The Glide Sasquatch Festival is a summer fest celebration of all things Bigfoot and good times. The first Sasquatch Festival roared to life in 2022 with a turnout of more than 2,500 people in attendance. This event was such a success it has been deemed a new tradition for the Glide community. In 2023 the  summer festival hosted over 4000 attendees, 6 musical acts, over 60 vendors, and two esteemed Bigfoot Experts. Glide Revitalization is mostly known for their work to help the Archie Creek Fire Survivors recover with over $1 million in financial assistance to date.

Unlocking the Mystery: Exploring Bigfoot on the Oregon Coast

The Oregon Coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world. It is home to stunning beaches, rugged cliffs, and picturesque seaside towns. But it is also known for something else – Bigfoot. Yes, you heard it right. 

Bigfoot, the legendary creature that has been a subject of fascination for generations, is said to roam the forests and mountains of the Oregon Coast.

For those who are not familiar with Bigfoot, it is a creature that is said to be humanoid, covered in hair, and standing anywhere from 6 to 10 feet tall. It is also known as Sasquatch and is believed to be an ape-like creature that lives in the wilderness of North America. 

While there is no concrete evidence to prove the existence of Bigfoot, there are numerous sightings, footprints, and other pieces of evidence that suggest its presence.

Bigfoot on the Oregon Coast

The Oregon Coast is a popular destination for Bigfoot enthusiasts who come from all over the world to explore the forests and mountains in search of this elusive creature. Some of the best places to look for Bigfoot on the Oregon Coast include the Siskiyou National Forest, the Tillamook State Forest, and the Rogue River-Siskiyou National Forest.

Siskiyou National Forest

The Siskiyou National Forest , located in southwestern Oregon, is known for its dense forests, steep mountains, and rugged terrain. It is also home to numerous Bigfoot sightings, with many witnesses reporting seeing large footprints and hearing strange noises in the forest.

Tillamook State Forest

The Tillamook State Forest , located in northwestern Oregon, is another popular spot for Bigfoot sightings. It is a vast forested area that covers more than 360,000 acres and is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elk, deer, and black bears. 

The forest is also known for its numerous hiking trails, which provide ample opportunities for Bigfoot enthusiasts to explore the wilderness.

Many of the areas known for their Bigfoot activity are accessible by hiking trails, and there are plenty of opportunities for camping and other outdoor activities along the way.

Another option is to join a guided tour or expedition. These tours are often led by experienced Bigfoot researchers and enthusiasts who know the area well and can help you navigate the wilderness while providing insights into the history and lore of Sasquatch.

Bigfoot Myths and  Legends

While Bigfoot sightings are still largely anecdotal and unproven, they have been a part of the lore and culture of the Pacific Northwest for decades. In fact, many Native American tribes in the region have their own legends and stories about Sasquatch, some of which date back centuries.

Here are a few legends of Bigfoot:

• The Skookum : According to the Chinook people of the Pacific Northwest, the Skookum is a malevolent spirit that inhabits the wilderness and can shape-shift into various forms, including that of a Bigfoot-like creature. The Skookum is said to be responsible for stealing children and causing mischief in the forest.
• The Stick Indians : The Klamath people of southern Oregon and northern California have their own legends of Bigfoot-like creatures, known as the Stick Indians. According to these stories, the Stick Indians are a tribe of forest-dwelling creatures that live in villages deep in the woods. They are said to be very tall and have long arms and legs, and are often associated with mischievous behavior.
• The Wildman of the Woods : In the early 20th century, a man named J.W. Burns collected numerous stories and legends from First Nations people in the Harrison Hot Springs area of British Columbia, Canada. These stories included tales of a wild man known as the Wildman of the Woods, who was said to be covered in hair and lived in the mountains. The Wildman was often associated with a sense of mystery and danger, and was said to be capable of supernatural feats.
• The Hairy Man : The Lummi people of the Pacific Northwest have their own legend of a Bigfoot-like creature known as the Hairy Man. According to these stories, the Hairy Man is a large, hairy creature that lives in the forest and is often associated with the spirit world. The Hairy Man is said to be a powerful and sometimes dangerous being, and is sometimes invoked in traditional Lummi healing ceremonies.
• The Giant of the Woods : According to some legends, Bigfoot is not a solitary creature, but rather part of a larger tribe of beings known as the Giants of the Woods. These beings are said to be large, powerful creatures with incredible strength and the ability to communicate telepathically. They are often associated with a sense of mystery and wonder, and are sometimes viewed as guardians of the natural world.
• The Coos Monster : The Coos Monster is a legendary creature that is said to inhabit the forests of the southern Oregon Coast. According to legend, the Coos Monster is a large, hairy creature that walks on two legs and has been known to attack livestock and scare off hunters.
• The Devil's Footprint : The Devil's Footprint is a natural feature on the coast of Oregon that is said to have been created by a giant creature, possibly a Bigfoot. The footprint is said to be over 5 feet long and 2 feet wide, and is located near a sea cave in the town of Cape Blanco.
• The Rogue River Bigfoot : The Rogue River area of southern Oregon is known for its Bigfoot sightings, with many witnesses reporting seeing large, hairy creatures in the area. Some of these sightings have been particularly vivid, with witnesses reporting seeing the creatures up close and even making eye contact with them.
• The Siletz Screamer : The Siletz Screamer is a legendary creature said to inhabit the Siletz River area of the Oregon Coast. According to legend, the creature emits a loud, piercing scream that can be heard from miles away. Some believe the Siletz Screamer is a Bigfoot-like creature, while others speculate that it could be a type of undiscovered bird or animal.
• The Van Duzer Corridor : The Van Duzer Corridor is a stretch of Highway 18 on the Oregon Coast that is said to be a Bigfoot hotspot. Many witnesses have reported seeing large, hairy creatures crossing the road or wandering through the nearby forests. Some even claim to have seen entire Bigfoot families in the area.
• The Nestucca Incident : The Nestucca Incident is a famous Bigfoot sighting that took place in the Nestucca Valley of the Oregon Coast in 1961. According to the witnesses, a group of loggers encountered a large, hairy creature that they described as looking like an “ape-man”. The incident gained national attention and sparked renewed interest in the search for Bigfoot.

Scientists, Researches, and Enthusiasts

Despite the lack of concrete evidence, the study of Bigfoot has attracted the attention of scientists, researchers, and enthusiasts alike. Some have attempted to use DNA analysis, footprint analysis, and even aerial surveys to try and find evidence of the creature's existence.

DNA Analysis 

In recent years, advances in technology and genetics have opened up new avenues for Bigfoot research. Scientists and researchers are using DNA analysis to try and determine whether hair samples and other biological evidence found in the wild could be linked to Bigfoot. Some researchers are also using drones and other technology to search for signs of the creature from above.

Bigfoot Encounters

Many Bigfoot enthusiasts also claim to have had their own encounters with the creature while hiking or camping in the wilderness. Some report hearing strange noises in the forest, while others claim to have seen the creature itself. These experiences have only added to the allure and mystery surrounding Bigfoot.

• The Blue Creek Mountain Encounter : In 2005, a group of hikers near Blue Creek Mountain in the Oregon Coast Range reported seeing a large, bipedal creature covered in hair. The hikers described the creature as standing at least 7 feet tall and estimated its weight to be around 500 pounds.
• The Siuslaw National Forest Encounter : In 2013, a man reported encountering a Bigfoot in the Siuslaw National Forest on the Oregon Coast. The man claimed that the creature was standing on two legs and appeared to be watching him from behind a tree. He described the creature as being over 8 feet tall and covered in dark brown hair.
• The Tillamook Forest Encounter : In 1981, a group of loggers in the Tillamook Forest on the Oregon Coast reported seeing a large, hairy creature that they described as looking like an “ape-man”. The loggers claimed that the creature walked on two legs and was covered in hair from head to toe. The incident gained national attention and sparked renewed interest in the search for Bigfoot.
• The Waldport Sighting : In 2020, a man reported seeing a Bigfoot near Waldport on the Oregon Coast. The man claimed that the creature was over 8 feet tall and covered in hair. He described the creature as walking on two legs and appearing to be observing him from a distance before disappearing into the nearby woods.
• The Sixes River Encounter : In 2017, a group of campers near the Sixes River on the Oregon Coast reported hearing strange vocalizations outside their tent at night. When they investigated, they claimed to have seen a large, hairy creature walking through the woods. The campers described the creature as standing at least 7 feet tall and appearing to be covered in dark hair.
• The Port Orford Encounter : In 2015, a woman reported seeing a Bigfoot near Port Orford on the Oregon Coast. The woman claimed that the creature was over 7 feet tall and covered in hair. She described the creature as standing on two legs and appearing to be observing her from a distance before disappearing into the nearby woods.

In addition to its natural beauty and Bigfoot lore, the Oregon Coast is also home to several ways of celebrating Bigfoot. Here are just a few:  

Sasquatch Summit

While this event takes place in Washington state, it is still within driving distance of the Oregon Coast. The Sasquatch Summit is held annually in the town of Ocean Shores, Washington, and includes lectures and presentations by Bigfoot researchers, as well as opportunities for attendees to share their own Bigfoot experiences and sightings.

The Bigfoot Discovery Project

The Bigfoot Discovery Project is located in the town of Boring, Oregon, and includes a museum and gift shop dedicated to Bigfoot, as well as guided tours of nearby Bigfoot sighting locations. The project also offers overnight expeditions for those looking for a more immersive Bigfoot experience.

North American Bigfoot Center

One such museum is the North American Bigfoot Center , located in Boring, Oregon. The museum features exhibits on Bigfoot sightings, research, and theories, as well as a collection of Bigfoot-related artifacts and memorabilia.

The Waterfall Loop

This loop is for those folks looking to take their time in the Gorge. You will have the opportunity to visit and photograph 6 different locations on this trip. The loop takes approximately 2.5 hours to complete if you are not planning to hike. This tour has audio narration to provide historical information about the go

The waterfall loop shuttles have limited seating and can sel, how does this loop work.

The bus leaves our lot in Bridal Veil and heads west passing the Angels Rest Trailhead. It continues past upper Bridal Veil State Park and along the Historic Columbia River Highway. You will pass Sheppards Dell and if you look to the south side of the road you will see a small waterfall. The bus will then stop at Latourell Falls and give you 15min to take a small walk to see the waterfall and take pictures. The bus will then take you up the hill through a thick canopy to Crown Point State Park/Vista House. Here you can get off and take in the views and building for 15min. After the bus picks you up at Crown Point it will take you all the way to Horsetail Falls. You will pass many waterfalls along the way, both named and unnamed. At Horsetail you will get 10min to view and take pictures before the bus is back to pick you up and take you Multnomah Falls. At Multnomah Falls you can get off and enjoy the amenities including snack bar, coffee stand, restaurant and gift shop. Take your time here because our express comes approximately every 30 minutes. The Multnomah Express or the next Waterfall Loop bus can take you back to our parking lot. Give yourself about 2.5 hrs to complete this loop.

Vista house, latourell falls.

Since 1918, this regal sight has enthralled millions of travelers. From its surrounding vantage point 733 feet above the Columbia River and countless sightseers and photographers have enjoyed a step back in time and one of Oregon’s most inspiring views.

Visitors can take a short walk underneath an historic 1914 bridge to the base of Lower Latourell Falls, a 224-foot plunge over columnar basalt splashed with chartreuse-colored lichen

Multnomah falls.

One of stops along the famed waterfall area on the Historic Highway, it connnects with a network of trails that make for great day hike loop opportunities, and world-class scenery. The 242-foot falls is a tiered type of waterfall, named after the Yakama word for "most beautiful".

Multnomah Falls is the most visited natural recreation site in the Pacific Northwest with more than 2 million stopping by each year to take in the views. Fed by underground springs from Larch Mountain, the flow over the falls varies, but is usually highest during winter and spring.

Named for its characteristic form, Horsetail Falls plunges 176 feet within view of the Historic Columbia River Highway's "Waterfall Corridor."

The falls duck under the Old Columbia River Gorge Highway's 1914 bridge and over mossy basalt in two tiers, a drop of about 120 feet altogether.  Watch for several signs of the property’s mill days: a dike and human-made creek, remnants of old buildings and a corrugated iron shed, the last remaining structure.

Eight Places to Find Bigfoot in the Portland Area

There’s no denying the mythic cryptid’s presence in Portland

His footprint is huge. His cultural footprint is bigger.

Whether or not you believe Bigfoot is plodding around the forests near Mount Hood, there's no denying the mythic cryptid's presence in Portland and the surrounding areas. Its famous silhouette—hunched, arms swaying, primitive gait—adorns company logos, 2020 campaign stickers and countless dad tees.

WW compiled some of the more notable places to find the big guy in and around the Rose City. That way, when he finally comes down from the hills, you'll know where to take him to get some clothes, take some photos and grab a beer.

The Freakybuttrue Pecularium and Museum

Though this Ripley's Believe or Not! sendup in Northwest Portland is filled with oddities like fake worm cookies, old-timey portraits of bugmen and an enlarged eyeball topped with a fez, its mascot is the 9-foot-tall homemade Bigfoot statue towering over the entrance. Owner Mike Wellins, a former Laika animator, crafted the Sasquatch with metal framing, lots of fabric and stuffing, and two cement blocks for feet. The Peculiarium also sells many Bigfoot-inspired prints, also created by Wellins, depicting him gazing at a cabin holding a gas can and a torch, flipping the bird, and wreaking havoc on Mount Hood with a hunting knife and machine gun, Rambo-style.

Southwest 136th Avenue and Division Street

Bigfoot's larger-than-life stature is put on full, colorful display under the footbridge at the intersection of 136th and Division. Late last year, artist Rodolfo Redstone Serna painted the two-story mural with the help of nearby Bridger School, David Douglas High School and Portland passersby who were encouraged to grab a brush and paint a stroke. In this depiction, he's got a chiseled, purple body and blue and orange fur, a medallion around his neck and a Native American man on his shoulder. He's rightfully the centerpiece in a mural that also features unicorns, pyramids and rainbows.

Camp 18 Restaurant

This log cabin restaurant, located about 60 miles northwest of Portland on Highway 26, looks like a place a 'squatch would dine on slow Sunday afternoons. He's well-represented there: two giant, chain saw-carved wooden statues stand outside, one looking mean, the other a friendly, Harry and the Hendersons type. In the gift shop, there are Sasquatch-themed shirts, mugs, and stuffed animals, plus small vials of "Bigfoot hair." And if that sparks your taste buds for whatever reason, you can purchase a small mound of chocolate, dubbed "Bigfoot Poop," to indulge in.

Surprisingly, you won't find any depiction of Sasquatch beside a footprint or two at either of the taprooms bearing his name. That's because Tom Sims, owner of the brewery, doesn't concern himself with pointless realisms—Bigfoot is better celebrated as an idea suspended between fantasy and reality. He likens the concept of Sasquatch to Portland itself: stowed away in the woods, doing its own thing, charmingly weird and mystical. What would Bigfoot want to drink if he walked into the taproom from nearby Forest Park? "He'd probably ask for some royalties," Sims says.

Little Bay Root

The spirit of the Pacific Northwest runs through this Portland-based company's line of apparel, glassware, tote bags and more, with Bigfoot showing up among its top sellers. Its Squatch Out line—researcher jargon for when expeditioners notice something that could lead them to the man-ape—is what the company is known for, but that's just the tip of the hairy iceberg. It has a line of Bigfoot air fresheners, but instead of a musty, wet-hair smell, it's a pine scent reminiscent of the aroma of vast Oregon forests. Also flying off the shelf is a 2020 Bigfoot campaign sticker and T-shirt. "Amidst all of the political news that you see on a daily basis now," says assistant art director Brenden Debozy, "whether it be negative or anything, it's refreshing."

At community markets around Portland, artist Rebecca Schnabel asks you to look deeper. All of her Multnomah Falls and Columbia River Gorge landscape photos include one of them pesky 'squatches somewhere behind the swell of damp trees. Her version of Where's Waldo? is made using digital trickery and superimposition—but she keeps the details a secret. It's the beholder's search for Bigfoot in her photos that motivates her art, and her closeness with God. "I feel like [the search] is how my faith is represented," Schnabel says. "And I use Bigfoot as kind of my analogy for my faith." She also sells "Even Sasquatch Needs His Coffee" T-shirts, so there you go.

Bigfoot Lacrosse

Unfortunately, Bigfoot Lacrosse is just the name of this Tualatin athletic gear retailer, so you won't find any hairy ape-men on its helmets, gloves, shafts or heads. But its heart is in the right place, especially considering the tale its website offers to explain the namesake of the company—it involves magic mushrooms and spiritual Sasquatch telepathy. If anything, Bigfoot Lacrosse is steeped in Oregon pride, and that's enough to justify appropriating the name of our true state animal.

Oregon State Fire Marshal's Believe in Fire Safety Campaign

Only you can prevent forest fires—but if Smokey Bear can't convince you, maybe his much bigger, hairier friend will. The Oregon Fire Marshal is invoking the image of Bigfoot on posters and billboards, showing our woodland friend safely putting out bonfires, hiking near Mount Hood, doing some fly fishing, even riding an ATV—stay on designated paths, people. The  agency also has printable coloring pages and connect-the-dots puzzles on its website. Bigfoot is kind of a spiritual liaison between wildlife and humans, and as any 'squatch enthusiast will tell you, caring for Bigfoot is caring for the environment.
