Visiting Iso Syote, Finland – A Complete Guide

Don’t like the cold? Neither did I when we decided to go to Finland for a spot of Winter fun!

On the other hand, I’ve always liked the idea of the northern lights , clear skies and fabulously frosted landscapes. All of which, it appear, seem to require putting up with a spot of chilly weather.

Today I want to share with you the winter activities we got up to in Finland when we visited Iso-Syöte.

This is Finland’s southernmost fell, and the region of Finland that gets more snow than anywhere else in the country. It’s exceedingly popular with locals for its plethora of skiing options, and is wonderful for the visitor because you can do pretty much every Winter activity you had ever dreamed of from one handy location.

When we visited we stayed at the Hotel Iso-Syote , perched atop Iso-Syote hill itself. They also happen to be able to arrange all the tours listed on the page (and a few more to boot!) Here are some of the things we got up to (more on the hotel and what they offer at the end of the post).

What to do in Iso-Syöte, Finland

1. husky sledding at iso-syöte.

That husky sledding experience I had was pretty epic, but I appreciate that not everyone wants to spend two days on the back of a sled going into the wilderness.

Perhaps a nice a relaxing 7km hour long ride under the winter sun is more your style – just enough time to get the hang of it, but not quite enough time to risk losing feeling in your extremities. With a nice cup of hot fire brewed coffee to finish off with? Why not.

So we did the husky sledding experience, which was a lot of fun, and not too strenuous, and unlike my previous foray into the world of being pulled along my dogs, I managed to avoid falling off entirely. Which was nice.

2. Snowmobiling at Iso-Syöte

I’m not going to lie, snowmobiling was far and away my favourite winter activity in Finland. I first got my hands on a snowmobile up in Rovaniemi with Lapland Safaris, and decided then that this was a mode of transport I could get right behind. Not least because of the heated handle bars.

Up at the Hotel Iso-Syote, nearly every experience requires the use of a snowmobile in order to reach your destination, a fact I was most pleased about. Husky Sledding? Take a snowmobile to get there. Ice Fishing? Take a snowmobile to get there. Northern Lights safari? Drive around in the dark in a snowmobile chasing the northern lights.

I’m sure you get the idea.

I spent a great deal of time driving a snowmobile during my four days up in Iso-Syote, and loved every minute of it. Even those two times I buried the snowmobile deep into a pile of snow and spent a good amount of time digging the poor thing out. It was, at least, warming.

3. Ice Fishing at Iso-Syöte

Fishing. I’ve done a fair bit of it over the years, and could never quite see the point, especially as you can find perfectly decent fish at most fish mongers without having to go through the hassle of baiting a hook and sitting around wondering if anything interesting is ever going to happen.

In this case though, the ice fishing did require a good long ride on a snowmobile to reach the destination, which was particularly good fun over the snow and slush of the lake. Yes, I did get stuck and take an hour to dig my snowmobile out. No, that wasn’t part of the itinerary.

Other highlights of ice fishing include having a hilariously tiny fishing rod, getting to play with a giant hand drill in order to pierce the ice and cooking sausages over the fire, accompanied by hot, fire cooked coffee.

It basically didn’t matter that we failed to catch any fish at all.

4. Northern Lights Chasing

Ah, those elusive northern lights. I caught a glimpse of them up in Rovaniemi on my snowmobile safari, but it just left me wanting more.

So a three hour snowmobile trek down into the valley to find a dark place and catch the lights seemed like a jolly good idea. And not only because of the thrill of snowmobiling in the dark, also because, well, the northern lights!

Ok, so I didn’t get to see the northern lights. I mention this now so as to save you from any heady anticipation followed by disappointment.

It turns out the northern lights aren’t something you can just see on-demand. There has to be solar activity and flares and a clear sky and various other factors.

I did get a clear sky and a warm campfire though, which at –35C was very appreciated. Plus the opportunity to take photos like the below. Which made it all worth it.

5. Snowshoeing at Iso-Syöte

The only winter activity we did which didn’t require a snow mobile. Boo! Still, strapping on snow shoes and tramping around the massively surreal landscape around the Hotel was still quite the adventure.

Much like many of my other adventures, this wasn’t without mishap. Snowshoeing takes a bit of practice to master, particularly on the up or downhill phases, so there was a spot of stumbling to contend with. It was all worth getting a camera full of snow though, because the views up here, across the surrounding frozen landscape, were quite magical.

Plus those frozen trees are pretty epic looking, I think you’ll agree.

6. Skiing and Snowboarding

Of course, no round-up of things to do in Iso Syote would be complete without mentioning skiing! Iso-Syote is, after all, first and foremost a ski resort, home to 17 slopes that you can ski on.

These are serviced by 10 lifts, and range from easy blue runs to more challenging black and red runs, as well as off-piste areas and a number of snowparks for the more adventurous amongst you.

As well as the 17 main runs, there’s also a a children’s SnowWorld, which has four slopes and four runs, designed to help younger skiers improve their skills.

There’s ski and snowboard rental on site, as well as a ski school for lenses. If you are looking for somewhere to ski in Finland, Iso Syote is an excellent choice as it has the most snow of any location in the country, meaning conditions are likely to be good for your visit.

Where to stay at Iso-Syöte

We stayed at the Hotel Iso-Syote , which was wonderfully located at the top of Iso-Syote hill. This offers stunning (seriously, unbelievable) views of the surrounding landscape, easily the best view from any hotel I stayed at during my time in Finland.

It also turned out, much to my surprise, that the hill was the warmest place to build the hotel, due to the fact that cold air sinks (can’t beat science!).

So even when temperatures hit –30C in the valley below, the air around the hotel was a far more reasonable –12C or so. Yes, I appreciate that’s not exactly warm, but it’s still easier to cope with than –30C!

As well as arranging all of the activities that we got up to, the Hotel is also at the top of the ski lift for easy access to the slopes, has a sauna (this is Finland after all) , swimming pool, two outdoor hot tubs and a variety of massage therapies.

Finally, the on-site restaurant offered a truly excellent a La Carte menu, with all the classics you’d expect in Finland, including reindeer and salmon (of course!), or daily buffet options. Accommodation ranged from simple twin rooms up to a gorgeous suite, as well as individual cottages for 4 – 8 people.

If you’re looking for a place where you can experience all the wonder of Lapland from one handy spot that also comes with a bar, excellent restaurant, great views and a plethora of post-activity relaxation options, then we can very much recommend it.

How to get to Iso-Syote

The easiest way to get to Iso-Syote is by car – it’s approximately a 1.5 to 2 hour drive from the city of Oulu, which is an hour’s flight from Helsinki. There is also a bus connection to Iso-Syote from Oulu.

The Arctic Hilltop Boutique Hotel Iso-Syote stands majestically on a fjell top with breathtaking panoramic views of the forests and lakes below. The hotel, which suffered damage from a fire in 2018, has been transformed into a modern, high class resort with excellent facilities catering for couples, families and groups of friends traveling together looking for an action packed holiday with excellent northern lights viewing potential.

There are a wide range of room options available depending on your preference, whether it be style, size or budget. For your stay, we have chosen the stylish Aurora View Suites - split over two floors they have a double bed on the upper level with bathroom and seating area Downstairs is a further seating area which can be used to accommodate two further people and a bathroom with private sauna. It also has a balcony with views towards the north-east sky so you can keep watch for the dancing aurora while enjoying your very own jacuzzi.

For something extra special, there are three unique Suites at Iso-Syote Hotel, all with a double. The original Suite, “Eagles View” has glass on all sides, even the roof, offering panoramic views and is split on two floors with a private sauna and jacuzzi. The “Bear Cave Suite” has a strong essence of natural materials with large windows, two saunas, a Turkish steam sauna and a traditional Finnish one. The large living area has a fireplace to relax in, as well as a private jacuzzi. Lastly, the newest addition is the “Phoenix Suite”, decorated in tones of charcoal and ash to commemorate the fire in 2018. Relax by the open fire while gazing at the snowy landscape outside, or unwind in the hot tub, steam room and sauna.

All meals are served in the Hilltop Restaurant which is situated on the top floor of the hotel and showcases the spectacular views from the large windows. Guests are on half board basis, the menu combining local and traditional cuisine with a taste of international flavours.

Iso-Syote offers lots of experiences for the perfect winter activity holiday. There are several activities that can be pre-booked at the hotel from the weekly safari program. These will be confirmed at time of checking in. All the trips are under guide supervision and include safety information if relevant and warm winter clothing. The resort is right next to the ski slopes of Syote, and guests can make arrangements to hit the slopes in their free time if they wish.

All guests at the hotel can use the Arctic Spa facilities at the hotel. They include an indoor pool, therapy pool and hot tub. The sauna section has a traditional Finnish sauna and a steam bath, where you can relax in comfort after a day in the cold. The spa offers beauty treatments and massages - bookings need to be made in advance before arrival. Please note, you will need to bring your own swim wear.

Fell Top Cottages

Experience the space and comfort

The Fell Top Cottages are located on top of the Iso-Syöte fell in the hotel courtyard, right beside the slopes, ski tracks and mountain bike routes. Enjoy the spacious and comfortable Fell Top Cottages at Hotel Iso-Syöte with your family or a group of friends.

The Fell Top Cottages (75 m²) have three bedrooms and two bathrooms on two floors. The downstairs living room has a fireplace, sofa, armchair, flat-screen TV and DVD player. Every Fell Top Cottage also has a kitchen. Downstairs, there is a bedroom, sauna, shower / toilet and drying cabinet for outdoor equipment.

Upstairs, there is a small lobby, shower / toilet and two bedrooms, each with two single beds.

There is a locked outdoor storage shed outside the cottage for skis, bicycles and other sports equipment.

Some of the cottages have a connecting door that you can use to join the two into a large six-bedroom cottage. In the winter season, availability of the cottages with a connecting door is limited.

Idyllisch Iso Syöte Lapland, 5 dagen

Dag 1. tervetuloa lapiin, welkom in fins lapland.

Uw 5 daagse avontuur in Lapland gaat beginnen! U vliegt met korte overstap op de luchthaven van de hoofdstad van Finland, Helsinki, door naar de kleine luchthaven van Oulu. Daar wordt u opgewacht en stapt u in de luxe touringcar die u in een rit van ca. 110 minuten door de witte wonderlandschappen van Lapland naar het kleinschalige winterresort Iso Syöte brengt. Vanwege haar ligging boven op een heuvel wordt u omringd door een sprookjesachtig decor van met een dikke laag sneeuw bedekte bomen. Na de check-in in het door u gekozen verblijf schuift u aan voor uw eerste diner, bereidt van zoveel mogelijk lokale producten. Het restaurant biedt panoramische uitzichten over de omgeving en u kijkt zo de Poolnacht in. Met enig geluk laat het Noorderlicht zich op de eerste avond al direct in al haar schoonheid zien!

Dag 2. Ontmoet de rendieren

U beleeft een actieve dag in Lapland vandaag. Na heerlijk van het uitgebreide Scandinavische ontbijtbuffet te hebben genoten hijst u zich in uw thermokleding voor een bezoek aan een traditionele Sámi rendierhoeder waar u per sneeuwscooter naar toe rijdt. Na een gedegen uitleg over hoe de sneeuwscooter te besturen rijdt u per tweetal een sneeuwscooter. De één bestuurt de sneeuwscooter terwijl de ander achterop zit om zo de mooiste filmpjes en foto’s te maken. De sneeuwscootertocht gaat door besneeuwde wouden en over met een dikke laag ijs bedekte meren. Aangekomen bij de Lapse Kota (hut) wordt u begroet door de rendierhoeder. De Sámi, de oorspronkelijke bewoners van Lapland, zijn onlosmakelijk verbonden met deze fascinerende dieren en de rendierhoeder vertelt u dan ook allerlei interessante weetjes over de rendieren en het hoeden van deze dieren. U heeft de kans een korte rit per slee achter een rendier te maken, met de dieren op de foto te gaan en ze te voeren. Bij het vuur in de Kota wordt u getrakteerd op boven het voor bereide koffie/thee en een Laps lekkernij. Vervolgens wordt het tijd om afscheid te nemen van de rendierhoeder en rijdt u terug naar Iso Syöte. In de middag trekt u de sneeuwschoenen aan voor een wandeling door een sprookjesachtig decor van met sneeuw bedekte bomen. De sneeuwschoenen zult u nodig hebben om niet tot ver boven uw knieën in de sneeuw weg te zakken. Tijdens een stop onderweg wordt u door de gids voorzien van warme drank en koekjes. Deze wandeling door de meest zuivere lucht van de EU zal diepe indruk op u maken. Het diner vanavond zal weer uitstekend smaken en ongetwijfeld houdt u het Noorderlicht in de gaten alvorens u gaat slapen.

Tegen een toeslag van € 45,= per persoon heeft u een sneeuwscooter voor alleengebruik ter beschikking.

Dag 3. Een lange sneeuwscootersafari

Na van het smakelijke ontbijt gesmuld te hebben maakt u zich op voor een enerverende, avontuurlijke rit per sneeuwscooter door de omgeving. Gisteren heeft u mogen proeven hoe het is om per sneeuwscooter door de witte Arctische natuur te rijden maar vandaag is het tijd voor het échte werk. U rijdt alleen op een sneeuwscooter zodat u optimaal van het sneeuwscooteren kunt genieten. Een rit van ca. 80 kilometer door verschillende terreintypes voert u diep de wildernis in. De glooiende tracks lopen heuvel op, heuvel af en leiden u door besneeuwde wouden. Al snel zult u zich een ervaren bestuurder voelen en stuurt u de sneeuwscooter behendig door de glooiende tracks. U stopt onderweg voor het maken van een kampvuur. De outdoor-lunch zal u goed smaken en u voorzien voor de benodigde energie voor de terugweg. In de loop van de middag keert u terug en zult u uw spieren willen verwennen in de warme sauna alvorens u aanschuift voor weer een smaakvol diner. Met enig geluk kleurt vanavond het Noorderlicht de hemel boven Iso Söyte.

Dag 4. Op stap met de husky's

Voor velen komt vandaag een droom uit want na het heerlijke ontbijt maakt u kennis met de dolenthousiaste husky's. U wordt naar de lokale huskyfarm gebracht waar u met een oorverdovend geblaf door de husky’s wordt verwelkomd. De super sociale viervoeters vinden het heerlijk om geaaid te worden en gaan maar wat graag met u op de foto. De huskyhouder zal u uitleggen hoe u de slee moet besturen en uiteraard beantwoordt hij graag al uw vragen over zijn honden. Per tweeën rijdt u een slee; de een zit in de slee en de ander staat achter op de glij-ijzers. Geniet onderweg van de stilte van de voorbijglijdende winterlandschappen. Onderweg kan er gewisseld worden. Vergeet uw camera niet voor het maken van onvergetelijke plaatjes tijdens de circa 25 kilometer lange tocht. Na afloop van de safari wordt u op de huskyfarm getrakteerd op een smaakvolle lunch. In de loop van de middag keert u terug naar het resort. Maak weer gebruik van de sauna om uw spieren te verwennen voordat u weer aanschuift voor een overheerlijk diner. De avond heeft u vrij te besteden en met enig geluk brengt u veel tijd buiten door om het Noorderlicht te aanschouwen.

Dag 5. Afscheid van Lapland

Het is helaas alweer tijd om te vertrekken. Na het ontbijt wordt u teruggebracht naar het vliegveld en neemt u afscheid van Lapland. Met een koffer vol prachtige herinneringen stapt u op uw vlucht, via Helsinki, terug naar huis. Er is een einde gekomen aan uw fantastische Lapland ervaring.
