Mara Serena Safari Lodge

Lodge location Mara Triangle

A major destination hotel styled as a mud-hut village.

Mara Serena is the largest property in the Mara Triangle - a section of the Masai Mara National Reserve renowned for its animal preservation efforts. The 510km2 Mara Triangle is home to most of the 30-strong population of black rhinos in the Masai Mara National Reserve. Unlike smaller-scale camps, Mara Serena presents 74 rooms and is a popular choice with families, who appreciate the benefits of staying in a hotel complex, such as a fenced perimeter and popular central pool.

At a glance

Catch a balloon, game drives, rooms with a view, sensational wildlife viewing, treat yourself, bring the family, meet your hosts, nearest airport, stay connected, a view with a room.

Plenty has changed since the 1970s in Kenya, when Mara Serena Safari Lodge first opened its doors, and the hotel holds onto the charm of its 1970s roots, while also celebrating the progress Kenya’s conservationists have achieved over the decades. Celebrating the 1970s and if orange and earthy brown hues are your palette of choice, Mara Serena is your masterclass in interior design. Fashioned after the typical mud-hut villages nearby, the hotel’s 74 rooms are naturally molded and hark back to simpler times. The zany earthship decor will feature in as many of your vacation photos as the majestic animals in the reserve, and the service and personal care and attention from staff leaves nothing to be desired. And the natural environment in which the hotel is set leaves no doubt why this large hotel continues to be a top choice for visitors staying in the Masai Mara.

The hotel itself is positioned on the top of Ol Donyo Oseiya hill, with rooms built into the hillside in a flowing fashion - there are lots of stairs leading up and down little hills throughout the hotel, so some guests may prefer to request rooms closest to the main reception lobby. The rooms themselves are simple and unfussy, with space for a king-double bed or arranged in a twin-bed configuration. A third bed can be arranged by request. Rooms feature a basic en-suite bathroom, with a shower cubicle, sink and flushing toilet.

The communal bar and dining areas feature traditional Maasai wood carvings, which can also be seen in local communities and bought from craft shops as souvenirs. Guests enjoy the use of the 2.4m deep swimming pool, where staff also serve drinks and snacks in a relaxed setting. Thanks to the camp’s larger-than-most size, there’s always a lively atmosphere around the site, with plenty of opportunities to meet fellow travellers and make friends from across the globe. Teenage guests, who enjoy the sense of freedom that newfound friendships can bring, particularly appreciated this, along with the space to spend time bonding with family members without feeling trapped. Mara Serena is therefore an ideal family destination for a multi-generational trip that will be a highlight of the year for everyone.

Activities at Mara Serena Safari Lodge

Primarily, guests visit Mara Serena to partake in the game drives organized by the lodge. The expert driver guides are very familiar with the reserve and will take you to popular animal grazing grounds and watering holes. Besides the local concentration of black rhinos, you’ll also see lions, giraffes, elephants, and zebras in their natural habitat. The cohabitation of predators and prey can lead to some exciting scenes of Africa’s great wildlife in action. For something truly spectacular, arrange a hot-air balloon flight at dawn (at an additional cost). The hotel has its own hot-air balloon and launch site nearby the main lodge and to watch the hazy orange sun rise over the reserve as animals emerge for their first drink of the day is something you will remember forever. Visit in the July to October dry season to catch some of the impressive migration river crossings in the Mara Triangle. Beware the crocodiles, who put on a thrilling performance as wildebeest trample through the low-water rivers.

To understand something of the local culture, take the hotel’s Maasai village visit tour in which you’ll learn about day-to-day life for villagers, and may even watch a traditional ceremony. Combining the appeal of the cultural and natural excursions, special meal experiences are also on offer at the lodge, including a Hippo Pool Breakfast - served by the hotel’s chefs on the shady banks of the Mara River - and in the evening, enjoy a lantern-lit poolside barbeque.

Tripadvisor comments Mara Serena Safari Lodge

The architecture of the hotel is idiosyncratic & distinctive, but the views are fabulous from every part of the estate. The service was great and attentive; the food good and plentiful. The individual rooms are fun and have good views across the Mara. fergusongerry409 from Birmingham, UK
Such a beautiful place to stay. Everyone was very welcoming! Rooms were very clean and uniquely designed. Each meal time had fresh hot and cold options available, however a lot of Indian dishes. Each room offered a beautiful view from the balcony. Dominique B

Your gold-level safari guide will be at JKIA, the hotel, or the apartment in Nairobi early in the morning departure time. The guide will welcome you, give you a short trip briefing so you know what to expect on day 1, and then welcome you to your 4×4 safari land cruiser.

You will then start your road trip from Nairobi to Maasai Mara, a 289km journey that will take about six hours. After about an hour and a half into our trip, the safari guide shall make a stopover at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint.

We invite you to take photos of the amazing landscape and enjoy the cool breeze of the area. You will then continue with the trip and stop in two hours at Narok town to do last-minute shopping, stretch or enjoy a cup of Kenyan tea.

After a brief stay in this town, you shall resume your journey to arrive at your stay , the Masai Mara Serena Safari Camp, in time of lunch. The guide will assist you in check-in your room and leave you to enjoy a sumptuous lunch you will choose from the Mara Serena menu.

You will also get an hour or so of relaxing and refreshing in your room as you take great views of the Maasai Mara Game Reserve. Your gold-level guide will then come to pick you up in time of the evening game drives at 3 pm.

The evening is an excellent time to get a glimpse of the animals as they relax in the cool of the evening. Occasionally, you may encounter an elusive leopard hiding in the shades or some buffaloes enjoying a fighting game.

Evenings at Maasai Mara Reserve are magical, with golden oars of the African sun warming your skin as you enjoy the game drives. The view of the mara is also out of this world and can be overwhelming at sunset.

As dusk comes, the safari guide will take you to the hotel for a night’s rest or even leave you to spend time at the swimming pool and other popular amenities at Serena Safari Lodge. Your private guide will let you relax and have a good evening.

We recommend an early nap so you are fresh enough since you have a full-day game drive at Maasai Mara the next day.

Day 2: Full-Day Game Drive at Masai Mara National Reserve with Packed Lunch

Day 2 of the mara trip offers you a chance to get up close and personal with the wildlife . Your guide will pick you up early so you can be in the jungle early and start today’s game drive

The sunrise game drive provides an excellent opportunity to catch the elusive cats as they pry the grasslands, readying for hunting. It is also the best time to spot the over 450 bird species and 99 Mammals and reptile species that reside in the Maasai Mara.

Day 3: Optional Hot Air Balloon/ Full-Day Game Drive at Masai Mara with Packed Lunch

The third day of the mara safari gives you a chance to view some rare moments that you may not have captured on the second day. These include a leopard hunting an impala, a gazelle giving birth, or buffaloes playing in the mud.

The expansive reserve provides varied experiences at different corners, and you will find many unique events in the only jungle in Maasai Mara. You may request an optional hot air balloon ride at USD 450 per person to see most of the reserve from a bird’s eye view. This is the only chance to see the Mara river from the top and appreciate this great time at Maasai Mara National Reserve.

By the end of the third day, expect to have seen countless bird species, the big five, and herbivores. Watch out for animals such as zebras, impalas, gazelles, crocodiles, and hippopotamuses (by the Mara river).

Hint: If you book this Mara Serena Safari Lodge Package between July and October, you will get a chance to view the Great Migration in Africa . The migration sees over 1.5M wildebeests , 500,000 zebras, and 200,000 impalas cross the Mara River from the Serengeti national reserve into the Maasai Mara National Reserve.

The apex predators such as cheetahs , lions, and crocodiles are always at hand to make a kill from the migration, allowing you to see many animals at once.

Day 4: Morning Game Drive, Masai Village Visit, & Transfer to Nairobi

Your trip is coming to an end, but not on a high note. You will check out of the hotel after an early breakfast with all your bags. You won’t be coming at Mara Serena Safari Lodge after game drives, so we recommend you leave a review of their services today if you are a TripAdvisor user.

We hope you had a great time at Serena Safari Lodge, the food was nice, the restaurant and rooms were clean, and the staff were very good. A review of the same will help other potential visitors to make their decision in the future.

The day starts with one dawn game drive, ideally to a location you have not visited before. You might capture some great moments at the reserve and check out of the Masai Mara at 10:30 am.

Your next stop will be Maasai Village. At this village, you will get a chance to learn the history and rich culture of the Masai as you purchase some curios to take home.

During the brief stay, you can learn how to make the Maasai fire, get adorned with glittering beadwork, or get a leather belt and a shuka to take home. Ensure you purchase something to take home as this goes a long way to help the community. The village has an amazing show of colors, smiling faces, and unique cultural experiences.

You shall embark on the road trip to JKIA/ Nairobi at around 11 am. You will see Kenya’s diverse landscape on your way to Nairobi . The best times to visit Tanzania are December through March or June through October during the dry seasons, when the game viewing is at its best. The rains usually last from April to May then occur again in November when there are fewer tourists and vegetation flourishes. During February, wildebeest are calving, giving you a front row seat to the baby's first moments in the savannah.

How much does a safari in Tanzania cost?

A mid-range safari with lodging runs $350 to $400 per person, per day while a high end luxury safari with all the trimmings ranges from $600 to about $1000 per person, per day. Read more about safari costs for Tanzania.

Kenya or Tanzania: which is better for safari?

Both countries are reputed for outstanding game viewing. Tanzania’s jaw-dropping Mount Kilimanjaro, sweeping coffee plantations and the exotic island of Zanzibar make it unique from its northern neighbor, while Kenya's lush green landscapes make it a bit less tropical, climate-wise. The two countries are frequently combined into a single journey, given their proximity to each other and the fact that they are both locations for the must-see Great Migration. Read more about whether Kenya or Tanzania is better for a safari .

When and what is the Great Migration?

The Great Migration is a wildlife spectacle, sometimes called The Greatest Show on Earth by safari enthusiasts, during which hundreds of wildebeest and other mammals head towards greener grazing pastures during East Africa's dry season. It is heavily dependent on the weather, specifically the rain which brings new vegetation upon which the wildebeest feed. Generally-speaking, herds are in the Serengeti from November to May. In May, as the grass dries up, herds begin the 500-mile migration north and by June they are in the greener plains of Kenya’s Maasai Mara. They usually stay here until October. From January on, they alternate between woodlands and plains, depending on the weather. In anticipation of the short rains—and the greener grasslands that come with it—the herds begin their trek down to the Serengeti. In November and December, they arrive to a flourishing green landscape where they stay until the cycle begins again.

Uganda Safari & Gorilla Trekking FAQs

The best time to go gorilla trekking in Uganda is during the dry season (December– February and June - August) when conditions are especially good for trekking to view mountain gorillas. Game drives in the national parks are also fruitful during this time.

Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Uganda safari. Dress in layers and bring a warm sweater for morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sunhat and gardening gloves are also a good idea; the jungle is dense and thick.

Natural World Kenya Safaris offers Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Uganda with basic accommodations starting at $96 per person, per day, plus the Uganda gorilla trekking permit which costs $700 per person per day (the permits are required, and those fees are non-negotiable.) Costs increase from there. Natural World Safaris can provide basic, mid-range, and luxury trekking safaris and is eager to work with almost any budget.

Suggested tips range from $10 to $20 per person per day for a private guide and the same amount for your driver if that is a different person than your guide.

If you are on a guided safari or gorilla trek in Uganda, your chances of encountering problems are minimal. However, it is always a good idea to take precautions on your safari, particularly when traveling through urban areas or in regions close to the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The trek to spot gorillas can be strenuous. It could take anywhere from two to eight hours to find and observe the gorillas, depending on the time of year. Be prepared to hike for multiple hours through uneven terrain at high altitude. It is advisable to train before any gorilla trekking trip by walking uphill, or better yet, by taking day hikes.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Uganda and the gorillas are free to roam. However, our expert guides and gorilla trackers have years of experience taking guests to see these magnificent creatures. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.

Most mountain gorillas in Uganda live at between 4,900 to 7,500 feet. Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, home to the country’s mountain gorillas, has a high point of 8,550ft.

Rwanda Safari & Gorilla Trekking FAQs

The best time to go on a gorilla trek in Rwanda is during the dry season (June - September) when conditions are best for trekking to view the country’s highlight: the fascinating mountain gorillas.

Wear neutral colored, lightweight clothing on your Rwanda gorilla trek. Dress in layers and don’t forget a sweater for chilly morning and nighttime game drives. For gorilla trekking, bring a waterproof rain jacket, broken-in hiking boots, long socks, hiking pants, bug repellant, and a daypack. A sun visor and protective gloves – such as gardening gloves - are also useful.

Natural World Kenya Safaris offers Gorilla Trekking Safaris in Rwanda with basic accommodations starting at $720 per person, per day, plus the Rwanda gorilla trekking permit which costs $1,500 per person per day (the permits are required, and those fees are non-negotiable.) Costs increase from there. Natural World Safaris can provide basic, mid-range, and luxury trekking safaris and is eager to work with almost any budget.

Suggested tips for your guide are $25 per person, per day for a private guide and the same amount for your driver if that is a different person than your guide.

Rwanda is one of the safest countries in Africa, particularly if you are on a guided safari or gorilla trek. Your chances of encountering problems are minimal. However, it is always a good idea to take precautions on your safari, particularly when traveling through urban areas. Cross-border travel into the Democratic Republic of the Congo or Burundi is not safe, however, so steer clear of this.

When it comes to wildlife viewing, there are never any guarantees. There are no fences in the parks in Rwanda and the gorillas are free to roam. However, our expert guides and gorilla trackers have years of experience taking guests to see these magnificent creatures. They know their favorite spots to congregate and work closely with park officials each day to provide the best possible chance of seeing gorillas in the wild.

Most mountain gorillas in Rwanda live at between 8,000 to 13,000 feet. Volcanoes National Park has a high point of 15,000ft.

Mara Serena Safari Lodge

Mara Serena Safari Lodge

About Mara Serena Safari Lodge

Located on Ol Donyo Oseiya hill, in the western ‘Mara Triangle’ sector of the Maasai Mara National Reserve, ...

... the 74-room Mara Serena Safari Lodge is one of the oldest and largest properties in the Mara ecosystem. Dating from 1973, this substantial hotel is part of the international Serena Hotels group whose largest shareholder is the Aga Khan Fund for Economic Development, and it has the full roster of hotel facilities. With its dramatic location, commanding a view of the Mara River that provides, as Serena describes it “A Ringside Seat For The Greatest Show On Earth", the Mara Serena is a very popular and well-known base for Mara safaris. This is especially the case during the migration, when it can feel very busy and somewhat impersonal here. As expected, we found the driver-guides’ knowledge of the Triangle very proficient, the very small rooms comfortable and the meals reasonably good for a large, price-conscious lodge.

When to go to Maasai Mara National Reserve

Our month by month guide: What it's like to visit Mara Serena Safari Lodge in Maasai Mara National Reserve

Kenya in January

Clear, hot days and warm nights make this high season a popular time for safaris and it’s also good for diving and snorkelling as water clarity is excellent and gets better as the dry season progresses. Most lodges and tented camps treat January after the New Year week is over, as mid-season, making it a good compromise in terms of value for money with reasonably reliable, dry weather and some greenery left in the landscape. Expert Africa bases its description of climate and weather in January, like the other months of the year, on the climate records of roughly the last 100 years, and it's fair to say that the weather and seasons since the beginning of this century have been highly irregular and unpredictable.

  • On average, January is the second driest month of the year
  • Elephants dig waterholes in the dry riverbed in the Samburu reserve.
  • Wildebeest and many antelope have their calving season, to February.
  • Migrant birds are seen in huge numbers, especially in the Rift Valley.
  • Sea water clarity around the coral reefs generally good.

Fantastic: the very best time to visit

Weather in January

Kenya in February

With the short dry season well established, the grass grazed down and wildlife gathering close to water points, this is still a good time for a safari. Good water clarity in the Indian Ocean's coastal waters makes for excellent diving and snorkelling conditions. Expert Africa bases its description of climate and weather in February, like the other months of the year, on the climate records of roughly the last 100 years, and it's fair to say that the weather and seasons since the beginning of this century have been highly irregular and unpredictable.

  • On average, February is the driest month of the year.
  • It’s sometimes possible to swim with whale sharks at Diani Beach.
  • Migrant birds are still seen everywhere, especially near water.
  • This is usually peak calving season for wildebeest and many antelopes.
  • This month is often the hottest of the year, especially on the coast.

A very good time to visit

Weather in February

Kenya in March

Hot, increasingly humid weather – with good diving and snorkelling conditions at the start of the month – gives way to rains and lower accommodation costs. Expert Africa bases its description of climate and weather in March, like the other months of the year, on the climate records of roughly the last 100 years, and predicting the seasons since the beginning of this century has been difficult. March is the month when – traditionally – intensely hot conditions build up until a cloudburst finally happens at the end of the month or in early April, to relieve the humidity. As ever, regional variations across the country can greatly impact on visitors' experiences.

  • Sea-water clarity is best for diving before the long rains start.
  • Visitor numbers are low, though the Easter holidays can be busier.
  • Night skies can be scintillatingly clear in early March.
  • Cropped down savannah grasses can make it easier to see the wildlife.
  • Temperartures climb high, especially at lower elevations.

A good time to visit, with pros & cons

Weather in March

Kenya in April

April sees the full onset of the southeast monsoon wind or kusi, which heralds the long rains. Temperatures drop soon after the rains are established and you’ll often have facilities largely to yourself in this more affordable low season, sometimes known as the "green season". The bush quickly springs to life, with greenery sprouting almost before your eyes. While you're likely to get a fair number of heavy showers, the breaks in the rain can yield sparklingly clear conditions. With the dust settled and bright sun piercing the clouds, conditions can be sublime for photography, especially first thing in the morning or in the late afternoon with another storm brewing. You may be lucky, or you may find conditions very wet and muddy.

  • A wet month, the coast often gets more than 300mm (12in) of rain.
  • Sunny spells can provide great light for photography.
  • Buffalo and zebra calving season often happens in this month.
  • Baby crocodiles hatch, for example on Central Island in Lake Turkana.
  • Palearctic migrant birds gather to fly north to breeding grounds.

A time to avoid if possible

Weather in April

Kenya in May

While game viewing can be trickier as vegetation runs riot, between the cloudbursts the colours and light are great for photography at this time of year. Expert Africa bases its description of climate and weather in May, like the other months of the year, on the climate records of roughly the last 100 years, and while it's reasonable to expect heavy rains in many parts during this month, especially on the coast, the rains don't always come evenly or in some areas come at all. In an El Niño year, the so-called long rains that normally are established across much of the country by May can be meagre, to the despair of farmers. On the other hand in a La Niña year, the long rains can bring floods. On the coast, the monsoon winds make the climate much more predictable, with heavy rains common throughout this month.

  • Frogs breed in the ponds in the Arabuko Sokoke Forest near Watamu.
  • Wildebeest, impala and other grazers are in rut (the breeding season).
  • Kilimanjaro looks its best as heavy rain falls as snow on the summit.
  • There's a sharp peek of rainfall on the coast with many rainy days.
  • Accommodation prices are uniformly low, while some camps close.

Weather in May

Kenya in June

The rains give way to cloudy, cooler weather, often making for comfortable conditions by the end of the month, especially in the highlands. Starting from mid-June or the beginning of July and running until the end of October, this is the high season, and accordingly has higher accommodation rates and – at least until early September – higher numbers of visitors. While the early part of June can often be rainy on the coast, it can be a great time to go on safari, with fresh greenery, many young animals and good photographic conditions with clear air.

  • The Taru Desert, inland from the coast, is carpeted with flowers.
  • The Lake Turkana Cultural Festival is held in Loiyangalani.
  • Madaraka Day (commemorating self rule) is 1 June.
  • The annual Lewa marathon runs a course through the wildlife.
  • The Diani Rules "sports" event rips up the rulebook at Diani Beach.

Weather in June

Kenya in July

Kenya’s “winter" season sets in (winter is a misnomer but locals feel the change), and the highlands can be rather grey. Skies are often cloudy and the days can be surprisingly cool, with an average daytime high in many highland safari areas of 15-20°C and night-time temperatures dropping below 10°C in Nairobi and the highlands. Lower parts of the country and the coast are usually warm and dry, typically reaching highs of around 25°C with lows in the high teens. As this is the start of the high season, coinciding with the usual arrival of the wildebeest migration in the Maasai Mara, July is a busy month. Ask your Expert Africa specialist to advise on how to avoid the crowds, which is not that difficult to do.

  • The wildebeest migration usually reaches the Maasai Mara in July.
  • Simbi Lake (Kisumu) and Crater Lake (Naivasha) can attract flamingoes.
  • Watersports start to pick up and some surfing is possible at Malindi.
  • Afternoon thunderstorms are a common feature in the Maasai Mara.
  • The sea can be choppy along the coast, making diving difficult.

Weather in July

Kenya in August

The Great Migration fills the plains of the Maasai Mara, and school’s out, so the park roads are full of tourists – ask your Expert Africa specialist for advice on crowd avoidance tactics. Choose a private conservancy rather than a public national park or national reserve for quieter conditions. Like July, August is generally mild and relatively dry in the safari areas, but it can be very chilly in the highlands, even in the middle of the day, and hail occasionally falls above altitudes of around 2,400m (8,000ft). Nairobi can be disappointingly overcast, with low cloud.

  • Apart from Christmas holidays, this is the busiest month of the year.
  • Late August sees peak wildebeest drama at the Mara River crossings.
  • Coastal winds are good for kite- and wind-surfing.
  • Few mosquitoes are around at this generally dry time of year.
  • The annual Camel Derby takes place in the Samburu capital, Maralal.

Weather in August

Kenya in September

The skies clearing of cloud signals the start of hot, dry weather with little chance of rain – and, after the first few days of the month, far fewer visitors – making the latter part of September a good time for a quieter safari. While early September is often good for dramatic migration crossings along the Mara River, you might consider deliberately postponing your trip until later in the month, when the migration can still be very impressive and visitor numbers fewer. If tourist surges are somewhat predictable, however, the patterns of the wildebeest migration are more volatile, and like all of Expert Africa's climate and weather assessments, they are based on accumulated years of experience rather than guaranteed certainty.

  • This is still high season, with prices to match.
  • Many river crossings take place on the Mara river in both directions.
  • Natural bush fires flush out insects and small animals for predators.
  • The Rift Valley Music Festival takes place by Lake Naivasha.
  • With school holidays over by early September, late-month is quieter.

Weather in September

Kenya in October

Still hot, mostly dry and not too busy, this is many people’s preferred month for a safari, and it’s also good for diving and snorkelling. The wildebeest and zebra herds of the great migration are often still to be seen, though in dwindling numbers. The swamps of Amboseli attract thirsty wildlife including large herds of elephants. While we wouldn't expect much rain across most of the country this month, the climate has become so unpredictable that you can never say never, and the possibiity of the short rains – usually associated with November to mid-December, starting early, can't be discounted.

  • This month sees the tail end of the great migration in the Mara.
  • Palearctic migrant birds start to arrive, staying until March.
  • Turtle nests hatch at Watamu, until November.
  • Amboseli elephants focus on the swamps for their daily water.
  • The Indian Ocean monsoon winds turn from southeast to northeast.

Weather in October

Kenya in November

The northeast monsoon wind or kaskazi heralds the start of the “short rains", usually some time in the second half of the month. From November to mid-December, this is the low season, and accordingly has lower accommodation rates and lower visitor numbers. Across most of the country you can expect warm, somewhat cloudy weather, with occasional heavy showers and localised flooding. Expert Africa bases its description of the climate in November, like the other months of the year, on the records of roughly the last 100 years, and it's fair to say that the seasons since the beginning of this century have been highly irregular and unpredictable: some years the short rains don't come at all, or don't reach every part of the country. In an El Niño year, the November short rains can be very heavy, but in a La Niña year, they can fail completely.

  • Swimming with dolphins in Lamu can be done from now until April.
  • Birders gather at Ngulia in Tsavo West to ring Palearctic migrants.
  • The Lamu Cultural Festival takes over the town and Lamu Creek.
  • Agricultural shows often take place regional market towns.
  • This is low season, so camps can be great value, with special offers.

Weather in November

Kenya in December

In a typical December, the rains usually finish by middle of the month, leaving the landscape looking its best, under clear blue skies, and heralding the start of the second peak tourist season from around 20 December to the first week of January. Our assessment of the likely weather in December, like the other months of the year, is based on climate records, and it's fair to say that the seasons since the beginning of this century have been highly irregular and unpredictable. Christmas can sometimes be wet, but most years the rains have finished a week or two earlier, with the festive season ushering in the perfect combination of clear skies and sunshine by day and starry nights.

  • Christmas and New Year are busy, with the lodges and camps full.
  • Rates are highest after 24 Dec, with supplements on public holidays.
  • Republic Day and Independence day are celebrated on 12 December.
  • Good kite- and wind-surfing restarts, with strong northeasterly winds.
  • Mango season begins, providing excitement for primates and elephants.

Experience The Masai Mara National Reserve From The Renowned Serena Safari Lodge With Endless Vistas

The Mara Serena Safari Lodge lies deep within the Masai Mara National Reserve of Kenya.

The Mara Serena is the ultimate safari destination; it stands centre-stage to one of Africa's most dramatic wildlife arenas and has a ringside seat for the most incredible wildlife show on Earth, the legendary migration of the wildebeest.

Drawing its inspiration from the traditional Maasai cultural motif of a cluster of domed, mud-coloured huts encircled by a 'Boma' of brushwood, the Masai Mara Budget Lodge offers a rare blend of raw African splendour and sumptuous sophistication.

The essentially ethnic décor also draws on a vibrant colour palette of sun-burst colours, embellished by a unique selection of Maasai art to create the look and feel of a traditional bush encampment.

Mara Serena Safari Lodge features individual rooms, each with its own balcony and view of eternity, a sky-blue swimming pool and a spectacular restaurant overlooking a water hole where a fantasia of creatures collect to drink.

Rooms and Suites

Mara Serena Safari Lodge offers an array of rooms and suites to accommodate its guests, 74 in total. All rooms and suites have been designed to blend seamlessly into the landscape while offering magnificent Mara vistas.

The standard rooms offer all the necessary amenities for a comfortable stay. These include a semi-private veranda, air conditioning, a mosquito net, and a private bathroom with a walk-in shower.

For those looking for extra luxury and space, the Mara suite offers guests that little bit more in terms of luxuries and amenities, as well as space and a more private verandah.

The interiors at the Mara Serena are individually styled in exuberant bush colours, and they feature spacious bathrooms and the calm sophistication of a world-class safari hotel.

Cuisine and Wine

The traditional safari-styled dining room overlooks Mara Serena Safari Lodge's action-packed water hole and features a vibrant bar area, a relaxed candlelit atmosphere and menu choices that include a broad selection of imaginative and traditional safari favourites.

Mara Serena Safari Lodge boasts an excellent wine and beer selection that will perfectly complement your meal. The wine list features a variety of delicious reds, whites, and bubbly, while the beer menu includes both local and international favourites.

No matter what you're in the mood for, you're sure to find something to tantalize your taste buds at Mara Serena Safari Lodge.

Mara Serena Safari Lodge offers guests a range of facilities to make their stay comfortable and enjoyable. There are numerous lounge areas where guests can relax, as well as a small library with a wide selection of books.

Dining is also a pleasure at the lodge, with numerous indoor and outdoor dining areas to choose from. Guests can enjoy refreshing cocktails or an ice-cold beer at the lodge's bar or take a dip in the swimming pool.

Mara Serena Safari Lodge has a swimming pool with sun loungers and pool umbrellas, making it the perfect place to relax and enjoy the stunning views.

There is also a beauty therapy and massage service available, as well as a full medical backup in case of an emergency.

The word "Safari" means "journey" in Kiswahili, but since the days of the "Great White Hunters," a "Safari" has evolved to mean a spectacular bush adventure that takes in sightings of a glorious selection of wildlife, flora, fauna and bird life whilst delivering awe-inspiring scenery, show-stopping views and wildlife encounters of the most exciting kind, including huge wildebeest herds and the great migration crossing the Mara River.

Safari activities on offer at the Mara Serena will most certainly not disappoint, no matter the time of year.

One of the most magically memorable of the Masai Mara National Reserve experiences, a balloon safari allows you to drift in silence above the splendour of the plains, dip down to visit the hippo pools of the Mara River, enjoy a bird's eye view of the wildlife theatre below and descend to a scenic champagne breakfast cooked and served in the middle of the bush.

In Conclusion

Mara Serena Safari Lodge is a magnificent safari lodge that offers guests a unique blend of international sophistication and raw African beauty.

The wide-spaced safari rooms have been sensitively designed so as to blend seamlessly into the landscape whilst offering magnificent Mara vistas from their semi-private verandas.

As for the interiors, individually styled in exuberant bush colours, they feature spacious bathrooms and the calm sophistication of a world-class safari hotel.
