Phang Nga Bay – The Many Ways to Explore Phang Nga

  • Phang Nga , Tours , What to Do?
  • Last updated 3 May 2024 13 September 2024

How to visit Phang Nga Bay?

Phang Nga Bay is one of the most amazing places we had the chance to explore. We’ve been there countless times, by boat, car, bike, luxury yacht, longtail, kayak and even on a Chinese Junk. Each visit is a new experience. Sunny, cloudy or rainy: Phang Nga wears a different dress for each occasion and has always been at the top of our list of Things to Do in Phuket . The bay is about 20 km north of Phuket Island and 40 km from the pier, where we usually board a boat in Phuket Island.

Phang Nga Bay Kayaking

How to Get to Phang Nga?

Classic kayak day trips.

Kayaking in Hong Island in Phang Nga

The easiest way to discover Phang Nga is to book a typical tour with your hotel. You will always have a fantastic day, and you won’t have to worry about anything since all tours include transfers from and to your hotel. Note that this is a basic tour so it can be a little busy and a little noisy. If you want a real eco-friendly experience, pick the one below.

Popular Ways to Discover Phang Nga Bay

John gray sea canoe.

Phang Nga by Sea Canoe by John Gray

Much better than the classic tours is the surreal Hong by Starlight kayak exploration with the famous John Gray Sea Canoe, our favourite day trip near Phuket. The kayaks silently glide in narrow passages and we enjoyed the sounds of birds and cicadas over the soft noise of the paddlers. The guides are knowledgeable and respectful of their surroundings and truly take us into a magical landscape out of this world. Read more

Best tours in Phuket - Day trips and excursions

One of the fanciest ways we explored Phang Nga was on a luxury cruise. It adds a surreal touch to an already jaw-dropping landscape as you drink chilled white wine on the deck and admire the majestic cliffs rising high above your head. Read more

Popular Luxury Cruises

Rent a van for a day.

rent a van with a driver

Renting a van with a knowledgeable local driver is another stress-free way to explore Phang by road. The trip usually includes the amazing Samet Nangshe Viewpoint , the Reclining Buddha Cave , and the Lampi Waterfall, then drop you at the pier where you can go to James Bond Island and Koh Panyee , the amazing village on stilts. The itinerary is flexible, and the driver usually knows the area well.

By longtail boat

longtail boat

Boat rides and day trip tours are effortless to book from your hotel, often including transfers from and to your hotel and lunch. However, it’s much more exciting to do it yourself if you have a car. Drive to the Surakul Pier or Phang Nga Bay Harbour (sometimes cheaper), where you can join any longtail boat. You can even rent your own, which is best, but certainly not the cheapest.

What to see in Phang Nga?

Phang Nga has some landmarks, more or less attractive, but places are famous for a reason. The immense limestone cliffs in the bay area are the main attraction. You saw them in movies, even in Star Wars and James Bond.

James Bond Island

James Bond Island

The best known is the intriguing James Bond Island, famous for a movie that most people nowadays haven’t even seen, called The Man with the Golden Gun. The real name of this rock formation is Koh Tapu, which means ‘Nail Island”, well justified by the funny elongated and unbalanced shape. A tiny island next to it is where dozens of longtail boats permanently disembark hordes of tourists for the usual and unavoidable ‘James Bond Island’ photo.

Longtail boats in Phang Nga Bay

Not far from this is Koh Panyi, another top-rated stop on the boat trip. This surprising and quite large village entirely built on stilts lives mainly from fishing and tourism. At certain times, Koh Panyee gets as crowded as James Bond Island, but we always visit it outside the rush hour, and it’s all ours!

Koh Panyi in Phang Nga Bay

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint

Point de vue de Samet Nangshe - Vue sur la baie de Phang Nga

Samet Nangshe, situated in Phang Nga Bay, offers a breathtaking panoramic viewpoint. While it may be a bit distant from Phuket island, the drive is well worth it, especially if you have access to a car or a large motorcycle. Once we reach the top, we can marvel at the stunning limestone formations of Phang Nga Bay, although reaching the viewpoint requires some effort. To get there, we have to drive 25 kilometres beyond the Sarasin Bridge, which connects Phuket to the mainland. However, the journey through the scenic backcountry of Thailand is truly exceptional.

The Cave of the Reclining Buddha

Buddha Cave in Phang Nga

Whether you explore it on your own, by car or by boat, no trip to Phuket would be complete without visiting the fabulous Phang Nga Bay. Another notable landmark you should visit is Wat Suwan Khuha, with a huge golden reclining Buddha hidden inside a cave. Here too, beware of the naughty monkeys; they are known to pull rubber strips and antennas from cars.

reclining-buddha-cave

Koh Hong is a small and very popular island located halfway between Koh Yao Noi and Krabi, about 7 km from each and technically 30 km east of the closest port of Phuket Island. The island is superb and consists of two enclosed beaches and a bay that reminds a lot of the famous Maya Bay on Phi Phi Island .

Laem Haad Beach

Beach Peninsula in Koh Yao Yai Phuket

Laem Haad Beach is a beautiful strip of sand at the very north of Koh Yao Yai. Most private cruises will stop here on the way back from Phang Nga Bay for a short time, allowing you to enjoy the soft sand, coconut trees and amazing views.

Other islands you will visit

Koh Panak in Phang Nga near Phuket

Koh Panak is a small sandy cove just below an immense cliff with a cave on its side to access an enclosed lagoon called ‘hong’, the Thai word for ‘room’. Inside this lagoon are mangrove trees and rocks with surreal but naturally formed animal shapes.

Kudu Island in Phang Nga

Kudu Yai is a superb and unusual creek surrounded by unusual sharp rock formations. The beach is tiny, usually with just a few people enjoying a swim and taking some photos.

Koh Yao Islands

koh yao noi island

Koh Yao consists of two Islands: Koh Yao Yai, the largest but the least populated, and Koh Yao Noi, home to many fishing communities and the most populated of the two. Koh Yao Noi is home to many hotels, from budget bungalows to fancy 5-star hotels with amazing private pool villas and even luxury glamping. Koh Yao doesn’t have large fancy beaches like Phuket has, but it has the charm of a real Thai island atmosphere and the amazing background of Phang Nga limestone cliffs.

nok island

Koh Nok is a small island where cruises stop for a short break or even a lunch on the small beach. If they are brave enough, visitors can climb the limestone cliff through the trees to reach the top, but that is quite challenging, even with the provided rope. If you are lucky, you might even see a giant monitor or two lazily walking around the beach.

Driving from Phuket to Phang Nga is fun. The road passing by Phang Nga town, more of a discreet small village, is lined by the same incredibly high cliffs covered with dense vegetation. At the intersection of Phang Nga Town and Krabi road, a beautiful park hidden from view reveals a small intricate maze of caves well paved and fun to explore.

The park is very popular with locals who enjoy a picnic near the cave, so you can expect to see food and drink vendors are all around the place… It’s a nice little stop, but watch out the naughty little monkeys would be more than happy to eat your sausages.

The best time to visit Phang Nga Bay is during the dry season,  between November and April.

During these months, Thailand’s weather is just perfect for engaging in outdoor activities like kayaking, boating, and exploring the hidden caves and picturesque islands sprinkled throughout the emerald-green waters of the bay.

For instance, planning your visit in early December helps you escape the Christmas vacationing crowds, secure cheaper boat trip costs, and experience intimate group explorations from Phang Nga town.

Despite the natural urge to rush, I’d highly recommend spending  at least three full days  in Phang Nga to truly soak in the richness of its experience.

The best way to experience James Bond Island is by  taking a speed boat day trip.  Start your day early – think 8 AM – to beat the crowds and hit the limestone cliffs and emerald waters.

James Bond Island: How To Visit Phang Nga Bay In Thailand

Thailand’s Phang Nga Bay is loaded with exotic island scenery, and one of the best things to see in the bay would have to be the famous James Bond Island, with its unusual balanced rock.

Also known as Nail Island or ‘Ko Ta Pu’ in the Thai language, James Bond Island got its current nickname when the location was featured in the 1974 Bond movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun.’

Nowadays, Phang Nga Bay is a national park in Thailand where you can go kayaking and see dozens of amazing islands with caves, mangroves, wildlife, and even a floating village called Koh Panyee.

It’s easy to visit Phang Nga Bay on a day trip (by boat) from Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Lak, and that gives you enough time to see James Bond Island and the other main sights in the bay.

This travel guide for Phang Nga Bay will explain how to get there, top things to see and do, best tour packages to use, where to stay, and everything else you need to know before you go!

Best Phang Nga Bay Tour Packages

The only way to visit James Bond Island is with a tour, and GetYourGuide has prearranged day tours from Phuket or similar day trips from Khao Lak or Krabi , complete with hotel transfers, boat ride, lunch, shared tour of the islands, and same day return.

These day tours visit all of the top sights in Phang Nga Bay, including James Bond Island, Hong island, and the Koh Panyee floating village, and you can also use a canoe or kayak to explore some of the limestone caves up close.

They also have private tours or semi-private tours if you prefer that, although the prices are higher. We’ve used GetYourGuide for lots of day tours and activities around the world, and they’re great. Highly recommended!

Book Now: James Bond Island Tour From Phuket / Khao Lak / Krabi

Where Is James Bond Island?

James Bond Island is located in Phang Nga Bay, in southern Thailand.

There’s no airport, hotels, or accommodation in the bay since it’s a national park, but you can easily visit from other places in Thailand.

How To Get To James Bond Island Thailand

The only way to get to James Bond Island is to book a tour of Phang Nga Bay by boat. You can choose between a Thai longtail boat, big wooden boat, or speedboat, and any of these are good options.

The speedboat is fastest and you’re usually in a smaller and more private tour group, but it costs more. We’ve done the James Bond Island tour with all kinds of boats, and always had a good experience with each of them.

The closest place to fly for this is the international airport in Phuket (HKT) or the one in Krabi (KBV). Both of these airports have cheap flights from Bangkok. You can shop for flights to Thailand on Skyscanner.

There are a bunch of boat companies making the trip to James Bond Island daily from Phuket, Krabi, or Khao Lak, and they usually include hotel pickup and drop-off. Again, we recommend GetYourGuide for their shared or private tours !

The boat journey through Phang Nga Bay is stunning in its own right, with dozens of rocky islands rising out of the sea in all directions. However, one of the best parts of the trip is kayaking through the limestone caves. It’s probably one of the most amazing kayaking experiences I’ve had anywhere in the world!

Visiting James Bond Island: What To Expect

When you first arrive at James Bond Island, the boat will park on the back side of the main island (Khao Phing Kan) and then you can disembark and walk around on the island for awhile.

Khao Phing Kan is a very unusual island covered with limestone hills, and the main attraction is the pointy balanced rock, which seems to float on the sea. Unlike other places in Thailand, the snorkeling isn’t any good at Phang Nga Bay because the water is murky and there’s no coral.

However, if you’re lucky, you still might see some wildlife here. We saw a hawk flying around, and later on we spotted a baby monitor lizard near the beach. We took a few pictures of him before he climbed a tree and disappeared.

Most Phang Nga tour packages give you 1 hour at James Bond Island, which is plenty of time to swim at the beach, see the famous floating rock, and attempt your best James Bond pose for photos.

Ko Ta Pu

The floating rock — Ko Ta Pu — also known as Nail Island

Of course, because of its scenery, James Bond Island has become one of the most famous spots in Thailand, so it’s very crowded with tourists at most times of the day unless you arrive early in the morning.

There are a bunch of makeshift souvenir stalls on the island taking advantage of this, but the prices are a bit higher than normal so it’s not a good idea to do any shopping here.

If you want to escape the crowds and take some nice pictures, you can walk up the concrete steps and there are usually less people at the viewpoints above the rock, while the area close to the beach always tends to be the busiest and most crowded part of the island.

James Bond Island was popularized and got its current nickname after being featured as the villain’s hideout in the 1974 Bond movie ‘The Man with the Golden Gun.’ The movie bombed with critics, but the location became a hit.

In spite of the crowds, we were happy to see that the island has been kept pretty clean, and we didn’t notice any garbage on the ground or in the water. Overall, it’s an amazing place and you have to see it at least once!

Visiting Phang Nga Bay – Tourist Fees

The Phang Nga Bay is a national park in Thailand, so they charge a tourist fee of 300 Baht (~$9 USD) for adults, and 150 baht for kids 3-14 years old.

Some Phang Nga Bay tours may already include these fees in the total price when you book, but usually you pay them separately in cash when you first start the tour, or else when you get off the boat at James Bond Island.

More Things To See In Phang Nga Bay

Here’s a list of some of the top sights in Phang Nga Bay. You can see most of these places (along with James Bond Island) in a single day tour:

  • Koh Hong Island: Not to be confused with the Koh Hong island in the Krabi province, this is a beautiful island in Phang Nga with a sandy beach and several limestone caves that you can explore by kayak. It’s one of the most spectacular kayaking spots in Thailand, so don’t miss it!
  • Koh Phanak Island: Another big limestone island with several caves, including the Bat Cave and Ice Cream Cave, which got its name from the bright white stalactite rocks inside. You can also see mangroves and wild monkeys here.
  • Koh Panyee Floating Village: A very interesting little fishing village with a population of about 1,700 people. This floating village was founded about 200 years ago by Malay muslims, and the spot often serves as a lunch stop on James Bond boat tours.
  • Samet Nangshe Viewpoint : This amazing viewpoint is technically located outside of the national park, and you can only visit it by land (not on the James Bond boat tour). However, it has jaw dropping views of Phang Nga Bay, along with its many mangroves and islands. It’s one of the best views I’ve seen anywhere in the world, and the sunrise is also impressive. I wrote a separate travel guide for this viewpoint, which you can read here !

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint can only be reached by land (not on the James Bond boat tour), but it has incredible views of Phang Nga Bay.

1-Day Itinerary For The James Bond Island Tour

Here’s a sample itinerary for what the James Bond Island tour generally looks like:

  • 7:30 AM – Hotel pickup and drive to the pier by bus or minivan
  • 8:30 AM – Transfer to boat and start the journey to Phang Nga Bay
  • 9:30 AM – Start sightseeing in Phang Nga Bay
  • 12:00 PM – Lunch at the boat or on the floating village (Koh Panyee)
  • 1:00 PM – More sightseeing in Phang Nga Bay
  • 5:00 PM – Arrive at the pier and transfer back to your hotel by bus or minivan

Keep in mind every tour is different, so your schedule may not follow this exactly. You can check with your tour provider about the itinerary before you go.

Is James Bond Island Open / Closed?

Yes, James Bond Island is OPEN for tourists as of 2024!

The Thai government likes to close some of their islands for conservation during the rainy season, but Phang Nga Bay and James Bond Island generally stays open all year.

Best Time To Visit James Bond Island Thailand

Any time is good to visit James Bond Island, although there are some seasonal differences.

The weather in the Andaman Sea area of Thailand (including Phang Nga Bay) is best from November to April, when it’s more dry and sunny. However, this is also the peak tourist season, so it’s a bit more crowded with day tours.

The weather is not as good from May to October. There are more rainy days, and there are frequent storms in the evenings. However, there are less tourists in these months and it’s still possible to have a great trip.

It’s very unusual for boat tours to be canceled at James Bond Island because it’s inside of a large bay that protects it from rough waves coming from the sea.

We witnessed some big storms in the rainy season, but these were usually in the evenings when we were back at our hotel, so it wasn’t a problem. Most of the pictures in this James Bond Island travel guide were actually taken in July, during the rainy season.

We’ve visited Phang Nga Bay in the dry season and also in the rainy season, on separate trips. In both cases, we had an amazing time and the weather was mostly great for weeks.

So in conclusion, there’s really no bad time to visit James Bond Island!

What To Bring To Phang Nga Bay

Here are some packing suggestions for your visit to James Bond Island Thailand:

  • Waterproof Bag . Essential for keeping your electronics safe on the boats around Ko Ta Pu and Koh Hong island. I brought a 30 liter bag and was able to fit my drone, tablet, camera, phone, and a bunch of other stuff inside. Everything was kept dry, even when I took the bag swimming a few times!
  • Waterproof Phone Pouch . Same as above, but these are for your phone only. Great if you don’t have other electronics and just need something small to protect your phone.
  • Sunscreen. There is usually some shade in the speedboats and longtail boats, but you can still get roasted while swimming or walking on the beach at Ko Ta Pu, so you’ll want to bring a hat and sunscreen for the boat tours.
  • Snacks & Drinks. You might want to pack some snacks and drinks in the boat when touring the islands. You can bring these from Phuket or Krabi. There are also snacks and drinks available to buy in the national park, but the prices are higher.

Can You Fly A Drone At Phang Nga Bay?

Yes and no. Thailand is pretty relaxed about drones, and you can fly them in most of the islands, but you aren’t allowed to fly in the national parks.

That includes James Bond Island, which is patrolled by park rangers who will fine you if you’re caught flying a drone. They’re especially strict there, and the rangers are watching all areas of the island constantly.

However, if you’re discreet it’s still possible to fly from other locations in or near the bay. The best place to do this is at the Samet Nangshe Viewpoint , which has great visibility of Phang Nga Bay. You’ll still want to be considerate and only fly in places where it won’t bother people, of course.

Other Tips For Phang Nga Bay

  • Bathrooms: There are bathrooms on James Bond Island, although you may have to pay a small fee in Thai baht (bring some cash for that). If you book the tour with a big wooden boat, those also have toilets in the boat, although the Thai longtail boats and speedboats usually do not.
  • Cell Service: We had good phone reception on the boat while touring all over Phang Nga Bay, but you may lose signal when you go ashore on James Bond Island because of the steep mountains surrounding Ko Ta Pu.
  • Mosquitoes: We didn’t really see any mosquitoes in Phang Nga Bay or James Bond Island, but you can buy bug repellent in Phuket, Krabi, or other places in Thailand if you want it. Malaria isn’t present in this area.

Phi Phi Or James Bond Island: Which Is Better?

So which is better, Phi Phi or James Bond Island? That’s an important question.

They’re both great, but I have to say Phi Phi island is better. No offense to James Bond island, but Phi Phi has the best scenery above and below the ocean, with clear blue water and lots of fish and coral to see while snorkeling or scuba diving.

There’s also more to see and do in Phi Phi overall. Even if you don’t care about snorkeling, it’s hard to beat Maya Bay , Pileh Lagoon, and the other epic sights in the Phi Phi islands. They are truly world class.

Don’t get me wrong, Phang Nga Bay is still amazing and you should definitely see James Bond island if you’re able. Try to see both Phi Phi and James Bond if you have time! Unfortunately you can’t see them both in one day since they’re located in opposite directions from Phuket (north vs south), but it’s possible to see both places in two days!

Is James Bond Island Worth It?

Yes, James Bond Island is absolutely worth it in my book! There is loads of amazing scenery in Phang Nga Bay, and the prices for everything are very affordable.

In spite of the crowds, this is still one of the best day trips in Thailand, and it’s very accessible because of its location between Phuket and Krabi.

Hold up! Have you thought about the importance of travel insurance?

Remember this:  anything can happen. Travel is fun, but your health is more important; thus, I always, always, always recommend getting insured during the duration of your trip. I have benefitted from having one multiple times, and it has been covered for thousands of euros!

The latest one is not necessarily “health” related – it was during the peak of the unspeakable terrible C that consumed the world. I was living in Vietnam when I received an email from SafetyWing (my travel insurance) that if I want they’ll fly be back home to Finland as the world goes through a global emergency alert. I flew back fully covered, and dealing with  SafetyWing  was a breeze despite the roar of people in contact with them trying to get back home.

I can’t highly recommend them enough. Otherwise, I rarely get sick; hence I don’t always need to head to a hospital, but knowing that I have travel insurance makes me feel safe at the very least.

Read my post about  why you should get travel insurance  for more information. Otherwise, you can get a free quote from  SafetyWing  – they’re the best, in my opinion.

What are my favorite travel must-haves?

As a frequent traveler, I’ve learned a lot throughout my years of travel, and there are five items that I always carry with me regardless of where I go and how long the trip is. Here are my five travel must-haves!

  • Warm packable jacket  – I always carry a light jacket, even when heading to warm countries. There hasn’t been a time I never used it, especially in airports and planes.
  • Transparent toiletry bag  – I often bring a carry-on if I’m only traveling within Europe for a few days. Life is so much easier to go through security checks with a transparent toiletry bag.
  • Kindle Paperwhite  – I love a good read and always take my Kindle everywhere. It keeps me entertained during long flights and waiting times.
  • Powerbank  – I don’t know how I could travel without one! Having a power bank saved me a ton since I carry a lot of electronic devices with me.
  • Travel Adapter  – I never leave my luggage without a travel adapter! I carry one with me all the time. It is just one of that travel-must haves that doesn’t hurt to have in your bag at all times.

How to Visit the Incredible Phang Nga Bay & James Bond Island

Visiting Phang Nga Bay is a must for everyone who travels around Thailand. This area is the most wonderful example of the Southern’s Thailand landscape. The scenic limestone mountains rise straight from the sea up to 350 m high, like the famous of Phang Nga Bay in James Bond Island. Inside many of them, there are tunnels and sea caves visitors can pass by boat or explore by foot. It’s definitely an impressive location. Most people visit Phang Nga Bay as a day trip from Phuket or Krabi. However, all those tours first arrive by bus to Phang Nga Province. To shorten the trip we decided to come to Phang Nga by ourselves for 1 night and do a long tail boat tour from here. Read on to find out more!

Phang Nga Town

Phang Nga is a small, quite town right at the center of Ao Phang-nga National Park. The landscape around the town is wonderful. There are some cool things to do in Phang Nga , but the main reason of coming here is as a base for exploring the Phang-Nga Bay.

Exploring Phang Nga Bay

The tour starts usually around 8 AM when you are picked up from your hotel. We insisted on starting earlier, already at 6AM to avoid the crowds. It was a great idea.

The Mangrooves

Starting at the pier, you will firstly pass by a large area of mangroves. In this spot, there were several rivers flowing into the sea. The mangroves are impressive, and so the area is protected and preserved. Your boatman might agree to take you in few of the small rivers. However, the navigation through the mangrove requires skilful piloting and is possible only during high tide.

Khao Khian  or  Writing Hill

Khao Khian  or Writing Hill is a shallow cave that contains coloured drawings of people, crocodiles, dolphins and sharks estimated to be about 3,000 years old! You can admire them right from the boat.

Panyi is a century old fishing village build on the sea. The sights, sounds, and smells on Panyi are typical of Thai villages. Dock at the floatable pier and navigate through the labyrinthine of alleys. There are countless shops and vendors selling all kind of stuff: clothing, souvenirs, food. It looks like a bazaar built on water. The whole village is Muslim and there even is a big mosque: the only building built on the solid ground.

Most tours stop here for lunch.

↬ Note : We arrived at Panyi around 10AM. The village was still sleepy and everything was closed. Unfortunately, we experiences rather a cold welcome. Nobody would answer our greetings, people would push us while walking. It seemed like the whole village is only tourist-money oriented. As they were not ready to sell us anything, they didn’t bother to be polite ?We are not traveling to judge… however we are sadden of how tourism stripped some places of their authenticity and pushed people to see visitors only through $$$ bills…

Tham Lot is a limestone grotto sculptured by centuries of Asian weather and sea water. The cave is large enough for boats to go through. There are also stalactites hanging down from the roof. Most likely you will just cruise through it. During the day, it’s a popular place to canoe & explore the nature around. There were kayak vendors on the site at the early hour we were there.

James Bond Island

This is the most popular place to visit in Phang Nga bay. It became famous since the Hollywood production “The Man with the Golden Gun”, starring James Bond. The island real name is Khao Phingkan meaning two hills. There are two islands connected by a tiny central beach. But one of those two hills is split in two, and leans against the other. A Nail Islet looking like a spike placed into the sea, it is perhaps the most photographed object in the whole marine park.

↬ Info : There is a Phang-nga Bay Marine Office here and each visitor must pay 300 THB (9EUR) entrance fee for James Bond Island.

Our experience

Visiting Phang Nga Bay was on top of our bucket list for a long time. Especially Martyna who did the researches and was extremely excited to see this place in real. Most tours visit the same spots while cruising around the bay. We decided to pay extra and start very early to avoid the crowds and be able to explore more places for longer…Unfortunately, for the first time ever during our trips, we met a person who lied to our faces, took our money and didn’t deliver what we agreed upon. ?We wrote about it next so you can avoid the same disappointment and get a better experience ?

AVOID MR KEAN TOURS

We were approached by a man named Mr. Kean right after we set foot off the bus at the bus station in Phang-Nga town. He seemed very nice, knowledgable and decent. As our initial plan was to go to the pier to find a boatman there, we decided to trust Mr. Kean and book a tour for following morning with him. He understood our idea of starting early, wanting to explore more and independently. He gave us a map on which he circled the places we will go to, put the price and hours of the tour. We were suppose to be picked up at 6AM and finish the tour at 12.30PM.

As we were planning to go to Krabi straight after, he even suggested that we can leave our backpacks at his office at the bus station so we wouldn’t have to come back to the hotel to pick them up. It all seemed just perfect.

We payed a lot of money for the trip: 2500 THB (75 EUR), without lunch. But hey: it’s dreams coming true, worth any money. Or so we thought…

The Experience You Don’t Want to Relive

The day started great. The sun even came out that morning, which was unlikely for a rainy season! Sure, our boatman spoke zero English, but we managed to communicate as much as necessary. First, we passed by the impressive Writting Hills and Tham Lot cave. We got to the James Bond Island right after and we had it almost all for ourselves. We stayed there for an hour, exploring and taking pictures.

It was just after 9AM as we got on the long tail boat again and thought we will go to the next location. We had the map on which the day before Mr. Kean had circled spots we will visit. However, the boatman just turned around and started cruising back ?it was just after 9AM. We were suppose to cruise for another 3H. We told him to go further, but he continued saying ‘James Bond and back’. Completely confused we called Mr. Kean convinced that he will just explain the tour to his boatman and we will continue exploring.

Mr. Kean however told us that the furthest his boat goes is James Bond Island and we are done cruising Phang Nga Bay for the day! We told him that we payed for the boat until 12.30PM and have a map with the places he promised to take us to. He pretended that it was a misunderstanding and it was our fault. But we had his hand writing with the plan on the paper! We argued on the phone, until he just hanged up! We tried calling him again and again, but he wouldn’t pick up… The boatman didn’t care and continued driving back. We were asking him to go further. Martyna started crying and even begging him. It was ridiculous. We were IN Phang Nga Bay. All the islands were in our reach. And yet we could explore them!

The disappointment

We have never been so disappointed before. The dreams, weeks of preparation was all ruined by one man…

But that wasn’t over yet. The boatman, following the instruction of Mr. Kean, stopped at the Panyi Village. We told him we want just 10 min to see it. It was barely 10AM and if we couldn’t explore Phang Nga Bay, we wanted to get to Krabi as soon as possible. However, returning to the boat, the boatman was nowhere to be found. We waited for nearly 40 min before he came back saying that he was having breakfast…

As soon as we left the village, the motor on the boat broke down. It took another 30 min to get it running again. ‘Yes’, Martyna told the boatman “Karma is a bitch”.

At the end, we came back to the bus station around 11.30 and straight got a bus to Krabi.

Mr. Kean hid himself somewhere at the station during that time. We picked up our backpacks from his office and waited for him for a while. But he was not there. A coward, not wanting to face people who wanted to tell him who he really is: a liar and bad person.

We repeat again: AVOID MR. KEAN who will approach you at the bus station in Phang Nga town. You can google his name and see for yourself that we were not the only ones to get scammed. We just wish we would have checked ourselves before booking a tour with him…

How to book a long tail boat in Phang Nga

The best option is to rent a scooter and go to Sarakul Pier . There you can ask the boat owners directly to take you on a cruise.

↬ Note : We suggest you NOT to book at this pier as it’s more expensive. Also that’s where our unfortunate tour with Mr. Kean started.

Alternatively ask the owner of your hotel for help. All tourists arrive to Phang Nga wanting to visit the bay. Most hotels have their own boats or know good boatman that are reliable.

↬ Note : When we arrived at our accommodation and told the owner we booked a boat with Mr. Kean, he warned us that Mr. Kean doesn’t provide good tours. He said ‘With Mr. Kean you go. And come back. No more’. However, it was too late to change as we already payed the full price…

What you need to know

When to visit.

You can visit Phang Nga Bay throughout the year. The sea is rather shallow with an average depth of a few metres only. The waves never reach more than one meter high even in the monsoon months from May to October. However, you will have more chance for blue skies and better weather from November to April.

How long does the tour last?

Typically the tour lasts 3-4 hours.

Should I choose a private boat or a tour?

Answer to that really depends on your budget and amount of people you travel with. Boats can accommodate up 10 people, so if you are in a group, it’s the perfect choice.

The private boat will be more expensive, but if you get a good deal and a good boatman (not like us), you will be independent of where you travel, how long you stay at each spot and where to go next. You have also more chance of arriving at the place with lesser people around.

We payed for a private boat we payed 2500 THB (75 EUR). It included pick up and drop of from the hotel to the pier and should include lunch (ours didn’t).

At the Sarakul Pier , you should find private boats for 1500 THB (45 EUR) including lunch.

A tour on a boat with up to 10 other people costs around 800 THB (24 EUR) per person.

↬ TIP : There is 300 THB (9EUR) extra charge at James Bond island as a ticket to the marine reserve of Phang Nga Bay.

What to bring

Wear light clothing, swimwear and flip flops. Take towels, hat, biodegradable sunscreen, sunglasses and snorkel gear. Pack a few snacks and water in reusable water bottle . And take cash for tickets at James Bond island.

Remember to pack a camera with plenty of memory card and extra batteries.

↬ TIP : It’s forbidden to fly drones in Phang-Nga Bay.

Where to go next?

Phang Nga is only one ‘must see’ destination in Thailand. How about hopping on a 1 h bus ride and visiting Krabi or diving in Koh Tao next?
