How to Make a Travel Scrapbook

If you don’t like to write, draw or paint you might think that my guide to how to make a travel journal won’t work for you, but without those skills, you can still create an amazing record of your travel memories by creating a travel scrapbook. In this post, I share my best tips for making a simple, easy-to-make travel scrapbook that uses photos and other materials to create a scrapbook you’ll return to again and again to remember your trip vividly.

Making a Travel Scrapbook

A written record paired with handmade illustrations is an amazing travel record- but not the only way to create an artistic/tactile memory of your trip. One way to make a travel journal if you don’t want to draw, sketch, or paint is to make an art journal scrapbook of your trip. This scrapbook can use what’s called “ephemera” to create an artistic travel journal effect without requiring artistic skills.

Ephemera is a word that refers to “collectible memorabilia, typically written or printed, that was originally intended to have only short-term usefulness.” For travelers, this category includes tickets, business cards, cut-outs from hotel’s travel magazines and tour attraction brochures, and so much more.

Items like that canceled entry ticket from the museum you had dreamed of visiting, or the business card from a special restaurant you ate at on the last night of your trip make great additions, not just for visual interest but for creating a record of the experience. These papers can help enhance a travel journal by filling a page and reminding you of the unique experiences from your trip. You can add these items in a style that’s technical, scientific, and carefully-arranged, or this addition can be done in a way to make a cute, playful, travel scrapbook.

• PACK TO SCRAPBOOK:  When you build your travel journal kit, be sure to pack a glue pen (so much fun to use, it’s literally a fine tip pen with glue for ink!), Sharp detail scissors with blades under 4″ from point to pivot (So TSA won’t swipe them), and a broad-tip glue pen (for covering larger areas). A small coupon organizer can be helpful for organizing cut-outs and preventing them from bending in your luggage before being added to your journal.
• FIND MATERIALS AS YOU GO . Free promotional materials are available at just about every hotel, restaurant, and tourist attraction. Keep your eye out for good additions and get creative with cutouts or even adding natural elements like leaves or pressed flowers. (TIP: the space between the back of your phone and your phone case is a great on-the-go spot to press a leaf or flower for later addition to your journal)
• ADD YOURSELF . Anyone can cut out and paste materials into a scrapbook, but you are what makes your travel unique. I always travel with a tiny travel printer that prints small sticky-backed photos (including selfies!) for my travel journal.

Maybe you aren’t an artist who likes to draw and paint in your art journal or a writer who loves recording long paragraphs in a travel journal- but if you still want a visually interesting record of your travels and the experiences you had, creating a mixed-media travel scrapbook is a great way to combine both long-format writing and visual reminders of your trip.

For many people, a travel scrapbook contains only photographs, but here’s a list of ideas for exciting and visually dynamic additions that you can add to your travel scrapbook style travel journal.

Ideas for Things to Add to Your Travel Scrapbook:

Pressed flowers.

When it comes to interesting elements to add to a travel scrapbook page, natural elements can be vibrant visuals. Pressed flowers, leaves, and even blades of grass can be added to a travel scrapbook with clear packing tape or carefully applied glue pen . Before adding leaves and flowers to your travel scrapbook, you’ll need to flatten or press the flower and at least partially dry them out.

Pro tip: Pressing Flowers During Travel Using Your Phone Case

Chances are, when you are on a local hike or exploring far-off wildlife and flora and fauna, you don’t have your travel scrapbook open and ready to press flowers. But you do have everything you need to press flowers in a flat, compressed space. Where? Your phone case! Phone cases are designed to fit tightly against the back of a phone and stay there without shifting.

That space between the back of your phone and a phone case is perfect for pressing small flowers and leaves. Flattened by pressure and dried by both time and the small amount of heat generated by your phone, you’ll have a perfectly preserved dried flower in no time.

You can also press flowers using your travel journal if your journal is the sort that has a hardcover and an elastic band to hold it closed. You’ll need the pressure that that band adds in order to get your flowers to dry flat. (Some very moist flowers, however, may discolor paper during the drying process.)

Feathers – found feathers can be used in the same way, although you should be aware that feathers can transport mites and avian diseases. For that reason, feathers typically cannot be taken across borders and often shouldn’t even be taken across state lines.

Picking flowers for pressing while traveling: Pay attention to signage and local rules about picking flowers. For example, it’s not only not allowed but very bad etiquette to pick flowers on a state or federally owned hiking trail. However, the same flower growing on the side of a roadway is typically fair game. Use common sense, follow local rules, and good manners when selecting where and how to pick flowers to press in your travel scrapbook.

Mini Travel Photo Stickers

One of my very favorite ways to add interest to the page of a travel journal or travel scrapbook is by using one of the easy-to-use travel printers on the market now. These tiny printers (sized about the size of the palm of your hand) are easy to pack and carry. They print small, 2” x 3” photographs with stock-and-peel backs.

If you have trouble following through with printing your travel photos following a trip, one of these travel printers might be a good choice for you. Being able to print a few photos at the end of a day as you’re relaxing in a hotel room or even a cafe is a great way to fill your travel scrapbook on the road- write in you day’s itinerary and add a few ticket stubs and your travel scrapbook will be complete by the time you catch your return flight- leaving no pressure to collate photos and manage memories after the trip.

I personally have traveled and travel scrapbooked with both the Canon IVY Bluetooth Printer  and HP’s version: Sproket Printer of these travel printers. Through traveling with both, I have noticed no major difference in use or the quality of printed photos. These travel printers make it fun and easy to add photos of you, your travel companions, and the sites you visit directly into your travel scrapbook while you are still traveling.

Cutouts From Brochures and Travel Pamphlets

As more and more travel information shifts online, brochures aren’t picked up as frequently as they once were. However, if you are a travel scrapbook creator, these little pamphlets are powerhouses for making fun and interesting pages in your travel scrapbook.

Paired with a tiny pair of scissors – you can create square, round, or custom-shaped cutouts and apply them to your travel scrapbook using a glue pen for precise glue application. You can cut out photos, text blocks, or even just individual words to create your own travel scrapbook of visiting that place. Paired with photos, other mementos, and a few of your own words in a minimal bullet journal style , it creates a cool travel journal/travel scrapbook hybrid that guarantees you’ll have a souvenir unlike anyone else’s ever visited that location.

Ticket Stubs and Passes

Ticket stubs and canceled museum or attraction passes can be a burden or a treasure depending on how you use them. How often have you traveled and found your pockets full of canceled tickets and related “trash”?

Rather than trashing these pieces of paper – or even worse, keeping them around in a disorganized heap in your luggage – place them inside of your travel scrapbook. Organizing these tickets can help you look back and remember the ways that you traveled and the places that you visited on your trip.

Ticket stubs and passes for museums, national parks, and other attractions often include information about the location as well as the trip date and time that you were there – Epherma that can help prompt fond memories as you flip back through your travel scrapbook in years to come.

With these easy ideas for creative additions to your travel scrapbook, you can create a record of your trip that is unique, exciting, and interesting to look at. A well-curated and artistically created scrapbook or journal can be a treasure. One of my favorite aspects of traveling is that it doesn't end when you come home. Scrapbooking is the perfect way to bring your travel memories to life, and an excellent way to embrace traveling from home!

I've been scrapbooking for many years now, putting together journals, diaries, binders, maps, and photo collages of my vacation memories since I was young. While I'm definitely not an artist (my drawings are absolutely terrible) , I find that scrapbooking allows me to be creative but also have a bit of fun!

I'm a firm believer that travel doesn't end when you come home. In fact, it's only the beginning. And by scrapbooking your travel memories, you can continue to bring the lessons and experiences you had in your vacations and exploring into your daily life. Scrapbooking is such a fun way to bring your travels to life, and there's no right or wrong way to do it! You are free to customize and create whatever floats your boat. I tend to go a little overboard on the stickers, myself, but to each their own.

In this post, I'm outlining five different ways you can scrapbook your travel memories, all of which are methods I use. If you're concerned that making an entire scrapbook seems a bit overwhelming, don't worry! I've listed other ideas too. You'll see real examples of scrapbook pages, materials, and tools that I use to bring my travels to life, as well as products I recommend, like acid-free tape squares (so your photos don't turn yellow over time).

How to Scrapbook Your Travel Memories

If you are planning to make one of the scrapbook ideas listed here, these are my recommendations for scrapbooking supplies, where to find them, and how much to budget.

Scrapbooking Supplies

I get most of my scrapbooking supplies at Michael's or Target , but as of late, Amazon has been helpful. In my experience, Michael's definitely has the most options for scrapbooks, paper, craft supplies, and stickers. As a teacher, I get 15% off my purchases at Michael's by showing my ID. Plus, they always have huge sales and tons of coupons, making Michael's a great place for scrapbooking supplies! Scrapbooking doesn't have to be an expensive hobby, but it can definitely become that way rather quickly. There are so many choices out there that it's easy to get carried away! If you are working on your first scrapbooking project, I recommend starting small. Only buy what you need, and then later, if you decide to make more, you can add to your supplies. Budget about $75 for your first scrapbook, which should cover the scrapbook, paper, photos, and decorative materials, such as stickers and pens.

Paper in different sizes & colors You'll want plenty of paper to create your own pages, paper to cut it out and use for photograph backgrounds, paper for written excerpts and journal entries, or even to test out certain color combinations. I recommend having 8x10 printer paper, as well as 10x10 or 12x12 scrapbook paper if you are making a large binder.

Having multiple colors and patterns give you more creative options and choices. Based on the theme of my scrapbook, I choose 75% solid colors, and then 25% with patterns. For my Ireland scrapbook, I chose the plain colors green, orange, and gold for my pages, and then added a few extra patterns with green and white stripes, shamrocks, and gold lines. Michael's has an entire aisle devoted to paper. Go crazy, my friends , but be sure to recycle what you don't use!

Markers/Special Pens/Pencils The more, the better! You'll want plenty of colors and different types. Try calligraphy pens, sharpies, markers, colored pencils, and of course, a good eraser and white-out, in case you make a mistake. I use these Faber-Castell pens and Tombow dual-brush markers on a regular basis for bullet journaling and scrapbooking, and absolutely love Prismacolor colored pencils .

Acid-Free Tape Squares Don't use regular tape for scrapbooking purposes - make sure it's acid-free to reduce brown edges and so you don't ruin your pictures. I use these acid-free tape squares that are perfect for adhering photographs to pages. They come in a dispenser that you can keep, and you only need to buy replacement squares.

Stickers (you can never have too many) Give me alllll the stickers! Even my Spanish students know about my sticker obsession - and I use any excuse to give them out! Stickers for scrapbooking are filled with possibilities, and you can easily spend your entire scrapbooking budget on them. So, stick to a few favorites - letters in a color you like, stickers that reflect where you went on vacation, or perhaps some fun flowers or outdoor items. My favorite sticker brands are Jolee's Boutique and Recollections, which you can find online from Michael's , Amazon , or Target .

Pictures For most scrapbooks, you'll want to have photographs to commemorate your travels! But before you print them out, make sure you've decided which of the following options you're going to be focusing on. At best, make sure your photos are in one place, such as Google Photos, or perhaps an SD card or album. That way, you can easily print out or upload the ones you need, and they are somewhat organized.

Five Ways to Scrapbook Your Travel Memories

Create a traditional travel scrapbook.

The first and most common way to scrapbook your travel memories is to create a proper scrapbook in binder form.

I typically use a 12x12 binder like this one with plastic page inserts where you can add pages that you design, giving you more creativity and freedom than a notebook.

The first thing to decide is organization and layout. For our honeymoon scrapbook, I chose to commemorate each destination along our 3-week road trip , rather than every individual day. You can see an example of this in the photo above for San Francisco. We spent 3 days in San Fran but I only devoted 2 pages to it, to save room for other destinations. You can choose to organize your scrapbook by day, by destination, by week, or however else you like! I refer to my travel journal to help with this part. Next, I gather the photos I want to use in the scrapbook, and print them out usually at CVS or Walmart, depending on who has the best deals at the moment. With photos in hand, I'm ready to begin!

I gather my photos, plus all any ticket stubs, paper, postcards, mementos, or other travel-related souvenirs related to the trip, and begin to organize everything into piles/pages. I'll usually do this on the floor of my living room or bedroom. Then, for each destination, I go back to my travel journal, social media posts, and personal memories to write a short "blurb" about what we did, where we went, any funny stories or travel fails, or memorable moments. I choose anywhere from 2-5 photos to include on the pages and then decide on the arrangement. Don't start taping anything down until you are positive it all fits and looks good! Lastly, I add themed stickers for decoration.

You can add as much or as little as you want to your scrapbook pages - it's completely up to you. If you'd rather not write a lot of text, no problem! Use the space for more photos. If you want to include all of your ticket stubs from the concerts you attended on your trip, add them! Have fun playing around with different arrangements, styles, and layouts. There's no right or wrong way to do it.

*Pro Tip: If you have too many pages but not enough room in the scrapbook, you can buy these extensions to give you more space, or just make a second one. I have 2 scrapbooks for my semester abroad - there were too many memories to fit into one book!

Scrapbook With A Travel Coloring Book or Another Collective Item.

After making multiple scrapbooks to commemorate our travel adventures, I was inspired to try something new when coloring books started making a comeback. To this day, I am still obsessed with Johanna Basford's gorgeous coloring books , but it was thanks to a friend I discovered the National Parks had coloring books , too!

After exploring seven National Parks on our honeymoon , I knew we were just getting started. Now, with more than 60 US National Parks to explore, I have the perfect way to honor our time in each one we visit - with a National Parks coloring book - and a corresponding stamp collector's book , too!

For each park that we visit ( As of this post, 13 total! ), I color the corresponding page with my favorite Prismacolor pencils and add it to a 3-ring binder with sheet protectors. I love this option because it requires less work, but also allows for creativity and remembering places as special as the national parks. I also collect stamps from each of the parks we visit and put into the Stamp Collector Passport Book . Is this really for children? Most likely. Do I care? Not at all.

Coloring books are an excellent option to commemorate your travel memories, especially if you want something less complex than making a scrapbook yourself.

Design a Photo Collage Travel Scrapbook.

From Shutterfly to Snapfish , even your local pharmacy or Walmart - photo books are a great way to recall your vacation memories. You have lots of design and size options and can choose a pre-existing layout, or make your own. A photo book is an excellent option for anyone who feels that making a scrapbook themselves is just too much to do - and that's totally okay!

I've been using Shutterfly since 2012, and continue to use it for photo-related gifts. Every year, I make my parents a calendar with photos from the previous year. Photo albums are always a good idea - and can make a great gift or travel memento.

Make a Bullet Journal or Update Your Existing Travel Journal.

Did you keep a travel journal on your last vacation? Use it for scrapbooking!

I bring a travel journal on all of our vacations - and even needed a second one for our 6 month trip around the world last year! Dylan attempted to keep a travel journal too - but that lasted a few days before he opted to take notes on his phone instead. For shorter trips, I bring my bullet journal - my everyday place for keeping lists, notes, thoughts, and ideas. I dedicate certain pages to writing about our travels with fun markers and pens, which can sometimes even include photos, ticket stubs, or funny quotes! If you already have an existing travel journal, go back and add to it ! You can decorate with markers and pens , add photos, ticket stubs, or anything else you want to remember. With the memories already written down, you've done most of the work! All you have to do is go in and have fun making it look as pretty or creative as you like.

Dylan and I haven't hung up any decorative items in our current apartment, but I can't wait until we have a house to hang up all of our maps!

It all started with an actual map Dylan bought in 2012. It was a map of New Hampshire and Vermont, to commemorate our new hiking adventures. We flattened out the map and attached it to a bulletin board, hanging it right in our foyer. For each hike, we placed a pushpin on the map, and watched our adventures grow.

Shortly after our honeymoon adventure , I wanted to add more maps to commemorate our travels and hikes. I bought a National Parks map with a sticker to commemorate visiting each park. Later, I also added a US State High Points map as well. Our front entryway became dedicated to a collection of our hiking adventures and travels. My best friend Kristen bought me a scratch map of the world for my birthday last year, which I can't wait to hang in our home one day soon along with the others.

Final Thoughts on Scrapbooking Your Travels

After sharing all the ways to scrapbook your travel memories, I'm ready to make another one! I hope these ideas have given you some inspiration to keep the travel spirit alive. Remember, it doesn't have to be complicated. A photo book or a map are some of the easiest ways to travel from home . To quote the movie Up, adventure is OUT THERE!

I am a little behind in scrapbooking our travels/vacations. Do you think it is better to start with the most recent and work my way back? We love visiting the National Parks and have a lot more to visit. We are 70 and 71 so we need to get busy.

But I've found it can be easier to focus on one thing at a time, and starting with the most recent trip since it's fresh in your mind, and you may also have some mementos/items handy. DIY: Travel Scrapbook

It has been around 8 years since I bought my last token snow globe souvenir. After realising my bedroom had a stark resemblance to the tv show “hoarders”, I realised my days of buying kitsch souvenirs were over and I would instead have to come up with an alternative plan to create travel memories back home. Thus, I started a travel scrapbook. But rather than buy one from the shop and fill in the blanks, I found it much more rewarding to make it from scratch, so here is a complete DIY so that you can make your own too!

DIY Travel Scrapbook // You will need:

Start with a clean desk space (don’t worry – its about to get messy)

Tools: scissors, hole puncher, glue stick, pencil, ruler, sharpie pen

A5 Blank clip folder

Clear leaflets to fill

Colourful and/or patterned paper for backgrounds

Photos (many, many photos)

Postcards from around the place

Memories (foreign coins, cinema tickets, receipts, business cards, a preserved leaf… whatever you fancy really!)

Decorations (stickers, and plenty of them!)

Step One: The Cover

Now it cannot be stressed enough how important the cover image is. This image you create should inspire you to go on new adventures (keep your scrapbook somewhere you can see it each day), as well as remind you of your fondest travel memory. For me, that was a road trip through Arizona with my boyfriend in the early days of dating each other. We were both in the USA at the same time by chance, so met up in the midst of our schedules and went on a four day road trip through the length of Arizona. The image chosen is a shot of the grand canyon, with my feet lifted into frame to remind me every day of what that moment felt like… bliss!

Be sure to pimp out your cover with loads of textures, glittery bits and pieces… whatever makes it look snazzy.

Step Two: Mix n’ Match Moments

Picking out what travel moments are going to make the cut may or may not be a difficult task, depending on how much you travel. As a travel blogger this is quite a funny task (deciding what to leave out rather than what to include), but I managed to nail it down to a handful of trips to start off with – those that were most important to me thus far in my life.

As you can see in the image above, I even included some photo booth snaps with my mum, when she came over to Europe to visit me at my apartment in Berlin. She had never been to Europe before so it was a really special trip for her, and a special trip for me to be a part of. After a few days in Berlin when ventured onwards to Stockholm, Sweden, and finally Prague, Czech Republic, before travelling by train back to Berlin. I wanted to show her a couple highlights of Europe but with so little time I was restricted to cities, so I picked Prague (an old favourite) and Stockholm (somewhere I had never been – so somewhere we could explore together).

I also chose to sporadically include some of the beautiful post cards and cards some readers have sent me over the past couple of years (if you’d like to send me one, I’d love that! Find my address here ).

I also found some cute little post it notes in the style of old mail, which I glued throughout my photos to write a quote or memory with a sharpie pen.

This whole process was really fun because it allowed me to relive so many trips I have taken over the past couple of years… it reminded me how thankful I am to be able to see the world and share it here on my blog!

Step Three: Glue it all in! 

After you’ve mapped out your pages by laying out your designs (all over your bedroom floor no doubt), then its time to get glueing!

I decided to back each page (inside a clear pocket sheet) with a colourful card of paper to give it a little more life and then glued my images and stuck my stickers on there. After all your bits and pieces are in place be sure to write a word or two to highlight how you felt in that moment!

If your A5 plastic sheets don’t have holes in them, now is the time to grab the hole punch (just be sure to measure up where you’ll punch the holes with your ruler and pencil to mark the spot.

Also remember that this is just the beginning… you can keep on filling your travel scrapbook after each and every trip with new moments you have collected on your travels!

Founded in 1703 by Peter the Great, it is home to some of the most impressive architecture and art in the whole of Russia. There’s so much to do here, it can be hard putting together your Saint Petersburg itinerary. That’s where I come in!

The city is chock full of palaces, parks, cathedrals, and theatres, and there are far too many to fit into one visit, so only my favourites have made the list of the best places to visit in St. Petersburg.

I’ve also thrown in a few off the beaten track and unusual places to make sure you get to see all the best attractions in Saint Petersburg, as well as some hidden gems that only the locals know about!

#1 – State Hermitage Museum – Possibly one of the most important places to visit in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: No St. Petersburg itinerary is complete without a visit to the State Hermitage Museum. Not only is it one of the most astounding hermitage museums in Russia, but the entire world!

I’d recommend setting aside a whole day for visiting St. Petersburg’s Hermitage Museum. Incredibly, there are over 3 million works from around the world here! If you are short of time, you can marvel at the incredible outside facade from the palace square, as the building itself is just as beautiful as the exhibits inside.

The main building is the Winter Palace, which houses Greek and Roman antiquities, centuries of European art, and the staterooms of the Russian Imperial family from the 18th and 19th centuries! The whole palace is full of russian art and historic pieces that are truly special to this museum.

If you liked the Winter Palace, Catherine Palace is another marble palace worth checking out. It’s the summer residence of the Russian tsars and is a World Heritage Site. The building itself is stunning as the stucco details are drowned in gold. The north-side carriage courtyard is particularly stunning. But, it is a bit of a distance out of the city center so if you are running low on time and can only see one, go to the State Hermitage Museum.

What to do there: If you aren’t blessed with a lot of time for the museum, take a guided tour to see the highlights. One of the most curious things you won’t want to miss is the peacock clock.

The mechanical 18th century automated clock still sings today. It’s the largest example of 18th-century robotics that has survived to the present day without any alterations!

Some housekeeping – since the museum is so big it’s a great idea to get a map which covers the 6 buildings. That way, you can choose the things you’re most interested in.

It’s absolutely impossible to see everything! Also, the museum can get very popular in summer, so consider purchasing skip the line tickets!

#2 – Mariinsky Theatre

• See a ballet performance from the “Imperial Ballet of Russia”
• A world-class concert hall
• One of the most renowned cultural attractions in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: This huge theatre is one of the most famous in the world. Built-in the 19th century, for over 150 years it has hosted some of the best actors, performers, and dancers in the world.

Although you can see operas and plays at the Mariinsky, it’s best known for ballet. In fact, this used to be known as the Imperial Ballet of Russia, so that should give you some idea of how revered it was (and still is)! Recently, the theatre has expanded.

In 2006, it added the concert hall and a second stage for opera and ballet in 2013!

What to do there: If you’re limited on a budget or time, you may not be able to extend to a show at the Mariisnky Theatre.

Although that’s a shame, it doesn’t mean you have to miss out completely. We’d definitely recommend taking a tour around the grand auditorium, one of the most beautiful and richly decorated in the world.

If your budget does cover it, don’t miss a show at this incredible place off your St. Petersburg itinerary. It’s also a great place to admire from the outside. Make sure you get pictures of the colourful buildings from Theatre Square!

#3 – Saviour on the Spilled Blood – One of the best religious places to see in St. Petersburg

• The most unique places of worship in the city
• Home to one of the world’s biggest collections of mosaics
• One of the most recognizable landmarks in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: This incredible church known as Savior on Spilled Blood, was built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was killed in an attack, which explains its macabre and graphic name of “spilled blood”.

Although St. Petersburg is filled with churches, this is arguably the most beautiful, and the reason it’s made it onto our list! The colourful church is just as bright and gaudy on the inside, where you’ll find one of the world’s biggest collection of mosaics.

Most people compare this to St Basil’s Cathedral in Russia, another of the country’s most famous landmarks!

What to do there: Any guided tour of the city will take you past the Saviour of the Spilled Blood Cathedral. Probably more than once! That’s because it’s right by the State Russian Museum, and plenty of other attractions are nearby. Also, Alexander II was a very important figure in Russian history.

If you have time, it’s definitely worth getting an hour-long audio tour of the church. It’ll tell you about the church’s history and construction.

Another religious building well worth your time when you travel to St. Petersburg is St Isaac’s Cathedral and Colonnade. It’s easily recognizable by its golden dome!

#4 – Peterhof Palace – A beautiful and scenic place to check out in St. Petersburg

• Once the main summer residence of the Russian Tsars
• Excellent location overlooking the Gulf of Finland
• Have a picnic in the Lower Park

Why it’s awesome: Since it’s located 45 minutes from the city, you’ll need to dedicate at least half a day to visiting Peterhof Palace. However, it’s well worth it!

Situated on the Gulf of Finland, this opulent palace is also known as the “Russian Versailles”. It’s not hard to see why, whether that’s down to the gilded domes, or the fountains throughout the extensive landscaped gardens.

Unbelievably, there are more than 60 fountains and 200 sculptures throughout the gardens at Peterhof. The most famous, The Grand Cascade, is one of the must-see St. Petersburg attractions!

What to do there: Don’t miss going inside the stunning Peterhof Palace. Classic staterooms, the ornate Ceremonial Staircase, and the Grand Ballroom are just some of the highlights of the interior.

Outside, there’s more to the gardens than just the incredible selection of fountains! The Lower Park has a canal that empties straight out into the Gulf of Finland and is a great spot to have a picnic.

Like many other St Petersburg attractions on this list, Peterhof gets very busy in summer. It’s definitely worth booking your ticket in advance, especially if they enable you to skip the queues!

#5 – Tsarskoye Selo and the Amber Room

• Experience the lavish wealth of the Romanov Imperial Family
• See a recreation of the Amber Room, thought to be lost in World War II
• One of the most famous attractions in St. Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: By now, you’ve probably realized that the palaces in St. Petersburg are pretty extravagant. It’s possible that the 18th century Tsarskoye Selo is the most opulent and lavish of them all, built for Empress Elizabeth by the architect responsible for the Winter Palace, Bartolomeo Rastrelli.

It’s a day trip out of the city, to the town of Pushkin, widely regarded as one of the prettiest neighbourhoods in St. Petersburg. The Amber Room is undoubtedly a highlight. Thought to be lost forever in the Second World War, the painstaking reconstruction of the room is impressive nonetheless!

What to do there: As well as visiting Tsarskoye Selo, while you’re in Pushkin there are a few other cool places to check out.

One of the top attractions in St. Petersburg is Catherine Palace, where you’ll find the Amber Room. Attached to that is also the Catherine garden, which is landscaped with a variety of English, French, and Italian techniques.

If you want to find somewhere a little quieter to escape to, check out Alexander Park. They’re a little more overgrown and spread out, but there are some interesting buildings hidden away in there!

#6 – Museum of Hygiene – Quite the quirky place to visit in St. Petersburg

• Educate yourself on the dangers of germs and disease
• See one of Pavlov’s dogs!
• One of the more unusual points of interest in Saint Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: Yes, St. Petersburg is fascinating. However, if you’re just visiting palaces and cathedrals, it’s definitely not out of the question that you’ll get palace fatigue. You can only take so much of walking around all those long hallways and being astounded by art after all!

For a perfect tonic, head to the unusual Museum of Hygiene. It was established in the early 20th century to educate the city’s locals on good health practices. It’s especially worth a visit if you want to learn about the gruesome medical practices from the turn of the last century!

What to do there: There’s plenty to see in the display cabinets here that you won’t find anywhere else in St. Petersburg! Check out both female and male models with movable internal organs, wax anatomy models, and even some displays explaining the spread of sexually transmitted diseases.

Perhaps don’t eat before you visit here! One of the coolest displays you’ll see is Pavlov’s taxidermy dog. This may not be one of the most famous places in St. Petersburg, but it’s certainly worth a visit. Especially if you’re into science!

#7 – Grand Maket Rossiya (Grand Model of Russia) – One of the more unique places to visit in St. Petersburg

• Rent binoculars to see the whole scale of this cool recreation of Russia
• The second biggest model in the world
• See all of Russia’s most important cultural and geographical attractions in just one day!

Why it’s awesome: If you don’t have time to cover all 17 million kilometres of Russia (and let’s face it, who does?), then this is your next best opportunity! The Grand Model of Russia is the second biggest model in the world after Miniatur Wunderland in Hamburg.

It’s not entirely to scale, but it does mean you can visit Moscow, the Ural Mountains, and Vladivostok all on the same day! There is 2.5km of train tracks which miniature trains run on, and over half a million LED lights, which you’re guaranteed to see as a day only lasts 15 minutes!

What to do there: Russia is so big that it may not even be possible to get around the whole model of it one day! If that’s the case, rent a pair of binoculars so you can take in the whole of this amazing model. If you do have a bit more time, fantastic.

You can have a go at controlling some parts of the model yourself! There are buttons on the side where you can control the speeds of the cars and trains in the model. Sometimes it’s just enough to watch what’s going on though.

Old women feeding their chickens, a tiny UFO, and escaping prisoners are all part of one of the most unusual attractions in St. Petersburg!

#8 – Nevsky Prospekt

• 5km street dissecting the city from east to west
• Great for shopping – high end boutiques and designer shops here
• Check out some of the best places to eat in Saint Petersburg

Why it’s awesome: One of the most bustling streets you’ll find anywhere, the central avenue Nevsky Prospekt is considered one of the greatest streets in the world.

As well as the Hermitage and the Mariinsky theatre, you’ll find some places that didn’t make our list of the best places to visit in St. Petersburg but are still worth your time!

These include Kazan Cathedral, the House of Books, and the Eliseyev Emporium. Just be careful when you’re crossing – much of the street is 4 lanes on each side!

What to do there: If you’re visiting St. Petersburg, you’re bound to end up on this thoroughfare at some point. It was originally planned as one of the roads to Moscow but is now one of the central points of restaurants for tourists!

If you want to walk the whole length of Nevsky Prospekt, you’ll need at least two hours, and possibly a little more if you’re to take in its major sights.

As well as historical and cultural sites, make sure to stop off to window shop at some of the city’s most exclusive boutiques, or sample Russian delicacies at the best places to eat in St. Petersburg.

#9 – St. Petersburg Metro – A great place to see in St. Petersburg if you love architecture

• How to see Saint Petersburg in more ways than one
• Marvel at the Grand columns of Avtovo Station
• Some of the coolest architecture in the city

Why it’s awesome: St. Petersburg’s rapid transit system is about more than just getting from A to B. The stations here are opulent and rival the palaces and cathedrals above ground for their intricate architecture.

Although walking is often the best way to see a city, don’t miss out on taking the metro – even if it’s just to be astounded by the beauty of the stations!

What to do there: Moscow’s subway was the first built in Russia and St. Petersburg’s system was designed to mimic its beautiful architecture.

All 8 lines on the first line built-in 1955 are considered places of cultural significance. Check out the grand marble and glass columns of Avtovo Station and the sport-themed Sportivnaya. Spending a day on the metro may seem boring, but not here in St. Petersburg!

#10 – Slam City – A great place to visit in St. Petersburg at night!

• A great example of alternative St. Petersburg nightlife
• See live performances from local musicians
• A club run by cassette-focused Russian record label

Why it’s awesome: Saint-Brooklynsburg is a cassette-focused Russian record label, but what on earth is that? Well, it’s responsible for one of the coolest additions to the city’s nightlife scene.

The music mixes American-style garage rock with old-school cassettes to give a very distinctive sound. The club has super cool décor, and it’s the perfect place to spend a party at night after a day visiting the museums and palaces of the city!

What to do there: Don’t miss a live performance from one of the coolest bands on the city’s music scene! The dress code is pretty extravagant, so make sure you pick out your brightest colours to fit in!

Slam City is at its most vibrant and raucous on a weekend, so go then if you can. It’s a St. Petersburg must-do if you want to experience the city’s alternative music scene!

#11 – Peter and Paul Fortress – The city’s historic citadel

• A great example of historic Russian empire defences
• A quick attraction to visit on a stop-over
• Intricate Baroque detailing throughout

Why it’s awesome: The Peter and Paul fortress is the original citadel of the city found on a small island facing the Neva River. It was built in 1703 by Peter the Great when the Russian empire was the strongest empire in Eastern Europe. For a long time, it served as a prison for political criminals, from the early 1700s until the early 1920s.

It was designed by Domenico Trezzini, Peter’s court architect and the pioneer of the Petrine Baroque style that was introduced by the Russian Empire. The complex has six bastions (each named after close associates of Peter) with intertwining stone curtain walls. The structures have been adapted and embellished over the years, and while it is beautiful, whether it was actually a good defensive structure has been up for debate.

Within the fortress is the Peter and Paul Cathedral, which was one of the first buildings to have been made. Originally it was made of wood and consecrated on 1 April 1704, but it was eventually replaced with stone a decade or so later.

What to do here: You can wander around the entirety of the Peter and Paul Fortress and visit the cathedral inside. The whole complex isn’t huge, it’s like a village inside a high wall, but it has a lot of intricate detailing that you might like to stop and marvel at.

It’s located right in the heart of the city center so it’s one of the best Saint Petersburg attractions to visit for a short stop-over. Across the river you will find the Palace Bridge, leading to Palace Square and the State Russian Museum.
