Burano Italy, a Venice's Island

Welcome to isoladiburano.it the Official Website of Burano in Italy , the colorful island of lace . Home of big artists like Baldassare Galuppi , Remigio Barbaro and Pino Donaggio , as well as inspirer of the Arte Buranella .

Many international magazines include Burano among the top 10 most colorful cities in the world , although it would be more appropriate to bring it within the first 10 most colorful places in the world or between the 10 most colorful locations in the world .

If you're planning to travel to Burano, read our guide on how to visit the island of Burano . Otherwise, keep reading.

Burano colors reflected on the water

The Colours of Burano

All visitors of Burano remain intrigued by the many colours and the colorful houses that are reflected into the green waters of channels, by the leaning bell tower , by the tranquility and the calmness with which the elderly ladies embroider original Burano lace by their tombolo (or lace pillow), while they are laughing and chatting in squares among them. It seems to be in paradise. Children who dart freely with their bicycles, balconies with multicolored flowers, fishermen who put up fresh fish from their traditional boats.

Burano's leaning tower

Just gone ashore from actv ferry ( purchasing Burano's water bus tickets ), you will be in a green lawn where a Remigio Barbaro 's solemn sculpture is placed.

Pursuing the shores you will arrive to center of the Island: Galuppi Square ; here neighbourly ladies invite the most curious visitors to come into their shops to admire the lace working .

Although in lacemaking in Burano is the main craftsmanship attraction, enchanting is also the " lume glass working ": a technique born in the nearby island of Murano , but also widespread in the other islands of the Venetian Lagoon . Burano is not an exception to this and it is quite easy to come across some little shops where you can admire this type of Murano glass processing . Real glass factories in miniature, such as the shop located in Fondamenta Giudecca 132, inside a typical and small green house.

If you search for a place to eat like a local , Burano is very famous for its fish dishes , the most famous of which is the " risotto de gò ": the broth in which the rice is cooked and creamed is extracted from the "gò" a fish typical of the Venice lagoon, known in English under the name of " goby ". The dishes of the Burano's cuisine are served in restaurants , who despite being known from the point of view of the quality of the service, in the kitchen maintain the genuineness of a typical old " trattoria buranella " (a Burano's tavern) and where you can still eat delicious fresh fish.

If your time is short, there are anyway several pizzerias or you can opt for a delicious icecream in a bar or a typical Burano's cookie (the most famous are the " Bussolà " and the " Esse ") in a pastry store , enjoying it until the end of Piazza Galuppi where San Martino Bishop's Church is located: inside, in addition to a lot of important works, there is a famous opera of Gian Battista Tiepolo . Sideways is located the Santa Barbara's Chapel.

Always in the same square there is the " Museo del Merletto " (Lace Museum), the Town Hall , a well made of Istria's stone and the Baldassare Galuppi's sculpture made by Remigio Barbaro , the well-known sculptor from Burano.

Sideways the church, some stands offer local souvernirs for a cheap price. Moreover every Wednesday morning not far from the church the street market takes place and two minutes far from the center you can take a look at the fish market, where to see the typical venetian lagoon sea-food.

Among Burano's tiny streets there are a lot of "capitelli" (capitals) placed in the calli entrances and, searching for them, surely you will bump into the most famous and coloured house in the island: " la Casa di Bepi Suà " (the house of Joseph Sweaty), painted with the use of many colors, divided into geometric shapes.

Burano Bepi's House

The typical Burano's houses are mainly squared-shaped and are divided into two or three floors. At the low ground there is the kitchen, the breakfast nook and the toilet. At the next floors there are the bedrooms.

The different colours of the houses, which today rappresent the our island main feature, at a previous time was useful to delimit the properties. Notwithstanding an ancient legend narrates that fishermen painted their houses to see them from long distance when they were far away for fishing.

Where is Burano in Italy?

Burano is an island in the Northern Venetian Lagoon , 11 Km northeastern far from Murano and Venice , to which it is connected by the Canale Bisatto - Canale Carbonera - Scomenzera San Giacomo's trail: this route from Venice to Burano takes 45 minutes by boat. isoladiburano.it has created an useful guide with a map depicting the major attractions in Burano . So if you're planning to visit Burano, but you're not sure where to start, do not miss our guide entitled " Things to do in Burano ."

History of Burano

The inhabitants of Altino , escaping from barbarian invasion, find refuge in the islands of lagoon, giving them the names of the six doors of their thrown over city: Murano , Mazzorbo , Burano , Torcello , Ammiana e Costanziaca.

The name "Burano" arise from "Porta Boreana" , the northern door of the city.

In these islands the first houses were build on palafittes, with walls made of woven canes and afterwards plastered with mud. They were very light buildings constituted by an unique room, because the ground was too tender. Beds were made of dry leaves.

Later these raw houses were changed with buildings made of bricks and the older ones were used like warehouses.

Some scholar believe that Burano was not risen where it is situated today. In some ancient text is written that the island was situated nearest the sea and that its inhabitants must escape from it because of the strong tidal wave.

Instead in other texts is written which the position of Burano was never changed and which it has saved the island from malaria.

Since the time of Venetian Republic , Burano had only 8000 poor inhabitants (now 3000) predominantly fishermans and farmers. Thanks to the craft of lace workers, the island grew economically, exporting its fantastic laces all over the world.

Today Burano is lotted into five joined by bridge quarters: "San Martino Destro" , "San Martino Sinistro" , "San Mauro" , "Giucecca" and "Terranova" , traversed by their mill runs "Rio Ponticello", "Rio Zuecca" and "Rio Terranova".

The last big change was the principal mill run's closing off to build the square, which takes its name from the famous musician Baldassare Galuppi .

Tour description

Spend one perfect day exploring venice’s charming islands and enjoying vip treatment..

This Murano & Burano tour takes you away from the crowds of central Venice to the city's outlying islands, bursting with authentic history and culture. Explore Burano and Murano by private boat, complete with an exclusive wine tasting at a Michelin Star restaurant and a private glassblowing demonstration.

Say buongiorno to your guide and small group in central Venice, then enjoy a short walk through a picturesque neighborhood to your boat to begin your Murano & Burano tour. You’ll make a brief stop along the way for a photo op at one of Venice’s most recognizable spots.

Once aboard the private boat, you’ll slip away from the city center and catch breathtaking views from the water. Pass by legendary sights such as St. Mark’s Square, the Doge's Palace, and the Bridge of Sighs. Throughout the pleasant hour-long ride, your guide will also point out some lesser-known gems that you’ll want to explore during the rest of your time in the city.

Explore picture-perfect Burano with a knowledgeable guide.

You’ll disembark at Burano and pop over to a secret vineyard—now part of a Michelin Star restaurant. Relax and enjoy the views of the vineyards from the restaurant’s stunning tasting room as you sip a glass of excellent white wine served with homemade snacks in an exclusive tasting that’s not available with any other operator.

After your VIP wine tasting, you'll discover the center of Burano Island, home to the famous colorful houses which have been the homes of Venice’s legendary lacemakers since the 16th century. Enjoy a stroll around the island with your guide, taking in the charming streets and sights like the old fish market (no longer in use) and the main church. After the guided portion of your visit, you’ll have the option to accompany your guide to a traditional lacemaking workshop or enjoy some free time on your own.

See Murano’s glassmaking tradition come to life.

Your next stop is the island of Murano, known for its respected tradition of glassmaking since the 13th century. After a 40-minute boat ride, you'll disembark on Murano and head into a formerly abandoned medieval church. Visited by Casanova and Venetian nobles in its heyday, this fascinating space is now a glassmaking workshop. Marvel at a private glassblowing demonstration and learn about the storied history of this local tradition.

After your Murano tour, you'll have some free time to explore the island. Finally, hop back aboard your private boat and we’ll have you back in central Venice by late afternoon. Alternatively, you can choose to stay in Murano for a bit longer on your own, with instructions from your guide on how to make your way back to Venice via public transport.

You’ll return to Venice with a new perspective on the Floating City and some of its lesser-visited (yet no less charming) islands. Thanks to the stories from your guide that bring the islands and their traditions to life, your Murano & Burano tour will provide you with a greater appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of the lagoon.

Please note that this description is an example and your experience may vary depending on the season, day of the week, and group size. Regardless of where your tour goes, you always have an excellent experience.

This was a GREAT tour - we had a private boat to take us first to Vanessa winery on Burano and then explored Burano. Manuela brought us to see a lace demonstration as well. We then got back on the boat and went to Murano to see a glass blowing demonstration. Manuela was so friendly and knowledgeable. The group size was also perfect. Can't wait to book another tour with these companies!

burano veneto

Are you thinking of doing a Murano and Burano tour from Venice?

There are many Murano and Burano tours and half-day excursions you can join to be able to explore these splendid Venetian islands. Boats normally depart from various locations such as Piazzale Roma and Riva degli Schiavoni, near San Marco.

Discovering Murano and its glassworks, Burano and its colours in less than 5 hours is possible! But why even join a Murano and Burano boat tour? Because half day tours to the islands are perfect for those who don’t have much time available.

For most visitors to Venice, these tours are highly convenient because boats leave from popular locations near St. Mark’s Square or Piazzale Roma and by booking online in advance you don’t have to queue at the tourist offices in Venice.

What's in this guide?

I want to start off by saying that in my opinion, a visit to Venice can’t be considered as fully complete without visiting the islands of Murano and Burano .

There are many things to do in Venice , but to start off this guide, and before we look at the these island tours, let’s look at where both Murano and Burano are located. Also, some of the reasons why you would choose to visit them in the first place.

Where are Murano and Burano?

Murano and Burano are islands that belong to the Venetian lagoon , and located between Venice (to the north) and the mainland , in northern Italy.

Murano is based on many small islands divided by canals, like Venice. It’s famous for its glass making factories which attract visitors from all over the world.

Burano is further away from Venice and it’s a fishermen’s village known for its rainbow coloured houses and its lace work , which is a tradition that locals have kept alive and handed down through many generations.

It’s worth noting that Burano is connected to the Mazzorbo island by a bridge. This is one of the least visited islands of the Venetian lagoon but still worth visiting.

💡 Local Tip: I recommend visiting Mazzorbo to eat at the restaurant Venissa , the green Michelin starred restaurant whose mission is to enhance and celebrate the flavours of native Venice.

Are Murano and Burano worth visiting?

Yes, Murano and Burano are both worth visiting. See below a few reasons why.

  • Murano is worth visiting to closely watch glassmaking masters . Since the 13th century, Murano has been the hub of the Venetian glass industry , whose techniques have been handed down from generation to generation. The tours include a demonstration by master glassmakers of Murano glass making and the creation of beautiful objects .
  • Burano is one of the most picturesque villages in the lagoon and Veneto region with its lively and colourful houses . According to the legend, local fishermen wanted their houses coloured to recognize them on the way back from the sea on days of thick fog.
  • Another reason to visit Burano is to watch handcrafted lace created by local lacemakers on the streets. It’s quite rare to find Burano lace due to the industriousness of the technique, called the bobbin lace. This ancient technique allows the creation of lace of sublime grace and with truly complex designs.

How far are Murano and Burano from Venice?

Murano and Burano are both north of Venice and Murano is 1.5 kilometres from Venice, while Burano is 7 kilometres away. The only way to reach them is by vaporetto (water bus).

vaporetto sign venice

The main lines depart from the Fondamenta Nove water bus stop, which is 10 minutes away from the Rialto Bridge, and 16 from St. Mark’s Square on foot.

The best way to move between the islands is to get a daily water bus ticket online.

  • To Murano: get the water bus lines 3 from the railway station, 4.1, 4.2 from both the train station and Fondamenta Nove, 12, 13 and N from Fondamenta Nove only. There’s also the seasonal line number 7 from San Marco Zaccaria to Murano main stops. It’s advised to get off at the Murano Navagero terminal to visit the island and to do that use the line Fondamenta Nuove-Murano Navagero 4.1 that takes 17 minutes . You can see this guide on how to get from Venice to Murano for more detailed advice.
  • To Burano: get the water bus lines 12 and N . The best terminal to get off is the Burano C vaporetto terminal. The best line to get is 12, Fondamenta Nuove-Burano C and it takes 45 minutes . You can get from Murano to Burano with the line 12 Murano Faro-Burano C in 30 minutes.

Best time to visit Murano and Burano

The best time to go on a Murano and Burano tour is from late spring to early autumn . Visiting these islands on the shoulder seasons is advised, if you want to avoid long queues at the vaporetto stops and to visit the main attractions.

burano from venice

I’ve spoken about visiting Venice in May before, but in this case I would recommend avoiding the weekends , when many people go on excursions and day trips to these islands. Spring and autumn are therefore ideal to avoid large crowds, and enjoy pleasant temperatures (can go over 20 °C on a warm sunny day).

Of course, there’s a higher chance of rain compared to the summer, but keep an eye on the forecast and plan your stay in Venice around that, when possible.

The best time of the day to visit them is early in the morning and normally, half a day is enough to cover the main sights of Murano and Burano. If you’ve decided to travel there by water bus then you can spend as much time as you want.

Will you be visiting these Venetian islands from May to September? Remember to carry with you a pair of sunglasses and a good sunscreen to protect your skin.

How to Visit Burano from Venice: Things to Do + Travel Tips!

Visiting bright and colorful Burano from Venice is one of the most popular day trips from the City of Canals–and it is well worth the boat ride!

Heading from Venice to Burano will help you see a whole different side of life on the Venetian Lagoon, far from the hustle and bustle of hotspots like the Rialto Bride and St. Mark’s Square .

This is a place where life moves a little slower, the homes are a bit more colorful, and where the canals are filled with fishing boats instead of gondolas.

It’s also just, to be quite frank, too pretty to avoid–there are few towns on Earth as colorful as Burano .

Burano is one of several outlying islands in the Venetian Lagoon, and visiting Burano from Venice is a fairly simple endeavor .

Essentially, you can choose between two options to get there: take public transportation or book an organized day trip .

Here are the pros and cons of each, plus how to book!

Photo of a colorful street in Burano with a man standing to the left, as seen on a trip to Burano from Venice.

Option 1: Take a Vaporetto .

In Venice, vaporettos are large, public boats that act as public transportation, essentially serving the same function that buses, trams, or metros do in more land-based cities.

Vaporetto #12 will deliver you right to Burano–and to the glass-blowing island of Murano as well if you’re so inclined.

We’ve seen estimates online ranging from 30-40 minutes to reach Burano from Venice.

kate storm standing along a row of colorful houses in burano venice with canal to the right

Personally, it took us 45 minutes to reach the colorful island.

As of 2023, one-way vaporetto tickets to reach Burano cost 9.5 Euros each way–it’s not the cheapest public transportation in the world!

With a trip to Burano via vaporetto running 19 Euros round-trip per person, not including a stop at any other islands, you’ll likely want to purchase a transportation pass to get there (and also plan any other nearby trips you want to take, like to Murano, Torcello, or Giudecca, for the timeframe that the pass is active).

Shop Venice transportation tickets and passes now!

Option 2: Book a day trip to Burano.

Want to add a little more context to your visit, hit 2 or 3 islands in one day without stress, or avoid spending any energy navigating Venice’s public transportation system?

If that sounds like you, booking a tour that heads to Burano is an excellent option!

Tours to Murano, Burano, and Torcello are incredibly affordable–especially by Venetian standards–and offer a low-stress way to get a taste of the islands.

This incredibly popular tour will take you to all 3 islands and allow you to briefly explore each, plus allows you to visit a glass factory on Murano.

And, since this day trip only costs slightly more than a round-trip vaporetto ticket to Burano, it’s arguably one of the best deals in the city!

Much like the nearby island of Murano is world-famous for its glass, Burano has been well-known for its lace production for centuries.

One of its best-known customers was Leonardo da Vinci himself, who bought a piece for the altar of the Duomo of Milan !

While most of the lace you’ll see for sale in Burano these days is made by machine or a hybrid of machine work and handmade touches (the traditional handmade pieces take months to create and cost thousands of dollars), it is still stunning!

If you’re looking for the best souvenirs from Venice , there’s no doubt that Burano lace ranks among them.

There’s a small lace museum on the island (you can find it on Piazza Galuppi), so if the craft interests you, consider adding a stop there to your trip to Burano from Venice .

Eat some delicious seafood.

It should come as no surprise that a fishing village serves up some tasty seafood dishes, right?

If your trip from Venice to Burano happens to coincide with a mealtime, consider sitting down for a plate of risotto de gò , aka fish broth risotto–a local specialty.

Stroll across the Tre Ponti.

The Tre Ponti (or “three bridges”, though it is technically all one bridge) offer some of the best panoramic views of Burano’s delightful streets and quaint canals.

B e sure not to miss this popular spot during your day trip to Burano from Venice!

Visit Pescaria Vecia (the old fish market).

Every fisherman’s village needs a fish market–and Pescaria Vecia is Burano’s adorable version.

If you happen to be visiting Burano around sunset, this is the place to be for beautiful views!

Check out the leaning tower of Burano.

The leaning tower of Pisa is far from the only leaning tower in Italy, even if it is the most famous–and for another example, you don’t need to look any further than Burano.

For a unique photo op on the island, head to Via Giudecca and check out the sharp lean of the bell tower of St. Martin’s Church.

Snack on Burano’s traditional cookies.

As a big fan of butter cookies (and cookies in general),  bussolai  (or  bussolà  in the singular) cookies from Burano are one of my favorite snacks on the island!

Crisp and delicious, the cookies were traditionally made as durable snacks for fishermen to take out on their boats with them, but they remain popular to this day (particularly for Easter).

Bussolai  cookies go by several names, including  buranelli  and  essi  (for the “S” shape that they’re sometimes made into.

Whatever you call them, though, they are tasty, affordable, easy to transport, and worth trying when visiting Burano from Venice.

As much as we love heading from Venice to Burano for a day, you really don’t need a lot of time here!

The village is incredibly small–for context, it is home to under 3,000 people as compared to Venice’s nearly 60,000–and doesn’t require any intense sightseeing in order to to fully appreciate it.

Simply walking around, checking out the best-known views, admiring the lace, and taking 10,000 photos is enough to truly enjoy your time visiting Burano from Venice.

For that reason, we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend booking a tour that covers Murano + Burano or even Murano, Burano, and Torcello in one day .

As lovely as Burano is, Venice itself has so many incredible views and hidden gems to explore that it’s hard to justify any additional time taken away from the city.

In May 2016, I left my suburban life in the USA and became a full-time traveler. Since then, I have visited 50+ countries on 5 continents and lived in Portugal, developing a special love of traveling in Europe (especially Italy) along the way. Today, along with my husband Jeremy and dog Ranger, I’m working toward my eventual goal of splitting my life between Europe and the USA.

Hi, Is the transportation pass valid for only 75 minutes/3 days travel as per the link? If so, if the journey to Burano takes 45 minutes wouldn’t you need to buy two passes for an out and back journey?

Hi Christopher!

I think you saw my FB message, but just in case someone else has the same question: correct, the 75 minute *ticket* would need to be purchased twice, there and back. The 1/2/3 day pass is available for the whole time period you buy it for.

Essentially, with the pass, you can travel as much as you like within the given time frame, while if you buy individual tickets instead, you’ll need to buy two of them to travel round-trip to Burano from Venice.

Can we get to Burano from Venice on November 22nd, 019? Great information! Thanks, Harriet

Hi Harriet! It shouldn’t be a problem–the vaporetto lines are public transport and run year-round, and the tours I linked run year-round as well.

Have fun in Burano!

Hi Kate! Both my husband and I will be going on a cruise end of September via Venice. As we will be in Venice a day earlier prior to our cruise, we thought we might visit Burano. We are staying at Mestre not Venice, so how do I get to Burano from our hotel in Mestre? Thanks in advance

I’m not too familiar with Mestre and haven’t spent much time there, but my understanding is that you can take the vaporetto to Burano from there as well, it’ll just be on a different route/line. I’d ask your hotel staff to confirm, though!

hi, great info! if we would like to visit only burano and skip on murano, what would you recommend in terms of the time spent there and the time of the day? should we spent the late after noon and eat dinner there, and be there around sun set? or better during the morning hours? we are heading to venice tomorrow for 3 nights, with 2 kids, 12 and 16 years old… cheers!

Hi Daphna! I’d say either is a great idea depending on weather (it’ll obviously be much warmer in the afternoon). I’d say you’ll have fewer crowds in the morning, but if you don’t mind the afternoon crowds, I’d opt for sunset dinner myself.

Venice cruise port: How to spend your day in Italy’s most romantic city

Aerial view over St Mark's square and city of Venice at sunset

Setting sail from Italy's Stazione Marittima (Venezia Terminal Passeggeri) near sunset is one of the most magical cruising experiences in the world. And if you're aboard a smaller cruise ship, gliding down the Grand Canal as the sinking sun colors iconic landmarks like St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace in golden hues is likely a memory you will never forget.

Renowned for its romantic canals, historic architecture and rich cultural heritage, Venice is an enchanting port call on many European and Mediterranean itineraries. The port's location offers easy access to major transportation hubs, including Venice Marco Polo Airport (VCE) and Treviso Airport (TSF), making it convenient. Numerous hotels in the vicinity provide excellent options for pre- or post-cruise stays.

As a gateway to the Mediterranean and Adriatic seas, the historic Venice port has seen a significant increase in activity in recent years, with more than 1.5 million passengers passing through annually. It currently accommodates more than 30 cruise lines, including Royal Caribbean , Celebrity Cruises , MSC Cruises , Oceania Cruises and Silversea Cruises .

However, this increase in tourism over the years has created concerns about the impact of cruise ships on the city's delicate architecture and environment. As such, Italian officials have begun redirecting larger ships to other ports, with these changes set to take full effect in the coming years. These ports include Chioggia, roughly 30 miles south of Venice; Ravenna, about 90 miles south of Venice; and Trieste, about 100 miles northeast of Venice. If you are starting or ending your cruise in Venice, you will want to double-check what port you are departing from.

3 things TPG loves about Venice

  • The enchanting canals and historic architecture
  • World-renowned landmarks
  • Distinctive shopping and dining experiences, like grabbing cicchetti (Venetian tapas) and wine at a bacaro (local wine bar)

What we could do without

  • Crowded tourist spots, especially when cruise ships are in port
  • High prices
  • Impact of mass tourism (increased water pollution and foot traffic damage to Venice's historic buildings)

Venice cruise port overview

Larger cruise lines that home port in Venice now dock at nearby Marghera or other regional ports like Ravenna or Trieste. From there, passengers take a shuttle service to Stazione Marittima. The port has modern facilities, including terminals, shuttle services, and amenities such as cafes and shops. Upon arrival, passengers can easily access Venice's main attractions by foot, water taxi or the city's famous Vaporetto (water bus) system.

St. Mark's Basilica

This stunning basilica is an absolute must-see in Venice. Known for its intricate Italo-Byzantine architecture, St. Mark's Basilica is adorned with more than 85,000 square feet of beautiful 13th-century mosaics. The basilica also has more than 500 Byzantine columns, some from the 6th century. Visitors can explore the church's interior, climb up to the terrace for spectacular views of St. Mark's Square and visit the museum to see the famous "Horses of Saint Mark" bronze sculptures.

Doge's Palace

Adjacent to St. Mark's Basilica, the Doge's Palace is a Gothic masterpiece that served as the Doge of Venice's residence and the seat of the Venetian government. Its opulent rooms are filled with Renaissance art and splendid decorations. The palace's prison cells and the infamous Bridge of Sighs, connecting the palace to the prison, offer a glimpse into the darker side of Venetian history.

Rialto Bridge

One of the most famous bridges in Venice, the Rialto Bridge spans the Grand Canal and offers picturesque views of the bustling waterway below. Completed in 1591, it is the oldest of the four bridges spanning the Grand Canal.

The Rialto Bridge is a marvel of Renaissance engineering and was constructed as a single-span stone bridge. That was a daring design choice in the late 16th century when many believed it would collapse under its own weight. It did not, and its elegant arches have stood the test of time. Stroll across it to feel the city's vibrant energy, capture some unforgettable pictures, and check out the rows of shops selling everything from jewelry to souvenirs.

Gondola rides

No trip to Venice is complete without a gondola ride. These traditional boats offer a unique perspective of the city's canals and historic buildings. Depending on when your cruise departs or if you arrive early or stay late, gondola rides are particularly romantic in the evening, as the setting sun casts a golden glow over the water. For an extra-special experience, consider booking a serenaded gondola ride, where musicians will sing classic Italian songs as you drift through the canals.

Murano and Burano islands

A short boat ride from Venice, the islands of Murano and Burano are acclaimed for their artisanal crafts. Murano is renowned for its glassblowing workshops, where you can watch artisans at work and purchase gorgeous handmade glass pieces. Burano is known for its brightly colored houses and intricate lacemaking. A visit to these islands also provides an escape from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Popular Venice excursions

burano tour venice

Cultural and historical excursions

One of the most popular city excursions is a guided tour of St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace. These tours often include skip-the-line access, allowing you to bypass the long lines and delve straight into the history and artistry of these iconic landmarks. The knowledgeable guides provide fascinating insights into the history of Venice and its rise as a maritime power.

Active excursions

A gondola ride combined with a walking tour is an excellent option for staying active. Start with a scenic gondola ride through the canals, followed by a guided walking and food tour through the winding streets of Venice. You'll get a good taste of the best of Venice in a short amount of time.

Island-hopping

Excursions to the Murano, Burano and Torcello islands are a popular choice if you've been to Venice and are looking for a new excursion. These tours typically include visits to glassblowing workshops in Murano, Burano's colorful streets and Torcello's historic churches. Each island offers its unique charm and a different aspect of Venetian culture.

Best Venice beaches near the cruise port

burano tour venice

The closest beach to Venice, Lido di Venezia, has a sandy shoreline and a range of beach clubs where you can chill all day. This barrier island can provide a beachy escape from the city crowds (although it's also sometimes crowded) and offers opportunities for sunbathing and swimming.

Lido is about 4.3 miles from the port, and the journey takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the transport you use. The fastest way to the barrier island is by a private water taxi from the port, which takes about 30 minutes.

To save some cash, walk about 20 minutes from the port. You can also take the People Mover train (the ride takes about five minutes and a one-way ticket costs 1.50 euros) to Piazzale Roma. From there, take Vaporetto Line 1 or Line 5.1 directly to Lido. For a scenic tour of the Grand Canal, take Line 1 in one of the directions, but know the trip is longer, close to an hour. Line 5.1 is more direct and takes about 45 minutes.

How to get around Venice on your own

On foot: Venice is a pedestrian city, and many of its main attractions are within walking distance of each other. Strolling through the narrow streets and across the picturesque bridges is one of the best ways to experience the city's charm and discover hidden gems.

Water taxi: In Venice, water taxis offer a quicker and more convenient way to get around. These private boats can be pricey, though, costing around 70-80 euros for a short trip for up to four passengers. However, they offer a direct and comfortable mode of transportation, especially for those who are traveling with luggage or in a group.

Vaporetto (water bus): The Vaporetto is Venice's primary mode of public transport. These water buses run regular routes along the Grand Canal and to the outer islands. They provide an affordable and efficient way to navigate the city, with tickets available for single journeys costing 7.50 euros and a 24-hour card for unlimited travel costing 20 euros.

Venice restaurants near the cruise port

The Cannaregio and Dorsoduro districts are known for their authentic Venetian cuisine and are great places to explore for a meal. Here, you can find traditional dishes such as cicchetti, risotto al nero di seppia (squid ink risotto) and fresh seafood dishes.

These areas are less touristy than the eateries near St. Mark's Square and usually have better quality food at more reasonable prices. Don't forget to try a classic Venetian dessert like tiramisu or a refreshing gelato from one of the many gelaterias scattered around the city.

Venice cruise port shopping

burano tour venice

Venice is a great shopping city with a mix of high-end boutiques, local artisan shops and vibrant markets. The historic Rialto Market is an excellent place to start. Near the Rialto Bridge, it is a lively spot where locals pick up fresh produce, seafood and other Venetian specialties. It is easy to get lost just wandering the stalls here. The surrounding shops also offer an assortment of souvenirs, from Venetian carnival masks and handmade lace to Murano glass and marbled paper.

Head to Calle Larga XXII Marzo for high-end boutiques. Along this street, you'll find international brands like Gucci, Prada and Louis Vuitton, as well as local designers. It's a shopper's paradise, offering everything from fashion to jewelry and accessories.

Mercerie is another bustling shopping street connecting St. Mark's Square to the Rialto Bridge. It's lined with a mix of local shops and international stores, offering a wide range of products, including clothing, accessories and souvenirs. The Mercerie is excellent for finding unique Venetian items like handcrafted masks and glasswork.

Free things to do in the Venice cruise port

One of the best free ways to experience Venice is simply by wandering through its narrow streets and canals. The city's architecture, bridges and hidden squares are delightful to explore on foot, and you'll often stumble upon charming cafes and shops.

While some attractions in the square require an entrance fee, it costs nothing to walk around St. Mark's Square and admire the stunning architecture of St. Mark's Basilica, the Campanile and the surrounding buildings. The square is also excellent for people-watching and soaking in Venice's vibrant vibe.

Walking across the iconic Rialto Bridge for views of the Grand Canal is a free activity in Venice. The bridge is a piece of history, and the surrounding area teems with shops and lively cafes.

Bottom line

Stazione Marittima offers easy access to the city center, famed for its unique blend of historic charm, cultural richness and scenic beauty. From exploring iconic landmarks like St. Mark's Basilica and the Doge's Palace to enjoying a romantic gondola ride through the canals, this enchanting city has something for everyone.

Despite the challenges posed by mass tourism, Venice remains a must-visit destination, offering unforgettable experiences and a glimpse into Italy's rich heritage.
