Discover the finest writing contests of 2024 for fiction and non-fiction authors — including short story competitions, essay writing competitions, poetry contests, and many more. Updated weekly, these contests are vetted by Reedsy to weed out the scammers and time-wasters. If you’re looking to stick to free writing contests, simply use our filters as you browse.

Why you should submit to writing contests

Submitting to poetry competitions and free writing contests in 2024 is absolutely worth your while as an aspiring author: just as your qualifications matter when you apply for a new job, a writing portfolio that boasts published works and award-winning pieces is a great way to give your writing career a boost. And not to mention the bonus of cash prizes!

That being said, we understand that taking part in writing contests can be tough for emerging writers. First, there’s the same affliction all writers face: lack of time or inspiration. Entering writing contests is a time commitment, and many people decide to forego this endeavor in order to work on their larger projects instead — like a full-length book. Second, for many writers, the chance of rejection is enough to steer them clear of writing contests.

But we’re here to tell you that two of the great benefits of entering writing contests happen to be the same as those two reasons to avoid them.

When it comes to the time commitment: yes, you will need to expend time and effort in order to submit a quality piece of writing to competitions. That being said, having a hard deadline to meet is a great motivator for developing a solid writing routine.

Think of entering contests as a training session to become a writer who will need to meet deadlines in order to have a successful career. If there’s a contest you have your eye on, and the deadline is in one month, sit down and realistically plan how many words you’ll need to write per day in order to meet that due date — and don’t forget to also factor in the time you’ll need to edit your story!

For tips on setting up a realistic writing plan, check out this free, ten-day course : How to Build a Rock-Solid Writing Routine.

In regards to the fear of rejection, the truth is that any writer aspiring to become a published author needs to develop relatively thick skin. If one of your goals is to have a book traditionally published, you will absolutely need to learn how to deal with rejection, as traditional book deals are notoriously hard to score. If you’re an indie author, you will need to adopt the hardy determination required to slowly build up a readership.

The good news is that there’s a fairly simple trick for learning to deal with rejection: use it as a chance to explore how you might be able to improve your writing.

In an ideal world, each rejection from a publisher or contest would come with a detailed letter, offering construction feedback and pointing out specific tips for improvement. And while this is sometimes the case, it’s the exception and not the rule.

Still, you can use the writing contests you don’t win as a chance to provide yourself with this feedback. Take a look at the winning and shortlisted stories and highlight their strong suits: do they have fully realized characters, a knack for showing instead of telling, a well-developed but subtly conveyed theme, a particularly satisfying denouement?

The idea isn’t to replicate what makes those stories tick in your own writing. But most examples of excellent writing share a number of basic craft principles. Try and see if there are ways for you to translate those stories’ strong points into your own unique writing.

Finally, there are the more obvious benefits of entering writing contests: prize and publication. Not to mention the potential to build up your readership, connect with editors, and gain exposure.

Resources to help you win writing competitions in 2024

Every writing contest has its own set of submission rules. Whether those rules are dense or sparing, ensure that you follow them to a T. Disregarding the guidelines will not sway the judges’ opinion in your favor — and might disqualify you from the contest altogether.

Aside from ensuring you follow the rules, here are a few resources that will help you perfect your submissions.

After you submit to a writing competition in 2024

It’s exciting to send a piece of writing off to a contest. However, once the initial excitement wears off, you may be left waiting for a while. Some writing contests will contact all entrants after the judging period — whether or not they’ve won. Other writing competitions will only contact the winners.

Here are a few things to keep in mind after you submit:

Many writing competitions don’t have time to respond to each entrant with feedback on their story. However, it never hurts to ask! Feel free to politely reach out requesting feedback — but wait until after the selection period is over.

If you’ve submitted the same work to more than one writing competition or literary magazine, remember to withdraw your submission if it ends up winning elsewhere.

After you send a submission, don’t follow it up with a rewritten or revised version. Instead, ensure that your first version is thoroughly proofread and edited. If not, wait until the next edition of the contest or submit the revised version to other writing contests.

THE CONTEST

What does america mean to you.

In 2026, the United States will mark our Semiquincentennial: the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Today’s young people are the leaders, innovators, and thinkers who will shape the next 250 years — and it’s important their voices are heard as we commemorate this historic milestone.

America’s Field Trip is a contest that invites students across the country in grades 3–12 to be part of America’s 250th anniversary by sharing their perspectives on what America means to them — with the opportunity to earn an unforgettable field trip experience at some of the nation’s most iconic historic and cultural landmarks.

Students are asked to submit writing or original artwork in response to the contest’s prompt: “What does America mean to you?”

Resources for Applicants

Thought starters.

Below are some questions and prompts that may be helpful for students to consider as starting points as they prepare their submissions. Students are not expected to specifically address any or all of these questions in their responses.

  • What has shaped America over the past 250 years? Think about the impact of individuals, ideas, documents, historical movements, and events and how they have affected the growth and development of our country.
  • How has America influenced your family? Think about opportunities and benefits your family has enjoyed, challenges your family has faced, and service your family has given. Consider previous generations too–not just your immediate family.
  • What do you hope for America’s future? Think about what you hope the country can achieve and how you can help make it a reality.

Additional thought starters for high school students:

  • Read and reflect on the first two paragraphs of the Declaration of Independence.
  • What do the key ideas, values, and promises represented in the Declaration of Independence mean to you? What do you think they meant to Americans in 1776?

Do’s and Don’ts

  • Be creative!
  • Reflect on your own American story and that of your family and community.
  • Talk to your teachers, parents, and community to get ideas for your entry.
  • Let your personality shine through!
  • Include your full name, address, e-mail address, telephone number, age or school name in your entry.
  • Submit work you didn’t personally create entirely on your own. DO NOT USE AI TOOLS.
  • Develop an entry as a group or team – each entry can only come from one student.
  • Include names or images of your family members or friends.
  • Include copyrighted materials (for example: celebrity names, names of sports teams, song lyrics written by others, photos, brand names or logos) in your entry. DO NOT PLAGIARIZE OR USE OTHER PERSONS’ WORK.
  • Feel you have to only address our country’s past — you can talk about America’s future too.

Writing Competition for Kids 2024

The writing competition 2024 is OPEN now!

Yeah! It's this time of the year again! Our Kids World Travel Guide competition for young writers is now open!

Here the details for our Writing Competition for 2024!

essay competition 2024

Kids World Travel Guide's 9th annual essay competition

2024 Theme: 'My Culture - Who I am'

This year we want to learn more about each other. And what better way than sharing our passions, favourite rituals and the traditions we celebrate? Tell us who you are. What drives you? What are your favourite places, favourite festivals and popular rituals in your family or community? How can we understand you better and learn from each other?

The world is changing constantly. People move from place to place, some because they have to as they have been displaced from their home countries due to war, hunger or natural disasters, others because they want to find jobs or follow family members in other parts of the world or simply want to travel, learn and experience how other people live.

More than ever before, struggles and unrest even in our local communities create challenges, wherever we live.

Learning about our own upbringing and cultural background as well as researching other countries and people will help us understand diverse belief systems, diverse religious and cultural practises and value different perceptions.

Researching our own favourite traditions, rituals and practises as well as those of minorities living in our own country will also make us understand what drives our cultural identity.

Welcoming newcomers to our communities also shows us the similarities between people of different backgrounds and this understanding will help create a more peaceful and better world for us all.

Diversity is key for living in a peaceful world where we all practise respect, tolerance and kindness. Remember, we all are one!

Writing Competition 2024 Theme: 'My Culture - Who I am'

Learning about our own traditions and culture as well as other people's belief systems, religions and cultural practises is a great way to look deeper into ourselves and realise what shapes our identity but it also helps to see not only differences but also similarities with others.

We must know ourselves and our culture before we can meaningfully connect and interact with others. Willingness to understand and learn as well as acting with respect and kindness are what is needed more in our world.

If we learn to live with others peacefully and respectfully, our world will become a better place!

Now over to you, share your fascinating stories with us and our young readers once again.

Join our annual writing competition on Kids-World-Travel-Guide.com! Write about your experiences, insights and favourite traditions and rituals or share inspirational stories about peace makers in your midst and let all know what gives you hope and makes you happy thinking about our human environment!

Be creative and above all keep it positive!  Tell us about all the wonderful things you already experienced or hope to experience in future, share your ideas on living peacefully with newcomers to your community.

You can also research about other countries' people and cultures or tell us fascinating community initiatives and inspiring ideas and people in your communities but don’t forget to add in your essay at least some paragraphs about yourself or your personal dreams for the future of our world.

Junior Category: 8 - 11 years

Essay length: minimum 300 words - maximum 500 words - AI composed essays will not be accepted!

  • What are endangered practises, ethnic groups or languages? Why is the survival of some languages or groups endangered?
  • Do you have a favourite book or author that share info about culture, traditions and identity.
  • Do you know about a famous peace maker or can you name influential and inspiring people who work with different groups in your community? Special work, goals and achievements?
  • What kind of tourism promotes cultural understanding?
  • What impact does tourism have on cultures, ethnic groups or languages?
  • Which countries are famous and known for cultural sites or inspirational places or worship?
  • Do you know more about some places of worship and can share your insights about inspirational religious traditions with others?
  • Which community initiative bring you hope?
  • How can we build a better world for us all? How can we share our communities with newcomers and people who move from other countries?
  • Are you part of a refugee initiative? Please share your interest with us and tell us about your activities in regards to integrating newcomers to your community.
  • Which humanitarian efforts inspire you? Are there any heroes or heroines that you admire?
  • Do you have a favourite book about religion, tradition, rituals and ethnic groups that you would recommend? Is there a story people should read to be inspired? Provide a short summary and tell us the reason why the book could be of good use to others.
  • Which quote or proverb does motivate and inspire you? Please also research the author of the quote and give us an overview about the person and the saying, the reason for the quote and what it means to you personally. Here are some famous proverbs which might also provide you with some ideas for your essay entry:

“A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people.” Mahatma Gandhi

“we may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race.” kofi anan, "a person is a person through other persons." desmond tutu.

Quote 1: "A nation's culture resides in the hearts and in the soul of its people" by Mahatma Gandhi.

Quote 2: "We may have different religions, different languages, different colored skin, but we all belong to one human race" by Kofi Annan.

Quote 3: The Spirit of Ubuntu: 'A person is a person through other persons'." by Desmond Tutu

Now it’s up to you: Be a writer, journalist, poet or artist, let us know what culture means to you and share your inspirational story! Tell us who you are!

The topic is quite broad this year again, so we trust you will be motivated to share your story! Maybe some of you want to write more than one essay now or write the essay with a partner or group? Please let us know if this is the case...

Now we wish you all a wonderful time planning and writing your essay!

And remember: The deadline is strictly

1 October 2024 (10:00 pm/ 22:00 UTC)

Rendell Center launches essay contest for classrooms

WPVI logo

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Students in South Philadelphia helped launch a special essay contest on Tuesday in honor of National Constitution Day, and your classroom can participate.

Fourth and fifth graders at Edwin M. Stanton School are participating in the citizenship challenge.

The Rendell Center kicked off the six-week essay competition asking students to weigh in on whether they agree with the Electoral College system.

Former Action News anchor Jim Gardner held a discussion with the students about that topic.

The challenge is now open for fourth and fifth grade classrooms across our area.

To learn how you can participate, visit: rendellcenter.org/citizenship-challenge-2024

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Strategic Essay Competitions

NDU Press hosted the final round of judging on May 16–17, 2024, during which 27 faculty judges from 16 participating professional military education (PME) institutions selected the best entries in each category. There were 97 submissions in this year’s three categories.

The 43rd annual competitions were intended to stimulate new approaches to coordinated civilian and military action from a broad spectrum of civilian and military students. Essays address U.S. Government structure, policies, capabilities, resources, and/or practices and provide creative, feasible ideas on how best to orchestrate the core competencies of our national security institution.

The purpose of this competition is to stimulate thinking about national security strategy, promote well-written research, and contribute to a broader security debate among professionals. NDU Press manages the competition in three phases, with assistance from coordinators and faculty judges representing each participating PME school. First, the schools conduct internal competitions and submit their best essays to NDU Press. Second, judges evaluate nominated essays from other schools virtually. Finally, judges travel to NDU for the final round conference to determine winners in each category.

For all 2024 competitions, the winning essays will be published in Joint Force Quarterly 115 (4th Quarter 2024), the CJCS professional military, interagency, and security studies journal. Authors of the first-, second-, and third-place essays will be recognized by the Secretary of Defense, CJCS, or NDU President with certificates and—if conditions permit—a personal meeting with the Secretary or Chairman.

This is a joint, interagency writing competition, and essays are expected to meet rigorous academic standards. Thus, senior faculty commitment in each participating college or school is an imperative for a healthy competition. Faculty essay coordinators are requested to actively promote and inform students of the opportunity to compete with their colleagues, and faculty judges are requested to make a significant investment of their time in reading and evaluating essays during both phases of judging.
