UN Tourism: International tourist arrivals hit 96% of pre-pandemic levels as of Jul-2024
UN Tourism reported (19-Sep-2024) the following highlights from its World Tourism Barometer:
- International tourism recovered to 96% of pre-pandemic levels for the seven months to Jul-2024, driven by strong demand in Europe and the reopening of markets in Asia Pacific ;
- Around 790 million tourists travelled internationally in the first seven months of 2024, approximately 11% more than 2023 and only 4% less than in 2019;
- All regions recorded "a strong year so far", supported by increased air connectivity and visa facilitation;
- The Middle East remained the strongest growing region, with international arrivals climbing 26% above 2019 levels in the first seven months of 2024. Africa welcomed 7% more tourists than in 2019, Europe recovered to 99% of pre-pandemic arrivals, the Americas reached 97% and Asia Pacific recorded 82% of pre-pandemic tourist numbers, reaching 85% in Jun-2024 and 86% in Jul-2024;
- 67 out of 120 destinations had recovered to 2019 arrival numbers in 1H2024, based on countries reporting monthly or quarterly data. Some of the strongest performers were Qatar (+147% vs 2019), Albania (+93%), El Salvador (+81%), Saudi Arabia (+73%), Moldova (+50% as of Jun-2024) and Tanzania (+49% as of Jun-2024);
- Data on international tourism expenditure reveals strong demand for outbound travel in 1H2024, especially from large source markets such as the US (+32%), Germany (+38%) and the UK (+40% as of Mar-2024), compared to 2019.
UN Tourism secretary general Zurab Pololikashvili stated: "International tourism is on track to consolidate its full recovery from the biggest crisis in the sector's history". Mr Pololikashvili said: "The ongoing rebound comes despite a range of economic and geopolitical challenges, highlighting the strong demand for international travel as well as the effectiveness of boosting air connections and easing visa restrictions". He added: "This recovery also highlights the growing need for tourism planning and managing to cater for its impacts on communities in a way that the immense socio-economic benefits are paired with inclusive and sustainable policies". Việt nam hits target of welcoming 12.5 million international arrivals in 2023: tourism authority.
HÀ NỘI — Việt Nam’s target of welcoming 12.5 million to 13 million international arrivals in 2023 has been achieved, said Phạm Văn Thủy, deputy head of Việt Nam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), said at a conference on State tourism management on Thursday.
He said after being severely affected by the COVID-19 pandemic for two years, Vietnamese tourism had made a recovery, gained momentum and achieved results as expected.
In the first 10 months of this year, the number of foreign arrivals to Việt Nam surpassed the 8-million target. Việt Nam then increased the international arrival target to 12.5-13 million, and had accomplished the goal, he said.
According to VNAT, the number of international arrivals to Việt Nam in 2023 is estimated at 12.5 million. The country also welcomed 108 million domestic arrivals.
Total revenue from tourism is estimated to reach VNĐ672 trillion. The competitiveness of Việt Nam’s tourism continues to be enhanced globally.
This year the VNAT was honoured to receive the title "Asia's Leading Tourism Management Agency " for the fourth time. Việt Nam was honoured by the World Travel Awards as the world's leading heritage destination, while many destinations and tourism businesses received other prestigious award categories.
Thủy said Việt Nam still needed solutions to remove bottlenecks and tackle shortcomings in State management and tourism business.
He cited foreigners working illegally as tour guides or Vietnamese businesses violating tourism business laws as examples of the dark side of Vietnamese tourism.
He said some tourist destinations remained unclean without ensuring security or safe conditions. Việt Nam had not hosted any impressive large-scale national tourism promotion programme that brings together localities and businesses.
The VNAT proposed strengthening management at tourist destinations, preserving and promoting natural and cultural values for sustainable tourism development. Tourism sites must ensure security and safety for tourists, pay special attention to environmental sanitation and food hygiene, while encouraging the participation of local people and businesses in building a cultural, civilised, friendly and hospitable tourism environment to make every citizen a tourism ambassador.
The authority also proposed promoting tourism linkage among localities in which the VNAT, as the national tourism agency, takes the orientation role and big tourism hubs such as Hà Nội, Đà Nẵng, HCM City, Cần Thơ, Quảng Ninh, Ninh Bình, Thừa Thiên Huế and Khánh Hòa would act as leaders in creating regional tourism growth drivers and making “one tour, multiple destinations”.
Hà Nội sees incredible surge
The capital Hà Nội enjoyed an incredible surge in the total number of tourists in 2023, with 24 million visitors coming to the city.
This figure represents a remarkable 27 per cent increase compared to the previous year and a heartening 83 per cent of the pre-pandemic levels recorded in 2019. This not only breathes new life into the local economy but also showcases the city's enduring charm as a travel destination.
International visitors to Hà Nội surged, one of the city’s standout tourism achievements in 2023, totalling 4 million. This marks an impressive 138.1 per cent increase compared to the prior year and a significant rebound, reaching 57 per cent of the pre-pandemic levels in 2019. The influx of international tourists reflects Hà Nội's resilience and its capacity to draw global travellers, even amid global uncertainties.
The city welcomed 20 million domestic visitors in 2023, reflecting a 16 per cent increase from the previous year and an impressive 91 per cent recovery compared to the pre-pandemic levels of 2019. This surge in domestic tourism highlights the growing interest of locals in exploring the cultural and historical treasures within their own country. —VNS

International tourist arrivals hit 8.26 million
INTERNATIONAL tourist arrivals reached 8.26 million in 2019, exceeding its 8.2 million full-year target, the Department of Tourism (DoT) reported on Monday.
However, industry stakeholders are bracing themselves for a decline in international tourist arrivals this year as many have canceled or are putting off travel due to fears over the continued spread of the pneumonia-like coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19).
In a statement, the DoT said the annual tourist arrivals figure was 15.24% higher than the previous year’s 7.17 million.
“Almost all months, except January, registered double-digit growth rates, the largest of which was August at 27.54%, while December recorded the highest volume at 776,798,’’ the DoT said in a statement on Monday.
The country hosted the 2019 Southeast Asian Games from Nov. 30 to Dec. 11, a sporting event that attracted athletes and tourists from neighboring Southeast Asian countries.
DoT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat said annual tourist arrivals breached the eight millionth mark, thanks to the department’s “convergence programs with other government agencies, particularly in improving access as well as product development and marketing initiatives with local government and private sector.”
“These gains we hope to sustain even as we face global challenges,” Ms. Puyat was quoted as saying in a statement.
“This is a high point for Philippine tourism as it depicts our solidarity and commitment to make tourism work and prove its full potential as a sustainable and inclusive economic activity,” she added.
South Korean tourists continued to flock to the Philippines, as DoT data showed a 22.48% annual increase to 1.98 million. South Korea has been the top source market since 2010.
Chinese tourist arrivals surged 38.58% to 1.74 million in 2019 — the fastest pace among the 12 visitor markets cited by the DoT.
United States was the third-biggest source of visitors with 1.06 million, up 2.90%. This was followed by Japan with 682,788 arrivals (up 8.07%), and Taiwan with 327,273 arrivals (up 35.01%).
Australia ranked the sixth-biggest source of visitors with 286,170 (up 2.27%), followed by Canada with 238,850 (up 5.48%), and the United Kingdom with 209,206 (up 4.06).
On the other hand, tourist arrivals from Singapore and Malaysia slipped by 7.68% and 3.69% to 158,595 and 139,882, respectively.
The country, however, appears unlikely to surpass or even match last year’s record-breaking international tourist arrivals figure, as the Covid-19 outbreak continues to dampen global travel.
Ms. Puyat earlier acknowledged the tourism industry could lose P42.9 billion from February to April — P16.8 billion this month, P14.11 billion in March and P11.98 billion in April.
Despite this, she said the DoT is still targeting to attract 9.2 million international visitor arrivals this year.
Tourism Congress of the Philippines President Jose C. Clemente III said it is “too early” to determine how the full-year tourist arrivals target will be affected by the COVID-19 outbreak.
“(For the first quarter) definitely, it’s going to be affected. Sabihin na natin na it’s safe to say it will probably be down by about 30%, just to be safe about it, from [the first quarter] of the previous year’s arrivals,” Mr. Clemente, who is also president of Rajah Tours Philippines, Inc., said in a phone interview.
The Philippines has three confirmed cases of COVID-19, including one death, all involving Chinese nationals. More than 400 people have been checked for infection, more than half of whom had been confined, according to health authorities. — Arjay L. Balinbin
