Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.

Miles of sun-kissed farmland and crystal clear lakes frame the view out your windshield while some of the slower scenic routes — from the rolling Flint Hills of Kansas and Ozark mountains in Missouri to the tranquil covered hedges of Indiana and thundering waterfalls in Minnesota — can be seen just off the exit ramp.

No matter if it's a week-long journey around the rocky shores of Lake Superior or a quick day trip to a local state park, the United States' middle corridor has plenty to offer outdoors enthusiasts and backyard explorers alike. Here, some of the best Midwest road trips to get your wheels turning, thanks, in part, to the folks at BestLife.com .

1. Duluth to Grand Portage State Park, Minnesota

Start : Duluth, Minnesota

End : Grand Portage State Park, Minnesota

Distance : 145 miles

From Duluth, drive Highway 61 alongside the rocky beach of America's largest Great Lake, Lake Superior. The trip up Minnesota's North Shore is short — just under 150 miles — but there's plenty to see. If it's summer, explore the beaches with black sands (Black Beach) and pink pebbles (Iona's Beach), or pull over at Gooseberry Falls State Park  to take a dip in the pool at the base of a spectacular  waterfall  or hike the 18 miles of trails. There are several other panoramas along the way, including your last stop at  Grand Portage State Park by Canada's border — as well as gorgeous views via a two-mile gondola ride in Lutsen. 

2. Badlands to Black Hills, South Dakota

Start : Badlands, South Dakota

End : Black Hills, South Dakota

Distance : 130 miles

The Badlands has an otherworldly feel to it thanks to its multicolored peaks and vast volcanic rock landscape. Go slow and take your time meandering down the 40-mile scenic byway (SD 240), especially during dusk when the national park turns molten gold and dusty pink. From here, continue on to Rapid City for an overnight before exploring the  Black Hills National Forest the next day. This 1.2 million-acre region is home to some of America's must-see sites, such as Mount Rushmore and the Crazy Horse Memorial. Further north beyond Sturgis, Bear Butte State Park  is a beautiful place for a hike, and a sacred spot for Native Americans.

3. Route 66, Illinois

Start : Chicago, Illinois

End : Collinsville, Illinois

Distance : 300 miles

Route 66 is one of the quintessential American road trips, and no chapter of it is so charming — and underrated — as its path through Illinois, where there's enough retro kitsch to give you Instagram content for days. The Mother Road begins at the Route 66 sign on E. Jackson Boulevard in Chicago. You'll meander 300 miles south to St. Louis, passing 1940s diners, antique stores, gas stations, and drive-in movie theaters straight out of a vintage advertisement. Pro tip: Keep an eye out for the almost 30-foot-tall Gemini Giant  in Wilmington, Illinois.

4. Milwaukee to the Wisconsin Dells, Wisconsin

Start : Milwaukee, Wisconsin

End : Wisconsin Dells

Distance : 121 miles

Kick off the journey in Milwaukee, Wisconsin's brewing capital, where you can tour the  MillerCoors Brewery  and  Pabst Mansion , the former 19th-century home of Pabst Brewing founder Captain Frederick Pabst. Then, three hours northwest, the Waterpark Capital of the World is the perfect family-friendly getaway. A few of the  Wisconsin Dells  parks merit superlatives: America's largest outdoor  water park  (Noah's Ark), America's largest resort water park (Wilderness Waterpark Resort), and America's largest wave pool (also at Wilderness Waterpark Resort) lie along your route. However, the outdoors activities in the area make it an autumn and spring destination, too: Be sure to stop by the  Wisconsin Deer Park , where kids can feed Wasa crackers to free-roaming deer. 5. Flint Hills, Kansas

Start : Flint Hills, Kansas

End : Wichita, Kansas

Distance : 190 miles

The 190-mile trip through the endless undulations of the Flint Hills is a spectacular sight almost any time of year, though spring and fall show the area's colors at their best. Soak up the scenery at the 11,000-acre Tallgrass Prairie National Preserve  outside of Strong City, or take a detour on Rte. 901 to visit the 8,600-acre  Konza Prairie research preserve . Head another two hours south to arrive in Wichita, Kansas' largest city that features craft breweries, a Frank Lloyd Wright house museum, and striking street art in the Douglas Design District.

6. Parke County, Indiana

Start : Tangier, Indiana

End : Bridgeton, Indiana

Distance : 55 miles

Indiana's Parke County winds through 31 covered bridges, making it a spectacularly scenic drive — especially in October, when the Covered Bridge Festival draws local artisans, craftspeople, and farmers to showcase their produce and goods during peak fall foliage. Make sure to look out for the horse-drawn carriages frequently spotted in the countryside as well as the 19th-century general stores, mills, and log cabins in small towns like Mansfield and Bridgeton. 

7. Historic Hills Scenic Byway, Iowa

Start : Moravia, Iowa

End : Donnellson, Iowa

Distance : 110 miles

This route is full of historic sites, including Iowa's oldest courthouse and the state's only Civil War battlefield. But this area of Iowa also boasts three state parks, including a resort state park. It's worth taking a couple of days to drive the 110 miles of the highway, since there's so much to do, from fishing on the River Water trail and canoeing in the Lacey-Keosauqua State Park  to checking out the 100-plus Amish and Mennonite businesses around Drakesville and Bloomsfield.

8. U.S. 12 Heritage Trail, Michigan

Start : New Buffalo, Michigan

End : Detroit, Michigan

Distance : 180 miles

For one of the Midwest's quirkier road trips, consider the US 12 Heritage Trail , a.k.a. “Michigan's Largest Garage Sale.” Admittedly, this one takes some timing — the sale happens over a long weekend in August each year — but it's worth clearing your calendar for. Over three days, vendors line a 180-mile stretch of highway from New Buffalo to Detroit selling everything from antiques to homegrown vegetables. And no, the “heritage trail” distinction has nothing to do with Americans' love of a good bargain: It refers to the ancient Native American  trail the highway now covers (even further back, it was a part of a mastodon corridor, which drew the indigenous people who hunted them).

9. The Ozarks, Missouri

Start : Sullivan, Missouri

End : Lake Ozark, Missouri

Distance : 310 miles

With about 310 miles of routes and eye-popping side trips, Missouri's beautiful Ozark mountains, forests, and lakes offer up a bounty of natural attractions. Explore the  Onondaga Caves , the remnants of a sea that once covered the region, camp in the 1.5-million acre  Mark Twain National Forest , or bear witness to history at the  Indian Trail Conservation Area , which includes a stretch of the Trail of Tears. 10. Minnesota River Valley Scenic Byway

Start : Blakely, Minnesota

End : Ortonville, Minnesota

Distance : 287 miles

This 287-mile trip is a highlight reel of Minnesota's rivers and waterfronts. You can see it from behind the steering wheel, or make a pitstop and hike the trails in the six state parks that intercept  the byway . The area has a rich history as homeland to the Dakota people, whose name for the area is “Mni Sóta Maḳoce” (“the land where the water reflects the sky”); learn about their traditions and history at the  Lower Sioux Agency . There are also farm museums, historical homes, and Minnesota's oldest brewery,  August Schell Brewing Company .

11. Antique Alley, Indiana

Start : Richmond, Indiana

End : Knightstown or Portland, Indiana

Distance : 80 miles

T he so-called  “Antique Alley” of eastern Indiana is an 80-mile loop where more than 1,200 antique dealers have set up shop. The Historic Richmond Depot District, a thriving neighborhood in Richmond with some great restaurants, is worth an afternoon lunch stop before setting out to shop. Choose from two different trails: Trail one takes you from Richmond west to Knightstown via the Historic National Road U.S. 40, then back to your starting point on SR 38. The star attraction: Cambridge City, with two blocks of shops including 13 antique stores. The other trail takes you north from Richmond to Portland on US 27, with 25 antiques shops dotting the roadside.

12. Lake Superior Circle Tour

End : Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan

Distance : 1,300 miles

If you have some time, take the long way around Lake Superior on the Circle Tour , a 1,300-mile stretch of stunning shoreline in Wisconsin, Ontario, Minnesota, and Michigan. Mid-June is a great time to catch festivals before summer's peak tourist season begins, but if don't mind cooler temps, late September is ideal for seeing the leaves change. If you can't make the entire tour, any of the individual state segments merit a vacation of their own, as you can see in the video we did below for Superior's Wisconsin and Minnesota north shore.

East to West Travel Trailer Floor Plans

The most compact Silver Lake camper is perfect for those towing with a smaller truck or SUV. With a gross vehicle weight rating of less than 5,000 pounds, you should be able to tow this with a vehicle like a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Once you’re at the campsite, the floor plan is extremely versatile for a camper under 22 feet. 

That’s largely thanks to the queen-sized Murphy bed. Drop it down in the evenings to enjoy a much more comfortable sleep than you’d get in a tent. Then, flip it up and out of the way during the day to open the floor plan and enjoy more living space. Plus, it becomes a sofa during the day for added seating.

Despite the trailer’s small size, the kitchen boasts everything you’d need to cook and stay protected from the elements. That includes a 10.7 cubic-foot 12V refrigerator, a two-burner gas cooktop, and a microwave. You also get a booth dinette for a cozy place to eat, which we love because some small campers like this will rely on a removable table for dining instead, which is less sturdy.

Silver Lake 2400BH

The smallest dual-axle Silver Lake bunkhouse travel trailer is designed with families in mind, combining a comfortable central living area with separate sleeping spaces at either end. The kids can enjoy the bunks next to the rear bathroom while the parents enjoy the privacy of the primary suite with a king-sized bed.

In many cases, floor plans with a jackknife sofa and a booth dinette are only found on travel trailers with at least one slide-out. But East to West reimagined this floor plan to provide both seating options without a slide-out, minimizing the required setup and potential maintenance on this Silver Lake camper.

This East to West travel trailer floor plan offers ample storage, a complete RV kitchen with an expansive 12-volt refrigerator, a tankless water heater, and pre-wiring for a rear ladder, backup camera, and roof-mounted solar panels.

Silver Lake 2500RD

Moving up in size, this rear dinette East to West travel trailer floor plan is somewhat of a rarity in the RV world. Other rear dinette layouts exist, but they aren’t as common. Fewer still include enough space for a king-sized bed in the primary bedroom.

The 2500RD ’s rear dining area is filled with a massive U-shaped dinette. That dinette style converts to a larger sleeping area than a traditional booth dinette, allowing you to turn it into the perfect bed for kids or guests. 

With a single slide-out on the utility side of the camper, East to West designed this layout to feel incredibly spacious. The kitchen has ample counterspace, there’s a TV mount prep across from the jackknife sofa, and an electric fireplace provides ambiance and additional heat on cooler evenings.

The final Silver Lake travel trailer on our list features one of the industry’s most unique and versatile bunk rooms. Situated in the rear of the floor plan, the bunk room in the 3250QB can comfortably sleep four, making it perfect for a visiting family with kids or your kids and their camping buddies. 

When the beds are all set up, the bunk room has one queen bed and two upper bunks. But the room can be converted for lounging or gear storage. The upper bunks flip up, and the queen bed becomes a comfortable sofa. Because they thoughtfully included a cargo door on the utility side of this East to West travel trailer, it’s easy to load camping chairs, a griddle, small kid’s bikes, and any other cargo you need. 

Don’t let the unique bunk room steal the show. You also get a primary bedroom with a king-sized bed, a large kitchen with an L-shaped countertop, and a jackknife sofa and booth dinette in the utility side slide-out. 

Best East to West Longitude RV Floor Plans

New to the RV landscape in 2024, the East to West Longitude travel trailer lineup now includes six floor plans, with two being new in 2025. Let’s review our top three Longitude campers, including a rear living, a front kitchen, and a bunkhouse layout. 

Longitude 310RL

• Length: 35’10”
• Dry Weight: 7,708 pounds
• Cargo Capacity: 3,572 pounds

With an L-shaped couch taking up the entire rear living and entertainment space, the Longitude 310RL is the rare travel trailer floor plan that feels more like a fifth wheel. You don’t often get a rear lounge area this spacious and comfortable in a bumper pull camper, but this East to West travel trailer floor plan has a few tricks up its sleeve.

Starting in that rear living area, you’ll find hidden storage behind the TV. In the dining area, you get a combination booth dinette with freestanding chairs. In the primary suite, you get a large slide-out that spans the bedroom and the bathroom, doubling as a wardrobe and a linen closet. 

With a second slide-out on the utility side in the kitchen, you get abundant space for cooking, dining, and relaxing. This rear living travel trailer features luxury kitchen features like an air fryer, a three-burner gas cooktop, and a 10.7 cubic-foot 12V refrigerator, among others. While it’s a larger East to West travel trailer floor plan, this is still designed with couples’ luxury in mind.

Longitude 230FK

For a more compact option in the Longitude lineup, the 230FK boasts a front kitchen layout with a tri-fold sofa in the single slide-out. This layout’s main benefit is the abundant cooking space, complete with an automotive-grade front window that lets natural light pour in while you’re preparing meals. 

However, the only downside is that your primary dining area will be that tri-fold sofa with a removable table, although it is possible to upgrade to theater seating. If you’re a camping couple that prefers to eat outside anyway, this might not be a deal breaker, especially considering the other elements of this East to West travel trailer floor plan. 

The spacious bathroom at the center of the floor plan has a single entry, and you don’t have to walk through it to reach the primary bedroom, which features a queen-sized bed. Speaking of outside dining, you won’t lack shade with a 19’ power awning. You even get a small mini fridge in an exterior compartment for your camping beverages. 

Longitude 285BH

• Length: 33’9”
• Dry Weight: 7,628 pounds
• Cargo Capacity: 2,052 pounds

Our final Longitude travel trailer floor plan is a smart bunkhouse camper with versatile storage. While the double-over-double bunks provide comfortable sleeping space for up to four small humans, this area’s conversion makes the 285BH unique. 

When you’re packing up, simply flip the bottom bunk up and you have a huge additional storage area. They even built a rear cargo door at the back, aligning to that storage space and making it easy to slide in a kayak, small bikes, camping chairs, or other outdoor gear. 

We also love the dual entry doors. One steps directly into the living area while the other enters the rear bathroom. Kids or guests can access a bathroom without tracking dirt through the entire floor plan. Plus, the living area includes a tri-fold sofa and a booth dinette for plenty of seating on family movie nights.

Favorite East to West Alta Travel Trailers

East to West’s Alta travel trailer lineup includes 15 floor plans, with two being toy hauler travel trailers, two being Alta “Xtreme” models built for all-season camping, and the remaining 11 in their traditional lineup. Let’s review our top three, including a bunkhouse, a rear bath, and a Murphy bed layout. 

Alta 2800KBH

Families with larger toys will love the rear storage door on the Alta 2800KBH . You won’t lack sleeping space with double-over-double bunks (once your gear is unloaded). Don’t leave your furry companions at home with this East to West travel trailer floor plan, as it includes a hidden pet dish for feeding time. 

The outside is packed with camping conveniences: an outside kitchen with a mini fridge and a griddle, a 21’ powered awning with LED lights, a pass through storage compartment, dual entry doors, and an outdoor shower.

Alta 2600KRB

The full-width rear washroom may be the main highlight of this East to West rear bath travel trailer but don’t overlook the kitchen. While the extended rear bathroom boasts a larger-than-normal RV shower with a skylight and a dual mirrored medicine cabinet, the spacious kitchen and living area are where you’ll likely spend most of your time. 

When entering the single entry door, you’ll find a large closet immediately to your right. Thanks to the hanging rod and versatile shelving, you can use it as a secondary wardrobe or your pantry. The kitchen has plenty of additional dry goods storage and a 10.7 cubic-foot residential-inspired refrigerator for your perishables.

Across from the kitchen, a tri-fold sofa and booth dinette come standard. But you can upgrade to theater seating and/or a freestanding dinette if you choose. Moving to the front of the floor plan, the primary bedroom features a king-sized bed, prep for a TV mount, dual wardrobes and drawers, nightstands, overhead storage, and creative under bed cargo space.

Alta 1900MMK

• Length: 25’
• Dry Weight: 5,463 pounds
• Cargo Capacity: 2,147 pounds

The Alta 1900MMK is one of the most compact and lightweight campers in this lineup. This East to West Alta floor plan features a Murphy bed at the front of the layout, which seamlessly converts to a cozy sofa for day lounging. 

The single slide-out houses a tri-fold sofa and comes with a removable dining table. That table can move wherever you need it, providing versatility for eating, meal prep, card games, or anything else you desire. Plus, the four-door pantry is just to the rear of the tri-fold sofa, giving you easy access to snacks before movie nights. 

The kitchen boasts a massive countertop that runs from just behind the entry door to the rear wall. Prep space for meals certainly isn’t lacking in this Alta travel trailer, and they even thought through smart AC outlet locations throughout the kitchen so you can easily plug in your kitchen appliances without relocating them between uses.
