but that’s the kind of content that holds subscribers more than motivates sign ups.

Merging in Showtime on the premium subscription gives added Yellowjackets S2 and a bigger catalogue, but it’s still thin in terms of new content to come.

Can you imagine what the popularity of a Yellowstone-Star Trek crossover would be?

Star Trek: Yellowstone

Huge…I’d love to see Taylor Sheridan’s take on Trek…

So would I, actually.

Actually all the Mission Impossible movies have been there for over a year now. A few just disappear every now and again like the Star Trek movies.

I honestly think P+ is a great site today, but it doesn’t have the pull like the big boys, at least not yet.

Wait, they’re making a Bass Reeves series? Cool!

Peculiar question indeed ….

Eventually everything makes it’s way to being available to viewable free in some form or another. Tho I will admit this was rather quick given how successful Picard Season 3 was. Maybe the Writer’s Strike has them spooked?

I wish you had waited — because then we would not have had to read this rather asinine post of yours today since you would not have seen it yet. ;-)

Paramount+ is desperate for more viewers and has to do what it takes to get more people on board. It’s obviously smart. They used to just show the first Trek show in a season on YT. Now they are showing the entire season.

If they want more paying subscribers, they should not have started using DRM. That lost them our business, and we’ve been paying for the top tier since a week before Discovery premiered. I’ll sign up again the moment they ditch the horrid practise.

What’s DRM

It’s an acronym for Digital Rights Management. It’s a way of encrypting data so that it can’t be copied and passed around (except that people usually find a way to break it).

Ohhh okay. Thank you.

I mean, you don’t give the crowing jewel away like this for free in my book. Lower Decks and Picard, sure, but not SNW, Prodigy and DSC

It’s just a short-lived promotion to drive subscriptions.

Not a permanent give away.

It’s the same reason why it’s been running as a special promotion this month on PlutoTV in several markets.

As well as the reason why Into Darkness was the CBS Friday feature movie last weekend.

If Paramount+ is dependent on the Trek and Yellowstone franchises for its base subscribers, growing the Trek audience is existential.

SNW is a great entry into a franchise that’s got an intimidatingly deep catalogue at this point – based on the number of ‘Where do I start?’ posts on other platforms.

Makes sense to do whatever they can to pull in new viewers, and YouTube draws a younger demographic while PlutoTV and linear pull older.

This is such a weird troll. There’s nothing original about Strange New Worlds. It just has fantastic visuals including Anson Mount’s magnificent hair. It’s the most expensive James Cawley fan film ever made.

They want to get people hooked for Season two I assume.

This is more proof Paramount+ is probably not in a great spot. But whatever drives more interest. And it will be great for the Trek fans who has not watched SNW yet because they don’t want to pay to watch it, at least in America. Maybe it will convince a few to subscribe for season 2.

All that said, why not just make certain seasons free on the site itself and not just YT? A way for people to check out the site and see what else is there?

I should make clear for fans who simply can’t afford to pay for it as well. Why it’s nice to see some of the new shows air on Pluto too.

I watched the first season twice, and enjoyed it much more the second time. The only hang-ups for me are the way they play fast and loose with canon (which I’m basically disregarding so it won’t bother me), the current-day phrases and language they use (‘you got this,’ etc.) and the casting of JTK, which to me is abysmal. It’s a fun show to watch, but to me it doesn’t jibe with the prime timeline. Just one (old) guy’s opinion.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: how to watch, episodes and everything we know

Where are Captain Pike and the Starship Enterprise crew boldly going next?

Anson Mount in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is just one of many Paramount Plus entries in the streaming service's expansive Star Trek universe. Other Star Trek shows on the streaming service include Star Trek: Discovery , Picard , Star Trek: Lower Decks and Prodigy .

Following the success of Star Trek: Discovery and the popularity among Trekkies of a certain Captain Pike (though we suspect actor Anson Mount’s jawline has much to do with it), the Star Trek studio finally gave in to fan demand and greenlit this latest spin-off.

Strange New Worlds has now completed its initial mission (season), but here's everything you need to know about the new series? Hit it.

How to watch Star Trek: Strange New Worlds

All episodes of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds are available to stream exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US and UK. The Paramount Plus original series is available to all subscribers to the streaming service, whether they are signed up for the ad-supported or ad-free version.

When is the next Star Trek: Strange New World episode?

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episode 10, the season 1 finale, debuts on Paramount Plus in the US on July 7.

For UK Paramount Plus subscribers, episode 5 is now available on the streaming service.

Other Star Trek shows like Star Trek: Discovery ’s fourth season , are moving from their original UK home on Netflix to Paramount Plus.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episodes

Here are the synopses for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds episodes:

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 1, "Strange New Worlds" "When one of Pike’s officers goes missing while on a secret mission for Starfleet, Pike has to come out of self-imposed exile. He must navigate how to rescue his officer, while struggling with what to do with the vision of the future he’s been given."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 2, "Children of the Comet" "While on a survey mission, the  U.S.S. Enterprise  discovers a comet is going to strike an inhabited planet. They try to re-route the comet, only to find that an ancient alien relic buried on the comet’s icy surface is somehow stopping them. As the away team try to unlock the relic’s secrets, Pike and Number One deal with a group of zealots who want to prevent the  U.S.S. Enterprise  from interfering."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 3, "Ghosts of Illyria" "The  U.S.S. Enterprise  encounters a contagion that ravages the ship. One by one, the entire crew is incapacitated except for Number One, Una Chin-Riley, who must now confront a secret she’s been hiding as she races to find a cure."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 4, "Memento Mori" "While on a routine supply mission to a colony planet, the  U.S.S. Enterprise  comes under an attack from an unknown malevolent force. Pike brings all his heart and experience to bear in facing the crisis, but the security officer warns him that the enemy cannot be dealt with by conventional Starfleet means." In this episodes, Star Trek fans were re-introduced to an iconic villain .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 5, "Spock Amok" "It’s a comedy of manners when Spock has a personal visit in the middle of Spock and Captain Pike’s crucial negotiations with an unusual alien species."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 6, "Lift Us Where Suffering Cannot Reach" "A threat to an idyllic planet reunites Captain Pike with the lost love of his life. To protect her and a scientific holy child from a conspiracy, Pike offers his help and is forced to face unresolved feelings of his past."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 7, "The Serene Squall" "While on a dangerous humanitarian mission, the crew of the  U.S.S. Enterprise  stumbles into a harrowing game of leverage with the quadrant’s deadliest space pirate."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 8, "The Elysian Fields" "The Enterprise becomes stuck in a nebula that is home to an alien consciousness that traps the crew in a fairy tale."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 9, "All Those Who Wander" "The  U.S.S. Enterprise  crew comes face-to-face with their demons – and scary monsters too – when their landing party is stranded on a barren planet with a ravenous enemy."

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 1 episode 10, "A Quality of Mercy" "In the season one finale, just as Captain Pike thinks he’s figured out how to escape his fate, he’s visited by his future self, who shows him the consequences of his actions."

Will there be a Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2?

Affirmative. In January 2022, five months before season 1 had even aired, Paramount confirmed a season 2 was going ahead. Only a few months later they assigned their Captain Kirk ( The Vampire Diaries ’ Paul Wesley) and began shooting.

We don't know yet when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 2 is going to premiere on Paramount Plus.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds plot

While Strange New Worlds is an all new adventure in the Star Trek universe for the uninitiated (unlike Picard for example), there’s a bit of background it’s good to be aware of. The show’s main man, Captain Pike, was Star Trek ’s very first captain, appearing in a long-unseen pilot episode of The Original Series entitled "The Cage" (the episode finished filming in 1965 but was not seen by audiences until 1986, via home video) set in the year 2254.

William Shatner’s iconic Captain James T. Kirk then took over, with Pike (having suffered a debilitating accident) popping up again mid-way through season 1 for a farewell double-bill appearance. Shenanigans with fan favorite Lieutenant Spock ensue, leaving Pike to live out a pain-free life on the planet Talos IV from the year 2267 onwards.

How is this relevant? Well, Strange New Worlds takes place in the years between Pike’s adventures in Discovery ’s second season, circa 2257, and his final days in The Original Series , so there’s a lot of ground to cover and not a lot of precedent, which we think bodes well for some out-of-the-borg-cube thinking.

Series co-creator Akiva Goldsman confirmed Strange New Worlds will take on a near-fully episodic approach (heads up The Next Generation and Voyager fans), confirming there will be, "room to meet new aliens, see new ships, visit new cultures." The one thing that will break the episodic structure? Character arcs.

Star Trek

The poster and trailer show Pike’s transition from his idyllic home in the Mojave desert to the bridge of the Enterprise. We know his two trusty subordinates from Discovery — Science Officer Spock and First Officer 'Number One' (real name Una Chin-Riley) — will be by his side.

Some iconic legacy characters return here too, including Nurse Chapel, who assisted Dr. McCoy in The Original Series sickbay and Nyota Uhura (famously played by Nichelle Nichols in The Original Series and Thandi Newton in the alternate timeline movies of 2009, 2013 and 2016).

There’s also a new addition we’re particularly excited about, Chief of Security La’an Noonien-Singh, whose surname will trigger Trekkie memories of Ceti eels (think hard-skinned killer leeches) and one of the best space showdowns in Star Trek — perhaps even sci-fi film — history. Whether or not she’s related to Khan Noonien Singh, a genetically-engineered superhuman and the show’s most memorable villain, is yet to be seen, but it’s certainly a thrilling prospect (for the avoidance of doubt, we’re referring to Khan in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan , not the alternate timeline Khan of Star Trek Into Darkness ).

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds cast

How Strange New Worlds' "Obi-Wan" Improves Nichelle Nichols' Uhura Explained By DS9 Star

I want strange new worlds to break star trek canon & save captain pike, star trek's forgotten show with only 22 episodes is the franchise's 3rd best (according to rotten tomatoes).

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 's Nana Visitor hails Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' Lt. Erica Ortegas (Melissa Navia), a character Nana says Star Trek has waited for since the 1960s Releasing October 1st, Visitor's first book, Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek , contains in depth profiles of Star Trek 's vast universe of female characters. Nana interviewed women involved in Star Trek in front of and behind the camera, as well as real-world scientists, soldiers, and astronauts who call Star Trek' s female heroes their inspirations.

Lt. Erica Ortegas is a new character in Star Trek: Strange New World s , but one who has roots in Star Trek 's original, rejected pilot, "The Cage." In 1964, Gene Roddenberry's first crack at Star Trek centered on the Starship Enterprise led by Captain Christopher Pike (Jeffrey Hunter), aided by Number One (Majel Barrett Roddenberry) and Mr. Spock (Leonard Nimoy). NBC ordered a second pilot and for Star Trek to be recast. It took 58 years for Captain Pike's version of the Enterprise to return in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , which boasts reimagined versions of "The Cage's" characters, including Erica Ortegas, the helmsman of the Starship Enterprise.

Nana Visitor Explains How Star Trek’s Original Pilot Concept Became Strange New Worlds’ Ortegas

Erica ortegas has roots in a scrapped star trek pilot.

In an excerpt from Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek shared exclusively with Screen Rant , Nana Visitor describes how Gene Roddenberry's first concept for Star Trek 's pilot , José Ortega, morphed into José Tyler (Peter Duryaa), and finally, decades later, into Lt. Erica Ortegas in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. Visitor also accurately charts why the Starship Enterprise's pilot had to be a man in the 1960s and how this has changed today. Read Visitor's quote below:

Star Trek has been waiting since the ’60s for Erica Ortegas. José Ortega never made it out of Gene Roddenberry’s notes. By the time Trek’s first pilot, “The Cage,” was filmed, he had morphed into José Tyler, who was very blond and blue eyed. In fact, the entire cast was scrapped save Leonard Nimoy for the next–ultimately successful–pilot, leaving it for the best part of sixty years and the casting of Melissa Navia to give the character new life. Strange New Worlds’s Erica Ortegas (yes, there’s an s on the end, and yes, plenty of Latinos spell their name that way, says Melissa) has links to the past but drives us straight into the future. Sixty years ago, it seemed inevitable that the Enterprise’s pilot would be a man. In those days, the characteristics of a hotshot pilot seemed fundamentally male, and the person flying the ship was bound to be inspired by John Glenn or Neil Armstrong. Discovery had already put Emily Coutts’s Detmer at the helm. Strange New Worlds would double down on that. The breakdown for her character described a Latinx pilot, a soldier who could handle a gun and crack a joke, was capable and confident. Her exuberant “abso-frickin-lutely” while flying the ship demonstrates that she isn’t caught up in her head like José, worrying about instruments and calculations, but piloting from passion. The character is free from any kind of stereotypes about performative femininity or limiting ideas about what it means to be a woman, and that’s something that Melissa seems to share.

Nana Visitor interviewed Melissa Navia for Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek , and, no doubt, Lt. Erica Ortegas' chapter will prove fascinating and insightful. In 2024, female Star Trek pilots are now par for the course. Like Ortegas, Emily Coutts' Lt. Commander Kayla Detmer flies the USS Discovery on Star Trek: Discovery and Ashlei Sharpe Chestnut plays Ensign Sidney La Forge, the USS Titan-A's pilot in Star Trek: Picard season 3. At the end of Star Trek: Picard season 3 , Sidney joined Ortegas as a female pilot of the Enterprise, becoming a Lieutenant and the helmsman of the USS Enterprise-G.

Star Trek Fans Have Embraced Strange New Worlds’ Lt. Ortegas

#mortegas is a call to action.

Lt. Erica Ortegas has proven to be a beloved fan-favorite on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . The Starship Enterprise's snarky hotshot pilot has endeared herself to audiences. Thanks to Melissa Navia's effervescence and Strange New Worlds ' clever writers and directors, Erica is hugely entertaining, whether she's bantering with Captain Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) on the bridge or tormenting the time traveler Ensign Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid) in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' crossover . Fans have clamored to learn more about Ortegas' past and what makes her tick, spreading the hashtag #Mortegas on social media to urge Strange New Worlds to tell more Erica stories.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 promises more Lt. Erica Ortegas. Strange New Worlds season 3 kicks off with Erica and some of her Enterprise crewmates kidnapped by the Gorn. Considering how one of Ortegas' wishes was to take a break from the Enterprise's bridge and join a landing party mission , her Gorn abduction becomes a nightmare scenario for Erica. However, that's just a hint of what's to come next for Lt. Erica Ortegas in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , one of the pivotal women spotlighted in Nana Visitor's Star Trek: Open a Channel: A Woman's Trek.

Captain James T. Kirk himself has just shared a new exciting update on when filming will begin for Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . While the wait for Season 3 is beginning to feel awfully long given that huge Season 2 cliffhanger, this new update is pacifying, as it means that the wait between Season 3 and Season 4 will be relatively shorter. In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Paul Wesley who plays the iconic Captain Kirk the character originated by William Shatner , shared a bit of his filming schedule for his upcoming projects, revealing when filming will begin, and it is sooner than the previous projections given by Captain Christopher Pike actor, Anson Mount .

In an earlier report , series star, Mount shared that filming for Season 4 will begin next spring, writing: “We’ll see you again in the spring when Star Trek: Strange New Worlds goes back into production for Season 4!" However, it appears there’s been a slight schedule adjustment as filming will now begin a bit sooner with Wesley telling THR that production will start early next year in late winter. “I’m going off to shoot season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in February,” he said.

Wesley’s interview with THR was primarily about his career where he shared how he juggles time between set life and non-acting commitments. While discussing his Brother's Bond Bourbon brand of bourbon whiskey co-owned with The Vampire Diaries co-star Ian Somerhalder , Wesley shared that the other Salvatore brother will be handling things while he’s off to shoot the next chapter of Strange New Worlds . He said: “For example, I’m going off to shoot season four of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds in February, and they know that. So, I’ve accounted for that time, and I’m committed to that, and Ian’s gonna take over some of my duties, and I have other team members.”

What Are Other Upcoming Star Trek Projects?

A few Star Trek projects have recently reached their concluding chapters, but there’s more trek to look forward to as the beloved franchise continues to expand with more exciting additions. Up next is the fifth and final season of the adult animated series, Star Trek: Lower Decks set to premiere on October 24, 2024. The young-adult-centered series, Starfleet Academy , is currently in production in Toronto. No release date has been fixed yet, but it is known that the exciting new series is set in the Star Trek universe's 32nd century, just like Seasons 2 - 3 of Discovery .

There’s also a new feature film, Section 31 on the horizon, set for release sometime in 2025. The new feature will be directed by Andor ’s Toby Haynes from a script by Seth Grahame-Smith . Set decades before the events of J.J. Abrams ' Star Trek (2009), Section 31 will star Michelle Yeoh and Chris Pine .

Strange New Worlds Season 3 will pick right up from where Season 2's cliffhanger left things and will arrive Paramount+ on a yet undecided date in 2025. Stay tuned for future updates.
