Beyoncé’s Formation World Tour: The Complete Breakdown of Her First Show
Beyoncé ’s performances can sometimes feel a bit serious, with her structured, synchronized dancers and no-one-wakes-up-like-that style. But at the kick-off of her Formation World Tour last night at Marlins Park in Miami, it seems like she finally found what it is that makes her smile. She appeared to have embraced the entirety of her intense nature, found the joy it it, then brought it to the stage. She was exact without seeming meticulous (which she obviously is), not to mention vulnerable and a little giddy. Instead of bowing before her, the Beyhive shook, swayed, and squealed alongside their queen.
The release of her new album, Lemonade , and its visual accompaniment just days before this arena show left no one in the dark about why Solange attacked Jay Z in that elevator. It seemed Bey wrote and sang her way through her grief to forgiveness in her marriage. And, as trite as it sounds, maybe that trial overcome was why the gleam in her eye was brighter than ever.
There was really no better way to open up in the Magic City than with living meme DJ Khaled presenting a receiving line of surprise guest rappers, each for a few minutes in the spotlight of an almost empty stadium: Rick Ross , 2 Chainz , Yo Gotti , Lil Wayne , Trick Daddy, Kent Jones, and finally, Future . Beyoncé, on the other hand, does only Beyoncé. She isn't the type to mess with surprises in the live setting very often (album releases are another story). This is her show, and she's who you came to see. Here’s a complete breakdown of what went down last night.
The Setlist
She sang a seamless 37-song mix starting with “ Formation ,” moving through a well-paced serving of Lemonade songs and forgotten early gems, ending with a string of popular, danceable bangers and a touching final few moments.
"Formation" "Sorry" "Bow Down / Tom Ford" "Run the World (Girls)" "Mine" "Baby Boy" "Hold Up" "Countdown" "Me, Myself and I" "Runnin'" (Naughty Boy song Bey appears on) "All Night" "Don’t Hurt Yourself" "Ring the Alarm" "Diva" "Flawless (Remix)" "Feeling Myself" "Yoncé" "7/11" "Drunk in Love" "Rocket" "Daddy Lessons" "Single Ladies (Put A Ring On It)" "Purple Rain" (Prince cover, obviously) "Crazy in Love/Bootylicious" "Naughty Girl" "Party" "Blow / Nasty Girl" "Sweet Dreams" (Eurythmics cover) "Sweet Dreams" (Bey's song) " Freedom " "Survivor" "End of Time/Grown Woman" "Halo"
The Performance
The lights shut off suddenly just minutes after the 8:30 p.m. start time and were replaced by a rotating rectangular cube screen that stood as high as the stadium. To the distinctive opening notes of “Formation,” the display showed a massive moving image of the singer with an orchid in her mouth that soon changed to artsy—but not screensaver-ish—nature scenes.
At first, it seemed like you could see her thighs gliding through the smoke as a tidy bevy of black-clad women in wide-brimmed hats sauntered out. Another mirror image gang suddenly appeared on the other side of the stage. It was there that the queen in all her glory was concealed amidst her subjects. “If you came to have a good time, say, ‘I slay!’” she instructed. The cheering crowd was a dark sea dotted with iPhone lights.
Next, a recording of Brenda Lee cooing “I’m Sorry” played as an explosion of blue and red light flooded the stage. “You all know this song. Try and help me sing,” Mrs. Carter announced before standing solo for her less apologetic “Sorry.” Her dancers came out, middle fingers blazing. Starting out boldly, this is the song that features the “better call Becky with the good hair” line currently ringing in everyone’s ears and rolling off their tongues. The intensity escalated and found expression in a concentrated group dance to “Flawless.” The feeling was heightened by bursts of fire reaching high into the clear night above the stage, as the Major Lazer sample at the heart of “Run the World (Girls)” pumped through the speakers. The mood swayed between personal and jovial, like when Sean Paul’s distinctive growl came through on “Baby Boy.” Things stayed cool and tropical with a clip of the Sister Nancy’s dancehall opus “Bam Bam” that transitioned into “Hold Up” while Beyoncé and her girls bounced their bottoms to the delight of the masses.
The show continued smoothly with “7/11” and “Feeling Myself,” plus clips from O.T. Genasis’ “Cut It” and D’Angelo’s “Untitled (How Does It Feel).” “Drunk in Love” secured the rapture and participation of the crowd, with the lyrics after “surfboardt” being recited especially loudly. Bey had her Madonna BDSM “Human Nature” moment when she appeared in a wooden box wearing a red pleather bodysuit and sang her Fifty Shades of Gray version of “Crazy in Love” before a “Bootylicious”/“Naughty Girl” mashup that indicated the night was winding down. She even had an Annie Lennox moment, impressively covering the Eurythmics’ “Sweet Dreams (Are Made of This).”
The whole time, Beyoncé smiled through her sweat. She glowed as she said a long goodbye, complete with salutes, laughter, and a childlike jump in the air. Something happened to Beyoncé between the release of “Formation” and Lemonade that softened her hardest edges, sweetened her mood. She seemed to have struck the balance between being “perfect” and being perfectly herself.
A massive, moving video cube was the backdrop for the stage, and it helped greatly in transforming a baseball stadium into an arena of magic. Much of the video shown came from Lemonade, so the show stuck close to Bey’s powerful visual themes and various symbolism surrounding black womanhood, accompanied during interludes by Warsan Shire’s spoken-word poetry that was adapted for Lemonade . One video showed the singer with a muzzle of diamonds and a razor emerging from her mouth, which she used to slice a bloodless cross on her giant tongue. The crowd cringed as Bey removed her priceless silencing device to ask, “Why can’t you see you’re the love of my life?” Damn.
There were a few more lighthearted moments within the visuals as well, including fan videos asking Bey “to just put out a new CD!”, home movies with Jay and Blue Ivy at play, and clips from Bey’s childhood performances.

The Costumes
Not one leg on that stage was covered, which was kind of amazing considering the style in which her dancers—nearly all black women—were dressed: They resembled gothic ice skaters in puffy, long-sleeved, and sequined bodysuits. Bey’s outfit changes—of which there were roughly six throughout the two-hour show—were varied but not all that more ostentatious than the looks her dancers sported: think bodysuits emblazoned with red and gold sequins in geometric shapes, a few more elegant looks.
The Stage Set-Up & Choreography
The brilliant set design had every single person in the stadium feeling like they were in the front row, by blowing up Beyoncé’s live image to the size of a building. Dancers were suspended and twirling from the ends of wires, with one writhing in a metal cube midair. Queen Bey had a Game of Thrones -style throne that rose from the guts of the stage. Plus, obviously, there were fireworks, pyrotechnics, and a buttload of confetti. The mostly synchronized choreography, however, was a little simpler. Elements of African dance and flapper moves were incorporated throughout.
The greatest design aspect was the catwalk, which snaked its way in an L-shape into the crowd on the field. Towards the end of the show, it turned out to have a conveyer belt on it, which moved the dancers smoothly into the audience before lowering into a pool of water, where the ladies danced to “Freedom.” The choreo’s tone was serious and powerful given the song’s strong Civil Rights message , but the way the dancers splashed as they marched and stomped was also playful—and just incredible to watch, visually.
Later, Beyoncé sat barefoot in this pool of water and dedicated the final song, “Halo,” to her family and her “beautiful husband.” She also thanked Prince for his “beautiful music,” and God for speaking through all of “his artists.”
The Fan Interaction
Beyoncé spent a bit of time alone on stage, making her way down the catwalk by herself as she reveled in the attention. She told a few stories. Earlier that day, Blue Ivy saw the stadium and asked her if she was going to work. This reminded Beyoncé of being a little girl and fantasizing about having a sold-out stadium tour. “I’m witnessing a dream come true tonight,” she said, truly touched. “I want to thank my Beyhive.” She basked in some low-key songs that showed off her chops, like “Me, Myself, and I,” saying, “Nobody is responsible for your happiness but you. And you always have yourself, so you are never alone.” As Bey is one to do live, she asked for a lot of “help” singing her songs, with some call-and-response on “All Night.”
For “Single Ladies,” Beyoncé brought up two crowd members. Of course these young women—one wearing an “unavailable” tee and the other sporting a white bodysuit and curly mohawk—knew all the choreography and performed with panache.
The Beyhive was dressed to impress but in an understated way suited for Miami’s spring weather. There were moms sporting Talbots, slender young boys in heels and mascara, tons of girls rocking bodysuits, and even more wearing shirts purchased at the relatively unimpressive merch table. It would have been better if the girl wearing her homemade “I was served lemons but made lemonade” jean jacket had been serving up her creation for sale. There were two exceptions to these surprisingly underwhelming merch offerings, however: a stylish tank with a line drawing of Bey flipping the bird (for a steep $45), and “Boycott Beyoncé” shirts, which referenced the proposed police boycott of the concert by the Miami Fraternal Order of Police. Despite the so-called anti-police message in Beyoncé’s Super Bowl Halftime Show, the boys in blue showed up for work and managed the packed stadium. The show was, in fact, not politically charged in the way her Super Bowl performance was.
There was a Prince tribute that involved the huge screen turning purple and “Purple Rain” playing over the speakers. It was more of an interlude than a proper tribute. During one of the two guitar solos, Beyoncé also shouted-out one of Prince’s earliest proteges, the woman-powered R&B trio Vanity 6, and rolled out a little of their biggest hit “Nasty Girl,” which she’s covered before .
Also, Bey’s former Destiny’s Child cohort Michelle Williams was in the house, though not on stage. This was Beyoncé’s solo victory lap, through and through.

Verified Fan registration is now open. Once you register, you'll be placed in a lottery system that determines which fans get invited to purchase tickets. Registration alone doesn't guarantee tickets. If you're selected, you'll get an access code the day before tickets go on sale. Everyone else will be placed on a waitlist. According to Live Nation, this process is intended to help Ticketmaster weed out the resellers and verify your account so that actual fans get priority to buy tickets.
Register for Tickets
Citi cardmembers will have a special Citi Presale after the Verified Fan process. Get more details here . Verizon will also offer an exclusive presale through their customer loyalty program Verizon Up .
Will Beyoncé be using Ticketmaster like Taylor Swift to sell tickets?
Yes, but given what happened with Taylor Swift's Eras tour (and the fact it led to Congressional hearings about Ticketmaster ’s practices), it seems very likely both Beyoncé and Ticketmaster would want to avoid repeating that mess. That most likely explains the usage of the Verified Fan system.
Where will Beyoncé be playing?
The Renaissance World Tour will hit 40 cities in North America and across Europe. Stops include Paris, London, Amsterdam, Toronto, Chicago, East Rutherford, Atlanta, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Houston, and many more.
What has Beyoncé said about the Renaissance World Tour?
She just announced it was happening with a post on February 1. Her website didn't immediately contain any more details. But during the Wearable Art Gala in October 2022, she appeared to confirm it would start this summer, as a backstage tour with her mother Tina Lawson was up for auction at the event.
Will Beyoncé be performing at the Grammys (on February 5) and sharing more tour details there?
Not clear yet, but she is the most nominated artist at the ceremony . On January 21, Variety reported that “ talks with show producers are ongoing for a possible onstage appearance ” by Beyoncé.
What can we expect from the tour on stage?
Beyoncé hasn't shared that yet either, but given the artistry she put into her recent Dubai show , it's fair to say we can expect no less than excellence, elaborate costumes, and an incredible experience.
This post will be updated the moment more detail is released.

The new tour is Beyoncé’s first worldwide concerts since 2018’s On The Run II tour with husband Jay-Z.

Bey's tour is a big one - with a setlist as expansive as hers, the singer ensures that no fan is left disappointed with a whopping 3-hour long show.
Doors will typically open between 5pm and 6pm, and Beyoncé should start her show between 8:15 and 8:20pm.
This means that the singer will finish just before 11pm, as the curfew for many stadiums is this time.

Tickets for these dates of Beyoncé's tour are now on sale: What fans need to know
Tickets to the first of three groupings of Beyoncé's Renaissance World Tour dates went on sale Monday and, not surprisingly, are doing brisk business for the Grammy legend.
In fact, her first show – May 10 in Stockholm, Sweden – sold out Tuesday, prompting the singer to add an additional Stockholm show on May 11.
Back in the U.S., staggering on-sale dates have prevented ticket sale meltdowns (so far anyway) as experienced when Taylor Swift put her tour tickets up for grabs last year .
Queen Bey, who Sunday night became the all-time Grammy champion , announced her tour last week and immediately saw fan demand exceed the number of tickets by 800%.
Group A tickets are now on sale. If you're in Groups B and C, there's still some time to get a seat to what promises to be one of the hottest tours in years.

Here's our detailed look on how to get tickets . For the latest timing details, visit Ticketmaster and find the event info for your desired date and city.
Here's what else fans should know:
How much are Beyoncé tickets?
USA TODAY found face-value ticket prices that ranged from $62 and up. Club Renaissance tickets were closer to $1,000, and some floor seats were $300 and bowl seats were around $500. Ticket prices will vary according to city and venue.
Many artists have begun to give concert promoters the OK to make a portion of each show's best seats subject to Dynamic Pricing , which is an attempt to match demand with the supply of premium seats.
The end result can sometimes be prices that far exceed original face value, as some fans of Bruce Springsteen found when dynamically priced seats for his tour cost upwards of $4,000. Only about 12% of Springsteen tickets were sold this way, his management reported.

POP superstar Beyoncé is set to unveil a series of UK stadium gigs for next summer — rivalling Oasis’ massive comeback.
Insiders said the US singer has around five dates already planned for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in North London , with other locations also in the pipeline.
It came as Liam Gallagher was seen for the first time yesterday since he reconciled with his brother Noel last month to announce the 19-date Oasis tour.
The pair put their differences from their 2009 split aside and will play to more than one million fans across the country in July, August and September next year.
Beyoncé’s huge concerts will celebrate her latest No1 album, Cowboy Carter , released in March.
And insiders told The Sun major pop artists including Shakira and Ariana Grande will also unveil British concerts for next year in the coming months.

A music source said: “Beyoncé is about to raise the roof. The demand for tickets will be just like Oasis’ and will rival fans’ rush to get their hands on a seat.
“2025 is going to be an incredible year for live music.”
Last year, Beyoncé’s eight-date UK stadium tour helped boost the economy by £8billion, with billions more set to come next year thanks to fans splashing cash on travel, hotels and eating out.
A source added: “Oasis and Beyoncé are top tier and demand for tickets will be fierce. Over seven million people tried to get Oasis tickets — and Beyoncé’s fans will be out in force too.

“The boost to the economy is going to be phenomenal. This is what the public needs right now — something to look forward to.”
Catherine Shuttleworth, chief executive at marketing consultancy Savvy, said: “Cities fight to have Beyoncé playing because she sparks a huge influx of visitors ready to spend.
'Forget Oasis'
By Ellie Henman, Bizarre Editor
WHEN my phone rang at 8am this morning with the news about Beyoncé’s mega 2025 stadium tour I punched the air.
“Forget Oasis,” my contact shouted. “Beyoncé is coming to the UK next summer.
“She’s doing Tottenham Stadium, probably five nights. It’s nailed on.”
And just when everything felt so hideously gloomy, the realisation that we’ve got a bumper summer of music coming up next year gave me the lift I needed.
It’s not just Oasis and Beyonce who are coming here, as, if my sources serve me right, Ariana Grande and Shakira are also eyeing up massive concerts in 2025 too.
This is on top of the stars who are already booked to perform next year, including Usher, Sabrina Carpenter, Gracie Abrams, Dua Lipa, Imagine Dragons and Billie Eilish who are all putting on shows on UK soil.
That’s more musical heavyweights than you can shake a stick at and it makes my heart sing.
The cost of living crisis is biting us hard, everyone is terrified of putting on the heating and the government is trying to ban smoking in pub gardens.
But when it all feels a bit rubbish, I shut eyes and think about the sun shining on my shoulders as I dance, terribly, with an overpriced/lukewarm pint of lager in my hand in front of some of my favourite music stars.
First things first though, is working out how the hell I am going to afford the tickets.
But I’ve got the rest of winter to work that out.
“Her tours boost hotels and restaurants and even salons as people want to look their best.”
Oasis have sold all the available tickets for their first 17 shows, with two extra Wembley stadium gigs being sold by ballot.
Liam returned from his holiday home in the south of France this weekend. Yesterday, he was photographed for the first time since the reunion was announced.
Onlookers said he looked relaxed as he walked his rescue dog Buttons close to the mansion he rents in Gloucestershire with fiancée Debbie Gwyther.
They added: “Liam looked like he didn’t have a care in the world, let alone the biggest tour of his career looming over him.”
Summer hot for music
DUA LIPA is among the stars leading a raft of huge concerts in the UK next summer.
The British superstar will play Wembley Stadium on June 20 and 21.
Fellow Brit Olly Murs is also on tour next year and will play 16 huge arena shows, starting in Plymouth on April 25.
American singer Sabrina Carpenter also has six huge shows, kicking off in Birmingham on March 6 before playing two shows at London’s O2 Arena, one in Glasgow’s Ovo Arena and two in Manchester’s Co-Op Live Arena.
Billie Eilish has 12 arena shows booked, starting in Glasgow’s Ovo Arena on July 7 before taking in six nights at London’s O2 before a four night run in Manchester’s Co-Op Live.
Usher is down to play ten massive gigs all in London’s O2, while rock band Imagine Dragons will play a one off show at the Tottenham stadium on July 26.
Snow Patrol, Papa Roach, Fontaines DC and Catfish And The Bottlemen are also playing massive shows next year.

The War on Drugs Talks ‘Live Drugs Again’ and Playing on Beyoncé’s ‘Cowboy Carter’: ‘It’s Arguably the Coolest Thing I’ve Ever Done’

Like many of the band’s progenitors, from Bruce Springsteen to Bob Dylan to Tom Petty, you haven’t truly experienced the War on Drugs until you’ve seen them in the flesh.
That’s what makes “Live Drugs Again,” the second live album from the Adam Granduciel-led project, such a gift. With live recordings of newer songs like “Harmonia’s Dream,” “I Don’t Wanna Wait” and “Living Proof,” the album is even better than 2020’s “Live Drugs,” which is itself an electrifying document of one of modern rock’s most consistent acts.

Popular on variety.
On “Harmonia’s Dream,” the band floats into a shimmering, two-minute slow burn, until the song settles into a groove that drives toward an explosive climax — and then an even more exciting bridge.
“Somebody in the band said it sounds like a UFO is landing,” Granduciel says of the song, which opens the live record. On the tour, it was usually played midway through the set. “As a band, you have to work up to those moments. You add a bunch of ingredients, and then you get to the point where you can start stirring them together. It’s when you’re really clicking as a band … when you can really hear each other in a way.”
As the War on Drugs embarks on a co-headlining tour with the National, with support from Lucius, Granduciel called up Variety to discuss the making of “Live Drugs Again,” getting back into the studio, and playing guitar on Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter.”
What makes a good live album?
How many shows did you tape?
Because of the technology and the digital consoles, every show gets recorded. So, at the end of the tour, I walk away with, like, I don’t even know — 700 terabytes of audio. It’s an insane amount of audio. That’s why you have to start with a memory, because it’s too time-consuming to even open one of the raw audios and import it into a session. That alone can take a whole day. So, you have to start with, “I remember this night. Let’s see what’s going on with that show.” Assuming there are no issues with the recording, you can start making it sound like a record pretty quickly.
The live band obviously changes the shape and the feel of the songs. With the songs on your most recent album, “I Don’t Live Here Anymore,” what were the discoveries that you made on stage?
Sometimes live songs will be a little faster. Sometimes you change the key of the song because it’s in the live environment, you want to push everything a little bit more. The intro of “Harmonia’s Dream” and the middle section, parts of “I Don’t Wanna Wait,” the arrangement of “I Don’t Live Here Anymore,” all of those things really came to life after a couple of weeks on the road. Even just the nuances of “Old Skin” or “Victim,” which isn’t on the live record. I’m not one to wish that you could go back and re-record the record. Part of making the record is stumbling upon moments, and then when you perform them, they become something different. The record is almost like a demo, essentially. It’s like the first impression of what a song can be. You can fine-tune that thing and then go on the road and let it grow. Certain limitations you have in the studio, or live, in terms of equipment… sounds get filtered. Multiple keyboards on “I Don’t Wanna Wait” get filtered through Jon’s [Natchez] sax. So it’s always changing.
The live take of “Burning” is pretty remarkable, too.
Yeah, that “Burning” was the one where, when I listened to it, I was like, “The vocal is so good.” I would never sing it like that on a record. But live, that’s the sort of take I was looking for — that sort of passion. All of the stress and day-to-day stuff that happens when you’re on the road for months at a time… when you go out on stage, the only hours that matter in your day are those two hours. So you put in all of that energy and frustration and love that sometimes pummels these tunes. That’s the best part. That’s what it’s all about — letting these songs take their own shapes. And if I go up tonight, on the first night of tour, and try to sing “Burning” like that, it wouldn’t be that yet. That’s the interesting thing about these live records: they kind of put a stake in the ground for some of these songs. You have to work up to that moment.
That came from my friend Shawn Everett, who recorded and mixed my last two records. He was working on that and one day was like, “Hey, why don’t you come to the studio and play on this thing?” I did not expect for it to actually end up on the song, but it just was what it was. I’m not really sure, to be honest, how much I’m allowed to talk about what I was playing along to, but basically I was playing along to just Miley singing the whole time. It was fully a Miley song.
So you didn’t even know it was a Beyoncé song?
I had heard that it was possibly a demo — that it was a song that Miley had worked on that was going to be submitted to Beyoncé. I didn’t know much about it other than that. I was just like, “This is a great song. I love this song.”
I imagine there was a pretty serious cone of silence surrounding the project?
No, it was definitely not at all top secret. There was nothing about anything that I did that was… I didn’t even know until I heard the song, the day it came out, that I was on the song. It got turned around in five weeks or something. It was very quick. Shawn is an amazing producer and engineer. But it was exciting! When I heard the song, I was like, “Is that me?” They definitely chopped it up a little bit, but the melody line was there. It’s arguably the coolest thing I’ve ever done.
Did you ever meet Beyoncé or speak with her after?
Oh, no, nothing like that.
You’ve done a lot of covers for compilation albums and TV shows — most recently, you covered Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me” for Apple TV+’s “Bad Monkey.” Would you ever consider making a covers album?
It doesn’t interest me, but I like doing covers that mean something. With the Tom Petty thing, that was like, “There’s a show happening, and they’re going to use all covers of Petty songs, with all these other artists.” I was like, “Oh my God, of course. Sign me up. I want to be a part of that.” And then it was like, “Maybe you’d want to do ‘You Wreck Me.’” And I was like, “You mean my high school anthem?” In high school, I only wore corduroy pants. I didn’t wear jeans until I was early. There’s a line in that song that’s like, “I’ll be the boy in the corduroy pants.” So that was always my fucking anthem in junior high, because I always had corduroys on. To be asked 30 years later to do a cover of it was amazing.
And then, obviously, we’ve done songs on the road. We’ve done some Warren Zevon songs, we’ve done Bob Seger, we’ve done John Lennon. A lot of that is just stuff you really want to perform. You want to sing it and play it in a space for people, maybe for a special reason. A couple of years ago, we recorded some stuff that we’d been covering, and I don’t think I’ve ever listened to it because it’s out of the context of performing it for people. And so I’m not really interested.
Maybe you’re dancing to the live version, with the early-2000s band. I saw [Bob] Dylan at Newport in 2002, and it was the first time he had played [the festival] since 1965. I don’t recall if he even played “Desolation Row,” but I have seen him play it with his full band. But, yeah, it’s just one of those things where the line happens. I’m sure at some point there’s a demo of that song where there’s basically every Dylan song I tried to fit into that line.
After this tour, is it back to the studio for you? How much of a new album have you started to configure?
I’ve started working on a record for sure. I have a creative space in Burbank, and I go every day. I’ve been working on something . But without having a label, it’s my first time making music without… I’ve always had jobs, since I was 14 or 15. So [having a label] was sort of like having a boss. You have a structure of having an A&R guy, you gotta write songs, you gotta submit them. I don’t really have that structure. So, I’m having a hard time with the idea of the finality of any sort of music. But when this tour is over, I’m going to get home to L.A. and start putting the pieces together on the new record. I’ve recorded a lot of stuff, and there’s still a lot to write and record, but I also just want to exist and live life a little bit. When you tour this much and you get home, you want to spend time with your kids. You don’t want to go right back into the studio all the time. I enjoy a fairly mundane day-to-day life, picking my kid up and hanging out and doing errands. I want to enjoy the process, and I want to make music that I feel is reflective of whatever life I’m living. But, in the winter, I’m going to start getting serious about it. Serious!
