2. Mürren, Switzerland

"My wife and I hate big social events and love traveling. So rather than a normal wedding, we traveled to Switzerland and did our vows in private. This photo is from the day.

Even though people may think you're letting others down by not hosting one, very few people actually care once it's done. We held a small dinner for my wife's family after the trip." — u/[deleted]

3. Kyoto, Japan

View of To-ji Temple in the distance at the end of an alley way in Kyoto

"Wandering around Kyoto at night. This is near a very popular tourist spot, but I only saw a couple of people on my way down to the main street during this time." — u/derpyplop

5. Joshua Tree National Park, United States

"If you're on a road trip in California and it's rained, check out what the rain has done to the desert.

The desert in California looks to be colored by flowers to an unusual degree right now. If you're around in April, make sure you take detours into places like Joshua Tree, Death Valley, Anza/Borrego, Coachella Valley, and Antelope Valley. It's not going to be like this every year." — u/uspn

"I did this trek solo, I don’t know anyone who can take the time off to do anything from NY. I ride street bikes with a few local friends there, though. Anything on two wheels with a few good friends is a good time." — u/awheckyeahdude

13. The Sahara Desert, Algeria

"I spent four days camping out in the remote Algerian Sahara — just me and a local guide. I took a million photos, but this was one of my favorites. It was freezing cold at night, but free of all light pollution the sky was breathtakingly beautiful." — u/xe3to

14. Athens, Greece

18. The Serengeti, Tanzania

"The Serengeti absolutely blew my mind away. I went with Takims. I prefer to use local companies though. Honestly, it doesn't matter too much. The important thing is to stay in the right places.

I went to Ngorongoro Crater for a day and then the Serengeti for two days. I highly recommend those two. They're the best from my research, and they BLEW MY MIND and blew all my expectations." — u/mkz419

19. Romsdalen, Norway

21. Milan, Italy

22. Mauritania Railway, Mauritania

A person sitting in a train cart, on top of a pile of iron ore, in the Sahara

"I crossed the Sahara by hopping an Iron Ore train. The train was built to serve an Iron Ore mine deep in the Sahara and deliver it to a coastal port. There is no other easy route between these two points, so locals sometimes jump on the back.

The mining company turns a blind eye to it, as you can't really hurt the cargo, and it would be a nightmare to police. The train is two miles long." — u/fearlessandfar

23. Cappadocia, Turkey

Numerous hot air ballons floating above Cappadocia, Turkey

"Every day I was in Cappadocia, Turkey, I woke up at 4:30 a.m. to sip coffee and watch the sunrise. Never did disappoint.

The balloons were around $200 per trip, and I honestly enjoyed watching them so much that I figured that money will get spent elsewhere on my trip. I heard from numerous travelers they’re totally worth it, for what it’s worth." — u/iheartquesadillas

24. Kisoro District, Uganda

A view of the hills of the the Kisoro District in Uganda, with Lake Mutanda in the background

"Here is a kind reminder of how beautiful Africa is. This photo was taken in Uganda. The lake in the background is Lake Mutanda, which is near Kisoro in the southwest. Uganda is a big country. The southwest is characterized by beautiful lakes and volcanoes (at the border to Rwanda and Congo).

You can also go to one of the national parks and try to see gorillas, but that is very expensive. The kind of hiking and staying at hostels that I did was very cheap but requires some flexibility as well (if you're not staying in the resorts, the hostels/hotels are usually less luxurious). Of course, they're a great adventure, especially when you're young and flexible, it's a great opportunity." — u/laden1412

32. Yangshuo, China

34. Tokyo, Japan

"My favorite part of Tokyo was just wandering the alleys. It truly is a beautiful city, and it really is amazing how clean it is for a city with such a huge population." — u/TiredOfBeingHumble

35. San Juan, Puerto Rico

Colorful buildings on a cobbled road in San Juan

"I spent a week in Puerto Rico, and I photograph with a professional camera. Many of my photographs are taken in Old San Juan, it’s an older part of the city. Beautiful place, I definitely will return after the pandemic to experience it in full bloom." — u/P2591

36. Giza, Egypt

"A view of the Great Pyramids of Giza from the rooftop terrace of my Airbnb. I hired a guide through the host of the Airbnb, and he accompanied me to most places and was very knowledgeable of the history. He took me to some really cool spots and on a day trip to Alexandria." — u/kerryb1989

37. Grand Teton National Park, United States

"I think I got pretty lucky with this photo of Machu Picchu. The llamas roam freely around Machu Picchu! I managed to get the 15 other people trying to get pictures of it out of the shot." — u/Zombie-Feynman

44. Southwestern China

three images showing 1) people paddling on board to fish on a lake, 2) rolling hills lit by the setting sun, and 3) and old man smoking a long pipe

"It is a pretty awesome area to travel Southwestern China. My itinerary was something like Yangshuo - Guiyang - Getu Valley - Huangguoshu Falls - Kunming - Dali - Nujiang Valley - Shangri La - Lijiang - LuguHu- Yading - Litang - Danba - Chengdu.

I hiked some multi-day trips from the Nujiang Valley to Yubeng and LuguHu to Yading to avoid some long roundabout bus rides. I’m curious to see if there are actually roads there now given how much construction was going on at the time." — u/yezoob

45. Pamir Highway, Central Asia (Afghanistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, and Kyrgyzstan)

A blue SUV drives alone down the Pamir Highway, towards purple mountains

"My brother and I bought a car in Georgia and spent 100 days driving across all of Central Asia. It was the most epic trip I've ever done. Here is Caspar (our car) on the Roof of the World, aka the Pamir Highway. Georgia was probably our favorite country overall. Absolutely wonderful place.

Many of our best experiences had to do with the immense hospitality felt by locals. Our three nights spent in the Pamiri town of Bulunkul are definitely up there. Meeting a young nomadic herder in Kyrgyzstan, who then took us by horseback to a secret lake before welcoming us into his yurt is another phenomenal memory. Or getting really drunk with a high school principal in Georgia in a small town along a country road.

In terms of food, Georgia wins for sure. Adjaruli Khachapuri no doubt." — u/Pflunt

46. Petra, Jordan

Camels lay in front of the Al-Khazneh temple in Petra

"Petra is one of those places where photos really don’t do reality justice, but this was one of my best efforts from today." — u/felixjmorgan

47. Teotihuacán, Mexico

hot air ballons float above the clouds in Mexico

"I took an early morning hot air balloon ride over the pyramids of Teotihuacán, Mexico, and it was breathtaking — the view of the Pyramid of the Sun and the Pyramid of the Moon.

I did the adventure tour that came with breakfast and a walking tour of the pyramids. They pick you up at 5:30 a.m. and drop you off at the meeting point. The balloon ride itself was an hour. It was easily the most amazing scenery I’ve ever seen in my life.

We were back at the Mexico City meeting point by 2:30 p.m. If you can book just the balloon ride and get a ride straight to the pyramids after that, it would be perfect. If I were to do it over again, I would take my time on the pyramids and catch one of those buses back into Mexico City." — u/jbaerospace

48. Kedartal Lake, India

"Hiked to an altitude of 16,000 feet to Kedartal Lake, Uttarakhand, India. The states of Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, and Sikkim have some of the most breathtaking high altitude treks in the World. Also, trekking's relatively inexpensive here." — u/zuarez

49. Berlin Cathedral, Germany

51. Northern State (Meroë), Sudan

part of the Musawwarat es-Sufra temple complex in Sudan

"I enjoyed Sudan a lot. I only had a limited time there but got to see Meroe, Naqa, and Musawwarat. The guy I went with and I were pretty much alone at all three sights. (There were archeologists at Musawwarat doing excavations/restorations but no tourists. Although, we met an Aussie guy at Meroe who had pitched a tent next to the pyramids and spent the night there.)

We managed to see the pyramids both at sunset and in the morning the next day. Otherwise, Khartoum is a nice city with lots to see. I found it really pleasant to walk around it. There were super nice locals and absolutely no hassle, which is a big contrast compared to their neighbor, Egypt." — u/bringbackbigtasty

52. Varenna, Italy

colorful buildings with beautiful foliage at the base of Lake Como in Varenna

"We spent a week in the village of Varenna in Lake Como of Northern Italy, and it's probably a photocopy of heaven on Earth. Varenna is also a great home base, it was the result of our research from travel experts and testimonials from other visitors.

It’s smack dab in the mid-lake area, it’s the only one with a train station with direct access to Milan, and it’s not as crowded as the popular main town of Bellaggio. So many people say (if not everyone!) that Varenna is the most beautiful out of all the towns in Lake Como!" — u/BeardedGlass

53. Blue Mosque, Turkey

the Blue Mosque in Turkey

"Walking towards the Blue Mosque, a jewel in Istanbul's crown. I like the Blue Mosque better than the Hagia Sophia as it has the vibe of an active place of worship. Plus, it's free.

The Sultan Ahmet Camii (commonly referred to as the Blue Mosque) is one of the most stunning buildings in the world, in my opinion. I saw it during a week-long trip to the city. Completed in 1616, it's steeped in history which felt palpable when I stepped inside and looked up to the ornate ceiling. I've visited quite a few cathedrals, mosques, and temples to gawk at the architecture and found some Istanbul mosques to be some of the most moving places of worship that I've visited.

Istanbul is home to 3,000+ mosques. The city's public transport is fantastic with trams, buses, and ferries covering large portions of the central areas that tourists frequent. My top tip would be to buy individual Istanbulkart public transport passes for each member of your party on a long trip as transfer fares didn't work correctly for me when using the same card for multiple people. Also, avoid the area super close to the Blue Mosque for food. Sirkeci is a short walk away and home to at least two legendary restaurants (Kasap Osman and Sehzade Cag Kebap)." — u/ani_svnit

56. Tokyo, Japan

"In Golden Gai, Tokyo, there are thousands of bars that seat four to six people tops, mostly locals. I found one where the locals didn't mind cuddling with a stranger. It's also notable that they only served wine. It was good wine, and the owner was extremely friendly." — u/caliform

57. Québec City, Canada

58. Ain Qani, Lebanon

59. Seoul, South Korea

The Gyeongbokgung Palace in Seoul covered in snow

"I recently moved to Seoul, South Korea. I've lived in Texas my whole life and was so glad I saw the royal palace on a snow day.

My GF was coming over to teach ESL. I had never lived abroad before and always regretted not studying abroad. So I packed up my bags and left for Asia. I've been traveling around a ton, using this year as an opportunity to grow my photography business. It's been so fun so far!" — u/gdpics

60. Monschau, Germany

picturesque buildings along the edge of a river in Monschau

"My girlfriend and I finally got to visit Monschau, Germany. It's a beautiful little village just over the border with Belgium!

If you are in the area you should definitely visit for like half a day or a day. It's not a big city, and it is not just this spot that is beautiful. The entire town is very old and looks like this." — u/paincookiez

61. Mai Châu, Vietnam

"I got lost in the rice fields of Mai Chau, Vietnam. This is from my second time going. I'd spent two nights in a traditional stilt house. It was a long weekend and was so busy on Saturday, so I couldn't walk down the main road.

However, on Sunday, it was deserted and felt like real village life. My friends and I just sat among the rice paddies and watched farmers go about their days." — u/TheOneInTheHat

65. Royal Natal National Park, South Africa

the Tugela Falls in South Africa

"I just hiked to the second tallest waterfall in the world, Tugela Falls in South Africa. Tugela Falls, the second tallest waterfall in the world by total overall height, is located in Royal Natal National Park in the Drakensberg region of South Africa. The moderate 14 km (8.7 miles) hike is approximately a four-to-five hour return, and an afternoon thunderstorm is very likely. You are allowed to camp overnight anywhere in Royal Natal National Park. Sunrise views from up here (around 3,000 m or 9,800 ft) would be incredible!

The seven-kilometer hike to the top of the falls included several stops to watch intermittent clouds fill the valley below. After climbing the famous chain ladders, we were in the clouds where visibility was reduced to no more than 50 meters. As we arrived at the falls, a dozen or so other hikers had already departed in disappointment, some had lost sight of the trail, and others had missed the falls entirely due to poor visibility. When it started to rain, we took shelter in a nearby hut to weigh our options. Two more hikers arrived at the falls and quickly turned around when it began to thunder.

While waiting out the rain, we read stories etched on the walls about people who had lost their lives from falling, and others who were stuck in the hut for several days due to torrential rains. Feeling defeated, we put on our ponchos and began the two-hour and 40-minute trek back to the car park. Just shy of a kilometer into the return, we looked back to see that the cliffs had cleared enough for a possible subpar viewing of the falls.

Despite thunder booming nearby, and adding an additional hour walk in the rain for possibly nothing, we sprinted back to the falls for another look. Our gamble paid off, this time we had a mediocre view of the falls and it appeared as if we were standing on the edge of the world. Moments later, the sky cleared, and for an entire hour the Amphitheatre was our playground." — u/Thov

Top 100 Travel Photos from Around the World

Posted on 24th February 2020 1st February 2022 Author Ben Farrell

In celebration of my new book, Capture the World: The Ultimate Guide to Evocative Travel Photography & Inspired Digital Storytelling , I’ve curated my top 100 travel photos from around the world.

Nothing opens the mind like travel. New places and cultures have a transformational power that expands our consciousness, pushing us deep into a place that’s both overwhelming yet grounding. Quantum physics teaches us that what we ‘see’ as reality is anything but . Not only is our perception merely an illusion but even this, we perceive through a cluttered and bias lens of past experience , likes, dislikes, and long-held beliefs. This static and rigid schema begins in childhood and solidifies as our ego expands and we begin to subconsciously filter out what we don’t consider valuable.

The problem here is we miss so much. We stop appreciating the raw, present experiences and instead edit, rehearse and re-run life in our head . Yet, travel has the power to break down this arrogant veil and get us seeing the world anew again. It makes us present and appreciative as well as imbues an understanding that our way of living is only one among many yet, we’re all connected as humans across cultures as a giant diverse web of collective consciousness .

For me, I think it’s important to capture these moments. To freeze time and light of a moment and make it immortal. Travel photography is powerful and serves as not just a reminder of our travels and the vastness of the globe but also inspires us to wander profoundly, travel deeply and surrender wholly… to take the Road Less Travelled. I did, and that has made all the difference.

This collection spans countries, continents, and cultures. So, strap yourself in for a visual journey taking in the top photos from around the world. Don’t forget to register for a discounted copy of my upcoming travel photography book/eBook to learn how to take your own travel photography to the next level.

  • Why Trust T+L

Travel + Leisure / Brian Kopinski

Cameras let us snap scenes that inspire, places that take our breath away, and simple moments that make up the fabric of a destination through a single shot. Hefty camera bodies with giant lenses might seem like the obvious choice for top-notch photos, but for travel, they can be a bulky hindrance taking up too much packing space. Instead, consider your specific needs as a jumping off point when you're ready to shop for a new camera. Are you a hardcore adventurer? Are most of your travels long-haul trips? Are you a beginner or advanced photographer? These are all questions you should ask yourself to help narrow it down.

Whether you purchase a budget-friendly camera or something pricier, it'll be an investment — not only financially, but also in trusting your pick to properly capture once-in-a-lifetime experiences that don't come with do-overs. To help with your travel camera search, we also spoke to professional photographers Jonathan Pozniak and Viktoria North, as well as Nikon senior product manager Mark Cruz, to get some expert advice on how to choose the best camera for you.

Best Overall

Sony alpha a7cr.

It’s compact in size but a powerhorse.

There’s only one SD card slot.

A full frame mirrorless camera with incredibly high resolution, the Sony Alpha 7CR is our top pick for a travel camera. The compact size makes it very portable, and the interchangeable lenses give you a lot of versatility for shooting everything from landscape or wildlife to portraits and city scenes. As a photographer, I love the intuitive design of the Sony Alpha series cameras and this one is no exception; auto-focus tracking is impressive, in-body image stabilization does not disappoint, and the battery life has improved significantly from earlier models. Track your subject with the smart eye detection, for humans and wildlife, including a special bird option. I also appreciate how customizable the settings and buttons are, making your photography shoots more efficient. In addition to having the capability of capturing high-quality photographs in both RAW and JPG files, this camera takes video in 4K too. Built-in WiFi and bluetooth capabilities make it easy to share photos or connect to a remote as well. For a professional quality camera that won’t take up too much space or weigh you down when traveling, this is our top choice.

The Details: Full frame CMOS (35.7mm x 23.8mm) sensor | 61 megapixels | 1/8000 to 30 seconds shutter speed | 4K video | 1.1 pounds

Best Action Camera

Gopro hero12 black.

It’s waterproof and weatherproof.

It doesn’t include a GPS component.

The rough and tumble GoPro Hero12 Black has long been one of the top action cameras, with its pocket-sized and durable design. With improved image stabilization and battery life, as well as the ability to handle hotter temperatures, this newest version is no exception. With so many accessories that can be purchased separately, this camera can be equipped for any adventure, big or small, cold or hot, wet or dry. I especially love the bite mount for capturing POV, hands-free shots, with my dog. This camera is so compact and portable, it’s perfect for travel. Anything you find yourself doing, from mountain biking or skiing, to snorkeling, or taking a sunrise timelapse, will be captured so vibrantly. Customize the frame rate and settings when capturing video, with the option for 5.3K video quality. You have the option to shoot in RAW or JPEG, though you can only use the wide angle when shooting RAW. Other cool features include the ability to use voice commands to take a photo or start video, and modes like HDR, sup slow motion movie, and star trails.

The Details: Size-unspecified CMOS sensor | 27 megapixels | 1/8 to 30 seconds in photo mode, 1/480 to 1/30 seconds in video mode shutter speeds | 5.3K + 4K video | 5.4 ounces

Best Budget DSLR

Canon eos rebel t7.

It's super affordable and user-friendly.

It's best suited for entry-level photographers.

With the Canon EOS Rebel T7, you can save your dollars without skimping on image quality, and there's not much more you can ask for in the DSLR world. Although there is a newer version of this camera ( EOS Rebel T8i ), the T7 is still the most budget-friendly device with features perfect for someone ready to branch out and learn the ins and outs of DSLRs. That being said, it's more suited for a beginner photographer who wants to amp up their game past smartphone photography . It's a fantastic camera to practice manual mode and learn how to adjust ISO, aperture, and shutter speed settings. Eventually, it's likely that you'll be ready to graduate to a more complex camera — but we all have to start somewhere, right?

Canon is well known for having a straightforward, easy-to-use system, which is a huge bonus for beginners. The LCD screen is helpful for navigating the menu and setting up images, though it does lack the luxury of touchscreen capabilities. Built-in WiFi allows for quick sharing between devices, so your amazing shots can be posted to social media platforms in a jiffy.

The Details: Cropped CMOS sensor | 24 megapixels | 1/4000 to 30 seconds bulb shutter | Full HD video | 15.06 ounces (body only)

Best Budget Mirrorless

Canon eos r50.

It’s compact and lightweight, offering great value for its features.

Advanced photographers might prefer a camera with more bells and whistles.

The brand new Canon EOS R50 snags the spot for best budget mirrorless and doesn’t only promise great photo quality, but its video capabilities are fantastic as well. With 4K uncropped video and stellar subject detection and tracking at a friendly price point, this mirrorless model is a great everyday camera that’s ideal for everything from social media video captures to portrait and landscape shooting. Interchangeable lenses give you flexibility, and the compact design won’t weigh you down. Excellent auto-focus that can be tailored to detect humans, animals, and even vehicles is a major highlight, as is the 12fps (frames per second) burst mode. The touchscreen and creative assist mode make this a beginner-friendly camera as well as one that won’t break the bank.

The Details: Cropped CMOS (APS-C) sensor | 24.2 megapixels | 1/4000th sec - 30 seconds, in 1/3-step increments shutter speed | 4K video | 11.52 ounces

Best Retro Look

Fujifilm x100vi camera.

It has a timeless look with modern features.

Since it’s a limited edition model, there are only a certain number available for purchase.

We love how compact and sleek the limited edition FUJIFILM X100VI is, with the nod to nostalgia symbolized by the engraved original brand logo. This is our top pick for best retro-inspired camera, but if you can’t get your hands on one of these limited edition models, the FUJIFILM X-T5 is our next best bet. That being said, this model has fantastic low-light capabilities, in-body stabilization, 6.2K video capture, and improved in-body stabilization to minimize shaky shots. It has a tilting LCD touchscreen display, which I find makes it easier to snag those artistic selfies in the midst of epic landscapes or to get a solid group photo. The lens is a fixed 35mm lens. With the camera’s WiFi, it also uses an intuitive camera-to-cloud (c-2-c) system which automatically uploads content to the cloud-based platform. For a small camera with a "throwback" look that has amazing capabilities, this one is perfect for travelers as an everyday use tool.

The Details: APS-C X-trans CMOS 5 HR sensor | 40.2 megapixels | 1/4000 to 15 Minutes in manual mode shutter speed (mechanical), 1/180000 to 15 minutes in manual mode shutter speed (electronic) | 4K + 6K video | 1.1 pounds

Best Mirrorless for Beginners

The user-friendly design makes learning photography with this model much easier.

The flip screen tends to get in the way of a tripod attachment if you're using one.

We love how the Nikon Z50 is small enough to fit in your pocket, but don't be fooled by its size: it produces big-time quality images. "For those new to photography and video, this camera provides an exciting entry point. It's small enough to carry with you, but offers higher-quality images than your phone. This model is great to learn with as it incorporates many easy-to-use features, plus offers an automatic mode that senses different shooting scenarios and automatically adjusts the camera's settings (e.g., ISO range, exposure compensation) to deliver stunning results," Nikon's Cruz says.

The flip-down LCD screen is ideal for travel photographers and creators that want to take selfies, vlog, or include themselves for scale. The Z50 is also designed to save settings for both photo and video separately, so you don't have to worry about changing everything when you switch modes. With low-light capabilities, an easy-to-navigate menu, a sleek design, and 11 frames per second at full resolution, a beginner travel photographer will be hard pressed to find a better mirrorless camera.

The Details: Cropped APS-C CMOS sensor | 20.9 megapixels | 1/4000 to 30 seconds, bulb, time shutter | 4K video | 14 ounces

Best DSLR for Beginners

Pentax pentax kf dslr.

It produces high-quality images at a more affordable price than most competitors.

The video capabilities aren’t that impressive.

For those interested in getting their feet wet with photography, the Pentax KF DSLR Camera is our top choice for its durable, weather-resistant body, vari-angle screen, and compact size despite DSLR cameras’ reputation for being hefty in general. It offers a solid grip, and longer battery life, as most DSLR’s do. Start learning the camera in automatic and make use of the manual controls as you learn photography. The large viewfinder is fantastic, and this particular model mixes modern mirrorless technology with the classic DSLR viewfinder by offering a live view in addition to the optical viewfinder. You’ll be able to mix and match your preferred focal lengths with this model as well, since it’s equipped for interchangeable lenses. For the price point, this newbie from Pentax is a solid entry level DSLR for travel that won’t take up a ton of space in your bag.

The Details: Cropped APS-C CMOS sensor | 24.2 megapixels | 1/6000 to 30 seconds shutter in auto mode, 1/6000 to 30 seconds shutter in manual mode | 1080p HD video | 2.73 pounds

Best Mirrorless for Outdoor Photography

Om system om system mark ii.

The autofocus is fast.

The video capabilities aren’t as fast as other models.

The newest OM SYSTEM camera, the OM-1 Mark II Mirrorless model is a lightweight and compact, high-performing camera with durable construction and IP53 weatherproofing. This means it can withstand the elements when shooting landscapes or wildlife outdoors, including some rain, wind, and snowflakes. In fact, the camera is freezeproof, dust and splash-resistant, and can handle temperatures as low as 14 degrees Fahrenheit. The built-in stabilization is another key factor for outdoor and wildlife photographers, helping you to get the sharp image and assisting with longer exposures to minimize shake. The rubber control dials give you a little more grippy control when shooting, which is a nice additional feature that can go a long way. For a workhorse mirrorless travel camera that can hack it outdoors, this is a fantastic choice.

The Details: Cropped 17.4 x 13 mm (four-thirds) BSI MOS sensor | 20.4 megapixels | 1/8000 to 60 seconds shutter (mechanical), 1/32000 to 60 seconds shutter (electronic) | 4K video | 1.1 pounds

Best Splurge

Leica q3 digital camera.

It’s fast and performs well in most lighting conditions.

The front of the camera has a flat design, making it tricky to grip at times.

This pick is an upgrade to the Leica Q2 version of the company’s classic rangefinder camera, and we love how easy to use and versatile the Leica Q3 is across a wide array of shooting conditions. This fresh model allows for in-camera charging, which is a worthy upgrade from the previous one. The same full-frame capabilities are now paired with a powerhouse 60MP high-resolution sensor, hybrid AF (autofocus) system, and 8K video recording ability. The processing is speedy for both shooting stills and video, and boasts continuous shooting up to 15 frames per second. The fixed 28mm f/1.7 prime lens is impressive even in low light conditions, and a full battery charge will score you approximately 350 shots. The Leica Q3 is a great choice for intermediate to advanced photographers seeking high-end equipment for everyday purposes and professional jobs.

The Details: Full-frame BSI CMOS Sensor | 60 megapixels | 1/2000 to 1/2 second shutter speed, 1/2000 to 4 seconds in auto mode | 8K video at 30 frames per second, 4K video | 8.8 ounces

Best Underwater

Om system tough tg-7 black underwater camera.

It's tough and effective.

Divers should be aware that the waterproofing level only goes to 50 feet.

The upgraded Olympus Tough TG-7 is exactly what it claims to be: tough, rugged, and capable of taking superb underwater photos and videos. The solid handgrip does a great job giving you that extra security as you swim around and shoot the underwater world . New features added from the TG-6 include vertical video support, interval shooting, exposure smoothing, and USB-C connectivity for uploading content.

With a unique internal zoom mechanism, the 25–100-millimeter lens doesn't stick out from the camera body, keeping it watertight while you capture macro details of marine life from a safe distance. RAW shooting and 4K video make this not just any old underwater camera, but one with impressive capabilities. The super slow-motion mode is another favorite. It's rated as waterproof to 50 feet, making it the perfect companion for your snorkeling or free diving adventures . It's not just waterproof either; the shockproof design makes this camera perfect for ventures outside of the water as well. Bring it hiking, mountain biking, or just for a day at the beach without having to worry.

The camera is also easy to use, which is exactly what you want when you're shooting underwater. "I had fun with the Olympus TG-6 on assignment in Bora Bora. I'm a terrible swimmer so all I could do was click away and hope for the best. Thankfully it worked!" Jonathan Pozniak shares.

The Details: Cropped BSI CMOS sensor | 12 megapixels | 1/2000 to 1/2 second shutter, 1/2000 to 4 seconds shutter in auto mode | 4K video | 8.8 ounces

Best Phone Lens

Moment tele lens.

It gives you 2x and 4x zoom capabilities when attached to single and multi-lens smartphones.

To achieve the 6x closer shot, you’ll need the Moment Pro Camera app.

Our top pick for a stand-alone extra lens to attach to your smartphone is the Moment T-series Tele 58mm lens, which allows you to zoom up to six times closer to your subject. As a standard, it also sits twice as close to the main camera lens of your phone. This allows for sharper shots versus using the zoom on your smartphone, which diminishes the resolution. Fantastic for landscape, wildlife, and portrait photography, this lens definitely elevates your smartphone photo game by offering more flexibility without sacrificing quality. Video will also benefit thanks to a beautiful bokeh effect and an overall cinematic vibe. This lens is easy to use, as it features a straightforward mounting process and quickly twists off. This lens is compatible with most phones, but it’s wise to consult the description before purchasing.

"For most people, a smartphone is all you need, but that may vary for each trip. If I'm out hiking for the day, my iPhone 12 Pro in my pocket is all I need, and the fact that it shoots RAW and video is a huge plus." Pozniak explains.

The Details: 58 millimeter | 300 line pairs per millimeter (axis), 200 line pairs per millimeter (edge) | 39.5 millimeter lens | 2.6 ounces

Best Pocket-Sized

Ricoh ricoh street edition.

It’s very lightweight and portable.

There is no viewfinder.

We love the pocket-sized, travel-friendly Ricoh GR III Street Edition Digital camera for everyday use and portability. It’s easy to use with straightforward settings, menu, and customization. I really appreciate a camera that starts up quickly so you don’t miss the shot, and this one fits the bill. It has the capability to capture both JPEG and RAW files and you can get creative with the built-in filters like monochrome, HDR tone, and negative film. A fixed 28mm equivalent lens makes it versatile enough for portraits as well as landscape and street photography. This camera lacks a built-in flash but it does come with a hot shoe so you can attach a compatible external flash to it, if you’re taking night shots. Image stabilzation and an impressive auto-focus help produce sharper images, and a decent battery life makes it possible to explore a new city all day without having to worry that you’ll run out of juice. Bluetooth and WiFi make it easy to share photos as well.

The Details: Cropped APS-C CMOS sensor | 24.2 megapixels | 1/4000 to 30 seconds shutter, 0.17 to 20 minutes shutter in time mode | 1080p video | 9.07 ounces

Tips for Buying a Travel Camera

Understand the specs.

"When you're thinking about buying a camera, it's important to understand what features and specifications complement your shooting style as well as the content you are looking to capture, whether it be still images, video content, or both," says Nikon's Mark Cruz. These are some of the specs you should consider before making a purchase.

Sensor size: Your camera's sensor is the rectangle that reads the image from your lens and dictates how much light and detail you're able to capture. The main sensor sizes to decide upon are cropped or full-frame, with full-frame cameras having larger sensors and the ability to produce higher image quality. Cropped frame sensors will get you a tighter frame, with magnification cropping the actual lens focal length by anywhere between 1.5x and 2x. This means that a 70-millimeter lens would be magnified to a 105-millimeter focal length with a crop factor of 1.5x. Common crop sensor sizes are APS-C and micro four thirds (1.6x and 1.5x).

There are advantages to purchasing a full-frame (35 millimeter) camera, though it will come with a heftier price tag. You'll experience sharper images with more crisp details, as well as less noise. Additionally, a full-frame sensor has excellent low-light capabilities, making it the ideal aspect for astrophotography . For landscape photography, the wider field of view is a major advantage of the full-frame sensor as well. If you're interested in professional photography, selling prints, or turning your shots into custom photo gifts , the full-frame sensor will be a good fit since it produces the highest possible quality images.

Megapixels: This is a measurement of the number of pixels the camera sensor has, with "mega" meaning "millions." Usually anything over 12 megapixels will get the job done. However, if you're planning on printing large-scale versions of your images for personal or professional use, the higher the megapixel count, the better. Most cropped sensor cameras have somewhere around 20–24 megapixels while full-frame cameras tend to have between 40 and 50 megapixels.

Shutter speed: This dictates the amount of time that your camera's sensor will be exposed to the light coming in. Faster shutter speeds such as fractions of a second are usually used for quickly moving subjects in order to freeze the motion in the photograph, while slower shutter speeds are typically used to capture things like the flow of a waterfall or the stars in the night sky by having it open and exposed for a longer period of time. When buying a camera, it's a good idea to purchase one with a wider range of shutter speeds to give you the most versatility. Typically, the range is between 1/4000 to 30 seconds. "Bulb" is available on some models and offers more than 30 seconds of exposure to light, usually for photographing the night sky.

Video shooting: The highest quality video on most cameras is 4K, which will give you superb quality. However, many still have full HD video at 1080p or 720p. If video is high on your priority list, 4K is certainly the way to go.

Weight: For travel cameras, this is one of the most important factors to consider. Most travelers want a camera that is lightweight for packing purposes and easy to carry around for the day. Think about if you are willing to lug a bigger DSLR or even a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses in order to have the option for high-quality images that can be printed at a larger scale. If that's more than you need, then a compact, point-and-shoot, or your own smartphone with extra lenses might be the best fit for you.

Buy for your skill level and purpose

While browsing for a travel camera, first assessing your skill level and main purpose for shooting will help narrow down your search considerably. If you're a professional photographer doing brand work with a hotel in a far-flung destination that will be used in marketing campaigns or billboards, your purchase will most likely look a lot different than if your goal is to get images for your travel-focused Instagram page or to simply share with friends and family via digital picture frames . As a beginner, you should purchase a camera aimed at that level of photography with some room to grow, so you can learn effectively without being overwhelmed.

Choose a camera that fits your life and travel style

Do you spend a lot of time outdoors or doing water-based activities, or are you mostly interested in food photography when you travel? All of these aspects will help you determine the right fit for you. As photographer Jonathan Pozniak shares, it's also about comfort. "All cameras are good nowadays, and all have fantastic features. So here's my rule of thumb: go to a camera store, and hold each one in your hand. Listen to the sound it makes, feel what the clicking of the shutter is like," he says. "How do your fingers glide across the buttons? It should feel like an extension of your arm. Be intuitive with it!"

The art of packing a camera involves cushioning and protection against the elements (rain, dust, dirt, etc.). A backpack designed for camera use with a rain cover is always a good idea, particularly if you're someone who will be exploring the outdoors. Camera cubes are great accessories that provide an affordable way to turn a bag you already have into a camera bag.

"When I'm not bringing a lot of gear/cameras, I love the camera cubes by Mountainsmith for the airport and plane. I usually keep the cube in my room with extra lenses and if I am doing a lot of walking, just pick one lens to use for the day (usually a 50 millimeter)," says North.

"While today's mirrorless cameras are rugged, it is best to pack them in a camera bag to ensure as much safety as possible and avoid any potential damage. You should also make sure to put the body cap on the camera to protect the sensor from getting dirty, scratched, or damaged while traveling," she adds.

"Circular Polarizer and a UV filter, a comfortable strap like the Peak Design SL-BK-3 Slide , a backpack clip like Peak Design Capture Camera Clip V3 , and if you're heading somewhere with rain or snow in the forecast, Peak Design's shell ," says North.

You'll also definitely want something to backup all the incredible footage you'll be getting. "A portable hard drive for backups is essential! My heart crumbles when I hear stories of cameras and laptops getting stolen on the road. I've certainly experienced that myself. I make multiple backups each day and put each portable drive or thumb drive in a different bag just in case one gets lost or stolen," Pozniak shares.

Our experts also recommend making sure your batteries are fully charged before stepping out each day and bringing along a couple extras just in case.

Our experts had a lot to say when it came to the camera versus lens debate. "The camera and lenses are equally important, but it depends on what a person wants to capture," says Nikon senior product manager Mark Cruz. "The lens is what creates a gorgeous blurred background or lets you get close to the action from far away, but the camera provides the autofocus performance and speed to get there. The most important factor for the quality of photos is how you, as the photographer, make the most of your equipment. Combining photography knowledge with a powerful, capable camera and sharp, versatile lenses will allow you to get the best content."

Meanwhile, professional photographer Jonathan Pozniak argues that they're equally important, and emphasizes keeping your lenses clean: "Both! But what's even more important is how you use it, how it feels in your hand, and I've gotta say it, how clean your lens is!"

Fellow photographer Viktoria North was adamant that lenses are her highest priority, and she has very good reasons for putting them at the top of her must list. "With even the most basic of digital cameras now having impressive MP counts and full size sensors becoming more common, good quality glass is most important for me," she says. "This is because I can achieve a specific feel to my images dependent on the lens. For example, a fixed 50 millimeter is going to allow me to capture my urban travels as my own eyes see things. If I also go fast on it, say F1.8, that means the background is going to be nice and blurred and keep the focus on my subjects. But if I'm traveling in some beautiful vast landscapes, I'd grab a zoom lens. This will allow me to compress the different levels of the landscape and or subject and create a lot of depth. You don't always have to go with a big lens like a 70–200mm. I hike and backpack with a 24–105mm F4 most often and when it's at 105mm, I can achieve some really great compression with it."

The main difference between mirrorless and DSLR cameras is the tool or technology used to capture the image. A DSLR uses a mirror to reflect light onto the image sensor, but this makes a DSLR heavier and clunkier to carry around. They also usually only have an optical viewfinder which portrays more closely what the eye sees versus an electronic viewfinder on the screen. A mirrorless camera lets light directly hit the sensor, and typically has a live, electronic viewfinder so you can see the real time settings. Mirrorless cameras are more lightweight, therefore making them more portable and travel-friendly. They’re also quieter and faster due to the mechanism they use to capture light. DSLR cameras typically have a longer battery life and a wider array of lenses available, though with recent gains in technology for the mirrorless camera world, that’s changing.

Yes! They usually don’t have the highest megapixels and have a crop sensor, but you can still capture great photos. You may be limited to producing large scale prints, but, depending on the capabilities, you’ll be able to have prints made that are good quality in a fair amount of sizes. For online and social media, a point-and-shoot camera is perfect.

12 Epic Ways to Take Photos of Yourself When Travelling Solo!

I’ve been meaning to write this post for as long as I can remember. The number one question I get asked on my Instagram is “how do you take photos of yourself when travelling solo?”

Sorry to burst your bubble guys but I don’t have a little fairy hanging around, hire professional photographers or have an Instagram husband. Although admittedly, sometimes it would make things a hell of a lot easier.

90% of the travel photos you see of me on my blog or Instagram, are taken by me!

Since I have started to travel solo and I run a travel blog that requires epic photos (selfies just don’t cut it on the gram), I’ve been taking photos of myself on a regular basis for over two years now.

In this post, I’m going to share everything I know about self-tography with you including:

  • Different ways to get epic travel photos when by yourself
  • Tips for travelling with a tripod
  • How to set up your tripod or gear to get the photo with you in it
  • Ways to limit your camera from getting stolen
  • How to stop caring what people think (but that’s mostly down to you!)

We’re going to cover all the ways of taking photos by yourself, but how to take them too!

So, are you ready to join the ranks and become a self-tographer? Sweet! Let’s go.

1. A tripod and a timer mode

Although not the most effective option in my opinion; setting up your tripod, mounting your camera in the position you want it, and letting it run on a timer is a great option to take photos of yourself if you’re just starting out.

Most cameras will have self-timer modes and, if you’re in the market for a camera, I would check the capabilities of the timer modes on the camera first.

A big tip I have is to read your camera manual thoroughly or experiment with the timer modes available first before you set out on your travels.

You don’t want to turn up at your photo location all set to go and then struggle with setting up the timer.

The best way is to set your camera up on a continuous mode. This is where the camera will keep taking photos for you. This means you don’t have to keep running back and forth to start the timer each time.

For example, you could set up your camera to take a photo every one or two seconds. That way, you can change positions up each time without having to worry!

Another way is to buy a remote shutter that works with your camera. But, this could prove expensive.

Top tip: when choosing the right tripod, try to get one that can hold your camera in portrait mode – perfect for 8×10 editing for Instagram.

2. A tripod with a remote shutter (where you can see yourself)

The first option is a common way of getting photos but to really level up, this is what I suggest.

For me, not only do I like to set up my tripod in the position I want it, mount my camera and compose it for a beautiful photo; I like to see what I look like in the picture as well while taking it.

That way you can make sure you’re not getting half your body in it, your hair doesn’t look messy etc. (although for me it’s a given lol) and you can use see if the pose or facial expression makes it an attractive photo.

After all, there’s no point in posing for 30 minutes to find out the photos look wrong or you’re cut out of the frame! Or, you’re not happy with your pose, you’re too far away etc.

How I do this is by using a camera that has WiFi capability and using a remote shutter through a smartphone to take photos of myself.

How to set up your camera with a smartphone WiFi App

Most of the big camera companies like Olympus, Canon, Sony, Nikon, and Lumix have an app that you can download for free to connect your phone with your camera.

It’s really simple to set up. You just turn on your WiFi mode on your camera, connect your phone via an app and away you go!

Not only does having this app and the WiFi setting allow you to see yourself on the screen and press the shutter to take a photo while you’re by yourself. You can instantly download those photos to your phone to edit for Instagram or post to stories, Snapchat, Twitter etc. It’s genius!

You just have to be a little creative with where you hide your phone so it doesn’t show in the photo.

Sometimes I sit on my phone, hide it behind my body if I’m facing away, press and throw away the camera, or use it as a prop etc.

3. Burst mode option with your camera (guess what, tripod again!)

I always used to take photos of myself while travelling solo with option number two (WiFi-connected smartphone shutter) for the first year or so. But, I found that this limited my options and gave a ‘static’ photo.

I would either need to sit, turn away, or stand super still to make sure I could press the shutter. And, although there’s nothing wrong with that, I was craving something more…

Motion in my photo!

You know, that twirly dress, spinning around candidly, jumping in the air, walking in the distance motion-type pictures you see on Instagram.

So, I decided to up my game once more and started to play around a little bit on my Olympus camera features.

Well, I’m happy to say that I discovered a little breakthrough. Burst Mode!

dar seffarine best raid fes

How to take photos of yourself using your camera in Burst mode

This is similar to a timer. But, instead of taking one photo, it takes multiple photos in a really short space of time! I.e. 10 photos in 2 seconds.

What this means is that it will take multiple photos for you in one sitting so you have a better chance. For example, if you were twirling around in your dress or skirt, the burst mode would capture that better in 5 photos a second than just one photo per second.

So now, my photoshoot set up goes like this:

  • Firstly, I set up my tripod and mount my camera
  • Then, I connect my camera to my smartphone via the Olympus App
  • I will then set my camera to burst mode on the app where it will take 15 photos in 2 seconds
  • Next, I set that to repeat every 2 seconds
  • I position myself where I want to be in front of the camera by looking in my phone
  • I’ll press the button to release the shutter
  • Hide my phone somewhere (or keep it near the tripod)
  • I have fun!

This is the way I take all my photos now as it not only means I can get creative. It also means I can leave my phone by the tripod if I don’t want it to be in my photo… Winner, chicken dinner!

4. Use a smart phone with a timer mode or invest in a Bluetooth shutter for it

Although limited, most smartphones on the market have a timer mode built into the camera.

For example, an iPhone has the option of a 3 or 10-second countdown before it takes the photo. Leaving you with enough time to get in position and pose where you want!

What’s more, is you could put it on selfie mode so you can see yourself on the screen too and get yourself into position properly.

Blue Tooth Shutters for Smart Phones

Even the most basic, cheap selfie sticks have Bluetooth shutters so you can press a button on the stick and the smartphone will take a photo when pressed.

How you set this up is by connecting the blue tooth shutter to your phone, similar to a Bluetooth speaker.

Then you can connect it to your phone and press the Bluetooth shutter to take your photo without timer mode. Giving you more flexibility and not having to go back and forth to your phone! The power of modern technology aye?

5. Get crafty with propping up your camera or phone

In some instances, the use of a tripod is not allowed. For example, in most tourist sites in India, Istanbul or Egypt tripods were prohibited.

This is a nightmare for the self-tographer to be sure. But, it just means getting a little more creative with how you take your photo.

I took this by propping up the camera against a step

Some top tips I have for utilising your surroundings as a makeshift tripod or prop for your camera:

  • To gain height, use your bag/coat to rest the camera on
  • Look for stairs, surfaces, walls or even bins to prop up your phone (just make sure it doesn’t fall in/over lol)
  • Put your camera in the top pocket of your backpack to rest the camera
  • Use your drink bottle

There are so many ways to be creative and still get a good photo without a tripod and no hands to help you!

6. Get your GoPro out but make sure it has a selfie stick

A GoPro is a travel bloggers ultimate weapon. It can survive the test of time and take photos in any situation no matter how messy.

Whether scuba diving in the ocean, throwing colours for holi , mud wrestling, tubing in Laos, chucking tomatoes for La Tomatina , sandboarding, skydiving , Bungy jumping , surfing, or riding in an air balloon.

You can rest assured your camera won’t break and you can take some epic action photos in the process.

Photos of yourself when travelling solo

They’re also made for self-tography as they have a wide-angle lens. Meaning you can get more of yourself in the photo.

To avoid getting your arm getting in the way, I would invest in a GoPro stick. This means you can get more in the frame and even have the GoPro behind you to take some awesome photos.

They don’t have to be expensive either, my first was a Monopod from eBay for £1.99! Although it got rusty in the water so I wouldn’t recommend it. You can also get floatable ones here.

There are also tonnes of other accessories for the GoPro like head and chest brackets, mounts for bikes, and surfboards, you name it.

You can get really creative and it’s so lightweight, meaning it will save you from lugging around loads of heavy equipment.

It does take practice however and again, you’ll need to play around with timer functions but it’s so worth it.

7. Ask a stranger to help you out

This is not my favourite option as I like to compose photos myself (and I’m picky) but, sometimes it’s just easier to ask someone to take one for you.

Sometimes this can be great and sometimes it can be a complete fail.

It’s a gamble you take. I mean I totally get it, not everyone is travelling to get perfect photos haha!

But sometimes when a stranger takes it, the composition is all off or parts of the landmark are missing etc. it can be frustrating and there’s a limit on how much time you have.

At the end of the day, this stranger is kind enough to help you out! Let’s not take up more of their time than necessary.

The trick is learning to communicate what you want and your vision to the person you ask.

istagram spots in istanbul

Some tips for asking strangers to take your photos:

Firstly, look for someone with a DSLR, they may know more about photography

Before you hand someone your camera/phone explain what you want in the photo.

Explain what pose you’ll be pulling. If it’s meant to be a smize or you’re looking away, it could help them understand. Or else, you could be told to turn around and ‘smile’ or, they may not think you’re ready for the photo. Hey, not everyone gets the blogger life!

Alternatively, take a photo of what you want without you in it. Or show them the Pinterest pin that inspired you or the photo you’ve saved from Instagram. Then, they may understand what you’re looking for a little better.

8. Get creative with capturing your body

Of course, you don’t have to always capture all of yourself in the photo. It could be just a certain part of you.

Whether it be your hands with a nice coffee or some yummy food (the perfect excuse to buy ice cream), your feet against a pretty tiled floor, or your legs with a breathtaking view – there are countless ways to get creative photos without letting the camera go.

A big inspiration for me when I first started travel blogging was @girleatworld who takes stunning colourful captures of food she eats around the globe.

She holds it in her hand against an iconic background and it’s genius! Now she has almost 400k followers on the gram. Go follow for some inspiration, but don’t if you’re hungry ;)

9. Smile in the mirror

A common one but one that still works and can be quite effective!

Taking a picture on a reflective surface, mirror or even mirrored road signs does still make for a great photo at a different angle.

10. Buy a drone

Not a cheap option, but can bring a whole new level to your photography game!

A drone is essentially a flying camera and it allows you to take photos of yourself from heights you never thought possible.

But this doesn’t come without complications.

A drone can cost way over a thousand pounds and they are easily fickle when the weather isn’t so great. For example, if it’s windy, it could easily be blown away never to be seen again!

Also, a lot of countries (Morocco, Egypt etc.) have banned drones all together which means you may have to leave it at home or get someone to drone-sit while you travel.

Don’t even think about flying this near an airport or air travel space. Recently, Gatwick Airport in London had to delay flights due to drones flying overhead .

Which resulted in hundreds of people not being able to go home for Christmas and came with a 5 jail year sentence for the culprit.

A lot of the high-end drones will have a nifty feature warning you whether you can fly it (or won’t take off at all) so you’re all clear.

But, if you are caught flying it in an illegal zone, you could lose a ton in fines. Some countries make a lot of money this way! They’re epic, but be careful.

11. Screenshot your vlogs/videos

This may not be as good in terms of quality, but sometimes taking a screenshot of your vlogs or videos can be a great way to get still content.

For example, when I wrote about Holi in my blog post . Some, if not all of these photos were grabbed from my GoPro footage. The reason being is the colours would have destroyed my DSLR.

This is also a great way to capture movement and present a moment in time that you may have missed on your camera.

You can easily do this in iMovie or any other video editing software by using the Screengrab option.

GoPro also provides an awesome app in which you can transfer your videos/photos from your GoPro to your phone using the handy WiFi feature. From here, it easily allows you to screen grab any photo from a video.

12. Collab with other bloggers or join travel groups

Travelling solo doesn’t mean you need to be alone and if you want to be part of the travel blogging community, we’re a really nice bunch (promise)!

Many travel bloggers will love to meet up and collaborate together. Whether that be arranging a meet-up in a city or specifically meeting to shoot a location together. It can be a super fun way to meet and network with other bloggers.

Another way to do this is on press trips where all of you are sponsored to travel together with a tourism board or tour company. You can create some really awesome content of each other for your blogs or Instagram accounts.

Alternatively, travelling in a group tour to a country with companies like  Topdeck or Contiki  can open up more possibilities for photo opportunities. That and you could make travel friends for life!

Travelling with a tripod

Travelling with a tripod in your luggage or on your back while exploring a city can be tiresome.

Although my tripod weighs less than a kilo, if I carry it on one shoulder – it kills by the end of the day!

Here are some of my top tips for tripod travel:

Check the weight of a tripod before you buy it. You’d be surprised how much they can weigh, If it weighs 3 kilos, it’s going to take up a lot of luggage allowance and weigh you down.

Try and buy a tripod that folds up small or a compact tripod for travel

Invest in a proper photography backpack for your equipment and carry it on two shoulders for support.

Setting up your tripod

  • So, you’ve got your tripod, you’re all set to go, you arrive at the location and… now what?!
  • Well, there’s a couple of things that I check first before I get my tripod out to take the photos:
  • Check a composition with your phone first, no point setting it up to find out that you hate how it looks.
  • Decide what height you want your tripod. 9 times out of 10, I extend to full height but a lower angle could create a more effective composition
  • Check you can balance your tripod in the location. If it’s in sand/mud, plant the tripod deep enough so it won’t topple
  • Check your surroundings and the weather, if it’s windy it could fall over and hurt your camera! The last thing you want is for your camera to break.
  • If you’re planning to shoot a few photos while you’re here, you may want to leave the tripod set up and carry it around like that. To save you time.

A handy checklist to limit your camera from getting stolen

Another question I get asked a lot is “Don’t you worry about your camera being stolen?”

Of course, that is a worry. Especially if I’m doing a photo that requires me to be far away from my camera. Not the mention my stuff like my handbag with my phone, wallet, hotel room key, etc!

But, touch wood I have never had anything happen to my equipment while filming alone. I think people think I’m crazy and are more confused than wanting to steal my camera.

But, that doesn’t mean you can be reckless. So here’s some of my advice. These may seem obvious but it needs to be said:

  • Check your surroundings, does it look dodgy? Are there any dodgy characters eyeing up your stuff? If so, choose a new location
  • Are you in a place where it could easily be stolen? A busy street, a popular attraction etc. Maybe don’t shoot there
  • Is there any security around that would help you if someone tried to run away with it?
  • How far are you stepping away from the camera? The further away the more risk
  • Put your bags closer to you hidden from view. Not near your tripod! Don’t put all your eggs in one basket

long weekend guide istanbul

How to stop caring what people think!

At first, posing in front of a tripod is downright weird! I know, I’ve been there.

But now, my tripod is pretty much my boyfriend when I travel. My very own (rather stiff) Insta husband. He’s been with me around the world now, capturing my best moments as I go haha.

The big trick is just not to care!

Sure, you may look a little silly. Posing in front of your camera while people are looking.

But, you’re never going to see these people again after you’ve taken your photos.

So, ten minutes of awkwardness can get you a lifetime of memories. I think that’s a good trade-off.

The way I think of it is I’ll regret not getting my photo and I’m not going to have regrets while I travel because a few randoms made fun of me.

More often than not, after I’ve taken my photos, they’ll go and do the exact same! Some people will be impressed, some people will think you’re crazy, some will just not get it.

But, forget about them, rise above them and just concentrate on you and your awesome photos. You’ve got this!

If this article helped you out or if you’re an avid self-tographer, don’t forget to tag me in your photos on Instagram or contact me. I’d love to see your self-made creations.

Loved this article! I’m nowhere near this professional level of self-tography but I do sometimes feel it’s a shame there isn’t a good picture that includes me when I solo-travel. I ask people sometimes but the result is never amazing! You’ve given some great tips for me to get started, thanks!

Thank you so much Tamara for those kind words. I know how you feel, that’s why I took matters into my own hands! I’m so happy these tips could help you. Happy shooting, Sophie x

Great post! Thank you for sharing all your learned tips and tricks! I definitely need to get over my whole “people are staring” complex! Lol ✌?

Thank you so much for the feedback! Yes, it can be difficult to pose in front of a tripod lol. But, sometimes I don’t think it looks as bad as we think. Some people are impressed! Go for it girl! Thanks, Sophie x

I really need to get myself sorted with a Bluetooth shutter for my phone, and set up the WiFi on my DSLR so I can take pics using my phone etc… still getting my head round my new DSLR just being behind the camera, but on occasion used the timer to get me in the shots…would be good to see what I’m actually doing ahead of taking them, lol… Also need to invest in a new tripod as the one I have from my SLR days isn’t substantial enough to hold the weight of my DSLR properly. Anyone else with a heavy FF camera needs to be aware of this too…cheap lightweight tripods won’t do. Great post Sophie! Will see how I get on with upping my self-tography! Xx

Yes I think it definitely allows you some freedom in the way you don’t have rely on strangers anymore! I would go for a manfrotto lite and if you have a heavy camera you can get a bracket to help with the weight. Thanks so much Tilly, let me know how you get on girl :) thanks, Sophie xx

Sophie, this was excellent! I’m a novice photographer and I feel like a moron right now for not having thought of some of these great ideas. I have been taking selfies with my phone when I could have been using the App with my Canon 5D MK IV?

Hi Mychael, thank you so much! Before I learned how to take pics with my tripod I always took selfies but this way gives you so much more freedom! Please send me any self made creations :) Thanks for stopping by! Sophie x

Hi Rebecca, thanks for your kind words. I’m so happy that you liked the post and I hope it helped you :) Sophie x

A must read for solo travellers

Thanks Amit! Sophie x

LoL I also prefer asking DSLR owner to take my pics. I usually use monopod due to safety concern leaving behind my camera/smartphones at tripod for my behind pics :D Got loads of selfies during traveling. But at least it less hassle if you have tight schedule or in a rush. In some country like Japan, even monopod is forbidden in theme park and museums because it can be blocking people way. I had to smuggling it by keeping it on my hidden pocket and using it when there’s no staff around :’D But thank you for the Burst mode tips, will practice it before my next solo trips.

Hi Nana, yes it’s great to take pictures with a monopod as well. I actually use my phone more nowadays but I still use a DSLR on occasion. I’ve noticed people are getting SO strict now this tripod rules it’s annoying. Sometimes I use an octopus tripod and tie it to fences and barriers discreetly to get away with it ;) no worries. I also recommend an app called Lens Buddy that continually takes photos for you. It’s Incredible! Thanks for reading. Sophie x

This is such an excellent article and I really enjoyed reading it. And your tips are fantastic. I also enjoy travelling solo and absolutely consider the tripod to be the the ‘ultimate selfie stick’.

I do feel a little bit awkward when people are around when I’m about to take a selfie using a tripod, but it’s got to be done lol.

And your advice is about the awkwardness (and everything else) is awesome and I must try to remember that ten minutes of awkwardness for a lifetime of memories mantra.

Thank you for such a wonderful article and post.

Hi Jai, thank you for reading. Yes, I always feel you’re going to regret not getting your photos. So, who cares if someone judges you for ten minutes haha :) Good luck with your self-portraits! Sophie x

Great tips! Where is your backpack from? Love that is doesn’t look like a typical camera bag.

Hi Jodi, thank you :) It’s from Gaston Luga! But, I would say if you want to keep camera and lenses in a bag I would look for one with padding as that one was quite thin :) Sophie x

A Look at My 20 Top Travel Photos of 2021

The clock is beginning to run out on the year 2021 and that means it is about time for my annual post on my Top Travel Photos of the year. To be completely honest, when the year started, my hope was that this post would be filled with wonderful pictures from my autumn trip to Egypt, Jordan, and Israel. However, the COVID-19 curse put a dent in my travel plans once again and left me scrambling to change my travel plans this autumn. As frustrating as it was to have to push back my trip, I was extremely blessed to be able to go on several incredible adventures this past year. From those adventures, I was able to capture several great photographs that I am very happy with. The purpose of this annual post is to share these photographs with you in the hopes that it inspires you to plan your next big adventure.

However, before I introduce you to my favorite pictures from my travel adventures this year, let me remind you that you can still go back and review my favorite photographs from previous years in case you missed them. This is a yearly exercise that I have been doing for several years and I have linked to the previous editions of my yearly Top Travel Photos showcase for you to review below.

Elephant Seal Vista in California

Top Travel Photos

The travel year began for me with a trip to Southern California to visit my brother and his family. I love getting to see them, but I also love my visits because there are so many incredible things to see and do in Southern California. One of my favorite stops, when I am down there, is the Elephant Seal vista North of Santa Barbara. Seeing these huge and incredible creatures up close is remarkable.

Bull Elephant Seal

Top Travel Photos

This year when I visited, I was lucky enough to visit around mating season, so there were a lot of huge bull elephant seals on the beach. You really have no idea just how massive these seals are until you see them in person. This guy was doing his best to protect a prime piece of beach that he had staked his claim to.

Pinnacles National Park

Top Travel Photos

One of my favorite stops on my California trip this year was to a national park that I have been trying to find time to visit for years. Pinnacles National Park is one of the newer parks in the United States, and it is also one of the smallest. However, what it lacks in size it certainly makes up for in beauty. I think this shot of the jagged rock formations in the high hills of the park perfectly showcases the beauty of this incredible park. If you would like to learn more about the park, I have linked to a visitor guide I created for you to review below.

Condor Landing at Pinnacles National Park

Top Travel Photos

Without a doubt, some of the top travel photos that I took this past year were of the incredible California Condors at Pinnacles National Park. If you haven’t had an opportunity to see these incredible birds in person, you are really missing out. If you think the size and beauty of bald eagles are impressive, wait until you see these kings of the sky.

Condor in Flight at Pinnacles National Park

Top Travel Photos

If I had to narrow down the favorite of my top travel photos from this year, it would be very difficult to not choose this shot of a California Condor in mid-flight at Pinnacles National Park. Seeing this picture brings back such fond memories of seeing these amazing birds in person and just sitting mesmerized as I watched them soar above the park.

Beautiful Santa Barbara, California

Top Travel Photos

Ever since I first visited my brother and his family in Santa Barbara, California, I have been in love with the city. If you love outdoor adventure, the city of Santa Barbara couldn’t be a more perfect destination for you. With close proximity to some incredible surfing spots and the Sierra Nevada range only a short way away, there is always something to do outside. Not to mention, it is the gateway to the Channel Islands, which is one of the most incredible and underrated national parks in the United States. There is some of the best whale watching in the world off of the islands. I took the picture below from high up on the bluffs behind Santa Barbara. In the distance, you can actually see the Channel Islands off the coast. So beautiful!

Beautiful Sunset in Ventura, California

One thing that you can always count on when visiting California is experiencing some of the most vibrant and brilliant sunsets imaginable. This was certainly the case when we visited Ventura, California. The sunset off the beach was so incredible that I was able to capture a number of amazing photographs. This sunset photo is definitely one of my top travel photos of this past year. You can see the surfers trying to get in as many waves as they can before the sun sets behind the horizon.

California Sunset Dreaming

Top Travel Photos

This is another photograph that I took of the same sunset that I am equally as proud of. You can see the young family at the bottom of the screen out on the beach enjoying the incredible view. If I had the time, I would try and spend every evening chasing sunsets as it often produces some of the top travel photos and most memorable shots. If you would like to learn how to predict when there will be an amazing sunrise or sunset to photograph, I have included a guide that you can review below.

Exploring the Porcupine Mountains

Top Travel Photos

As the calendar year turned to Summer in the Midwest United States, it was time for me to head to the Great Lakes to embark on what has become a yearly tradition for me. Each summer, I try and seek out some of the best kayaking destinations to explore. This year, one of the destinations that I chose to explore was the beautiful Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. These rolling hills (I wouldn’t actually call them mountains) are absolutely beautiful and have some really fantastic hiking trails for visitors to explore. I love this shot that I was able to get that shows the mountains with Lake Superior in the distance.

Beautiful Bond Falls in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Top Travel Photos

One of the best parts about the Porcupine Mountains in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan is all of the incredible waterfalls in the area. One of my favorites to visit when I am in the area is the beautiful Bond Falls, which is located just outside of the park. I was able to capture this beautiful photograph of the falls with the reflection in the water on my visit this past summer. Such a beautiful place.

Breathtaking Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore

Top Travel Photos

Without a doubt, the hallmark of my summer kayaking trip was a visit to the infamous Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. If you love to kayak, then Pictured Rocks is an absolute must-visit destination. It is home to some of the best big freshwater kayaking in North America. It is also where I took some of my top travel photos of the year. The huge rock cliffs that highlight this spectacular coastline are amazing to explore from the water. You can also hike along the top of the cliffs to get a bird’s eye view of this dramatic coastline. I absolutely love this shot that I got when I hiked the Mosquito Beach and Chapel Beach loop this summer.

Kayaking Fun at Pictured National Lakeshore

Top Travel Photos

While there might be some wonderful hiking trails at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, the claim to fame for this coastline is the spectacular giant coastal cliffs. One of the most popular ways to see and experience these cliffs is to get out on the water in a kayak and explore the coastline. That is exactly what I did this summer, and the experience is one that I will not soon forget. This photograph of our group kayaking thru the large archway on the coastline is one of my top travel photos of the year for sure. For more information on how to visit Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and get out on the water and kayak this amazing coastline, please see my Definitive Pictured Rocks Travel Guide linked below.

Pictured Rocks Kayaking Adventure

Top Travel Photos

While the kayaking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore was cool enough, having the opportunity to do so around sunset just added to this magical experience. As I have mentioned many times on my blog, photographing around sunset or early morning around sunrise are my favorite times of day to take pictures. This shot that I got on the back end of my Pictured Rocks Kayaking adventure is one of my favorites because the soft light of the evening gives the picture a warm glow. What an amazing moment to capture!

Exploring Leprechaun Canyon

Top Travel Photos

My last big trip of the year was to Southern Utah and without a doubt, this trip ended up delivering some of my top travel photos of the year. Southern Utah is such a magical place, which is why I keep getting drawn back there to explore and photograph. On this trip, I was determined to discover some of the lesser-known spots in Southern Utah and explore them so that I could share them with you. One of these places was the beautiful Leprechaun Canyon Slot. I have explored several breathtaking slot canyons in my travel adventures, and Leprechaun Canyon ranks right up there with some of the most beautiful. However, the best part about Leprechaun Canyon is that it is not nearly as busy or crowded as some of the other slot canyons in Southern Utah. As you can see in this photograph of me, we have the canyon all to ourselves.

Exploring the Amazing Goblin Valley State Park

Top Travel Photos

While Southern Utah’s five national parks may get most of the attention, the area is also home to some truly spectacular state parks for visitors to enjoy as well. Without a doubt, one of the most incredible state parks to visit in Southern Utah is the beautiful Goblin Valley State Park. Much like the nearby Bryce Canyon National Park, the Goblin Valley State Park is known for its incredible canyons filled with amazing rock formations. I love this photograph that I took in Goblin Valley because it showcases both the area’s vastness and beauty.

The Beauty of Goblin Valley State Park

Top Travel Photos

Like most places in Southern Utah, the beauty of Goblin Valley State Park is only enhanced as the sun starts to set. I absolutely love the glow in this photograph that I took of the breathtaking rock formations in the valley that make Goblin Valley State Park such a treasured destination. It almost feels like you are walking on the planet Mars when the sun starts to set and the red rock formations in the valley start to glow with the setting sun. It’s a stunning time to see the park!

A Monument Valley Sunset at Forrest Gump Point

Top Travel Photos

Not only is this photograph of Monument Valley one of my top travel photos of 2021, but it is also one of my favorite photographs that I have ever taken in Southern Utah. If this landscape looks familiar, it is probably because it has been showcased in a large number of movies throughout the years. Most famously, this exact spot was showcased in the 1990’s classic “Forrest Gump”, starring Tom Hanks. If you don’t recall the scene, this is where Forrest Gump abruptly stops his cross-country run and decides to go home. It is a beautiful viewpoint of a breathtaking landscape. I love the glowing sunset sky in this shot I was able to capture at Forrest Gump Point this past autumn.

The Beautiful Alstrom Point in Glen Canyon

Top Travel Photos

This photograph that I took of the incredible Alstrom Point in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Southern Utah could have made my list of the top travel photos of 2021 for me simply because it is a destination that I have tried to reach at least a handful of times in the past and failed. I simply never had enough time and the correct vehicle to reach this viewpoint before. This past autumn I was bound and determined to get there, so I set aside a large portion of an afternoon and made sure I had a high clearance 4×4 vehicle with me. Needless to say, getting there still wasn’t easy and involved white knuckle driving on an unimproved road at night, but I was able to finally capture some long-desired photographs of Alstrom Point like this beauty here.

Posing for a Picture at Alstrom Point

Top Travel Photos

This sunset photograph that I was able to take of myself at the incredible Alstrom Point in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is one of my favorite self-portraits of all time. I am absolutely obsessed with the breathtaking viewpoints in Southern Utah and Alstrom Point is one of the most beautiful and difficult to reach. The fact I was able to make it there this year and get this photograph makes me so very happy!

An Amazing Sunrise at Reflection Canyon

Top Travel Photos

For years, the favorite photograph that I have ever taken was one that I took early on in my adventure travels of the incredible Morraine Lake near Banff National Park in Alberta, Canada. While I still absolutely cherish that photograph, I may have a new all-time favorite picture. Never before in my adventure travels have I had to work so hard to get a photograph. To get this beautiful sunrise shot of Reflection Canyon in the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area in Southern Utah I had to drive 2.5-hours a mere 50-miles down an unimproved road, hike roughly 18-miles on an unmarked trail thru slot canyons and deep washes, and camp out overnight in 28-degree Fahrenheit temperatures to be ready to capture this photograph. After seeing how it turned out, it was so worth it!

10 Do's and Don’ts of Instagramming While Traveling

Kara Cutruzzula

Are you a vacation sinner?

No, I'm not talking about engaging in a travel fling (although feel free to share your stories in the comments), but rather unintentionally enraging your Facebook friends and Instagram followers with an endless parade of vacation photos.

If you Google "travel vacation photos," suggested searches include "travel bragging on Facebook" "annoying vacation photos" and the slightly more optimistic "best way to share vacation photos." So yes, this seems to be a problem. Don't worry, I'm not going to tell you to power down your phone and embrace the present in all its glory — documenting trips is half the fun of travel. However, there are some do's and don'ts to consider if you'd like to keep your friendships alive.

Do: Provide Eye-Opening Value

Did you score that villa suite by carefully plotting and allotting your points? Did a stranger tell you a fun fact about your destination? Did you find the best sushi in all of Tokyo? Tell everyone! Giving context to your photos provides depth about where you are — and even how you got there. Any travel tips or insightful info you can share will be welcomed by people who planning trips of their own.

Don't: Be Generic and Boring

Yes, beaches are relaxing. And yes, Italy has delicious pasta. But what else can you tell us? Instead of reaching for stereotypes and cliches, be specific in your descriptions and images. What are your own keen-eyed observations that make that particular beach or plate of spaghetti bolognese so special? If you can't think of anything to add, perhaps rethink whether someone else will find value in the post.

Do: Communicate You're Actually Having a Good Time

Delayed flight? Lost luggage ? You're physically lost? It's hard to slap on a smiley emoji during every moment of travel, as things can so often go wrong, but it's a little difficult for friends to feel sorry for your one tiny glitch during a two-week travel odyssey. So please try not to whine too much.

Don't: Be a Braggart

A little bit of bragging is fine, of course, because it's difficult to avoid the fact that you're off in a beautiful country and your friends are toiling away in their cubicles. But a bit of self-deprecation or gratitude can go a long way, so have a sense of humor when things go wrong or when you're thrilled you just checked in to The Greatest Hotel in the World. There's a big difference between a caption that says "Lucky me," and one that says "I'm so lucky and grateful to be here in Bora Bora <or wherever>."

Do: Respond to Commenters

Snap a nice shot and chances are people will start commenting or asking questions: Where are you? How long will you be there? I know the best resto you should try! Trips can be busy affairs, but it looks a little obnoxious if you can't take two minutes to respond to anyone. If you have enough time to post four more photos of your sea urchin appetizer, you have time to engage, even if it's to say "thanks for the tip!" Plus, your friends and followers will continue to care about the rest of your adventure if you take their advice and engage them in your narrative.

Don't: Spam Like a Bot

If you've got a post-happy trigger thumb, think twice about what you're pushing out into the world—and how often. If you're at a 12-course dinner , maybe don't post a dozen pics? How many photos you post is up to your discretion, but a good rule to follow is high-quality over high quantity. We probably don't need to see your coffee at breakfast, your lunch buffet, that post-lunch nap, post-massage glow, every dinner morsel and bubble bath time. Leave a little something up to the imagination. Less is more.

Do: Show Your Personality

Everyone loves a gorgeous cityscape (if only because it reminds us how small and insignificant we truly are, #existentialtraveler), but there are ways to make a traditional image a tiny bit un traditional. Try a clever caption or weird emojis; or, if you're posting on Instagram Stories, give us a little voiceover. People follow you for a reason. Even if you're not a selfie-taker, you can still show off your personality through what you're seeing.

Don't: Ruin Your Trip for the 'Gram

Signs you're sabotaging your vacation for the sake of likes:

You're running around looking for Wi-Fi because it's been 30 minutes since your last post.

You're gauging the success of your vacation based on how much digital engagement you're receiving.

You're ignoring your larger surroundings to look for the perfect graffiti wall or artful doorway in which to pose.

Bottom line: Make the trip come first and the photos come last.

Do: Tell a Story

Novel have arcs. Films have beginnings, middles and ends. Songs have choruses and bridges. They all have closure. (Well, hopefully they do.) Your trip can tell a similar story. Think about how you can bring your followers on a journey with your posts, whether that's navigating the airport, or hunting down the best croissants in Paris . If you want to post one-off images or videos, that's cool, but what's happening in them?

Don't: Overstay Your Welcome

Reminiscing with a #tbt post is fun (especially if it's 20 degrees and you can't stop dreaming of Tulum), but vacation photos have an expiration date. To most people, continuing to post snaps days and weeks after your trip is done is overkill. When you're home, you're home — and besides, you can take that time to start planning your next getaway.

7 Amazing Small Town California Weekend Trips To Take In The Fall

7 reasons you should rethink carrying bear spray on your next hike, why visit the "boulder of oregon".

There are some people who travel like pros and have so much wisdom to share. While the rest of us struggle with packing too much (it just seems so important to have several outfit changes a day), these people know how to bring light carry-ons, pack the right snacks, and make any trip feel like a breeze.

Thanks to Reddit, we have access to tons of tips about how to make traveling as convenient, easy, and stress-free as possible. Here are the best travel hacks we should know about, according to people on Reddit.

Ask For An Earlier Flight And You'll Get Perks

For a lot of people, flying is a huge stressor and it feels like it's best to just grin and bear it (or download some good music or podcasts to distract yourself the whole time). Other people enjoy finding flight deals and figuring out how to get the most out of their travel time.

This travel hack comes straight from  Reddit  and it's really smart: talk to someone who works for the airline at the gate and ask if you can be on an earlier flight. They'll have a waiting list for people who are interested in doing this. This person wrote, "The upside to taking a bump is tremendous; there are typically financial incentives and sometimes upgrades on your next flight. If you have to stay an extra night in your location the airline will put you up in a hotel."  They also shared that they've been bumped to an earlier flight that was a direct one, so they didn't have to deal with a layover. Someone responded to this Reddit post and said they once got bumped into business class and even got a voucher for a free round-trip flight.

This sounds awesome because you can save time and get home earlier or start your trip earlier than you thought that you would. And since not everyone knows that you can do this, you'll probably be successful. (And then you'll be the one in your friend group with the clever travel hacks.)

Buy Plane Tickets To Europe Or Outside The U.S. For Thanksgiving

When we think about the craziest, busiest times to be at an airport, we typically think about two major holidays: Thanksgiving and Christmas. These are the times when people want to be with their families and people definitely want to fly home.

This travel hack from Reddit is also great: someone shared that they find super cheap plane tickets when they book them for Thanksgiving Day. They said that this works if you're in the U.S. and want to somewhere else. They wrote, "Ticket prices go WAY down if you are leaving the country. Few years ago I wanted to go to Ireland and booked my tickets 2 months in advance. Tickets were around 1,200 dollars every day except thanksgiving which dropped to 550. Have done this every thanksgiving since."

This is a really smart idea since chances are, you've already got some time off work booked if it's Thanksgiving or even Christmas. It would be a good time to go on an epic vacation (if your family doesn't mind you missing Thanksgiving one year, of course).

These Hacks Help Make Your Hotel Feel More Like Home

Then there are the travel hacks that help make you feel like you're at home when you're staying in a hotel for the weekend or the week. Whatever you can do to feel more comfortable will help a lot. According to this post on Reddit, there's a way to make sure that you can sleep in a dark hotel room: "keep a couple of clip devices (binder clips, chip clips, clothespins, etc) in your cosmetic case or Dopp kit. Quite often hotel curtains don't close completely and you can secure them with the clips."

This hack involves the Continental breakfast that is often available at hotels: take the ingredients and enjoy a lovely sandwich. Someone wrote, "If they have bagels or English muffins, you can make breakfast sandwiches. I don't know why this doesn't occur to people in hotels, but nobody ever makes them. But one day I saw my coworker make one and it just seemed too obvious."

The final thing that you can do in a hotel: if you're given the choice to stay in an upgraded room but would have to pay for it, you can say no. This way, you might be granted this upgrade anyway and it won't cost you anything extra at all. Hotels can book too many people in rooms just like airlines can oversell seats.

If you're curious about some useful travel hacks, these ones from Reddit are really helpful. From how to sleep better in a dark hotel room to getting on an earlier flight, these hacks should make your next trip much smoother.

Laura Loomer, a Social-Media Instigator, Is Back at Trump’s Side

The former president’s decision to elevate Laura Loomer, a far-right activist known for racist and homophobic posts online, has stunned even some Trump allies.

Laura Loomer, carrying luggage and holding a smartphone in one hand, exits an airplane onto a set of stairs.

Follow along with live updates on the Trump and Harris campaigns .

Before Donald J. Trump traveled to Philadelphia for this week’s debate, he invited one of the internet’s most polarizing figures along for the ride.

Laura Loomer was backstage with the Trump entourage while Mr. Trump squared off against Vice President Kamala Harris. She was in the spin room with the former president immediately afterward. And the next day, she flew with him to New York City and Shanksville, Pa., to commemorate the anniversary of Sept. 11.

A far-right activist known for her endless stream of sexist, homophobic, transphobic, anti-Muslim and occasionally antisemitic social media posts and public stunts, Ms. Loomer has made a name for herself over the past decade by unabashedly claiming 9/11 was “an inside job,” calling Islam “a cancer,” accusing Ron DeSantis’s wife of exaggerating breast cancer and claiming that President Biden was behind the attempt to assassinate Mr. Trump in July.

Just two days before the debate, Ms. Loomer, 31, posted a racist joke about the vice president, whose mother was Indian American. Ms. Loomer wrote on X that if Ms. Harris won the election, the White House would “smell like curry.”

For many observers, including some of Mr. Trump’s most important allies, the Republican presidential nominee’s choice at a critical moment of the campaign to platform a social-media instigator, albeit one with nearly 1.3 million followers on X, was stunning.

“The history of this person is just really toxic,” Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina, a Trump ally, told a reporter for HuffPost on Thursday . “I don’t think it’s helpful at all.”

His comments were echoed by Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Republican from Georgia and a devoted supporter of Mr. Trump. “I don’t think that she has the experience or the right mentality to advise a very important presidential election,” Ms. Greene told reporters Thursday morning.

Ms. Loomer declined to comment, saying in a text message that she was “not interested in speaking to the media so they can further their conspiracies about me.” But she took to X, her favorite medium, to attack both Ms. Greene and Mr. Graham, calling them disloyal to Mr. Trump while making a string of accusations about their personal lives.

The critiques have not diminished the candidate’s enthusiasm for her. On Thursday afternoon, Mr. Trump shared on Truth Social a post of hers attempting to debunk a story by Axios that said Ms. Harris was outperforming Mr. Trump on social media.

Asked to comment about her association with the former president, the Trump campaign responded with a statement it had released on Wednesday about the Sept. 11 terror attacks that did not address questions about her ties to Mr. Trump. “The day wasn’t about anyone other than the souls who are no longer with us, their families, and the heroes who courageously stepped up to save their fellow Americans on that fateful day,” the campaign statement read.

This was far from Mr. Trump’s first association with her.

Ms. Loomer lives in Florida and frequently attends events at Mar-a-Lago, and the former president has amplified many of her social media posts on his own accounts. In January, she flew with him to Iowa during the buildup to the state’s caucuses. In April, The New York Times reported that Mr. Trump was considering hiring her for his campaign — a plan he abandoned only after some of his supporters pushed back on the idea.

But with seven weeks left in the presidential race, a time when conventional wisdom dictates that candidates broaden their message to appeal to moderate undecided voters, Mr. Trump’s embrace of Ms. Loomer is a clear signal that he is instead doubling down on propping up some of the most caustic elements of the far right.

Another signal came on Tuesday, when the Trump campaign assembled a “social media war room” in Philadelphia to respond in real time to the debate. Roughly 18 conservative influencers gathered in a conference room in the Warwick Rittenhouse Square — the same hotel where Ms. Harris was staying — and pounded out ripostes to Ms. Harris’s every utterance during the debate while vigorously defending Mr. Trump.

The group included Chaya Raichik, who is behind the conservative social-media account known as Libs of TikTok and who is known for her transphobic content and smear campaigns against schools, hospitals and libraries. It also included Jack Posobiec, a right-wing podcaster who helped spread the Pizzagate conspiracy theory that Democratic politicians secretly ran a child sex-trafficking ring out of a Washington pizzeria. Also there was Rogan O’Handley, who is best known as DC Draino, an election denialist and vaccine skeptic.

In advance of the event, Mr. Trump sent each person a signed letter thanking him or her “for being a social media warrior in the fight to save our country,” adding that he looked “forward to making viral content with you at the White House in just a few short months.”

The group, according to Alex Bruesewitz, a political consultant who was hired by the campaign last month , collectively had about 50 million social media followers. Several of them, including Mr. Posobiec and Mr. O’Handley, have also been deployed by the Republican National Committee to help host election integrity webinars in recent weeks.

Shortly before the debate began, Mr. Bruesewitz fielded a video call from Mr. Trump, who delivered a pep talk.

“You guys are more important than I am, actually, because you’ll get the word out, the way you want to get it out,” Mr. Trump was recorded saying in a video of the call later posted to social media.

It’s hard to measure the impact such voices might have on Mr. Trump, and little if anything is known about what conversations he has had about his campaign with Ms. Loomer or other influencers. But few, if any, candidates have had a closer relationship with their online base of support, one that doesn’t always focus on the same issues as the broader electorate.

In the days leading up to the debate, Ms. Loomer and most of the people making up Mr. Trump’s social media war room were posting allegations that Haitian migrants had been killing and eating pets in Springfield, Ohio.

Most shared images, generated with A.I., of dogs, cats and ducks being protected by Mr. Trump, along with other content underscoring the unfounded claim that the pets were being eaten. On Monday, for example, Mr. O’Handley uploaded an image of Mr. Trump astride a giant cat as he held an AR-15-style rifle.

Ms. Loomer, for her part, posted advertisements for dog collars inscribed with the phrase “not your lunch #MAGA” on them that were available for $23.28 plus shipping. Another version bore the phrase “don’t eat me” in Haitian Creole.

The last two posts by Mr. Trump on Truth Social before the debate were A.I. images of cats and ducks; one depicted cats in military fatigues carrying assault rifles and wearing MAGA hats; the other showed the candidate himself sitting on a plane amid a crowd of ducks and cats.

Then, roughly 26 minutes into the debate, Mr. Trump responded to a question about immigration by claiming that migrants were “eating the pets of the people that live” in Springfield.

For many of the 67 million people watching the debate, who aren’t as terminally online as the former president or his social media supporters, the comment may have been confusing. But for some who hope to see him defeated at the polls in November, the entire episode provoked a measure of glee.

On Thursday, Claire McCaskill, the former Democratic senator from Missouri, took to social media to sarcastically encourage Mr. Trump to spend more time with Ms. Loomer, calling her a “perfect adviser.”

“I hope he keeps her very close to him between now and the election,” she wrote. “They belong together.”
