Gurugram To Get 'World's Largest Safari', Park To Cover Over 10,000 Acres

Haryana to develop world's largest jungle safari in the Aravalli range in Gurgaon.

Haryana will develop the world's largest jungle safari park in the Aravalli range, the state government said in a statement today.

The 10,000-acre safari park will cover Gurugram and Nuh districts. "This project will be the largest such project in the world," it said.

At present, Sharjah is home to the largest curated safari park outside Africa. Opened in February 2022, the Sharjah Safari covers an area of about 2,000 acres.

"The proposed Aravalli park would be five times more this size and it would include a large herpetarium (a zoological exhibition space for reptiles and amphibians), aviary/bird park, four zones for big cats, a large area for herbivores, an area for exotic animal birds, an underwater world, nature trails, visitors, tourism zones, botanical gardens, biomes, equatorial, tropical, coastal, desert, etc," the government said in the statement.

Union Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar visited Sharjah Safari in this regard, the state government said.

Manohar Khattar reached Dubai on a day's visit on Wednesday. Upon his return on Thursday, Mr Khattar said the NCR region of Haryana had immense potential for the development of a jungle safari.

The Jungle safari scheme will not only boost tourism but also provide employment opportunities to local residents, he said.

"The Jungle safari project of Haryana would be a joint project of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Haryana government. Under the scheme, the central government will also provide funds to Haryana for the project," said Mr Khattar.

A global Expression of Interest was floated for the project and two companies with international experience in designing and operating such facilities have been shortlisted, the chief minister added.

"The companies will now compete in an international design competition for the designing, overseeing and operating of the park. An Aravalli Foundation will be set up to manage the project," said Mr Khattar.

The chief minister added that the Central Zoo Authority had done an evaluation study of the area and agreed on the technical feasibility of setting up such a park.

On one hand, developing a jungle safari will help preserve the Aravalli mountain range while a large number of people from Delhi and adjoining areas will come for tourism, creating ample employment opportunities for local residents, he said.

"Furthermore, villagers in the surrounding villages will be benefited from the Home Stay Policy," said the chief minister.

The Aravalli mountain range is home to many species of birds, wild animals and butterflies.

According to the Haryana government statement, as per a survey conducted a few years ago, 180 species of birds, 15 species of mammals, 29 species of aquatic animals and reptiles and 57 species of butterflies were found in the Aravalli range.

Totally Wild: All about the world’s largest safari park coming up in Gurugram

Indians no longer need to visit Africa to get a taste of the wild as the Haryana state government will develop the world’s largest jungle safari park in Gurugram.

According to a statement released by the state government, the safari park will cover 10,000-acres of land in the Gurugram and Nuh districts. “This project will be the largest such project in the world,” it said.

pic.twitter.com/4oNHUu4snm — Manohar Lal (@mlkhattar) September 29, 2022

The park will come up on land protected under the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA) around the Aravalli Mountain Range.

Let’s take a closer look at the details of the park.

Features of the park

Covering an area of 10,000 acres, the safari park in Gurugram will be five times the size of the current largest Sharjah Safari in United Arab Emirates which spans an area of about 2,000 acres.

The state government statement says that the park will include a large herpetarium (a zoological exhibition space for reptiles and amphibians), aviary or bird park, four zones for big cats, a large area for herbivores, an area for exotic animal birds, an underwater world, nature trails, visitors, tourism zones, botanical gardens, biomes, equatorial, tropical, coastal and desert.

According to a report by Hindustan Times , the safari park will be home to species like gazelles, antelopes, deer and carnivores like leopards and hyenas, which are already native to the region.

The onus of steering the project has been given to SP Yadav, additional director general of forests at the Union Environment Ministry. Haryana tourism officials informed that drone imaging of the Gurugram portion of the project has been completed. The process of demarcation of the area of both Gurugram and Nuh districts would soon begin.

Chief Minister of Haryana, Manohar Lal Khattar said, “The Jungle safari project of Haryana would be a joint project of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and the Haryana government. Under the scheme, the central government will also provide funds to Haryana for the project”.

A global Expression of Interest was floated for the project and two companies with international experience in designing and operating such facilities have been shortlisted, according to a PTI report.

Central Zoo Authority gives green signal

Central Zoo Authority (CZA) officials who had visited the sites proposed for the safari park noted that there is adequate land of appropriate quality and that there is scope for constructing tree belts which will act as a buffer against noise and air pollution.

The CZA guidelines recommend that carnivore safaris should have a minimum area of 20 hectares while herbivore safaris should have 20 hectares of area, as per Hindustan Times .

Chief Minister Khattar said that CZA has agreed on the technical feasibility of setting up such a park after their evaluation of the area.

Safari Park will boost employment

Apart from giving wildlife lovers an opportunity to witness the life of animals up close, the state government claims that the Jungle safari scheme will provide employment opportunities to local residents in the region.

Khattar said, “On one hand, developing a jungle safari will help preserve the Aravalli Mountain range while a large number of people from Delhi and adjoining areas will come for tourism, creating ample employment opportunities for local residents.”

A senior government official told Hindustan Times that the Safari project, which will be the largest man-made safari park in the world will help conserve the biodiversity of the Aravalli hills.

According to the Haryana government statement, as per a survey conducted a few years ago, 180 species of birds, 15 species of mammals, 29 species of aquatic animals and reptiles and 57 species of butterflies were found in the Aravalli range.

Gurugram Safari park will beat Sharjah

Union Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav and Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal made a two-day visit to UAE to assess the current largest safari park Sharjah, which was opened in February 2022.

Upon his return on Thursday, Khattar said the NCR region of Haryana had immense potential for the development of a jungle safari.

According to its official website, Sharjah Safari is host to more than 50,000 animals, birds, reptiles and mammals like lions, elephants, giraffes, black and white rhinoceros, crocodiles, deer, bulls and many other endangered animals.

The park has 12 themed environments and each of these depict an African location. The safari park is mirrored to an actual African jungle safari and the land has around 1,000 native and African trees, as per Curly Tales .

What will a jungle safari in Gurgaon’s Aravallis look like?

Project would include a large herpetarium, aviary, four zones for big cats, nature trails, and much more.

Gurgaon district administration Monday said the process to identify 6,000 acres of land in Gurgaon for the proposed jungle safari park— reportedly the largest outside Africa and spread across 10,000 acres — in the Aravalli range covering Gurgaon and Nuh, has been completed.

Last week, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar said that Haryana will develop a curated jungle safari park spread over 10,000 acres in the Aravalli range. After returning from Dubai, where he and Union Minister for Forest, Environment and Climate Change Bhupender Yadav visited the Sharjah Safari, Khattar said the proposed safari would include a large herpetarium (a zoological exhibition space for reptiles and amphibians), aviary/bird park, four zones for big cats, a large area for herbivores, an area for exotic animal birds, an underwater world, nature trails, visitors, tourism zones, botanical gardens, biomes, equatorial, tropical, coastal, and desert areas, adding that the safari would boost tourism and generate employment opportunities to locals.

jungle safari park gurugram

Forest department officials said the proposed safari will have designated zones, which would be fenced, and large enclosures for tigers, lions and leopards that will be relocated from zoos. An official said a jungle safari in the region would help protect wildlife. “The central zoo authority has done an evaluation study of the area and found it technically feasible for setting up a safari park,” the official said.

Gurgaon deputy commissioner Nishant Kumar Yadav said, “More than 6,000 acres of the proposed jungle safari falls in the Gurgaon district. The area earmarked includes land in ten villages — Shikohpur, Bar Gujjar, Nauranpur, Tikri, Aklimpur, Gairatpur Bass, Sakatpur, Ghamroj, Bhondsi and Alipur. The land will be given on a lease for 33 years. Requisite resolutions will be passed for availability of land falling under the municipal corporation and gram panchayats and gram sabha jurisdictions. If there are any encroachments in the area demarcated for the safari project, the forest department will get them removed by sending notice as the area of Aravalli comes under the Punjab Land Preservation Act (PLPA). A majority of the area identified is free from encroachment.”

The proposed safari project has evoked mixed responses among environmentalists and wildlife conservation experts.

Festive offer

On September 22, a group of environmentalists from Gurgaon had written to senior officials of the Haryana government demanding withdrawal of the expression of interest for the international design competition for the development of Aravalli Safari Park, stating that activities proposed under the project would damage the flora and fauna of the region. The environmentalists said that there were apprehensions that in the name of conservation, the project could pave the way for more non-forest activity in the Aravalli region in future.

“Undertaking such activities is also a violation of the Forest (Conservation) Act, 1980. We will file a petition in the NGT to challenge it,” said Vaishali Rana, an environmentalist.

However, a city-based environment and forest analyst said that the project was a welcome move. “If we are able to conserve a large area spread across 9,000 acres, then it is an acceptable trade-off. The project has to be developed while being sensitive to the wildlife and ecology of the region. It is hoped and expected that a bulk of the area under the project actually goes into conservation. The contours and specifications of the policy and conservation element of the safari are yet to be exactly known,” said the expert.

Gurugram’s Aravali Region to Welcome ‘Leopard Park’ and Jungle Safari on 15-Kilometer Stretch

A comprehensive plan to protect a 15-kilometer stretch of the Aravalli Hills, spanning from the Bandhwari landfill to Damdama Lake in Gurugram, is set to unfold, including the establishment of a remarkable “Leopard Park” in Behrampur village.

This ambitious endeavor, a joint effort by the forest department, district administration, Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), and Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG), is primarily focused on creating a 15-kilometer jungle trail connecting these two designated points.

The region in question has been vulnerable to encroachments by private landowners who have sometimes disregarded construction regulations. Drawing inspiration from the successful Jhalana Leopard Safari Park in Jaipur, the concept of the Leopard Park aims to mitigate incidents of leopards straying into urban areas. The GMDA has also revealed plans to conduct a feasibility study for the introduction of a leopard safari within the park.

This initiative has gained urgency due to various instances of human-wildlife conflicts in recent years, including the tragic lynching of a leopard in Mandawar in 2016 and numerous hit-and-run accidents resulting in the unfortunate demise of 12 leopards over a 15-year span.

According to reports, an organization will be tasked with conducting an extensive study of the Aravallis. The findings will then be presented to the Aravali Rejuvenation Board, overseen by the deputy commissioner, responsible for safeguarding the Aravali hills against activities like mining and environmental degradation.

The proposed leopard conservation zone is expected to include vital amenities such as watering holes and solar pumps for water supply, advanced camera traps, and the cultivation of indigenous grasslands. Additionally, plans are underway for a watchtower and an interpretation center to enhance the overall visitor experience.

To garner valuable insights for the Gurugram project, GMDA officials have organized an excursion to the Jhalana Leopard Park in November, inviting representatives from various government departments and development authorities. The overarching goal of the GMDA is to promote responsible eco-tourism and wildlife awareness without disrupting the natural habitat. Furthermore, involving the local community in the conservation of native flora and fauna is expected to reduce human-animal conflicts and create employment opportunities.

Leopards in the region frequently traverse between the Aravallis in Gurugram and Faridabad, the Asola Bhatti Wildlife Sanctuary in Delhi, and the Sariska Tiger Reserve in Rajasthan. However, rapid urbanization in these areas has significantly disrupted their natural habitats, resulting in an upsurge in conflicts between humans and leopards.

The number of confirmed leopard sightings in Gurugram and its neighboring districts has been steadily increasing in recent years. In 2022 alone, there were five confirmed sightings, compared to two each in 2020 and 2021, underscoring the urgent need for initiatives that promote coexistence and conservation.

A world-class 3800 hectares jungle safari will soon be started in the Aravalli mountain range in the Gurugram district.

During his visit to Gurugram, Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar and Union minister for environment, forest and climate change Bhupender Yadav held a discussion with officers of the forest and tourism department and gave necessary directions to the officials regarding the aforesaid project.

Presiding over the meeting, the CM directed the officers of the department of Haryana to work on the project in a planned manner by preparing a special purpose vehicle (SPV).

Khattar said a committee should be constituted to develop a world-class jungle safari, in which the deputy commissioners of Gurugram and Nuh and concerned panchayat development officers should also be included besides the officials of the tourism and forest departments.

The CM said to start the project jungle safari, suggestions should be sought from world-class experts and global tenders should be invited after the project’s outline is ready. He said that developing a jungle safari will help in preserving this mountain range, while on the other hand, a large number of people from Delhi and adjoining areas will visit the place for tourism purposes, which would further create employment opportunities for the local people. Villagers in the surrounding villages will also get benefits under the homestay policy.

In this meeting, officials of the forest department demonstrated through a PowerPoint presentation that the Aravalli mountain range is a cultural heritage where various species of birds, wild animals, butterflies, etc are found. According to a survey conducted a few years back, 180 species of birds, 15 species of mammals, reptiles, 29 species of aquatic animals, and 57 species of butterflies exist in the Aravalli mountain range.

In this presentation, about 3800 hectares (10,000 acres) of land falling in the Aravalli mountain range of Gurugram and Nuh districts has been proposed for Jungle Safari.

Union minister Yadav, who was present in the meeting, said that while preparing the jungle safari project, a place should also be identified for the parking of vehicles of tourists.

He said that people enjoying jungle safari will visit using battery-operated vehicles so that the environment of the Aravalli mountain range would not be destroyed.

Yadav assured any approval regarding the project would be taken on a priority basis.

The Sharjah Safari will occupy over 2,000 acres when it opens in February 2022. Haryana will create the world’s largest forest safari park in the Aravalli range, according to a statement issued by the state government today.

The planned Aravalli park would be five times larger and would include a large zoological exhibition space for reptiles and amphibians, a bird park, a group of big cats, a large area for herbivores, an area for exotic birds, an aquatic world, nature trails, visitors, tourism zones, botanical gardens, biomes, equatorial, tropical, coastal, desert, and so on.

How The Jungle Safari Boosts Tourism In Haryana

The Aravalli Mountain Range Is Home To Numerous Bird And Animal Species

The Haryana chief minister stated that the Central Zoo Authority had led an assessment of the site and agreed on the possibility of establishing such a forest park in the state.

On the one hand, establishing a jungle safari will contribute to the preservation of the Aravalli mountain range species, while a significant number of people from Delhi and other places will visit for tourism, creating enough job prospects for local inhabitants, he said.

“In addition, the home stay policy will benefit villagers in the neighbouring areas,” added the Haryana chief minister. The Aravalli mountain range is home to numerous birds, all species of wild animals, and exotic butterfly species.

According to the Haryana government statement, 180 species of birds, 15 species of mammals, 29 species of aquatic animals and reptiles, and 57 species of butterflies were found in the Aravalli range during a survey.

CM Khattar , dy CM conduct aerial inspection of jungle safari site at Aravallis

The cm and deputy cm were in gurugram on sunday for the inauguration of the sohna-dausa stretch of the delhi-mumbai expressway and it was during this visit that they conducted the survey of the proposed safari park, said district administration officials.

Haryana chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar and deputy chief minister Dushyant Chautala on Sunday conducted an aerial inspection of the area earmarked for the development of the world’s largest jungle park safari encompassing about 10,000 acres of the Aravallis in Gurugram and Nuh districts.

The chief minister also held a meeting with forest and district administration officials after the survey and gave necessary directions for demarking the areas and starting work on the project.

The CM and deputy CM were in Gurugram on Sunday for the inauguration of the Sohna-Dausa stretch of the Delhi-Mumbai Expressway and it was during this visit that they conducted the survey of the proposed safari park, said district administration officials.

According to the tourism department, the jungle park safari will be spread across Shikohpur, Sakatpur and Gairatpur Bas in Gurugram; across Ghamroj, Alipur, Aqlimpur, Tikli and Bhondsi, Naurangpur and Badgujjar villages in Bhondsi block; and across Kota Khandewala, Gagaini, Mohammadpur Ahir, Kharak, Jalalpur, Bhango and Chahika villages in the Mewat block.

In a statement issued by the district administration, chief minister Manohar Lal Khattar described the jungle safari project and the Delhi-Mumbai expressway as “economically sustainable and ecologically viable” projects.

Khattar said development of jungle safari in the area will help in preserving Aravalli mountain range, while also allowing a large number of people from Delhi and neighbouring areas to visit the park and help the local population in getting ample employment opportunities.

“The state government has formulated a home stay policy with the aim of promoting tourism in Haryana and providing employment opportunities to villagers. Under this, tourists will also get a chance to get acquainted with the local culture,” he said.

Senior government officials further said the jungle safari will promote the local landscape and no changes will be made to the natural ecosystem. Only native trees will be planted in the 10,000 acres and it will depict the Aravalli landscape; will not be a controlled wildlife corridor, they insisted.
