Tanzania is a land of extremes. Home to Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, and its deepest and largest lakes, the country has the world’s largest game reserve and one of the most spectacular natural phenomenons in the world – the perpetual Great Migration on the Serengeti plains.

Famed as the birthplace of safari and the setting for ‘Out of Africa’ – Kenya inspires exploration and adventure on the wide African savannah. Visit the Great Rift Valley with its soda lakes and flamingos, enjoy spectacular trekking on Mount Kenya and a host of wildlife-packed game reserves.

East Africa’s Indian Ocean shores are made for postcards. In addition to mainland beach destinations, the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba are the perfect spots to wrap up an East African safari. Sea life, rich turquoise waters, and warm and welcoming people lure you into another world.

Style: While Albatros do offer two scheduled group departures , they specialize in tailor-made safaris for FITs and small groups featuring a variety of properties, often a combination of independently owned camps/lodges with those from property groups like Sanctuary, &Beyond, Elewana, Nomad, and more. As an independent DMC, what differentiates Albatros is their ability to “chop and change” properties (as Jules likes to say!), thereby designing truly tailor-made itineraries which will differentiate your proposal from other agents who simply sell the property circuits.

Vehicles: Albatros takes great pride in their operations, including their fleet of custom-built Land Cruisers . Designed with both guest comfort and safety in mind, the vehicles feature extra large front windows for better viewing, pop-tops and seating for a maximum of seven guests, meaning each guest has a window seat. Inverters for charging cameras and devices are de rigeur , as are fridges for cool beverages. Steps make it easier for less mobile travelers to enter and exit the vehicles, and white-label branding is available should you require it.

Service & Guiding: The first smiling face your guests will see if visiting East Africa with Albatros will likely be that of Nelson Reginald or Otieno Odhiambo. Nelson (Tanzania) and Otieno (Kenya) are Albatros’ “Client Liaison Officers” and they are the first to welcome guests on arrival in either Arusha or Nairobi and they also check in with the guides/guests throughout the safari. Albatros also has a firm focus on the quality of their guides. Their home base is Arusha but they split time between the Tanzania and Kenya offices. Albatros has been awarded a Silver Eco-rating from Eco Tourism Kenya. The Silver Eco-rating is an intermediary level in Eco-rating Certification that is awarded to facilities that demonstrate innovation – progress towards achieving excellence in environmental conservation, responsible resource use and socio-economic investment.

Albatros supports the Kiliamatembo School in Tanzania. Their support includes sponsorship of a school hygiene project, development and renovation of sporting facilities, library growth and maintenance, a water management program, a agriculture conservation and soil erosion control project, conservation education and projects, classroom renovations and improvement, a tree planting scheme and more.

The tour operator that’s a little different

Albatros Travel and Safaris (Pty), Limited, Registration Number: 1996/000235/07 is part of Albatros Travel A/S, a Danish travel company founded in 1986 by the biologist and writer Søren Rasmussen. Initially we only offered tours to Africa but over the years this has expanded to include worldwide destinations, with a particular emphasis on ecotourism in Greenland and Africa. We also offer cruises and arrange adventure marathon holidays in challenging environments, such as along the top of the Great Wall of China and on the Polar Ice Cap. Furthermore, we own a majority share in a cruise ship, the Clipper Adventurer, which has an ice strengthened hull and is capable of taking up to 122 passengers to the remote Arctic regions.

From our beginnings in a small Copenhagen office, we now have travel centers spanning the world. Aside from our head office in Copenhagen, Albatros has four offices across Europe, as well as in three African countries, Greenland and, China. Despite our expansion, we retain close links with our tour leaders, guides and partners, meaning we are still able to offer you the same high level of quality service.

We offer scheduled and tailor-made tours to countries in southern and eastern Africa. What this means is that you can either purchase one of our ready-made tour packages that commences on a given date or you can contact us with your travel ideas and let us do the rest. You might, for example, have a rough idea that you would like take your family to visit Cape Town and the Garden Route, go on a Safari in Namibia and finish off exploring Kruger in your own vehicle. Along the way you want to go whale watching and hot air ballooning, but you’re not sure where.

We will then use our travel expertise and extensive regional networks to put together a flexible itinerary for you, possibly making suggestions for other sights or features we think you might also enjoy. We’ve been doing this for 26 years and we love the creative challenge – so you can rest assured that we’ll do our best to make your travel dreams come true. You can change elements of it as you wish until you’re happy with the result.
