Taylor Swift announces Eras Tour concert film heading to theaters in October

She comes back stronger than a '90s trend.

taylor swift eras tour movie in theaters

Taylor Swift is headed to a movie theater near you.

For those who didn't manage to snag tickets to the singer's massive Eras Tour (or for those who want to experience it again), Swift revealed today that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film is heading to AMC and other theaters starting Oct. 13 (because of course it is). Every AMC location in the U.S. will run at least four showtimes per day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays.

Pricing for the tickets will look familiar to her fans: All adult tickets will be priced at $19.89 plus tax, and children and senior tickets will be $13.13 plus tax, for all showtimes except branded premium large format screens. (The concert film will also be available in IMAX at AMC, Dolby Cinema at AMC, and other premium large formats for their standard up-charge fee, which varies by format and theater.)

Stateside Swifties aren't the only ones who will get a chance to see the movie, however. In addition to exhibiting the concert film at its own theaters, AMC is also acting as the theatrical distributor, meaning it is securing locations and screens with numerous other movie theater operators throughout the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to screen it.

According to a release, AMC already has secured deals with major theatrical exhibitors such as Cinemark and Harkins in the U.S., Cineplex in Canada, and Cinepolis in Mexico to show Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour . The release states "AMC expects that numerous other movie theater operators will show this concert film experience in their theaters beginning October 13," so fans should be on the lookout for more showtimes in the coming weeks.

Tickets are on sale now at AMCTheatres.com and Fandango.com . Check out the trailer for the concert film above.

Taylor Swift ‘The Eras Tour’ concert film: Everything you need to know

For all the fans who couldn’t snag a ticket to one of Taylor Swift’s stops on her sold-out “ Eras Tour ,” your time has come: It’s coming to the big screen for some people even sooner !

The singer shared on social media Oct. 11 that due to high demand, early access showings of “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour” will be available in the United States and Canada one day before its official release on Oct. 13.

AMC announced in September that in addition to the film's North American release in nearly 4,000 movie theaters in October, the film will play in 100 countries starting Oct. 13.

“The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon,” Swift wrote on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Aug. 31 for the film's North American announcement.

“Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged,” she added.

AMC said in a press release it took less than 24 hours for Swift's concert film to "shatter AMC’s U.S. record for the highest ticket-sales revenue during a single day in AMC’s 103-year history."

"With such overwhelming demand being evident, it became obvious that there should be an immediate worldwide release of the film," the company said.

Recently, Swift cited "unprecedented demand" as the reason she's adding additional showtimes before the film is even released .

“I can’t really wrap my head around this but…. Look what you genuinely made me do: Due to unprecedented demand we’re opening up early access showings of The Eras Tour Concert Film on THURSDAY in America and Canada!! As in… TOMORROW. We’re also adding additional showtimes Friday and throughout the weekend,” she said in her Instagram post .

“I can’t thank you enough for wanting to see this film that so vividly captures my favorite adventure I’ve ever been a part of: The Eras Tour. And the best part is, it’s an adventure we’re still on together,” she continued.

Here’s what to know about the “Eras Tour” concert film .

The 'Eras Tour' film release date

The “Eras Tour” concert film will be a filmed version of “Eras Tour” performances from three of the singer's shows in Los Angeles , which took place Aug. 3-5.

The concert film will premiere in most countries at 6 p.m. local time, according to AMC .

Not wanting to go up against Swifties, shortly after the release date was confirmed, “The Exorcist: The Believer” announced it was changing its release date, which was originally Oct. 13.

Founder of Blumhouse, Jason Blum, who is distributing the film alongside Universal and Morgan Creek, tweeted: “Look what you made me do. The Exorcist: Believer moves to 10/6/23.”

He included the hashtag: “#TaylorWins.”

By Sept. 1, Swift had once again disrupted yet another film’s release. Meg Ryan’s movie “What Happens Later” will now be released Nov. 3, instead of Oct. 13, Bleeker Street, the company distributing the rom-com announced.

“So we’ll take our time...Are you ready for it? Meg Ryan ends her 14-year rom-com hiatus and the #Megaissance begins with #WhatHappensLater, now happening...later. Coming only to theaters November 3!” the company tweeted.

The 'Eras Tour' concert film running time

The “Eras Tour” concert film has a running time of 2 hours and 48 minutes, according to AMC Theatres . The live show runs over three hours, so it looks like the film version will be slightly condensed.

Where to watch the 'Eras Tour' concert film

Starting Oct. 13, the “Eras Tour” concert film will be showing in theaters across the U.S., including AMC, Cinemark and Regal. Swift also announced due to high demand, there will be early access showings Oct. 12 in Canada and the United States.

Every AMC location in the country will offer at least four showtimes a day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, AMC said in a release.

AMC is also distributing the film to other theaters across North America and has deals with major theatrical exhibitors like Cineplex in Canada and Cinepolis in Mexico to show the concert film.

In Europe, the concert film will play in every ODEON Cinemas location, according to AMC.

"Additionally, AMC and its sub-distribution partners are taking steps to reach agreements with additional cinema operators throughout the world to play this spectacular Taylor Swift tour-de-force," the company said in a previous press release.

How to get tickets for the 'Eras Tour' concert film

According to a link shared by Swift on X , fans can purchase tickets for the “Eras Tour” concert film in the U.S. via AMC, Regal, Cinemark or Fandango.

In an effort to deal with the expected overwhelming demand for tickets — and no doubt to avoid the ticketing issues that have plagued the booking process for live shows — AMC introduced a queuing system to access its website.

“Thank you for your patience as we experience high traffic volume,” a previous message read on AMC’s website when first accessed. “We have proactively created this queue for all visitors. When it is your turn, you will have 10 minutes to begin your TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film ticket purchase or other online visit.”

AMC said in a release that it upgraded its website and ticketing system to cope with a high volume of ticket sales. But the chain also noted that “no ticketing system in history seems to have been able to accommodate the soaring demand from Taylor Swift fans when tickets are first placed on sale.”

AMC warned that people booking tickets online may experience delays, wait times and outages.

AMC noted on its ticket-booking page that tickets are nonrefundable and that "no passes, exchange tickets, or discount tickets may be used."

For those outside of North America, tickets went on sale for most participating locations Sept. 26, according to AMC.

Ticket prices for the 'Eras Tour' concert film

Adult tickets for the “Eras Tour” concert film at AMC Theatres in the U.S. will be priced at $19.89 plus tax, in a playful reference to Swift’s fifth (and soon-to-be-re-released) studio album, “1989.”

Children’s and senior tickets are $13.13 plus tax, a wink at Swift’s famous lucky number of 13.

Some showings at IMAX at AMC, Dolby Cinema at AMC and “other premium large formats” may have a higher ticket price, which varies by format and theater.

For international Swifties , ticket prices will vary by country, according to AMC.

Will the 'Eras Tour' concert film be available to stream?

As of now, the “Eras Tour” concert film is available only in movie theaters. Swift has not indicated whether there are plans to release the film on streaming platforms.

Is the live 'Eras Tour' still happening?

“The Eras Tour,” which kicked off in March 2023 , is still in full swing. After wrapping up her initial run of shows in North America, Swift is set to begin the international leg of the tour this November with shows across South America, Asia, Australia and Europe through August 2024.

She also added extra shows in the U.S. and Canada in October and November 2024.

Taylor Swift Eras Tour Concert Film Coming to Movie Theaters

A theatrical version of the billion-dollar tour — a cultural juggernaut that just ended its North American leg — opens Oct. 13.

Taylor Swift sings into a microphone onstage, wearing a sparkly leotard and high silver boots.

By Joe Coscarelli

Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour, the billion-dollar juggernaut that has dominated the cultural calendar this year, may be on a break before picking up internationally, but its momentum will only rest so long: The show is coming to movie theaters this fall.

“Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour” concert film will be released in the United States, Canada and Mexico on Oct. 13, Swift announced on social media Thursday, with U.S. AMC Theaters promising at least four showtimes per day from Thursday to Sunday upon opening.

“The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon,” Swift said. “Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged.”

Anticipating the white-hot demand that has followed the tour since its announcement, crashing ticketing systems around the world , AMC promised in a news release that it had “bolstered its ticket server capacity to handle traffic at more than 5 times the current record for the most ever tickets sold in an hour.” (The company added, however, that it was “also aware that no ticketing system in history seems to have been able to accommodate the soaring demand from Taylor Swift fans when tickets are first placed on sale.”)

Tickets are on sale now. Prices start at $19.89 for adults and $13.13 for children, substantially less than what fans paid for the tour itself — especially on the robust secondary market — as the concert industry adjusts to sometimes prohibitively high costs for its biggest events .

Swift, 33, wrapped this year’s North American dates with four shows in Mexico last week. Her downtime, though, will be brief. In addition to the movie version of the concert, the singer will release “1989 (Taylor’s Version),” the fourth of rerecorded original albums, two weeks later, on Oct. 27. By November, the Eras Tour will pick up in Argentina before traveling around the world in 2024, with dates — including nine additional U.S. shows — continuing into November 2024.

“1989 (Taylor’s Version),” the new edition of her 2014 pop blockbuster, marks Swift’s seventh release in barely three years, a period of artistic productivity that has fueled pent-up, post-pandemic demand for the singer’s live show. Jon Caramanica, a critic for The New York Times, said in a review of the first concert in March that the Eras Tour put on display “how many pivots Swift has undertaken in her career, and how the accompanying risks can have wildly different consequences.”

The trade publication Pollstar has estimated that the singer sold about $14 million in tickets for each show so far. By the end of next year, the 146 stadium dates could reach $1.4 billion or more in sales.

Missed the Eras Tour when it came through your city? Don’t worry, you still have a chance to catch it — but this time, on the big screen.

Taylor Swift announced on Aug. 31 that she’d be bringing her massively popular global trek to AMC theaters all across North America, following the conclusion of its first U.S. leg earlier this month. Sharing an 80-second trailer jam-packed with shots from Swift’s career-spanning stage show, the 33-year-old pop star took to social media to announce the exciting news.

Just like with the Eras Tour tickets, anticipation for the concert film is so high, Swifties brought down the ticketing app — in this case, the AMC app instead of Ticketmaster — with Swifties tweeting about wait times, and some noting that they couldn’t even get the app to load. Ahead of the concert announcement, the company had even upgraded its website so that it could handle more than five times thelargest ticketing traffic it previously experienced.

“AMC is … aware that no ticketing system in history seems to have been able to accommodate the soaring demand from Taylor Swift fans when tickets are first placed on sale,” the company had said in a statement announcing the concert film, which also warned fans of possible delays and outages of its website.

Keep reading to see everything Billboard knows so far about the Eras Tour concert film, below:

When It Comes Out

Taylor Swift

The Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour   movie arrives in theaters Friday, October 13.

How to Get Tickets

AMC will offer the film in IMAX and Dolby Cinema as well as standard screenings, with fees varying by format and theatre. In anticipation of an expected rush of interest — a.k.a., a repeat of Ticketmaster’s hectic presale roll-out for the U.S. Eras Tour dates — AMC upgraded its website and ticketing engines to handle more than five times the largest influx of ticket-buying traffic ever experienced by the company.

With all that said, standard tickets are $19.89 (plus tax) for adults and $13.13 for children and seniors (plus tax). The film will be available in AMC theaters in the U.S., Canada and Mexico, as well as certain other movie operators that AMC is working as distributor for in those three countries ( Cinemark , Cineplex and Cinepolis).

Every U.S. AMC Theatre location will run the movie at least four times per day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays while it’s showing.

Tickets are already on sale. Read on for more information on how to get tickets here .

When It Was Filmed, And Where

The Eras Tour film was shot over the course of Swift’s first three shows at SoFi Stadium, where she performed a total of six straight shows in early August. The Los Angeles venue attracted a total of nearly 500,000 fans.

Possible Surprise Songs

The pop star performed a total of six surprise songs during her Aug. 3-5 dates at SoFi, meaning each of them are possible contenders for a featured spot in the film: “I Can See You,” “Maroon,” “Our Song,” “You Are in Love,” “Death by a Thousand Cuts” and “You’re on Your Own, Kid.”

One possible hint as to which of these songs will be included is that the Eras movie trailer shows Swift’s “self-titled” debut as being featured in the film. The sole song from her first album performed at any of the three taped shows was “Our Song,” which cropped up during her acoustic set on Aug. 4.

Plus, against her early tour promise that she wouldn’t repeat any non- Midnights surprise songs, this was Swift’s second time singing “Our Song” during the acoustic section of an Eras show — the first being in Las Vegas in March. Coincidence?

The Runtime

Taylor Swift

An average Eras Tour concert runs for more than three hours, but Swift’s publicist Tree Paine confirmed to Billboard that the concert film has an official runtime of 2 hours, 45 mins.

It’s unclear what parts of Swift’s show her team may have shaved off to get the movie down to a shorter length.

The Director

The Eras Tour film was directed by Sam Wrench, the filmmaker behind past concert movies like Billie Eilish Live at the O2 and  BTS: Permission to Dance . The Grammy-nominated creative specializes in shooting live music content, with a resumé that includes projects for Lizzo, Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber, The Weeknd and Mary J. Blige.

There Are Already Easter Eggs

Notice anything odd about those ticket prices?

AMC is charging a standard $19.89 fee (minus tax) for adults, a clear callback to Swift’s 2014 fifth studio album 1989 — which, coincidentally, is also her next “Taylor’s Version” re-record on the docket, with 1989 (Taylor’s Version) arriving this October. Plus, kids and senior tix are priced $13.13, a not-so-subtle reference to Swift’s famous lucky number, 13.

Then, not so much an Easter egg but something worth decoding, Swift included this in her announcement post for the film: “1, 2, 3 LGB!!!! (iykyk).”

Need an explainer? Allow Billboard to translate. Dating back to the Reputation Tour, it’s been a tradition for Swifties to yell “1, 2, 3, let’s go b-tch!” in between the opening refrain and first verse of “Delicate,” which Swift still sings live at the Eras Tour. It all started with a viral video from one fan who originated the phrase, and you can be sure to hear it ripple through the audience in the Eras Tour movie.

It's Going to Be A Full Experience

Taylor Swift

It seems like Swift is doing her best to make the Eras Tour film viewing experience feel as similar as possible to experiencing an actual Eras Tour concert. That’s because she encouraged fans to engage in all the same festivities as they would at a live show when they hit theaters for a screening: “Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged,” she wrote in her announcement for the film.

Inspired by a lyric in Midnights track “You’re on Your Own, Kid,” Swifties have spent the summer exchanging handmade friendship bracelets at Eras Tour shows — even celebrities have gotten in on the trend!

The Song You Probably Won't See

“‘Tis The Damn Season” is usually a fixture in the Evermore set list, but it probably won’t be included in the Eras Tour concert film. That’s because it was replaced with “No Body, No Crime,” which Swift performed with openers HAIM, in all of the performances that were taped for the movie.

The only way you’ll see the fan-favorite soft jam on the big screen is if it was shot at another one of Swift’s shows without anyone noticing.

It's Not Swift's First Documentary

Swifties may remember that this isn’t the “Anti-Hero” singer’s first time in a feature documentary film, and it certainly isn’t the first time she’s put together a concert film for one of her tours.

Taylor Swift | Eras Tour will follow Swift’s Netflix documentary Miss Americana , which came out in 2020. The Lana Wilson-directed project largely captured the star as she was transitioning from her Reputation era to Lover while finding confidence as an activist.

Prior to that, Swift released concert films for her Reputation and 1989 tours, via Netflix and Apple Music, respectively. She also released DVDs of her first two headlining treks before that: 2010’s Journey to Fearless and 2011’s Speak Now World Tour — Live .

How It Got Around The SAG-AFTRA Strike

The Eras Tour film was created at a time when production on almost every other big screen project was halted by the SAG-AFTRA writers’ strike. Rules of the labor strike, which began in July 2023, mandate that no members are allowed to work on or promote any of their films until their demands are met by production companies — so how did Swift’s come together in that time period?

As it turns out, a source close to the Swift film confirmed to  Billboard  that the Eras doc obtained clearance under the SAG-AFTRA interim agreement before filming. The agreement green lights individual non-AMPTP (Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers) productions that meet the standards sought by unions involved in the strike, including scheduled breaks, payment for fittings, meal and wardrobe allowances for principal actors and background actors, per diems, rest periods and more.

Billboard  also confirmed that the Swift film is included under an assumed name on the  list of approved interim agreement projects .

It's Already Breaking Records

Taylor Swift

AMC announced the morning after tickets went on sale that the film event had already broken its single-day advance-ticket sales revenue records . The haul? An astounding $26 million in just 24 hours. The theater chain noted that its the highest advance sales revenue day in the company’s 103-year history. The previous first-24-hours record for AMC was held by 2021’s Spider-Man: No Way Home , which brought in $16.9 million — an amount that the chain said Swift’s concert film surpassed in the first three hours tickets were on sale.

If you (like me) are one of the unlucky fans who couldn't nab a presale code in time to buy a ticket to the Eras Tour, then the latest Swiftie news will likely put an end to your grieving period. At last, Taylor Swift's epic, continent-spanning, economy-boosting concert is getting the big screen treatment.

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour officially debuted in movie theaters last fall, aptly premiering on October (can you guess it?) 13th.

“The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon 😆,” the pop star announced in an Instagram post on August 31. “Starting Oct 13th you’ll be able to experience the concert film in theaters in North America! Tickets are on sale now. Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged 🫶 1, 2, 3 LGB!!!! (iykyk)”

More big news for Swifties: a new Golden Globes awards category that recognizes cinematic and box office achievement has officially made the concert film a Globe nominee, earning blondie her fifth-ever Globe nomination.

Ahead, we list everything you need to know about the film.

When can I watch the film?

Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour dropped in theaters on October 13 (pointedly, the date is yet another reference to Swift's lucky number and one of her go-to Easter eggs).

How can I get a ticket?

Tickets are currently on sale at AMCTheatres.com and Fandango.com . Adult tickets will be priced at $19.89 plus tax, while children's/senior tickets will sell at $13.13 plus tax. The movie will additionally be available to watch in IMAX and other premium large formats for an additional fee. Members of AMC's Stub A-List will not be able to use their membership to reserve tickets for this event.

Buy Tickets Here

Anticipating the high volume of demand (and judging from Swifties' prior tendency to crash ticket sales sites ), AMC said in a statement that they “upgraded its website and ticketing engines to handle more than five times the largest influx of ticket-buying traffic the Company has ever experienced before.” Still, “AMC is also aware that no ticketing system in history seems to have been able to accommodate the soaring demand from Taylor Swift fans when tickets are first placed on sale.” In other words, keep calm and expect possible “delays, longer-than-usual ticket-purchase waiting-room times and possible outages.”

AMC is also expected to play the concert film at least four showtimes per day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at every AMC location in the United States.

Where can I watch it?

AMC will show the movie in its theaters located across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. The theatrical distributor has additionally coordinated with other theatre operators to secure viewing locations, such as Cinemark in the U.S., Cineplex in Canada, and Cinepolis in Mexico. The film is also now available to purchase via video on demand for at-home viewing.

  • Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie , officially titled TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film , broke sales records within the first 24 hours, bringing in a massive audience.
  • The movie will release in U.S., Canadian, and Mexican theaters on October 13, 2023 and will likely have a shorter exclusivity period before hitting international theaters.
  • The movie's setlist includes 45 songs from various eras of Swift's career, with two surprise songs performed during filming at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California.

With the announcement of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie , many fans want to know the ticket information, release date, streaming platform, and song list. Taylor Swift is a country singer turned pop star with a massive fanbase called Swifties. On March 17, 2023, Swift embarked on a worldwide tour celebrating all her past musical eras. This tour, fittingly called The Eras Tour, broke multiple records for the most attendees, ticket sales, and applause times.

Fans got great news when the pop star announced the upcoming release of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie, officially titled TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film. Considering all of Swift's concerts sold out, leaving many people unable to attend, this movie is expected to bring in a massive audience. Like the tour itself, Swift's concert film broke sales records within the first 24 hours, according to CNN . Here is all the information known about Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie.

When Is The Taylor Swift Eras Tour Movie In Theaters

TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film is set to release in U.S., Canadian, and Mexican theaters on October 13, 2023 at most major chains. As of the time of writing, the movie will air in AMC Theatres until November 5. However, this time period may be extended depending on the demand for movie tickets and box office sales. If the initial sales are any indication, this movie will probably stay in theaters for longer than the almost three-week run it is currently slated for.

How To Get Taylor Swift Eras Tour Movie Tickets

The movie TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film will release in AMC, Regal, and Cinemark theaters. AMC Theatres plans to show the film at least four times per day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays at every location across the U.S. Tickets will cost $19.89 for adults and $13.13 for children and seniors, plus tax. Though most of these chains offer loyalty memberships, it appears they will not be applicable to this film. Deadline confirmed that AMC Stubs A-List members will not be able to use their free passes.

Luckily, fans don't have to wait in order to get tickets for Taylor Swift's Eras Tour movie . Tickets went on sale August 31 through websites like Fandango and AMC. Unfortunately, while tickets are already available, fans may experience long periods in queues. According to The Economic Times , the tickets were in such high demand within the first 24 hours that the AMC Theaters app crashed from the influx of traffic.

When Will The Taylor Swift Eras Tour Movie Be On Streaming?

Currently, there is no set streaming release date for TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film . With the movie hitting theaters late this year, it's likely to release on streaming in early 2024. This speculative timeframe is based on a few factors. Firstly, the movie will likely have a short exclusivity period with U.S. movie theaters. Then the film would likely hit international theaters at the end of 2023. This would push a streaming release to 2024.

When the movie does begin streaming, it's likely that Netflix will have exclusive rights to the Eras Tour concert movie. This prediction is based on the fact that Swift previously worked with the company to release her 2020 documentary Miss Americana . On the other hand, the streaming platform HBO Max has a large collection of concert movies, which could make it an appealing option for TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film .

Where Will The Taylor Swift Eras Tour Movie Release Internationally?

As of the time of writing, TAYLOR SWIFT: THE ERAS TOUR Concert Film is only set to release in North American theaters. It's likely that the film will hit international theaters after Swift completes the international leg of her tour. This will keep the show a surprise for everyone who has a ticket. Alternatively, the movie may forgo international theaters altogether and go straight to streaming instead. This would be a missed opportunity considering the U.S. tickets have already set sales records.

Now in theaters: a three-hour testament to taylor swift's titan era.

Taylor Swift's Eras tour film is precisely as advertised: nothing more and nothing less than a perfectly edited recording of an extraordinary show in all its technical, happiness-inducing splendor.

Ever since I saw Taylor Swift perform in August, I've struggled – even as a non-Swiftie – to put into words the sheer spectacle and electric energy of that night. I've often turned to the shaky amateur footage on my phone to relay the magical madness inside SoFi Stadium.

Well, it turns out the flexing and nostalgia were completely unnecessary because that show was recorded to live in pristine perpetuity for anyone to see. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is an impeccably shot multi-camera edit of Swift's Los Angeles performances, recorded in immersive surround sound and featuring almost the entire three-hour setlist, friendship bracelets, screams and tears – and a towering Taylor Swift no longer a distant analog dream but a supersized IMAX goddess.

So how does it compare to other concert films?

Concert films of course have a long lineage – and this is hardly Swift's first feature-length film. A film of the Reputation tour is still streaming on Netflix and on Disney+, folklore: the long pond studio sessions is a cozy flannel dream of firepits and intimate acoustic performance. This, however, is a movie theater extravaganza of the relentless show(wo)manship, spectacular stagecraft and choreography created in a landmark business partnership with AMC cinemas at a time of existential crisis for the theater business. For this opening weekend, the film is playing in both Dolby and IMAX theaters so if you either missed the show or simply must return, the biggest and sharpest screens are available.

How three female artists lead this summer's billion-dollar pop culture revival

Pop Culture

How three female artists lead this summer's billion-dollar pop culture revival.

As a concert film, however, "Eras" is not D.A. Pennebaker's iconic film of Monterey Pop or Cameron Crowe's 2011 Pearl Jam Twenty film filtered through the critical gaze and formal experimentation of an auteur. Unlike rockumentaries – as the genre was sometimes called – there is no backstage footage, grainy underground tunnels or pre-show jitters and interviews. Does it even matter? The Eras film is precisely as advertised: nothing more and nothing less than a perfectly edited recreation of an extraordinary show in all its technical, happiness-inducing splendor. It's a film as a forever souvenir and one that also has the rare distinction of being released widely while the tour it is based on is still underway.

What's it like to see it in theaters – and how does that compare to the in-person experience?

In cinematic form, Eras is somehow even more relentless and exhausting than the real thing. There is minimal time for the natural transitions, outfit changes, and on-screen animated interludes that make the show breathe. Movie magic allows for immediate transitions between Eras and the only effects added to the film are typographical flourishes announcing the title of each specific album – shout out to the Reputation era snake animated to literally wrap the entire runway before Taylor sashes into the spotlight. That, I might add, did not happen in real life.

The biggest loss in stage-to-screen adaptation, of course, is the community and in-person magic of the Eras tour that can never be fully recreated in front of a silver screen no matter how many times Nicole Kidman underscores the magic of AMC. To compensate, screaming, filming, and jumping are being encouraged and at my screening – the first at the AMC Americana in Glendale, Calif. – the majority of the audience was rarely in its seats. The exceptions were the accompanying moms, seated like me but filming their daughters who were in turn filming Taylor who has of course now become an actual film.

What is gained on-screen is a much closer view of all the details and big budget artistry. Swift is in her titan era and as she courses through her multiple past selves, there is a musical theater-style roleplay that accompanies each chapter. She is demure and kind during Enchanted in her Cinderella ballgown, vengeful and sexy during Reputation, and in her Victorian cat-lady cottage best during folklore, with a healthy dose of woodsy and witchy during evermore. The diverse and brilliant ensemble of dancers that accompanied her on this tour also get their due in the film version as each expression, adjacent choreography and smile or growl comes into focus.

So is The Eras Film going to "save" The Movies?

Much has been made of the economies Swift has lifted during this Eras cycle and now she could be the savior of the fall film season with endangered movie theaters struggling with meager offerings as Hollywood actors continue their strike and critics lament the death of serious cinema. Swift is a masterful storyteller and so her presence on movie screens seems to be a fitting and natural extension of her brand. She is in fact working on her first fictional feature film for Searchlight so multihyphenate moviemaker is clearly the next era.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour is wildly entertaining but it is also a curious product that speaks to the larger themes of our IP-based age of content — recycled, reused and repackaged spin-offs. Above, AMC The Grove in Los Angeles, Calif., ahead of the film's world premiere on Oct. 11, 2023. Valerie Macon/AFP via Getty Images hide caption

That said, I am not quite sure Eras should be considered such a savior and comforting balm for cinema's struggles. It is wildly entertaining but it is also a curious product that speaks to the larger themes of our IP-based age of content – recycled, reused and repackaged spin-offs that find new, often exciting ways to extract consumers. Extraordinary concerts certainly deserve to be documented and filmed and rewatched and this tour remains inaccessible to so many outpriced and outmaneuvered by ticketing woes.

But as I left the cinema, a somber poster for Killers of the Flower Moon stared back at a wall-sized display of Swift in all her shimmering glory. That very traditional award-season film about the murders of indigenous Americans was already pushed back to make way for the Swifties and it is hardly in direct competition in theme or form. But what is playing on our increasingly limited numbers of moving screens, what is profitable, is in legitimate crisis. Is Eras the year's biggest movie and what larger era does that foreshadow? Well, Beyoncé is waiting her turn come November 30 – and even if I've already seen the in-person Renaissance, can anything truly complete with the Queen, now on the silver screen?

As with everything these women have achieved in this triumphant year, the entertainment industry's rules are being rewritten with each bejeweled move and regardless of what I or any critic thinks, the Eras film is already tracking to become the highest grossing concert film of all time.

If you couldn't afford a Taylor Swift ticket, or want to see the show again, or the show in your city was sold out, or want to see what the hype is about, there's good news.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour Concert Film is coming to AMC theaters across the U.S., Canada and Mexico starting Oct. 13, Swift announced Thursday.

"The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I'm overjoyed to tell you that it'll be coming to the big screen soon," she said on Instagram . "Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged."

How three female artists lead this summer's billion-dollar pop culture revival

Pop Culture

How three female artists lead this summer's billion-dollar pop culture revival, local economies are getting a boost from taylor swift and beyoncé concerts.

Tickets for the tour went on sale on Ticketmaster in November 2022, but the process went haywire , as the website crashed multiple times, prices fluctuated, sales were canceled and fans were left waiting for hours, only to end up empty-handed. The fiasco prompted Congress to investigate Ticketmaster's business practices.

Economists estimate her tour could generate $5 billion by its end in November 2024. The average Swift concertgoer has spent almost $1,300 to attend, including the price of a ticket, plus things like merchandise, hair and outfits and a hotel and flight for travelers, Maura Klaunig, an analyst at Camoin Associates, told NPR.

But if navigating marked-up resale prices isn't your jam, you can catch the show on the big screen for a fraction of the price. A standard ticket is $19.89 (a nod to the title of her 5th album, maybe?) and $13.13 for children and seniors. Upgraded tickets are also available for IMAX and Dolby.

Tickets have already gone on sale on the AMC and Fandango websites. The movie will have at least four showtimes Thursdays through Sundays at every AMC location.

In anticipation of the demand, AMC said it has strengthened its website and online ticket servers to handle "more than five times the largest influx of ticket-buying traffic the Company has ever experienced before." Members of AMC's Stubs A-List program won't be allowed to use their rewards or discounts for the film, and AMC is temporarily reducing the amount of online tickets sold for other movies.

Still, AMC warned that customers "may experience delays, longer-than-usual ticket-purchase waiting-room times and possible outages" and will try to fix them as soon as possible.

AMC is also partnering with other movie theaters, including Cinemark in the U.S., Cineplex in Canada and Cinepolis in Mexico to get Swift on more screens.

The film is directed by Sam Wrench, who is behind similar concert films featuring Lizzo, BTS, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Billie Eilish, Jennifer Lopez and Pentatonix.

  • Taylor Swift

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour movie made it into theaters by sidestepping Hollywood studios

  • Taylor Swift's new concert movie will be playing at AMC and other theaters beginning October 13.
  • In an unprecedented move in modern Hollywood, AMC Theaters is also the movie's distributor.
  • Here's how the deal was made — and why Hollywood is mad about it.

Insider Today

In an unprecedented move for modern-day Hollywood, a theater chain is releasing a movie on its own.

On Thursday, AMC Theatres announced that a movie version of Taylor Swift's Eras Tour will be showing in its theaters beginning October 13. But unlike practically all releases that play at its multiplexes, AMC is also the concert film's distributor.

This unique deal was made between Swift's family and the theater chain's CEO Adam Aron, according to Puck .

Swift's family presented the idea to Aron after they were disappointed by discussions they were having with several studios about releasing the 2-hour-and-45-minute documentary. The Swifts decided to cut out the middle-man and went straight to AMC, the biggest movie chain in the world.

With AMC Theatres in financial trouble (the company still owes more than $4 billion after taking on significant debt during the pandemic) and facing an uncertain fall movie season with the ongoing dual actors and screenwriters strikes, Aron jumped at the chance to showcase the record-breaking tour, which is on track to become the highest-grossing tour of all time .

Representatives for AMC Theatres and Taylor Swift didn't immediately respond to Insider's request for comment.

The terms of the deal are heavily in Swift's favor, though AMC will still make bank

As many Swifties have already noticed, the ticketing for "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" is unconventional. Regardless of location and showtime, there is a single fixed price for adults ($19.89, to replicate Swift's birth year and fifth album "1989") and another for children and seniors ($13.13, which is Swift's favorite number twice.) However, it costs more to see the movie in Imax.

The box-office numbers are likely to be massive. AMC announced Friday that the concert movie has become the highest advance sales revenue day in the company's 103-year history, beating "Spider-Man: No Way Home." Theaters showing the movie will also be required to play it for a minimum of four weeks.

Overall, the deal is great for AMC, but the chain won't be generating most of its revenue through the box office despite being the distributor. According to Puck, 43% of the box-office revenue will go to the other theaters showing the movie, and the remaining 57% will be shared between the Swifts and AMC, with the Swifts likely taking the bulk of those profits.

In comparison, Marvel's distributor Disney pockets 70% of MCU movies' opening-weekend box-office earnings.

Related stories

So, as always, AMC and the other theaters releasing the movie will be leaning heavily into concessions. AMC is already promoting collectible popcorn tubs for $14.99 and cups for $11.99.

A source at one studio that was interested in releasing the concert movie told Insider that an internal review of the Eras Tour done by its marketing team revealed that concertgoers spend an average of $300 at a single concert. Considering the spending power of Swift's fans, AMC can expect to sell a lot of these commemorative popcorn buckets.

You best believe Hollywood is fuming

In July, the Common Sense Institute estimated that in total, Taylor Swift's US tour "could generate $4.6 billion in total consumer spending, larger than the GDP of 35 countries." When those are the kinds of numbers we're dealing with, there are obviously going to be some folks who are angry they aren't getting a piece of it.

From movie studios to third-party, movie-ticket platforms, everyone was shocked by the announcement of Swift's concert film. Typically, all distributors are in the loop on each other's releases so marketing and screenings can be worked out months in advance. But when it came to "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," Insider has learned that all of the studios were not given a heads-up.

Universal was burnt the most: its Blumhouse release, "The Exorcist: Believer," had to be moved up a week. It originally had the same October 13 release date as Swift's movie (and millions had already been spent marketing it as such.)

One studio source told Insider the whole thing is "a little scary" because the move by AMC — and likely success of the Eras documentary release — could lead to the chain becoming a "mercenary" in the distribution space.

This also leads to the big question swirling around the movie industry at the moment: How is this all legal?

Until recently, the Paramount Consent Decrees regulated how movies were released. Back in the 1930s, the eight major studios at the time had a monopoly on the industry because they made the movies and then also owned the distribution and exhibition.

Established in the late 1940s, the decrees made it illegal for a single entity to own both sides of the movie business. However, due to changing times, the decrees were terminated in 2020, although there are still antitrust rules in place.

The Swift family's deal with AMC brings into question issues about price fixing and denying competitors access, but the latter seems to not be a major issue anymore. While AMC was ahead of everyone, it's not the only theater chain that will have showings of "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour." Major chains Regal and Cinemark will also be screening it, and distributor Variance Films has been brought on to book the documentary at mid-level chains and independent movie houses.

It will be interesting to see how the industry adapts to this unique release, which will likely be the talk of Hollywood through the fall.

Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour is set to appear in thousands of movie theaters.

The “Love Story” singer, 33, has been on the road since March 13 and will continue to tour until Nov. 23, 2024.

As some fans have been unable to see her live shows , Swift has now enabled her show to come to fans by releasing an Eras Tour concert film at every AMC Theatre in the U.S.

"The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon 😆," Swift posted on Instagram Thursday.

"Starting Oct 13th you’ll be able to experience the concert film in theaters in North America! Tickets are on sale now at amctheatres.com. Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged 🫶 1, 2, 3 LGB!!!! (iykyk)"

From Oct. 13, fans will be able to watch footage of Swift's tour for an adult ticket price of $19.89 (plus tax), while kids and senior tickets are priced at $13.13 (plus tax). This, however, doesn’t include AMC’s branded premium large-format screens.

Fans also have plenty of showtimes to choose from as the “theatrical concert experience” will be shown four times a day at every AMC theater on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

“TAYLOR SWIFT | THE ERAS TOUR concert film will be available in IMAX at AMC and Dolby Cinema at AMC and at AMC’s other branded premium large format screens for their standard upcharges,” reads a release from AMC Theaters.

The entertainment company also revealed they had increased their ticket server capacity to handle over five times more traffic than “the current record for the most ever tickets sold in an hour.”

Swift has entertained millions across the globe during her Eras Tour. On Monday, the songwriter gushed about her first-ever concerts in Mexico at Foro Sol stadium in Mexico City.

"After years of wanting to play in Mexico City, just got to play 4 of the most unforgettable shows for the most beautiful and generous fans," Swift wrote on Instagram alongside pictures from her shows. “Feeling so grateful for the memories we’re making together on this tour 🥹 TE AMO. 🇲🇽.”

Earlier this month, sources confirmed to PEOPLE that Swift gave bonuses to each member of her Eras Tour, reaching a total of $55 million .

CNN also revealed that Swift gave Eras Tour truck drivers $100,000 bonuses and handwritten letters for their efforts on the tour.

“The typical amount is $5,000 to $10,000 each. So this large amount is unbelievable," Michael Scherkenbach, founder and CEO of Shomotion trucking company, told the outlet.

“These men and women, they live on the road. They sleep during the day and work all night,” he added. “It’s a grueling task. They leave their families, young children for weeks. For Taylor’s tour, they’ve been away from home for 24 weeks.”

The 10 Most Rewatchable Bad Movies of the '90s, Ranked

Every pixar movie of the 2010s, ranked, the 10 most psychological war movies, ranked, quick links, when is 'taylor swift: the eras tour' coming to theaters, where can you watch 'taylor swift: the eras tour', is there a trailer for 'taylor swift: the eras tour', who stars in 'taylor swift: the eras tour', what is 'taylor swift: the eras tour' about, who is making 'taylor swift: the eras tour', movies like 'taylor swift: the eras tour' you can watch right now.

"Taylor" and "Swift" are probably the two most uttered words of the summer. You may have been asked what "Era" you're in. Or, maybe you've noticed people suddenly referring to their sweaters as "cardigans." No matter how Taylor Swift has impacted your life, you're sure to hear about her upcoming concert movie, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour .

Captured during her still continuing stadium tour of the same name, it contains two hours and forty minutes of footage from the concert that even die-hard fans were unable to snag tickets for. The concert film is already breaking records and is projected to continue doing so upon its release in theaters on October 13th. Here's everything we know about the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour .

The Eras Tour premieres in theaters on October 13th, an important date for movie lovers and Swifties alike. For film buffs, it was the original release date of the highly anticipated Exorcist sequel directed by David Gordon Green , The Exorcist: Believer . However, once news that Swift and her hoards of fans would be sprinting to theaters to see The Eras Tour , the theatrical release date for Believer was moved up a week. Jason Blum shared a hilarious tweet about production company Blumhouse's decision to move the opening date, so there doesn't appear to be any bad blood between the filmmakers and Swift. Thirteen is also Taylor Swift's lucky number, with fans routinely drawing it on their hands at her concerts.

With ticket sales projected to reach $100 million opening weekend, Taylor Swift fans don't seem to be calming down anytime soon. The Swifts made an exclusive deal with AMC theaters to only show The Eras Tour at AMC locations. The power of Swifties was proven once again when they crashed the AMC app trying to pre-purchase tickets for the film ahead of time. Crashing major websites is a trick Swift fans know all too well. This is the second time this year Swift fans have crashed a major website, the first occasion being the sale of tickets for the actual Eras Tour. AMC is currently advertising fun extras you can add to your viewing experience, like Eras Tour popcorn buckets and drink cups. If you want to see The Eras Tour , you better speak now , because tickets have been selling like crazy.

For those of us who were unable to get tickets to the tour and have had to settle for squinting at fan-recorded videos of the concert, we can stop looking so close at our screens with this high-def trailer for The Eras Tour :

Other than Miss Swift herself, get ready to be jealous of all the dancers who get to be on stage with her. Amanda Balen , Taylor Banks , Karen Chuang , Audrey Douglass , Tori Evans , and many other incredible dancers and musicians are joining Taylor on her Eras tour. Their impressive resumes include films like Academy Award-winner La La Land and the Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds -led Spirited and critically acclaimed shows like Glee , Ru Paul's Drag Race , and Winning Time: The Rise of the Laker's Dynasty . Being a part of a show (and movie) like Eras , these talented dancers are definitely not having a cruel summer.

Swift uses the word "Era" to describe the different states of mind she was in during each of her albums. From "Speak Now" to "Red" to "Lover," each album encapsulates a different version of Swift, and this concert is no different. The singer takes us through each one of these Eras, not just in the songs she sings but in outfit choices, scenery, and even down to the details on her microphone. Given some of the voiceover from the trailer and the moment of behind-the-scenes footage we see, we can infer that a bit more than just the concert will be explored. While Swift's previous documentary, Miss Americana , included mostly personal moments with the singer-songwriter, The Eras Tour feels more in line with her other concert film releases: Reputation Stadium Tour and The 1989 World Tour Live , which were mostly focused on the performance aspect of Swift's life.

The concert flick is directed by Sam Wrench , who is no stranger to working with megastar musicians. Wrench's previous credits include Billie Eilish Live at the O2 , Brandi Carlile: In The Canyon , and BTS: Permission To Dance on Stage . Wrench has also worked with Mary J. Blige , Blur , Ariana Grande , and Mumford & Sons . The film is being distributed by Variance Films .

Coldplay: A Head Full of Dreams (2018) - Want to have the chills for an hour and forty-four minutes straight? With incredible footage all the way back from Coldplay 's inception (including a brace-faced Chris Martin ), A Head Full of Dreams gives you the most intimate behind-the-scenes footage you could ever ask for. One of the many incredible moments happens when lead singer Martin doubts the lyrics he's writing for the bands eventual worldwide hit "Fix You." The film does an excellent job of pairing this with us fast-forwarding years into the future and seeing a crowd of around 50,000 people singing - and hysterically crying - along to the words the band was so doubtful anyone would resonate with. It truly is the perfect mix of showing Coldplay's hard work along with their undeniable knack for making the world a better - and much more colorful - place.

Katy Perry: Part of Me (2012) - While Katy Perry and Taylor Swift have had a checkered past, the two seemed to express that their feud had been put to rest in Swift's music video for her song, "You Need To Calm Down." Now that that's been taken care of, you can enjoy Perry's 2012 documentary concert film Part of Me , which explores the singer's humble beginnings, her hard work on the way to the top, and the moment of her heartbreaking divorce from comedian Russell Brand . The film does an excellent job of juxtaposing her iconically colorful Teenage Dream concert with the darker side of fame.

Beyoncé: HOMECOMING (2019) - For those of you who have heard the word "Beychella" and want to know what the big deal is, thankfully, it's all captured on film. This rare behind-the-scenes look into Beyoncé's family life and astounding performance at the 2018 Coachella Festival is something to behold. It is as full of heart as it is entertaining, sure to delight all Beyoncé fans and impress even those who don't know what the "Bey Hive" is.

Friendship bracelets, novelty popcorn buckets and lots of singing: Taylor Swift 'Eras Tour' goes to the big screen

Image: Taylor Swift takes a selfie with a fan at the premiere for "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour" in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

LOS ANGELES — Taylor Swift was here.

At the Grove mall in Los Angeles on Thursday, the pop superstar's face was plastered on posters of  “The Eras Tour” film. A red carpet, on which Swift posed with fans (and Beyoncé), was still partially in place.

And for the Swifties who didn’t get to go to the Hollywood premiere Wednesday, seeing the movie at the same mall the next evening was the next best thing.

Wearing friendship bracelets — like the ones traded at Eras Tour concerts — and sporting Swift-themed attire, dozens showed up to catch the opening night of the movie’s release.

Eli Countryman, 25, had already bought tickets for what was supposed to be opening Friday. But almost as soon as he saw Swift’s surprise announcement Wednesday changing the date, he knew he was in for a back-to-back screening.

“I was doing all my deep thinking like I usually do in the shower. And as soon as I got out, I texted my roommate and I said, ‘Don’t make plans tonight. Because we’re coming here,’” he said, as he accepted a friendship bracelet from a fellow moviegoer.

Swift may help give a boost on the scale of “ Barbenheimer ” to the box office — analysts are predicting that the concert film could make as much as $150 million during its opening weekend , according to CNBC. That would make it one of the highest openings of this year.

The concert film will play in more than 4,000 movie theaters in the United States, Canada and Mexico, including in all AMC locations in the country, the company said in a news release. It will also play at every ODEON Cinemas location throughout Europe.

While the early showings at the Grove on Thursday weren’t packed, the crowd was enthusiastic. Many belted Swift’s lyrics as they waved, gestured and clapped along with her routines. Several performances drew applause within the theater.

Decked out in a re-creation of Swift’s bedazzled black “Reputation” bodysuit, Hailey Hermida said the show made her experience the emotion of every song. It was almost spiritual, she said.

“It’s especially cool seeing her through every single stage of her life. It’s like watching a story, almost,” said the 16-year-old, who was there with her mother and a friend. “It’s like you can feel so connected to a person even if you don’t know them and I think that’s so beautiful.”

In New York City, another small but enthusiastic crowd turned up at Lincoln Center’s AMC to relive the magic of Swift’s tour.

Image: popcorn buckets

Will Bartow, 34, sported a Travis Kelce jersey, in honor of the rumors that Swift is dating the Kansas City Chiefs tight end. Swift was spotted cheering on Kelce at the Chiefs-Broncos game Thursday night.

“Funnily enough, I had already ordered this as my Halloween costume before Taylor ever showed up at the game,” Bartow said.

His fiancée, Olivia Mattsey, 28, sported a “Loving him was Red,” T-shirt, referencing a popular Swift lyric from “Red.” The two didn’t get to go to the actual Eras Tour — they said the resale costs were too high, especially since they are planning a 2024 wedding. So this was Mattsey’s opportunity to experience the tour, which took the world by storm.

“I will dance, I will sing, I will cry, probably,” she said before entering the theater.

At first, the audience appeared reluctant to shake it off.

But when “Blank Space” began to play, the theater turned into a party — and half of the audience stood up and ran to the front and began an impromptu dance party.

When Swift switched to the acoustic portion of her show on screen, the dance party in the theater ended, and someone screamed “It’s surprise song o’clock!”

Image: Taylor Swift friendship bracelets on a large key ring.

The comment was in reference to how Swift performed two surprise songs at each of her concerts. Ahead of the concert film's release, many were wondering which two would make the cut.

Some in the crowd sang along to the first surprise song, “Our Song,” from Swift’s debut album. Others could be seen wiping their tears as the second surprise song, “You’re On Your Own, Kid,” played.

As the weekend approaches, theaters continue to brace for the arrival of Swifties en masse.

At Marcus Theatres , some locations are setting up stations to make friendship bracelets for the occasion.

At AMCs, specialty popcorn buckets featuring the Eras Tour logo on them (which are $14.99, including popcorn) are expected to sell out fast.

“I had to justify this popcorn bucket to my parents,” said Natalie Shane, 19, who was at the Lincoln Center AMC on Thursday. “I was like, ‘Guys, this is gonna be used as storage. It’s not going to be thrown away. This is gonna be on display in my room.’”

Meanwhile, at Alamo Drafthouse theaters, singing is encouraged.

“Even we know that there’s no possible way to not sing along when hit by the power of Taylor Swift,” the company wrote in its FAQ for the film. “So while there won’t be Rowdy Screenings per se, we’re definitely down with you getting a little rowdy at the screenings — within reason, of course. Let’s keep it fun and cute out there.”
