Our Citroen C5 Aircross: the long-term verdict

Our Citroen C5 Aircross: the long-term verdict

►  We live with a Citroen C5 Aircross ►  Long-term test of French SUV ►  Ours is a PureTech 180 Flair+

Imagine if you will a young, male executive, resplendent in Zegna suit, trapped on a budget airline flight. He’s discomfited that he can’t recline his seat, by the paucity of legroom and the borderline claustrophobia. His ears are assailed by babies screaming. And stag-dos screaming. Eventually he lands, to find his baggage mislaid, and wanders outside in the pouring rain – where he’s collected by his immaculate wife in a Citroën C5 Aircross. The exec snuggles into his squidgy seat, as the Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension eases over the exit’s speed bumps, and breaks into a grateful smile as he’s chauffeured home in blissful peace and comfort…

This is my daydream for a TV spot advertising Citroën’s advanced comfort, and any resemblance to the editor-in-chief’s seven months in a C5 Aircross is entirely intentional. Apart from the Zegna suit. And leaving the screaming babies behind at the airport: my three come with me, strapped into the individual, sliding rear seats. If carrying three rear passengers is crucial, put the C5 on your list. Just be warned that the middle seat doesn’t have Isofix clamps.

C5 Aircross interior

In my introductory report, I posited the theory that the Aircross might undermine my prerequisites for an enjoyable car: precise steering, laser-guided cornering, sonorous engine. Indisputably, the Citroën offers none of the above.

The steering’s like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get: light, knotty, edgy, languid. Just take things steady, which also avoids the potential bodyroll, necessary to enable the delectable ride. And the range’s flagship engine – the 178bhp 1.6-litre turbo four-pot here – is workmanlike, with sufficient punch to crack 62mph in just over eight seconds.

But to get hung up on all this misses the point of the C5 Aircross. Driven steadily, it returned 40mpg, better than the official figure. The boot is massive, swallowing prams and easily lugging our waste to the recycling centre.

C5 aircross rear

The cabin feels airy and spacious, a sensation heightened by the glass roof standard on the top-spec Flair+ trim, costing from £29k. This also includes adaptive cruise control, which takes charge effectively on motorways, backed by lane-departure-assisted steering (a bit intrusive, so switch off if you don’t want its help) and blindspot monitoring. The C5 Aircross is a well-equipped, good-value car.

It recalibrated my definition of family wheels. I’d recommend it to anyone looking for a comfortable, practical SUV. It’s a far nicer way to travel than by budget airline.

Month 6 living with a C5 Aircross: check yourself

C5 Aircross front tracking

You jump in with your road-testing head on and you are… absolutely dumbfounded. The bodyroll! The barely-interested, candyfloss-light steering! What is this thing? Then the key’s in your hand, the C5’s in your life and it dawns on you that this Citroën is a work of some genius.

The ride is sensationally cosseting, like a Bentley Bentayga in Comfort for a fraction of the price. The boot’s massive, the wireless charging pad a lifesaver and the laidback-like-a-Provençal-afternoon vibe of the car – much, I’d imagine, like that of the classic DS in its pomp – a balm for the frantic, faintly toxic pace of life in 2020.
If only the throttle response wasn’t so sleepy: hitting Sport mode in the C5 feels entirely inappropriate.

Month 5 living with a C5 Aircross: picking faults

C5 aircross parking camera

The C5 Aircross has been winning hearts and minds with its comfort, economy and practicality, so to prove we haven’t gone soft here’s a roll call of bad stuff. The car equivalent of my household DIY to-do list.

Let’s start with the start button: it requires too long a press to ignite or kill the engine. It’s not just a Citroën thing: I once unwittingly left a Peugeot 5008 running while unlocked outside Starbucks, which speaks equal volumes about the button’s tuning and the car’s refined idling.

Similarly obstructive is the infotainment, which takes ages to clock-on for use. I’m always in a hurry and want to instantly input an address to avoid going wrong. But I was incorrect to criticise the roof blind’s ‘temperamental’ button: it’s a two-stage switch, with a firm press for automated operation and a lighter touch enabling manual control for part closure.

The DAB radio seems to drop out more than other cars’ along the A1 corridor, and the automatic transmission’s downshifts can be a bit lumpy in slowing traffic. And it looks cheap for the reversing camera’s view to redact chunks of surroundings, no doubt to save money on extraneous lenses.

Truth be told, this is nit-picking on an industrial scale. The C5 Aircross is far greater than the sum of these gripes.

Price £31,330 (£32,125 as tested) Performance 1598cc turbo four-cyl, 178bhp, 8.2sec 0-62mph, 134mph Efficiency 38.2mpg (official), 35.5mpg (tested), 129g/km CO2 Energy cost 16.2p per mile Miles this month 1551 Total miles 10189

Month 4 living with a C5 Aircross: fuel economy and mpg

C5 Aircross eco button

This is not a drill! Team Aircross (me and my C5) have just smashed 400 miles from a tank! Regular readers will have monitored my conversion from driving as if in a James Bond car chase to pootling around as if James Blunt was permaloop on the stereo, to savour the benefit of the C5’s comfy nature.

So I’ve been building up to some economy runs. The winning formula? Eco button on to anaesthetise the accelerator, air-con mostly off, progress at a pace that enables me to check out the countryside and hum You’re Beautiful. The result: 440 miles from 50-odd litres, at 40mpg. That’s better than the official mpg figure, and no fluke: Team Aircross scored 420 miles again a few weeks later.

Price £31,330 (£32,125 as tested) Performance 1598cc turbo four-cyl, 178bhp, 8.2sec 0-62mph, 134mph Efficiency 38.2mpg (official), 36.0mpg (tested), 129g/km CO2 Energy cost 16p per mile Miles this month 1922 Total miles 8638

Month 3 of our Citroen C5 Aircross long-term test: how it drives

Citroen C5 Aircross interior

Three months in, and the Citroën-McNamara family courtship is getting serious. The attraction extends beyond this comfort-biased crossover’s easy-going nature. Its practicality is a real help around the house. The family spent two weekends laying a new lawn, which entailed loading the Aircross with turf ’til the springs sagged and it became a Groundcross, then hauling waste to the tip.

The two-level boot floor isn’t quite the gimmick I initially thought, adding 9cm of depth to help cram in my three girls’ suitcases, toys and scooters under the cover for a weekend away. Basically this biggest-in-class boot is more cavernous than a spelunker convention, even with the sliding rear bench in its rearmost position to allow sufficient room for adult legs behind my low-flying, thrust-back driver’s seat.

However, only the two outer seats have Isofix brackets on which to clamp child seats, and there’s no tethering hook on the rear of the middle seat. The Peugeot 5008, by contrast, anchors three child seats across the back.

To drive, the Aircross doesn’t get the heart racing. The variable-rate steering is great at manoeuvring speeds, superlight and greyhound fast from lock to lock. But once you’re rolling around town, it becomes as unpredictable as Joe Pesci in Goodfellas. The rack typically feels light and a bit vague, occasionally with inconsistent weighting as you swing eagerly through corners. Reassuring heft arrives at faster speeds, though weirdly it then gets all sensitive and needs frequent correction.

Steering precision isn’t helped by the soft suspension set-up. Bumps on corner entry can get the body pitching, before the C5 rolls into a jaunty lean through the bend. This masks the plentiful underlying grip, but there’s a nagging sense that the Aircross is at the border on its way out of its comfort zone.

All told the C5 Aircross is more dependable than racy. And given this is a family car, there’s plenty to be said for that.

Month 2 living with a Citroen C5 Aircross: Comfy McComfortface™

C5 aircross rear tracking

Once, while trying to give me a massage, a masseur commented that I seemed tense. The more I tried to relax, the tenser I became. Inevitably, it ended with the masseur suggesting I take a hike. The C5 Aircross’ ride is like having a massage. Or like a normal person having a massage. There’s activity, but it’s relaxing. You feel the suspension working away at each corner, absorbing the shock of a bump, calming the drop of a wheel into a pothole, the body pitching in a pillowy way.

Instead of a traditional bump stop at both ends of the suspension travel, there’s a hydraulic damper which absorbs and gradually dissipates the kinetic energy. Avoiding jolts at the extremities of wheel travel allows Citroën to deploy a softer setting in the midrange, where the springs and shocks do most of their work. It makes for a splendidly smooth and cosseting commute.

Month 1 living with a C5 Aircross: hello and welcome

Citroen C5 Aircross parking

Periodically the CAR staff have a chat like this with Our Cars supremo Ben Pulman. ‘Which car would you like to run next?’ ‘I’d like to run a Ferrari 488 GTB.’ ‘Excellent, Ford Focus it is.’ So when I asked Ben for a hybrid or electric non-SUV, he naturally channelled me into a petrol-engined SUV, the Citroën C5 Aircross.

It’s a model I drove for a few days when it made Europe’s 2019 Car of the Year shortlist, musing: ‘Citroën’s midsize SUV has a welcome comfort focus. So the ride is comfy and calm, and it’s peaceful thanks to effective noise suppression. Shame the steering feels light and imprecise.’ I scored it joint last of seven contenders.

So as the new McNamara family workhorse, this top-spec Flair+ model has some convincing to do. First up it’s a handsome steed. There are loads of brilliant design details, such as the double-chevron grille insert wrapping around the daytime running lights, the curvy front and rear wings, the chrome ‘reversed C’ bisecting the side glass (hints of Bugatti Chiron, anyone?), the three-dimensional rear lamps.

Not wishing to undermine this distinctiveness with a muted colour, I opted for the £545 Volcano Red paint and £250 worth of contrasting black roof. The 19-inch two-tone alloy wheels are standard – turn them all black for a mere £100.

The C5 Aircross costs from £23,830 for a base-spec Feel car. It’s pretty well equipped, with the Progressive Hydraulic Cushion suspension standard, along with smartphone-mirroring infotainment, voice control, rear parking sensors and decent safety kit including blindspot monitoring, anti-lane-departure steering and automated braking if you don’t respond to an upcoming obstacle.

Citroen C5 Aircross long-term test

Stump up £2100 more for Flair trim, which adds 18-inch wheels, sat-nav, a reversing/overhead-view camera and comfort seats. Soft under the bum, supportive behind your lower back and part-finished in a grey textile seemingly from a rucksack, they are both supremely snug and aesthetically delightful.

But we’ve stepped up to the £28,300 Flair+ trim with so many goodies I didn’t feel the need to tick a single optional feature. It has a full-length glass roof (whose one-touch opening seems a tad temperamental), keyless entry and pointless hands-free tailgate, wireless charging and active cruise control. Combined with active lane assist, this gives you Level 2 autonomous driving on the highway, starting and stopping the C5 according to traffic and keeping it between the dotted lines.

Operating it requires you to grope among seven controls on a stalk part-obscured by the steering wheel. While the ergonomics are messier than a six-year-old’s bedroom, the system keeps the Aircross smoothly in lane on fast, tricky sweepers, and isn’t too hectoring in its efforts to make you grip the wheel.

There are two petrol and two diesel engines, and we’ve picked the top-spec four-cylinder petrol. This turbocharged 1.6-litre only musters 184lb ft of torque, but it can wade in like a bouncer during a nightclub brawl, overwhelming the wheels in a turn and deflecting the softly-sprung body sideways. Acceleration feels sprightly enough: you wouldn’t want any more shove, given the soft suspension and light steering. First impression is that this variably-assisted rack is a mixed bag: sometimes sloppy off the dead-ahead, then fidgety on the motorway, with frequent nibbles of intervention from the lane ‘assist’.

Put these dynamic attributes together, and the C5 Aircross seems made for cruising not hooning. So I’ll recalibrate my driving style and settle back in those lounge seats, to enjoy a loping primary ride which won’t pummel you like so many of today’s family cars, and revel in the airy, stylish cabin and pretty decent fuel economy. Let’s see how that goes over the next few months…

Price £31,330 (£32,125 as tested) Performance 1598cc turbo four-cylinder, 178bhp, 184lb ft, 8.2sec 0-62mph, 134mph Efficiency 38.2mpg (official), 35.0mpg (tested), 129g/km CO2 Energy cost 15p per mile Miles this month 3195 Total miles 354

New Citroen C5 Aircross hybrid 2020 review

Hybrid suvs are increasing in popularity, so is the new citroen c5 aircross hybrid among the best.

citroen c5 aircross adaptive cruise control

3.5 out of 5

The Citroen C5 Aircross builds on the refinement offered by petrol and diesel versions with a smooth powertrain, but it also shares the same lifeless steering and peculiar ride. It’s still close to matching the appeal of its sister model, the Peugeot 3008 , for a lower price. But for private buyers, this plug-in hybrid C5 Aircross is still a lofty proposition.

This is the new plug-in hybrid version of the Citroen C5 Aircross, and it marks an important milestone for parent company PSA.

That’s because it means that all four of the company’s brands - Citroen, DS, Peugeot and Vauxhall - now offer a plug-in hybrid family SUV. All four use the same platform called EMP2, and all use the same powertrain: a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine mated to a battery and electric motor system.

Best hybrid SUVs - header image

As such, it’s best to differentiate them on the subtleties of their branding. In the case of the Citroen, that means we’re looking for striking looks, the promise of a comfortable driving experience, and good value for money.

If you get Citroen’s latest design language the C5 Aircross will sell itself and, like those other PSA plug-ins, the Hybrid-specific design tweaks are subtle, amounting to blue badges on the front wings and blue Airbump rims.

What will be of interest to more private buyers is the price. The entry-level C5 Aircross undercuts the cheapest 3008 by around £1,200 and the DS 7 Crossback by a massive £12,355. That last figure is explained mainly by the DS 7 only coming with a 296bhp dual electric motor version of PSA’s plug-in hybrid powertrain: an option too expensive for Citroen buyers, according to the firm’s bosses.

citroen c5 aircross adaptive cruise control

The C5 Aircross makes do with a 178bhp output, which is perfectly adequate for most buyers. The resulting 8.7 second 0-62mph time is reasonable; any more than this would likely ask too many questions of the C5 Aircross’s chassis.

The ride is strangely inconsistent despite a rear suspension setup tuned specifically for the Citroen. It’s floaty at high speed, but gets caught out by sharper bumps at round-town pace. The steering is light at low speeds, and doesn't really weight up as your speed increases.

Refinement is excellent, however. Not just good for a plug-in hybrid, but good full-stop. At low speeds and relying on electric power only, the double-glazed windows and soundproofing do an outstanding job of isolating wind and road noise, and even when the four-cylinder engine kicks in, it does so almost imperceptibly. The eight speed auto does a fine job of shuffling up the gears, though can get caught out by sudden prods of the throttle.

citroen c5 aircross adaptive cruise control

Three drive modes are available, Electric, Hybrid and Sport. A fourth option, accessed by a separate button allows you to hold the battery charge, so it can be used when you enter an urban area. You can also use this setting to charge the battery on the move with the petrol engine though like all PHEVs, it’s an inefficient way to drive.

It takes two hours to charge the 13.2kWh battery from a 7kW wallbox, which is good for a claimed, and realistic, 34 miles of all-electric driving. As a result, fuel economy sits at 157.2-222.3mpg under WLTP testing, though with a flat battery you can expect a figure closer to 43mpg. Assuming you charge it regularly, official CO2 emissions are rated between 32 and 41g/km, so the C5 Aircross Hybrid sits in the 10 per cent company car tax bracket in the 2020/21 financial year.

Inside, there’s little to tell the Hybrid apart from other models. There’s a blue LED behind the rear-view mirror to tell other road users when the car is running in electric mode, and a button which allows access to the various hybrid-specific menus in the infotainment system. Elsewhere, it’s business as usual, meaning there’s decent space for five to sit in the extremely comfy seats, and despite a reduction in size over petrol and diesel models, the 460 litre boot is decent and has underfloor cable storage.

There are three ergonomic oddities though. Like other PSA products, half the glovebox is lost to a fusebox. More annoyingly, the gearstick is located on the far side of the transmission tunnel, meaning you need to stretch a fair way to select the car’s increased brake regen mode - perhaps hangovers from the left to right-hand-drive conversion,

Citroen offers the C5 Aircross Hybrid in just two trims: Flair and Flair Plus. The £35,370 Flair offers 18-inch alloy wheels, front and rear park sensors and a rear camera, an eight-inch touchscreen, Android Auto and Apple Carplay and fully-digital instruments. Citroën C5 Aircross long-term test

Citroen C5 Aircross (2022) review

Written by Graham King Published: 20 November 2023 Updated: 15 August 2024

Gareth Evans and the Citroen C5 Aircross

Citroen’s C5 Aircross is a family SUV with unmistakably French style – it majors on comfortable cruising rather than peak performance, and is very well equipped with some of the latest technology, but does without any form of electrical power. Instead it uses a 1.2-litre petrol engine, but will its 130hp tally with the car’s otherwise premium feel, or will it be lacking in oomph for motorway-speed miles? Gareth’s going to spend the next six months finding out…

Reports by Gareth Evans

Update 1: Welcome to the Fleet

Introducing the Citroen C5 Aircross

Citroen’s family car offerings have improved dramatically over recent years, and I’m looking forward to exploring their current capabilities during the next six months as I get to know, and hopefully love, the C5 Aircross SUV .

Before we delve into the spec sheet itself, a little on what I’m expecting to find. First and foremost, I expect it’ll be a comfortable vehicle, with supple ride quality and cushy seats. I also predict the engine will be a highlight – it’s the 1.2-litre PureTech turbocharged petrol that’s won loads of fans over the years for its smooth, punchy power delivery and relatively low running costs.

And finally, I’m anticipating a car that’s easy to live with. It should be practical, easy to park and safe. So with those expectations in mind, let’s inspect the details of KW22 LZS.

Citroen C5 Aircross side profile showing optional 19-inch wheels and Airbumps on the flanks

It’s in mid-spec Shine specification, which means the following highlights from the spec sheet:

  • Advanced ‘comfort’ suspension
  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • Automatic LED headlights featuring self-switching high-beams
  • Keyless entry and ignition
  • Next generation comfort seats finished in leather-effect cloth
  • Split boot floor
  • 10-inch touchscreen multimedia system with six speakers, Bluetooth, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay , USB connections and built-in sat-nav
  • Electric parking brake
  • Driver-assistance system featuring automatic braking , fatigue detection, traffic sign recognition , lane-keeping assist , blindspot monitoring and adaptive cruise control
  • Front and rear parking sensors , rear-view reversing camera
  • Sliding rear seats
  • 580-litre boot

The 1.2-litre PureTech engine has 131hp and 230Nm of pulling power, which equates to a 0-62mph dash in 10.5 seconds. Fuel economy is a claimed 41.3mpg to 49.5mpg, while the petrol tank is 53 litres, which means a range of around 450 miles.

The view from the driver's seat of the Citroen C5 Aircross

I’m fairly surprised at those figures given how big this vehicle looks, but despite its off-roader appearance, the C5 Aircross only weighs 1,537kg. It’s 4.5 metres long and just over 2.0 metres wide with the mirrors out, which should make it easy to park, too.

However, it does without all-wheel drive , so it’ll be interesting to see how it fares if and when we get some snowfall in my rural part of Northamptonshire. Tax isn’t particularly taxing either: You’ll pay £165 a year in VED (after a first year rate of £230), while company car drivers will be in for BIK payable at 33%.

Its list price is quite high though. As standard this car weighs in at £28,080, but I’ve got a couple of optional extras on board: the black metallic paint is £595, while the bi-tone alloys are another £225. Final on-the-road price? £28,900.

Curiously, Citroen isn’t currently offering a PCP deal on this car direct from its website at the moment. But lease deals start from around £400 per month for a standard car, which means it’ll be a few quid more than that in the spec you can see here.

I’m excited to run this flight of French fancy to discover just what life’s going to be like. I’ll be doing some decent miles in it over the coming months, including the possibility of a trip back to its homeland to visit some relatives. Bring it on…

Update 2: Three thousand miles in

A dirty Citroen C5 Aircros s highlights some wintery pros and cons

This Citroen C5 Aircross might be filthy, but it's doing well during winter

I’ve covered a few thousand miles in the Citroen C5 Aircross now, and it’s capably navigated me through freezing conditions over Christmas and January. In the main I’m enjoying life with this family SUV – I appreciate its seats and suspension, both of which have been optimised for comfort rather than performance.

But the clever bit is that it doesn’t roll around like you may expect either, keeping itself coolly controlled in corners. This predictable nature helps me to position the car accurately in bends, my passengers remaining unflustered and unaffected as I do so.

There aren’t many SUVs that manage such subtly, and I think it’s to be commended.

Time to talk grime…

Running it through winter has been an interesting exercise, too. There’s one thing you can bank on each and every year: road grime. It seems to get everywhere, making it nearly impossible to keep a car clean, and black paint suffers this worse than almost any other shade or colour.

The washer jets on the Citroen C5 Aircross are on the wiper blades, which seems like a great solution

Muck on the roads inevitably finds its way to the windscreen, which in turn has caused me to go through a whole bottle of washer fluid already. This isn’t unusual, but the washer jets on the wiper blades are – and I think this is a very neat touch on the C5 Aircross.

They ensure the water always goes where it needs to, just in front of the blade, and it also provides great coverage and less screen wash wastage.

I’m less enamoured with the front door design, though. A huge amount of mud builds up between the sill and the bottom of the doors, and this dirt has an uncanny way of ending up below the knee of my trousers unless I concentrate very hard on missing it when I get out of the car. A minor bugbear perhaps, but still somewhat annoying.

The door design of the Citroen C5 Aircross isn't great when the going gets muddy

Still, the car warms up and thaws out in decent time when the mercury drops really low. We’ve had a few evenings below minus five centigrade where I live, and within five minutes it’s safe to start driving after a cold start.

Delving into the online configurator, I was surprised to note that heated seats aren’t an option on this car either, regardless of trim level you pick. Sure, this is a creature comfort, but I have to say, in sub-zero conditions it’d be most welcome.

My final thing to note at this juncture is that I got a puncture. It was completely unavoidable – a tiny wood screw picked up somewhere or other had pierced through the tread of the tyre and deflation resulted. The odd thing here was how I found out, though: it was only walking past the car on the drive after I’d arrived home that I noticed a hissing sound.

Not one but two nails found their way into the tread of the Citroen C5 Aircross

I hadn’t noticed anything different in the way it drove, but plugging in my air compressor confirmed that pressure had dropped from the advised 36PSI to a lowly 16. Time to get some help. It was fixed in 20 minutes by Tony at Oundle Tyres, costing a grand total of £24, so that aspect was a welcome relief.

However, I can’t help wondering why the tyre pressure warning system didn’t activate and let me know something was amiss… in my experience these systems are often too sensitive, not the other way around! I’ve approached Citroen for a comment on this but they’ve yet to respond at time of publication.

Still, there are some longer trips on the cards for the C5 Aircross soon. I’m off up to the Lake District and coming back the very same day. That should be a brilliant test of the Citroen’s cruising capabilities. Tune in next month for the report.

Update 3: Long day to the Lake District… and back

Gareth’s been battling the M6 a bit too much for his liking recently

The Citroen C5 Aircross did the Lake District and back to Northamptonshire on a tank of fuel

My weekends are becoming evermore valuable as time goes by, which is the primary reason I’d decided to drive to my nephew’s first birthday party in the Lake District and back again in a single day. From my house in Northamptonshire it’s roughly 215 miles each way, which set the scene perfectly for my biggest day yet in the driver’s seat of the Citroen C5 Aircross . A great chance to find out what this French family friendly SUV had to offer in the comfort department.

Setting off with a full tank of fuel at 8am to give ourselves every chance of arriving before the 1pm start time, I set the destination in Google Maps using voice control (I use this a lot now) and set off, steeled for a long day.

We trundled up the A14 with the adaptive cruise control set to 70mph , the car smoothly adjusting its speed to that of the vehicle ahead when there wasn’t space to overtake. It started well.

Is the Citroen C5 Aircross a one-tank wonder?

Joining the M6 right at its most southerly junction, the Catthorpe Interchange, we headed to The North. I was secretly hoping we’d cover the trip in a nice, round single tank – one of my few criticisms of this car being the somewhat lacklustre fuel economy of around 38mpg I’d been seeing on my local drives. I hoped this would improve on the motorway over a longer cruising period. The dash reads just over 400 miles to a tank when I brim it, so by my calculations it might be possible, but only just…

The M6 motorway – and the M6 Toll to get us around Birmingham – dominated the day, its rough surfaces, poor driving standards, average speed checks and roadworks combining with grey, drizzle-soaked weather to make life as miserable as you could imagine.

However, the car did its level best to brighten up our day. It really is amazingly comfortable, both in terms of its front seats and its suspension.

We made brilliant headway throughout the morning, stopping at Lancaster Services simply for a drink; we could easily have done the whole lot in one go, but we were tracking to be more than an hour early to the party! A coffee and a stretch of the legs seemed the best solution.

Lancaster Services featured twice in this epic Citroen C5 Aircross adventure - what fun!

We eventually rolled into Windermere and began navigating its tiny streets around 12:30, and I was instantly glad the Aircross is so wieldy. I’ve said this before, but considering how chunky it looks, it really does handle just like a softly sprung hatchback. The steering is very light, which makes tighter corners easier.

Having made it in plenty of time for the party, we settled down and enjoyed the festivities, including a remarkable buffet laid on by my brother-in-law.

We decided to leave for leg two late afternoon, just as the light was starting to peter out. It was only when we reached the M6 again that the rain began, and in the gloom it seemed like everyone had forgotten basic rules of the road. There was tailgating, undertaking, aggression and negligence at every juncture, and I could tell this would be a tiring drive. I did what I always do in this situation: slowed right down, left loads of room around me, and settled in for the long haul.

The return leg…

So far the C5 Aircross had sipped around half its fuel, the trip computer stating we’d get home with only a few miles to spare. Game on…

We stopped at Lancaster again simply to break the journey up, grabbing some tea for later at the unforgivably expensive shop – a decision we regretted as soon as the attendant rang up our items on the till. Not to worry, though. Lesson learnt.

Thankfully the traffic thinned out a bit at this point, and we made easy progress down the remainder of the M6 towards home. We arrived at the A14 and two things happened – the car bonged telling me I was low on fuel, with around 50 miles left in the tank according to the gauge.

And secondly, I noticed just how effective the automatic main beam headlights are on the Aircross. They’re not as advanced as the ‘Matrix’ items found in some other cars, but they do the job well, activating when there’s nobody around and dipping when they detect another road user.

I love this feature: the Citroen C5 Aircross tells Google Maps it's running out of fuel, and shows not only the nearest filling stations, but also how much they're charging. Very neat!

But going back to the bonging quickly, I was really impressed with what Android Auto does in this situation. It automatically switches to a view of all the nearest service stations, giving you distances and also telling you the price of fuel at each, which allows you to make decisions based on price as well as proximity. Clever stuff.

I decided to stop a few miles from home, simply because I wanted to use the car again the following day without having to visit a filling station. It could have done the whole day’s driving, just, but life got in the way…

The car registered fuel economy of 42.1mpg over the trip, which being honest, isn’t actually as high as I was expecting. I suppose a vehicle of these dimensions is asking rather a lot from a 1.2-litre engine.

Still, what a great companion for a journey like this. I got out at the end never wanting to see the M6 again, but fully ready to jump back in the Citroen.

Update 4: An engine essay

The elephant in the room is up for discussion . It’s the C5 Aircross’s 1.2 engine …

citroen c5 aircross adaptive cruise control

In this update, having covered more than 5,000 miles in the Citroen C5 Aircross, I’d like to talk about something I immediately suspected would be the elephant in the room when I first saw the spec sheet: its engine.

You see, while it might look like a large SUV , this Aircross only boasts a 1.2-litre petrol engine, and it’s not many years since such paltry capacity in a vehicle this big would have been laughed out of the car park.

It’s fair to say it hardly dominates proceedings. The French firm’s PureTech engines are very highly regarded as smooth and relatively powerful, but even with your foot firmly down on the accelerator there isn’t what you’d call a lot of punch.

Smooth PureTech’s paltry petrol performance

Its 10.5-second 0-62mph time illustrates this point well, resolutely not setting the world on fire, although thanks to the extra torque from the turbocharger it does overtake fairly competently. You just need to drop at least one gear in order to do so.

The size vs performance deficit also rears its head when it comes to fuel economy , with 40mpg an optimistic dream unless you’re going so slowly that you’ll be holding up traffic. The claimed fuel economy of 41.3-49.5mpg seems rather generous to me, having tested it in all driving conditions imaginable over the past few months.

Many cars fare better on the motorway than on rural country lanes, but even on my M6 adventure recently, trying extra hard, I only managed 42mpg. When petrol is so expensive, those extra miles-per-gallon would come in very useful indeed, but they remain elusive. A hybrid or a diesel would fare far better, I suspect.

citroen c5 aircross adaptive cruise control

However, all of that isn’t to say it’s a bad car to drive. Quite the opposite, in fact: there’s a pleasing pep to the performance that makes this engine endearing, accompanied by a characteristic three-cylinder thrum.

The gearchange is great too – it’s a solid-feeling, long-throw manual, which is characteristic of French cars of yore – but I can’t help wishing it were an automatic.

Not only would it be easier to drive (albeit less characterful), but the clutch pedal doesn’t have a lot of room and I find my boots rub against the footrest on the left-hand side of the footwell when I use it. This isn’t the end of the world, and it hasn’t yet marked my shoes, but I’d like a bit more space down there…

Anyway, one thing I have noticed recently is that the engine has improved noticeably. A few thousand miles have really helped it loosen up, and it feels freer to rev and smoother too. This is a good no-cost upgrade and goes to show that sometimes cars get better with age.

The same can’t be said of the windscreen washers I was raving about in my earlier updates, though. I’ve recently discovered that when you run out of fluid, there’s no warning light to let you know, so either keep it topped up regularly, carry some fluid around with you, or prepare to get caught unable to rinse the screen.

Of course, this will inevitably only happen when said screen is filthy, the sun is low in the sky, and you’re on a motorway with no services for miles. And yes, that’s experience talking. Or do I mean complaining?

Update 5: Practical in places

The C5 Aircross looks like a large SUV, but how does that affect its usefulness as family transport? Gareth’s been finding out…

Sliding rear seats make the Citroen C5 Aircross a very practical machine

I’ve mentioned several times now that the C5 Aircross seems like it doesn’t have enough engine for the size of the car, but I’m pleased to report its practicality more than measures up.

First and foremost, it’ll carry four adults in complete comfort. I’ve done this loads of times, and my passengers have never been anything other than complimentary of the headroom and leg space on offer, and it’s very quiet in the cabin, making longer journeys less of a bother.

Incidentally they like the seats too, in what Citroen rather poetically term an Urban Black interior ambience with black Alcantara and leather-effect cloth, Next-Generation Advanced Comfort Seats, features manual driver lumbar adjustment and electric driver’s seat adjustment (six-way). Phew.

The Citroen C5 Aircross's cabin is a nice place to be

Thanks to tinted glass, it’s a little dark in the back, which some children may not like so much, but there’s loads of space and a USB in the central console to plug some of those all-important smart devices in.

You’re able to trade rear seat legroom with boot space too, because the three seats slide a few inches.

The boot itself has a false floor that enables multiple configurations, although I’m a little disappointed there are no bag hooks back there to hang your shopping on. That feels like an oversight for a family vehicle, and I’ve defaulted to using the rear footwells instead of having bags (and my shopping) rolling around in the cavernous 580-litre boot.

Lack of bag hooks is one small irritation with the Citroen C5 Aircross

Another bugbear for me is the lack of spare wheel, but I do appreciate they add weight and thus hinder fuel economy.

That didn’t seem like too much of a sacrifice at all when the deflation alarm triggered again the other day, although it turned out one of the tyres had simply lost a few PSI this time rather than going totally flat due to a puncture. I topped it up, reset the warning and haven’t heard a peep since.

Anyway, in many other respects this is a seriously practical car. There’s even a 12-volt socket (the artist formerly known as ‘a cigarette lighter’) in the boot to plug your tyre pump in, which is handy… back in December it passed the patented Christmas Tree Test with flying colours, too.

Citroen C5 Aircross passing The Christmas Tree Test

The big bins in the doors are very useful, and helpfully hold drinks bottles that are too tall to put in the cup holders. Anything too large in them obstructs the gear lever, but a standard 330ml can of your favourite soft drink is fine.

Still, overall, the C5 Aircross is a practical family car. You’ll get cleverer touches in the likes of Skoda’s Kodiaq , but the Citroen is versatile, roomy, quiet, comfortable and solidly built.

Update 6: Saying goodbye to the good and the bad

The C5 Aircross has some impressive features and some less so…

It’s time to say goodbye to the Citroen C5 Aircross – a medium-sized family SUV that I’ve become rather fond of.

The highlight is undoubtedly its comfort. The suspension has been optimised with that in mind, so the ride is compliant and predictable. But the cabin is also seriously well insulated, and the front seats are just wonderful, with great support and soft materials. They’re among the best car seats I’ve ever tried, in more than a decade of road testing.

High praise in that respect, then, but sadly the same can’t be said for the engine and transmission, which don’t seem particularly well matched to this package. In isolation, the 1.2-litre PureTech is a brilliant motor, with smooth and punchy power delivery, but it’s out of its depth in the Aircross and as such isn’t particularly efficient. Struggling to hit 38mpg isn’t ideal when fuel pricing is so expensive.

In my opinion, it’d benefit from a larger-capacity engine and an automatic gearbox. This combination would blend better with the laid-back nature of the car and make the best of the excellent ride comfort.

It’s a practical car too, with a decently sized boot and room for four adults in the cabin. I ended up carrying most of my shopping in the cabin, however, because of a lack of ways to keep bags secure in the luggage compartment. Some small upgrades in that respect would make a huge difference to the car’s usefulness, although it did still pass the patented Christmas Tree Test with ease, as you can see in the update above.

One small factor that I found a little annoying was the multimedia system’s tendency to default to radio every time I switched the car on, rather than immediately reconnecting to Android Auto. You need to select the latter on the touchscreen every time, which ultimately delays your departure and forces a radio station’s invariably noisy output into your ears for a short time. While this isn’t the end of the world in any respect, other car companies do manage to get the car to default to a streaming system rather than radio. It seems an odd thing to have to put up with.

However, the low-fuel feature that displays the closes filling stations and the price of petrol was a very nice touch:

Another minor electronic bugbear was the sensors for the tyre-pressure monitoring system, which didn’t function when they should have, and also provided me with one ‘false positive’, showing underinflation when it was only a few PSI down.

On the other hand, there’s nothing to warn you when you’ve run out of washer fluid, which means the only way you’ll find out is by running out. Not ideal when you’re on a dirty, drizzly motorway…

And those doors really do collect the muck, which invariably ends up on my trousers, which is slightly irritating.

Another thing I liked was the driver assistance technology on the car, which I found impressively non-intrusive. Such systems – active lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control and automatic braking – can be very annoying in some rival cars but Citroen’s version seems to perform with very little fuss or fanfare, which is just what you want if you ask me.

Overall, the C5 Aircross has been a capable, comfortable companion with a couple of niggles tarnishing an otherwise impressive list of attributes.

Goodbye Citroen C5 Aircross

What are Progressive Hydraulic Cushions?

  • With slight compression and rebound, the springs and dampers control vertical movement together without applying the hydraulic stops. However, the presence of these stops increases the vehicle’s freedom of movement, creating a ‘magic carpet’ effect, as if the car were flying over bumps and dips in the road.
  • In the event of greater compression and rebound, the springs and dampers work together with the hydraulic compression or rebound stops, which gradually slow down the movement, thereby avoiding sudden jolts. Unlike a conventional mechanical stop, which absorbs and then partially restores energy, the hydraulic stops absorb and dissipate this energy. As a result, there is no rebound.

In addition, several new style elements on the side panels enhance its elegance and modernity, like the new 18” diamond-cut PULSAR alloy wheels, the new Glossy Black colour of the rear-view mirror shells, and the glossy black functional roof bars with a new matt black insert.

Finally, the two-tone gives the vehicle even greater distinction and elegance.

The high and wide central console has been modernised with black leather-effect fabric trim edged in chrome.

On automatic gearboxes, it includes the e-Toggle gear selector with chrome finish and the driving mode selector, with Grip Control function for petrol and diesel versions.

On plug-in hybrid versions, the central console incorporates the choice of driving mode: electric, hybrid or sport.

New Citroën C5 Aircross retains all the characteristics of a powerful and reassuring SUV, evident in its muscular side panels:

  • 230 mm ground clearance;
  • Large 720 mm diameter wheels;
  • 360° protection, including Airbump® and wheel arches;
  • Distinctive and functional roof racks;
  • A dominant driving position.

Several stylistic elements on the side enhance the elegance and modernity of New Citroën C5 Aircross:

  • New 18" PULSAR alloy wheels with two-tone graphic elements
  • New Glossy Black colour of the rear-view mirror shells to match that of the windscreen glazing support post
  • Glossy black functional roof bars with a new matt black insert in the lower area
  • A new design for the Airbump® Colour Packs, echoing the colours of the front-end inserts.

Citroën C5 Aircross has evolved to boast a more imposing style and greater elegance on the road.

The styling of its front end has had a facelift to become more vertical, reinforcing its character.

It introduces a new design language in which curves give way to more structured lines.

Consistent with the front of the vehicle, New Citroën C5 Aircross has a new three-dimensional LED light signature at the rear.

The lamp unit is fitted with structured tinted glass echoing the shape of the three LED modules..

As on the front end, the subtle piano key design reinforces the deep 3D effect of the light signature..

Citroen reveals prices and specs for C5 Aircross

Citroen has opened order books for the new-look C5 Aircross SUV, with prices starting at £25,515. The updated Aircross will be available in three specification levels; 'Sense Plus', 'Shine' and C-Series Edition'.

'Sense Plus' replaces 'Sense' on the current C5 Aircross model, offering a number of new features. These include 18-inch 'Pulsar' diamond cut alloy wheels, reversing camera, front and rear parking sensors, Keyless Entry and Start, plus electric folding exterior mirrors.

The next step up, 'Shine', adds in a driver assistance pack with adaptive cruise control, comfort seats with Alcantara upholstery, video and radar safety assistance braking and 'Urban Black' interior styling.

The top level is the 'C-Series Edition', which has been tailored specifically for the UK market. Starting at £29,105, it includes a 'Perla Nera Black' bi-tone roof, panoramic glass sunroof, motorised tailgate with hands-free access, wireless charging and an anodised bronze colour pack.

Petrol and diesel engines are available across the entire range, but the 'Shine' and 'C-Series Edition' trims are also available as a Plug-in Hybrid, which will combine a 180HP petrol engine with an 80kW electric motor. This will offer drivers up to 34 electric-only miles (WLTP).

The 2022 Aircross has updated exterior styling, including functional air curtains to improve the aerodynamics and a new front grille that Citroen say add to its assertive new look. A new version of the Citroen logo has been included on the front that is now 'detached' from the daytime running lights, whilst at the rear there are new LED light clusters.

Inside, the gear selector has been redesigned and the centre console has been updated. The hybrid models also have a new driving mode selector.

The original C5 Aircross has been a popular car for Citroen, having sold 16,000 units in the UK since 2019. They expect the updated Aircross to be in UK showrooms in late spring this year.

Exclusive-russians use chinese partner to produce citroen cars at idled stellantis plant.

By Gleb Stolyarov and Alexander Marrow

(Reuters) - Carmaker Stellantis halted production in Russia in April 2022.

But the decision did not stop Russian operators from joining forces with a Chinese partner the following year to start making new versions of Stellantis' Citroen models, according to customs data and two people familiar with the matter.

In December last year, Russian company Automotive Technologies imported at least 42 car kits for assembling the Citroёn C5 Aircross model at the Kaluga plant, which is still majority-owned by Stellantis, customs records drawn from a commercial trade data provider showed.

Manufactured in China, the kits were produced by China's Dongfeng Motor Group, the data showed.

Automotive Technologies was assembling the Citroёn C5 Aircross at the Kaluga factory, according to two employees at different Russian car dealerships. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because the information is not public.

It is not clear if the kits from China contained parts that fall under the scope of Western sanctions on Russia, to which Beijing is not a party, and there is no suggestion from the customs data or sources that Stellantis knew about the imports.

But the findings highlight the lack of control Western companies such as Ikea or Carlsberg now have over their brands after suspending Russian operations or leaving the country after the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

They also demonstrate Moscow's increasing dependence on Beijing, particularly in the car industry.

In response to Reuters' findings, Stellantis said it had concluded since Dec. 31, 2023, that it has "lost control of its entities in Russia."

Stellantis said it had recognised a loss of 144 million euros ($154.53 million) as a result, including the loss of 87 million euros of cash and cash equivalents.

Chinese state-owned Dongfeng, Russia's industry and trade ministry and Automotive Technologies did not respond to emailed requests for comment.

Russia's auto industry had been heavily reliant on investment, equipment and parts from overseas, particularly Europe.

Stellantis blamed logistical difficulties and the sanctions imposed on Moscow when it halted operations. It owns 70% of the Kaluga plant with the remaining 30% held by Mitsubishi Motors. Prior to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, the factory produced Peugeot, Citroen, Opel and Mitsubishi cars with an annual capacity of 125,000 vehicles.

PARALLEL IMPORTS

Although many foreign carmakers have since left the Russian market, some supplies continue to make their way to the country through a "parallel imports" scheme introduced by Moscow. That allows importers to bring in products from abroad without the trademark owner's permission.

Citroen models continue to be available for sale in Russia, four Russian car dealers told Reuters.

In December 2023, the Kaluga plant's operators hosted an official launch for the "production of medium-sized crossovers." Reuters was not invited.

Automotive Technologies, a company registered in Moscow in March 2023 and 100% owned by Galina Dolgolenko, said in December it was assembling a pilot batch of 48 imported cars, ahead of mass production beginning in 2024, but did not name the supplier or model of car.

Pavel Bezruchenko, Automotive Technologies' strategic development director, was quoted in the Russian newspaper Vedomosti in December as saying the company brings in cars from China using parallel imports.

Bezruchenko did not answer the phone or reply to messages seeking comment.

Two car dealership employees told Reuters that Automotive Technologies had informed them that they would be receiving Citroen C5 Aircross models, assembled in Kaluga from imported kits.

However, it was not clear whether the cars rolling off the production line would retain the Citroen brand.

In 2022, Russia revived the Soviet-era Moskvich car, but sources told Reuters the Moskvich 3 model was a Sehol X4 made by JAC Motors, assembled in Moscow using kits purchased from a Chinese partner.

Dongfeng and Stellantis, the world's third-largest automaker by revenue, operate a commercial joint venture in China, through which Dongfeng can build and sell Stellantis cars in China.

Chinese carmakers have been plugging the gaps left in Russia by their departing Western competitors, but sales of Chinese cars appear to have peaked at more than 56% of the market as Russia's domestic production slightly recovered.
