With the arrival of iOS 15, Safari for iPhone and iPad gained proper extensions. Apple has taken the same curated App Store approach as it did with Safari for Mac, vastly improving Safari's web browsing capabilities.

Here are some of the highlights, and a brief overview of how extensions work on iOS and iPadOS.

Extensions for the Safari browser on iPhone and iPad are managed using the App Store. You can search for new extensions as you would any other app, and updates are managed by the App Store and can be applied automatically too.

You'll even find a dedicated Safari Extensions category in the App Store app by tapping the Apps tab then scrolling down to "Top Categories" and tapping See All > Safari Extensions.

When you have enabled one or more extensions you will see a small icon in the address bar that looks like a puzzle piece. Tapping on this will show active extensions and a "Manage Extensions" option where you can enable and disable extensions quickly.

Due to Apple's careful approach to privacy in iOS , expect to be asked to grant permission to certain websites or services. Some apps require "Access" to every website they are designed to work with, while others may ask to filter your traffic if they are designed to block certain types of content.

You can go to Settings > Safari > Extensions to see a list of currently installed extensions, what each has access to, and any privacy disclosures. You can also give an extension full access to all websites here, which gets rid of the frequent permissions pop-ups.

You should make sure you fully understand the risks of allowing an app developer to access this information. A similar comparison can be made to third party keyboards , which may require "Full Access" and thus be able to store or transmit anything that is typed.

Many websites now support dark themes either with a toggle or by detecting your device's current settings. Many still don't, and that's a problem when you're trying to browse at night. Turn Off the Lights is one such free extension that attempts to remedy this.

On Safari, the app works by adding a semi-transparent dark overlay. This has the effect of dimming page content without inverting colors, so things appear much dimmer. The benefit of this approach is that it leaves page styles alone which means you're less likely to run into problems with page styles or readability.

It's not foolproof and some websites resist the extension, while the overlay can be a little temperamental at times. It also lacks the customization that you'll find on the desktop version.

Nitefall is a good alternative if Turn Off the Lights falls short. It's also free but can only be used on a limited number (25) of websites. It has three dark themes, support for maps, and site-specific settings but if you want to use it on more websites you'll need to upgrade for a one-off fee of $3.99.

Do you have a nasty tab habit? Culling hundreds of tabs using Safari's tiled view is tedious even on the latest devices. It's not possible to read the full website name or URL, and many older tab previews will be purged. Startpage.ai makes this process much easier.

Once you've set new tabs to open with Startpage.ai you'll see a neat list of all current tabs, with the most recently used at the top. Super Agent is one extension that can help. Install the extension then set your cookie preferences in the app and let Super Agent take care of the rest. The extension will action your preferences on a large number of websites (though not all websites are supported).

Cookies are split into three sections: advertising, functional, and performance. Any that don't fit these categories are automatically blocked. There's no subscription, and the accompanying app makes it easy to manage your preferences.

Previously a plug-in for the desktop version of Safari, PiPifier does one thing and it does it well: restoring picture-in-picture functionality to videos across the web. Apple added this handy feature to Safari in iOS 14, but it hasn't always worked everywhere. Well... "world" might be a bit generous right now. There aren't a ton of extensions available yet, as companies are still developing them and figuring out how to make their desktop extensions viable with the smaller screen and different web browsing behavior on mobile. Still, there are plenty of great extensions out already and certainly plenty more to come.

(Side note: Yes, there are some  Android  browsers that use extensions already, although the default Chrome browser isn't one of them. You can use apps like the Kiwi browser or  Brave browser  on your Android phone to use extensions. However, most, if not all, of the extensions in those cases haven't been optimized for mobile, so your experiences could be all over the place. As for iPhone and iPad users, this is truly the first opportunity to use browser extensions — and these extensions are built specifically for mobile.)

Here's a full walkthrough on how to install Safari browser extensions on your iPhone or iPad, starting with how to find them and going all the way through how to use these iOS Safari extensions on a day-to-day basis.

Where to find iOS Safari extensions on your iPhone or iPad

There are two primary ways you can find Safari browser extensions: by going through Safari settings or by searching in the App Store. They each have their own merits, although we recommend the Settings route to start for a more curated and thorough experience.

Our recommended method for finding iOS Safari extensions is through the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad. Go to Settings > Safari > Extensions and click "More Extensions." If you're not seeing the "More Extensions" option, it's because you're not running iOS 15+ — you're probably still on iOS 14 or earlier.

From that screen, you can see Apple's curated lists of the best Safari web extensions for your iPhone or iPad as well as the lists of the Top Free and Top Paid extensions.

This is good for finding more obscure extensions but, oddly, worse for finding some of the bigger names; we found some Safari app extensions, for whatever reason, didn't appear in the search results.

How to install Safari extensions on your iPhone or iPad

The first step to adding a Safari app extension is just like adding any app to your phone or tablet: Just hit the "GET" button (or the button with the price on it) and the extension will download and install. From there, click "OPEN." That will take you to the extension's companion app. In some cases, the app will walk you through the extension installation process — because, right now, it's actually a bit of a labyrinth to install Safari extensions.

In case the app  doesn't  take you through the process, here's what you need to do.

Go to any browser tab in Safari and tap on the "AA" symbol on the left side of the URL bar.

Tap the puzzle piece next to "Manage Extensions."

Tap the slider to turn on the extension.

Next up, you'll need to grant permissions to the Safari browser extension you're setting up. You need to be running iOS 15 or later to use Safari web extensions on your iPhone or iPad. In fact, if extensions aren't working, it's likely because you have an older version of iOS installed.

You can see what version of iOS you're using by going to Settings > General > About and looking at "Software Version." If you're using an older iOS, you can run an iPhone iOS update or iPad iOS update by going to Settings > General > Software Update. 

What iPhone/iPad do I need for Safari browser extensions?

You'll need an iPhone or iPad capable of running iOS 15 to use iOS Safari extensions. That means you'll need an iPhone 6s or newer to use Safari extensions iPhone style; and an iPad Air 2 or newer to use Safari extensions iPad style. 

Do browser extensions work on Firefox for iOS? 

While extensions currently work for Safari on iOS as of iOS 15, extensions are not currently available for Firefox on iOS. However it is possible we could get extensions for the Firefox browser on iOS one day — they might just look different than the extensions on Firefox desktop. Apple has locked down the use of browser extensions pretty significantly; however they have been working with Mozilla on universal extensions that could work across all mobile browsers.

Do browser extensions work on Chrome for iOS?

You can get some browser extensions for Safari as of iOS 15, but not for Google Chrome. Apple has very tight rules about extensions on mobile browsers and focused on Safari's extensions first. However, Apple has had discussions with Google (along with Mozilla and Microsoft) about developing a set of universal mobile extensions which will work across all browsers. There's no word on when those might be released.

When are more extensions coming?

More iOS Safari extensions are showing up on a daily basis. Like any new category in the Apple App Store, expect massive growth in the number of available apps over the course of the coming weeks and months.

One of the most effective things at the cinema is how the lights go down and you can focus solely on the cinema screen. Turn Off the Lights offers that same kind of effect on your laptop or desktop.

When on YouTube or another video based site, click the lightbulb icon on Safari, and the lights around the video playing are immediately dimmed. You can focus on the screen itself rather than everything going on around it.

To get the full effect, you need to tweak some settings, but it's a neat way of adding some atmosphere when watching a video.

Grammar Checker: Grammarly

You need a subscription to get the most from it.

Grammarly is there for those times when you're not quite sure if your spelling or grammar is up to scratch. It highlights issues via a red line underneath a word and allows you to easily correct them, whether you happen to be typing a Facebook status or a blog post.

It's a useful service that's like a little nudge in the right direction when trying to improve your writing ability. The free version offers helpful tips, but a subscription offers the most vlaue.

Password Management: LastPass

Safari has built-in password management, but LastPass is much better at the job. It works across multiple devices and also gives you somewhere to store files and notes securely.

One of the best things about Chrome is its ability to translate websites for you. Translate brings that functionality to Safari.

TreeClicks is my personal favorite Safari extension. It partners with online retailers all across the Web to plant trees every time you make a purchase. Most sites let you see how many trees you've planted through the app (with a notable exception being Amazon, which doesn't provide the numbers) and a surprising number of sites has joined in on this project. Just add the TreeClicks extension and it'll pop up when you go to a site it partners with and give you the option to plant a tree for free with any purchase from that site. 2. Microsoft Translator

Apple's native translating software leaves much to be desired. Language options are limited, and the ways to translate are pretty minimal. So, on this one, we're going to send you over to Microsoft. Microsoft Translator is one of the most popular translating options, and rightly so. It offers seventy language options, and can translate text on a webpage easily by activating the extension. Some browsers have a certain amount of built-in language translation, but I highly recommend getting the Microsoft Translator to make your life a lot easier.

This is a simple one - it blocks ads for you! There are a lot of ad blocking options out there, and most will get the job done for your one way or another, but AdBlock is simple, straightforward, and free. Blocking ads helps pages load faster and cuts down on the general annoyance of browsing, but some web pages won't let you load their content unless you disable your ad blocker, so you'll want to make sure to get one that's easily turned off. AdBlock is easy on/easy off, and that, combined with the fact you don't have to pay for it, is a win for me.

4. Pinterest

Pinterest is a great way to gain inspiration and collect DIY project ideas, but I regularly forget about its existence for months at a time. The Pinterest extension, however, not only keeps Pinterest in the forefront of my mind as a way to conveniently save recipes, projects, and beautiful images, but it also reminds me to actually go back and review these things next time I'm looking for something to cook or make, or just to vibe with. Even if you're not a regular Pinterest user, this extension is definitely worth checking out, because having all your inspiration in one place is excellent.

5. Grammarly

Ever have an argument derailed by a typo? Or maybe you've reread an email sent late at night only to realize your opening sentence made no sense. Whether you're aiming for professionalism or just competence in your written online presence, Grammarly has your back. I know there are currently (at least) 16 iOS15 Safari extensions that offer a dark mode option. I've bundled them in this list which includes both paid and free Safari extensions. Dark Reader is also available on iOS. Best (paid) options I've read about are: - Dark Reader (4.99 dollar, pay once) - Noir (2.99 dollar, pay once) I'm still a bit hesitant to use these third party extensions though as far as privacy is concerned. I hope Apple will make it available in a future iOS version (probably iOS16).

I‘ve been using the Nitefall extension but the developer seems to have removed it from the App Store. So now I’m showing that the app has an available update but I can’t update it and it just stays in the list of apps with updates available. Does anyone know why the dev removed the app? I’m in the US, if that matters.

Safari Extensions for iOS and iPadOS 15: A Roundup of Our Favorites

With the introduction of iOS and iPadOS 15, Apple has created an entirely new class of utility app on the App Store: Safari web extensions . Mac users have enjoyed extensions for years. However, for iPhone and iPad users, they’re brand new and promise to make Safari more useful than ever by opening up new power-user functionality that extends Safari in ways that Apple hasn’t. Judging from the initial crop of extensions available, I think Safari users are going to be very happy.

There are a couple of ways to install Safari extensions for iOS and iPadOS 15. First, you can go to the Settings app, select Safari, and inside the Extensions section, turn on any extensions you’ve installed and give them permission to interact with webpages. Second, you can enable or disable extensions by tapping on the puzzle piece icon in the address bar and then choosing ‘Manage Extensions.’ The same popover that appears when you tap the puzzle piece icon also lets you ‘Edit Actions,’ picking favorite extensions that will appear at the top of your extensions list in whatever order you drag them into, similar to the way picking favorite share and action extensions and rearranging them works.

Okay, let’s dig into some of the best extensions already available.

Webpage and Tab Customization

Too many websites don’t offer a dark mode. A good example is The New York Times and Vulture , which is pictured above. Far too often, when I’m reading late at night with the lights off, I tap on a Times link and get blinded by its bright white background. With Noir, that doesn’t happen because the extension can apply a dark mode to sites that don’t have their own.

I love Noir’s tasteful handling of dark mode. The color scheme has worked exceptionally well on all the sites I’ve tried.

The app is also highly customizable. You can set Noir to follow your system settings or to be on or off full-time. You can even use Noir’s dark mode instead of a site’s existing dark mode if you like it better. Those are all global settings, but you can apply Noir on a website-by-website basis too. Tap the Noir’s icon in the address bar, and you can switch between the app’s global setting, Auto, which follows your system settings, On, or Off. Even better, there’s a keyboard shortcut making it easy to cycle between Noir’s options for every website you visit with a connected keyboard. As a fan of dark mode, this is already one of my most-used extensions, especially on my iPad Pro.

Dark Reader

Dark Reader has several different dark modes to pick from.

Another dark mode extension worth mentioning is Dark Reader. What distinguishes it from Noir is that it’s got many more dark themes to choose from. In fact, there are 16 total themes with different color combinations. Like Noir, it can be set to turn on and off automatically or manually switched. You can also disable the extension for specific sites. However, Dark Reader doesn’t detect if a site has a dark mode automatically, and there’s no keyboard shortcut for toggling dark mode on and off per site, which I missed from Noir.

Tweaks for Twitter

I don’t use Twitter’s web app much, but Tweaks for Twitter has me reconsidering that. the extension eliminates a long list of Twitter annoyances like:

• Promoted tweets
• Trends in the right column
• The tweet editor at the top of your timeline
• Suggested follows

In total, there are more than a dozen tweaks to the Twitter UI available that can be enabled and disabled from the drop-down menu that appears when you select the extension’s wrench icon in the address bar.

If you spend most of your time in Safari, Momentum, which creates a beautiful, customizable start page, is worth a look. Between research, writing, and various services we use to run MacStories, I spend a large part of my day in Safari. What I like about Momentum is I can open a new tab and immediately see a beautiful photo from the service’s collection or that I upload myself, the time, a countdown to important upcoming events, the time in other parts of the world, the weather, my Todoist tasks for the day, a collection of links, and more. You can also play soundscapes as you work, search the web, add notes, and set a daily ‘focus’ to help keep you on track with your goals. Inspirational quotes and a mantra are available too, but those aren’t really my thing, so I haven’t tried them.

Basic functionality is free, but for $40/year adds the more powerful customizations and integrations. I’ve signed up for a year to see how it goes and will report back after I’ve had more time to see how well a widgetized start page integrates into my workday. Unlike some of the other extensions in this roundup, Momentum doesn’t require any interaction. Once it’s enabled, every new tab you open defaults to a Momentum start page.

Developer Tools and Extensions to Fix Website Annoyances

Both from Apollo developer Christian Selig , Achoo lets you inspect the HTML of a webpage, while Amplosion blocks Google search results from offering AMP URLs and redirects AMP links you tap or click to the canonical URL.

In addition to displaying a site’s HTML in a popover, Achoo lets you edit a webpage’s content or share the site’s HTML with another app. The font size in the popover is configurable too.

AMP is Google’s cached URL system that’s designed to speed up the mobile web but often ruins website functionality and junks up URLs. Amplosion works in the background when enabled, swapping AMP links with the website’s canonical URL. You can also add sites to an ‘Allow’ list if you want to permit AMP links on certain sites. If you’re curious how many AMP links you’ve avoided with the app, you can open the main app to see and while you’re there, play with Lord Waffles, a pixel art dog who lives in Amplosion and pick one of the many alternative icons the app offers.

Overamped is similar to Amplosion, but it handles Yandex Turbo URLs the same way it handles AMP URLs. Also, when a native app is available on your device, Overamped will open that instead of an AMP or Yandex Turbo link.

Super Agent

Cookie permission forms are an antiquated annoyance that do very little to protect user privacy, but they’re required by law in many countries and have begun spreading more and more to the US and other countries. Super Agent works in the background doing nothing but handling the acceptance of cookie policies automatically on your behalf. I’ve enjoyed using this extension so much on my iPhone and iPad that I installed it on my Macs too.

Stop the Madness

Stop the Madness offers a long list of site customizations.

If you’ve ever visited a website that has blocked your ability to copy text, autofill a password, or long-press to bring up a context menu, Stop the Madness is an extension you should consider. The extension has been available on the Mac for a long time and is now on the iPhone and iPad too, where can block sites from enabling a long list of often annoying features.

PiPifier is a handy extension for quickly forcing video into Picture-in-Picture mode. Even videos like the one at the top of Federico’s iOS and iPadOS 15 review can be dropped into a Picture-in-Picture window with the extension. Once installed and enabled, a quick tap of the extension is all it takes to open any video in Picture-in-Picture.

Vidimote gives you fine control over videos you find on the web. I’ve found that it doesn’t work for all videos, but when it does, the extension is an excellent tool to have at your disposal.

Selecting the extension allows you to play and pause a video, skip forward 30 seconds at a time and back 10 seconds, scrub through a video, slow down and speed up video from .5x to 2x (with the option of controlling speed with a slider or stepper controls that increment the speed .1x with each tap), enter Picture-in-Picture or Fullscreen modes, AirPlay the video to another screen, and mute and unmute the video. If you’re on a site like YouTube, you already have some of these controls at your disposal, but where the extension really shines is on other sites that use custom bare-bones video players, such as many news outlets.

I tried Vidimote on a variety of websites, and it works with the ones many people will use the most, like YouTube. However, it doesn’t seem able to handle YouTube embeds. A good example is The Verge’s video review of the iPhone 13 Pro. Vidmote had no problem detecting the video when I watched it from The Verge’s YouTube channel , but it couldn’t detect it on theverge.com , where the video was embedded. The extension had the same issue with embedded YouTube videos on other sites. However, I didn’t expect Vidimote to work with the video at the top of Federico’s iOS and iPadOS 15 review, but it did, allowing me to watch it in slow-mo, catching all the references in the screenshots he used. It’s worth keeping the YouTube embed limitation in mind if you watch a lot of video that way, but overall, I’ve been impressed at just how many different sites Vidmote works with.

Web Utilities

When I’m on my Mac, I’ve got Alfred triggers set up to make searching certain websites fast. Websites typically have a defined URL structure for search results, which makes them relatively easy to automate. With Alfred, you can predefine the URL structure and have the app tack on the search terms and execute the search. You can achieve the same sort of thing with Shortcuts on iOS and iPadOS, but it’s a clunky solution because it’s not something you can do from the address bar.

With xSearch, you can set up the same sort of thing inside the address bar. The extension comes with built-in search URLs for popular search engines. Just add a memorable shortcut, and with the extension enabled, type it into the address bar along with a search query, hit return, and the search is immediately executed, returning the results. So far, I’ve set up custom search shortcuts for MacStories, Club MacStories, and Amazon, to which I’ve assigned the shortcuts ‘ms,’ ‘cm,’ and ‘amz.’ My favorite part is that there’s nothing to click to activate this extension. I can just type ‘ms ipad’ into the address bar and hit return to get all the MacStories articles that mention the iPad. Because I’m searching multiple sites every day, this one is going to save me a lot of time.

1Password’s Safari extension is remarkable because it packs so many of the app’s features into the extension’s tiny UI. AgileBits is no stranger to web extensions, having made an excellent one for the Mac for many years, so the quality of the iOS and iPadOS version isn’t surprising.

From the 1Password icon in the address bar, you can sign into the app and access your entire database, including passwords, credit cards, bank account details, and secure notes. You can even switch between vaults. There are controls to create and edit items and access 1Password’s settings. However, tapping on most of those controls triggers a URL scheme to open the main app where you can make changes. Passwords can also be generated form the extension.

The other component of the 1Password extension is a 1Password icon that appears in login fields. Similar to the Mac, you first have to unlock 1Password by tapping on the address bar icon. Once you’ve done that, tap on the 1Password icon in a login field, and the app suggests a password to autofill. The entire process is incredibly well done and will be immediately familiar to anyone who has used the 1Password extension on the Mac.

CardPointers

CardPointers maintains a database of the best deals offered by credit card companies. I’ve written about the app’s widgets in the past, but I think the app is an even better fit for Safari extensions. Once you’ve added any credit cards you use, select the extension from Safari’s address bar, and the app will show you the rewards available on a website. The app also displays a small popup at the bottom of the screen that can be expanded to show rewards information instead. If you juggle a lot of credit cards looking for bargains, CardPointers’ Safari extension is worth taking a look at.

GoodLinks is an excellent read-it-later app that has one of the best-designed share extensions in its category. The app is also highly customizable with robust Shortcuts support, a URL scheme, and, most recently, AppleScript support on the Mac.

The latest update adds an iOS and iPadOS 15 Safari extension for saving an article without invoking the share sheet. Tapping on the extension pulls in the URL, article title, and summary automatically, to which you can add tags and choose whether to mark it as read or starred. Although the same functionality is available from the share sheet, having GoodLinks right in the address bar saves you at least one click and more depending on where GoodLinks is among your share extensions. This Safari extension helps fix my Reddit experience now that Apollo is gone

Make Reddit bearable again.

Browsing Reddit on my iPhone used to be an enjoyable experience. Not by using the official Reddit app, you understand – that was (and still is) a nightmare – but by using the much-beloved Apollo app. Yet since Reddit jealously forced Apollo’s developer to shutter the app, I’ve been left in something of a no man’s land.

Using the Reddit app isn’t really an option, as it’s so full of ads and irritating design features that I’ve long since given up on it. But the other alternative – browsing the site in Safari – has its own problems, mainly relating to those incredibly annoying nagging pop-ups that beg you to launch the official app. We’ve been over this Reddit, your app sucks, I’m not going to use it.

For a long time, I was at a loss for what to do. Until, that is, I discovered a handy little Safari extension called Sink It for Reddit . Install this app, tweak a few options, and your browsing experience is freshened up and made a whole lot more bearable. It’s not quite as good an experience as using Apollo was (but then again, what is?), but it’s lured me back to Reddit without requiring me to shore up the official app’s download count. That alone is a win.

What does Sink It for Reddit do?

Sink It for Reddit automatically removes all of those annoying banners telling you to try the Reddit app. These sections take up significant portions of the screen and interrupt your browsing, but with Sink It for Reddit, they’re gone in a flash.

But it offers much more than just automatic banner banishment. You can block ads and promoted content, hide the navigation bar for a more immersive view, add a ‘back to top’ button so you don’t have to endlessly scroll upwards, and much more.

Some of my favorite tweaks relate to comments. I love that Sink It adds color coding to comment threads, making it very easy to keep track of who is replying to whom. You can add a button that scrolls to the next parent comment in a thread, automatically collapse auto-mod posts, and show images inline instead of seeing <image> tags wherever you look.

There are a bunch of other improvements found in the app, and combined they make Sink It an all-in-one fix-up shop for Reddit. I’ve gotten so used to some of its tweaks that I occasionally forget that they’re not native features, that’s how good it is.

The same developer has also launched Sink It for Twitter/X , which takes a similar approach of nuking X’s most irritating features and making the experience on Safari much more pleasant (well, apart from all the weirdos and vitriol, but that’s well beyond the developer’s remit).

As great as Sink It for Reddit is, it doesn’t quite hit Apollo’s level of greatness. But in a world where Reddit is cracking down on almost any competitors to its own (frankly awful) official app, it’s a welcome addition to my Home Screen. If you’re sick of the way Reddit works but still love its content and community, it’s a great app to try.

How to use Sink It for Reddit

• Once you’ve installed Sink It for Reddit from the App Store , open the Settings app and go to Safari > Extensions . Tap Sink It for Reddit , then enable all the toggles. Make sure reddit.com and Other Websites are also set to Allow in the Permissions section
• Now, open Sink It for Reddit and tap the red Sink It Settings button . Here you’ll find all of the app’s tweaks divided into categories
• Try tapping the Comments Upgrades button . Go through the list of adjustments and enable any that catch your eye. All your changes are applied automatically, there’s no Save button you have to press. You can now go to the other settings sections and make any changes you want
• While most settings are enabled or disabled using a simple toggle, you can also add to your lists of favorite subreddits and banned subreddits using the relevant sections in Sink It’s settings
• You’ll notice that some settings have colored dots next to them. These indicate which version of Reddit the features are supported on. Green dots refer to the new unified user interface (UI), while yellow ones are for old Reddit only. Red dots work for both old and new UIs on desktop, while blue dots denote support for both old and new UIs on mobile
