Koh Rok Day Trip from Koh Lanta (All Highlights)

Koh Rok Island

If you have ever been to some islands in this country then you probably know this scenario:

You just took a ferry for an hour or two, checked in at your hotel and the first thing you do is to take a look at the beach. Then it often turns out that the nicest beach on that particular island is just fine but nothing like you have seen in the tour guides, websites or google image search.

The reason for that is that you need to do another day trip on the speedboat to some of the smaller, remote islands to see the real gorgeous beaches. There are many examples for this: On Koh Samui you would go on a trip to Ang Thong Marine Park or on Koh Chang you would take the boat to Koh Mak or Koh Kood .

So yes, that’s right: You visit one island only to find that the best beaches in the region aren’t actually where you are staying.  It’s the same on Koh Lanta. The beaches are alright but it’s nothing compared to Koh Rok , which are two tiny islands about one hour by speed boat from Koh Lanta away. So a stay in Koh Lanta is all about exploring the different viewpoints by motorbike, chill out at the many scenic beach bars and maybe do some kayak trip or visit the old town. I have covered that already in the Lanta Daytime Guide .

But the most unforgettable experience will definitely be a full day boat trip to Koh Rok. There are actually three different tours being offered like you can see in my photo of that tour brochure below:

Koh Rok Trip Prices

Koh Rok is by far the most beautiful and least visited island of all three tours. The 4 islands tour might be fun, too, but if your priority is on the beach itself and snorkeling then you should go for Koh Rok. And well, Koh Phi Phi is another must visit, but I’d recommend you to do this trip from Ao Nang instead – the tour price is cheaper and the distance is also shorter.

When I visited Koh Lanta last month, I booked my Koh Rok trip right at my hotel ( Keereelay Resort , really nice place up on the hill with awesome value for money) and it cost me 1,300 Baht. It was during the low season (October) so they gave me the discount from the standard price which apparently is 1,700 Baht (at least that’s what it says in the tour brochure above).

The tour price includes pick up from your hotel, the speed boat cruise, snorkeling gear, buffet lunch on the island, water, fruit and transfer back to your hotel. That’s a fantastic deal if you ask me and even if it cost 2,000 Baht I think it’s still worth it.

They picked me up after breakfast at 7:30am and went to two more hotels where more guys jumped on the Toyota pickup. After about 15 minutes drive we reached the speed boat pier (see the location on the map at the end of the guide). They asked us to wait in the seating area until it was time to leave:

Koh Rok Trip

At 9:30am we were introduced to our Thai tour guides (good English skills) and entered the speed boat that had space for 30 people. We left Koh Lanta and cruised (or rather raced?) directly towards Koh Rok about 50km down south.

Koh Rok Trip 2

After almost exactly 1 hour we reached the small sister islands named Koh Rok Yai and Koh Rok Noi ( yai means big and noi means small). The boat stopped just about 50 meters off the shore and our guide gave us the snorkeling gear and announced that we had 1 hour to spend there.

There was some nice fish, but to be honest the second snorkeling spot in the afternoon was much nicer – see below.

So at about 11:30am we cruised over to the main beach of Koh Rok Yai:

Koh Rok Trip 3

We all left the boat and walked towards the visitor area just behind the beach where they had already prepared our buffet lunch under the trees.

Koh Rok Trip 4

After lunch we had a “relaxation time” of 1 hour.

I walked away from the crowd and just 100m down the beach there were surprisingly few people:

Koh Rok Trip 5

And I continued walking down the beach until I found my little paradise.

Koh Rok Trip 6

At that point I couldn’t resist any longer so I stopped taking photos, took off my shirt and jumped into the crystal clear water. Fantastic experience and I was surprised how few people walked away from the main visitor center to swim in this much more relaxed part of the beach. And believe it or not, I even saw a sea star in that water (I almost stepped on it!).

Of course I want to give you the complete impression of the beach on Koh Rok and how many people there were near the visitor center, so here you go:

Koh Rok Trip 7

Like you can see, it’s not that bad. There are far less speed boats arriving at the beach on Koh Rok compared to the likes of Maya Bay on Koh Phi Phi or in the Similan Islands . However, I was told that they have just recently started to promote Koh Rok to keep up with the increasing number of tourists, so make sure you visit there before its natural beauty gets somewhat spoilt.

And in case you wonder – yes, there are quite a lot of Chinese travelers joining the tours. But I have found them quite nice, even got to talk with a couple of them and I really couldn’t complain about what I got to see:

Koh Rok Trip 9

At about 2pm it was time to get on the boat again. Don’t think that’s a lot of boats until you’ve been to Maya Bay.

Koh Rok Trip 10

We cruised over to the other island, Koh Rok Noi, for our second snorkeling spot. Here is a picture of another speed boat I took along the way:

Koh Rok Trip 11

Most people took out their snorkeling gear again, but there were also a few guys who were too tired or just too lazy to jump into the water again. I did go for the second snorkeling session though, and it turned out to be a great decision.

There were incredibly many colorful fish, lots of impressive reefs and I even discovered three “Nemo” fishes! Make sure to check out my short video below, I’ve got it all recorded.

Koh Rok Trip 12

After 40 minutes we left Koh Rok and cruised back to Koh Lanta, where we reached the jetty at around 4pm. The pickups already awaited our arrival and at 4:30pm everyone was back in their hotel.

Koh Rok Trip 13

One of the best day trips I have ever done in Thailand. I actually wished I had planned my schedule more flexible and had more time, because then I would have stayed one night on Koh Rok. Yes, they have tents available for 500 Baht a night.

Must be an amazing experience to chill on that gorgeous beach in the late afternoon until sunset, drink cool Singha beers and get a little nostalgic on what a wonderful country you’re living in. Well, surely I’m doing that every once in a while, but next time I’m going there I will make sure to spend a night there.

But even if you don’t – it’s well worth it and not (yet) as overrun as many other islands in Thailand.

I have more questions....

If you are like most people, you might have some additional questions – we understand.  Information on how to book and prices are here . Below are some of the more common questions we have been asked. If you have further queries, please get in touch and we’ll do our best to help.

What should I bring with me?

Complimentary bottled water and lunch are provided, you are welcome to bring additional snacks or drinks.

Other items you many want to consider:

  • Beach towel
  • Waterproof drybag

Biting insects such as mosquitoes aren’t typically a problem during the day, but if you have young children you might want to bring some mosquito repellent, just in case!

Ko Rok, Ko Bubu, Koh Kradan and Ko Ngai/Hai all have small resorts on them, and can provide additional food, snacks and drinks, so bringing a little spending money with you might be useful.

Are life jackets provided?

Yes, life jackets are available onboard. Your safety is our priority. Also we understand that some people are more comfortable in the water with a lifejacket, and we’d recommend that young children always wear a life jacket. Although we have small sized life jackets, for very young children we’d recommend that you bring your own floatation/buoyancy aids with you that you are comfortable correctly fit.

Do I need to bring my own snorkeling equipment?

Masks and snorkels are available onboard. There’s also a limited selection of fins (or ‘flippers’ for you landlubbers!)

I have a food allergy / special lunch requirement

Please let us know in advance of any food allergies or if you have a special dietary requirement.

Is this activity suitable for children?

Absolutely! Children are more than welcome on our longtail. However as always, please be careful around open water and don’t leave children unattended. Although we have small sized life jackets, for young children we’d recommend that you bring your own floatation/buoyancy aids with you that correctly fit.

Is a guide provided?

Our Thai boat captain knows everything you might want to ask about our tours, and speaks some English.

How long will our private longtail trip be?

Our driver will meet you at your resort or hotel at approximately 8:30am and drive you to your departure point. All longtail day trips leave at approximately 9:00am and return around 4:30pm, not including transfer times returning back to your resort.

Can we do a half-day trip?

It is not possible to do half day trips due to the distances and travel times involved. For example, a private longtail trip to Koh Rok takes up to 2 hours travel time from Koh Lanta. On a half day trip leaving at 12:00, we would arrive at 2:00pm then have to immediately return, arriving back to Lanta at 4:00pm. You would have no time to spend exploring Koh Rok.

The 4 Islands longtail trip is approximately 1 hour travel time, Koh Kradan travel time is approximately 1 hour, 15 minutes. We want to make sure our guests have the best day trip from Koh Lanta, and this just isn’t possible with only a half day tour.

Do you offer fishing trips?

We provide private longtail tours to nearby national park islands, we do not provide fishing trips. We’d rather you snorkeled with the fish and appreciated the natural beauty of the tropical paradise we call home, rather than pull fish out the water! Also it’s illegal to fish on the coral reefs in the national parks – we cannot take you on fishing trips to tour destinations listed on our website.

Is alcohol permitted?

There’s no problem bringing alcohol on board and we welcome group parties, but please drink responsibly and be respectful of the boat crew and any other visitors to the islands and beaches.

Islander

Koh Rok islands

Koh Rok is a small archipelago in southern Thailand in the Andaman Sea. It is located close to Koh Lanta island and is a top-rated snorkeling destination for a day trip from there. Being part of the Mu Koh Lanta Marine National Park, the Koh Rok islands promise a thriving underwater ecosystem. Vibrant marine life is an unbeatable highlight of the Koh Rok tour from Koh Lanta island, where waters are not as pristine.

Koh Rok consists of two islands, always included in the Koh Rok tour. The first island is Koh Rok Yai, with a long stretch of white powder beach, considered among the top ten most beautiful beaches in Thailand. The second island, Koh Rok Noi, features an impressive snorkeling area, a pole mark that points to the end of Thailand, and a sublime Koh Rok Waterfall for diving. Both islands can be visited from Koh Lanta from November till May. There are no accommodation options in Koh Rok islands.

Koh Rok Yai

Koh Rok Yai welcomes visitors with a long stretch of white powder beach. It is among the top ten most beautiful beaches in Thailand, which might be the only reason why Koh Rok tours are so popular. Walk from Man Sai Beach into a rainforest of massive banyan trees before reaching Ao Tha Lu Beach, overlooking a bay surrounded by black limestone cliffs. Koh Rok Yai is located south of Koh Lanta and boasts of being one of the twin islands of the Koh Rok archipelago to be kept in its most natural state.

You will discover an iconic stretch of white powder-soft sands at Ao Man Sai and Ao Tha Lu beach, serving home to hermit crabs. An interesting thing about the Koh Rok Yai beaches is the implementation of the Land Hermit Crab’s Home, which encourages visitors to play a part in helping to protect the creatures. All they need to do is leave empty cans, which will then become the hermit crabs’ homes. Behind Ao Man Sai beach, you can also encounter the monitor lizards in the jungle, or laze around in the crystal clear shallow waters. A stop at this island during your Koh Rok tour will leave an everlasting impression.

Koh Rok Noi

Koh Rok Noi is the sister island of Koh Rok Yai and often included in the list of those going on a Koh Rok snorkeling tour. Located very near to Koh Rok Yai, the crescent-shaped bay of Koh Rok Noi is the main attraction of the island. Snorkeling in the water surrounding Koh Rok Noi makes for a beautiful experience with the sightings of various species of fish such as the barracudas and tunas. Among its vibrant coral gardens, there are also giant clams that attract snorkelers of all ages.

On land, Koh Rok Noi features a pole mark that points to the end of Thailand. There is also a sublime Koh Rok Waterfall hidden in its interior. The Koh Rok Waterfall is unique in that it is visible only during the rainy season. Ao Sarn Chao Beach on Koh Rok Noi gained fame due to fishermen who came here to build shrines. The shrines protect their ships from harm when they go out to the sea for fishing. However, most visitors would probably choose to travel to Koh Rok Noi for snorkeling or diving only. Luckily, snorkeling conditions in Koh Rok Noi bay are favorable most of the year.

Koh Rok tour from Koh Lanta

Koh Rok snorkeling tour is a top-rated day trip from Koh Lanta. This small and pristine archipelago is only 40 minutes by boat from Koh Lanta, attracting snorkelers and divers alike. The Koh Rok tour usually covers the best of two main islands – Koh Rok Yai and Koh Rok Noi. Although further exploration of the remote Koh Haa archipelago is also possible when visiting Koh Rok from Koh Lanta.

There are two ways to get to Koh Rok islands from Koh Lanta. The most popular choice is to join a day trip by speedboat alongside other vacationers. Such day trips proceed on a fixed itinerary and include a bit of snorkeling, sightseeing, and beachcombing. However, if you wish to experience the most of this remarkable destination at your own pace, we recommend taking a private boat tour with Islander.

Koh Rok and Koh Haa island day tour

The five Koh Haa islands, often included in the Koh Rok tour, are known as mini paradise, which offers a rugged and untouched atmosphere. Few islands as pristine as Koh Haa remain in Thailand, where you can enjoy the secluded beaches, unspoiled coral reefs, and iconic diving. Both archipelagos of Koh Rok and Koh Haa are part of the Mu Koh Lanta Marine National Park, which is best to visit between November and May.

Koh Rok Thailand (Camping): Our Boat Tour Left us Behind!

Koh Rok is a picturesque island in Thailand. A protected Marine Park, nicknamed ‘The Queen of the Andaman’. Koh Rok is one of the most beautiful islands in Thailand. White sand beaches, clear blue waters and epic snorkelling points all make it a dream destination.

You might have heard of Koh Rok as a place to visit on a day trip. But we were looking for a different kind of experience and decided to spend the night on Koh Rok island! Two nights, in fact. We slept in tents, under the stars, pitched on the beach. A beach which is packed full of tourists throughout the day, yet it became our own private beach in the evenings. Our own private island. Camping at Koh Rok is an insane experience. It’s difficult to organise, and few people manage to achieve it. But the reward is worth it. A real hidden gem. Really, where else can you rent a private island for the cost of a hostel bed?

So here is everything you need to know about Koh Rok. The story of how we managed to camp out overnight on the Island, and how you too can have the same experience. 🔽

Map of koh rok ko rok thailand island showing locations of beachsnorkel waterfall campsite viepoint nature trails

How Much Does Koh Rok Cost

In total it cost us 5,500 Baht for two people to camp on Koh Rok, for two nights. Not the cheapest experience by Thai standards… but easily affordable and worth every single baht. Our biggest expense was travel to and from the island. The second largest expense was buying food and drinks in the restaurant onsite. Here is the full breakdown of our costs.

The National Park Fee on Koh Rok is 40 Baht for Thai and 400 Baht for foreigners(Racist). However… we were never charged the park admission. I guess they forgot? It’s often included in a tour price, in these situations the National Park usually gives the tour company a commission between 100 – 200 Baht for each person.

TIP: There is a cell tower near Koh Rok where you can pick up a mobile signal. However, the service only works with the AIS network.

Koh Rok – The Plan

The plan was simple, we knew there was a National Park Ranger Station on Ko Rok. And we knew that tents could be rented from the National Park. But this is one activity we had to meticulously plan out by ourselves.

signpost on Koh Rok Island 1

Where Is Koh Rok (And How to Get There)

Koh Rok is located in the Andaman sea. It’s actually a set of two islands, neither of which is inhabited. Both as beautiful as another, and both are protected National Marine Parks. The Koh Rok Islands are really secluded. The open ocean is all you can see from the beach with the nearest mainland points being located either 30 Kilometres north at Koh Lanta or Pak Meng which is 40 Kilometers to the east.

There were no boats to Koh Rok. Getting there was going to be more difficult than we had first anticipated.

Koh Rok Island Tour

Our options for getting to Koh Rok were limited. Our first thought was chartering a Private Longtail Boat, but after being quoted about 6,000 Baht we soon realised it was out of our price range. We were also aware that the Longtail Boat was not the safest way of getting to Koh Rok.

But because Koh Rok is such a popular island to visit on a day tour we decided to look into the possibility of booking a day tour which included a stop at the island and then… well kind of just running away from our tour group, once we reached Koh Rok. Which is exactly what we did.

Booking tickets for the cheapest tour we could find which cost us 1,000 Baht each(excluding the park entrance fee). The tour would visit ‘Koh Ha Islands’ and then Koh Rok Islands. Perfect.

Koh Rok Floating Pier

The tour was absolute ****. The guide was miserable as were most of the others in the tour group. But we didn’t care. We were only interested in getting to Koh Rok. We did inform our ‘tour guide’ about our plan to stay at Koh Rok in the morning. He seemed confused about the situation and muttered something about paying 400 Baht for the National Park entrance.

Arriving At Koh Rok

Our tour stopped first at Koh Ha ‘Five Isalnds’ for snorkelling and we stayed on the boat while the 30+ tourists that were packed onto our boat leapt into the ocean one by one.

Honestly, we were not prepared to be on a snorkelling tour at all. Neither of us were wearing bathing suits and we were both carrying our full 30-litre backpacks, loaded with camera gear, laptops and electronics. There was no place offered to store our luggage on the boat, so we spent the next hour defending our backpacks from tourists dripping on them, throwing their wet towels over the top of them and pretty much every other way possible they could find, to drench our backpacks.

Although our luggage was damp, luckily, nothing was damaged. But we were relieved to have arrived at Koh Rok Island.

Koh Rok Beach

The first impressions of the Island were stunning. Like a beach you could only dream exists. It was perfect and it was still a bit surreal to think that we’d be spending the night here, alone. Like real castaways.

Koh Rok Beach at Sunrise

For the small size of the Koh Rok Islands, there were a ridiculous amount of tourists. But it’s the same everywhere you go in Thailand. We were expecting that, and it’s one reason why we wanted to stay the night and see a different perspective from the island.

Lunch was included with our tour and served at Koh Rok. There were about ten tour companies all with a buffet lunch offering. Our tour had the worst lunch out of them all. Oh well. Not knowing where our next meal would come we took full advantage, eating as much as was humanly possible, before grabbing as many bottles of water as we could carry and then quickly scurrying away. We could not stop smiling!

Night One on Koh Rok

There are two accommodation options on Koh Rok Island. The first is a bungalow with hot running water and all the comforts of home. The second option, which is what we decided was to camp out on the beach.

Accommodation on Koh Rok can only be booked with the National Parks directly. And they will need to grant you permission to stay overnight. It’s possible to book on their(the DNP) website if you can navigate your way around the online mess. Or you can give them a call using +6675656576. Koh Rok islands are included as part of the Mu Koh Lanta National Park.

Our stay was approved via the DNP website, but when we arrived at Koh Rok the National Park Staff seemed a little confused. I guess overnight visitors are not common at Koh Rok. But it didn’t take them long to verify everything and soon we were set up with our tent pitched right next to the beach.

National Park Life Guards Tower at Koh Rok Island

It costs 500 Baht per night to rent a tent at Koh Rok or bungalows cost 1,200 Baht. You can bring your own tent and pay for the pitch which is 150 a night. When renting a tent sleeping bags, roll mats and pillows are provided. They can also be rented separately.

A park ranger who we had befriended told us that as soon as it gets to 3.00 PM we’d be the only ones left at the island. With our camp all set up, we strung out hammocks next to the sea and waited.

We waved goodbye to our tour boat from a distance and watched the rest of the speedboats leave Koh Rok one by one. Then sure enough at exactly 3.00 PM, we watched the last speedboat pull away from the floating pier. That was it, there was no backing out now and there was no way to leave the island.

Just like that, all the tourists were gone. I didn’t have to endure the Instagram posers any longer. Koh Rok, for the next 12 hours or so had become our own private island.

Waking Up on Koh Rok

This is the moment I was anticipating most.

Waking up and unzipping the tent.

It was surreal and for a brief moment in that morning daze. I had forgotten where we were. But as the light flooded into our tent, I was soon reminded. The smell of the ocean was so strong and the sound of the waves coming from just a few meters away was so peaceful.

Tent On Koh Rok Beach

We woke up at 6.00 AM with the sunrise to give ourselves the longest amount of time possible, to enjoy Koh Rok possible before the tour boats returned.

sunrise on koh rok

Did I mention there is a restaurant at Koh Rok too? They open three times a day for Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner, like clockwork. Yet, we were the only customers they had. Although I am pleased there was a restaurant, we had stuffed our backpacks full of instant noodles and cereal bars as a backup. But getting served scrambled eggs on toast was a little luxury I wasn’t expecting. We ate our breakfast and fell back into the hammocks for a morning snooze.

Sure enough right around 11.00 AM the tour boats returned. We decided to make ourselves scarce for a few hours and set off to hike the nature trail to the viewpoint.

activities koh rok

Day and Night Two on Koh Rok

We spent the morning hiking the nature trail, a short two-kilometre path around the outskirts of Koh Rok Yai. The hike passes over the viewpoint so we spend some time hanging out there too before returning to the beach.

We snorkelled in the ocean for an hour or so and when the tour boats arrived so did their buffet lunches. It was feeding time at the zoo.

We decided to take advantage of the situation, striking up a conversation with one of the tour guides we attempted to offer him a few hundred baht in exchange for a plate from the buffet. After explaining our situation, that we were in fact camping on Koh Rok he refused to take any payment and loaded up full plates of Thai Curries, Chicken Wings and fresh pineapples. We ate like kings that day. Then to let our lunch go down, you guessed it… we laid back in our hammocks under the sun. 😄

Man standing on Koh Rok Pier

And again as 3 PM came around, the last boat left the island. The hoards of tourists were gone again and the island was quiet once more. There is electricity on Koh Rok (I’m not sure if there is a generator or an undersea cable), but despite the fact, there is electricity. During the night all the lights are out.

Koh Rok island is in the middle of nowhere, essentially. It’s pitch black. Darkness like you could never imagine. With the only light shining from the stars above. It’s so beautiful, it’s scary.

Staying the night on the island really gave us a unique perspective of things. Seeing the demeanour change from the National Park Staff is difficult to explain. Authority figures during the day, became giggling children in the evening as they push each other on the beach swings.

Alcohol is prohibited in All of Thaialnds National Parks. But I guess Koh Rok is an exemption. Beers are openly sold in the restaurant, not cheap at 100 Baht a can but a price worth paying.

Anyone that’s spent time in southern Thailand during the Monsoon season will know the weather can change in an instant. And that is exactly what happened to us. The skies open up and it began lashing it down with rain. The ocean which had been so calm was suddenly filled with range. The National Park Rangers were so kind about it. Even going as far as to offer us a bungalow for the night.

“No need we said”, the tent is fine. With the sound of a tropical storm outside, I slept like a baby.

Leaving Koh Rok – Back to Koh Lanta

So what was the plan to return to Koh Lanta? To be honest, there wasn’t one. We know tour boats were coming to and from the Island and we hoped we would be able to board one.

We had hoped to find a boat heading further south to another island but sadly it wasn’t to be. We did end up getting a ride back to Koh Lanta though.

Once the speedboats started to arrive with the usual tour groups I headed down to the bottom of Koh Rok’s floating pier. Where the boats stopped, and began to ask around the speedboat captains where they were heading, after Koh Rok. Two boats were going to Koh Jum and another two to Koh Phi Phi. Before I found a boat captain who had Koh Lanta as the return destination. Bingo.

Explaining that we’d been on Koh Rok for two nights and that we needed a ride back to Koh Lanta genuine Thai Hospitality kicked in. We’d hit the jackpot and met the nicest tour guide in Thailand. ‘T’ was his name.

The first question T asked was “had we eaten yet”. It didn’t take long before we were sitting with the boat crew and tucking into lunch. We ended up invading a snorkel tour group by paying 600 Baht a person for the ride back to Koh Lanta. I’m not sure what the rest of the tour group was thinking with the crew picking up a couple of hitchhikers out on Koh Rok but everyone was friendly enough. We even got to stop at one last snorkel site on the ride back.

coral reef at koh rok island

Even though we joined the tour midway we still got treated as customers, we were offered fruits, snacks, and drinks. Compared to the tour that we arrived with- the hospitality was a world apart.

So if you’re planning to visit Koh Rok as a day tour only, the company we rode back with was called Tin Adventure Tours’. I cannot recommend them enough. They even to stored our backpacks in the boat dry locker too! We were so relieved that we didn’t have to worry about our luggage this time.

Back To Koh Lanta

After two nights on Koh Rok Island, we arrived back in Koh Lanta. It all seemed like a distant memory. Had that actually just happened? Did we really camp out on the island? The memory of unzipping the tent in the morning and seeing the ocean and desserted beach will be baked in my mind for a lifetime.

Capming Site on Koh Rok Thai Island

And me? “I still believe in paradise. But now at least I know it’s not someplace you can look for. Because it’s not where you go. It’s how you feel for a moment in your life when you’re a part of something. And if you find that moment, it lasts forever.”

i will also try to reach Ko Rok this November 2023 and have a tent with me this holiday

do i need to arrange my stay before online with the dnp ?

the website of dnp is not possible to open for me her in austria … failure all the time

or can i just show up with a daytour and go to the ranger and ask them if i can stay there 2 nights

or should i try to make a phone call one day before from a hostel with the help of the staff there ?

greetings Martin

Sorry Martin,

I didn’t see your comment until after November! but I hope you managed to figure things out. I agree the DNP website is not great! I would have suggested using tent supplied by the National Parks, otherwise you’d need to carry a lot of gear on a joint tour, or hire a private boat to get out there. And yes, getting help from a Thai friend/acquaintance to call on your behalf, a day or so before would planning easier.

' src=

Hi Bob, When did you go to Ko Rock? I went there the 2018 and I wanted to come back on February 2020 before pandemic lockdown. At that time they have close the camping. I’m trying to find information if it is open now or for next winter?

Hey Anna 👋 The trip I’ve written about – we visited in 2023, but have spend a lot of time in the area over the years. The camping is open all year round! And I definitely recommend doing it. The tricky part is actually finding a boat to get to Koh Rok! It’s best arranged in person from Koh Lanta Island. The tents can only be reserved through the National Park so you’d have to call them to reserve one (+66 75 656 576) it’s hit and miss if they can speak English – if it’s an option for you it would be easier to have a Thai Speaker call on your behalf. Enjoy Koh Rok!

Backpackbob.

Hi, Im Robb. And I live on holiday. Welcome to 'Backpack Bob. No, I didn’t quit my job and sell everything to travel the world. I initially funded all my travels by working abroad. But that doesn’t mean I’m here to save you money, or to help you travel smarter. I just enjoy writing about the places I’ve been. It’s more of a memoir for myself, to look back on in the future. But if you find my guides useful, then you are very welcome here. My journey started in 2016 when I decided not to return from a one-month vacation. And when the lockdowns happened in 2020. I found myself stranded in Thailand , (where I now live for six months of the year). I used that time to finally start this blog and share my stories. People have often told me I should write a book about my adventures, so this is the next best thing. For the love, not the money.

Koh Rok Snorkelling Tour with Tin Adventure: Full Guide, Koh Lanta

The Koh Rok Snorkelling Tour with Tin Adventure was by far one of the best experiences we had in Koh Lanta.

When you imagine a tropical paradise, you imagine an island like Koh Rok , don’t believe me? Google it and admire those beautiful blues of the ocean and stunning white sand beaches.

Koh Rok Nai and its sister island Koh Rok Nok together form a national park off the coast of Koh Lanta, Koh Rok, they are very well known for their snorkelling, wild jungles and abundance of fish.

Keep reading to discover all you need to know about this Koh Rok snorkelling tour, how to book and what we thought of the day.

How to book

Head to Get Your Guide , here you can book the Koh Lanta: Adventure Sea Tour to Koh Rok and Koh Haa and receive instant confirmation of your booking.

Personally we like to book this way as we know exactly what to expect and this was a bucket list adventure for us on Koh Lanta so wanted to ensure we didn’t miss out.

We took this tour in February 2023 and paid £43.97 each when booking via Get Your Guide – this works out at around 1800 Thai Baht.

What is included in this price

  • Hotel pick up and drop off
  • Unlimited soft drinks all day (these were water, orange juice and coke)
  • Thai buffet lunch and fruit
  • Snorkelling equipment (mask, snorkel and fins)
  • Life jacket
  • English speaking guide
  • Basic accident insurance

‼️ Please note that you have to pay an additional 400 baht (£10) per adult and 200 baht (£5) per child to enter the national park. This is a standard fee that is charged in national parks throughout Thailand .

What to take on your Koh Rok Snorkelling Tour

During the tour you are out for most of the day and throughout, you are in and out of the water a lot so you don’t need to take much.

  • I recommend wearing your swimsuit there under your clothes, otherwise you will have to change in front of other guests on the boat and there isn’t much privacy!
  • Take a cover up or easy clothes to slip on and off for lunch and pick up/drop off.
  • Your own snorkelling gear if you have any.
  • An underwater camera as there are some amazing fish and creatures to see!
  • A waterproof bag to keep all of your belongings in – this goes under your seat.
  • A dry towel if you have one.

What to expect on the day

Be ready to be collected anytime between 8/8.30am depending on where your hotel is, we were collected at 8.20am along with some other guests also staying at Chomview Resort . From our resort it was only a couple of minutes to the speed boats that were waiting for us on the beach next to Phra Ae Public Health Park.

On arrival we were introduced to our tour guide and given our boat number then asked to wait for some other guests to arrive, this didn’t take long maybe 5/10 minutes max.

Once everyone was there we headed to our boats, there were about 20 people on our tour and we all sat around the edge of the speedboat.

It felt like a lot of people but you still had sufficient room and didn’t feel uncomfortable.

Our tour guide then gave us a brief overview of the day explaining where we would be stopping and what to expect , we were then on our way!

First up was Koh Haa island, this took about 30 minutes from the beach.

Here we stopped by a cave, at first glance you wouldn’t of expected there to be much to see but once under the water it was amazing!

There were dozens of huge starfish, big schools of fish, lobsters, a sea snake and colourful fish swimming all around.

We stayed here snorkelling for half an hour before moving on to Koh Rok Island.

The journey to Koh Rok island took about 50 minutes due to windy conditions, meaning the sea was quite rough.

Exploring Koh Rok Island

When we arrived the oceans surrounding it are truly stunning. The incredible scenery framing the beach is so natural and wild . Tin adventures were also the first boat to arrive, meaning we had completely unspoilt sand and oceans, empty of people!

It is an amazing location and to be able to walk along the beach where there were no other footprints was very special.

We arrived at Koh Rok around 11am and we stayed until 1.30pm . This gives you plenty of time to explore the island and it’s surrounding ocean.

Shortly after arrival our buffet lunch was served, it was all incredibly tasty and consisted of rice, Massaman curry, mixed vegetables, fruit and drinks. There was plenty to go around and lots left over if anyone wanted seconds.

After lunch more tours started arriving on the island and it did begin to feel a little cramped, I am grateful our boat was one of the first to arrive as we got a feeling of real peace when we first explored.

We spent the rest of our time swimming along the corals just off the beach, and walking up and down exploring.

Keep an eye on the jungles as giant monitor lizards call this national park home! 🦎

Monitor lizard on Koh Rok Island

When we were all back on the boat we headed round the sister island for more snorkelling, here we saw tons more colourful fish and another sea snake!

We spent half an hour here before moving on to the final spot.

The final spot was just between the two islands, this was my favourite because the captain grabbed Jack and I and said he wanted to show us something, we jumped in all excited and doing our best to keep up with him.

After a short swim away from the boat he told us to dive down with him and showed us a family of clown fish living in an anemone! This was a bucket list moment, as its a fish I have always wanted to see in the wild after watching Nemo as a child.

🙋🏻‍♀️ If you get to this last stop and want to see them, grab a member of the crew and ask them to show you! They are very happy to share their knowledge.

After our final stop it was time to head back, all pretty exhausted from a full on day of swimming we were quite glad to be heading home.

The journey back took us around 1.30 hours due to the windy conditions and rough seas, this was quite a journey and a few people were sea sick.

If you don’t have strong sea legs I would recommend doing this tour on a calm day , it was very windy when we went and it made the journeys between unenjoyable!

Koh Rok Island Tree

Best time to visit

Koh Rok is located just off the south coast of Koh Lanta therefore the weather is pretty much the same.

Koh Lanta’s typical high season is between November – December , however, October tends to be the worst month to visit due to monsoon season, because of this some of the weather can be expected to overflow into November.

November/December – April is seen as the dry season.

Whilst May to October is the monsoon season there are still plenty of sunny days.

Because it is the quieter season you can get some great cheap accommodation from May – July and the island will feel almost empty!

Personally I think the best time to visit Koh Lanta is between January and April if you are looking for calm waters and sunny conditions.

Where to stay in Koh Lanta

Luxury: Long Beach Chalet

If you are looking for a luxurious stay on Koh Lanta, this is your place. Offering Thai style bungalows and chalets on stilts you can choose from rooms overlooking the ocean in the beach zone or overlooking the gardens in the garden zone. They all boast incredible views with some of the most exclusive bungalows hosting jacuzzi baths on the terrace overlooking Koh Lanta’s most poplar beach. Long Beach Chalet has a large pool, private seating on the beach for its guests, an onsite restaurant and for additional charge you can arrange all day trips here, as well as massages, laundry and transport.

Mid range: Chomview Resort

This is where we stayed for 10 nights while on Koh Lanta, it was everything we wanted and more. There is a wide range of rooms but they are all very large, we stayed in the Superior Double Room with Balcony and I highly recommend. The rooms come equipped with air-conditioning, fridge, tea and coffee making facilities, private bathroom, fresh drinking water, large balcony or terrace some have views of the mountains or pool. Chomview Resort also has a water park meaning it is the perfect place for families, and there are many giant figurines around the resort, it is definitely aimed at families. However, do not let this put you off if you are a couple looking for something quieter. Because of the waterpark the pool and accommodation is so peaceful during the day so you do not feel at all like you are staying at a waterpark.

Budget: Hub of Joys Hostel

Located near to Long Beach Hub of Joys hostel is popular amongst backpackers, the hostel offers free bikes to get around the island, free parking a shared lounge to meet others and a restaurant serving up an exceptional daily breakfast included in your room rate. There is free wifi throughout the hostel as well as air-conditioning in the rooms and a shared bathroom. Hub of Joys Hostel is happy to help you arrange any tours and excursions and there is free popcorn and other snacks available for all guests!

Tin Adventures Snorkelling Tour Boat Koh Rok Island

Final thoughts

Koh Rok Snorkelling Tour with Tin Adventure was quite an expensive tour, however I feel the crew and overall day justified the price.

From start to finish the crew were on hand to help you with anything you need, they kept the day fun and entertaining and were informative about the locations and what fish you could see.

As well as that the scenery above and below water was breathtaking and not something you will easily forget.

I do highly recommend the Koh Rok Snorkelling Tour . Check it out on Get Your Guide to book your place, trust me you will not be disappointed!
