The parents of an 18-year-old high school graduate who fell overboard on a sunset cruise in the Bahamas have broken their silence.

Cameron Robbins went on a trip to the Bahamas to celebrate his graduation from the University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He and several friends were aboard the Blackbeard’s Revenge cruise on 24 May when Cameron allegedly jumped off the boat on a dare.

The US Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force spent several days searching for Cameron before suspending their efforts on 27 May. Following his presumed death, a memorial was planned for the teenager on Sunday (4 June).

Speaking from their home ahead of the service, Cameron’s parents William and Shari Robbins, both 54, told The New York Post they were aware of the impact their “funny and kind-hearted” son had made on people following updates of the tragic incident believed to have cut his life short.

“We are just mourning our son right now,” Ms Robbins told the Post . “We appreciate you calling. Maybe we will be able to talk more later.”

A doomed dare and a haunting video: What we know about Cameron Robbins’ cruise ship disappearance

“We appreciate everyone’s support,” Mr Robbins also said.

The University Lab School Director Kevin George told WAFB that Cameron had attended the school for 13 years. The teen also played baseball for the school, which operates as part of Louisiana State University.

“Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling. Extra counselors will be available on campus to speak with students and faculty who are struggling to process this news. Our thoughts are with the Robbins family, and we ask that you keep them in your thoughts as well,” Mr George wrote.

The graduation trip was not organised by the school.

Baton Rouge high school senior Cameron Robbins, 18, is missing after falling off a boat in the Bahamas

According to his obituary, Cameron was not only an accomplished athlete but also loved country music and was a “big star” in karaoke.

“He was a tough player, battling back from multiple injuries, known to pitch through separated shoulders and broken hands. He hoped to continue his baseball career at the college level,” the tribute read. “...Though he left this world far too soon, he lived a life full of good friends and family.”

In a statement provided to The Independent, Jonathan Chia, a representative for Pirates’ Revenge Ltd, the parent company of Blackbeard’s Revenge, said Cameron went overboard at approximately 9.40pm local time in Montagu Bay off Athol Island in the Bahamas.

Video captured in the moments after Cameron jumped into the water showed the 18-year-old swimming around the vessel as passengers on the sunset cruise yelled at him. In the footage, individuals can be heard urging Cameron to grab onto the buoy that they threw into the water for him.

“The crew executed the ‘man overboard’ protocol in line with all approved safety procedures and company policies to ensure the best chance of retrieving an individual who has gone overboard,” Mr Chia said.

After Coast Guard crews searched more than 325 square miles, they concluded their efforts with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force on 27 May. Although searches have ended, the US Coast Guard is asking anyone with new information to contact the District Seven watchstanders at 305-415-6800.

A GoFundMe has been started to benefit Cameron’s family as they deal with the aftermath of the difficult situation.

Meanwhile, online speculation has swirled over whether Cameron was attacked by a shark in the water.

U.S. Coast Guard ends search for Louisiana teen who went overboard in the Bahamas

Cameron Robbins

The U.S. Coast Guard has ended their search for a Louisiana teenager who went overboard during a sunset cruise in the Bahamas on Wednesday night.

The agency announced the conclusion of its search for 18-year-old Cameron Robbins, a recent high school graduate, on Saturday after a two-day effort led by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

The agency did not clarify if a body was found.

Robbins was in the Bahamas staying at the Atlantis Paradise resort in Nassau with other teenagers from Baton Rouge to mark their high school graduations, Louisiana State University confirmed Thursday.

Robbins graduated from the University Lab High School, which operates as part of LSU, on Sunday. The trip was not a school sanctioned event, according to LSU.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force contacted the Coast Guard for assistance on Wednesday at 11:30 p.m. after Robbins fell off the Blackbeard's Revenge sunset cruise ship, according to a news release .

"U.S. Coast Guard District Seven deployed multiple search and rescue assets in response to an agency assistance request from our partners in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force," said Lt. Commander Matthew Spado, Coast Guard liaison officer to the Bahamas. "Our Coast Guard command center and aircrews based in Miami supported RBDF search and rescue efforts since the initial report Wednesday evening, and continued through Friday evening."

Search and rescue crews searched more than 325 square miles looking for Robbins.

The active search was suspended by the Royal Bahamas Defence Force pending developments, according to the Coast Guard.

“We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins’ family and friends," Spado said.

The agency is encouraging anyone with new information to contact the Coast Guard's District Seven.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force said the teen apparently jumped from a pleasure vessel Wednesday night near Athol Island, near the capital of Nassau. According to CBS affiliate WAFB-TV , witnesses said he was acting on a dare.

In addition to the police, the U.S. Coast Guard and the Royal Bahamas Defence Force are looking for Robbins. The Coast Guard said Thursday evening that air crews were assisting in the search.

Robbins was on the trip with other recent Baton Rouge high school graduates, according to WAFB-TV. Robbins graduated from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge on Sunday.

The school's director, Kevin George, said in a statement to the station that the community was praying for the best possible outcome from the search.

"In times like these, we must come together and support each other," George said. "Words fall short of expressing the worry our entire school community is feeling."

Haunting image after teen jumps off ship into ‘shark-infested’ water

A chilling theory has emerged about the fate of a missing teen who jumped off a cruise ship in the Bahamas, sparked by an eerie detail in footage of the incident.

A US high school graduate who disappeared after leaping off a cruise ship into dark waters off the Bahamas last week may have met a grisly fate in the “shark-infested” area, a local official said.

The waters off Athol Island, where Cameron Robbins, 18, was last seen swimming after jumping off the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise on May 24, are “really shark-infested,” Royal Bahamas Defense Force (RBDF) Commodore Raymond King told the Daily Mail on Tuesday.

A chaotic video taken moments after the jump also shows Robbins, from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, ignoring onlookers’ pleas for him to grab a buoy and swimming in the opposite direction, the New York Post reports.

This has promoted social media sleuths to suggest that a silvery reflection near the boat’s hull may have actually been a shark that scared him off.

“Haunting, but you can see the exact moment the shark gets him,” one Twitter user wrote alongside a screenshot of Robbins and the shadow just centimetres apart. “Tragic and scary in every way.”

Another viewer argued that Robbins could be seen abandoning the life ring after he notices the shape nearby.

“He initially goes for the buoy but then turns around when he sees the shark, ultimately disappearing into the water, likely dragged down. Very sad,” they wrote.

The Blackbeard’s Revenge, which is designed to resemble a pirate ship, remained in the area for several hours while the crew attempted to look for Robbins.

The Coast Guard called off its own search two days later, after reportedly scouring more than 840 square kilometres.

Robbins disappeared three days after his graduation from University Laboratory School in Baton Rouge.

He was staying at Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas with a group of fellow seniors from other area high schools.

In the wake of the tragedy, University Laboratory School Director Kevin George described the former baseball star as a “great kid”.

He Was Lost At Sea. People Are Making Content Off His Viral Death

By CT Jones

The family of Cameron Robbins remembers the Baton Rouge, Louisiana high school graduate as an intense, driven, funny, and kind-hearted son. But on the internet, the loss of the 18-year-old — after he jumped off of a cruise ship on an apparent dare — has gone from tragic accident to ripe content mine, the latest example of a tragedy going through the true-crime machine on TikTok .

It’s been 12 days since Robbins was last seen. Units from the U.S. Coast Guard, The United Cajun Navy (a volunteer emergency rescue service), and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force all searched for Robbins but were unsuccessful. On May 27, after searching over 325 square miles of water, the Royal Bahamas Defense Force called off the search and listed Robbins as lost at sea, which declared him legally deceased. “We want to thank the Bahamas government, the U.S. Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us,” the Robbins family said in a statement to WAFB. “In this time of grief, we thank our family, friends and well wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss.”

“None of the experts consulted can definitely say what’s in the video due to the quality and length of the video,” Cajun Navy spokesperson Brian Trascher said. “The Robbins family has requested that we not entertain that theory any longer, so our official position is that we don’t know what happened while Cam was in the water.”

“People are looking for ways to understand why this terrible thing happened,” Douglas says. “A simple explanation is often not very appealing for such a significant event. People assume that a big event must also have a big or more sinister cause, which is why conspiracy theories can be appealing under these circumstances.”

Douglas adds that while conspiracy theories can be meant as a salve, they do have real-world consequences. And while Robbins is no longer here, he is survived by a grieving community — all of whom will have access to the things people are saying about their loved one. “He will be missed desperately by his family and friends,” his obituary read, “who will carry their cherished memories of him to eternity.” For Robbins’ sake, and the sake of his family, the internet should let him rest.

At the time, Robbins and students from other schools were on a graduation trip at the Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau.

At 11:30 p.m. on May 24, Royal Bahamas Defence Force personnel contacted watchstanders from Coast Guard District Seven, informing them that someone had fallen off the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise ship.

According to a witness, crews made multiple unsuccessful attempts to locate Robbins as the boat, resembling a pirate ship, stayed in the area for several hours. On Friday, the U.S. Coast Guard called the search off , according to CBS 9.

A high school graduation holiday took a tragic turn after a teen baseball star jumped overboard on a sunset cruise , before disappearing into the darkness .

Despite a multi-agency search effort, Cameron Robbins has still not been found almost two weeks after his disappearance.

Cameron, 18, was a recent graduate of University Laboratory School in Louisiana, and was on a school trip with classmates and students from other Baton Rouge high schools in the Bahamas. The teen baseball star had graduated just days earlier.

Chilling footage shows the moment Cameron went overboard, having apparently been dared to jump into the water off the sunset cruise ship. Classmates in the video can be heard egging him on, encouraging him to jump into the water - which he did without any form of life jacket.

Witnesses quickly realised things were turning dark, however, and can be heard in the video shouting at him to grab the buoy which had been thrown in to help him. However, Cameron started drifting away before disappearing into the darkness.

The US Coast Guard worked with Bahamian authorities to launch a search and rescue effort on a huge scale, however after just two days it was called off.

We've broken down everything that's happened since Cameron went overboard in a timeline below:

Day one (May 24) - Cameron jumps overboard

18-year-old Cameron from Louisiana was filmed jumping off the Blackbeard's Revenge sunset cruise ship. He, along with other students from Baton Rouge high schools, were on a graduation trip staying at Atlantis Paradise Island in Nassau.

Cameron and other students from University Lab School arrived in the Bahamas just hours before going on the boating excursion.

Witnesses say Cameron was reacting to a dare when he jumped overboard.

He can be seen in video footage jumping from the boat in swimming trunks with no life vest. He appears to splash in the water several feet from the boat before drifting off into the darkness.

Stunned passengers can be heard saying: "Oh my f*****g god. Oh, shut the f**k up. Oh, bye... bye... Oh... s**t!" Another shouts: "Grab the buoy... grab the buoy."

The video has sparked debate and speculation online as to what happened to Cameron, with some people saying they can clearly see a shark in the footage. The Bahamas is known to be home to highly aggressive shark species including tiger and bull sharks.

The US Coast Guard were deployed to help in the search for the missing teen. Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) personnel contacted the US Coast Guard District Seven watchstanders on Wednesday, May 24, at 11.30pm with a report the teen had fallen overboard and entered the water.

Aircrews were launched and search patterns developed by the Coast Guard to help the RBDF's search and rescue efforts. In total, Coast Guard crews searched more than 325 square miles.

Day two (May 25) - Parents fly out

According to the search-and-rescue nonprofit group United Cajun Navy (UCN), Cameron's parents had been in contact with US Representative Garrett Gaes to arrange emergency travel to the Bahamas.

The UCN arranged accommodation for the family as they met with local Bahamian investigators as well as a charter boat to take them to the area where Cameron went overboard.

Brian Trascher, vice president of UCN, expressed his admiration for the family's strength. He said: "It took a lot of strength for them to go out there and stay for a few days.

Day three (May 26) - Search called off

The US Coast Guard called off the search for Cameron on Friday, May 26. In a statement they said they called off their search after being informed by the RBDF that they were suspending their active search efforts.

Lieutenant Commander Matthew Spado, Coast Guard liaison officer to the Bahamas, said in a statement: "US Coast Guard District Seven deployed multiple search and rescue assets in response to an agency assistance request from our partners in the Royal Bahamas Defence Force.

"Our Coast Guard commander center and aircrews based in Miami supported RBDF search and rescue efforts since the initial report Wednesday evening, and continued through Friday evening.

"We were informed by the RBDF this evening (Friday, May 27) that they were suspending the active search efforts pending further developments, and were not requesting further Coast Guard assistance after notifying the Robbins family. We offer our sincerest condolences to Cameron Robbins' family and friends."

Day five (May 28) - Family fly home

On Sunday, May 28, Cameron's family flew back home after the search was called off. After the search was called off his family released a statement, saying: "The Bahamas government has called off the rescue for Cameron and we are returning to Baton Rouge.

"We want to thank the Bahamas government, the US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graces for everything they have done for us.

"In this time of grief we thank our family, friends and well wishers for granting us the privacy we need to properly remember our son and mourn his loss."

Day six (May 29)- Area is 'really shark infested'

In an update on Monday, May 29, RBDF Commodore Raymond King confirmed the waters where Cameron went overboard is "really shark infested".

Commodore King said: "The probability of survival decreases significantly particularly if a person did not have on a life vest and particularly if a person is perceived to be intoxicated.

"I can tell you that the area where an individual reportedly jumped over, it's an area that is really shark infested as well. It is so unfortunate, but I don't want the family to lose hope."

Day 11 (June 3) - 'He left this world far too soon'

Cameron's parents William and Shari Robbins, both 54, say they've been inundated with calls and support since Cameron went missing. They said they "appreciate" the outpouring of support they've received the day before a memorial service for the teen.

An obituary shared on Saturday, June 3, said: "Though he left this world far too soon, he lived a life full of good friends and family. He was funny and kind-hearted, but also intense and driven.

"He doted on his grandparents and he took pride in his work. He will be missed desperately by his family and friends, who will carry their cherished memories of him to eternity."

Cameron was known as a star athlete, with his obituary saying: "He grew up participating in any and every competitive activity that he could find, dominating numerous YMCA and church-league preschool team leagues."

It continued: "He eventually chose baseball as his first love. He hoped to continue his baseball career at the college level. In addition to being a high school athlete, he was undefeated in pop-a-shot." (An arcade basketball game).

The obituary added: "He loved his truck and country music, and was always a big star in the shower and with karaoke machines."

Cameron was also a lover of food. The obituary read: "Finally, he loved all things edible, especially his mother's red beans and his grandmother's spaghetti and meatballs. He made frequent late-night trips to his family's pantry, where he consumed large quantities of fruity pebbles and popcorn."

The family have asked for well wishes to make donations in his name to Christian Homes & Family Services in Abilene, Texas .

Day 12 (June 4) - Teen remembered at private service

A memorial service was held on Sunday, June 4, in memory of the young baseball star.

The service was held at the Broadmoor United Methodist Church in Baton Rouge, and was kept private with loved ones seen filing into the church.

(VIDEO) Louisiana Teen Reportedly Jumps Off Bahamas Cruise Ship On A Dare, Coast Guard Calls Off Search

Matthew McNulty

A shocking new video shows a missing Louisiana teen who allegedly jumped off a boat on a dare while on a high school graduation trip to the Bahamas.

A Lousiana State University (LSU) spokesperson confirmed to WBRZ that 18-year-old Cameron Robbins fell from the Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise at around 11:30 p.m. Wednesday. The U.S. Coast Guard  reportedly called off a search for the boy on Friday.

Missing Louisiana Teen Cameron Robbins Jumped From Boat On Dare, New Video Shows

Robbins had been celebrating with fellow University High Lab School students at the time of the incident.

Authorities with the Royal Bahamas Defence Force (RBDF) and US Coast Guard launched a widespread, two-day search operation. Helicopters and surveillance aircraft ultimately failed to locate the missing teen.

The search was officially suspended on Friday.

Meanwhile, a haunting new video emerged Monday, appearing to show the chaotic scene on the boat immediately following Robbins’ jumping ship.

Video obtained by WBRZ shows Robbins swimming in the ocean without a life jacket on, dressed only in swim trunks. Fellow onlookers yelled in response.

“This kid f*****g jumped off!” one person can be heard shouting. “Oh, my f*****g god. Oh, shut the f**k  up. Oh, bye…bye… Oh … s**t!” another says.

Others yell out: “Grab the buoy.. grab the buoy.”

According to witnesses, the video shows Robbins drifting in the other direction away from the body before disappearing entirely into the vast ocean waters.

U.S. Coast Guard, Royal Bahamas Defence Force End Rescue Mission Friday After Two-Day Search

The cruise ship initially searched for several hours for the missing student without any success. That’s when the Coast Guard and Royal Bahamas Defence Force launched their similarly failed search-and-rescue mission.

The Royal Bahamas Police Force is investigating claims that Robbins jumped from the ship on a dare.

Robbins fell from the boat near Athol Island, northeast of Nassau, the US Coast Guard said.

The teens’ family flew out to the Bahamas on Thursday, according to WAFB .

They said they were returning to Raton Rouge when the search was called off.

“We want to thank the Bahamas government, the US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy, and Congressman Garrett Graves for everything they have done for us,” the statement read , according to USA Today .

Additionally, the family thanked the public for extending them “privacy” during their time to remember their son and “mourn his loss.”

Family, School Staffers Remember Robbins As Star Athlete, “Fierce Competitor”

Meanwhile, friends and former teachers honored Robbins during a prayer circle at the school last week.

Justin Morgan, the teens’ high school baseball coach, told CNN Robbins was a “fierce competitor.” The teen had played third baseman and pitcher, Morgan added.

Robbins had attended the school for 13 years, according to Kevin George, the director of LSU’s College of Human Sciences and Education.

“He’s an athlete, great kid, great smile, great head of hair. Just one of the kids you’re so proud of when they cross the stage,” George told CNN.

Friends tried to intervene and stop missing teenager Cameron Robbins from jumping off a pirate-themed party boat and into the “shark-infested” ocean shortly before he disappeared in the Bahamas May 24.

A parent whose son was aboard the Blackbeard’s Revenge vessel told Fox News several students tried to stop Robbins before he plunged into the dark waters near the uninhabited Athol Island, just northwest of Bahamas capital Nassau.

“This was a booze cruise, and they were on their way back when this happened,” the parent told the network. “My son texted me when it happened, saying, ‘Cameron jumped off. They can’t find him.’ They were out there until 2, 3 in the morning.

“It was a terrible weather that night. The kids were cold, wet and traumatized. The girls were in bikinis and bathing suits. The guys were giving them their shirts. It was a bad time to bring drunk 18-year-olds out into waters near this island where there’s nothing.”

Haunting video footage shows Robbins swimming away from a rescue buoy as onlookers shout for him to grab the device.

Online viewers have speculated they could see flashes of shark-like sea creature in the video and Robbins was trying to get away from it.

A second later, he has disappeared under the surface.

The US Coast Guard, the United Cajun Navy and the Royal Bahamas Defense Force all searched the murky waters for the next two days.

They covered over 325 square miles with no success before calling off the search on May 26 as they had found no trace of Robbins.

In the video of the last moments Cameron is seen, someone can be heard yelling , “This kid f–king jumped off! Oh my f–king God! Oh, shut the f–k up! Oh, bye, bye!”

Brian Trascher, vice president of the nonprofit search-and-rescue group United Cajun Navy, told WBRZ: “Had they found a piece of clothing or any kind of clue, that would cause them to extend that 48-hour period, but if they don’t get any kind of indication, then that’s usually when they call it off,” Trascher siad.

Robbins and his friends joined graduates from other high schools on Blackbeard’s Revenge for a pleasure cruise that was supposed to travel around the uninhabited Athol Island.

A spokesperson for Blackbeard’s Revenge told The Post the boat’s crew “executed the ‘man overboard’ protocol in line with all approved safety procedures and company policies to ensure the best chance of retrieving an individual who has gone overboard.”

“Our deepest condolences to the Robbins family as they go through this difficult time,” the spokesperson added.

“Since the incident, the company has reviewed all safety measures and protocols and are confident that the company’s practices were and continue to be in line with the highest industry standards to keep its passengers safe.”

A memorial service for the popular teen will beheld on Sunday in Baton Rouge.

Shark Seen in Extended Video of HS Graduate Who Disappeared Jumping From Bahamas Ship

jump off cruise ship bahamas

Eighteen-year-old high school graduate Cameron Robbins was on a celebratory trip in the Bahamas when he jumped off a ship on May 24, allegedly on a dare. The US Coast Guard called off the search after two days, but Robbins has still not been found. Blurry and dark videos have been circulating on social media, leading many to believe there may have been a shark in the water with the high school graduate from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

The Blackbeard’s Revenge sunset cruise was northeast of Nassau, near Athol Island, an area that is home to a lot of marine life, including sharks, experts told Fox News. Though these types of incidents occur for different reasons, an estimated one to two people go overboard on a cruise ship each month, a report from Cruise Lines International showed, reported The Points Guy .

Investigators are weighing in on reasons why Robbins has not been recovered yet. Some suspect he encountered a shark.

Chilling videos showing Robbins jumping off the ship have been circulating on various social media platforms. Some initially suspected a current could have pulled Robbins away from the ship and the life preserver that was thrown in the water. But others have pointed out a blurry shape in the dark waters that appears to look eerily like a shark, as seen in this video posted by Florida Boy on YouTube.

Royal Defense Force Commodore Raymond King said, “It’s an area that is really shark-infested,” reported Fox News . On the other hand, spokesperson for the United Cajun Navy, Brian Trascher, says nothing is certain at this point.

Trascher told Fox News: "We definitively don't have anything conclusive enough to determine if Cameron Robbins came in contact with any marine life. We are consulting with professors at the LSU Department of Oceanography and Coastal Sciences for expertise.”

Without a life vest, chances of survival are significantly lower.

King noted in an update that without a life vest, the odds of survival were slim. "The probability of survival decreases significantly, particularly if a person did not have on a life vest and particularly if a person is perceived to be intoxicated,” King said. "It is so unfortunate, but I don't want the family to lose hope.”

Trascher pointed out that the “inclement” weather conditions the night of the incident are another factor that has made it challenging to locate Robbins.

Cruise lines recommend following a few rules to stay safe.

Even though much of the news coverage about cruise ships tends to be negative, there are only rare tragic occurrences. It is reportedly one of the safest forms of travel, per Travel Pulse . But there are important rules to follow to increase your safety and limit accidents while aboard a ship.

The majority of cruise ship related injuries are due to falls, so passengers should use and respect handrails while aboard, advises cruiseline.com . Also, be careful of how much alcohol you consume as that can impair judgment as well as mental and physical abilities.

The teen’s local community is hoping for the best.

The school Robbins graduated from and attended for over 10 years has been holding prayer vigils since he disappeared and has offered counseling to the students at Baton Rouge’s University Laboratory School, per Fox News. A Facebook user who appeared to be a friend of the Robbins' family, Drew Sutton, also posted an update on Facebook asking for prayers for Robbins to be recovered.

Sutton wrote, “Please keep Cameron Robbins and his family in prayer. He's been missing since late Wednesday night in the Bahamas on his senior trip. May god's mercy and peace surround us in this time as we keep hoping Cameron will be found, soon!”

20-year-old man missing after jumping off a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, report says

  • A 20-year-old man on holiday with his family went overboard from a Royal Caribbean cruise.
  • The man, who's been missing since early Thursday morning, may have jumped, a report said.
  • The US Coast Guard has launched a search operation.

Insider Today

A 20-year-old man who was vacationing with his family on a cruise may have jumped overboard, The New York Post reported.

Royal Caribbean confirmed that a passenger, whose identity has not been revealed, went overboard near The Bahamas at about 4 a.m. on Thursday and has been missing since then.

The US Coast Guard launched a search for the passenger on Thursday.

A Royal Caribbean spokesperson told Business Insider that the cruise line's "Care Team is providing support and assistance to the guest's family during this difficult time."

Bryan Sims, a fellow cruise passenger, told The New York Post that he'd hung out with the passenger in the hot tub until 3:30 a.m. Sims said the man appeared to be "pretty drunk."

Sims told the Post that after leaving the hot tub, they encountered the passenger's father while approaching the elevators.

"His dad was fussing at him for being drunk," Sims said.

Deborah Morrison, another passenger on board the cruise, told the Post that "there was a lot of yelling and that the crew was alerted immediately."

"The ship's crew immediately launched a search and rescue effort alongside the US Coast Guard, who has taken over the search," the Royal Caribbean spokesperson said.

The cruise ship has 18 decks and can accommodate up to 3,634 passengers. It's served by a crew of about 1,300.

The chances of falling overboard on a cruise ship are extremely low .

In 2023, about 31 million passengers traveled on a cruise, and at least 10 people went overboard, with two of them surviving, Business Insider reported .

"Even one incident is one too many," a spokesperson for Cruise Lines International Association told Business Insider, adding that "the vast majority of cases are either reckless behavior or some form of intentional act. People don't just inadvertently fall over the side of a ship."

Last month, a 23-year-old man who felt seasick fell overboard from the MSC Euribia cruise ship while crossing the North Sea in Europe and was presumed dead.

In December, an MSC Cruises passenger jumped from one of its ships while sailing from Europe to South America.

According to a CLIA report, only 28.2% of passengers who fell overboard between 2009 and 2019 were successfully rescued.
