ms Zuiderdam Review and Ship Tour

by Prof. Cruise · Published September 28, 2023 · Updated September 28, 2023

Four photos of the Zuiderdam with text that reads: ms Zuiderdam Ship Tour and Review

Introduction

Three bits of necessary background before I jump into the particulars of the Zuiderdam. First, despite having sailed on her previously (on a 10-night Sea of Cortez itinerary over Christmas in 2021), I still embarked on this second sailing not knowing how to pronounce her name. And then I disembarked another 7 nights later still not knowing how to pronounce her name. Zoy-der-dam?  Zoo-der-dam?  Zwee-der-dam? Zie-der-dam?

Second, in the spirit of full disclosure, I was invited on this cruise by Holland America as a member of the press (clearly Holland America’s definition of press is looser than the average first-grader’s two front teeth) and didn’t pay for my cruise fare. However, I’ll be reviewing Z…whatever… just as I would any other ship, highlighting both the things I loved about her and things that missed the mark for me.

Third, I brought along Mama Cruise as my plus one and we celebrated her 75th birthday onboard (it’s become a tradition for us to celebrate her birthday on a cruise). So I’ll be infusing this review with some of her perspectives as well.

ms Zuiderdam: Just the Facts (sort of)

A photo of the front half of the Zuiderdam docked at port.

One of four Vista-class Holland America ships, ms Zuiderdam’s maiden voyage was in 2002, making her just over 20 years old. That’s around 100 in cruise ship years which, as it happens, is also the average age of passengers onboard Holland America cruises (that’s both a joke and a deviation from the facts, if only a slight one). She did receive a facelift and a new wardrobe from Chico’s in 2017 (called a “refurbishment” in cruise lingo), so she looks a lot younger from a distance. Over video chat. With a poor connection. Again, I kid. She’s a gorgeous ship and has somehow managed to maintain her petite figure (with just 11 decks available to passengers, and a capacity of 2,272 guests and 842 crew) despite being fed multiple semi-trucks worth of food every week or so. Before I get into all the things I loved about her, here’s a complete ship tour (be sure to subscribe to my free YouTube channel so you don’t miss any of my Holland America content):

Things I Loved about the Zuiderdam

Ship size and layout.

I consider ms Zuiderdam a medium sized ship. She’s not so small that you discover to your horror that the group of fellow passengers who caught you testing out a seasick bag only to discover it was not, in fact, large enough to contain the three martinis and six courses you consumed before you started feeling queasy represent 100% of your fellow passengers onboard and that every time one of them sees you, they ask how you’re feeling and make unsolicited dietary suggestions. AND she’s not so large as to essentially be the Mall of America set upon a hull and floated out to sea (my personal vision of hell, as it happens). No, she’s juuuuuust right. She’s also extremely easy to navigate with the exception of deck 10 which doesn’t extend over the entire length of the ship (it will take you a few days to figure out that the Crow’s Nest can only be accessed via the forward elevators/stairs and Club HAL can only be accessed via the mid-ship elevators/stairs).

The new library onboard the Zuiderdam

My mom’s a former children’s librarian who has been a member of the same book club for approximately 75 of her 75 years. And I stayed in school for 9.5 years after high school so I could just read all day instead of getting a real job. So it should come as no surprise that we both love the new libraries that have popped up on HAL ships over the past year or so. The one on the Zuiderdam was a welcome addition since my first sailing on her in December of 2021. There was a huge selection of popular books in nearly every genre available (no checkout process necessary – just borrow them and return before debarkation) and the only challenging aspect of the whole experience for mom was culling her giant stack of initial selections down to something reasonable to get through in seven days. Kudos to HAL for adding libraries when so many lines have removed them.

Promenade Deck

The Promenade deck on the Zuiderdam.

Those who read my Westerdam review may recall a reference to the ankle weights I use to humiliate my kid at the grocery store. Well they made an appearance on the outdoor promenade deck on the Zuiderdam as I attempted to burn off .00000001% of the calories I consumed each day.

A photo of Prof. Cruises's legs with black ankle weights.

Sometimes I’d walk a leisurely lap around the wide, wraparound outdoor promenade deck slower than a sloth on sedatives and sometimes I’d just recline in one of the padded loungers and do two leg raises before the hypnotic ocean sounds and minimal exertion knocked me right out into blissful slumber. There’s probably an unsanctioned YouTube video out there taken by one of my shipmates depicting a middle-aged woman snoring up a lounger in unflattering ankle weights with caption: “Don’t believe what they say about Holland America cruises being boring.” If so, it’s definitely not me [insert Pinocchio emoji].

But seriously, I love a wide wraparound promenade deck with comfortable seating options for walking and relaxing close to the water and the one on the Zuiderdam can’t be beat!

Crow’s Nest

A photo of the Crow's Nest on the Zuiderdam.

POV: I do NOT associate the word “nest” with relaxation. I’m a mom. I built the nest. I birthed the creature living in there. And I ‘m constantly feeding it and trying to keep it alive until it learns to fly (or finally goes off to college) so I can surrender said nest to the wind and embark on b2b2b2b2b2death cruises. But boy oh boy, on the Zuiderdam I experienced what it’s like to be in the nest, having my every want and need catered to (of course my mother felt it necessary to remind me that I lived 18+ years of pampered life in the nest she build, but that was a loooong time ago).

Two hour nap in a comfy chair with my feet up between sipping cocktails while gazing out at the ocean? Done! Curling up with a good book? Done! Meeting up with a friend or loved one for a board game or to work on a puzzle together? Done! Having someone prepare my morning latte while I watch the sunrise? Done! This gorgeous and versatile space offered it all and was one of my favorite spots onboard.

Mom loved it too and regularly headed up there to relax while reflecting on the beauty of…karma (I was a strong-willed kid and now I have a strong-willed kid) and to speed read (seriously, I don’t know how she got through so many books on our sailing) her library books so she could make it through her towering stack before debarkation.

Special Little Touches

A fruit crisp on a Delft plate on the Zuiderdam

Did you initially book a Holland America cruise because you heard others comment about the “little touches” that distinguish Holland America from other lines? No? Just me? In any case, some of the special little touches I love on Holland America include the gorgeous fresh flowers, blue and white Royal Delft china used in the dining rooms, and complimentary Elemis bath products provided in every cabin category. And if you’re brave enough to use a cruise ship public restroom and smart enough to scrub your hands down to the subcutaneous fat layer after, you can wipe off the water and blood with the lovely little hand towels provided as an alternative to rough paper towels in every bathroom.

Some prefer to completely disconnect on a cruise, which I both understand and (often) envy. But many have family and work obligations that require they stay connected at sea. Or just demanding egos (gotta get those Instagram likes). And because I’m a Professor of Cruising and this was a press trip for me, I needed access to fast, reliable internet. I was “gifted” a multi-device internet plan which normally costs around $230 for a 7-night cruise. This is actually far less than what you’d pay for a similar plan on several other lines and it offered the fastest, most reliable internet I’ve ever experienced on a cruise ship. I was able to video chat and stream and post regularly to social media and my website. Super fast with no down time.

Billboard Onboard

Zach and Emma performing at Billboard Onboard on the Zuiderdam.

Zach and Emma, the piano bar entertainers at Billboard Onboard, were a highlight of our cruise. They were both gifted and highly trained vocalists and pianists and, as a couple in real life, it was fun to watch the chemistry between them. If nothing else, show up to see what Zach is wearing. He rocked some gorgeous vintage clothing, jewelry, and headbands. Seriously, if they’re still on the Zuiderdam when you cruise, don’t miss them! They offered three sets each night with the final set being all requests (although, as usual, they didn’t choose either of my equally depressing and obscure requests – Fake Empire by The National and Exhile by Bon Iver and Taylor Swift).

Overall Food Quality and Port to Table Options

Let’s talk food!

A bowl of clams at dinner on the Zuiderdam.

The food quality, especially in the main dining room, was superb and we really loved the EXC Port to Table options like the Prince Edward Island mussels available at dinner and the French crepes (available the morning we were in Quebec City) at breakfast. On our excursion in PEI, we actually saw where the mussels were grown and harvested and then were offered them to eat at dinner that night. How cool is that!?! Here are the main dining room menus for breakfast (HAL has the best breakfast menu at sea, by FAR), lunch, and dinner we enjoyed on our sailing:

Holland America New England/Canada Menus

International Food

Eight years from now, as soon as I pretend to be sad at sending my kid off to college, I’ll be embarking on my first world cruise. In the meantime, I ate my way around the world on the Zuiderdam. I started with the international section on the breakfast menu (where the aloo masala and egg bhurji was a favorite of mine and mom enjoyed the full English breakfast and European cold breakfast plate), hit Japan, China, India, and Vietnam at lunch for some Sushi, noodle dishes, and curry and Italy for some pizza and made-to-order pasta, and especially enjoyed the Chile Rellenos from Mexico at dinner one evening which I ordered through room service (from the MDR menu) to eat on my balcony. Speaking of room service…

Room Service

There are some things in life that seem almost too good to be true, like cat cafes and free cruise ship room service in 2023. Nearly all non-luxury cruise lines have started charging an extra fee for most room service items, but not Holland America. An extensive room service menu is still offered AND for those new to Holland America, there are even “secret” room service menus in addition to the regular menu. See the Instagram reel I filmed about this on the Zuiderdam to find out about the secret menu options.

Breakfast Yogurt Bar

The yogurt bar at the breakfast buffet on the Zuiderdam.

The yogurt bar located in the buffet at breakfast offered a delicious selection of yogurt, fruit purees, and toppings (nuts, seeds, dried and fresh fruit, oats). I made myself a custom yogurt parfait each morning after the gym as part of a pre-breakfast while I waited for my mom to get ready. Now should that last sentence leave you with the impression that I’m healthy and disciplined on a cruise, well, keep reading before you accuse me of being completely fruity and nuts (see what I did there).

Sticky Buns

Three trays of sticky buns on the breakfast buffet on the Zuiderdam.

Sure you could take a pan of these these warm sticky buns topped with caramel and sliced almonds from the breakfast buffet and stick them directly to your butt for practically the same long-term effect, but it’s so much more satisfying to eat two of them with a latte from the Crow’s Nest every morning. They, along with all the other pastries, are baked fresh and from scratch each morning.

Beecher’s Mac and Cheese

A bowl of Beecher's Mac 'n Cheese on the Zuiderdam.

For comfort food, I went for something a little closer to home (like 2 blocks from my apartment in downtown Seattle): Beecher’s mac and cheese. Even though Beecher’s flagship store in Pike Place Market is within spitting (salivating) distance of my apartment, I love that Beecher’s cheese is featured on Holland America and, as usual, sought it out on the Zuiderdam. One of the best parts of Seattle, along for the ride (now if they’d just let me bring my dog, I’d never have a reason to go back home)!

A burger, some fries, and two containers of "Dive In sauce" from Dive In burgers on the Zuiderdam.

While the name of the Zuiderdam’s complimentary fast casual burger restaurant is much easier to pronounce than the name of the ship herself, there’s some dispute as to the meaning behind the name. Is it called “Dive In” due to its close proximity to the main pool on the Lido deck? Or is it because your extra crispy French fries will practically leap off your tray to “dive in” to the signature “dive in” sauce? OR is it because you can order your meal from Dive In via the Navigator app as you’re re-boarding the ship at port and have your meal ready to “dive into” as soon as you’re done dropping your stuff off at your cabin? Regardless of the original inspiration behind the name, it’s by far the best burger joint at sea by my estimation. And new to my sailing on the Zuiderdam were pre-prepared “grab and go” burgers and fries as an option. You could still order at the counter or on the app, but the grab and go option reduced the line and was much faster for those who wanted one of the popular menu items without needing any modifications.

Buffet Desserts

An ice cream cone being held up near the main pool on the Zuiderdam.

“Buffet” and “dessert” are my 2nd and 3rd favorite words in the English language. What’s my 1st favorite? Cruise, of course! Mainly BECAUSE of unlimited buffet desserts. But the quality of buffet dessert varies greatly depending on the cruise line and ship. Thankfully, the buffet desserts on the Zuiderdam were outstanding. Hard ice cream in waffle cones with a number of delicious toppings, homemade cookies, high-quality pre-plated cakes, cupcakes, pies, mousses, and fruit tarts.

And while the buffet on the Zuiderdam was missing one dessert I’ve enjoyed on other Vista class ships (more on that in a minute), one modified offering and one additional offering on the Zuiderdam more than made up for it. First, the signature bread pudding with vanilla sauce offered on all Holland America ships was self serve on the Zuiderdam (instead of being “by request” behind the ice cream counter) AND was nearly entirely void of raisins, the kryptonite of dessert (honestly, it’s one of the only things I can think of besides a hair or germy fingers to ruin a perfectly good buffet dessert). And second, there were warm fruit crisps served every day. Look (and I do mean look, they aren’t to be missed) for those two items near the Asian station (not with the rest of the buffet desserts) and be sure to top your fruit crisp with some vanilla ice cream!

Things I Didn’t Love about the Zuiderdam

Here are a few things I found disappointing on the Zuiderdam.

Daytime Programming

While we had a very port heavy itinerary with only one sea day, I was still surprised with the lack of quality daytime programming. No itinerary specific EXC talks, no movies, and no naturalist or local speakers brought on at port. All of those activities have been highlights of prior HAL cruises and their absence was both glaring and disappointing.

Main Theater Shows

Holland America falls short compared to other lines when it comes to evening shows in the main theater. On our sailing, 3 shows were performed by the Step One Dance Company (a six person contemporary dance company accompanied by pre-recorded music – no live vocalists or musicians), 2 shows by a guest comedian, and 2 shows performed by a guest pianist. Mom and I aren’t huge fans of comedy, so we skipped those two shows and while mom loved the pianist and we both found the Step One Dance Company talented and entertaining, the shows offered just didn’t provide enough variety or the quality we expect from evening cruise entertainment. And, once again, there was no Lincoln Center Stage performance (as was promised when HAL eliminated the smaller, intimate Lincoln Center Stage venue on all ships, including the Zuiderdam). This is one area I continually hear complaints about – even from the most loyal HAL cruisers.

Gym and Buffet Hours

These two are related. First, the gym on the Zuiderdam opened too late in the morning. There was always a huge line of people by the time it opened at 6am – which may seem pleeeenty early to those who shun, with equal intensity, cruise ship gyms and seeing anything but the back of their eyelids prior to 8am. But why close it at all? I’ve been on many ships with 24 hour gyms that can accommodate those who like to get their “workouts” (for me that means casually sitting on an exercise bike while watching Netflix on my iPad) over with early so they can arrive at the buffet exactly when it opens and stay until it closes, sadly, WAY too early at 8pm. Extending the hours at the gym and buffet would really go a long way in enabling my cruise overeating habit.

No Taco/Burrito Bar at Lunch

Two food related things were missing from the Zuiderdam that I’ve grown accustomed to on other ships in the same class. First, there was no self-serve taco/nacho bar located on the Lido deck near Dive In and second…

No Crepes at the Buffet

Crepes have been offered in the buffet on the two other Holland America ships of this same class I’ve sailed on (the Noordam and the Westerdam) AND they were offered on the Zuiderdam herself on my previous sailing. I looked back to my prior review to verify and sure enough:

A crew member onboard the Zuiderdam preparing a crepe on the buffet.

But there was no giant round thing hot enough to cook dessert in under two minutes on our ship. Normally the sunburned buns asleep on the lido deck loungers can be used in a pinch, but the retractable roof was stuck in a closed position on our sailing, so no one really hung out lounging (sleeping) by the pool.

Other Changes to the Zuiderdam since my Last Sailing

Change is inevitable and sometimes it’s for the better (like the format of muster drills on Holland America post Covid), but sometimes it leaves us waxing nostalgic for the Lincoln Center Stage (gone from the Zuiderdam since my last sailing), the B.B. Kings Blues Club (gone from the Zuiderdam since my last sailing), and BBC Earth programming and concerts (gone from the Zuiderdam since my last sailing). While I was disappointed in these changes and didn’t love everything about the Zuiderdam, would they prevent me from sailing on her again?

Would I sail on ms Zuiderdam again?

They say the third time’s the charm, but I don’t plan on stopping at just three cruises onboard the beautiful, friendly, delicious, relaxing Zuiderdam. No ship is perfect, but the Zuiderdam is still one of the best dam ships at sea and I’ll continue to cruise on her every chance I get. And I hope many of those cruises will be with this gal…

A photo of "Mama Cruise" at the Pinnacle Grill onboard the Zuiderdam.

whose actual 75th birthday is today (even though we celebrated early at Pinnacle Grill while we were together on the Zuiderdam). She’s the perfect cruise companion and for 75 years has been making the world a better place with her optimism, thoughtfulness, wisdom, humor, knowledge, listening ear, unconditional love, resilience, soft shoulder, and burps on command (made all the more delightful because you really don’t expect it from a decorous former librarian). I love you mom!

And with that…

Class Dismissed!

Happiest of Birthdays to you Mama Cruise 🥳 Although I rarely visit the gym on a cruise, I agree that 6 am is not early enough for a lot of folks. And when your ship skews to an older clientele, you know, the dinner at 5pm and bed at 8pm folks, it seems they are wide eyed and bushy tailed at 5 am. Example: my 83 year old father on our Alaska cruise 😬

Lol. I’m in my 40’s and am already a dinner at 5pm, bed at 8pm person. By my 80’s I’ll be hitting the gym at 2am, eating dinner at noon, and hitting the sack by 5. Ha!

Did I miss where you went on this 7 day cruise?

New England/Canada. Forgot to mention that in the review!

My experience with HAL came in December of 2021 on Koningsdam. SanDiego to the Mexican Riveria. All you said was accurate about our experience BUT we had a Taco Bar etc. The entertainment was weak and inconsistent. Comedy was quite good and the chamber music was excellent. There was limited daytime cruising activity except the 2 $15.00 per person martini making and drinking (5 recipes per tasting). That was fabulous! HAL is still at the top of my list but we are going on Celebrity in the spring-Sydney to Honolulu!

We will be on the Zuiderdam Oct 10 – Jan 3 for the Grand Africa and holiday cruise. I appreciate your up to date thoughts about the ship and experience. Just want to mention that when we were on the Volendam earlier this year for the Grand South America, we had a port talk for each port, and lots of enrichment talks and activities that are not on regular cruises. I also did a 12 day port intensive Regent cruise in June and there were no port talks at all. I suspect it depends on the itinerary these days. Can’t wait to claim a lounge chair on the promenade deck! They are truly two of the best things about both the Zuiderdam and Volendam! Thanks for the review!

Cruise Tips For Families & Single Cruisers

Things to Know Before You Cruise

Holland America’s Ms Zuiderdam: Cabin tips And Deck Recommendations

As a travel enthusiast, I’m always on the lookout for new adventures and exciting experiences. One of my recent trips was aboard Holland America’s MS Zuiderdam, a medium-sized ship that offers a range of cabin options and modern amenities. However, not all cabins are created equal, and it’s important to know which ones to choose to make the most of your cruise experience.

In this article, I’ll be sharing my personal cabin tips and deck recommendations for the MS Zuiderdam. Whether you’re a first-time cruiser or a seasoned traveler, these insights will help you navigate the ship with ease and make the most of your time onboard. From cabin size and features to deck locations and accessible rooms, I’ll provide all the information you need to plan your perfect cruise getaway.

So if you’re ready to embark on a journey of freedom and adventure, let’s dive in!

  • MS Zuiderdam has a variety of cabin options, including interior, ocean view, verandah, and suite options, as well as accessible and connecting rooms.
  • Cabins to avoid for those prone to seasickness are located on decks 8 and 10, while rooms directly above the World Stage and below the Lido pool and Sea View pool may be noisy.
  • The best decks for shielded noise are the Verandah Deck, Upper Verandah Deck, and Rotterdam Deck, although the best deck choice may depend on personal preferences.
  • Holland America MS Zuiderdam cabins to avoid are not listed, as preferences vary.

Ship Description

So, the MS Zuiderdam is a beautiful medium-sized ship in the Holland America fleet that boasts modern stabilizers, making it a stable and comfortable ride.

One of my favorite parts about this ship is the World Stage. It’s a fantastic theatre that offers top-notch entertainment.

With 14 elevators/lifts, getting around the ship is a breeze. The Lido Deck on Deck 9 is a great place to relax and enjoy the views.

When it comes to dining options, the MS Zuiderdam offers a variety of choices to suit every taste and preference. From the elegant Pinnacle Grill to the casual Lido Market, there’s something for everyone.

The ship also has specialty dining options, including the Canaletto Italian restaurant and Tamarind, which serves Asian fusion cuisine.

Overall, the MS Zuiderdam is a well-appointed ship with plenty of amenities to keep guests entertained and comfortable throughout their voyage.

Cabin Options

When choosing a cabin on this ship, I discovered that the Verandah Staterooms tend to be larger than the Interior Staterooms, with some even accommodating up to 3 or 4 guests. These staterooms also include a bath, rather than just a shower, and have a private balcony for guests to enjoy the ocean views. Another option for larger groups is the Large Interior Staterooms, which can sleep up to 3 or 4 guests.

To help guests choose the best cabin for their needs, here is a table comparing the amenities and location of the different cabin options on the MS Zuiderdam:

With this information, guests can make an informed decision about their cabin location and amenities, whether they prioritize a view, a private balcony, or additional space and amenities.

Accessible Rooms

I found it important to research the accessible room options on the ship to ensure that all guests, regardless of mobility issues, can enjoy their time on the MS Zuiderdam.

The ship offers two categories of accessible rooms: Ambulatory Accessible and Fully Accessible. Ambulatory Accessible rooms are designed for guests who can walk short distances but may need assistance, while Fully Accessible rooms are designed for guests with more significant mobility issues, including those who use wheelchairs.

Both types of accessible rooms come with a range of amenities, including wider doors, grab bars, and roll-in showers. The location of accessible rooms is also important to consider.

For those who prefer being closer to the elevator, accessible rooms on Deck 5 are a great option, while those who prefer a quieter location can opt for accessible rooms on Deck 4.

Overall, the accessible room options on MS Zuiderdam demonstrate Holland America’s commitment to ensuring that all guests can enjoy their cruise experience to the fullest.

Connecting Rooms

Connecting staterooms can be a great option for families or groups traveling together, providing a sense of togetherness while still allowing for privacy when desired. However, it’s important to note that connecting rooms compromise soundproofing, which can be a downside for light sleepers or those seeking complete silence. The proximity of the rooms may also mean that noise from one room can easily travel to the other.

When it comes to the best connecting room options for families, it ultimately depends on the size of the group and their preferences. Interior connecting staterooms are a popular choice for larger families, as they can sleep up to eight guests. For those looking for a little more luxury, Verandah staterooms with connecting doors are available and offer the added bonus of a private balcony.

Overall, connecting staterooms can be a great way for families or groups to travel together while still maintaining some level of privacy and independence.

Cabin Size and Features

One thing I’ve noticed is that the size and features of cabins on a cruise ship can vary greatly, from small interior rooms to spacious suites with private balconies. On the MS Zuiderdam, cabins are labeled with a cabin grade and range from Interior cabins to Verandah Staterooms, Neptune Suites, Pinnacle Suites, and Signature Suites.

Here are some things to consider when comparing cabin layout, amenities, and pricing:

  • Interior cabins are the cheapest option but lack proper seating space.
  • Verandah Staterooms include a bath, rather than just a shower, and some are suitable for 3 or 4 guests.
  • Neptune Suites have aft-views but are more expensive.
  • Pinnacle Suites are the very best on the ship and offer additional perks like a personal concierge and complimentary laundry and dry-cleaning services.

When compared to other Holland America ships, the MS Zuiderdam has a variety of cabin options, with a greater emphasis on Verandah Staterooms and suites. However, it’s important to note that cabin size and amenities can vary within each category, so it’s worth doing some research and comparing different options before booking.

Obstructed View Staterooms

Now that we’ve talked about the different types of cabins available on the Holland America MS Zuiderdam, let’s discuss the pros and cons of choosing an ocean view stateroom with obstructed views.

These staterooms can be found on Deck 4 and have windows that are partially obstructed by lifeboats. The benefit of choosing these staterooms is that they are usually cheaper than regular ocean view staterooms. However, the downside is that the view may not be as clear as you would like it to be.

If you don’t mind spending a bit more money, you might want to consider booking an aft-view verandah stateroom. These rooms are located at the back of the ship and offer stunning views of the wake. They are sought-after by many passengers, so they tend to be more expensive than other types of staterooms. However, if you are willing to splurge, the experience can be well worth the extra cost.

Overall, whether you choose to book an obstructed view stateroom or an aft-view verandah stateroom, make sure to weigh the pros and cons carefully before making your final decision.

Rooms to Avoid for Seasickness

When I step onto a cruise ship, one of my biggest concerns is seasickness, which is why I always research which rooms to avoid.

On Holland America’s MS Zuiderdam, rooms that are more prone to motion sickness are located on Decks 8 and 10. Specifically, cabins 8101-8147 and 10001-10026 should be avoided if you’re susceptible to seasickness. These cabins are located at the front of the ship, where the motion is more pronounced.

To minimize the risk of seasickness, it’s important to choose the best location for your cabin. The lower decks, near the center of the ship, tend to experience less motion and are therefore ideal for those who are prone to seasickness.

Additionally, cabins with balconies provide fresh air and natural light, which can help alleviate symptoms of seasickness. Seasickness remedies such as ginger supplements, acupressure wristbands, and medications are also available on board.

By taking these precautions, you can enjoy your cruise on MS Zuiderdam without worrying about seasickness.

Noisy Rooms

To ensure a peaceful stay on board, it’s important to be aware of the noisier rooms on the ship. Rooms directly above the World Stage or below the Lido and Sea View pools can be particularly noisy due to loud music and crowds. Similarly, rooms next to elevators can be noisy due to congregating passengers.

However, there are ways to reduce noise and choose the best location for a quiet cabin. The Verandah Deck, Upper Verandah Deck, and Rotterdam Deck are the best decks for shielded noise. Additionally, cabins away from the ship’s common areas and entertainment venues can provide a peaceful environment.

By keeping these tips in mind when choosing a cabin on MS Zuiderdam, passengers can enjoy a quieter and more relaxing cruise experience.

Deck Recommendations

I highly recommend exploring the different decks on board MS Zuiderdam, as each one offers a unique experience, like diving into a treasure trove of hidden gems.

The best decks on MS Zuiderdam for shielded noise are the Verandah Deck, Upper Verandah Deck, and Rotterdam Deck. These decks are perfect for those who want to be close to the action but still have peace and quiet when they want it. The Verandah Deck is home to the ship’s most popular cabins, the Verandah Staterooms, which offer a private balcony perfect for watching the ocean go by. The Upper Verandah Deck is where you’ll find the ship’s fitness center and spa, as well as the Crow’s Nest lounge, which offers stunning views of the sea. Lastly, the Rotterdam Deck is the perfect place to relax and unwind, with its quiet nooks and crannies and beautiful artwork.

The best deck choice may depend on personal preferences such as proximity to the pool or susceptibility to seasickness. For those who prefer to be near the pool, the Lido Deck is the place to be. The Sea View Pool is located on this deck, and it’s the perfect place to soak up the sun and enjoy a refreshing drink.

However, if you’re prone to seasickness, it’s best to avoid the lower decks and opt for a cabin on one of the higher decks. No matter which deck you choose, MS Zuiderdam is sure to offer a memorable experience.

Rockland invites more cruise ships amid uncertainty

Many in this small seaside city look to Bar Harbor, where thousands of cruise ship passengers crowd the streets and sidewalks from spring through fall.

ROCKLAND — Local business owner Nate Luce has mixed feelings about the cruise ships that visit this small seaside city from late May through early October.

His ambivalence spiked this year after city officials increased the total number – from six to nine – of the larger cruise ships allowed to visit each September and October.

The city is preparing for a modest increase to seven big ships this fall, starting next week, but the number of passengers arriving in the harbor will increase dramatically to 21,832 – almost 50% more than last year, and four times the number of passengers the city saw in 2022.

City councilors unanimously endorsed the increase, encouraged by Maine tourism officials and the regional chamber of commerce. At the same time, just up the coast in Bar Harbor, a continuing battle to tamp down intense cruise ship traffic stands as a stark example of what Luce and others worry could happen here.

Like many in this city of nearly 7,000, Luce doesn’t mind the 30 or so smaller cruise ships with 100-200 guests that arrive spring through fall, like the American Eagle and the American Constitution docked in the harbor behind him.

Their passengers are “charming,” he said. They’re also liable to stop by Luce Spirits distillery and tasting room on Main Street and take home a bottle of his handcrafted gin, aquavit, absinthe or black walnut liqueur. Advertisement

But the larger ships, like the Zuiderdam arriving Sept. 8 with 1,900 guests, or the Celebrity Eclipse, arriving Sept. 9 with 3,000 guests, flood the waterfront and downtown with lanyard-wearing tourists eager buy a lobster roll, find a public toilet and see Mainers in their natural habitat.

“It leaves you feeling a little like a zoo animal,” said Luce, 36. “It definitely adds an order of chaos to Main Street.”

And while Maine tourism officials estimate that visitors spend $30 million annually across eight port communities, Luce and others question how much of that money comes from the larger cruise ships and who gets a slice of it.

“I have not seen any financial benefit from the larger cruise ships,” Luce said. “I try to keep an open mind. I get that tourists come and want to spend money. But the real focus for us is year-round business.”

Luce, like others, also admits to having a general “nervousness” about the potential “Bar Harborization” of Rockland.

“First and foremost, I’m concerned about the long-term health of the community,” he said. Advertisement

PRIME BUSINESS OPPORTUNITY

Connie Sawyer doesn’t want Rockland to become like Bar Harbor, either. She purchased the Seagull Cottage gift shops in Rockland and Camden in 2016, after working in banking for 25 years.

“I don’t want to end up like Bar Harbor, but I think what we’re getting for larger ship visits is a comfortable amount,” Sawyer said.

Bar Harbor businesses sue town over limit on cruise ship visitors

To bolster the success of the larger ship visits, Sawyer is trying to get more businesses to be open when they arrive. Four of the seven large ships visiting this fall will arrive on Sunday or Monday, when many shops and restaurants are closed.

“How can they enjoy coming to Rockland if half of the places are closed?” Sawyer said. “This is our busy season. Let’s support the cruise ships that are coming and give them a reason to come back.”

Sawyer’s measured support is justified, said Sarah Flink, executive director of CruiseMaine, a branch of the Maine Office of Tourism. Advertisement

“Over half of our cruisers to Maine are first-time visitors,” Flink said during a recent meeting with the Penobscot Bay Regional Chamber of Commerce. “That introduces brand new people who’ve never been to the state to fall in love with Maine (and) to go back and tell their friends and family how much they enjoyed it.”

Cruise visitors to Rockland are expected to quadruple in the next few years, from 5,010 in 2022 to a projected 22,356 in 2025, Flink said. The seven larger cruise ships expected this fall, including the Queen Mary 2 on Sept. 24, will bring in 17,400 passengers who will spend an estimated $1.9 million while here. Eight of the larger ships have scheduled coastal New England cruises in 2025 that include Rockland, according to portcall.com, an online schedule maintained by CruiseMaine.

While Sawyer hopes business owners unite to welcome the larger ships, some can’t see a benefit to staying open and catering to cruise passengers who aren’t likely to become customers. They also question the wider impacts of larger cruise ships on the community and the environment.

“It’s a lot of wear and tear on a small town,” said Emily Seymour, 32, co-owner of Curator Consignment on Main Street.

“Our business doesn’t benefit from cruise ship traffic,” she continued. “Some people are nice, but it’s a lot of people, and having those big ships here isn’t good for the harbor.”

Seymour agrees that some local businesses benefit because the cruise ships offer shore excursions for activities such as lobster bakes, harbor tours and even visits to the Owls Head Transportation Museum and the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens in Boothbay. Advertisement

“I know it benefits some businesses that I like,” she said, “but if they’re just buying trinkets made in China, who does it really benefit?”

Seymour said a family friend recently signed up to be an Uber driver so he can provide transportation to cruise passengers.

“So maybe he will benefit from it,” she said.

Revenue from visiting ships helps support harbor infrastructure improvements, as well as provides income for local retail establishments and restaurants.

BAR HARBOR’S EXAMPLE

Valerie Peacock understands why some Rockland residents are afraid to follow in Bar Harbor’s wake. Advertisement

“We sometimes joke that even we don’t want to be Bar Harbor,” said Peacock, chair of the Bar Harbor Town Council.

She also understands concerns about the impact of larger ships, which Bar Harbor has been struggling to cap for several years, including through lingering court battles .

“There is a scale to the larger ships that is overwhelming,” Peacock said. “You’ll see hundreds of people gathered in one spot. The smaller ships don’t do that.”

As cruise passenger numbers have increased, so have visitors to neighboring Acadia National Park, which attracted 3.88 million people in 2023 – 35% more than the annual average of 2.87 million visitors in the decade from 2010-2019, the National Park Service reported .

“The town is feeling overwhelmed in general,” Peacock continued. “We’re paying for trash removal and waste water treatment for millions of people, and the residents are footing the bill for a lot of it.”

This fall, Bar Harbor officials will try once again to control cruise ship impacts that have escalated over the last 30 years. The town drew roughly 270,000 cruise ship passengers in 2019, then experienced a post-pandemic rebound to 298,089 passengers in 2022. That November , town voters capped the number of passengers allowed ashore each day at 1,000 – a local ordinance that was challenged by a group of business owners, was upheld by a federal judge in February and is now being reviewed on appeal. Advertisement

Last month (Aug. 27), Bar Harbor councilors approved a cruise ship licensing proposal that will be on the Nov. 5 municipal ballot. It would cap daily passenger visitation at 3,200, with a yearly cap of 200,000. It also calls for 10 days without the larger ships in the harbor in both September and October, and no cruise ships would be allowed on the Fourth of July.

Bar Harbor can place a daily limit on cruise ship passengers, federal judge rules

Cruise ship companies would be required to sign five-year contracts subject to annual renewals after two years, Peacock said. From the third year on, councilors could vote to reduce or end passenger visits altogether – a decision that also would require a local referendum before taking effect.

The council approved the licensing scheme 6-1, and the cruise companies and dock owners already have signed contracts negotiated by town staff, Peacock said. It will be a go if voters agree and effectively end the current court battle.

She offers some advice to other communities looking to grow their economies in similar ways.

“Make sure you have a way to go back if it doesn’t work out,” she said. “We’re trying to undo something that built up over time. It’s really complicated and messy and it has cost a lot of community and staff time and energy and legal fees. It’s really hard to go backward.”

IT’S AN EXPERIMENT Advertisement

Jeff and Mary Heckman stepped off the American Eagle in Rockland in late August ready for a lobster bake and a harbor tour on a lobster boat. It was a bucket-list trip for the New Jersey couple, especially Jeff, a retired military serviceman with happy memories of camping in Maine as a Boy Scout.

They planned to eat all the lobster they could during their getaway. Before they boarded, they enjoyed a massive pair of lobster rolls served with fries and coleslaw at The Lobstah Buoy food truck in Bangor. The meal cost well over $100.

“It was a fatty,” Jeff Heckman said of his sandwich. “Best lobster rolls we ever had.”

In preparation to welcome more big ships and passengers, CruiseMaine and the Penobscot Bay chamber have formed Port Share Promise Midcoast to provide passenger support and a variety of welcoming services.

Portable toilets will be installed near the Rockland Public Landing, along with an information kiosk that will be staffed by paid and volunteer workers. Shuttle service will be available to passengers who want to visit Rockland’s breakwater or check out nearby Camden.

And Port Share Promise will provide an online feedback form to submit suggestions, concerns or complaints, including from locals who say they avoid the waterfront and downtown area when big cruise ships visit.

“The city has agreed to this and we know they’re coming,” said Shannon Landwehr, chamber president and CEO. “We want to manage and mitigate the impact of that influx for residents, businesses and visitors.”

Landwehr and others emphasize that only one additional big ship is visiting Rockland this year. And with each of the seven big ships, some passengers will stay on board, some will go on excursions and some will venture into town.

“About half of the passengers come ashore,” said Capt. Molly Eddy, Rockland’s harbor master. “It’s a small increase. It’s an experiment. If it doesn’t work out, we can always go back.”
