Mount Bromo Volcano Sunrise In Indonesia (Travel Guide)

Watching the sunrise at the Mount Bromo volcano in Indonesia is easily one of the most amazing travel experiences in the world. You can even climb the crater and look directly into the smoking volcano!

Bromo can be visited on a road trip through East Java , along with other epic sights like the Ijen crater lake and giant waterfalls, or you can fly from Bali straight to Surabaya and visit Bromo on a day tour from there.

We’ve done it both ways, and would love to go again. Either way, the Bromo volcano is a bucket list item you shouldn’t miss on your journey through Southeast Asia.

This travel guide will explain how to go to Mount Bromo, what to see and do there, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Where Is Bromo?

Mount Bromo is an active volcano crater located in East Java, Indonesia.

It’s part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, where you can see a cluster of 5 incredible volcanoes (including Bromo), and Java’s highest mountain Semeru puffing out smoke in the background.

Bromo is located between the cities of Malang, Surabaya, and Probolinggo, and you can visit it from any of those places.

How To Visit Mount Bromo

The easiest way to visit Bromo is to fly to Malang or Surabaya, and then book a day tour or a multi-day trip from there. If you’re in Bali, you can also do it in the opposite direction, starting overland from Bali and then ending at Malang or Surabaya.

Bali has direct flights to and from Surabaya (SUB) every day, and a one way ticket can be as cheap as 700k Rupiah ($45 USD). You can shop for flights to Malang or Surabaya at Skyscanner.

Once you arrive in Malang or Surabaya, it’s easy to book a day tour to Bromo or you can arrange everything yourself if you prefer. A full day tour is enough time to see all the highlights of the park.

We normally like to do things without a tour, but this is one case where I think the tour is a good idea because it’s much more convenient and it includes extra activities like Jeep riding around the volcano. Bromo is a bucket list item and you want to do it justice.

Best Tour Package For Mount Bromo

Here’s a top rated day tour package for Mount Bromo starting from Surabaya or Malang.

You can book this with Klook as a private tour or shared tour, and it includes all of the highlights like the Mount Bromo sunrise, jeep ride in the sea of sand, optional horse ride, crater hike at the volcano, and you can also add the Madakaripura waterfall as a bonus to the itinerary.

If you’re wanting to do a multi-day trip, Klook has overland tours to Bromo and Ijen from Bali with guides, accommodation, and other expenses included. You can even add on a visit to the Tumpak Sewu waterfall .

We’ve used Klook for lots of tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Where To Stay

In East Java you have the option of basing yourself in Surabaya, Malang, Probolinggo, or Mount Bromo itself ( Cemoro Lawang village ).

Surabaya has the most comfy hotels since it’s a major city in Indonesia, and Malang has some great options too. Probolinggo is smaller, but also has a few good hotel options .

Here are some of our top hotel recommendations below for the city of Surabaya, which is where we stayed on our last trip to Mount Bromo.

Staying At Bromo

If you want to stay really close to the action, there are some hotels at Cemoro Lawang village right by Bromo, but they tend to be pretty basic and overpriced for what you get.

Cemoro Lawang is generally not a fun place to stay because it’s very undeveloped and hasn’t caught up to the mass tourism at Bromo yet. That may change someday, but for now, most of the budget friendly hotel options at Cemoro Lawang are really rough.

Our top recommendations there would be Cahyo Homestay Bromo , Good Karma Guesthouse , or Guesthouse Gunung Bromo . Again, don’t expect luxury.

You can see the highlights of the volcano in one full day tour, so it’s not really necessary to stay there longer unless you’re a serious photographer or just want more time exploring the area.

Best Things To Do At Mount Bromo

• mount bromo sunrise.

First things first — witness the famous sunrise at Mount Bromo!

Before you start exploring the mountain up close, you have to see the sunrise from the top of the caldera. Every tour package starts like this, and for good reason.

It’s probably one of the best places in the world to watch the sunrise. The colors are amazing, and on a clear day you can see all the way to Mount Argopuro in the east.

Mount Bromo Sunrise

• Mount Bromo Volcanoes Viewpoint

The viewpoints on the north side of the caldera are where you can get those iconic pics of the volcano cluster.

Your main options are Seruni Point , King Kong Hill , Bukit Perahu , Bukit Cinta , or the highest viewpoint Penanjakan . You can click each of these links for map coordinates.

To be honest, there is very little difference between these viewpoints and the only reason so many of them exist is to help space out the crowds at Bromo, which can be pretty crazy (especially on weekends).

In other words, don’t worry about which viewpoint you go to — they’re all amazing, so just enjoy the epic scenery! Photography here in the early morning is ideal because you’ll get nice shadows and atmospheric fog around the base of the caldera.

Mount Bromo Sunrise Indonesia Volcano Crater Tour

• Sea of Sand

After sunrise, the next stop is the ‘sea of sand’ at the bottom of the caldera. The locals call it Lautan Pasir, which means the same thing in Bahasa Indonesia.

This is a really neat place and you’ll need to pass through it anyway to reach the Bromo crater. You can explore the sea of sand by Jeep, horse, or motorbike.

It’s a perfect photo spot with the steep ridges of the Mount Widodaren volcano in the background.

• Mount Bromo Crater Hike

Possibly the most amazing thing to do at the Bromo mountain complex is the hike to the top of the smoking volcano crater.

The full hike to the top of the crater, starting from the sea of sand, takes about 1 hour, although you can speed it up if you ride a horse partway.

The last part of the hike has to be done on foot, and it’s a short but steep climb up a concrete stairway to the top of the crater. It’s not too hard for non-hikers, and even kids can do it.

Be careful at the top because there’s not much of a safety railing, and on a windy day it has nasty sulfur fumes that are hard to breathe. Generally you can’t see red lava here, but you can peek right into the smoking crater of the active volcano!

Is The Volcano Safe?

Mount Bromo is generally safe to visit, but it’s a good idea to check the current status before you make plans, otherwise you may not get the full experience if part of the park is closed.

There were eruptions in 2010, 2015, and 2019. Usually no one is hurt, and you can still get some great views from a distance, but at the very least they may close access to the Mount Bromo crater hike , because during a 2004 eruption two tourists were killed by flying rocks there.

Nowadays, the area is closely monitored and they have earthquake detectors underground to anticipate any major volcanic activity.

No one has been hurt by the volcano in almost 20 years, and it gets close to 1 million visitors per year, so overall the safety record is pretty good.

Entrance Fee

  • Weekdays: 220k IDR (~$15 USD) / person / day
  • Weekends: 320k IDR (~$21 USD) / person / day

These entrance fees for Mount Bromo are current as of 2024.

It’s a bit pricey by Indonesian standards, and I wish they would at least make the tickets last longer (like 3 days) so you could get more bang for your buck.

Weather / Climate — How Cold Is It?

Even though this is Indonesia, it can be pretty chilly before sunrise since you’re 2,329 meters (7,641 ft) above sea level, and the sunrise viewpoints are even higher!

The elevation at the Penanjakan viewpoint is a whopping 2,770 meters (9,088 ft). For Indonesia, that’s unusually high.

Temperatures can drop below 7 Celsius (45 F), and that doesn’t even factor in wind chill. It can get incredibly windy on the mountain peaks, and dry season is cooler than rainy season.

However, you’ll only be chilly before sunrise. After that, it warms up pretty quick, and the sun at this elevation is plenty strong.

If you’re too cold at Mt.Bromo while waiting for sunrise, you can also rent a jacket at your hotel, or rent a jacket from one of the many small local shops near the sunrise viewpoints.

What To Bring

  • Jacket: This is essential for sunrise because it can be very chilly. After sunrise, you’ll want to shed the jacket.
  • Footwear: Regular shoes are fine, but sturdy hiking shoes are better for the Mount Bromo hike. If you go to the crater, you’ll be walking on slippery gravel and steep inclines or declines at times.
  • Sunglasses: Can be good to protect your eyes from sandstorms in the sea of sand.
  • Poncho: If you visit Bromo during the rainy season in Indonesia (especially December to February), you might want to bring a rain jacket just in case.
  • Snacks: Even though most tours include free breakfast, it’s skimpy and you’ll probably be wanting energy snacks to go with it.
  • Headlight: This is useful for hiking before sunrise, especially if you plan to do the crater hike without a guide.
  • Camera: Mandatory! A small tripod could be handy too since it’ll be dark before the sunrise.
  • Drone: So far, there aren’t any rules against flying a drone at the Mount Bromo volcano, although I wouldn’t recommend doing it at the sunrise point since it’s so crowded. Once you go down to the Sea of Sand, there’s a lot of wide open space to fly without bothering people.

Best Month To Visit

There’s not really a best month to visit Mount Bromo, although any time in the dry season is definitely ideal.

Indonesia’s dry season runs from April to November, and during this time there’s less rain and the mountain visibility is best. This applies to East Java too.

You can still visit Bromo during the rainy season in East Java (December to March), but if it’s cloudy you may miss the sunrise and the iconic view of the volcanoes, so it’s not ideal.

With that said, both of the times we went here were technically on the tail end of the rainy season, and we still had perfect weather, so don’t write it off completely.

In general, it’s hard to avoid the crowds at Mount Bromo because this place has become a bucket list item for so many people. Definitely try to avoid weekends and public holidays, because the park can get especially crowded during those times.

If you want to see an active volcano in Indonesia without any crowds, check out Mount Dukono in North Maluku. This one is more remote than Bromo and requires a harder hike to reach, but it’s spectacular and you might have it all to yourself!

Is Mount Bromo Open / Closed?

Yes, Mount Bromo is currently open for tourists as of 2024! I’ll update this travel guide if anything changes.

The mountain is rarely closed to the public, and that would only happen temporarily if there’s some kind of special ceremony, or if there’s unusual volcanic activity or other safety concerns.

Mount Bromo will be briefly closed for Wulan Kapitu (January 9-10, 2024), Silent Day (March 11-12, 2024), and Yadnya Kasada (July 6-7, 2024), and again for Wulan Kapitu (December dates TBA, 2024).

You can also check on status updates for all of Indonesia’s volcanoes at Magma Indonesia .

Happy travels!

More Things To See Near Bromo

There are lots of good things to see and do in East Java, Indonesia, including the spectacular Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and a bunch of other nice waterfalls near Malang and Probolinggo.

After visiting Mt Bromo, most travelers head on to Kawah Ijen , a spectacular crater lake on the eastern end of Java island.

You could even climb Mount Semeru, which is Java’s tallest mountain. It’s the volcano peak you see erupting in the distance behind Bromo.

Don’t forget to check out my 1-Week Java itinerary for more ideas of what to do in Central and East Java!

Mount Bromo vs Kawah Ijen: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Mount Bromo or Kawah Ijen ? And if you only have time to see one of them, which should it be? That’s not an easy question, actually.

In my opinion, Bromo has a more spectacular landscape, and you get to look into a smoking volcano crater. The hiking is also easier compared to Ijen, and it’s closer to a major airport (Surabaya), although the drive from town is longer.

On the other hand, Mount Ijen has the world’s biggest acid lake, with a spectacular turquoise color, and you can see the ‘blue fire’ phenomenon if you go there at night. Ijen also has the advantage of being closer to Bali, and closer to a town (Banyuwangi).

Overall, it’s hard to choose between Mount Bromo vs Kawah Ijen. I lean toward Bromo as my favorite, but that’s just my opinion and I’m sure plenty of people would disagree with me. If you have time, definitely try to see both places when you’re in East Java!

Hi David. Hope you’re well. My name is Sujay, I’m from Mumbai, India – and I’ve been planning a trip to Bali and Java for the past few months to come hike a few volcanic mountains and shoot some videos for a personal art project. I’ve been reading your blog a lot and have really enjoyed the pics and details – very helpful. However, just 5 days before I was arrive in Bali, I heard the news that the Bali government, just last week, has banned entry to ALL mountains for tourists and locals alike. I was wondering if you know anything about this – is the ban in effect and super strict? Or are there guides still taking tourists on hikes?

The ban is specifically for the province of Bali and whatever places comes under its jurisdiction – I think this includes east Java too. I wanted to know if trips to Mt. Bromo and Kawah Ijen are still happening or these sites are also banned from climbing?

Are there any other active/smoking volcanoes outside of the official Bali province which you’d recommend? I was also looking at visiting smoking lava fields, hot springs etc…

I’m already here in Bali, so it would be great if I hear back soon!

Thanks so very much. Looking forward, Sujay

' src=

Hi Sujay, thanks for your comment. I just replied on email. The Bali mountain ban being pushed by the governor is not in effect at the moment, and I think it’s very unlikely it will happen. In any case, it wouldn’t affect any of the mountains in Java, including Mount Bromo and Kawah Ijen. Good luck on your trip!

' src=

Could you please elaborate on: “and you can even travel from Bali to Mount Bromo without much hassle.” If we want to travel overland from Malang to Bali, what would be the best way to do so?

Hi Kelsey! We hired a private driver and did a road trip starting from Malang and ending in Bali. We saw a bunch of waterfalls near Malang, and then did Bromo and Ijen on the way to Bali. You can see some of our itinerary ideas here . If you want to simplify it, Klook has multi-day tours to Bromo and Ijen from Bali with guides, accommodation, and other expenses included. Before covid there were also direct flights from Bali to Malang (and vice versa), but right now the only flight options are Yogyakarta or Surabaya. Good luck! I’m happy to answer any questions.

Love the post, lots of great information please keep updated….

Hi David, my name is Paula and I be travelling to Surabaya over this weekend for a Bromo Crater hike. Heard this was an off limit activity since the fire. Wonder if this ban has been lifted and if there is anywhere online that I can check for this update? By the way, thanks so much for sharing your journeys and beautiful pictures.

Hi Paula! Thanks for your comment. Bromo officially re-opened for tourism yesterday (September 19). I haven’t heard if that includes the crater hike, but I would think it’s open as well. The fire is already extinguished. Good luck!

Customers' Experiences

Yes. We can customise the itinerary if you wish to add or remove any attractions in our pre-made itinerary. You can also inform our guide on the day of your tour if you decide not to visit a certain attraction.

A passport with a minimum of 6 months validity and travel insurance are a must. For other essentials, we will send you a packing list after you book your tour with us.

The nearest international airport to Mount Bromo is Juanda International Airport in Surabaya. You can also start the tour from Bali or Yogyakarta.

A 2-way airport transfer service is included in all our tour packages. On Day 1, we will pick you up at Surabaya airport at your arrival time. If you are already in Surabaya, we will pick you up at your hotel at 9am instead. On the last day, we will drop you off at the airport.

Yes. You can request for the optional Milky Way tour. We’ll pick you up at 10pm from your lodge to Cemoro Lawang. You will then head to nearby peaks such as Mount Penanjakan, Mentigen Hill, Kingkong Hill or Seruni Point and the Sea of Sand where you can view the Milky Way. Avid photographers should bring suitable camera equipment as well. You would then continue with the standard itinerary to view the sunrise at Mount Bromo. This will cost an additional of SGD 50/pax, on top of your current tour package.

Entrance fees have various pricing for locals, foreigner and peak periods. It also gives you more flexibility as you can choose not to go to the attraction when you are on the tour and reduces the hassle for refund afterwards.

A round trip costs around 200,000 – 250,000 IDR (from the Sea of Sand to the rim of Bromo crater and back). Do note that the horse ride ends near the start of the stairs to the Mount Bromo crater. You will still have to climb about 250 flight of stairs up to the crater. The horse ride is entirely optional and you can choose to walk across the sea of sand, which most visitors do. Do negotiate with the horsemen to get a better deal.

Generally, our tours are all inclusive except for entrance fees, lunch and dinner during the tour.

For lunch and dinner expenses, you can budget it at around 70,000 IDR/meal (about SGD 6). However, this amount greatly depends on what you order and where you dine.

No. Mount Bromo is very dark and cold in the night. We do not allow our customers to hike solely on foot for safety concerns, unless you’ve reached the entrance of the sunrise viewpoint.

Sunglasses and sunblock lotion are highly recommended – the sun rays can be harsh and at high altitude, it is easy to get sunburnt even though the surrounding temperature is cold. The terrain is very sandy – wearing a face mask is also recommended for protection (akin to walking in a desert). If you are visiting the waterfalls, please bring along wet gears such as swim suits with t-shirt and shorts, water booties/covered sandals, spectacle hooks, waterproof cover for your phone/camera which can be secured to your body, change of clothes and towel.

Our vehicle will first drop you at the parking lot of Madakaripura Waterfalls, where you will hop to a motorbike (Ojek) for a short 5 minutes ride to the entrance. Then, you need to do a trek of around 30 minutes (2km) to reach the waterfalls.

Swimming is no longer allowed at the waterfalls since 2018 but you will still get drenched. For footwear, we highly recommend covered rubber shoes or sandals.

For more FAQs, please refer to our FAQ page or message/call us for faster response.

Although you won't notice its beauty during the night, your route back to Malang will be the same. It will be around midnight when you are picked up. Local snacks with hot coffee and tea are waiting for you before the sun rises. Enjoy being here, relax with your friends. From your early morning drink till the viewpoint will be a 100 meters walk only.

Walk in Mt. Bromo's area

After sunrise the black Sea of Sand is next, where you can enjoy your breakfast in picnic style and a stunning view over the area. Then, after parking near Mt. Bromo himself, it is a 45 minutes walk to the crater rim. Once you reach the "top", you can explore or take a break and enjoy the view. Once back at the car, the contrasting green savanna is next to visit. According to the story, the savanna used to be a large crater lake. It dried up and formed an array of various rocky and sandy textures. The savanna is now vast flat land with bushes and some hills.

On our way back to Malang we will make a first stop at a local village. The Hindu people living in the vicinity of Mt. Bromo are farmers in the high lands. Their crops grow on one of the steepest and highest mountains in Java with manual labor and a high yield. Their way of living is interesting and the people are open to get acquainted with. Next stops can be for lunch (not included), to visit an apple plantation and/or the waterfall Pelangi, and/or Kampong Jodipan in Malang.

Mount Bromo Sunrise: Everything You Need To Know

Mount Bromo is one of the most incredible volcanoes in the world. It just so happens to be surrounded by several other volcanoes in one of the most magnificent landscapes you will ever set eyes on. The sunrise views over the entire area are simply incredible. Jeep tours to Mount Bromo for sunrise are one of the most popular activities in East Java and I’ll share with you the top tours but also how to do it on your own! I enjoyed the Mount Bromo sunrise viewpoint without a tour and I’m going to share those details so you will know the sunrise viewpoints, hikes, maps, and important timings for your DIY Mount Bromo sunrise adventure.

MOUNT BROMO: VISITORS GUIDE

Mount Bromo (known as Gunung Bromo in the local language of Bahasa) is an active volcano. It is part of the Tengger Massif region in East Java, Indonesia, which is one of the most visited tourist attractions in all of East Java and even Java itself.

The volcano is part of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. If you are wondering what the term ‘Bromo’ means you are correct if you guessed it held some great significance. It is derived from the Javanese pronunciation of ‘Brahma, which is the Hindu creator god.

  • Surabaya: Bumi Surabaya Resort – Perfect oasis in the middle of Surabaya
  • Near Bromo: Royal Orchids Hotel – Huge hotel with classy rooms and pool
  • Near Ijen: Ijen Resort & Villas – Amazing garden, pool and views

MOUNT BROMO LOCATION

Mount Bromo lies in the middle of a huge crater called the ‘Sea of Sand’, which is a protected reserve. There are a total of five volcanoes inside the crater including Mount Bromo (2,329m), Mount Batok (2,470 m), Mount Kursi (2,581 m), Mount Watangan (2,661 m), and Mount Widodaren (2,650 m).On a typical tour you will visit viewpoints on Mount Penanjakan that look back into the crater and towards Bromo, visit inside the crater at the ‘Sea of Sand’ and have the option to summit Mount Bromo itself.

MOUNT BROMO SUNRISE TOUR

As you can see this blog makes it clear you don’t NEED a guided tour but it makes it much easier and potentially more organized and enjoyable with a guide who knows all the spots and timings to make sure you enjoy your Mount Bromo Sunrise Tour. There are two tours I recommend, which both have almost 1000 positive reviews. Here they are:

BEST VALUE MOUNT BROMO SUNRISE TOUR : For just $25 this tour includes hotel pick-up, jeep drive to Mount Bromo, watching the sunrise, do the small hike up the volcano and then drop off at the hotel. Everything you need!

MOUNT BROMO SUNRISE & MADARAKIPURA WATERFALL TOUR : For a little bit extra, combine the Mount Bromo Sunrise with a visit to the best waterfall in East Java.

HOW TO GET TO MOUNT BROMO

Mount Bromo is a 45-minute walk from the village of Cemoro Lawang. The nearest cities/towns are Malang or Probollingo. I used Probollingo as a base to visit Mount Bromo and it was a 1.5-hour moped drive to the entrance from Probollingo.

In relation to the other attractions, you may want to visit in East Java, Mount Bromo is more or less the central figure. I say central because you will likely fly into Surabaya and also likely visit Ijen Crater. This puts Mount Bromo somewhere in the middle of those two depending on your route.

As you can see on the map below it is about equal distance to Mount Bromo from either Probollingo or Malang. I don’t think it really matters, either way, to be honest. Probollingo was a good base for us as we also visited Madakaripura waterfall, which is nearby. We had already visited Malang at the start of our route so there was no need to return.

MOUNT BROMO ENTRANCE FEE

We drove to Mount Bromo on our mopeds. We didn’t need to book anything in advance. You just arrive at the gates and the first man asked us for 10,000 rupiah, which is less than $1 USD.

Then moments later at another stop, we bought the ticket at the official booth, which was 220,000 rupiah, which at the time was about $16 USD. Therefore give or take with the exchange rates the total fee was $17 USD.

We did also pay for parking at King Kong Hill viewpoint and at the foot of Mount Bromo before we summitted. Both of those fees were about $1. Total fees and parking tickets for the day were less than $20 USD. Not bad for the most popular attraction in the region!

bromo sunrise tour

MOUNT BROMO HEIGHT

Mount Bromo is 2,329 meters (7,641 ft) above sea level but despite its immense popularity, it isn’t even the highest peak in the region! Don’t worry, when you hike up to the summit you will already be high above sea level before you begin so you won’t actually be hiking 2,329 meters. That is just how far above sea level the peak is. The actual trek to the top takes only about 20-30 minutes depending on your fitness level.

BEST TIME TO VISIT MOUNT BROMO

The best time to visit Mount Bromo in East Java, Indonesia is during the dry season, which typically falls between April and October. This period offers more favorable weather conditions, with lower chances of rainfall and clearer skies, allowing for better visibility of the stunning landscapes and the sunrise over the volcano.

One of the highlights of visiting Mount Bromo is witnessing the breathtaking sunrise from vantage points such as Mount Penanjakan. The dry season offers a higher chance of clear mornings, enhancing the experience and providing an unobstructed view of the sunrise illuminating the surrounding landscapes.

During the dry season, temperatures at Mount Bromo are generally cooler, making it more comfortable for trekking and exploration. However, it’s advisable to bring warm clothing as temperatures can still be chilly, especially in the early morning hours.

It’s important to note that Mount Bromo is a popular tourist destination, and peak periods, such as weekends and holiday seasons, can be crowded. To avoid large crowds and enjoy a more serene experience, consider visiting on weekdays or during non-peak periods.

While the dry season is generally recommended, it’s still a good idea to check the weather forecast before planning your visit as weather conditions can vary. Fog and haze can occur at any time, affecting visibility, so it’s best to be prepared and flexible with your itinerary.

By visiting Mount Bromo during the dry season, you increase your chances of experiencing the majestic beauty of the volcano and its surroundings to the fullest.

MOUNT BROMO TEMPERATURE

You are most likely going to Mount Bromo for sunrise. It isn’t going to be a freezing snowcapped mountain but you will be chilly. We drove for 1.5 hours on the mopeds in a jacket and shorts and we were cold, to say the least. Most people had jackets, beanies, gloves, and the whole nine yards.

However, once the sun rises you don’t need any of that as it becomes quite hot. So you are really only chilly for a short period of time, especially if you arrive by jeep or car then you don’t have the wind like on a motorbike.

The temperature at the King Kong Hill viewpoints can get to as low as 5-10 degrees Celsius. It’s Indonesia. Bring layers and no doubt you will remove them. We drove home and got sunburnt after freezing our butts off in the morning.

MOUNT BROMO SUNRISE WITHOUT A GUIDE

If you are going on a Mount Bromo tour with the jeep, I would continue reading as well because you may find some valuable information in this post regarding photo spots, sunrise spots, and itineraries you could suggest to your driver.

First I will give you all of the information about Mount Bromo and then I will share with you how we did it without a tour, which was very simple and easy. It gave us a lot of freedom to have our own motorbikes for the day.

DOING IT SOLO!

Okay, that’s all of the general information about Mount Bromo covered. Now I will share with you my journey and how we did Mount Bromo without a tour. There is no big hack but we did find a lack of information online about motorbikes, where to rent them, can they cover the terrain, where to go for sunrise, etc. So, I hope this helps the DIY community enjoy their day at Mount Bromo for sunrise and more.

GETTING A MOTORBIKE IN PROBOLLINGO

It’s the night before we hike Mount Bromo and we need a motorbike. We are in Probollingo and it is quite clear this is not a tourist town and there are no tourist shops with bikes and tours on every corner as you might find in Bali. We begin to trawl forums and blogs looking for a travel agent or someone who rents out bikes and eventually we found a local called Bowo. His Whatsapp number is:   +62 813 7324 2198

He came and picked us up from our homestay and took us to his house. Here he showed us the bikes, we paid him each 150,000 rupiahs (This isn’t Bali with 50,000 rupiah bikes, this is Probollingo, where you pray you will find something with two wheels). He kept our passport.

Surprisingly he told us yeah take them on the sand, go for it! Normally an owner is more cautious. We found that even stranger once we experienced the sand!

THE JOURNEY FROM PROBLLINGO TO MOUNT BROMO

We were insistent on being at the top with time to spare because we were making a film and shooting photos. So we saw that it was about a 2-hour drive from Probollingo to Bromo. Therefore we decided to leave at 2 am. This gave us time for any incidents or wrong turns and would give us about an hour to spare at the top.

We ended up reaching a small village about 35 minutes before Mount Bromo’s entrance. It turned out that we were way too early as we still had several hours till sunrise. We stopped here and had two coffees before continuing on a little later. It was a very cold drive but we did it in shorts and survived. If you are smart and have pants, wear them!

If you want to cut it close you could leave Probollingo at 3 am but I would probably suggest heading off around 230 am having experienced the journey myself once. I’m not sure if we went the wrong way but we drove across the crater in the morning to get to King Kong Hill. The route was fine we just didn’t see anybody else doing it.

The sand was super thick so we were skidding all over the place by ourselves in the crater. It was actually pretty funny looking back on it but we thought we were lost in the dark for sure!

MOUNT BROMO SUNRISE VIEWPOINTS

Once you pay your entrance fees and get into the national park, you soon realize how popular this place is. As you drive up towards King Kong Hill, hundreds of jeeps literally line both sides of the road. It is insane.

Now. You are left with several options for your sunrise.

A) KING KONG HILL: Go to King Kong Hill, which is more or less the highest viewpoint on Penanjakan Hill looking down at Mount Bromo for sunrise. It is insanely crowded and you might get poked in the eye with a selfie stick. I would avoid this option although I am sure the view is great. We originally planned to go to King Kong Hill and just find our own spot somehow but on the way we stopped as we thought we had made it and it turned out we were one peak too soon, which ended up being perfect.

We could see the madness of King Kong Hill to our left as 20 or so of us calmly watched the sunrise over Mount Bromo with no barriers.

B) JUST BEFORE KING KONG HILL: Therefore, option B is to go almost the whole way to King Kong Hill but stop just before and watch it at a smaller viewpoint. I’ll admit, amidst all the people and parking lots it is hard to find what you want so you kind of just have to get lucky and hope you find a good spot. Once again, leaving early gives you breathing room if you pick a dud viewpoint you can quickly change.

C) PENANJAKAN HILL : There are lots of viewpoints all the way all Penanjakan Hill. Some of them look all the way down the ridge of the crater, which is awesome and others have huge drop-off or unobstructed views. To be honest, until you visit once or during the day it will be hard to know which you will prefer. The reality is they all more or less look at the same place and we visited several of them after sunrise and commented to each other that we wouldn’t have been disappointed at any.

D) ON MOUNT BROMO FOR SUNRISE: The final option, which is definitely one worth considering is to be on top of Mount Bromo for sunrise. All of the tours go to King Kong Hill or Penanjakan Hill for sunrise and then hike up Mount Bromo after.

Like clockwork after sunrise they make the transition to Mount Bromo for the hike, quickly vacating King Kong Hill. If you do it in reverse, you get an epic view of the sunrise from the crater rim, and then you miss the crowds when you go up to the viewpoint. It’s definitely something to consider. We thought about this option long and hard but decided in the end we wanted to take photos of the entire valley or ‘Sea of Sand’ while the sun was rising.

Our sunrise was epic and cold. The trees made it a bit difficult for too many photos but you had a clear view out of Mount Bromo for landscape photos. For us, it was a great helipad for the drones and we sent them straight down towards Mount Bromo for some amazing shots.

Below are two examples of viewpoints we could see from our very own viewpoint. The third shot below is the drone photo I took while flying from our sunrise viewpoint.

DRIVING DOWN TO ‘SEA OF SAND’ INTO MOUNT BROMO

Now that the sunrise is over, you make the slow crawl down the mountain into the crater with all of the jeep drivers. Don’t try and speed down you will just get stuck behind another jump, cruise down in the now warmer weather and enjoy the glimpses of Mount Bromo. Once you reach the sand you will see that the jeep tours all run off and find their own little spot to take photos. It is actually kind of strange like part of the tour is modeling with your jeep.

We decided to go off-roading with our mopeds and seriously had so much fun. We also got stuck 100+ times but we were flying around as our back wheels were sliding from left to right. It’s a great way to crash or get injured but bloody fun. There’s no need to do any of that but for us, it was part of the experience and we were taking photos and videos while we were at it.

If you choose not to drive like a maniac across the thick sand you will still likely struggle. There are many parts where the sand is so soft and thick you will get stuck or be sliding around. This isn’t ideal for a first-timer to be honest. It’s not difficult per se but not comfortable at all. We were covered from head to toe in dust.

After our fun in the sand, we made our way over to the entrance for the Mount Bromo hike and parked our bikes for 50 cents. There is also a toilet here and there are snacks available.

MOUNT BROMO SUMMIT HIKE

The trail to the top of Mount Bromo Summit is free. It takes about 20-30 minutes depending on how quickly you can haul yourself up the sandy slope. Many tourists decide it is a good idea to have a horse haul them up the hill. It’s pretty cruel for the horses and I suggest you think long and hard about how the horse is feeling before deciding you are a bit too tired to walk up the hill.

It took us about 25 minutes and when we reached the summit, I had imagined it would be a nice view but nothing too amazing. I thought the sunrise viewpoint was the pinnacle. How was I so wrong!? Once you reach the top you look down inside the huge crater as the sulfur pit of hell rumbles loudly and ominously!

mount bromo without a tour king kong hill

All sides of the crater slope down and it appears as if it is an actual burning pit of fire. Essentially Mount Bromo is the closest thing to hell on earth in the best way possible.

You can actually walk all the way around the crater although bear in mind the safety railing only covers you for the first few steps. After that, you are on your own. It isn’t dangerous but the reality is if you slip down the side of the crater you are in big trouble. The path is about 1-meter wide in most parts. Know your fears and limits and don’t go past the viewing area if you are in doubt.

If you are keen, there are a couple of flags posted on the far side of the volcano. We went to check out the first and while I assume you can reach the second and complete the loop back I cannot confirm that. We walked on the left side of the crater to the first flag and returned.

IS IT SAFE TO VISIT MOUNT BROMO

Yes, it is generally safe to visit Mount Bromo in East Java, Indonesia. Mount Bromo is a popular tourist destination, and thousands of visitors safely explore its stunning landscapes every year. However, as with any outdoor adventure, it’s important to take necessary precautions and be aware of certain factors:

  • Volcanic Activity: Mount Bromo is an active volcano, and volcanic activity can vary. It is essential to stay informed about the volcano’s status and adhere to any warnings or restrictions issued by local authorities or the Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation Center (PVMBG).
  • Weather Conditions: The weather around Mount Bromo can be unpredictable, and fog or poor visibility can occur. It is advisable to check the weather forecast before your visit and be prepared for potential changes in conditions.
  • Trekking and Safety Measures: When trekking to Mount Bromo, it is recommended to follow established trails and stay within designated areas. Dress appropriately, wear sturdy shoes, and bring essentials such as water, sunscreen, and a face mask to protect against volcanic ash.
  • Local Guides: Hiring a local guide is highly recommended, especially for those unfamiliar with the area. They can provide valuable information, ensure your safety, and help navigate the terrain.
  • Transportation: Use reputable transportation services and follow safety guidelines if driving or riding in a vehicle to reach Mount Bromo. Be cautious while crossing the Sea of Sand and driving on steep slopes.
  • Travel Insurance: Consider obtaining travel insurance that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations to ensure peace of mind during your visit.

By staying informed, taking necessary precautions, and following local guidelines, you can enjoy a safe and memorable visit to Mount Bromo.

MOUNT BROMO SUNRISE EQUIPMENT/GEAR LIST

Warm Jacket:  It was very cold in the morning but after the sun came up we were in t-shirts.

Enclosed shoes:  I had Salomon hiking shoes, which were great and I suggest proper hiking shoes as they can be quite slippery. However, my friends just used normal sneakers. Definitely, don’t do this one in flip-flops!

Water and snacks:  There are only a few vendors once you are in the national park. I think I noticed one shop but I’m not sure it was open. Pack your snacks and water. We were there for a long time taking photos and videos so we packed a bit extra. There are Warungs and cafes nearby for when you leave the national park.

Love your content man. Your blog really helped me out during my two months in Indonesia!

I recently did Bromo solo and wanted to share some extra tips with anyone else who lands here trying to figure out how to do so without a guide:

1. Don't just check the weather for clouds/fog/rain, check for wind! First, the wind can make the Sea of Sand pretty miserable to cross. Second, if the wind starts to swirl when you're up at the summit, you can expect some burning eyes and difficulty breathing from all the sulfur.

2. You can walk from Cemoro Lawang to the summit hike. Just head over the the Cemara Indah Hotel and walk into the driveway. You'll see a guard post at the end of the driveway, ignore it even if it's manned. There is a narrow trail that makes its way down to the sea of sand to the right of the guard post. Apparently, it's used by the horses, but plenty of people use it too. Just note that the sand is a little deep and the trail can be a little steep at parts, but it's fairly easy to navigate.

3. King Kong Hill now shows up in Google Maps, so if you're walking to a sunrise viewing point, just pop it in Google Maps to ensure you're walking the right way from town. I was confused at first because Google Maps had me walking a different way than the long line of Jeeps, but I ended up seeing a bunch of others walking in the same direction and we all arrived there before the Jeep tours (left town around 3 AM).

Bromo was one of my favorite experiences during my two months in Indonesia. Thanks again for this post and all of your other Indonesia content. Hope my extra tips help anyone else who is reading this out!

Sunday 1st of October 2023

Hi, Thanks a lot for this post. It was very useful. If it was not for this post and one other online, we would not be able to do it ourselves. And doing it yourself is sooo much better than with a tour. One reason is that by doing it yourself you create your own story, your own experience away from so much commercial stuff going on. Another is that you can avoid the big majority of the crowd.

Since we had time, we did it in 2 days. We booked our stay in Cemoro lawang. First night woke up and started trekking at 3 a.m. We are not so fit, just OK, I guess and made it to the summit of Penjankan (a bit by accident) in 2 hours 15 mins. We were with 20 other people or so. If I had another chance, I would go to the view point one above King Kong. It seemed calmer there.

Second night, we started trekking in 3:30. Walked through the thick fog (it was very nice and exciting) in sea of sand. Afterwards, climbed the stairs and watched the sunset from Bromo itself. It is definitely doable if you have a gps, Google maps, maps.me or something (remember if is dark and foggy). The best thing is there were only 4 or 5 people in the whole crater. You could listen to the pure rumbling of Bromo. Anyway, when we were done, the crowds started to pour in and walked back through the sea of sand.

For those wanting to use a drone. There are no restrictions for using one in the area. My only advise and one which I wish I knew about is to make sure you take-off and land using your hand. The surface around the area is very sandy with volcanic ash, unfortunately, sand got stuck in the gimbal which meant when in flight I kept getting the gimbal obstruction error (40003) causing the camera to fault. So take caution! Otherwise it will ruin your drone flying experience.

Friday 22nd of September 2023

@Chen, yes you need to have special permits and pay to fly your drone as it is considered a comercial activities and Bromo Tengger Semeru is a conservation area. The authority stated that they will seize any comercial equipment without permit, especially after the wild fire.

@Prashant Patel,

Hi There, can I know do you need to pay to operate a drone on Mount Bromo?

Monday 7th of August 2023

@Prashant Patel, Hi Prashanth Looks like you are the one who has most recently visited this place . Need some advice on stay . Could you connect ?

Mount Bromo – active volcano in Indonesia

Bromo is an active volcano, located in East Java, Indonesia, inside the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. Mount Bromo sunrise and a hike to the volcano are the typical postcards views from Indonesia . And it’s no wonder why, as the view is breathtaking. Unfortunately, many people already have realized that, making Mount Bromo one of the most popular tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia.   The massif, where the Bromo volcano belongs to is one of the most visited places on the island.

Bromo volcano is famous not only from its active caldera but also from a spectacular sunrise that you can watch above the valley. In fact, the Mount Bromo sunrise lookout points have an overview of three different volcanoes that are located next to each other. The view is really beautiful and worth an early start. But… because the sunrise over Bromo is so popular it can also get incredibly crowded. Like incredibly.

I know, I know, it can be a bit discouraging and I thought exactly the same when I’ve first heard about it. Luckily, there is a very simple way to enjoy the beautiful Mount Bromo hike on your own without the crowds and to see a beautiful sunrise above the massif for free, without the need of a tour. My tips below help you to have an intimate and peaceful hike to the top of Mount Bromo, help to save you a lot of money and also allow you to choose the best sunrise (and sunset!) viewing spot.

How to organize the mount bromo hike without the tour and with no crowds.

During our 10-day Indonesia trip , we managed to visit beautiful Bali, the paradise Gili islands, climb the fascinating Kawah Ijen volcano in East Java and organize the Mount Bromo hike with sunrise on our own. If we managed it with no problems, you can do it too. You really don’t need a tour for that.

If you are traveling in Indonesia, you can easily combine the visit to Bromo with an amazing hike to the Ijen volcano. Both of the hikes can be done in 3 days (or 2 days with a push). For details on how to climb the Ijen volcano in the best way follow my Kawah Ijen hike guide .

During our Indonesian trip, we were coming back from the direction of Bali , after doing the night hike to the Ijen volcano. You can do the same trip, or the other way round. You can find our 10 days Indonesia itinerary here for a better overview. We chose the route to Mount Bromo through Probolinggo, as it’s the easiest to get there by public transport.

If you’d rather go to Mount Bromo with a tour, this private trip from Surabaya to Mt. Bromo for sunrise is a good choice.

Mount Bromo hike Sea of Sand

#1 How to get from Kawah Ijen (or Bali) to Mount Bromo

If you climbed the Kawah Ijen crater earlier, there’s a high chance that you would want to also visit Bromo. Two volcanoes can be connected by one trip and you don’t need a private tour for that.

After you come back to Banyuwangi (Karangasem) town from Ijen hike, take a train from there to Probolinggo. If you come from Bali, you can take the same train and follow my route from here .

There are normally morning and afternoon trains. If you plan to take a morning train, I recommend booking it in advance online, as they can get pretty full. We took an afternoon train to be able to have some rest in between. The train ride takes around 2 hours and it’s a great opportunity to watch the changing scenery and people on the train.

Mount Bromo hike with no tour, Train to Probolinggo

#2 Probolinggo

Probolinggo is one of the biggest towns close to Bromo, where you can get by train. There is not much to see in Probolinggo itself, so just stay there for the night resting after climbing Ijen or go straight from there to the number 2 on the list. Or you can wander around and look for food markets. We found one on the way back when waiting for our train to Surabaya. Yum!

Where to stay in Probolinggo?

We didn’t have the best experience in the hostel, that we chose, so I am not going to recommend it here.  It’s good to either stay close to the train station, where you arrive, or to the bus station where you leave from. You can try one of those hostels instead, they have a good location and good reviews:

  • Misran Homestay
  • Hary’s Homestay

Food market in Probolinggo, on the way to Bromo hike

#3 Cemoro Lawang

The next step in your journey to Bromo volcano is to get from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang. Cemoro Lawang is a small town in the mountains, located at the base of the Mount Bromo hike and a Bromo sunrise trip. The journey from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang takes around 2h along the windy roads and it’s very picturesque.

How to get to Cemoro Lawang from Probolinggo?

There are several ways of getting to Cemoro Lawang. The best and cheapest option is to take a bemo (a public bus). There is also an option for a taxi or a motorbike. I even tried hitch-hiking but it didn’t quite work there.

#1 Take a bemo

The cheapest way to get to Cemoro Lawang is to take a public bus, called bemo. There are several bemos going from Probolinggo to Cemoro Lawang every day.  But there is a catch.

The bemos leave only when full. Bemo can fit around 15 people and it normally waits until at least 10 people gather up, so the driver can earn some money on the transport.

Sometimes, if there is a lot of people waiting, they can leave quite quickly. Other times, it means waiting for hours for more people to arrive.

You have the option of waiting or you can also pay for the empty seats. You need to calculate if this would make sense for you, as otherwise, you can another way of transport.  Very often travelers, who don’t want to waste a lot of time waiting for more passengers, buy empty seats. The entire vehicle (15 seats) costs 450,000 rupiahs (1 seat is 30 000 rupiahs). It’s probably not the best practice as it teaches the drivers to wait for tourists so they can pay for every seat, but it works if you don’t want to spend the whole day at the bus stop. We were waiting for 1,5h with 3 other people and then we decided to pay the outstanding amount and leave.

If you don’t want to pay for the empty seats, try to arrive earlier in the day as then it’s easier to fill the bus with passengers. If you arrive later in the afternoon, you will have very few chances for the bus to fill up.

Bemos depart from the place near the main bus station in Probolinggo called Terminal Bayuangga  (but not from the station itself). You need to go along the road after you pass the fence to the station and you will see some bemos waiting by the road. There are many local shops and cafes there. If you look on Google Maps, it actually has a name “Public Mini Bus Bromo”

#2 Take a taxi

Another (not a budget) option is to take a taxi. You will frequently hear the taxi drivers offering you a ride when you wait for bemo to depart.

#3 Take ojek/motorbike

We’ve also got offered transport by motorbike or ojek (which is a seat at the back of the motorbike). We were two people, so we didn’t go for it. It’s worth keeping in mind that the way to Cemoro Lawang is quite long (2h in a car) and the roads are windy. The motorbike ride might be very uncomfortable, long, and even dangerous. I do not recommend it.

*From some other reports, I’ve heard that some people were charged 10k IDR for entry to Cemoro Lawang. However, we didn’t need to pay anything.

Mount Bromo hike with no tour

Where to stay in Cemoro Lawang?

I can recommend staying closer to the hiking route to Bromo and close to the path leading to the sunrise viewpoint.

We stayed in Wisma Yog Bromo Homestay . For 386 479 IDR you can get a double room with a shared bathroom , but no breakfast. We had some good food in the warung nearby. Wisma Yog is one of the closest hostels to the non-official, but the widely used route to climb the Bromo crater.

Alternatively, you can choose located next door, Cemara Indah hotel , which has a better standard and is also a great start for Mount Bromo hike and departure point for the Bromo sunrise.

Mount Bromo hike

After arriving in Cemoro Lawang, you can leisurely climb the Mount Bromo crater and admire the active volcano with no crowds.

Mount Bromo is 2,329 meters high, but the hike to the top of the crater is not a difficult one. From the Wisma Yog hotel , where we stayed, it takes around 45 minutes one way. You can easily walk there, no need to take a jeep or a horse. Please, do not take those poor horses.

There is a set of steep steps leading to the top of the Mount Bromo crater, but they are not overly difficult.

Mount Bromo is an active volcano, with recent eruptions happening in 2004, 2010, 2011, and 2015. Therefore always check before traveling what is the current situation.

The landscape looks like from another planet. The experience at the top of the Bromo volcano is also very special – you can hear the inside of the Earth. The sound coming from the middle of the volcano reminds me of the sound of a starting plane. It was my first time hiking the active volcano and it was a great experience.

View to the Sea of Sand and the Hindu temple in Mount Bromo hike

The Sea of Sand

The Bromo volcano lies in the middle of the big plain, which is called the Sea of Sand. It’s a big area, that looks like a desert and it’s filled with the fine volcanic sand from the previous eruptions of Mount Bromo. In order to reach Mount Bromo, you need to cross the Sea of Sand.   On the way to the volcano, you’ll also pass a Hindu temple.

Mount Bromo hike without the crowds

The secret to the Mount Bromo hike without the crowds is to go for a hike in the afternoon or late morning when all the organized tours leave.

That’s it! Easy, right? ;-)

The typical itinerary for the Mount Bromo organized tour is as follows. First, they drive for Mount Bromo sunrise to one of the famous viewpoints like King Kong Hill. After sunrise, all the tours go together for a Mount Bromo’s hike to the crater. They pass through the Park gate which is located somewhere at the beginning of the Sea of Sand. That’s where they normally need to pay the foreigner entrance fee of 220,000 IDR on weekdays or 320,000 IDR on weekends & holidays. We haven’t seen that gate and we’ve been told that there is rarely someone there in the afternoon anyway. I guess they make all their money from the insane amount of tours in the morning.

Then, everyone from the organized Mount Bromo tours goes up the crater.

You can imagine the number of people that are there at the same time – insane . It is not enjoyable and not very safe, either. We were watching the jeeps driving up the hill to the sunrise and it was a never-ending line of cars. Hundreds and hundreds of cars were going to one single place at the same time. I don’t know about you, but for me, this is far from enjoyable and just sounds like a nightmare. That’s what we wanted to avoid. And it worked!

When you go to do the Mount Bromo hike after all of the tours leave, it’s only you, the rumbling volcano, and a few other people. Great experience!

Mount Bromo hike, on top of the crater

Follow these steps for the free Mount Bromo hike without the crowds:

1. Find the local entrance to Mount Bromo Park.

The entrance is a non-official one and it’s used by the local horseman. It’s located on the right side at the back of the Cemara Indah hotel (which is just next to Wisma Yog Homestay). There’s a security booth for the hotel just next to it, but when we walked around several times, nobody told us anything. The hotel is located on the hill, so the path takes you straight down to the Sea of sand. You can clearly see the volcano from the top of the hill, next to the hotel, and you can also easily see it when you reach the Sea of Sands, so you will not have any problems with navigation. Walking to the crater from there should take up to an hour.

2. Cross the Sea of Sand in the direction of the volcano. There are some paths you can take, but really it’s just the massive area full of volcanic ash, so you can just cut through and direct yourself toward the volcano on the horizon.

3. On the way, you will pass by the Hindu temple. It was closed when we were there.

4. Pass on the left side of the temple and go towards the left, where you can see a small Bromo crater. The path up the Mount Bromo crater goes uphill and then closer to the crater it changes into a set of steep steps. It is not difficult at all.

5. From the top of the volcano, you have amazing views of the surrounding area and the other 2 volcanoes inside the Bromo massif. You can also clearly see inside the crater. Sometimes the sulfur cloud can be quite thick and the rumbling of the volcano is very loud. The sensation is just crazy!

6. After the Mount Bromo hike, go to sleep early as you need to wake up for another sunrise.

Tip:   Take something to protect your eyes and mouth, as well as the camera from dust. If there is even a little bit of wind, the dust will be everywhere.

Steps to the top of the Mount Bromo crater during the Mount Bromo hike

How to find the best place for Mount Bromo sunrise?

There are several different hills on each side of Cemoro Lawang town, that are good for watching Mount Bromo sunrise. It’s just a matter of finding the best one for you and avoiding the crowds.

We decided to walk to the closest hill, where we found a perfect spot.

In order to catch Mount Bromo sunrise on time, start hiking early. If you stay close to Cemara Indah Hotel, do not leave later than 3 am. We started even earlier, as I wanted to take some night photos before sunrise.

  • Start at Cemara Indah Hotel . It’s the same place where you passed the day before when going down to the Sea of Sand and then hiking to Mount Bromo.
  • From there, follow the road up the mountain. On the night of our climb, it was entirely dark, so we could barely see our surroundings. From time to time there was only a motorbike passing us by. It’s good to have a torch handy.
  • After around an hour, you will see the first lookout point for Mount Bromo sunrise with locals preparing food and tea for tourists. It’s located on the bend in the road. You can see the volcano from there, but the view is a bit obstructed by the trees, so I recommend going further on.
  • After 15 minutes, you will get to another lookout point, which is called the Seruni viewpoint. You will recognize it immediately from the concrete platforms. The best viewing point for Mount Bromo sunrise is located on top of those platforms. We were thinking about hiking further, but the view from where we were was really good (see photos), so we stayed. If you climb to the roof, which is not difficult, you will have a comfortable sitting position. Closer to the sunrise, the place got really crowded, but our spot was still with the best view. In my opinion, there is no point of hiking more and you can settle on the top of the roof in Seruni point for the best view without any obstacles.
  • There are also other lookout points further on the way. The famous one is the viewpoint at Mount Penanjakan 1 and 2. It is, however, usually crowded and full of jeeps, as they can drive all the way up.  I do not recommend going there. We were observing hundreds and hundreds of jeeps driving through the Sea of Sand at night to get to that viewpoint for the sunrise. You also have an option of walking to the viewpoint called King Kong Hill and Love Hill.

Mount Bromo sunrise spot

After sunrise, go back to the hotel and catch a bus back to Probolinggo. It’s the same story that was on the way there, so the bemos only leave when there are enough people. However, it is much easier to fill them up, as many people come back to town after sunrise. From Probolinggo you can get a train to Surabaya. There is an airport in Surabaya with connecting flights to Jakarta.

Not fussed about Mount Bromo sunrise? Try the sunset instead!

Honestly, although I always prefer sunrises, mainly for their tranquility and peacefulness of the waking up world, when it comes to Mount Bromo, I would recommend the sunset instead. Everyone knows how crazy the Mount Bromo sunrise is, so if you want to entirely avoid the whole hassle of waking up at night, walking to the viewpoint, and still being surrounded by other people, then you can just sleep in and watch the sunset in the evening. The sunset can be viewed from many places, even in the center of Cemoro Lawang town.

We found a nice spot, where they were also selling Bakso (an Indonesian type of meatball), so we had dinner with a view. This lookout point is located just in the town center. On the junction coming from Cemara Indah Hotel, you need to turn right and follow the road up. After a few minutes, you will see a big square with a view of Mount Bromo. You can walk a bit further, taking the path to the left, in a direction to the grassy hill, where you can have an even better view. It can also be a good Mount Bromo sunrise viewpoint, but I expect it to be crowded as there is another hotel just next to it.

Mount Bromo hike do it yourself

Key info for the Mount Bromo hike and sunrise

  • You can easily do the Mount Bromo hike with no crowds and for free. You can also go for the Mount Bromo sunrise view for free and with fewer people than when you choose an organized tour.
  • Cemoro Lawang is the town at the base of Mount Bromo.
  • Mount Bromo entrance fee is 220,000 IDR on weekdays, and 320,000 IDR on weekends & holidays for foreigners, but it’s often not collected in the afternoon and the gate is located far from the route described above.
  • There are several hills on every side of Cemoro Lawang town, good to watch the Bromo sunrise. Don’t go where everyone else goes.
  • Stay in the hotel which is located close to the route for the Mount Bromo hike and the sunrise path. I can recommend a budget option Wisma Yog or mid-range Cemara Indah Hotel.
  • Consider doing sunset instead of sunrise for a quieter experience.
  • Enjoy the beautiful Mount Bromo hike without the crowds!

What to pack for Bromo

Below are the necessary items that you need to have for your Bromo adventure:

  • Sunglasses – the sun is very strong, and the dust can easily get into your eyes. Check UV sunglasses at a good price here.
  • Hiking shoes  or sneakers
  • Suncream  – I use  this suncream as it has great protection and good skin care.
  • Small  day backpack
  • Scarf for the dust
  • Hat to protect from the sun
  • First aid kit  – you never know what might happen (like to me in  Svalbard ), so better be safe
  • Torch for walking for the sunrise – the best is   a head torch , so you can keep your hands free
  • Water – I recommend a reusable water bottle or Filter bottle that you can fill in and save money and reduce plastic usage. If you don’t have access to refilling water, then you can use a  water bottle with a filter like LifeStraw  to have clean water on the go.  Check the price here .
  • Some warm clothes – long-sleeve shirt/jumper/light waterproof jacket (for example packable rain jacket ) in case of rain. It wasn’t cold in Bromo in October, but in the early morning, it can get chilly.
  • Camera – I took pictures in this post with my Fuji X-E1 mirrorless camera . I often used the landscape lens – Samyang 12 mm, F 2.0 lens. If you take photos with your phone, consider getting a selfie stick and tripod in one .
