More Dinosaur Jr

Alternative rock luminaries Dinosaur Jr. are returning to Australia in 2024 for the first time in seven years, celebrating 30 years of their fifth album, Where You Been .

The only album between 1988’s Bug and 2007’s Beyond to be recorded with a full band, Where You Been sold 263,000 units in the US alone following its February 1993 release.

Dinosaur Jr’s upcoming headline tour begins at Sydney’s Enmore Theatre on Wednesday, 21 February, before heading to The Tivoli in Brisbane on Friday, 23 February, then to Adelaide’s Hindley Street Music Hall on Monday, 26 February, and to Perth’s Astor Theatre on Wednesday, 28 February, before concluding their tour at Auckland’s Town Hall on Saturday, 2 March.

Melbourne-based fans, don’t despair: while Frontier Touring presents the headline dates, Dinosaur Jr are also heading to Victoria to headline Geelong’s Tent Pole Festival on Saturday, 17 February.

The band, led by vocalist, guitarist and primary songwriter J Mascis , drummer Murph , and bassist Lou Barlow , front a line-up that also boasts Mogwai, Calexico, Cash Savage & The Last Drinks, RVG, Civic and more, all heading to the Mt Duneed Estate.

“As soon as the lights go down, the uproar is almost as deafening as the music itself,” The Music reviewer Joe Dolan recalled about Dinosaur Jr.’s last gig at Melbourne’s Croxton Bandroom in February 2017.

Dolan continued, “It’s naught to 100 in an instant for Dinosaur Jr., and even as the boys all tick past their half centuries, they have never slowed down or let their age hinder their energy. The raw power, the liveliness and the all-important noise, this is early ‘90s grunge on the eve of the Trump inauguration; perhaps more relevant now than it ever has been.”

Pre-sale tickets for Tent Pole Festival go on sale on Monday, 9 October. You can find more ticketing information on the festival website .

Meanwhile, Frontier Members can access pre-sale tickets for Dinosaur Jr’s headline tour on Thursday, 5 October, at 2 pm local time. The general public sale opens on Tuesday, 10 October, at 2 pm local time. Tickets will be available here .

Massachusetts alt-rock band Dinosaur Jr. will be celebrating the 30th anniversary of their fifth album, Where You Been , on their 2024 Australian tour. The band, led by guitarist and vocalist J Mascis along with bass player and occasional vocalist Lou Barlow and drummer Murph, will perform shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth throughout February 2023.

As part of the tour, Dinosaur Jr. will headline Tent Pole: A Musical Jamboree , which is happening at Mt Duneed Estate, just outside of Geelong, on Saturday, 17th February. The lineup also includes Scottish post rock act Mogwai and Latin-infused indie rock band Calexico .

Dinosaur Jr.’s Where You Been Turns 30

Dinosaur Jr. released Where You Been in February 1993. It followed their breakout releases You’re Living All Over Me (1987) and Bug (1988). The trio will be performing Where You Been in full on the Australian tour. The band recently announced four consecutive shows at London venue The Garage , where they’ll be honouring the legacy of Where You Been this November.

Frontier Touring are thrilled to welcome legendary US rock band  Dinosaur Jr.  as they make their return to Australia & New Zealand for a series of headline shows in February & March 2024.

Last in Australia in 2017, performing shows across the country, with a reputation as one of the formative influences on American alternative rock, Dinosaur Jr. - J Mascis (guitar, vocals, primary songwriter), Lou Barlow (bass, vocals), and Murph (drums) – are ready to bring the classics down under. With over 14 albums to date and more than 30 years performing live on stage as a band, Dinosaur Jr are bringing their best live set to date to Australia & New Zealand.

Recently releasing their latest live album Emptiness At The Sinclair , recorded at the Sinclair in Cambridge, Massachusetts, Dinosaur Jr. proved yet again their musicality and artistry only continues to soar with Post Trash claiming “all of it is high quality…the ferocity and devotion of a Dinosaur Jr live show is still there, and as usual, sometimes you cannot make out the difference whether it is a live rendition or a studio version.”

With a signature sound that transcends generations, their 2021 project Sweep It Into Space saw the band continue to expand their personal universe without ever losing their central core.

“still doing what they do best” ★★★★ The Guardian

“the classic trio’s latest reunion album is their breeziest and most melodically generous yet - Pitchfork

2023 marks a special year for the band. Celebrating 30 years since the release of their influential 1993 grunge album Where You Been , they headed on tour across the globe, including five upcoming sold-out headline shows at The Garage London as well as multiple sellout dates across the US. The band have also performed festival slots at Spain’s Primavera Weekender, Germany’s Rolling Stone Beach and Mempho Music Hall in Memphis this year.

With a live performance to remember and a sprawling discography of hits, don’t miss out on these highly-anticipated Dinosaur Jr. shows as they make their way across Australia and New Zealand next February & March.

The legendary Dinosaur Jr. will be back in Australia early next year for their first tour of the country in seven years.

Their return is always reason to celebrate, but news that they'll be here playing their classic 1993 album Where You Been in its entirety takes the excitement to a whole new level.

The record was released amid the post- Nevermind grunge explosion and is one of the most immediate and accessible albums in the band's extensive and excellent catalogue. It was lauded upon its release and it's still help in high regard today, with its searing guitars and sticky pop hooks.

Dinosaur Jr. remain one of the great live rock bands around. They're loud, they're no-nonsense, and they're the kind of band who will transport you into a whole new dimension if your let J Mascis' guitar work take over. If you've never seen them: you just have to do it.

Update:  The band will headline Geelong's Tent Pole festival . Geelong's Tent Pole festival has been cancelled, with promoters citing "the current economic climate coupled with the difficulties associated with establishing a new regional festival has made it impossible for us to proceed." ( More info here .)

Dinosaur Jr. will now kick off their tour with a second Melbourne show on Saturday 17 February before playing theatres in four capital cities through the back end of February.

Additionally, J. Mascis has lined up some some solo shows in Sydney and Brisbane. ( More info here ).
