View this post on Instagram A post shared by Theatre Washington (@theatrewash)

The district’s 2024 Theatre Week will be taking place from September 26th to October 13th, which is an event that every local should want to support.

Tickets are available at a range of prices in an effort to minimize the economic barriers that tend to exist in the world of theatre.

The informational exhibit is perfect for all audiences ranging from educational family outings to culturally enriching date nights!

Unfortunately, though, the Tutankhamun ‘Tomb and Treasures’ exhibit will be leaving D.C. after the end of October and be moving elsewhere.

17. Visit Dopamine Land for a dose of fun before it closes at the end of September

ball pit at Dopamine Land

One of the most incredible interactive exhibits that we can’t recommend enough for a fun evening plan for all audiences, Dopamine Land is set to close and move to another city on September 29th.

With only a few weeks left for Washingtonians to check it out before it leaves for good, this event is not one you want to miss this Fall!

18. Treat someone to the most intimate dining experience in the district – Dining in the Dark

Dining in the Dark

Dining in the Dark is one of the most exciting and unique culinary experiences that you can have in the capital city!

The secret menu is made taking your culinary preferences in mind when you purchase your spot, but the food and drinks seem to always be fantastic.

As a result this experience ultimately ends up being one of the most fun, hilarious, and memorable dining experiences you can have with someone you care about.

19. Take a trip to some of the most beautiful spots in the DMV to see the Fall foliage at its peak

Autumn landscape of the National Capitol Columns in the US National Arboretum in Washington, DC.

You don’t have to drive hours away from the district to get some incredible views of the leaves changing color this Fall, so we’ve taken the opportunity to list a few of our favorite spots to see the Fall foliage – some close, and some a little further away from the district.

20. Head to Luray Cavern to tour the biggest caverns system in the eastern United States

Luray Cavern Great Stalacpipe Organ

This Fall is the perfect time to venture out west toward Luray Cavern, the largest cavern system in the eastern United States!

The incredible natural sight is well worth the 1.5-hour drive from D.C. to Luray, Virginia to see the incredible underground formations.

As a bonus, just a short drive away from the Caverns is also Shenandoah National Park, which is another great spot to see the full spectrum of colors that the Fall foliage has to offer!

Two Top Chefs Join D.C.’s Membership-Only Wine Cave

Culinary vets Scott Drewno and Danny Lee take over the menu at West End’s ritzy WineLair

D.C. chefs Scott Drewno and Danny Lee, the founders of critically acclaimed Anju and Chinese-Korean counter ChiKo , just added a surprise new project to their plate this month. Oenophiles who belong to West End’s wine vault-slash-bar can now pair its liquid loot with a full food menu from the well-known culinary duo.

Situated next to the Ritz-Carlton, the snazzy social club features a fancy full bar and lounge areas, a climate-controlled wine cellar, and (insured) lockers for safekeeping members’ rare and pricey bottles, among other amenities for its posh clientele ( 1120 22nd Street NW) . A friend-of-a-friend introduced Drewno and Lee to WineLair’s local team this year, and a consulting partnership quickly fell into place from there. “They wanted people to not just drink and have bites but also have a full meal,” says Drewno.

The new gig brings Drewno back to his fine dining days at the long-closed Source by Wolfgang Puck. In a full-circle moment, some of his former regulars are now members. “It’s a beautiful and great location — and we love the idea of pairing food with wine,” he says.

WineLair, the American branch of the German-based WineBank, unveiled its first location outside of Europe in 2020 during the dawn of the pandemic. West End chef Ris Lacoste briefly helmed the kitchen to start, but a bonafide food program never really got off the ground until now.

washington dc wine tour

The chefs work with WineLair’s on-site sommeliers to create a complimentary menu that’ll rotate with the season. Members are welcomed with an amuse bouche and can order off the a la carte menu from there.

Starters under their watch include a silky corn soup with basil oil and jumbo shrimp cocktail served with homemade horseradish — “some stuff that was already in play that we use our recipes for,” says Lee. Members also get to sample some dishes they’re best known for around town. (“We can’t have a menu without dumplings, of course,” says Lee, who runs D.C.’s dumpling standard-bearer Mandu .) WineLair’s versions are stuffed with luxe lobster.

Mains include “fish” (tempura shrimp) and chips with a yuzu tartar sauce; roasted tomato orzo; and beef Bourguignon built with prime short rib and potato puree. “The kitchen is small but we can always make it work — there’s everything we need,” says Lee.

As a wine bar, charcuterie is obviously a big component. Cured meats from Fra’ Mani — the gourmet Italian purveyor owned by Chez Panisse alum Paul Bertolli — join a rotating list of imported cheeses. And when in Rome, there’s obviously some excessive splurges too. A bottle of Krug Grande Cuvée Brut 169th Edition NV paired with bottomless fries and uppity aiolis costs $250.

washington dc wine tour

Pricey membership clubs with food as a focus are on the rise around town. Ned’s Club Washington D.C. , an elite brand birthed by two Soho House bigwigs in London, debuts soon near the White House with two restaurants that aren’t open to the public.

WineBank was founded in 2009 by Christian Ress, the owner of Germany’s historic Balthasar Ress vineyards. Along with invites to private tastings and events, U.S. club members are automatically granted access to the brand’s opulent locations across Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. D.C. members pay a five-figure initiation fee, monthly dues, and have to hit a minimum food and drink spend each quarter. WineLair fields requests for tours in order to apply.

washington dc wine tour

Membership perks also include access to rare sips from around the world. For a recent event spotlighting vintage Moët, Drewno and Lee decided cheffed-up chicken nuggets should be the base for caviar. “We have creative freedom to cook whatever we want,” says Lee.

ChiKo, which is part of their fast-growing Fried Rice Collective portfolio, maintains four locations around the DMV (plus one in San Diego). The 7-year-old Capitol Hill original that started it all recently revived its own tasting menu format (with wine pairings) at its kitchen counter.

7 Brilliant Washington DC Distilleries to Check out

W ashington, D.C. is a city steeped in boozy history. In the last decade, the city has not only paved a beer and wine footprint, but locally distilled spirits are residing on local restaurant cocktail menus and liquor store shelves.

Whiskey, rum, vodka, and gin barely scratch the surface, proving that not everyone in D.C. works for the government.

Leave it to the Nation’s Capitol to lead a distillery movement of post-prohibition liberation, social activism, and melting pot portraiture.

Northwest Ivy City, lovingly dubbed the ‘distillery row of D.C.,’ accommodates Washington, D.C.’s growing dedication to locally distilled spirits. Between distillery gardens, bars, tastings, and tours, Washingtonians can enjoy a shared affection for craft spirits and a fabulous cocktail culture.

Best Washington DC Distilleries That You Should Visit

Green hat distillery.

  • Address: 1832 Fenwick St NE, Washington, DC 20002
  • Bar and Gin Garden hours: Saturdays 12pm-8pm, Sunday 1pm-6pm
  • Tours: Limited tours and guided tastings available, visit Green Hat Distillery website to book a tour

The Green Hat Distillery origin story is captivating, humorous, and the most ‘DC’ booze story imaginable.

A legendary 1920’s D.C. figure, The Man in The Green Hat delivered the outlawed ‘demon drink’ to Capitol Hill offices and lawmakers during America’s prohibition. Years later, Green Hat became the first local distillery to serve DC after prohibition ended.

Green Hat Distillery pays tribute to this Capitol Hill icon with four premium gin varieties. Tours can be booked online for an inside look at the Ivy City location or visit the Green Hat Bar and Gin Garden for creative gin cocktails on Saturday and Sunday.

Schneider’s—Capitol Hill’s resident liquor store—sells Green Hat Gin that sits just blocks away from the 1920’s action. Washington DC bars also captivate the botanicals of this bottled history buff in cocktail abundance.

Thrashers Rum Distillery and Potomac Distilling Company

  • Address: 1130 Maine Ave SW, Washington, DC 20024 (Directly under Tiki TNT Rum Bar)
  • Tours: Tuesday-Saturday 10am-5pm

Native to District Wharf’s Potomac River location, Thrasher’s Rum Distillery sits underneath the popular Wharf Tiki TNT Rum Bar hangout. Head rum distiller Todd Thrasher honors Guyanese-style rum, taking inspiration from South Pacific notes of caramelized molasses to inform a unique English Caribbean rum variety.

Scenic views of the river feature alongside the playful rum cocktails at Tiki TNT’s multilevel bar, but tastings and tours run 10am-5pm Tuesday through Saturday every half hour on the the half hour for those who want a behind-the-scenes look into metropolitan rum distilling.

Email [email protected] to book a tour, and upon arrival, look for the Thrasher’s Rum smokestack and double doors to start the tour of this rum distillery in DC.

Gold, white, spiced and green-spiced rum are for sale at the distillery.

Cotton and Reed

  • Address: 1330 5th St NE, Washington, DC 20002 (Union Market)
  • Tasting Room Hours: Monday-Thursday 4-12pm, Friday 4pm-2am, Saturday 12pm-2am, Sunday 12-10pm
  • Tours: Two tours conducted every Saturday at 12:30pm and 1:30pm.

As DC’s first rum distillery, Cotton and Reed encapsulate’s America’s melting pot mentality with rum inspired from around the world, merging distinct rum styles into a one-of-a-kind identity. Both tropical and English influence and a high distillation proof maintains a ‘light’ and ‘mojito-able’ final product. Cotton and Reed is not just a mover and shaker for the future of rum in Washington DC, but for the whole of America.

Forty-five minute distillery tours are held twice a day every Saturday and casual tasting room options include an indoor rum bar and outdoor ‘streatery’ patio. Tasting menu items range from ‘light and fizz’ and ‘boozy’ to ‘hot’, ‘shaken’, and ‘slushie’.

Republic Restoratives Distillery

  • Address: 1369 New York Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002
  • Hours: Pick-up only at this time from 11am-5pm every day

Women owned, crowdfunded, and intentionally ‘disruptive’, Republic Restoratives Distillery is pushing the boundaries and breaking the traditional American spirit mold. Inclusivity is a cornerstone of the Republic Restoratives narrative, where traditions are broken in the best way possible and diversity is valued above all except the quality of spirits.

The variety is vast at Republic Restoratives, covering all the spirit bases…bourbon, apple brandy, vodka, rye whiskey, and ‘madam’ whiskey that celebrates the first female, black, and South Asian Vice President Kamala Harris. The tasting room is currently closed, but patrons can pick up all bottled spirits for at-home consumption.

Don Ciccio & Figli’s

  • Address: 1907 Fairview Ave NE, Washington, DC 20002
  • Tasting room and Bar Sirenis hours: Saturday 1pm-8pm

The origin of this Washington DC distillery starts nearly two centuries ago in the Italian town of Atrani on the Amalfi Coast. Here, Amalfi native Vincenzo curated a superb collection of Italian liqueur recipes, including Amaro.

After multiple reinstatements of Vincenzo’s magical touch, Washington DC welcomed Don Ciccio & Figli’s in 2012, where Italian herbal liqueurs are handcrafted in small batches. Bitters range from ‘beautifully bitter’ to ‘seductively sweet’ and cordials merge sweet, fresh, and herbaceous qualities.

The Ivy City tasting room is open on Saturdays from 1pm to 8pm with limited seating and the Bar Sirenis serves Amalfi-inspired cocktails on the Bella Vista patio and indoor lounge, keeping to the Don Ciccio & Figli’s motto…‘born in Italy, reborn in the USA’.

Founding Spirits Distillery

  • Address: 600 Massachusetts Ave NW, Washington, DC 20001
  • Hours: 7am-10pm
  • Spirits available at Farmers & Distillers and it’s sister restaurants

The Founding Farmers restaurant family is a household name for many DC families. But more recently, the dining empire expanded the ‘source-matters mission’ to include spirits when they opened a small batch distillery in 2016. The small distillery is housed inside one of many Founding Farmer restaurants, Farmers & Distillers.

As a farmer owned distillery, ingredient quality and farmer loyalty is at the heart of this small yet impactful award winning DC distillery.

Sample the Founding Spirits’ selection of vodka, dry gin, bourbon, and American Amaro at the on-site distillery at Farmers & Distillers or at any sibling restaurant ( Founding Farmers and Farmers Fishers Bakers ).

George Washington’s Distillery & Grist MIll

  • Address: 5513 Mount Vernon Memorial Hwy, Alexandria, VA 22309 (2.7 miles from Mount Vernon main entrance)
  • Tours: Saturday & Sunday, open April-October (Admission by tour only)

When America was only a wee baby, George Washington’s Distillery was one of the largest whiskey distilleries in Washington DC… and the world, producing almost 11,000 gallons in 1799.

Today, the small-scale distillery continues to operate and yield drinkable spirit batches of both aged and unaged varieties true to the traditional 18th century model.

Visitors can tour the Mount Vernon distillery from April to October and learn more about George Washington and Farm Manager James Anderson’s distillery endeavors. George Washington’s rye whiskey, straight rye whiskey, and rum, as well as apple and peach brandy, are available for purchase onsite.

Chacho Spirits

  • Address: Chacho Bar and Distillery, 6031 Kansas Ave NW, Washington, DC 20011
  • Tasting room hours: Saturday, 2pm-10pm (Tours: 3:30 pm, 5:00 pm, and 6:30 pm)

The main product of Chacho mixes South American cane sugar with natural jalapeño flavors, creating traditional style “aguardiente” liquor found in Colombia, but with a kick.

80+ Things to Do This September 2024 in Washington, DC

No matter your genre preference – you can be super into jazz, want to explore go-go, rock a punk-inspired get-up or strive to be the ultimate Swiftie – DC offers a range of musical experiences that can take your visit to the next level. We’ve built out a music-focused itinerary that will allow you to maximize your time, from browsing records to learning musical history to taking in an epic show at one of DC’s many venues and concert halls .

Note: The order of the itinerary below is based on proximity and convenience. Make sure to check the upcoming schedules at DC’s music venues as you plan your trip. Fortunately, the city is walkable and easily traversable by Metro, Uber or taxi.

Som Records

You’re likely to always be in search of a cool new (or used) LP if you’re in DC to check out the music scene. There are lots of record stores in the city ; two longtime standouts are Smash! Records in Adams Morgan and Som Records on 14th Street NW. Take an afternoon walk and scope out the awesome selection in both (they’re only 15-20 minutes from each other).

9:30 Club

9:30 Club ©John Shore

At the forefront of the city’s music scene since its inception, attending a show at 9:30 Club is a must to enjoy the full DC experience. Since moving to its current location in 1996, world famous acts like Bob Dylan, The Beastie Boys and Radiohead have graced its stage. The calendar always includes a righteous mix of established acts, emerging stars and indie darlings.

Located inside a former neoclassical church, The Line DC is home to the Half Moon Radio broadcast; its stylish digs make for an ideal stay for a music fan. The Omni Shoreham Hotel is a part of music history: The Beatles stayed there when they were in DC for their first full live concert on American soil.

Exterior of National Portrait Gallery

Over in Brightwood Park, you can add to your jazz, soul, R&B, funk and go-go collection with a visit to Home Rule Records . Expect heavy drums to be blaring from the speaker. Home Rule also hosts a music festival and record fair each year.

Don’t skip the National Portrait Gallery , where, sprinkled throughout its special and permanent exhibits, you will find legends of American music and the country’s various cultural stages.

The Anthem during a concert

Check out a show at a venue with deep DC roots: Black Cat is a 14th Street institution for both rising and established independent artists, its brick façade concealing one of the best soundstages in the city; Blues Alley in Georgetown is a jazz supper club founded in 1965 with a vibe you won’t find anywhere else. While it’s only been open a few years, the 6,000-seat mecca that is The Anthem has already molded memories for thousands of concertgoers at The Wharf (you can also check out acts at the nearby Union Stage and Pearl Street Warehouse ).

Your musical journey can continue with the amenities at Eaton DC . In-room turntables, R&B yoga, a rooftop music venue and sound healing experiences are all available at one of DC’s coolest hotels.

NMAAHC's Musical Crossroad exhibit

National Museum of African American History and Culture ©Alan Karchmer

Secure timed passes to the marvel of a museum that is the National Museum of African American History and Culture . The Culture Galleries will be of particular interest to music fans; standout artifacts include Chuck Berry’s Cadillac and Parliament Funkadelic’s Mothership (both found in Musical Crossroads ). After this dose of musical history, head over to the Shaw neighborhood and pay a visit to DC’s newest record store, Decibel Music .

Yours Truly DC

Yours Truly DC

Shaw is also home to the historic Howard Theatre , a hub for jazz musicians during DC’s “Black Broadway” days. Now, the building is home to a state-of-the-art venue that hosts a full spectrum of performers throughout the year. In contrast to one of the city’s oldest venues, there’s the Atlantis , the District’s newest, 450-capacity concert hall located adjacent to the 9:30 Club and opened in style by local rocker Dave Grohl.

Conclude the evening with a stay at Yours Truly DC , perhaps DC’s most music-centric hotel. Upon request, you’ll be granted an in-room music library and record player, meaning you can listen to the LPs you’ve picked during your trip.
