Hazard: The Journey of Life
Hazard: The Journey of Life was the original name for Antichamber when it was in the alpha testing stages. Hazard was an Unreal Tournament 3 (UT3) mod. The gun model was completely different, as pictured in one of the Dev Rooms of Antichamber; this gun was a washed out version of the Link Gun from UT3. Many of the puzzles changed between Hazard and Antichamber, although most of these changes included additions and simplifications. Overall, the map was mostly the same with a few less rooms as well as different puzzles because of the limitations of a UT3 mod. This version of the game is no longer obtainable except for one or two obscure mirrors. Originally, the mod was available from Alexander Bruce's former website, http://demruth.com (now unavailable), which used to redirect to http://antichamber-game.com for a period of time after the full release.
Luckily, the 2010 demo and the final UT3 mod release were saved to archive.org. However the 2nd September 2009 UT3 Mod was not so I had to find it after some digging on the internet.

Hazard: The Journey of Life
Hazard: The Journey of Life is a dreamlike new game that takes you on a journey through life. It’s a first person game where you don’t fire any guns or even have any enemies. Instead, it focuses on taking you to a trip down the many facets and complexities of life. The game was among the Grand Prize Winner in the Make Something Unreal as well as awarded Best Game in Game Connect Asia Pacific.
The game features a unique and mindblowing graphic design that places a visual form in the abstract concepts of life. It’s an interesting 3D adventure game that requires patience and an open mind in trying to figure out what life wants you to do. Definitely a must-try if you are into challenging experimental games. When playing Hazard, be prepared to encounter a smorgasboard of vibrant colors and phantasmagoric images. The game is defined by its bold and futuristic graphics that lurk at almost every corner.
You won’t find any enemies or anything to shoot in this game. You’ll be dabbling instead in trying to figure out various puzzles you encounter. These are often related to things concerning life. Moreover, just like in real life, nothing is ever as it seems. The world is ever changing; one minute you are staring at a boxed space while in another you are staring at a colorful void.
When starting out, you first begin inside the HoloChamber, which serves as your anchor point throughout the game. It’s possible to teleport to any other room from here by simply pressing the ESC key. A map will be provided; showing you the places or rooms you have already explored. As you discover this world, you will encounter messages and clues plastered on walls. There’s really no direct storyline for the game. It’s main aim, instead, is simply to get you to ask the questions yourself and possibly provide answers.
Overall, the game is an entirely new experience. If you are up for a challenge, then give this one a go. Although it’s a bit tedious to download the game, (you need the Unreal Tournament 3 and the 2.0 patch installed first) before it will run. It’s definitely worth the trouble.

Antichamber.
In all, there are no words that can adequately explain the experience of playing Antichamber. You simply need to play it for yourself to fully understand it. The game is extremely hard and dizzily frustrating. Yet, once you grasp the game's odd sense of logics, you will find the game to be a sandbox for creativity and lateral thinking. Antichamber is like no other games that you have played. It is among the most original and inventive games ever created in indie game development scene.

Gameplay [ ]

- The game is made with the Unreal Development Kit and is an unusual entrant into the Make Something Unreal competition. It was won a couple of prizes in that competition, making Alexander not have to worry about money as much.
- This game is best experienced when bruced out.

A first-person philosophical puzzle
Hazard - The Journey Of Life is a first-person game with no shooting! There is also no one to kill, making this a really unusual 3D adventure!
Hazard - The Journey Of Life is presented in really bold, smooth graphics which are not realistic, but very futuristic looking. It's like an even more stylized version of Valve's Portal , and the strange, tense atmosphere is also similar. However, in Hazard - The Journey Of Life, there doesn't seem to be an evil robot controlling your progress, even if the puzzles are difficult.
Messages, sometimes with clues, are posted on walls as you move around and you have a base from where you can access all the areas you have discovered. There's no explicit story or point to the game, beyond the philosophical questions it asks you along the way.
This approach is the main strength and weakness of Hazard - The Journey Of Life. Not everyone will be able to work out the puzzles from their clues, because they require a certain way of thinking. If you're stuck, there's nothing you can do. The use of mainly white corridors sometimes makes it difficult to remember where you are in the game, even if you can return to the main hall and see the map whenever you like!
If you'd like a new 3D gaming experience, Hazard - The Journey Of Life is pretty different and will challenge your puzzle as well as your action skills.
- Simple controls
- Unusual concept
- Genuine puzzles
- Some puzzles are frustrating
- No help when you get stuck

Indie game 'Hazard: The Journey of Life' is now Antichamber
Hazard: The Journey of Life , by Alexander Bruce, is a super-abstract first-person exploration game, whose rules seem to constantly change. For example, a door might not lead to the same place twice, and a wall might be a door depending on how you look at it. And now, even the name has shifted -- to Antichamber , in advance of its commercial release ("when it's done"). Speaking to Joystiq, Bruce explained the motivations behind the midstream re-christening, by way of explaining the evolution of the name and the game. "Hazard' was chosen back when I was first exploring the geometry system," he said, "and the game was all about killing players in an arena combat game, but eventually that idea died off, and I just kept calling anything related to the geometry system 'Hazard' because I was used to it." He began adding "philosophical" themes "about choices and metaphor" in 2009, at which point the "Journey of Life" subtitle came in. Now, he explained, the game is less about philosophy and more about "non-Euclidean space, non-physical geometry and massively toying with expectations in a meaningful way." Antichamber covers those angles better than Hazard did. "The game speaks for itself, so the name change is really just bringing it up to date with everything else that has changed."

Former NFL player Steve Gleason gets candid about ALS journey: "This body may be a prison but my mind is free"
By David Begnaud , Jennifer Earl
Updated on: September 16, 2024 / 3:46 PM EDT / CBS News
Steve Gleason helped lift the spirit of New Orleans with his iconic punt block during the Saints' first home game after Hurricane Katrina in 2006 – two years before he retired from the NFL.
In 2011, the former New Orleans Saints safety was diagnosed with ALS. He believes that block, which he has called one of his proudest moments, saved his life.
"In 2006, when I blocked that punt on Monday night football, it was undoubtedly a phenomenon that was much more important than winning a football game," Gleason said in an interview that aired Monday on "CBS Mornings."
Creating "Team Gleason"
Shortly after his diagnosis, Gleason and his wife Michel made it their mission to help empower others with ALS and raise awareness for the disease, creating the Team Gleason Foundation . The foundation has provided over $40 million in technology, equipment and care services to people with ALS.
"So many people have told us that our foundation's efforts and support have saved their lives. But if I didn't block that punt, I'm just another has-been football player. It's probably that I'd just fade away and die anonymously. I don't see any of this happening," Gleason said.
In a recent text conversation with his friend Brian Jeansonne, a former pastor from New Orleans who was diagnosed with ALS in 2020, Gleason was asked if he believes he'd have the same range and impact on ALS without that legendary 2006 block.
"My answer was, 'If I don't block the punt, I'm probably not alive," Gleason said.
He added, "But here we are. I did block the punt…and this community, my family and friends and their love continue to uplift me throughout this crazy wonderful journey with ALS."
Because of his heart and strength, Gleason was honored with the Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2024 ESPYS.
"Steve Gleason has always been determined to write his own story and live to be 109. Through it all, he has never given in, never stopped fighting, No white flags. And never stopped finding ways to inspire, impact, and write his own story," former Saints quarterback Drew Brees said at the 2024 ESPYs when introducing Gleason.
Living with ALS
When Gleason was diagnosed with ALS, he admits he had to tackle a wide range of emotions – going from frustrated to fearful, to angry. Gleason and Michel shared candid details about their journey with ALS in a new memoir, "A Life Impossible: Living with ALS: Finding Peace and Wisdom Within a Fragile Existence," co-written with Jeff Duncan.
"The readers will see that 13 years of living with this gnarly disease and I'm over a decade past my expiration date, so I have the wilderness of fear tattooed all over me," Gleason said.
Through the process of losing muscle control, Gleason said he held on to the one thing he has control over: his mindset.
"This body may be a prison but my mind is free," Gleason said.
Michel admits she's still tackling feelings of anger and frustration.
"I have not transcended it all like Steve has. But also [I'm] able to move and talk and feel. I'm proud of him for where he is because I really can't imagine…having to do what he does every day," she said.
Gleason uses a special computer equipped with eye-tracking software to communicate daily. But the technology isn't always perfect.
"His technology doesn't always work. His eyes get tired and some days I just want to be like I just wish today we could have like a regular conversation to figure out the next week," Michel said.
Sometimes, Michel said, it's hard for Gleason to communicate with his 5-year-old daughter Gray and 12-year-old son Rivers.
"It's painful to watch, because I know how much he wants to be communicating with them," she said.
"We all have a timeline"
Gleason believes "we all have a timeline," and he finds that concept "absolutely beautiful."
His advice to others: live like today is the last day you'll be able to move, talk and breathe on your own.
If you start to shift your mindset, Gleason said, your perspective will change.
"Will you be more appreciative and less concerned about achievement or material success knowing this is your last day of moving?" he asked. "When you hug your child or run your hand through their hair, knowing this is the last time, how much will you appreciate the preciousness of that moment?"
"Mic drop," agreed Michel before giving him a "forehead to forehead" hug.

Pepe Aguilar on life’s cosmic lessons and the new sound he’s rocking
- Copy Link URL Copied!
It makes perfect sense that veteran Mexican singer Pepe Aguilar would release the most thoughtful and ambitious album of his career during a tumultuous time in his life. Art has the capricious tendency to thrive on conflict and uncertainty.
“It’s the one album that best defines my personality,” Aguilar says over Zoom about “Que Llueva Tequila,” an elegant, mournful collection of música mexicana love songs punctuated by deep — and almost experimental — rock ’n’ roll undertones. Released earlier this summer, it was met with critical acclaim, but the numbers on streaming platforms have been tepid.
“This is the first time that I delve into elements of rock and psychedelia that don’t normally show up in mariachi music,” he explains. “I owed this record to myself, and I’m happy with the end product. But I’m not naive. I knew that streaming services wouldn’t exactly be jumping at the chance to add these songs to their playlists,” he adds with a hearty laugh, punctuated with a tinge of cynicism.
At 56, Aguilar stands as one of the most respected maestros in contemporary Mexican music. The son of late golden era icons Antonio Aguilar and actress Flor Silvestre , he is part of a singing dynasty that now includes his daughter Ángela , 20, and son Leonardo, 25. Pepe and his children recently appeared together on the Jaripeo Sin Fronteras tour — a traditional cross between concert and equestrian spectacle.
“Working with Pepe on his ‘MTV Unplugged’ was one of the most enriching moments of my career,” says acclaimed singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade . “From the very first moment I was impressed not only by his amazing talent as an artist, but also by his deep humanity and sensitivity. Pepe is not only an icon of regional Mexican music, but also a bridge that brings different generations together. I feel grateful for having been part of his musical history — his passion for life continues to inspire us all.”
For Natalia Lafourcade, playing the Hollywood Bowl again is the next step in her storied journey
Over the last two decades, Mexican singer-songwriter Natalia Lafourcade has established herself as one of the most revered and celebrated artists from Latin America. This week, she’ll be performing two shows at the Hollywood Bowl.
Sept. 3, 2024
In the ‘90s, after an ill-fated venture into rock with the band Equs, Aguilar set his eyes on música mexicana and made a name for himself as a brash innovator. On albums like the now classic “Por Una Mujer Bonita,” he opened new avenues by introducing unusual instrumental combinations. As a producer, he anchored the songs on arrangements so precious and velvety, they sounded as if they were meant to be framed at a museum. Aguilar also became a huge concert attraction across the Americas with a gentlemanly vocal style that harks back to 20th century Mexico — an intoxicating blend of jubilant ranchera and misty bolero pathos.
But everything changes in the fickle world of pop music. Last year, Aguilar was involved in a brief, viral Twitter spat with rising star Natanael Cano over his distaste for the raw new wave of corridos tumbados. His daughter Ángela has been in the public eye due to her recent marriage to controversial singer Christian Nodal . And after years in Los Angeles, the Aguilar family moved to Houston in the state where he was born.
“It was a sudden change, but a necessary one,” he says. “We were a bit tired of the cold Los Angeles energy. We pined for something different. I never imagined I would feel so comfortable here. We’re happy for now, but we may return to L.A. in the future.”
In many ways, “Que Llueva Tequila” is Aguilar’s emotional reaction to everything that has been happening around him.
“This is probably the seventh or eighth time that I completely reinvent myself,” he says. “It’s a new dawn; a new way of doing things.”
Like the venerable classic rock aura from which it draws, “Que Llueva Tequila” demands patient listening. “Corazón a Medio Día” begins with the safety of a sweet accordion line, but there are some Pink Floyd-like electric guitars buried in the song’s seraphic outro. And the arena-rock mood that kicks off “Hasta Que Me Duermo” becomes downright symphonic when Aguilar belts out the massive chorus about obsessive heartbreak — a moment that can best be described as progressive ranchera. Some of the songs were written by longtime collaborator Enrique Guzmán Yáñez. Others are by Pablo Preciado, the singer-songwriter with Mexican pop group Matisse.
“Maybe I’m being conceited, but I believe we may have stumbled into a new sound,” he enthuses. “The music business is nothing but a game focused on making money and following what everybody else is doing, and many experimental records never make it to the mainstream. But now that anything goes — now that you can include the most vulgar expressions imaginable in a song — why not see what happens with these new sonic possibilities.”
Clearly, Aguilar is taking an aim at the unapologetic irreverence of corridos tumbados , their tall tales of sexual prowess and recreational drugs. He laughs when I confess that I enjoy the coarse new sound of música mexicana.
“I don’t feel the inclination to include profanity in my songs, or sing praise to the convoys of drug dealers parading themselves in the streets,” he says. “I don’t see myself starring in a musical either, because I don’t like musicals. This doesn’t mean that I’m weird or overtly critical. The good thing about all this artistic liberation is that Mexican artists are now part of the global landscape. Suddenly, the gates are wide open for all of us.”
Latinx Files: ‘Going Varsity in Mariachi’ is the narrative the border deserves
‘Going Varsity in Mariachi,’ the endearing documentary about the world of competitive high school mariachi in Texas, is finally available on streaming.
Sept. 6, 2024
In a peripheral way, Aguilar’s children are also part of the new wave — at least generationally. As the father of adult kids, he is wise enough to distance himself from the toxic labyrinth of tabloid flashes and social media venom.
“We all come to this world to learn some lessons, and the studies program is tailored to each unique individual,” he reflects. “We’re just a little piece in a huge cosmic puzzle. At 56, I can tell you that my kids are now adults, responsible for their choices and the consequences of those choices. Our work as parents is already done — we become observers. Of course you suffer for them, but you have to get rid of your own paradigm of how things are supposed to be. Coming to terms with this has been difficult, but also liberating.”
These existential musings may account for the gauzy, melancholy mood that informs the songs of “Que Llueva Tequila” — a prism that adds poignancy to his singing.
“Music functions like an escape valve,” he says. “Not to place myself in the role of a victim — qué flojera — but I tend to focus on the unfairness of life and its profound sorrow, and there is definitely a lot of that going around, my brother.
