T he traditional family cruise isn’t like it used to be. Nowadays, popular cruise lines like MSC , Royal Caribbean and Disney are going the extra mile for families of all sizes and age ranges. From late-night babysitting and all-ages entertainment to customizable air and land arrangements and educational excursions, the best cruises for families offer amenities and activities so thoughtful, they’ve become equally as enjoyable for adults as they are for kids.

Thanks to pre-planned, tried-and-true itineraries and many all-inclusive options (onboard spending can really add up), a family can experience not just one but several destinations, enjoy their own onboard activities and still meet in the middle for some family bonding—all without the stress. Below, we’ve selected the best cruises for families in 2024, from sails with a focus on younger children to expedition-minded voyages and cruises for groups with a wide variety of interests.

Editor’s Picks:

  • Best Cruise For Families Overall: MSC Cruises , MSC Seascape

Best Luxury Cruise For Families: Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection, Evrima

Best all-inclusive cruise for families: royal caribbean, wonder of the seas, best cruise for families with young children: disney cruise line, disney wish, best cruise for families with teenagers: celebrity cruises, celebrity ascent, best cruise for large families: princess cruises, sapphire princess, best cruise for families with different interests: norwegian cruise line, norwegian prima, best cruise for active families: hx (hurtigruten expeditions), ms santa cruz ii, best cruise for families overall: msc cruises, msc seascape.

The MSC Seascape features 11 dining venues, 20 bars and lounges and 13 pools.

MSC Seascape

Recommended Itinerary: 7-Night Western Caribbean From Miami
Departure: July through January
All Star Amenities: 11 dining venues, 13 pools and unique shore excursions such as the Excursions Explorer Package, MSC Bike Adventours and MSC Protectours

With four- to 14-night Caribbean cruises to and from Miami, Brooklyn or Orlando running consistently, MSC Cruises takes the headache away from the planning logistics. Its newest ship, MSC Seascape , has everything a family could need onboard: 11 dining venues, 20 bars and lounges, 13 pools and water activities and more. For children up to 17 years old, there are activities such as sports, competitions, parties and more across five different clubs included in the stay. Each club is dedicated to a specific age group, so kids can socialize with those their own age. The ship also offers baby and toddler services, so mom and dad can get some (much needed, surely) time to enjoy the cruise’s many dining and entertainment amenities.

Evrima, Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection

Recommended Itinerary: 11-Night Barcelona to Rome
Departure: April through October
All-Star Amenities: Full-service spa with a sauna; steam room and quiet areas; onboard classical and jazz performances

It doesn’t get more luxurious than the Ritz-Carlton—on land or sea. For families who want to spend time together but who still want to prioritize a white-glove experience, the Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has you covered with its first-ever ship, Evrima , which launched late last summer and is limited to suites only. Families will soon find that the real onboard luxury on this ship is the children’s programming: for kids aged four to 12, the cruise offers a comprehensive creative program complete with a dedicated, full-time youth counselor for an added fee per session. Take one of the Mediterranean routes (currently, there are 46) and advantage of the concierge’s customized air, land and hotel arrangements. All you have to do is show up and enjoy the service for which the Ritz-Carlton has become known.

Wonder of the Seas is Royal Caribbean's most family-friendly ship.

Wonder Of The Seas

Recommended Itinerary: 7-Night Eastern Caribbean
Departure: Monthly
All-Star Amenities: Six record-breaking water slides; Surfside, a family-friendly neighborhood; Thrill Island, a waterpark with rock climbing, mini-golf and more

Beyond all-inclusive pricing packages, Royal Caribbean really has it all. On Wonder of the Seas , the largest cruise ship in the world, families can find the Ultimate Abyss, a waterslide that boasts over 10 stories of height, plus a surf stimulator and zip lining for teens. The cruise line’s award-winning children’s program for ages six months to 12 years old, Adventure Ocean, includes immersive playrooms and even climbable creations (fees apply for infants six months to 36 months old and late-night programming for ages 3 to 11 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.). But there’s more where that came from: for ultimate family time, Royal Caribbean features Surfside, a neighborhood for families to enjoy all day with an aqua park and plenty of dining options, and Thrill Island, an over-the-top waterpark including a redefined rock climbing wall, a mini-golf course, and more.

Disney Wish

Recommended Itinerary: 3-Night Bahamian from Port Canaveral
Departure: March through December 2023; January through September 2024
All-Star Amenities: Theatrical/cinematic dining experiences that incorporate favorites like Marvel and Frozen

Less than a year old, Disney Wish is a 4,000-person ship that is as popular as ever, thanks to its range of offerings that keep the little ones busy. Onboard, children will not only find their favorite characters from Disney, Marvel, Star Wars , and Pixar films, but be able to live out their fantasies through experiences like dining with Frozen ’s Elsa, Olaf, and others over a theatrical meal. The best part of this cruise line is arguably the staff, who are well-acclimated to handling overtired children or picky eaters and keeping things as seamless as possible—which, as most parents know, is truly priceless. Plus, the 3-night voyages are the perfect length for a quick getaway.

Celebrity Ascent

Recommended Itinerary: 12-Night European Route From Barcelona To Athens
Departure: From May 2024
All-Star Amenities: Spa treatments available for the whole family with separate kid and teen offerings

While Celebrity Cruises has a range of amenities that are fantastic for the whole family (movie nights beneath the stars, cupcake decorating, and beyond), its Camp at Sea program is particularly interesting for more mature children and teens. With over 500 art, culinary, and recreational activities available, the teen-specific category (for those aged 13 to 17 years old) includes silent discos, sports competitions, video game challenges, socialization with other teens onboard, and more. The cruise line is introducing another ship this fall— Celebrity Ascent —that has all of these offerings for kids and teens plus some extra special ones for adults. The spa, for example, is state-of-the-art and includes a kid- and teen-specific menu, making it an activity the entire family can enjoy.

Sapphire Princess

Recommended Itinerary: 7-Day Jeff Corwin's Nature & Adventure Voyage From Vancouver to Anchorage
Departure: September 6-13, 2023
All-Star Amenities: OceanMedallion, a wearable device which grants access to accommodations and even tracks other members of your party onboard

While Princess Cruises offers routes through the Caribbean, Europe and more, its Alaskan journeys are the cruise line’s crown jewel. Its 7-Day Jeff Corwin's Nature & Adventure Voyage on Sapphire Princess , in particular, features a fun-filled itinerary from Vancouver through multiple ports in Alaska ending in Anchorage (Whittier), Alaska. Children age three to 12 can participate in Camp Discovery, full of science-based activities associated with the Discovery Channel’s programming lineup, including MythBusters and Shark Week . Kids of any age can meet at their respective lounges (The Treehouse for ages 3 to 7, The Lodge for ages 8 to 12 or The Beach House for ages 13 to 17) to socialize with others, and entire families can partake in Animal Planet-affiliated shore excursions or meet under the stars to enjoy films on the big screen. With so much to do, larger families are sure to be kept busy while learning new things each day.

Exterior of Norwegian Prima.

Norwegian Prima

Recommended Itinerary: 9-Day Mediterranean: Italy, France And Spain
Departure: From November 2023
All-Star Amenities: The sheer amount and variety of children’s programming

With posts all around the world, Norwegian Cruise Line offers extensive destination options aptly timed with holiday breaks, including routes through Italy, France and Spain to others between Santorini, Mykonos and Florence. Onboard its over 3,000-passenger Norwegian Prima , expect tons of family-friendly programming: for children 6 months to 4 years of age, there’s the Guppies Program, giving space for children and parents to play; for ages 3 to 12 years old, there’s the Splash Academy that features free, interest-based programming including sports and art; and for teens (13 to 17 years old), the Entourage programming includes video games, movies, music, socializing, and more. The cruise line also offers family activities such as mini-golf and scavenger hunts, and adults can enjoy amenities like a spa, casino and theater while their children are supervised.

MS Santa Cruz II

Recommended Itinerary: 12-Day South America Expedition Cruise With Stops In Machu Picchu and Galápagos
Departure: Year round
All-Star Amenities: An onboard photographer who shares his tips and tricks for capturing wildlife photography

Based in London, HX (formerly Hurtigruten Expeditions) is a cruise line that clearly understands adventure. Its MS Santa Cruz II ship in particular provides an intimate experience through the Galápagos Islands with just a 90-passenger capacity. Families can choose from a range of routes, including a 7-day route focusing on wildlife starting from a UNESCO World Heritage City, Quito or a 12-day journey tracing Charles Darwin’s footsteps through the natural wonders of the destination. The ship also offers several different accommodation arrangements with cabins for single travelers, couples, and families, as well as common areas to enjoy together including its Sky Deck, Science Center, library, fitness room and hot tub.

Which Cruise Line Is The Most Family Friendly?

Depending on your family’s travel style, age range and group size, there are several cruises that stand out as particularly family friendly. Our top overall pick is MSC Cruises . In particular, we’re a fan of the MSC Seascape , which has everything a family could need onboard: 11 dining venues, 20 bars and lounges, 13 pools and water activities. For families with younger children, we recommend Disney Cruise Line , particularly the Disney Wish , and for families with teens, we recommend Celebrity’s Celebrity Ascent .

Are Cruises Worth It For Families?

Yes, cruises are worth it for families thanks to the ease of having food, activities and accommodations for a wide range of age ranges all in one place. Depending on the type of cruise you book, families will be able to see multiple countries all in one trip, with many cabins even offering bunk beds or suites for families to stay together. Some cruise lines even offer free kids fares and other cruise deals for kids throughout the year, so there’s plenty of value to be found on a cruise as well.

Is Royal Caribbean Or Carnival Better For Kids?

Royal Caribbean is one of our top selections for family cruises. The cruise line’s award-winning children’s program for ages six months to 12 years old, Adventure Ocean, includes immersive playrooms and even climbable creations (fees apply for infants six months to 36 months old and late-night programming for ages 3 to 11 from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m.). Even families with older children will find plenty to do on two of the largest ships in the world, Wonder of the Seas and the newly debuted Icon of the Seas .

12 best family cruise lines for all ages

Find your perfect match among these family-favorite cruise lines and their most kid-friendly ships..

Gina Kramer

Searching for the best family cruise can be overwhelming. Heck, even as someone who has spent more than 10 years working in the cruise industry and sailed with every major line, I still scratch my head over all the options. With so many cruise lines serving kids, and new ships debuting every year, narrowing down your choices requires some expert assistance.

Every cruise line has its own “personality,” from the thrill-seeking fun of Royal Caribbean to the playful magic of Disney Cruise Line and the free-spirited aura of Norwegian Cruise Line. Peel back the layers even more, and you’ll find that each ship has nuances when it comes to activities, staterooms, and other features.

Just remember: Bigger is not always better. An example of this is Norwegian Cruise Line, whose Norwegian Encore and Norwegian Bliss (some of their biggest ships) have a more mature, adult-centric vibe onboard that’s not really conducive to sailing with youngsters. Some of their smaller ships are a much better option, despite not having as many bells and whistles.

To help get you determine the best option for your family, here are the 12 cruise lines I recommend for families and their most kid-friendly ships. (Sailing with babies or toddlers? Here’s a more comprehensive breakdown of the best cruises for kids under 5 .)

STRETCH YOUR WALLET: 8 cruise lines that let kids sail free

1. Disney Cruise Line

Disney Wish – Upper Decks

There’s no denying that Disney Cruise Line is arguably the best cruise line for families. Even those who don’t consider themselves Disney fanatics will be moved by the magic across its fleet. Cutting-edge technology and entertainment are infused into nearly every aspect of the cruise, from dining to the production shows.

The kids’ clubs are whimsical spaces, with different themes for each ship, and have the most robust care options for all ages, of any line. They’re divided into three groups: Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab (kids three to 12), Edge (tweens 11 to 14), and Vibe (teens 14 to 17). The way they’re organized enables siblings and other family members or friends to stick together.

On the sun decks, families can enjoy swimming pools (including one just for kids), as well as different rides that very by ship. Thoughtfully designed staterooms with lots of storage, bunk beds, big bathrooms, privacy curtains, and other features are the icing on the cake.

Best Disney ships for kids: Any ship in the fleet.

2. Royal Caribbean

Wonder Dunes - Deck 16 Aft Starboard Wonder of the Seas - Royal Caribbean International

Adventurous spirits are drawn to Royal Caribbean for its bevy of thrill-seeking activities. A rock-climbing wall, surf and sky-diving simulators, the Splashaway Bay water park, wet and dry slides, and other recreational fun (all varying by ship) underpin a youthful energy onboard. Bigger ships keep the upbeat vibe going with themed “neighborhoods” like the Boardwalk with a merry-go-round, and even more adrenaline-pumping features like a top-deck zipline.

Kids can retreat to the Adventure Ocean youth club, a massive space that caters to different age groups: Aquanauts (three to five), Explorers (six to eight), and Voyagers (nine to 11), as well as tweens and teens (12 to 17). Littles six to 36 months have special programming, as well. Various family cabin categories ensure there’s something for everyone.

Best Royal Caribbean ships for kids: Utopia of the Seas, Icon of the Seas , Symphony of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Wonder of the Seas , Allure of the Seas, Oasis of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Quantum of the Seas, Ovation of the Seas, Odyssey of the Seas, and Spectrum of the Seas

Note: Royal Caribbean’s Voyager- and Freedom-class ships aren’t my favorites for families, generally speaking, but do offer ideal atmospheres and amenities for those with littles under 5.

INSIDE LOOK: Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas is even bigger, bolder, and better than I expected

3. Lindblad Expeditions (National Geographic)

Family walking on rocky beach with small expedition cruise ship in the background

What could be more fun for a kid, than going on a scavenger hunt with a real “treasure” map? On Lindblad Expeditions , families can find puffins in Iceland, get a close-up view of glaciers in Alaska, search for blue-footed boobies in the Galapagos Islands, and encounter more treasures on the line’s destination-focused itineraries.

Through its partnership with National Geographic, Lindblad Expeditions offers immersive programming for young adventurers, allowing them to participate in hands-on experiences, such as collecting plankton by dropping a net on the side of a zodiac, and recording wildlife sightings in a field notebook. Kids can even earn their zodiac “driver’s license.”

With most of your time spent off the ship and engaged in nature, life onboard is pretty laid-back. There’s no kids’ club, but most ships do have a pool or hot tub as well as a lounge space for games and low-key entertainment.

4. Princess Cruises

“The Love Boat” cruise line continues to set the stage for families who love tradition and a slower pace. This makes Princess Cruises an excellent choice for those with tweens and teens. Some of the line’s most revered traditions include Movies Under the Stars (complete with popcorn and cozy blankets), guided stargazing, and family cooking classes. Meanwhile, its partnership with Discovery welcomes itinerary-specific, top-deck activities on select sailings.

Every ship comes with Camp Discovery, the kids’ club divided as follows: The Treehouse (ages three to seven), The Lodge (ages eight to 12), and The Beach House (ages 13 to 17). Others have their own kid-friendly accoutrements, such as the Reef Family Splash Zone on Caribbean Princess, and batting cages and simulated laser shooting range on Regal Princess and Royal Princess.

Best Princess ships for kids: Sun Princess, Caribbean Princess, Regal Princess, Royal Princess, Sky Princess, Ruby Princess, Enchanted Princess, Emerald Princess, and Island Princess

5. Explora Journeys

view of interior of Nautilus Club for Kids -

Families seeking a more “white glove” experience will feel warmly embraced by Explora Journeys . It caters to children more than any other luxury line, with a dedicated youth club and other goodies (like mini bathrobes and slippers) to make kids feel extra special.

The nature-themed Nautilus Club makes learning fun, through games, crafts, and other activities designed for all ages, ranging from three to 17. (Three- to five-year-olds can enjoy the space during set times, with a parent or caretaker.) In lieu of the frills and thrills you’ll find on big mainstream ships, Explora Journeys invests more in kid-friendly enrichment and excursions designed for families.

Suites comprise all the accommodations onboard Explora Journeys’ ships and can be connected for more space. In-room toys are available for the littlest passengers.

6. Norwegian Cruise Line

Free-spirited families, rejoice. Norwegian Cruise Line rides its own wave in the mainstream cruise industry, with no set dining times or dress codes. This makes it easy for families to savor the seemingly endless activities onboard, without worrying about a schedule. There’s also a nice mix of adventure and relaxed fun, so everyone in the family can go at their own pace.

Standout features, which vary by ship, include bowling, rock-climbing and rappelling walls, a ropes course, multisensory slides, and waterparks. The Splash Academy kids’ club hosts different age groups: three to five, six to nine, and 10 to 12. Teens 13 to 17 also enjoy their own space.

The entertainment onboard is some of the best I’ve experienced on a family ship, and the diversity in dining options means even the pickiest eaters will be satisfied. When it comes to accommodations, there’s immense value in booking The Haven, a section that’s separate from the rest of the ship, offerings its own rooms with butler service, a pool, restaurant, and more. The Two-Bedroom Family Villa with Balcony suite comfortably sleeps up to six.

Best Norwegian ships for kids: Norwegian Prima, Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Epic, Norwegian Dawn, Norwegian Joy, and Norwegian Star

STAY COOL: The best cruise ship water parks and private islands for families

River cruise lines are quickly gaining steam as a top family vacation option. A handful of companies have cultivated the best river cruise itineraries for kids , but only cruise line has built a ship with everything a family could want.

On A-Rosa Sena , you’ll find a kids’ club, main pool and separate children’s pool, a putting green and other top-deck games, and plethora of activities that include designing your own t-shirt, a treasure hunt on the ship, and face painting. Parents and caretakers will love the added comfort of large staterooms (including one just for families), family tables at the restaurants, and special menus for their most discerning eaters.

It’s all enough to keep your kids busy when excursions aren’t taking place. And the family-specific tours (a la Comics Station Antwerp, an indoor theme park inspired by Belgian comic heroes) are definitely something you don’t want to miss.

Best A-Rosa ships for kids: A-Rosa Sena

8. MSC Cruises

MSC Meraviglia, Polar Aquapark

MSC Cruises ’ Mediterranean roots add a sprinkle of culture to its ships. The big draw for families, however, is the breadth of offerings across its fleet.

Ample dining options, impressive kids’ clubs and programming, and outdoor recreation ranging from ropes courses to water parks and pools, depending on the ship, are among the highlights. (MSC Seascape has a whopping 13 swimming pools.) Connecting cabin categories, as well as suites in MSC Cruises’ Yacht Club—a private enclave with its own rooms, pool, and restaurant—offer more space for families who need it.

Partnerships with Lego and Chicco baby gear amp up the offerings in the children’s club, which includes a Baby Club for littles, a Mini Club for three- to six-year-olds, and Juniors Club for seven- to 11-year-olds. Kids 12 to 17 have access to their own Young Club and Teens Club.

Best MSC ships for kids: MSC Seascape, MSC Seaside, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Preziosa, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa, MSC Bellissima, and MSC Armonia

9. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival's BOLT coaster can speeds of up to 40 miles per hour over an 800-foot track (Photo: Carnival Cruise Line

When I say “not all ships are created equal,” Carnival is one of the first cruise lines that come to mind. Its older ships unabashedly serve more party-hardy vacationers, but the colloquial booze cruise is a rare sight on newer ships. You can thank Carnival’s investment in more kid-friendly features, such as exclusive Family Harbor cabins and amenities, and more adventure-packed sun decks with everything from ropes courses to roller coasters.

Carnival ships have always had the Camp Ocean youth club. Organized into three age groups—Penguins (two to five years old), Stingrays (six to eight years old), and Sharks (nine to 11 years old)—it treats kids to arts and crafts, music, games, and on newer ships, bigger and more enchanting spaces. Other family highlights include mini bowling, outdoor movies, and a Dr. Seuss Bookville reading space.

Best Carnival ships for kids: Carnival Horizon, Carnival Celebration, Carnival Vista, Carnival Jubilee, Carnival Panorama, and Mardi Gras

PRO TIP: Here’s how to save money on a Carnival cruise

10. Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection

Children's club on cruise ship with lounging cubes, chairs, and toys

Got Marriott Bonvoy points to spend? Consider putting them toward a Ritz Carlton cruise . Akin to the luxury brand’s land-based hotels, the cruise line pampers families with five-star quality across its service, accommodations, and amenities.

“Ritz Kids” aged four to 12 can access their own special, hangout spot as well as a comprehensive roster of activities that is both fun and educational. Activities are also able to be customized, based on the number and ages of youngsters aboard a given sailing. All rooms on Ritz Carlton Yacht Collection’s ships are suites, so families are guaranteed more space. Some also can be connected to create two-bedroom suites with expanded living and dining areas.

Best Ritz Carlton ships for kids: Any ship in the fleet

BUCKET LIST TIP: When choosing the best Alaska cruise for your family, ship size matters

11. Hapag-Lloyd Cruises

Children's club with swing, bean bag chairs, circular bench, and toys

Since its first “pleasure cruise” set sail in 1891, German luxury line Hapag-Lloyd has built a reputation of quality over quantity. Its small fleet packs a mighty punch for families, with separate children’s clubs for younger and older kids; carefully crafted family excursions, including some that allow kids to go without their parents; a children’s spa package; and even a cute, sailing bear mascot named Cap’n Knopf, who leads games and activities throughout each sailing.

The line’s newer family ship, Europa 2, has separate clubs for two- to three-year-olds, four- to 10-year-olds, and 11- to 15-year-olds. Activities are designed to tap into kids’ imaginations, while also offering fun ship tours like visiting the captain at the bridge. Family Apartments afford the most space, spread out among two separate areas, and make kids feel right at home with small furniture in one of the living spaces and console of toys and games.

Note: Hapag-Lloyd is a German company, but Europa 2 offers bilingual “International Cruises.” The ship makes English-speaking passengers feel welcome, with documentation and ship-wide announcements offered in English, and English-speaking shore excursions.

Best Hapag-Lloyd ships for kids: Europa 2

12. Hurtigruten

Woman holding young girl's hand and swaying her on rocky terrain with icebergs in the background

Is Norway on your bucket list? No cruise line does it better than Hurtigruten , a Norwegian company with more than 125 years of experience sailing the region.

Kids who can thrive at a slower pace will be able to experience the majestic landscapes and culture through interactive programming—that begins with a book of fun exercises they receive upon boarding—as well as wildlife spotting, curated family excursions, and gatherings at the onboard bakery for games, puzzles, and crafts. The Young Explorers Program is designed for ages six to 13, but older and younger children are still welcome.

More opportunities to immerse yourself in Norwegian culture include local food tastings on the ship (think fresh Lyngen shrimp in the spring, or cloudberries during the fall months).

Taking a cruise as a family is a great way to allow everyone to have a bit of freedom while maintaining togetherness, since everyone doesn’t need to be together 100% of the time.

Ships on any cruise line offer a variety of activities for almost every age group and a multitude of dining options for even the pickiest of palates. Also, many ships have places where kids can go and participate in activities or just hang out with other kids, allowing the adults some time alone.

When you’re seeking a cruise for your family, consider:

The itinerary: Does this cruise go where you want to go? Are shore excursions available that meet your family’s needs?

The cabin: Will everyone fit comfortably in the cabin you choose?

The activities: What types of activities are available for your kids? Are there places that are just for the adults?

The dining options: Are the types of foods available that your family likes? Can you eat when you want?

Keep in mind most cruise lines require children to be at least 6 months old at the time of sailing; however, the minimum is 1 year old for some sailings.

Since kids will often be separated from their parents, most cruise lines issue wristbands to children listing their muster station and other information so staff knows where to take them in case of a shipboard emergency.

Here’s a starting point to help you decide the best cruises for your family.

Disney Cruise Line: best overall cruise for families

family life cruise cost

The deck of the Disney Wonder. (Photo by Carissa Rawson)

When you think of family activities, Disney usually comes to mind. Disney Cruise Line has six ships, each painted in the red and black colors inspired by Mickey Mouse. Even the ship’s horn plays the first seven notes of “When You Wish Upon a Star.”

The ships bring a lot of the Disney experience on board with character interactions, immersive experiences and themes.

There are live shows for kids, fireworks, pools, splash pads, deck parties and more.

Some of the cabins are designed for families with a split bath-and-a-half design that includes a sink and bathing area in one room and a sink and toilet in another room.

Once the kids are on board, there are a variety of activities for them in Disney's Youth Clubs. These feature several distinct physical spaces and activities that are based on the child’s age and vary by ship.

The Oceaneer Club is for kids ages 3 to 10, and the experiences are different on each Disney ship.

Edge is for tweens ages 11 to 14 and is a hangout space offering age-specific activities.

Vibe is for teens 14 to 17 and has an exclusive physical space as well as activities like dance parties and karaoke.

The “it’s a small world” nursery is for the little ones 6 months to age 3. There is a fee for this service, and space is limited.

In-room babysitting isn't available.

Don’t worry, Disney ships aren't just about the kids. The ships have areas that are for adults only. Certain nightclubs and lounges are only for adults, as are some pools, the spa and at least one restaurant.

Royal Caribbean: best for kids

Royal Caribbean has 28 ships ranging in size from the smaller Rhapsody of the Seas, which holds 2,416 passengers on 12 decks, to the new Icon of the Seas, which can have 5,610 passengers on 20 decks. There really is a wide variety with something for everyone.

The ships are often colorful and are built for fun with all kinds of onboard activities like rock-climbing walls, surfing simulators, pools and splash pads, while the newer and bigger ships have water parks, indoor parks, ice rinks, bumper cars and more. Sometimes, you might even forget you’re on a ship and think you’re either at a resort or an amusement park. It’s fun to see the kids around the ship with their new friends enjoying activities like costume parades, scavenger hunts and more.

All ships have a variety of dining options, including a main dining room, specialty restaurants and other casual options for all kinds of diners.

Royal Caribbean’s Adventure Ocean kids club has a variety of activities, many with an adventure and science theme, making the vacation fun and educational. The program is divided by age. Aquanauts is for kids ages 3 to 5, Explorers is for kids 6 to 8, and Voyagers is for kids 9 to 12, and the activities and physical spaces are age-appropriate. There are also programs for tweens and teens with hangout spaces and arcades.

The Royal Babies & Tots program is for the younger set, ages 6 months to 3 years, and is on most ships. There is a cost for nursery services, and some even allow parents to drop off their kids outside of set program times.

For parents who want to get out and have some late-night fun, the Late Night Party Zone for kids and teens offers extended hours after 10 p.m. with special programming for a fee.

As for dining, Royal Caribbean offers My Family Time Dining for families with kids ages 3 to 11. This dining option plans that kids will finish their meal in 45 minutes. Then, staff from Adventure Ocean picks up the kids for evening activities, leaving the adults to linger over the rest of their meal.

Sometimes, the cruise line has a promotion where kids 12 and younger sail free.

Norwegian Cruise Line: also great

Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) has 19 ships divided among nine classes.

Many ships have waterslides, racetracks, laser tag, bowling, mini golf, splash pads and more. Youth programs offer age-appropriate activities on all ships except for the Norwegian Spirit, and the activities vary by ship. Youths are divided into two groups, based on age: Splash Academy is for ages 3 to 12 and Entourage is for teens 13 to 17.

Splash Academy has a variety of activities for kids, like creative play and games, that are offered only when the ship is at sea. Entourage has a hangout area and offers activities for teens that can take place around the ship. The area often becomes a teen dance club at night.

For the little ones, there is no set drop-off program. According to NCL, the Guppies Open Play area “offers a play space for parents to interact with their infants/ babies/toddlers 6 months to 3 years old and/or children in diapers.”

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. If parents want some late-night fun, group babysitting is available for a fee for kids ages 3 to 12.

On certain cruises, the third and fourth passengers in a cabin sail for free.

Carnival Cruise Line: also great

Carnival Cruise Line has 26 ships most have activities like sports zones, water parks, ropes courses and mini golf. A few ships have Bolt, a roller coaster that allows passengers to control how fast they go. All Carnival ships have a video arcade with a variety of games. Some of these activities are included in the fare, while others have an additional fee.

Carnival’s youth program is fleetwide and is divided into groups based on age ranging from 6 months to 17.

Turtles: The Turtles program is for kids 6 months to 2 years. A fee applies, and times vary.

Camp Ocean: Camp Ocean is for kids who are a little older and are further divided into three categories — Penguins for ages 2 to 5, Stingrays for ages 6 to 8 and Sharks for ages 9 to 11. Kids play together in organized age-appropriate activities and eat meals together.

Teen programs: Two programs are for tweens and teens. Circle “C” is for kids ages 12 to 14, and Club O2 is for ages 15 to 17. The C in Circle “C” stands for cruise, chill and connect. Circle “C” is an onboard hangout place and activity space. Club O2 is a hangout place with teen activities like movies, video games and karaoke.

For adults who want time alone, the Night Owls program is for kids ages 6 months to 11 years. It is available each evening from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., and there is an hourly charge per child. The Camp Ocean space takes on a slumber party feel with movies, arts and crafts, snacks and more.

One-on-one babysitting isn't available. As for dining, kids menus are offered in most dining venues on board.

MSC Cruises: best for European destinations

MSC Cruises has had a large presence in Europe for many years and is growing in North America and the Caribbean.

The fleet has 22 ships with European-inspired touches that travel to more than 200 destinations around the world. The line has won awards for family cruises.

Ships have water parks, 4D cinemas, arcades, bowling, simulators and more.

The kids clubs are divided by age, and care for babies and toddlers under 3 is included in the fare.

Mini Club is for ages 3 to 6, Junior Club is for ages 7 to 11, Young Club is for ages 12 to 14 and Teen Club is for ages 15 to 17. Activities range from sports and dance to video games, theme parties and more.

For dining, MSC ships have a variety of options for kids, including special menus, specific areas of the buffet with kid-friendly items, places where kids can eat with other kids, as well as “Happy Dinners,” where staffers will take kids to the kid clubs after they’re finished eating, allowing the adults to finish their meals at their leisure.

MSC sometimes has sales where kids sail free.

Celebrity, Holland America and Princess: best only for multi-generational trips

family life cruise cost

Other cruise lines like Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line and Princess are generally the best for kids unless they have, well, refined tastes. Those ships aren't as colorful or playful as other cruise lines' ships, and they lack amenities like waterslides, go-karts and roller coasters.

Still though, these lines can work for multigenerational family cruises because they often have programs targeted for mature passengers. You can often find things like lectures and card games. And still, they do have kids programs. Celebrity’s program is called Camp at Sea. Holland America’s is the Kids Club. The kids club on Princess is Camp Discovery.

The amount and frequency of activities can often depend on how many children are on each sailing.

I got what I paid for: My cheap family cruise on MSC Seashore

Erica Silverstein

Disney Cruise Line's new ship Disney Wish is getting a lot of attention this summer. But with fares that start at $1,000 per day for a family of four, even a three- or four-night sailing might not be in most families' budgets.

In search of cheap family cruises myself, I followed the deals to a major but more under-the-radar cruise line, MSC Cruises .

MSC offers affordable Caribbean cruises thanks to free kids fares and onboard credits that passengers can put toward things like activities and non-included meals.

I ended up paying less for a balcony cabin on a seven-night cruise to the Caribbean on MSC's newest ship, MSC Seashore, than I would for a three-night Disney Wish cruise in a windowless inside cabin.

Itinerary in hand, I thought I had found the secret to affordable family cruising and that I'd come home bragging to my friends that I had scored an amazing vacation for a fraction of the price folks would pay for other cruises.

The truth is, I got what I paid for and encountered more logistical hassles and nickel-and-diming than I've experienced on most of the 50-plus cruises I've been on.

Can you have a wonderful family vacation on a budget on an MSC Cruises ship? Of course. But for smoother sailing and fewer hassles, you will either need to shell out more money on your MSC voyage — or consider a different cruise line.

About MSC Cruises

MSC Cruises is a Europe-based cruise line, with a large presence in Europe, South America, the Middle East and Africa. Within the last five years, though, the line has made an effort to build and deploy ships with amenities and itineraries that are more targeted at American travelers.

Although it has been offering Caribbean cruises for about a decade now, MSC Cruises recently deployed more of its ships on itineraries out of Florida, many with stops at the line's new private island, Ocean Cay, for a relaxing beach day. The line is known to attract a diverse crowd, including a high percentage of international guests plus a mix of English and Spanish speakers from Florida. The combination of cultures and languages makes the line's onboard vibe a bit different than on other cruise lines that sail from mainland U.S. ports.

Because the line is not as well known among U.S. cruisers as Europeans, MSC Cruises' Florida fares have always been competitively priced and it routinely offers kids-sail-free deals. I paid $2,658 total for four people to share a balcony cabin on a weeklong Western Caribbean cruise in July on the line's newest cruise ship, MSC Seashore.

Contrast that with Disney Wish: The cheapest cruise you can currently book is $2,975 for a three-night cruise in a windowless inside cabin for four people. A seven-night Western Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean's new Wonder of the Seas next July is close to $6,000 for four people; the cheapest balcony cabin I could find on that ship for a weeklong Caribbean cruise was $3,300 in February 2023. (Of course, older ships on these lines will be priced lower.)

In my mind, MSC Cruises' lower fares and mass appeal make it a direct competitor with Carnival Cruise Line. The cheapest balcony cabin I could find for that line's newest ship, Mardi Gras, was $2,475 for four people on a weeklong Western Caribbean cruise in November 2023.

Going into this trip, I knew I wasn't going to find all the bells and whistles of a Royal Caribbean megaship or the service levels and entertainment expertise of a Disney ship. I was simply hoping that getting to experience a brand-new ship at a low price would give a line like Carnival or perhaps the older ships of Royal Caribbean and Norwegian Cruise Line a serious run for their money. Unfortunately, that wasn't quite the case.

MSC Seashore was indeed a beautiful ship with plenty to entertain the whole family. But the logistical operations, dining options and family-friendly amenities were simply not up to par with those offered on other lines. Here's what I took away from my experience.

MSC offers limited free or affordable dining choices

family life cruise cost

Let's start with my biggest gripe about MSC Seashore as an affordable family vacation — the dearth of complimentary dining options. If you want to stick to the food venues where meals are included in your fare and not pay extra for fancy seafood or steak dinners, you have only two options on MSC: the buffet and the main dining room.

Technically, based on the fare class we purchased, we were entitled to free continental breakfast via room service. But since there was no table on our balcony, and only a cluttered desk surface where you could put down dishes, we'd likely be eating in our beds, so we ended up skipping in-cabin food service.

The dining room was my favorite place to eat on board

The main onboard dining room was very good for a mass-market ship. My mom eats gluten-free and I gravitate mostly toward vegetarian options, and the restaurant was able to accommodate our diets well. The kids menu had a lot of great choices for younger sailors (pasta, grilled chicken, hot dogs, etc.) and both my kids ordered from both the junior and regular menus.

The servers worked quickly and were pleasant though not overly friendly. That said, the dining room manager assisted my mother with her food allergies and was amazingly helpful. He would periodically stop by our table to chat or ask if he could help us whenever he saw us around the ship.

As most parents know, formal sit-down dining is not always your best option for three meals a day with kids — especially when dinner lasts 1 1/2 to 2 hours after a long day out in the sun, and breakfast and lunch aren't as quick as the grab-and-go buffet. My kids (and I) needed alternatives, as they would on any line. That left the buffet.

The buffet was crowded and uninspiring

Unlike on most big-ship cruise lines I've sailed — including Carnival, Norwegian and Royal Caribbean — the buffet menu aboard MSC Seashore rarely changed and the venue in which the buffet was set out was both crowded and confusing to navigate.

While having a standard list of menu items for breakfast was fine, every lunch service simply included pizza, a pasta station, grab-and-go burgers and hot dogs, a meat-carving station, a small salad bar and a display of deli meat. Some days there was a Mexican station, though it was hard to find in the enormous venue.

Related: The ultimate guide to cruise ship food and dining

One buffet counter somewhere had a rotating selection of hot lunch dishes, but when I finally found my way there, none of the dishes were labeled. In fact, nothing was labeled anywhere on the buffet, so you just had to guess what you were serving yourself. Hopefully, it's something MSC will rectify, especially for passengers who might have even more stringent dietary requirements than my family.

Only one area of the entire buffet had all the options laid out. That section was, quite frankly, a nightmare. The few times I dared navigate my way there, I found people pushing each other out of the way and cutting in line, which did not result in much friendly feeling among the would-be diners.

Your kids might love having pizza, french fries and burgers every day for lunch (mine certainly did), but after my third lunch of salad and cheese pizza, I was desperate for an alternative. They exist on other lines. Carnival Cruise Line, in addition to a buffet menu that changes daily, offers complimentary Guy Fieri burgers, a deli counter with a variety of options, a Mexican station serving tacos and burritos, 24/7 pizza (that gives the Italian MSC a run for its money) and a sea-day brunch with innovative options. You can even find additional free dining venues on select ships, including Guy Fieri's barbecue restaurant, Shaquille O'Neal's fried chicken restaurant, Mongolian Wok and other Asian or Indian eateries.

TPG tip: If you need an alternative lunch option on MSC Seashore, you can pay extra for a meal in one of the ship's five specialty restaurants, though they're only occasionally open midday. Head to Hola Tacos (a la carte or all you can eat for $17.99 per person), Kaito Sushi Bar (conveyor belt sushi and other Japanese dishes priced a la carte) or Butcher's Cut for its sea day brunch ($12 per person). The prices aren't terrible, but they can quickly add up for family of four — plus, you're looking at another sit-down, waiter-served meal with possibly squirmy kids.

There was no free soft-serve ice cream on MSC

family life cruise cost

One last food gripe: A highlight of every family cruise I've been on is the free soft-serve ice cream on the pool deck. Your kids should be able to get themselves cones when it's hot outside. It's the quintessential vacation experience.

And every family-friendly line I've ever been on has this option. On Royal Caribbean's Wonder of the Seas , the center of the pool deck is a multimachine soft-serve ice cream station where you can help yourself to as much free ice cream as you'd like. Heck, even my very grown-up cruise on Windstar's Star Pride had free soft-serve by the pool and alfresco grill restaurant.

That is, every family-friendly line except MSC.

MSC Cruises does have exceptional gelato at nearly every poolside bar as well as at the Venchi chocolate store/bar/gelateria. However, it costs $4 for a baby size and $6 for a regular size. The same pool deck bars also have a soft-serve machine, which is located behind the bar. The chocolate and vanilla are complimentary, but only if you purchase a pricy beverage package . If you're on a budget, as we were, and don't upgrade to the package, that soft-serve will cost the same as the gelato. No freebies for the kiddos, either.

There are only two ways to get free ice cream on MSC Seashore. Either you order it for dessert in the main dining room and get whatever flavor they're serving that day (there's no choice), or you head to the one buffet counter that offers snacks for one hour from 4 to 5 p.m. every day, and you get in line with scores of other hot and hungry cruisers to ask for one of two flavors (usually vanilla, chocolate or strawberry) being doled out by one extremely overworked server.

It may seem like a small thing, and I probably thought it was before this particular sailing, but having free ice cream in the afternoon each day has made other cruises feel like truly special vacations, and my kids and I missed that feeling aboard MSC Seashore.

TPG tip: Only the Alcohol-Free and Minors drinks packages include soft-serve ice cream. Book your drinks package online in advance to save 15% off package prices. Or, book a cabin in the Yacht Club or Aurea fare class and a drinks package is included.

Our cabin was great — with 1 exception

family life cruise cost

Our standard balcony cabin was nice, and my family of four survived remarkably well in one room for a week , which is reason enough to thank MSC Cruises for a successful vacation.

The 172-square-foot cabin was not large, but it had more usable storage space than I anticipated. The sofa that converted into bunk beds meant that my kids weren't sleeping right above my head, and being able to separate the king-size bed into two twins was handy since I was traveling with my mother instead of my husband. Our balcony was a reasonable size and had two chairs and an ottoman, so you could put your feet up.

I had a few minor quibbles (as you do in compact cruise ship cabins) about the shower size and the lack of a balcony table, but one design element did bother me — especially with four people in the room.

It was the closet. In our cabin, the closet was located by my mom's side of the bed, with only minimal space between it and the mattress, which meant that it was difficult for me to get stuff out of the closet, especially if she was actually sitting or lying on the bed. My kids are still small, so I was able to store most of their stuff in the drawers across from their bunks. But if you have older kids who require more closet space, it might be a pain to have to squeeze by the bed to get anything from the closet.

Many other cruise lines solve this problem by putting the closets in the cabin hallway across from the bathroom. That makes them a lot easier to get at — even if your cabinmates might not be able to walk down the hallway while you're debating the day's fashion choices.

TPG tip: Some MSC Seashore cabins swap the position of the bed and the seating area, so the closet is next to the couch. This would be preferable for a couple or a family with one child, but not for a family where you'll have to squeeze by the bunk bed to access the closet. To avoid this layout entirely, you'll either want to upgrade to a suite or downgrade to an inside cabin, where the closet is next to an easy chair. (Though think twice before squeezing four people into a 150-square-foot room where the kids will be in bunks above the adults' twin beds.)

The kids club had video games and Legos, but 1 kid still wouldn't go

family life cruise cost

As an adult, I'm not allowed into any kids club activities. Personally, I was intrigued by MSC's MasterChef at Sea event and the Fire and Ice live video game, but my kids weren't interested in those activities, so I can't report back on how fun they are.

What I can tell you is that my daughter, who loved the kids clubs on Royal Caribbean and Princess Cruises , was not a fan of MSC Seashore's club and refused to go most of the time. It's hard to say how much this was a fault of the kids club versus my daughter's capricious personality.

On paper, MSC Seashore's kids club looks pretty good. It offers free babysitting for 3-and-unders, which is rare in the industry. The rest of the kids club is divided into groups for ages 3 to 6 and 7 to 11 (both my kids fell into that latter group), and tweens and teens are technically separate but shared a hangout space. When I toured the Junior Club where my kids would be on the first day, I saw a bright play space with large windows, two foosball tables and cool electronics like a virtual piano.

My daughter's report was that, unlike on Royal Caribbean, the youth staff didn't set time limits on video game use, so certain kids would "hog" the Nintendo Switches and she could never play the games. (One of these video game hogs was likely her older brother ....) MSC Cruises' promotional material boasts about its partnership with Lego, and she reported that there were always Legos available for free play and she enjoyed that.

She also gave a thumbs-down to the arts and crafts projects, compared to other lines, because it was just "lame coloring" versus an actual craft, such as beading necklaces or making origami. She didn't like any of the organized games as much as on other cruises, especially as they were often mandatory for everyone in the club instead of one of several activity choices.

One interesting takeaway from our experience was that, because MSC attracts a diverse, international crowd, many of the kids my daughter's age at the Junior Club didn't speak English. This made making friends difficult. On past cruises, she's made little buddies on board and played together with them at the kids club, but that didn't happen this time.

My son, on the other hand, only was interested in the video games and not in making friends or participating in group games, so he liked the club just fine.

TPG tip: After eight cruises with kids, I can say that, despite cruise line advertising, your child may not love the kids club for any number of reasons and choose not to go. Be prepared to be flexible with your onboard plans.

The water park was awesome, but I would have liked additional family-friendly activities

family life cruise cost

MSC Seashore has a super-fun, pirate-themed water park with waterslides and a splash area . It's got one slide that you ride in an inner tube while wearing a virtual reality headset, and you feel like you're swinging around a pirate ship dodging a giant sea monster, as well as a fast tube slide that's cantilevered off the side of the ship. The kiddie pool has spray guns, a dump bucket and baby slides, with some rope bridges above for the adventurous.

That gives the ship major points in my book.

However, on every other cruise ship I've been on with a water park, you just walk up and get in line for a slide. On MSC, I had to stand in line for 20 minutes just to sign a waiver and get bracelets for the whole family showing we were allowed to slide and that we had to wear for the rest of the cruise.

TPG tip: If you want to ride the slides (and you definitely do, kids and grown-ups both), aim to show up at the beginning of the session before the waiver line gets too long.

As for other family-friendly activities, MSC Seashore's pingpong and foosball tables were always in high demand. The ship has two regular pools welcoming kids, a sports court for basketball and other athletic competitions and an arcade with extra-fee attractions, such as virtual sports, video games and an XD cinema (where the seats move and shake, to simulate a theme park ride).

There was no miniature golf, which is a fun, free family activity found on a lot of other big ships. If there was shuffleboard on Seashore, I never found it; my kids are oddly fond of that game.

For evening entertainment, MSC had a nightly show that was a mix of singing, dancing and acrobatics that were entertaining but also unremarkable. My kids' favorite was a comedy magician who performed one afternoon.

But there were no family-friendly movies on the pool deck LED screen (just one 10:30 p.m. screening of "Wonder Woman"), no obvious activities meant for families to play together (like Carnival's "Family Feud Live") and certainly nothing like Royal Caribbean's kid-wowing high-diving or ice skating shows.

We did find and attend one event meant for the entire family — a cupcake-decorating deck party. It ended up being chaotic, with long lines for the frosting bags (which were more for decoration than for taste, as we discovered), plus a raffle for which we had no idea how to get tickets. I'd take a little more organization over poor-tasting fanciful confections any day.

If my kids didn't want to go to the kids club or get wet, it was difficult to figure out what to do with them on board. They spent a lot of time watching TV in the room, which was not my first choice for a cruise vacation.

MSC Seashore does not have cruise logistics down yet

family life cruise cost

I have never said, "No other cruise line does it like this," as much as I did on our first day on board MSC Seashore. And it wasn't a good thing.

For instance, every other line I've ever sailed asks you to attach a credit card to your cruise account before you set sail. Once you get on board, you're already set up to make purchases with your cruise card.

MSC Cruises does not have an option to add your credit card online or in the terminal before embarkation. Instead, you must stand in line to use a kiosk to fund your cruise account after you board. I didn't want to give my kids permission to spend my money on soda and arcade games, and it wasn't clear how I should set limitations at the kiosk, so I had to ask guest services to help me with the confusing credit situation. The front desk queue was so long it snaked beyond the roped-off lanes, nearly out of the atrium lobby.

The cruise industry has mostly moved to virtual muster drills; most other lines ask passengers to watch the safety instructions in their cabin or on the cruise line's app and then check in at your muster station at your leisure.

But on MSC Seashore, we had to watch a video on our TV at an appointed time, then call a specific number from our cabin phone and then proceed in groups to our muster station to get our cards scanned. At which time the entire guest capacity of the ship was in the stairwells, either going down to their muster stations or returning to their cabins. Aside from the inconvenience, it also made social distancing impossible.

When it comes to dining, most cruise lines give you the option of early, late or anytime dining. Some, like Norwegian, skip assigned dining altogether. My favorite is anytime, so I don't have to commit to a set time and can show up at the dining room when I'm hungry. On MSC, anytime dining is only an option for those who book the most expensive fare classes.

Instead, I selected early dining for my family, but it turns out there were three early dining times: 5:15, 6:15 and 7:15 p.m. You couldn't choose among those options, and we were assigned the 5:15 slot, which is unreasonably early. We managed to switch to the 6:15 time, but only after waiting in two additional lines. It would have been nice to be able to designate our specific choice during the initial booking process rather than spending even more time in a line.

And all that was just on embarkation day.

On our first port day, the shore excursions team had no idea how to handle all the people reporting to the theater at their assigned times to get group numbers for their tours. To make matters worse, rain prevented the first tours from departing on time. That led to total chaos in the theater as dozens of people were going down the aisles to present their tickets and collect their group number stickers while dozens more were pushing past to get out the bottom door to head to the gangway.

It took us half an hour to get from inside the theater to outside the ship, including a long stretch squished into a narrow, windowless hallway, barely moving.

Am I complaining too much? I know from personal experience that you'll wait in queues on all big-ship cruise lines, especially on embarkation day if you haven't pre-booked shore excursions or you want to change your dining time. I definitely experienced a terrible muster drill on one of the first sailings of Carnival Sunrise, when the crew was new and working out the passenger flow of the upgraded ship.

But on MSC Seashore — a brand-new cruise ship from a longstanding line that's been sailing from the U.S. since 2013 — the logistical snafus and numerous lines for everything from payment plans to waterslides were more frequent than I expect on your average cruise.

TPG tip: Forget spontaneity: If you want to avoid lines, book your shore excursions, beverage and dining packages and Wi-Fi plans online before your cruise. Not only can you skip lines, but you'll get a discounted rate. Or, upgrade to a room in the exclusive Yacht Club section of the ship, so you can get access to a personal concierge, who can make arrangements for you.

Bottom line

family life cruise cost

Money can't buy happiness, but it can solve many of your problems on MSC.

Book a suite in the line's ship-within-a-ship Yacht Club, and you have access to more cabin space, exclusive no-fee restaurants and designated sun decks to avoid the crowds, and a butler and concierge to take care of logistics for you. Pay for a drinks package or a fare class that includes one, and your kids get all the free ice cream they desire. Enjoy brunch or lunch at the extra-fee specialty restaurants, and you'll get variety in your lunch menu.

But doing so means your vacation is no longer a budget one, which was my main reason for choosing MSC Cruises. Once you're spending that kind of money, you could look into a costlier cruise line, such as Royal Caribbean or even Disney Cruise Line. With a larger vacation budget comes more choice, too, including a larger variety of ships, U.S. embarkation ports and cruise destinations to consider.

To me, the ship seemed better suited to couples and groups of adult friends traveling together, who are content to spend time in the pools and hot tubs, who will enjoy the onboard nightlife, who will get more value out of a drinks package and the extra-fee restaurants, and who are cruising just two to a cabin.

If you are looking for a cheap family cruise, you can certainly have a great time on MSC Cruises, but it won't be paradise. My kids had a blast; my son will tell you that he loved the video games and the waterslides, and my daughter will say she liked eating french fries and chocolate croissants in the main dining room. We all loved our time in port, river tubing in Jamaica and swimming with turtles in Grand Cayman, but we paid extra for those tours.

At the end of the day, cruising on a budget on this specific cruise line came with more logistical hassles and a lack of dining and activity choices that added stress to my vacation as the adult in charge. I put up with more queues, hassles and TV time than I prefer to on a family cruise. Had I known, perhaps I could have thrown money at the problem, but at that point, I could have a better experience for a similar price on another line.

I'd consider another cruise with MSC with my husband or a girlfriend, now that I'm savvy on how to better work the system. But I'm still on the hunt for that cheap family cruise that offers outsize value for the price. I'll let you know when I find it.

“Cruises are ideal for family vacations . For starters, they offer exceptional value, as they’re inclusive of dining, lodging, and transportation to amazing ports around the world. On top of that, many cruise lines offer both family activities and things for kids and parents to do separately — so they can have a fun vacation that suits everyone’s tastes and needs,” Colleen McDaniel, editor-in-chief at Cruise Critic , recently told Travel + Leisure .

Cruise vacation options range from small-ship expeditions to larger ships with pools , water slides, game rooms, and an array of restaurants, so the choice depends on your family’s interests and capabilities. Here are seven of the best cruise lines for families.

Staterooms are also arranged for families, with privacy curtains, abundant storage, and divided bathrooms. Families with children of all ages are welcomed and entertained with movie nights under the stars, silent disco parties, archery tournaments, cupcake decorating, laser mazes, and many other activities to share. Celebrity Cruises has created a Camp at Sea program for junior cruisers by partnering with world-renowned companies like Anturus, Xbox, Fat Brain Toys, and others to offer fun-filled, interesting activities. Art projects, cooking groups, competitions, and programs managed by counselors keep everyone engaged while they learn and have fun at sea. Teens can even enjoy spa services designed especially for them.

Family Life Cruise Discount Packages: Love Like You Mean It

If you’ve ever attended a Family Life Weekend to Remember event , then you know the impact it can have on your marriage. How would you like to expand that impact while taking a cruise vacation with your spouse???

Well, that’s exactly what the Family Life “Love Like You Mean It” Marriage Cruise is all about.

We first attended the FamilyLife Weekend to Remember event years ago in Florida after I won a contest not too long after we were married (obviously they knew we were bringing a lot of baggage into our marriage and needed some help! 😉 We were so impressed by the amount of encouragement, inspiration and even challenge we received that we’ve been volunteering with them ever since.

Now if you know me at all or have read some of the marriage struggles we’ve been through, it may surprise you to hear that my husband and I are planning to go on this FamilyLife Cruise together. But that is EXACTLY why we need to be on this cruise!!!

Nowhere in the Bible does it say that marriage would be easy, but I believe in God’s covenant and the covenant of marriage. And while it may not be easy, I guarantee it is worthwhile!

In fact, I’m proud to say that my husband and I reached our 16th anniversary this past August and while we both have issues to work through (notice I said ‘we’ not just ‘he’), the important thing is that we are working on them and moving forward TOGETHER.

FamilyLife Marriage Events

The FamilyLife Weekend to Remember is still the best conference we’ve found and the FamilyLife Cruise goes even beyond that! It’s truly hard to believe the restoration and transformation (not to mention relaxation) that takes place in those 7 days at sea.

I’ve been volunteering with FamilyLife ever since our first Weekend to Remember to help encourage others to experience this life-changing event.

What to Expect with the FamilyLife Love Like You Mean It Marriage Cruise

I know the cost can be prohibitive to many couples, so you know I wouldn’t tell you about this if I didn’t have an AMAZING deal to offer you as well. But first, let me tell you more about this year’s FamilyLife Love Like You Mean It Marriage Cruise :

How Much Does a Family Cruise Cost?

[fa icon="calendar"] Dec 4, 2012 11:31:00 AM / by Sally Black

Sally Black

Editor's note - This post was updated May 2018 and has been updated for accuracy and comprehensiveness.

Family cruises are a great value for a family vacation.  If you're trying to plan a family cruise vacation, cost and budgets are top considerations for most parents.

If you're new to family cruises, how do you know how they will cost for your family and how much to budget for such a trip?

Cruise prices start at average cost of $79 per person per day. Remember cruise ships charge by the number of passengers sharing the same cabin. This is an AVERAGE price based on four family members sharing an inside cabin on a Carnival ship sailing to the Caribbean.

This $79 per person/per day price includes your inside cabin (meaning a cabin with no windows), All of your meals and snacks, regular coffee, tea, ice tea, lemonade, taxes and port charges. It also includes many ship board activities, nightly entertainment and daytime child care for ages 2 thru teens.   So to expand on this math a bit...for a family of four it would cost @ $316 per day.  You can expect a 3 day Caribbean sailing to cost this family of four roughly $948. An entire week at sea would have a price tag of about $2212.

Have we got your attention?

When you look at the idea of $2212 for four people to enjoy a week in the Caribbean - room, food, activities, a family cruise is a great bargain! Many folks don't realize how affordable family cruises can be.

Factors that influence the price of your family cruise:

1) cruise lines and ships   .

Again, we based this price on a family of four aboard a Carnival Cruise Line. Carnival is one of the largest Cruise lines and their volume translates into great values for families. Royal Caribbean and Norwegian are the next lines as far as family popularity and options for kids. Disney is considered a favorite for families but it is considered a premium cruise line. This means families can expect to pay almost three times as much for a Disney cruise and they would for Carnival. If you're looking to keep your price tag low, bear in mind the newer the ship the more in demand it will be and the price to sail on it will also be higher. The newer ships offer more ship board amenities and those translate into higher price tags.

2)  Destinations

Some destinations like Alaska come with higher price tags starting at around $100 per person per night. This is because this destination is in high demand and there is a short summer sailing season. The Caribbean offers shorter 3 night sailings all year round but depending on your departure city, if you need to add flights to get to port that will add to your vacation budget.

3) Timing

As with all family vacations, prices for family cruises are based on supply and demand. Popular family vacation weeks like the December holidays and spring break often come with the highest price tags. If you can vary your sail dates, sometimes by just a couple of days, you'll find extra savings. If you're kids are little or your family is not tied to a school calendar then you will reap big rewards by sailing some of the off season dates like early Sept or Dec.

4)  Departure Ports

When budgeting the cost of family cruises, parents need to factor in their travel costs to get everybody to their departure port in order to sail on their family cruise.  It's generally cheaper for four people to drive to port than it is to fly, especially if your traveling less than 400 miles. Bear in mind parking your car at the cruise ship terminal can run about $30 per day.

If you're flying then airfare will need to be calculated into your overall budget. Hopefully you can use loyalty or credit card points to help with these costs for your family. If you do fly, you'll need to factor in airport to pier transfers. This can be a little as a $25 roundtrip cab fare in a port like Fort Lauderdale or $50 per person each way from say Orlando airport to Port Canaveral.

5) Pre Cruise Stay

Our Travel Agents at Vacationkids HIGHLY recommend that families arrive in port at least one day prior to sailing. Remember...ships wait for NO one! If you experience any traffic or flight delays and arrive late to port, you're simply out of luck. You will forfeit the entire cost of your cruise.  Who wants to start their family vacation under that kind of stress? Vacationkids offers many park & stay or fly & stay packages at local port hotels that include a room for your family the night before your cruise in addition to free parking for the week or transportation to pier. Many of these options cost around $250 for a family of four. These affordable options can really cut down on stress and agnst making them worth the few extra pennies.

Cabin upgrades - $59 per person per night is based on an inside cabin for four people without any windows. If you choose to upgrade to an ocean view cabin with a window, figure on an additional $30-$50 per person to stay in that type of cabin. A balcony cabin will cost an additional $125-$175 per person. Suites start around $300 per person per night and their prices climb with added amenities like hot tubs, butlers and even baby grand pianos.

Tips - Just about everyone on board from housekeeping, to kids club staff to your waiters will expect a tip.  The cruise lines make it very easy for passengers to pay gratuities. Most cruise lines charge between $12-$15 per day for "gratuities" or tips. Children are expected to pay tips too because they too receive the care an attention of the crew.  Gratuities can be added into the total cost of your family cruise right from the beginning. If not, it will be charged to your ship board account before you leave.

Soda & Drinks -Alcoholic beverages, soda and bottled water are not included. Passengers must pay extra for any or all of these beverages. The cruise lines do offer Soda cards for both adults and kids. The average cost is $5-$7 per person per day and they definitely are worth it if your family members plan to drink one or more sodas per day.  Open bar alcohol packages are offered on board. Full packages start at around $50 per person/per day. Just know there is an additional 15% bar gratuity added to the total amount. Some cruise lines will offer drink packages as a perk or limited sale option. Just know if you select that option for free, there will still be a 15% gratuity charge.

Activities - Many activities on board your cruise are free but there are charges for some activities. For example, using the on board fitness center is free but taking a spinning or yoga class may have a $16 price tag. Daily kids clubs are free but evening babysitting starts at $7 per hour with a 15% gratuity. Most activity prices are clearly marked but if you're ever in doubt, just ask.

Sightseeing - Every time your cruise ship docks in another port, passengers can take local sightseeing excursions or experience different local activities. These activities can range from a round of golf to scuba diving to dog sledding to helicopter tours. They can last for a couple hours to the entire day complete with meals and transportation.  The average cost for some of the more average sightseeing options is about $100 per person per excursion but with longer or more exotic experiences prices can run several hundred dollars. If your ship is stopping at 3 or 4 ports of call, these excursion prices can add up very quickly. Remember guests are free to stay aboard the ship and enjoy all of the ship board activities. Often there are great deals for things like spa treatments on port days when most folks are off the ship.

Anduril Introduces Barracuda-M That Aims To Disrupt The Cruise Missile Market

Defense contractor Anduril has unveiled Barracuda, a new family of what it is calling “expendable autonomous air vehicles” that are scalable, highly modular, and already being flight-tested. The company is heavily focused now on “M” versions configured as relatively low-cost air-breathing precision munitions that could be launched from helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, as well as maritime and ground platforms. A Barracuda type is one of the designs the Pentagon’s Defense Innovation Unit is looking at in its Enterprise Test Vehicle effort , which reflects particularly growing interest within the U.S. military in cheaper and more readily producible cruise missiles and other types of stand-off munitions .

The Barracuda family as it exists now consists of three different core vehicles, the Barracuda-100, Barracuda-250, and Barracuda-500. An “M” configuration is available for each one.

Each tier of Barracuda has roughly the same general layout, with a pair of pop-out wings in the center and folding tail fins at the rear. Conformal intakes built into the bodies of the vehicles feed into their air-breath propulsion systems. Anduril says the top speed of all three existing Barracuda designs, which are powered by small turbojets, is “up to 500 knots” depending on the mode of launch and other factors.

There is a set of core subsystems that are common across all Barracuda types, but they are otherwise intended to be readily reconfigurable. The vehicles are also all designed with an eye toward using “commercially-derived and widely-available components” to help reduce costs and enable the ramping up of production.

The Barracuda-100, the smallest and shortest-ranged version, has a 35-pound payload capacity and projected maximum range of 60 and 85 nautical miles when launched from the surface and the air, respectively, according to Anduril. The company says that this version could be well suited for launch from attack helicopters like the AH-1Z Viper and AH-64 Apache , as well as from Common Launch Tube (CLT) and similar launchers mounted on the rear cargo ramps of AC-130s and other platforms, including ones on the ground .

Interestingly, Anduril released an image of an example of a Barracuda-100, seen below, which shows it sporting a connector ‘shoe’ that is very similar to the ones found on AGM-114 Hellfire missiles and AGM-179 Joint Air-to-Ground Missiles (JAGM). For the AGM-114 and AGM-179, the connector provides an interface between the missiles and standard rail-type launchers used on AH-1s, AH-64s, and other helicopters, as well as a host of other platforms, including MQ-9 Reaper drones and AC-130J Ghostrider gunships . The Barracuda-100 is also depicted sitting in front of an AH-1 helicopter and looks to feature some kind of electro-optical, infrared, and/or laser seeker in the nose.

The Barracuda-250 has the same payload capacity as the Barracuda-100, but with a greater expected range – up to 150 and 200 nautical miles for surface and air launch, respectively. Anduril is pitching the 250 version primarily as a potential air-launched store for tactical combat jets and bombers, including as something that could fit inside the bays of stealth fighters like the F-35. The company says it is also something that could possibly be fired from Multiple Launch Rocket System (MLRS) and High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) vehicles on the ground or ships at sea.

Barracuda-500 has a significantly greater payload capacity of up to 100 pounds and is envisioned, at least currently, exclusively for air-launched applications with a maximum range of up to 500 miles. In addition to being employed by combat aircraft, Anduril says that this version could be suitable for use from cargo aircraft via a palletized launch method. The U.S. Air Force is currently developing a palletized launch system like this called Rapid Dragon .

The entire Barracuda-M line is intended to be usable against an array of targets on land and at sea. The company says it is still refining what guidance options it might employ to prosecute those different target sets, which will include ones that are static and moving.

As already noted, Barracuda is one of four designs the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) selected to take part in its Enterprise Test Vehicle (ETV) effort. DIU is conducting ETV in cooperation with the U.S. Air Force, which sees the designs as stepping stones to a new lower-cost cruise missile. The missile offshoot of ETV is also known as “Franklin,” reportedly a reference to the late singer Aretha Franklin and, specifically, her famous song “Respect.”

However, ETV and Franklin are just two examples of a recent explosion of interest within the U.S. military in new relatively cheap air and surface-launched stand-off munitions the production of which could also be ramped up relatively quickly. American military planners increasingly see lower-cost stand-off weapons as not only valuable, but essential for fighting and winning future wars. U.S. forces would be called upon to prosecute tens of thousands of targets in the opening stages of any high-end fight, especially one in the Pacific against China, and there would be a substantial continued need for munitions if such a conflict were to drag out. Replenishing stockpiles of expended munitions would be critical regardless in order to ensure preparedness for other contingencies. In addition, while lower-cost munitions might also be less capable, they could be used against appropriate target sets to help ensure more capable weapons are available for use in contexts that demand their employment.

“You’re all familiar with the war games, where, you know, the United States and our allies run out of critical munitions in the first week or two of the conflict, and then we struggle, or theoretically would struggle, for a period of years, to replenish all the weapons that we extended,” Chris Brose, Anduril’s Chief Strategy Officer told The War Zone and other outlets. “And I think Ukraine has put that problem in high relief for the past few years on far simpler tactical weapon systems, to say nothing of the larger critical munitions that are going to be so central for an INDOPACOM [U.S. Indo-Pacific Command] scenario.”

Many U.S. allies and partners are taking a similar view, underscored by lessons being drawn from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. It emerged earlier this year, that the U.S. Air Force’s Extended Range Attack Munition (ERAM) effort is focused primarily on acquiring a lower-cost stand-off aerial strike capability for the Ukrainian Air Force. The U.S. Navy has a similar focus on helping friendly foreign countries acquire new maritime stand-off strike options with what it is calling Coalition Affordable Maritime Strike (CAMS).

Anduril would not name any other programs beyond ETV and Franklin in which Barracuda M versions may be involved, but acknowledged the clear and growing interest on the U.S. side, as well as among potential foreign customers, in munitions of this kind.

“There are other places where Barracuda is making progress” and “we’re seeing a lot of interest from allies and partners,” according to Brose.

Barracudas could also be configured in other ways besides munitions. As The War Zone has noted in the past , there is already an increasingly blurry line between cruise missiles, decoys with electronic warfare payloads , and longer-range kamikaze drones .

“People… were thinking about how we do a better job of applying digital engineering and said you know, ‘if we built a software programmable, modular, but recoverable air vehicle that looks a lot like a missile and flies over most of the missile envelope that could greatly accelerate how we do test[ing],” Tim Grayson, Special Assistant to Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall, said during a talk the Air & Space Force Asscoation’s Mitchell Institute hosted in July. “And it was sort of like chocolate and peanut butter coming together. …this modular thing for testing purposes, it’s very adaptable, one of the modules is a warhead, sure looks like a low-cost cruise missile.”

Grayson said at the time the Air Force was referring to the concept he described as the Affordable Mass Munition, which is very much in line with the thinking underpinning both DIU’s ETV effort and Anduril’s Barracuda.

Anduril has itself highlighted the potential for Barracudas to work collaboratively in groups using the company’s propriety Lattice artificial intelligence-enabled autonomy software package , third-party systems, or a mixture of both.

“Undergirding all of what exists inside of Barracuda is the Lattice operating system and the high levels of mission autonomy that that brings. So when we talk about barracuda, and this is kind of inherent in the name, right? It is, it is a capability that is designed to be deployed in groups, you know, to hunt and effect in teams,” Brose explained. “You can, obviously, you know, deliver those effects through a single air vehicle, but the real value of the capability, which is realized both in the high levels of autonomy and the low levels of cost, is the ability to actually deploy these as teams, to go out and do collaborative engagement.”

“There was the question about survivability, countermeasures, and I think… we’re trying to think about this problem differently,” he continued. “You don’t necessarily have to bundle every single piece of capability into a single round or air vehicle. You can also envision how working as a team, multiple air vehicles are capable of collaborating, providing different capabilities, whether it’s target detection, whether it’s decoying or countermeasures, whether it’s strike, so that that package can go deliver the mission effect that you want, without, again, having to bundle all of that into one air vehicle and then radically, drive up the cost per round of every single vehicle.”

What Brose is describing here is an inherent capability offered by fully networked swarms of systems acting as a unified whole. Networked munitions that can work together collaboratively is something the U.S. military has a stated interest in with the U.S. Air Force’s Golden Horde project being a prime example.

The entire Barracuda family and the core design of the vehicles highlight Anduril’s broader vision for disrupting typical development, production, and supply chains, as well as exportability, when it comes to defense programs. The animated promotional video for Barracuda, seen at the top of this story, underscores the company’s consistent push to set itself apart from traditional defense contractors. Founded in 2017, it is still a relative newcomer in the industry, but has been steadily securing more major contracts from the U.S. military and foreign armed forces . It is also been working to significantly grow its own organic production capacity, including a planned “hyperscale” factory in the United States announced earlier this year.

What Anduril is looking to do with Barracuda “is the opposite of what you see in our traditional weapons sector, which are exquisite systems that are incredibly hard to produce, that are limited in their scalability across those programs by highly specialized labor, overly defense-specific supply chains, very complex, bespoke, manual defense-unique manufacturing processes, exquisite materials and the like, such that these systems become incredibly difficult and all but impossible to really produce in the volumes that our operational leaders are saying they’re going to need, which is like a 10x increase in weapons production,” Anduril Brose explained. “These are systems that can be assembled with tools, literally, that you probably have in your garage – screwdrivers, pliers, things of that sort. So it is not gated in terms of its producibility on highly specialized tooling, highly specialized manufacturing processes, highly specialized labor, none of which we’re ever going to have enough of.”

A key aspect of the underlying approach is “I have to leverage commercial supply chains as much as possible. I have to make the weapon as simple to produce and as simple to assemble as possible, so that the broadest possible labor tool can be brought to bear, to scale production,” he continued. “So the ability to tap into commercial automotive… labor pools and related sources of workforce, is how we’re thinking about this system, not just so you can build it in large numbers at low prices to begin with, but if, God forbid, we find ourselves in another protracted conflict where we have to keep that rate manufacturing high over a prolonged period of time, we’re capable of doing that.”

In addition, “you can take it apart like Lego blocks, and it makes it a lot easier to kind of work through and navigate, you know, kind of defense export issues and collaboration with allies,” Brose added.

“A lot of that is keeping it simple. Don’t reduce the number of parts that you need to use. Rely more on commercial components. Reduce the tooling and the complexity of manufacturing. This makes it much more producible, and allows us to kind of rely on infrastructure and manufacturing capabilities and labor forces that isn’t, again, bespoke to just one single system,” Diem Salmon, Vice President of Air Dominance and Strike at Anduril, also told The War Zone and other outlets while speaking alongside Brose. “This also significantly brings the cost down. So less touch labor, etc, if you’re down to, you know, a handful of common tools, rather than having unique tool sets for every single variant of weapon that you’re developing.”

Whether Anduril will be able to make good on its broader vision, through Barracuda or any of the rest of its steadily growing portfolio, remains to be seen. The company has somewhat nebulously said “a single Barracuda takes 50 percent less time to produce, requires 95 percent fewer tools, and 50 percent fewer parts than competing solutions on the market today” and that “the Barracuda family … is 30 percent cheaper on average than other solutions, enabling affordable mass and cost-effective, large-scale employment,” but has so far not provided a direct 1:1 comparison with an existing system. A statement like “30 percent cheaper on average” presents a very broad potential cost range when talking about a multi-tier family of readily reconfigurable systems. Existing in the same general classes can have different price points, as well. For instance, the unit cost of a current-generation AGM-114 Hellfires is around $210,000 to $215,000, while that of a newer AGM-179A JAGM is in the $300,000 to $330,000 range, according to U.S. Army budget documents . A munition in either of those price ranges is much cheaper than something like an AGM-158 Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missiles (JASSM) with a unit cost of more than a million dollars.

At the same time, U.S. military officials have been increasingly public about their view that there is a need for expansion in the U.S. defense industrial base and that smaller or otherwise non-traditional companies will play important roles in doing that going forward.

ETV, specifically, presents a path “to expand our industrial base into non-traditional suppliers that perhaps have not historically been large-scale munitions producers,” Vice Chief of Staff of the U.S. Air Force Gen. James Slife said back in July . “If the manufacturing techniques we’re able to leverage pan out we’ll be able to take advantage of a bigger part of the American industrial base to produce munitions for us.”

With this in mind, Anduril faces already stiff and still growing competition when it comes to products like Barracuda. In August, Y Combinator , a powerful Silicon Valley technology incubator, announced it was backing a startup aiming to produce lower-cost cruise missiles in its first-ever foray into the defense sector.

If nothing else, the public debut of the Barracuda family is the latest evidence of bigger trends in the U.S. defense industry that could have ramifications well beyond work on new and cheaper precision munitions.

Anduril Introduces Barracuda-M Family of Low-Cost Cruise Missiles

Photo of Joe Saballa

Anduril Industries has unveiled an innovative family of cruise missiles that reportedly requires fewer than 10 tools to assemble and is 30 percent cheaper than comparable weapons.

Called the Barracuda-M, the low-cost munition is designed to provide warfighters with an adaptable and upgradable capability to address both current and emerging threats.

It is equipped with a guidance system to accurately neutralize static or moving targets through body-to-body contact, supporting direct, stand-in, or stand-off strike missions.

It can be launched from a variety of ground, air, and land platforms, including the latest fighter jets, helicopters, surface vessels, and drones.

The weapon also features a range of common subsystems to ensure it can be rapidly optimized to meet evolving needs.

The Barracuda-M comes in three variants: Barracuda-100, Barracuda-250, and Barracuda-500 – each offering unique capabilities.

The Barracuda-100 is the smallest and shortest-ranged version, with a maximum payload capacity of 35 pounds (156.8 kilograms) and an operational range of up to 85 nautical miles (157 kilometers) when launched from the air.

The Barracuda-250 offers the same payload capacity, but has a greater strike range of 200 nautical miles (370 kilometers).

Anduril said this version is well-suited for combat jets and bomber aircraft, as well as for High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers.

The Barracuda-500, meanwhile, boasts a superior payload capacity of 100 pounds (45 kilograms) and a range not exceeding 500 miles (800 kilometers).

Supports Hyper-Scale Production

According to the manufacturer, the Barracuda-M is the “most producible cruise missile” on the market, as a single munition takes 50 percent less time to produce.

It also requires 50 percent fewer parts, enabling affordable, large-scale production.

“Barracuda is purpose-built to bring mass to the fight,” Anduril stated. “Barracuda production rates are designed to keep pace with the threat and can be doubled on-call to meet short-term surges in demand.”
