How To Build A Simple Horse Stable In Minecraft

Horses are useful mobs in Minecraft that allow you to traverse great distances while saving both time and your hunger bar. While they can be tied to a fence post with a lead to keep them from running away, that method provides neither protection nor storage for their supplies. Instead, I’ll teach you how to make an easy horse stable that contains space for everything you need for your horses.

The resources used for this build are relatively easy to obtain, with the stone bricks being the most time-consuming to create. While they can be swapped for cobblestone, they provide the build with a certain charm that is well worth the time spent.

Building the Exterior of the Horse Stable

The exterior of the stable will be built in three main parts. The first part covers the basic structure of the walls, while the second discusses the roof and the third covers all of the extra details on the outside.

Stable Walls Tutorial

The horse stable will need a flat surface measuring 15 blocks wide by 15 blocks long.

On the front side of the stable, begin the walls by placing an oak log at each corner of the square. On the left side, place another oak log on the fifth block away from the corner. There should be four empty blocks between the newly placed oak log and the oak log on the corner.

Repeat this process on the right side. There should be three blocks of space between the two logs in the center, which will become the stable’s entrance later on.

Head over to the right or left side of the horse stable. Start at one of the already-placed corner blocks, then skip three spaces and place an oak log on the fourth.

Copy this on the opposite side of the same wall. There should be three spaces between each corner log and middle log and five empty spaces between the two center logs.

Repeat this on the opposite side, then copy the front side onto the back. The image below depicts the pillar placements, while the numbers represent the number of blocks between each oak log.

After placing all of the oak logs, make all of the logs on the front and back of the horse stable four blocks tall.

Then make the remaining four logs in the center of the left and right sides 5 blocks tall. These taller pillars are marked with stars in the diagram below.

Now add a single layer of stone bricks between each of the pillars, making sure to leave the center of the front empty for the entrance.

Head to the right side of the horse stable. Fill the 5-block area in the center with a layer of oak planks that is three blocks high. The oak planks should be one block lower than the logs in this area, but the same height as the log pillars everywhere else.

Repeat this on the other side.

Before moving onto the roof, the stripped oak pillars that help divide the interior need to be placed. There are four in total, and each aligns directly with the nearest pillar on the side and front and back walls.

These pillars will be raised five blocks high.

Connect each of these stripped oak pillars to the oak pillars on the sides using three stone brick blocks. The result will look like this.

From here, we’ll jump into building the roof as it will make completing the walls easier.

Building the Stable’s Roof

The roof is an M-shaped roof inspired by this image from Imgur . We’ll start by creating a stone brick outline, then fill in the rest of the roof with oak materials. At the horse stable’s entrance, place upside-down stone brick stairs against each oak pillar.

Place an upside-down stair between the two stone brick stairs.

Add stone brick stairs on top of the upside-down stairs on the left and right.

Place a stone brick block behind the stairs on top of the oak pillar.

Place stone brick stairs on top of the stone brick blocks.

Place another stone brick block behind the new stairs.

Continue the pattern by adding stone brick stairs on top of the block.

Place two stone brick blocks behind the newest staircase.

Start angling the roof back down by placing stone brick stairs against the second block.

Place a stone brick block beneath the stairs.

Place stone brick stairs against the block.

Add the stone brick block beneath the stairs, which should be on top of the corner pillar.

Add stone brick stairs against the block.

Place upside-down stone brick stairs beneath the stairs.

Finish the front by adding a slab at the top edge of the upside-down stairs.

To build the side, place a line of stone brick stairs extending from the lowest upright stairs to the oak pillar at the back corner.

Continue the roof by placing a row of upside-down stairs beneath this row.

It should look something like this.

Finish of this side of the roof’s frame by extending a row of slabs to that corner oak pillar.

Duplicate this on the other side. From the top, the roof should look like this.

To do the backside, copy the front of the roof while leaving the space beneath the center stairs empty.

Fill that space with a row of three stone brick blocks to close off the end. If you want to add a second entrance, you can mimic the front exactly instead.

Now that the frame is done, the roof just needs to be filled in! Work from the outside towards the center, starting by placing two rows of oak stairs.

Cover the peak of the roof with oak slabs to add a bit of height to the ceiling inside.

After the slabs, fill in two more rows of oak stairs. These should lay on top of the stripped oak pillars inside of the horse stable.

Add one more row of oak stairs.

Complete the center by adding a row of oak slabs down the middle.

Finish the other side of the roof in the same way, and you’re done!

For a little extra contrast, you can choose to substitute the oak slabs in the center for stone brick slabs.

Finishing the Exterior with Fences

Place three fence gates between the two center oak pillars. For extra protection, a second row of fence gates can be added above the first.

Fill in the wall on the right side with oak fences. This will allow you to see the horses freely while keeping them safe from danger. They can also be used to tie up horses inside or outside of the stable.

Duplicate the fences on the left side.

On the sides of the horse stable, add two rows of fences in each hole. There will be a gap between the top of the fences and the wall, but this will be fixed while working on the interior.

On the back, add fence walls identical to those on the front.

Finish off the exterior by adding two rows of fence gates in the center of the back. This will keep the horse stable protected and can be used as an exit in a pinch.

Building the Inside of the Stable

While the structure is finished, the inside of the horse stable feels bare.

To spruce it up, use a shovel to create a three-block-wide path from the entrance to the back wall.

Then add a row of three fence gates between the first two pillars. This will divide the first two stalls from the path.

Do the same at the two stalls in the back.

From here, add a row of fences on top of the stone bricks on the side of each stall. These fences will prevent the horses from escaping.

Next, add a light source! Here I used lanterns, placing the first set on the ceiling right next to the door, the second set six blocks away, and the last set right next to the back wall. There should be five blocks between the center lanterns and the front and back lanterns.

Now we’ll fix the small gap in the back of each stall by adding oak slabs on top of the fences. Do this for all four stalls.

Choose either the left or right middle section to use as a storage room. Here I added a spruce plank flooring, eight double chests, and four glowing item frames. I also added two lanterns in the alcove above the chests.

I filled the other center section with hay bales to make the stable appear more realistic.

Lastly, I added a cauldron with water and a bale of hay in each horse stall. Be careful about the placement, as high-jumping horses will potentially be able to escape by jumping off of these items.

At the end, the stables will look something like this!

If you aren’t one for using cars in Minecraft, then horses are your next best thing to travel quickly. Especially if you breed up a good horse that has high-speed levels. Of course, breeding horses requires having space for the horses, which means horse stables. Here are some ideas to make your horse stables the best they can be for all your horses and even your friend’s horses.

What are the best ways to build a horse stable in Minecraft?

Large horse stable.

This stable is a unique style with a lot of floor space in the back, being able to hold around six, seven, or maybe even eight horses. In the front of the stables is a nice open walkway which you could decorate with any type of stone flooring to make it a little fancier. You can also either leave the back stables open or close them off if you don’t want the horses moving around such a big area. This design style idea would be good for people who plan to horse their own and their friends’ horses in their stable.

Inside horse stable

Moving your horse stables inside can be a tricky thing if you haven’t allowed yourself enough space. Be sure when building your dream stables that you plan out a big enough space for your horses. These stables can hold up to one, two, or even three horses in one stall. However, it will be harder to lead horses out without losing a few, so sometimes making slightly smaller stalls might be best if you have a lot of horses. You can also add nice little glass windows to look in on your horses when doing other things around your Minecraft base.

Outdoor horse stable

With larger stables, or if you don’t have enough wood to make a barn, you can do this neat idea of making a big outdoor stable. This is simply made with just some fence. You can also get your horses some armor for extra protection. Fun fact: you can die leather horse armor to whatever color you want, making it easy to find your favorite horse.

This tiny little hut-like stable is good if you just want one good horse to carry you through your trusted journeys. It is basically just a closed-off square with some fence, wood blocks, and some other items for decoration. You can add some lamps around it to give it some light in the darkness and keep Creepers away.

Second-story horse stable

Collecting horses is something many Minecraft players do, but of course, you need somewhere to keep them safe and out of harm’s way. A good trick is to make a second-story barn, with many stables on each floor allowing you to hold even more horses than basic stable designs. This will also give you a lot of space for decorating as well.

Simple outdoor stable

If you don’t want anything too fancy and want your horse stable to not be too closed off for whatever reason, this could be a good stable choice for you. Especially if you don’t have a ton of materials. This is made with wood, stone fences, and slabs. Add a couple of lanterns and your horse will be safe from Creepers and other mobs.

Very simple stable

Lastly, if you are very, very short on materials but still want a horse stable that will keep your horse safe, all you will need is to build a fence in a square and throw up some pillars around it for the roof. This can save you materials to then use on your horse or crafting other needed items. Something you can do to help you easily take care of your horse is grow carrots beside the stable.

How to Build a Stable in Minecraft

A base or a farm is nothing without its stables. A stable is where you can leave your mounts and animals to rest in a safe area and its where you keep their food and gear.

In Minecraft you can have several different types of mounts:

Regardless of what your favorite way of transportation is, knowing how to build a stable in Minecraft can be a perfect way to keep your dear mount safe and pampered.

Building a Simple Stable

A stable doesn’t have to be some grand build, unless you want it to be. If you have just a single Horse or Llama that you prefer to ride around you can build them a simple little home.

Like with most builds you can choose the color and material scheme. For stables I always prefer to use a mix of regular oak wood and spruce wood, with some dark oak wood for accents.

The horse will need enough space. If the stable is too small for the horse there’s chances that it won’t be able to enter it. If the roof of the stable is too low it can also cause issues for the Player, because once you mount your horse there’s a chance you can suffocate in the roof.

A horse in Minecraft is just over 1 and a half blocks tall and a llama is around 1.8 blocks tall. This means that when either is mounted the Player reaches about 2 blocks of height.

Ideally you will want at least 3 or more blocks of space above your animal.

I start by using two Spruce Logs as the main beams of the stable. I make them 4 blocks tall. That is my starting point. The area I’m working with is going to be 5×6. I surround 3 sides with the spruce logs with an oak fence on top.

One side I leave open for an oak fence and the two oak fence gates. You will need two gates because a single one is too small for a horse to walk through.

The roof can look however you want it. It can be flat, A-shaped, or as I prefer it, slanted.

The last thing left is the floor. I replace the grass blocks with dirt paths, podzol, and hay or with mud .

Once that is all done I just ride my horse inside to make sure that my character doesn’t hit anything while doing so and doesn’t suffocate. When I see everything is alright I simply decorate outside and around the stable.

You can also make a row of these smaller stables, connecting them via the roof as you get more horses or other mounts.

Building a Large Stable in Minecraft

There’s many different horses to tame in Minecraft, but also llamas and pigs which you can ride. So, sometimes a small stable won’t cut it nor fit them all in together.

For the large stable I will follow a similar color and material scheme like I did with the small one.

For this it’s useful to know how to save your Toolbar in Minecraft because it helped me to not forget any materials between my builds.

Like before I first outline the area I wish to work with. I have 5 horses and 1 llama that I wish to house here, but not just that. I also want to store their armor, saddles, and the wheat that I feed them with.

I outline a 14×20 block area using spruce logs. I make sure there’s enough space for both the pens and a 2 block wide path between them.

I build the pens the same as I did on my smaller stable, using spruce logs and oak fences on top.

Since I am using spruce logs I would have needed to do a lot of chopping to get all of it. If you don’t feel like doing all of that manual work it might be useful to try some of the item duping techniques in Minecraft .

In total the middle pillars are 7 blocks tall. In the back of the stable, at 3 blocks of height I placed oak slabs to build a loft. This is where I’ll put down hay blocks, but also chests with the wheat and gear.

The loft itself is a minimal of 2 blocks tall at the sides where it connects with the roof, that way the player can fit inside.

The overall space doesn’t need to be large since it’ll only house a few barrels and chests.

The pillars directly connected to the loft will be lined with Ladders on the side of each of them so the loft can be accessed that way. The pens under the loft are a bit smaller and intended for the llama mounts.

After this I work on the roof, using birch stairs and birch slabs to make an outline and help me figure out the general shape of the roof. I don’t want the roof to be too steep and I want to make sure that it reaches from the center past the side walls.

When that outline is done I fill in the middle using dark oak stairs and dark oak slabs inside the outline, following the already set layout.

Once that is done all that is left is building the walls using spruce planks.

For decoration I use various things. From barrels and chests, to lanterns and vines around the outside. Make sure everything is well lit so you don’t have to worry about hostile Mobs.

Adding Details

Sometimes a large build like this one can seem rather cube-like. Adding some details to a build can help break that shape and add more life and volume to a build.

My favorite way to add detail is usually to make a build look a little rustic or worn down. This is pretty easily achieved using stairs. Replacing some of the plank blocks with stairs makes it look like there’s holes and dents in a wall.

Another way to use stairs is to make it seem like the windows have depth.

Using some trap doors or oak fences I close up the windows and make shutters.

On the inside I use composters as pretend troughs for food. The floors I line with dirt path, podzol, coarse dirt, and hay to add texture.

You can even put down buttons to make it seem like the dirt is stirred around or there’s pebbles.

On the outside you can add additional pens for the animals. Something like an area where the horses and llamas can walk around freely may be good.

Additionally you can have a pig pen for your pig mounts if you have any.

The closer the stable is to the rest of your farm the better. This way you can incorporate different builds together.

A horse is a nice animal to tame in Minecraft. They carry you great distances, help haul your things, and they’re somewhat easy to find, if you spawn in a plains or savannah biome. They're perfectly fine with or without shelter, but if you want to put a roof over their head, it’s really easy to build them a nice little stable to stay in while you’re not going on adventures!

Things You Should Know

• Stack 3 wood blocks in each corner to lay out the 4 corner posts.
• Fence in 3 of the 4 sides with wood planks. Add planks to the top pillar.
• Surround the walls with slabs and fill in the middle with wood blocks.

Building a Horse Stable

• You can use any combination of wood types for your materials. You want to create a really vibrant-looking stable!
