A car and train bridge links Venice to the mainland, but once you arrive at Tronchetto - Piazzale Roma (the bus and cars terminal) or Railway Station, there are only two ways to travel around Venice: on foot or by boat.
The expression “high water” indicates an unusually high tide in Venice. This phenomenon especially affects the lagoon of Venice and can cause flooding in the cities of Venice and Chioggia.

The first time I ever arrived in Venice, I was taken aback by just how many things there were to see and do. The floating city is not only visually aesthetic, it’s also filled to the brim with history, rich culture, and delicious food.
The Private 5 hrs Grand Day Tour of Venice on Foot and by Boat with Tickets Included is the perfect way to get to know the Floating City in one comprehensive experience that will make you fall in love.
The only thing that I felt could’ve made this tour better, was offering a hotel pickup instead of having to meet up in central Venice. However, it was still quite easy to access from our hotel and our guide was super friendly and welcoming, answering any questions we had.
I was really excited to discover that we had skip-the-line access to many of the most popular sites, including the impressive St. Mark’s Basilica, leaving us more time to explore.
Our first stop was at the Doge’s Palace, where I learned about the dark history behind this place, even getting the opportunity to walk through the famous prisons, where countless prisoners were held.
The Piazza San Marco and Basilica di San Marco (St. Mark’s) were absolutely beautiful, learning about the history of the church and the square as our guide led us around.
Speaking of churches, I also loved seeing the Santa Maria Formosa Rensaissance Church dedicated to the Holy Virgin and boasting quite the interesting background.
We cruised along the Calle del Paradiso typical Venetian alley way with breathtaking Byzantine and Gothic architecture, before arriving to the gorgeous Grand Canal to take a relaxing 1-hour ride along the waterways.
If you’re looking to see a lot of the city in a short amount of time, this is a fantastic choice!

- Departure: Campo S. Giacomo di Rialto, 30125 Venezia VE
- Departure Time: 9:00, 10:00 or 11:00 AM
- Includes: Private expert local guide, skip-the-line tickets to St Mark’s Basilica and Doge’s Palace, private gondola ride
Venice is one of my favorite cities in the world, and one of the tours that made me fall in love with it so, is this next one. The Venice in a Day Private Tour allows you to dive into the romance, mystery, and allure thanks to an expert local guide in a private tour setting.
Through narrow alleys to smooth waterways, there are so many stories ready to be explored from this once major financial and maritime power.
Our tour began in the Piazza San Marco, which is simply breathtaking, featuring Saint Mark’s Basilica, the Doge’s Palace, and plenty of ornate arches and stunning structures that will take you back in time.
After our guide asked us about our specific interests to incorporate into the tour, we then headed to the Basilica di San Marco, skipping the lines to admire the ornate beauty of the Patriarchate of Venice without the wait.
We then headed to the Doge’s Palace with VIP entry once again, so there was no waiting and we got to see all of the private hidden apartments, along with the Hall of Great Council, Bridge of Sighs, and more.
It was very interesting, albeit a bit sad learning about the wrath and torment that occurred here. After walking around and learning all about the Doges’ span of nearly 1000 years of ruling, we then took a more lighthearted turn onto a fantastic eatery for lunch.
We then took a leisurely stroll through the charming streets to all kinds of bridges and piazzas, like the famous Rialto bridge and Marco Polo’s house! Closeby, we stopped by Campo Santa Maria Formosa for a private gondola ride, which is so exquisitely “Venice” in all its glory!
It may be cliche, sure, but it was one of my favorite parts of the tour, which is saying a lot because I loved it all!
3. Highlights & Hidden Gems With Locals: Best of Venice Private Tour
- Duration: 3 hours
- Departure Time: Between 9:00 AM & 12:00 PM
- Includes: Custom private tour, local guide, see the city’s top attractions and secret gems, 1 local drink and tasting
Venice is a city of romance, mystery, and intricate history, but there’s so much more than what originally meets the eye. If you’d really like to capture its authentic essence in just one day, this is one of the best tours to take.
The Highlights & Hidden Gems with Locals: Best of Venice Private Tour does a great job summing it up, offering a more behind-the-scenes look at the floating city.
We met our guide in central Venice, who was a local and very passionate about his city, which made the tour that much more intriguing. As it is a completely private tour, he even asked for our input and what we were specifically interested in, to tailor it to our liking.
With exclusive access and skip-the-line tickets to major attractions, we also got to see so much more than we would have had we purchased the tickets separately.
While being able to see the most popular sites like this was certainly fun, it was equally as interesting being able to see the more off-the-beaten-path discoveries like little campos, tranquil canals, and plenty of breathtaking architecture I’d never even heard of before.
Our guide really tailored the tour to our needs, taking us to many little treasures along the way – like the Banksy painting on one of the canal walls!
Again, this is an experience that likely wouldn’t be possible unless you’re going with a local guide who really knows the city like the back of their hand.
It’s perfect for taking near the beginning of your Venice stay, so you can explore all the various little shops and fantastic eateries throughout the rest of your time there.
This is definitely one of those experiences that will show you the “backstory” of the city many don’t know about.
4. Private Tour: Venice Half-Day Walking Tour
- Departure: Calle Minelli, 4267/A, 30124 Venezia VE
- Departure Time: Between 10:00 AM & 5:00 PM
- Includes: Private Walking Tour (3 hours), Professional guide, Private tour and commentary, Appetizer and one glass of wine at a Venetian bacaro
I couldn’t believe how affordable this next tour was, especially considering that it’s 100% completely customizable!
This is one of the most affordable private tours I’ve seen in Venice, where a professional guide will lead you and your party alone throughout the places you’re most interested in!
If that sounds like fun to you, do yourself a favor and check out the Private Tour: Venice Half-Day Walking Tour !
Something else that made this tour so convenient to me was the fact that they have a whopping 5 different start times, ranging from early in the morning to later at night.
Whether you’re interested in architecture, food, Renaissance art, etc., do not doubt that these guides can whip up a fascinating tour that will show you the best of the best. I told them I was most interested in both Renaissance architecture and art, and wow, they did not disappoint!
Along the way, we stopped at a couple of locales to try traditional Venetian appetizers and a couple of glasses of local wines, too. The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari was one of the most impressive sites I’ve ever seen, and while many tourists miss it, I’d advise you not to.
Inside is just as impressive, with art like Giovanni Bellini’s ‘Madonna and Child with Saints, ‘Saint John the Baptist’ by Donatello, and ‘Assumption’ by Titian.
What was really cool is that our guide was so thorough that he even set up reservations for us to see additional experiences and try busy restaurants, with impeccable timing!
I learned so much about Venetian foods, customs, wines, and of course, the history relating back to local architecture and art. I truly can’t recommend this tour enough, no matter the age or background!
5. Private 4 hrs Venice Tour: St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Secret Venice
- Duration: 4 hours
- Includes: Professional English-speaking local guide, guarantee to skip long lines to Doge’s Palace and St. Mark’s Basilica, headset to hear guide with 9+ participants in the group
This is another private tour throughout the floating city that’ll take you through its winding canals and alleyways, uncovering little hidden gems and famous landmarks.
If you have a larger party or you’re traveling with the entire family, this is the tour I’d recommend most as it’s ideal for bigger groups.
The Private 4 hrs Venice Tour: St Mark’s Basilica, Doge’s Palace and Secret Venice has a fantastic guide to tailor the experience to your preferences to ensure a personal tour, too.
Like most tours on this guide, it starts off with you meeting your guide in the center of Venice – in this case, right outside the Royal Gardens. Our guide asked us about what we’re most interested in and designed the next 4 hours around it.
Our first stop of the day was a quick stroll over to Doge’s Palace located in St. Mark’s Square, where we were able to skip the massive queues and head straight inside!
We followed our guide throughout the different opulent rooms, decorated with gilded decor, murals, paintings, etc. from floor to ceiling!
After learning all about the Doges, we headed closeby to St. Mark’s Basilica, where we also skipped the line and headed right inside to explore the towering golden domes and marble for half an hour.
We then went to the backstreets to check out fascinating hidden gems like the imposing San Zaccaria Church, Campo Santa Maria Formosa, and “hidden Venice”.
I loved the stories our guide shared with us as we explored, further enriching what we were seeing in a way that was engaging and natural – not like audiobook tours that just repeat information you can find anywhere.
Oh, and if you’re traveling with easily distracted teens, this tour will keep them entertained with intense stories and fun guides! While the price is a bit higher than the others, it’s more than worth it!
6. Private One Day Tour in Venice!
- Duration: 8 hours
- Departure: Hotel pickup and drop-off included
- Departure Time: 10:00 AM
- Includes: Private Guide for the day, Lunch, Transfer to Murano island by private water taxi, private guided visit of an old glass factory with glassblowing demonstration, private, water taxi for the Grand Canal Boat Tour
This next tour is the most comprehensive of the bunch, and is perfect if you are only going to be in Venice for a short amount of time!
If you’re going to be in the city for only a day or two, this tour does a great job of offering insight into Venice’s history while showing you a huge amount of top sites. The Private One Day Tour in Venice starts out at 10:00 am, and you’ll be back just after dinnertime!
Instead of having to head to a meetup point and figure out how to get there, rest easy waiting in your hotel lobby for your guide to come pick you and your crew up! Our first task of the day was to explore the Cannaregio district.
It is surprisingly lacking the masses of tourists, but is brimming with history – most notably, the Jewish Ghetto filled with old synagogues, art galleries, and museums.
Next up, we visited the San Polo district, which is known as the old trade center of the city, and is where we were able to see and explore the treasures that are offered at Rialto market! I really had a fun time in Santa Croce, which is filled with all kinds of art and talented artisans!
We then crossed the Ponte di Rialto, appreciating the beautiful views and learning about its history before arriving at the Mercati di Rialto for a traditional lunch.
After fueling up on cicchetti and local wines, we made our way to the legendary San Marco square where we saw the basilica, Doge’s Palace, and Bridge of Sighs.
The only thing that was a slight “con” for me was that we had to pay extra to enter the Doge’s Palace, but it was still quite affordable and worth it.
After that, we got to see one of the oldest glass factories on Murano Island, finishing with a private water taxi ride on the gorgeous Grand Canal while sipping on a glass of Prosecco.
7. Private Guided Tour: Venice Gondola Ride Including the Grand Canal
- Duration: 1 hour
- Departure: Campiello Traghetto, 30124 Venezia VE
- Departure Time: 2:00 PM
- Includes: Private guide in English, French, German, Spanish and Italian, Private 1-hour gondola ride
If you’re looking for a tour that will easily fit into even the busiest of itineraries, this one is right up your alley!
It’s a fantastic way to see Venice from quite possibly the most “iconic” perspective: a gondola! The Private Guided Tour: Venice Gondola Ride Including the Grand Canal comes with tons of different start times throughout the day and evening, so you can surely find a time that works perfectly for you.
I feel that everyone should have the experience of riding a gondola when in Venice, down the famous Grand Canal lined with opulent palaces, impressive basilicas, and old homes that simply can’t be found anywhere else in the world.
With 5 passengers maximum per boat, this is definitely an intimate experience ideal for friends, families, couples, and even solo travelers. Meet the guide in central Venice to take off close to St. Mark’s Square, which is very easy to access from just about any hotel in the city.
The gondoliers are quite charming, themselves, though it was our guide who really made the experience so memorable and educational.
He spoke various languages but was a local, born and raised, so he knew just about everything one could know about Venice’s past and present! Taking in the gorgeous canal-side sights was something else, offering incredible opportunities for photos and videos.
As we cruised down the famous Grand Canal, he quizzed us on fun facts and trivia, while also regaling us with interesting anecdotes from his own experiences of living there.
It was so cool being on the water as we passed by all kinds of water taxis, barges, and plenty of other gondolas!
Going under the gorgeous Accademia Bridge was quite the experience, and I really enjoyed getting to go through the narrower little canals that I felt exhibited perhaps the most charming homes and wonders.
However, there’s no underestimating the grandeur of the Ca’ d’Oro palace and the Rialto Bridge, passing through centuries of history.
This is so much more than just a gondola ride – it was a great balance between a relaxing ride and an educational experience. It’s perfect for every age, too!

- April to June offer mild weather and fewer crowds compared to summer, making it a great time for enjoying the city’s beauty in a somewhat quieter setting. Winter also has its charm, especially during late morning when the mist over the canals adds a mystical touch, or at sunset when the city is illuminated by soft, golden light. These times not only enhance the atmosphere but also provide different perspectives of Venice’s iconic scenery. How many passengers can be accommodated onboard? Our fleet is designed to cater to various group sizes, ranging from romantic outings for two to small group adventures. The capacity of our boats varies, accommodating anywhere from 2 to 10 passengers. This ensures that whether you're looking for a private escape or a joyful group excursion, we have the perfect boat to meet your needs. What is the duration of a boat tour? The duration of our boat tours can vary based on the specific tour chosen and your personal preferences. Typically, tours last from one to several hours. We offer both short excursions that provide a quick glimpse of Venice's major sights and longer, more leisurely tours that allow for in-depth exploration of the area’s rich history and stunning architecture. Custom durations are also available to match your schedule and interests perfectly. What types of boats are used for the tours? Our diverse fleet includes high-speed luxury boats, elegant limousines on water, and traditional gondolas. Each type of vessel offers a different experience, from the thrill of cutting across the lagoon at speed to the romance of gliding silently across the canals in a gondola. Regardless of your choice, all our boats are maintained to the highest standards of comfort and safety, equipped with plush seating and necessary amenities to enhance your touring experience. Are boat trips safe? Safety is our top priority. All our boats are maintained regularly and piloted by experienced skippers who are well-versed in the local waterways and equipped with comprehensive safety gear. We adhere to stringent safety protocols and keep abreast of weather conditions to ensure each journey is not only enjoyable but also secure. With our meticulous attention to safety, you can relax and fully immerse yourself in the beauty of Venice. Can I book a boat tour at the last minute? While we recommend booking in advance to secure your preferred date and time, last-minute bookings can be accommodated based on availability. We strive to be as flexible as possible to meet your scheduling needs. Please contact us directly to check availability and we’ll do our best to accommodate your request. What should I bring on a Venice boat tour? For the most enjoyable experience, we recommend you bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat to protect against the sun, especially during the summer months. A camera or smartphone is a must to capture the stunning scenery. For evening tours, a light jacket may be needed as it can get cool on the water. If you have any special requirements, such as accessibility needs or dietary restrictions for tours that include refreshments, please inform us at the time of booking. Are there any age restrictions for the boat tours? Our boat tours are suitable for guests of all ages. However, for safety reasons, children must be accompanied by an adult at all times. If you’re traveling with young children, please let us know in advance so we can make the necessary arrangements to ensure their comfort and safety during the tour. What happens if the weather is bad on the day of our tour? We closely monitor weather conditions and will notify you as soon as possible if we anticipate any changes that could affect your tour. In the case of adverse weather conditions that deem it unsafe to proceed, we will offer you the option to reschedule your tour to another day or provide a full refund. My "mission" is to let travelers see and appreciate my city as if they were locals, sharing my passion and enthusiasm for my hometown with them, as only a local could do. This is why most of my tours are "off-the-beaten-path" tours, I think that to see the real side of Venice it's necessary to walk far away from the crowds and from the touristy sites and walk through charming and quiet neighborhoods, looking for the hidden corners and peaceful streets of the city, where you can still feel the authenticity and the magic of this place. I love to focus also on local traditions, habits and lifestyle today and in the past, to let you see how it feels like to be a local in Venice ! I'd like travelers to feel at home here, as if they were simply having a relaxing walk with a longtime Venetian friend!

What other guests say about our tours and locals
Perfect introduction to Venice
"Giada's food tour of Venice was the perfect way to start our visit to the city. Beyond stopping for interesting bites/drinks at a number of restaurants we never would have thought to try, Giada shared the history of the city as well as present day issues faced by residents. She encouraged adventurous eating and allowed us to sample traditional dishes that we would not have ordered on our own. We left the tour full with food, in good spirits, and with a newfound appreciation for this beautiful city. Thank you Giada!"
Fantastic tour in Venice with Adair
"We booked Adair for 3 hours tour and had a really great time. Got to hear about history of Venice, the different neighbourhoods, the people living in Venice etc etc. We got to see some beautiful places, hidden gems, charming brigdes, and of course the more known and historical sites. She has a lot of knowledge and is able to inform with charm and enthusiasm. Thank you Adair for a great tour ♥️ "
Great intro to venice
"Roko knew a lot about Venice and was great about pointing out interesting pieces of history. I took this tour my first day in Venice and it grounded me to the city. Roko was fun and picked great places to take me too"
Best Tour Guide in Venice
"Elena was amazing—our favorite tour guide by far! She was knowledgeable, incredibly nice, and such a pleasure to be around. We learned so much about Venice and its history, and the tour was a highlight of our trip. We highly recommend booking with her and would do so again if we return to Venice!"
Absolutely our favorite tour ever.
"We did a tour with Alexandra in June of 2023 and it was our favorite tour we have ever done. (completing this review now because I didn't realize it didn't go through!) Alexandra was a PHENOMENAL guide. She was so personable and pleasant to spend time with and gave us very thorough history on Venice, the foods we ate, and the vendors that we visited. The whole evening felt magical. My review sounds a bit too-good-to-be-true but it really was the most fantastic experience - this tour transformed our whole trip and made Venice even more delightful. We loved trying local foods from vendors that Alexandra knew personally and she tailored the experience to our preferences (we requested to omit alcohol from the experience). We felt like we got a "peek behind the curtain" into Venetian life and it felt very special. It was also SO appreciated that she ordered for us and helped explain the customs of the culture. We felt safe and welcomed the whole time. If/when we go back to Venice, we will definitely be scheduling another tour with her. Would recommend to everyone, every time!"
Semplicemente perfetto
"The title says it all. Time spent with Giada is an absolute delight. Her style and approach to guiding is very empathetic. Whilst relaying lots of fascinating information about every site visited, she remained conscious of what we might have seen previously, and reacts accordingly. The end result is that we were able to see and find out about locations we had not previously encountered. Next time we visit Venice we will be in touch with Giada to arrange more excellent tours for us."
"Venice is spectacular and Giada was absolutely wonderful. Her knowledge of the local culture, history and food/wine is outstanding. She was very professional, courteous, accommodating and humorous. If we are lucky enough to return one day to this unique and lovely place we would hire her again to continue our education. Thank you, Giada, for the perfect touring experience."
Truly as local as it gets.
"Elena charmed us with her infectious passion for Venice. We walked through the many different neighborhoods, listened to many different stories, sample the local cuisine, and learn the origins of words. Six hours flew by so quickly! This was truly an amazing experience, and I highly recommend her tour. "
Exceptional in every way
"Giada is a very personable and friendly guide. It quickly becomes apparent that her exceptional knowledge and enthusiasm for the traditional foods and drinks enjoyed by Venetians is boundless. Having been on previous food tours in Venice, it was delightful to be taken to so many bars that were completely new in our experience, and the tasting options were varied and most enjoyable. In between tasting stops Giada shared a variety of other fascinating insights to different aspects of Venice's history. Good company, good food and drink, and good conversation, the perfect evening."
Giada is a 10
"Giada shared her love of Venice. She was amazingly accommodating. She picked us up at the hotel and had no problem if we went into a shop along the way to take a Quick Look. Our group of four woman loved her! Thank you Giada. Ellen"

My name is Hélène Salvadori and I have been an authorized and registered tourist guide of Venice and its heritage since the 2000 after been certified by the Veneto Region. Why a guide in Venice?
A Guide in Venice means a friend in Venice. A guide in Venice means opening yourself up to lear the secrets of this ancient city from locals who live and breathe the laguna. What does the local mean to us? It means we’re in the know. As residents who live and work in the city we carry with us its complex history and rich traditions…
- Stories from Venice
- Is Venice 1600 years old? The history of Venice is somehow difficult to unravel, as in its written form this was drawn up late and in a fragmentary fashion. It is interesting to notice that the archeological excavation findings do not always chronologically correspond to the written reports. In fact, the remains prove that rich hubs were already settled on various areas of the lagoon.
Sightseeing and enjoying Venice with our walks and tours . Come and let Venice to be yours.
Planning a tour to Italy? Then you can’t miss Venice, a major destination for your tours . Today as yesterday Venice still draws visitors from every where, all of them wishing to experience its elusive dream-like ambience: it remains a city without wheels, built on rafts on wooden piles, located in the middle of a vast lagoon and still looking as it did centuries ago. Part eastern, part western, half land, half sea, Venice fits into no convenient category of place. It is bathed in mystery and wonder through the tales of countless visitors and travellers, each one adding some of his own, trying to seize the city’s indefinable nature. The millenary history of Venice then unfolds before you through an unparalleled variety of centuries-old palaces and their great array of architecture and world class fine art collections.
But how to visit and get the best of it? First you have to fit into the particular texture of the city: join in on your own or as part of a small group or party and walk around unhurriedly through the maze of waterways and alleys. Second, let a professional guide show you around the landmarks, tell you the stories of the past and bring you into the living scenes of the present. A gondola gliding on a canal, a grocery market in full swing, a bar where you’ll sip a glass of wine and taste local food, a workshop to see how expert artisans produce their traditional handcrafts and varied works. This is what you can experience with our Venice Tours; a city bustling with the joy of unexpected sights and sounds to be experienced at a walking, human and friendly pace.

All the must see sites of venice in one full day.
Join us for an exhilarating walking tour of the spectacular city of Venice . With an English-speaking guide , explore the historic sites including an extended tour of St. Mark’s Basilica . There’s no waiting with skip-the-line access . Your tour is private and comfortable.
Whether you’re in Venice for the day or for an extended stay, you’ll get a real taste of Venetian culture as you wander the alleyways and see the city’s hidden gems. In about two hours, we’ll cover the highlights of this ancient city, leaving you plenty of time to dine, explore and re-visit points of interest.
Our tour includes the following:
Ponte di Rialto and Memorable Sights
This marble beauty known the world over was quite an architectural undertaking in its day. It has become a beloved Venetian landmark, worth every penny it cost to build. Its magnificent reflection glistens in the water below, making for a stunning photograph. We’ll stop at Marco Polo’s home to learn of this son of Venice who regaled his people with tales of another world, the Far East. And, when in Venice, what better to do than people-watch in a local campo (square)? Marvel at spectacular structures and observe the locals in their daily routines.
Our tour would be incomplete without some time spent in the main square of Venice, the Piazza San Marco, or St. Mark’s Square . The basilica overlooks this marble expanse. Napoleon once called it “ the finest drawing room in all Europe .” Sit back and let the sun warm you, as an orchestral melody fills the air. From here, we’ll gaze up at the imposing Palazzo Ducale, or Doge’s Palace, where Casanova was imprisoned for his exploits. This Gothic palace was once the residence of the chief magistrate, or doge.
Optional Doge’s Palace Walking Tour
Add an in-depth exploration of this fascinating historic site to your tour of Venice. See the frescoed ceilings of Tintoretto , Viennese paintings , and a mysterious wooden slot where accusations of treason were passed to the Secret Police. See the Bridge of Sighs. Named by Lord Byron, it poetically refers to a criminal’s last view of Venice as he crossed the Rio di Palazzo to prison. You may enjoy this optional tour when our main tour concludes.

BENVENUTI A VENEZIA!
I am Silvia and, it's great connecting with you!
This is a wonderful opportunity for me to let you know how much I love my hometown and how proud I am to have had the privilege to be raised in such a unique environment. Venice is totally different from all the other places you may have ever visited in your life; people here are different! Imagine fighting daily against the elements to survive on the water. . . well this is quite a challenge! I am here to help you to understand how this was made possible more than 1600 years ago! I have always traveled in my own life and worked as an inbound operator in Venice and all over Italy for more than 15 years, both things combined are definitely a "plus" because I have a strong attitude to problem solving and great experience inside and outside the office which is not always offered by the people working in tourism. I studied at the technical Institute for Tourism in Venice and then got my graduation in foreign languages always working in the tourism business since the very beginning as a hostess doing transfers. The aspect that I love the most about my job is that I always get in touch with new people and I can customize the tours for my clients: age, mobility issues, interests. . . it is always a surprise! All my tours are customizable, we can always make arrangements and adapt the tours to your needs before you book them. I hope we can meet very soon here in Venice or in the Veneto Region which has a lot to offer: art, nature, tasty food and great wines!
