Born Enrique Martin Morales on Christmas Eve in 1971, Ricky Martin is one of the biggest Latin pop superstars in the world. He hails from San Juan, Puerto Rico and has sold over 70 million records.

Martin became a singer at age six. He would perform for his family and was encouraged to pursue music and acting. The years 1984-1989 he spent as one fifth of the Puerto Rican boy band Menudo. The experience allowed Martin to travel worldwide and further develop his performance skills. After returning home in 1989 to graduate high school, Martin was signed as a solo artist in 1990 to Sony Discos, the Latin branch of Sony Music Entertainment.

Ricky Martin’s first self-titled album came out in 1991 to much success in Latin America and the U.S. His single “Fuego Contra Fuego” was the most popular of the album, becoming certified gold in Puerto Rico and the U.S. He continued with Spanish albums throughout the early 90’s and his single “Maria” from album “A Medio Vivir” received overwhelming praise in Europe.

The World Cup in 1998 was a turning point for Martin, as his song “La Copa De La Vida” was featured during the sporting event and garnered the attention of its international viewership. His album “Vuelve” won Best Latin Pop Album at the 41st Grammy Awards and he was praised by his idols Sting and Madonna.

Ricky Martin’s streak continued with his first Spanglish album “Ricky Martin” which was released in 1999. The album has been certified platinum seven times and has sold more than 22 million copies worldwide. It peaked at #1 on the Billboard 200 in 1999 and major hit “Livin’ La Vida Loca” helped him crossover into the English-speaking music industry. It is Martin’s most popular song to date; I mean who doesn’t default to “Livin’ la Vida Loca” on karaoke night? All jokes aside, Ricky Martin’s success allowed other Latin artists to crossover into the English market such as Jennifer Lopez and Enrique Iglesias.

Martin’s first completely English album “Sound Loaded” was released in November 2000 and the hits “She Bangs” and “Nobody Wants to Be Lonely” charted at #1 on the Hot Latin Songs.

Ricky Martin cites Michael Jackson, Cher, Barbara Streisand, and Madonna as his musical influences. He also admires all genres of Latin music from salsa to merengue and looks up to Latin singers Celia Cruz and Gilberto Santa Rosa. Recently, Martin has appeared as a coach on popular reality singing show “The Voice” both in Australia and in Mexico.

Live reviews

Putting the Latin spark in pop, there’s none who do it quite like Ricky Martin. Latin music moves you and Martin makes sure that if you’re seated you’ll soon be on your feet dancing away until you can no longer feel your feet. With his natural charm and charisma oozing from every pore, thousands of women swoon at sight of his thrusting hips and body shaking through “Shake Your Bon Bon” and “She Bangs”. Suavely dressed from head to toe in white, black leather fingerless gloves on, he commands the stage whilst showing off his incredible vocal capabilities in “Vuelve” citing as his favourite song that he’s ever written. An opportunistic moment to see Martin standing still on stage, clutching the mic stand with smoke rising around his feet. You don’t need to be able to understand Spanish to really feel the sentiments attached to this song as Martin pours out his heart and soul. No matter how many performances he’s done, it feels like every show is his first with his undying gratitude as he is overwhelmed by the audience’s reception. Bringing the tempo back to maximum with trumpets completed with Latin dancers who samba across the stage for classic “Livin La Vida Loca”. With Martin’s natural flair and talent on display is no surprise why audiences are mesmerised.

I have been a fan of Ricky Martin for most of my life and seeing him in concert is always amazing!! My husband and I had tickets to his first and second shows in Puerto Rico for the Movimiento Tour. Buying the tickets through Ticketera was not a great process. I have attended several of Ricky’s previous concerts and it all went much smoother. Hard to get tickets I wanted and then tickets sold to me that were not the ones I purchased. Plus I had to purchase the first set at midnight, it was very odd. Fortunately customer service was good, but the whole buying process was not great. The first night we had VIP Hot Sound tickets. We did not get information for arrival time until the day before. A few days notice would be better. The VIP Hot Sound was amazing, better than previous years. Our seats were not great, and wish we had more control over where we sat. The second night we were a few rows back, but center and the seats were fantastic. The concert itself was wonderful and so much fun. It had a lot of the aspects of the All In show in Las Vegas. We would have attended the 3rd night but had already purchased airfare, so we could not change it. Hope Ricky tours in the states, would love to see him perform, again and again!!

Hi, we are summoned to 15:15 to enter the soundcheck, I was the first person to arrive at 15:00 hours he leaves a person of the producer giving notice that entry be delayed at 17:00 hours, I already had almost 4 hours waiting in the street, sun, without the option of a bath or to eat something.

When the person started handing out the VIP ticket "Disparo al Corazón" made another row, creating clutter of all. Then the distribution of ticket for "La Mordidita" was made. I felt that the whole process was very messy, there was no respect for the arrival time, an order never led, if not the opposite.

When we entered the ludicrously test you asked to be from the 4th row back, and people shot to the heart, in the front rows, I think it should exist a little more respect, no call VIP to a situation that VIP had no absolutely nothing, we moved from side to side, rows in the sun, and without further information from the producer. After all the chaos caused by the production company, I entered the last, being that had been there more than 5 hours, waiting to see for less than 20 minutes in a row 8, behind a whole group who had the opportunity to buy a ticket and then higher value could be with him.

Ricky Martin, an icon of the 1990s and a master of his own unique blend of pop, rock and latino is as relevant now as ever. Despite often being noted for airing on the side of novelty, his record sales would quieten the most negative of critic as he has sold over 90 million records globally.

Now a one man party onstage, he is an indescribable showman who knows how to whip his audience into frenzy with a quick swing of his hips. From the introduction to 'Será será', Martin and his army of dancers delight crowds with a mixture of latino pop and complex dance routines. Making his way around his stage set-up to jam with his tight backing band, there is a huge emphasis of fun during the show.

Plus when he brings out the A-list hits such as 'She Bangs' the cheers from the audience could violate many noise pollution laws. 'Livin' la Vida Loca' is the most nostalgic track of the night yet Ricky showcasing his vocal during 'I Am' receives even bigger applause. Martin proves through his live show that he is not only a singer but a performer in every sense of the word.

Perfect show! I saw it three times these year and it was fantastic . The only bad thing in ROSARIO was the big quantities of "persons" that enter to the show without tickets. I payed for a vip and the first places like File 4 and there the guards added chairs (10 or20) at the beginning of the show when the lights go down.I asked and the guards told me that they added because it were "new chairs" call them "agregadas" .I took photos and put it on twitter because i couldn't believe what i were sawing!!! It never happened before in a Ricky Martin show!! Only in Rosario . shamed!!!

Despite that The show and Ricky were wonderfull

It was my first time seeing Ricky Martin live and it won't be my last! It was a magnificent show, full of glamour and good music. And Ricky Martin demonstrated that he is more than a good-looking Latin singer, he's a real showman.

It's impossible to pick one single moment from the show, but I will cherish forever the one in which he talked to the audience, thanking for everything they've given him in all the years he's been coming to Argentina to offer his art. And the most intimate part of the show, in which he sang some of his most romantic hits.

I'm already looking forward to seeing his next concert!

The show was awesome, Ricky...He's always getting better and better, it's been the third time I see his concert in the same year, and it's never the same concert, he makes you feel surprised every time. Not to mention that he makes you fell in love with him over and over again. Love you, Ricky, can't be objective with him. To sum up, the concert and his shows are always the best.

Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull prove a tempting trio at tour opener

Portrait of Melissa Ruggieri

WASHINGTON – As trilogies go, the combination of Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull is a robust one.

It’s also a triad of testosterone. This Trilogy Tour kicked off Saturday at a festive, sold-out Capital One Arena in D.C.

The three Latin pop stars came equipped with their individual charisma and a heap of hits during a four-hour night that only felt like a slog during the 30-minute set changes among the acts (and no, the screaming DJ playing ear-splitting club jams in between didn’t help).

Here’s a look at how opening night of the tour – a 19-city run that will traverse the country until wrapping in Vancouver in December – unfolded.

More: Peso Pluma talks shaking up music, already having a legacy at 24: 'This is global'

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

What is the order of performers on The Trilogy Tour?

All three artists are technically co-headliners — or perhaps co-co-headliners is more fitting — with each playing hour-long sets of 13-15 songs.

Pitbull is on deck first – at 7:35 this night, after doors opened late and sound checks were still unfolding as fans headed to their seats.

Iglesias follows, with Martin closing the night of bilingual music. Each performer offers their own specialized barrage of lasers, rotating lights and pyro; their distinct personalities and style of showmanship are adeptly spotlighted.

While this is the first time these three artists have shared a bill, they are not unfamiliar tour partners. In 2017, Iglesias paired with Pitbull, while in 2021, the son of Latin megastar Julio Iglesias teamed with Martin for a shared jaunt that also included a fledgling Sebastián Yatra.

Pitbull’s set is slick and brimming with positivity

The Cuban rapper, singer and businessman from Miami burst onstage looking cool and sharp in a black suit and shades, surrounded by six shapely female dancers and a sextet of musicians.

His roof-raiser “Don’t Stop the Party” served as an appropriate opener as he blanketed the air with a South Beach vibe and a trove of neon lights.

“Hotel Room Service” prompted a chorus shout-along from the crowd, while the man known affectionately as Mr. Worldwide and Mr. 305 and legally as Armando Christian Pérez engaged in relentless aerobics, working out his arms as much as his pelvis.

There is nothing particularly innovative about Pitbull’s mélange of Latin-flecked pop-rap. Still, his boundless energy and positive outlook on life – the words “kindness,” “love,” “honesty” and “success” flipped across the v ideo screen during “Time Of Our Lives” – is admirable.

“If someone is being negative to you, it means they want to be you,” he said, while later talking about the Sports Leadership and Management charter school – with free tuition – he opened in Miami in 2013.

Though Pitbull, 42, released the new album “Trackhouse” earlier this month, his giddy set mostly focused on his adrenalized hits with only the Lil Jon collaboration “Jumpin’” representing a current offering.

Pitbull donned a red jacket for “Gasolina,” his pairing with Daddy Yankee – shown on video - and popped on a glamorous cowboy hat to accompany his decade-old No. 1 smash with Kesha , “Timber.”

Before the zingy “Fireball,” Pitbull addressed the crowd in English and Spanish, patting his chest and smiling in gratitude.

Enrique Iglesias jokes – maybe – that this is his last tour

Emerging from a halo of haze and lasers, the slender Iglesias dove into “Tonight (I’m Loving You),” alternating its chorus with the more profane version of the song as he zipped down the catwalk, his seven band members and two backup singers providing musical heft.

Clad in his usual uniform of sleeves-rolled-up work shirt, trucker hat and slouchy zippered pants, Iglesias poured his sultry voice over "Duele el Corazón" – hand raised in a swimming motion as he bathed in the rhythm – and the gliding “Bailamos,” his first crossover hit from 1999.

Percussionist Gilmar Gomes quickly proved the MVP of the band, as apt to stand atop his setup and provide a midsong rap as he was to smack his congas.

Gomes joined Iglesias and some of his other band members at a B-stage at the back of the arena – where Iglesias would return toward the end of his set as well –  for the seductive “Cuando Me Enamoro” paired with “Loco” and “Me Pasé,” that lilting ache in Iglesias’ voice such a hallmark of his ballads.

“This might be the last tour for me. (I'm) getting old,” Iglesias, 48, said, possibly kidding. He also mentioned in 2021 that his “Final, Vol. 1” album might be his last, but a “Final Vol. 2” is due soon.

Back on the main stage, Iglesias alternated between standing on the railing of the two raised platforms on opposite edges of the stage and crouching to get closer to fans during “Escape,” which dovetailed into the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This”), a thundering combination of drums, colored lasers and frenetic lights.

Though the whispery “Hero” – a phones in the air moment, of course – slowed the heartbeat of the set, Iglesias ended with a celebratory rendition of his massive 2014 hit, “Bailando,” accompanied by balloons adorned with his initials dropped from the ceiling and lively vocal supplement from the crowd.

Ricky Martin adeptly showcases sex and swagger

Always a vigorous showman , Martin unleashed his sonorous voice on the opening "Pégate" and his elaborate choreography with his seven dancers – male and female – on the fizzy "María" with unfettered glee.

Primal percussion bolstered the booming sound from his nine-piece band, including a snappy trio of brass players, as Martin, in baggy black pants and a sheer black shirt that would soon be stripped down to a sweaty gray tank top, slithered around the stage.

His hips were on auto-swivel during a feverish, horn-infused “Shake Your Bon-Bon” featuring Martin brandishing his tattooed biceps, while the still goofily fun “She Bangs” found him encircled by his dancers as he romped through the song, full of sex and swagger.

Martin, 51, knows how to sell a ballad as effortlessly as he moves and his eyes-scrunched-closed renditions of “Tu Recuerdo,” accompanied by lovely acoustic guitar, and “Vuelve,” were impassioned drama.

As the stage glowed “Wicked” green, three of his dancers presented an intricate number using their flowing skirts as props before Martin appeared, swaying his arms in the air throughout “Por Arriba, Por Abajo” and emphasizing lyrics with a graceful body swoop or furrowed brow.

Of course, Martin will never escape the worldwide recognition that comes with the opening horn bleats of “Livin’ La Vida Loca,” and his fun, fiery rendition of his 1999 English breakthrough smash fulfilled every hope.

Review: Pitbull, Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias bring the heat: A night with three kings on the Trilogy tour

A man sings on a stage while holding a microphone.

Partying was the only option on Thursday night at Crypto.com Arena. Every person in the fully packed stadium knew what they were getting into on night one of the Trilogy tour, which brought Latin crossover titans Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias and Pitbull to the downtown L.A. stage for two nights of base-throbbing, fist-pumping raging.

The Trilogy tour is not a hard sell. With a combined 77,116,452 monthly listeners on Spotify, five Grammys, 10 Latin Grammys and a level 5 billion on the heartthrob heat scale, the three acts comprising the tour could, and have , done gangbusters individually and on dual headlining tours. So much so that the tour has mostly sold out across the U.S., leading to a second leg starting up in 2024.

Large crowds attended the Besame Mucho 2023 event at Dodger Stadium on Saturday, Dec. 2, 2023.

The 10 best things we saw at Bésame Mucho

With four stages representing the past and present of Latin music, here are some of our favorite sets from the one-day festival at Dodger Stadium.

Dec. 4, 2023

Even with a rotating lineup, the show is relentlessly raucous, never letting up on the multi-generational crowd that ranged from elementary-aged kids to doñas draped in rebozos. Delia Martín, a 63-year-old from Westchester, was there with four family members, excited for the lineup. “All of them have their individual gifts,” she said.

For Gio Chavez, a 45-year-old sales manager from Riverside, it was his daughter who brought him there. “She’s like, ‘Dad, we have to come to this show,’ and here I am, full board,” said Chavez, gesturing to the large sheet brandishing Pitbull’s face surrounded by hearts that he was wearing as a cape.

A man and woman perform on stage.

On Thursday, Boricua icon Ricky Martin kicked things off, powering full-heartedly through hits like “Maria,” “She Bangs” and “Vuelve,” which produced such a yearning scream that hundreds of exes out in the universe must have felt a sudden heat in their chest.

It’s no shock that Martin, who joined the Latin boy band Menudo at age 12, commands the stage and crowd with an ease and electricity that feels marrow-deep — an integral muscle of his very self. Despite a year embroiled in several lawsuits over sexual assault allegations, Martin was as vigorous as ever.

His set rocketed me back in time to the Latin Explosion of the late ‘90s and early aughts. And how could it not as Martin performed “The Cup of Life,” the World Cup anthem that launched a boom in Latin crossover music after the singer’s famously culture-shifting Grammy’s performance in 1999. And you’d think after hearing “Livin’ la Vida Loca” no less than 10,000 times in the summer of ‘99 it wouldn’t hit as hard, but you’d be wrong. It’s easy to see how Martin’s stage presence and talent sent the music industry into a tizzy that still resonates to this day.

Emily Tosta and Angel Gracia at Lionsgate in Santa Monica on Thursday, November 30, 2023.

‘How the Gringo Stole Christmas’ brings a classic movie trope to East L.A.

A new twist on meeting your partner’s family has arrived this holiday season in ‘How the Gringo Stole Christmas,’ directed by Angel Gracia and starring George Lopez.

The sensuality and vibrance of Martin’s set turned out to be a primer for the all-out visual and sonic freakout that drenched every corner of the Crypto in “dale’s.” I counted 23 “dale’s” during Pitbull’s balls-to-the-wall set, which also included his bangers “Timber,” “I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)” and “Hotel Room Service.” Thankfully, his fans came prepared to party with Mr. Worldwide — some more than others.

“Bro, I’m about to mess this concert up. I’m about to go on the stage and be Pitbull,” said Sophia Ruiz, a 19-year-old veterinary student who works at her family bakery, Chelo’s Panaderia in Huntington Beach. She, along with two friends, came dressed as Pitbull, nude skull caps and drawn-on goatees.

“I think everyone, if they like Pitbull, they’re also Pitbull. We are one,” she said.

A man in a black suit and shades sings while surrounded by three dancers in black and white checkered outfits.

“We have met other Pitbulls tonight, and immediately felt like family,” said Samantha Valdez, a nursing student also dressed as Pitbull. “It doesn’t matter where you come from. If you love Pitbull you have an instant connection with that person.”

In total, I met seven Pitbullinas. The Miami-born singer, entrepreneur and education ambassador has a remarkable hold over his fans, one that elicits veneration. After his set, I fully understood why. He has molded himself into a mix of megachurch pastor and motivational speaker, rapping about taking shots and scoring hotties, while taking moments to speak to his disciples about his commitment to education and following your dreams.

“There was a moment, we looked at each other, we’re dressed like him right now, and we said, ‘Are we in a cult?’ ” said Carly Kaplan, a 29-year-old social media specialist also fully decked out as Pitbull along with her friend, Tarreyn Van Slyke, also a social media specialist.

“There’s moments where it’s like a positivity conference or something, like a self-help seminar,” Van Slyke told me. “He’s a showman. He clearly loves what he’s doing. He gave the people what they wanted.”

A man holds out his arms in front of shafts of light on stage.

Closing out the rollicking affair was Enrique Iglesias, who felt subdued in comparison to his co-headliners but only because he had no backup dancers, choreography or outfit changes, whereas his tour mates had an abundance of all three. Even so, the crowd was with him, screaming along to “Bailamos,” “I Like It,” “Escape” and “Súbeme la radio.”

It’s proof you don’t need a lot of frills to get the crowd going, which was true about 27 years ago when I saw Iglesias in concert at the San Diego Sports Arena for my very first concert. It was the first time I’ve ever seen girls completely lose their mind over a guy in a basic white tee rasping melodically about experiencias religiosas, and I’ve never forgotten it.

Across two stages — a larger one and a smaller, warmly lighted one closer to the back of the arena — he moved through the crowd to cover as much arena space as physically possible, finding rails to climb and shaking hands with fans as he sang.

“He brought the crowd up,” said Martín of Iglesias’ set, which she called her favorite.

A man in a black outfit sings while two women in checkered outfits dance.

Videos of Iglesias humping the stage on this tour have been making the rounds on TikTok, but sadly, this stop was only treated to a bit of air thrusting. There were, however, some incredibly intimate duets with his backup singer, enough to raise my eyebrow at the heat it radiated.

“L.A., this is my wife on stage,” Iglesias told the crowd following a performance where he sang on bended knee into her lap and another where they slow-danced tightly, crooning out of the nape of each other’s neck.

The Trilogy tour, in all, was a dizzying, unstoppable force, a celebration of three Latin icons who are hell-bent on getting your hips moving and your throat hoarse from screaming. And bless them for that.

A man in a black outfit holds his arms out while shafts of light are in the background.

Far from a nostalgia tour (though there were certainly moments of wistfulness), the Trilogy tour was a perfect reminder that decades into life and career, these guys are far from done.
